"There are just a few houses that have a private bath complex, so it was something really for the wealthiest of the wealthy," Zuchtriegel added.

The archaeologists analysed two skeletons discovered in the house and revealed the trauma that the residents of the city must have faced when the volcanic lava flooded their homes.
The bodies belonged to a woman aged between 35 and 50, and a boy in his teens.
"The woman was still alive while he was dying - imagine the trauma - and then this room filled with the rest of the pyroclastic flow, and that's how she died," Dr Sophie Hay, an archaeologist at Pompeii, told BBC.

Even though the true nature of their relationship is unclear, as per experts they can be gay lovers.

Superintendent of the Pompeii archaeological site Massimo Osanna said, "The fact that they were lovers is a hypothesis that cannot be dismissed."

"When this discovery was made, that they were not two young girls, some scholars suggested there could have been an emotional connection between the pair," said Professor Stefano Vanacore, who headed a research team which examined the pair back in 2017.&nbsp;

"But we are talking about hypotheses that can never be verified. What is certain is that the two parties were not relatives, neither brothers nor a father and son," he added.

The woman was estimated to have been between 35 and 45 years of age and was discovered lying in the fetal position on a bed while the young man, who was likely to be no older than 20, died after crumbling beneath a wall which collapsed.&nbsp;

The woman's skeleton was discovered clutching a small cache of gold, silver and bronze coins, along with gold and pearl earrings.&nbsp;

“The room was chosen as a refuge by the two people, while waiting for the end of the fall of pumice that had been gradually filling the open spaces for hours in the rest of the house,” said the archaeologists, in a statement.

Since the door of the room was closed, the room was free of pumice, however, the couple remained trapped.&nbsp;

"We proved that seismicity during the eruption played a significant role in the destruction of Pompeii and, possibly, influenced the choices of the Pompeiians who faced an inevitable death," he said. There had to be a different explanation," co-author Dr. Mauro Di Vito, who is a volcanologist and director of INGV-Osservatorio Vesuviano said. Small rock and ash particles had rained on the city for 18 hours and when the eruption started, the inhabitants who had survived were likely to have believed that they were safe in their shelter till strong earthquakes started. The charcoal frescoes were discovered during excavations at I’Insula dei Casti Amanti, which is a group of homes located in Pompeii’s archaeological park which was opened for the public for the first time on Tuesday (May 28).

Meanwhile, other frescoes made on a long wall included the outline of three small hands, a hunting scene of an animal which looked like a boar, two people playing with a ball and two boxers lying on the ground.

Director of Pompeii’s archaeological park Gabriel Zuchtriegel said the sketches were probably made by one or more children who played in a courtyard before the destruction happened after the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in AD79.

“Together with psychologists from the Federico II [university of Naples], we have come to the conclusion that the drawings of gladiators and hunters were made based on a direct vision, and not of pictorial models. They had probably witnessed battles in the amphitheatre, thus coming into contact with an extreme form of spectacularised violence," he said.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, Italian Culture Minister Gennaro Sangiuliano said: “More and more, Pompeii is revealing wonderful new discoveries that confirm [the site] as an extraordinary treasure chest.”

The first excavations in Pompeii ruins started in 1748 and it is the world's second most visited archaeological site.

The small room found at the Civita Giuliana villa some 600 metres north of the walls of Pompeii&nbsp;contained two beds, only one of which had a mattress, two small cabinets and a series of urns and ceramic containers. According to the Italian culture ministry, the remains of two mice and a rat were found in the containers.&nbsp;

“These details once again underline the conditions of precarity and poor hygiene in which the lower echelons of society lived during that time,” said the ministry&nbsp;in a statement.&nbsp;

The archaeologists also discovered materials like furniture and fabric, decomposed over the years and covered with blasts of rock fragments and ash likely from the volcanic eruption of Mount Vesuvius, which wiped out Pompeii&nbsp;nearly 2,000 years ago.&nbsp;

The decomposed material had left a void in the debris, which has since been filled with plaster, that reveals the original shape and contours of the long-gone material, including the outline of a crumpled blanket left on the bed netting, reported Reuters.&nbsp;

Archaeologists also noted the absence of grates, locks, or chains to restrain the room’s inhabitants, which, according to Director of the Archaeological Park of Pompeii Gabriel Zuchtriegel, suggests that the “control was primarily exerted through the internal organisation of servitude, rather than physical barriers and restraints.”&nbsp;

<h2>Site of excavation damaged</h2>

Notably, this is not the first excavation at the Civita Giuliana villa as the previous ones were carried out in 1907-08, and then again in 2017. The one conducted six years ago took place after the police found that the site was being plundered by illegal diggers.

Archaeologists said part of one of the beds had been destroyed by a tunnel used by robbers to access another part of the villa.

The site has also recently seen a burst of archaeological activity after years of decay and neglect, largely thanks to the $115.58 million European-Union-funded project, as per Reuters.

“What we are learning about the material conditions and social organization of that era opens up new horizons for historical and archaeological studies,” said Italian Culture Minister Gennaro Sangiuliano. He also said that the conservation and research efforts would continue.

Archaeologists have discovered a 2,000-year-old fresco painting which depicts what may be called the Italian pizza's ancient ancestor in the ruined city of Pompeii, said Italy's Culture Ministry on Tuesday. &nbsp;&nbsp;

According to the archaeologists, the flatbread seen in the fresco near the wine goblet was being eaten by ancestors with fruits like pomegranate or dates and dressed with a particular kind of pesto sauce and spices, added the ministry. However, the pizza-looking food item appears without the cheese and tomatoes.

The image of the flatbread was painted with the use of the fresco technique, where the painting is done on wet lime plaster by the artist.&nbsp;

The Oxford Dictionary defines fresco as "a painting done rapidly in watercolour on wet plaster on a wall or ceiling so that the colours penetrate the plaster and become fixed as it dries."&nbsp;

They were found in what is believed to be a storeroom inside the "Chaste Lovers" block, where colourful frescoes and skeletons of mules who worked the millstones for grain have been uncovered in the past.

One of the skeletons wore a ring on his left hand. The skeletons were found lying on their side with legs curled up.

Archaeologists estimate that 15 to 20 per cent of Pompeii's population died in the eruption, mostly from thermal shock as a giant cloud of gases and ash covered the city.

As documented in letters by Roman author Pliny the Younger, earthquakes before and after the eruption also took their toll.

"Among the causes of death, the collapse of buildings, in some cases due to earthquakes that accompanied the eruption, proved to be lethal," the statement said.&nbsp;

Pompeii's director, Gabriel Zuchtriegel, said modern technology was helping archaeologists "better understand the hell that completely destroyed the city of Pompeii in two days, killing many inhabitants: children, women and men".

Traces of what is believed to be a cloth bundle were found next to one of the victims, containing necklace beads and coins.&nbsp;

Inside the room was an amphora and a collection of bowls and jugs, while an adjacent room contained a home shrine in the form of a fresco, and a narrow bathroom with a toilet.&nbsp;

In the room where the men were found, part of a wall had collapsed, hitting one of the victims "whose raised arm perhaps refers to the tragic image of a vain attempt to protect himself from falling masonry", the park said.

"It's the first thing we looked at, and it looked promising, so we decided to give [DNA extraction] a shot."

"New sequencing machines can [read] several whole genomes at the same time," he said.

According to Serena Viva, an anthropologist at the University in Salento who was on the study’s team, “This could have been the reason for which they waited for it all to finish, maybe in the security of their home, compared to other victims who were fleeing and whose remains were found in open spaces.”&nbsp;

“In the future many more genomes from Pompeii can be studied,” said Viva.&nbsp;

“The victims of Pompeii experienced a natural catastrophe, a thermal shock, and it was not known that you could preserve their genetic material. This study provides this confirmation, and that new technology on genetic analysis allows us to sequence genomes also on damaged material.”

“This is a window into the precarious reality of people who rarely appear in historical sources, written almost exclusively by men belonging to the elite,” said Pompeii’s director general Gabriel Zuchtriegel.

The “unique testimony” into how “the weakest in the ancient society lived ... is certainly one of the most exciting discoveries in my life as an archaeologist,” he said in a press release.

“We can imagine here the servants, the slaves who worked in this area and came to sleep here at night,'” news agency AP quoted Gabriel Zuchtriegel, the director of Pompeii Archeological Park, as saying

A 2,000-years-old fast food restaurant that has recently been unearthed in Pompeii is all set to open to the public on August 12.

As per Telegraph, the ancient diner offered its Roman customers culinary delights, including snails, duck, pig, goat and fish.

Traces of these were found in terracotta pots that had been buried in volcanic ash since A.D. 79.&nbsp;

Massimo Osanna, director of the archaeological park of Pompeii, said the discovery of the pots gave “extraordinary insight,” into the Roman diet.

Even after archaeologists have excavated more than 80 other similar eateries, this one is the 'best preserved'.

The eatery is an ancient version of Italy’s modern day “tavola calda”, which is a cheap restaurant that serves ready to eat meals and drinks.

Inside the restaurant, one can find a fresco of a sea nymph riding a horse, which adorns a counter full of holes where steaming pots of food would have been displayed.&nbsp;

Other frescoes depict some of the meat that might have been on offers, such as a large rooster and a pair of ducks.

Lewd graffiti, which is aimed at insulting the establishment’s owner, is scratched into black paint above a fresco of a chained dog.

“Nicia cinaede cacator,” it reads.&nbsp;

As per archaeologists, this was a homophobic insult referencing a teenage boy who sleeps with older men, known as a catamite.&nbsp;

It was probably left by “a prankster who sought to poke fun at the owner,” the park wrote in a statement.

Lewd graffiti, which is aimed at insulting the establishment’s owner, is scratched into black paint above a fresco of a chained dog. “Nicia cinaede cacator,” it reads. As per archaeologists, this was a homophobic insult referencing a teenage boy who sleeps with older men, known as a catamite. It was probably left by “a prankster who sought to poke fun at the owner,” the park wrote in a statement.
