The Taliban on Friday called for emergency humanitarian aid without "political bias." Afghanistan's aid-dependent economy has been in turmoil since the Taliban took over. The nation's USD 9 billion in reserves, which are mostly held in the US, were frozen and the IMF blocked about USD 450 million.

Deputy prime minister Abdul Ghani Baradar, in a video has said that the world has an obligation to help. "In various places right now, people do not have food, accommodation, warm clothes or money. The world has to support Afghan people without any political bias and carry out their humanitarian obligations," he said.

Baradar further highlighted how the weather has worsened the economic crisis. "We call for the international community, NGOs and all the countries not to forget our poor people," he said.

Earlier in December, UN humanitarian chief Marty Griffiths called on the international community to intervene to avert further deaths. Afghanistan's economic collapse is "happening before our eye," he said.

Griffiths told The Associated Press that donor nations need to agree that, in addition to emergency humanitarian aid, they must meet Afghans' basic needs like education, hospitals, electricity and paying civil servants. As per him, it is also essential to inject liquidity into the economy, which has seen the banking system "pretty well shut down."

He further highlighted that four million children are out of school and nine million more will be soon because 70 per cent of teachers have not been paid since August.

"And if we don't make that happen, all that discussion about the right of women and girls going to school becomes academic. So, my message today is a wake-up call about the humanitarian consequences of an economic collapse and the need to take urgent action," he said.

As Pakistan's Prime Minister Imran Khan dissolved the ruling party's organisational structure, many workers of Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) have strongly reacted. The workers have expressed concern over the appointment of federal ministers as new party officials. This comes as the party had to go through a major defeat in the first phase of local body polls, which were recently held in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province of the country. PTI won less than 10 chairperson or mayor posts of the 39 seats it had contested on during the polls.

As per party leaders, people who have faltered should have been punished. A report by Dawn quotes a party leader as saying,

“We are unable to understand the wisdom behind dissolving party organisations across the country by a high-powered core committee headed by party chairman Imran Khan."

Several senior party leaders believe that the PTI could face major challenges in the upcoming elections. They further said that dissolving functional systems would not help.

As Covid cases continue to surge in England amid fears of a new variant, Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced new restrictions to curb the growing wave of the deadly virus. As a part of 'Plan B', vaccine passports have been mandated for places with larger crowds. Also, guidelines for work from home have also been issued.

The passes will be required "for entry into nightclubs and venues where large crowds gather", Johnson said. He further added, "From Monday, you should work from home if you can, go to work if you must."

With this, the government has also mandated masks in "most public indoor venues, including theatres and cinemas."

Further, Johnson urged people to get vaccinated as he said that the "single biggest thing that every one of us can do is to get our jabs and crucially to get that booster as soon as our turn arrives."

As of now, there have been 568 confirmed cases of the Omicron variant, said Health Secretary Sajid Javid. He further warned that the actual figure must be "closer to 10,000". This comes just after PM Johnson has said that early indications suggest the variant "is more transmissible than Delta". He warned that there could be a "big rise in hospitalisations".

During the brief, he said, "We must be humble in the face of this virus, the proportionate and the responsible thing to move to Plan B in England".

Elaborating on the new variant he said that it is "growing much faster than the previously dominant Delta variant and "we can't yet assume Omicron is less severe than previous variants".

This comes in amid the ongoing controversy of leaked video footage where his aides can be seen joking about an alleged Christmas party at Downing Street during last year's lockdown. He has garnered criticism by several people including politicians and media, over flouting of norms by the government when it is forcing others to follow them.

Work from home and vaccine passports: UK PM introduces Plan B to battle surge in Covid cases

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson's adviser, Allegra Stratton, has resigned after a video of her went viral. The video shows Stratton taking questions from her colleague at a mock press briefing. She can be seen joking about a "fictional" party that was "not socially distanced."

The party took place in the year 2020 when Britain was placed under a strict lockdown and millions of people were banned from meeting close family and friends for a traditional Christmas celebration.

While speaking to the reporters, Stratton said, "My remarks seemed to make light of the rules, rules that people were doing everything to obey. That was never my intention. I will regret those remarks for the rest of my days."

"I understand the anger and frustration that people feel. To all of you who lost loved ones, who endured intolerable loneliness and who struggled with your businesses, I am truly sorry and this afternoon I am offering my resignation to the Prime Minister."

As a response, Johnson vowed ''disciplinary action,'' as he announced an internal probe of the leaked footage. He even issued an apology. However, despite apologising, Johnson denied that a party took place at Downing Street.

After British Prime Minister Boris Johnson denied breaking the coronavirus norms at a party held in 10, Downing Street, a few Labour Party MPs have reported him to the police.

After British Prime Minister Boris Johnson denied breaking the coronavirus norms at a party held in 10, Downing Street, a few Labour Party MPs have reported him to the police. They claim that there were at least two parties in Downing Street last year while the entire UK was placed under a strict lockdown. As per British media reports, alcohol flowed heavily at the ''cheek by jowl'' and was attended by 40 to 50 people. Labour MP for Bermondsey and Old Southwark, Neil Coyle urged Met police commissioner, Cressida Dick to investigate a leaving do which happened in November last year and a staff Christmas party which was held in December. Coyle was quoted by The Guardian as saying, "I believe they broke the law. Most of my constituents followed the rules; those that didn’t faced penalties. Johnson is not above the law, despite his bloated self-entitlement.” Also read | British PM Boris Johnson denies flouting coronavirus restrictions at boozy party held in Downing Street Former shadow international trade secretary, Barry Gardiner, also urged Met to investigate. On April 29, the TLP had made a request to the Punjab government for its de-proscription, according to the Ministry of Interior's summary.

A prescription review committee (PRC) was then formed to deliberate on the matter. It gave the conclusion that the government's decision to declare the TLP a proscribed outfit was "based on merit". The summary said after recalling the whole episode. The views of the law ministry were also taken in the matter, it added.

Palestine's Prime Minister Dr Mohammad Shtayyeh has sought India's support for Palestinian cause at international forums like United Nations during his meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the sidelines of climate summit. India is currently a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council that has seen number of discussions on Palestine and Israel situation.

Stressing on the "great importance" Palestine attaches to "India who has a growing weight in international politics", PM Shtayyeh said, “We are ready for all forms of cooperation with India, which serves as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council for the 2021-2022, and was re-elected to the Human Rights Council for the 2022-2024 term.”

Earlier, Palestine was miffed with India's abstention at the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) resolution that called for a probe into violence in Gaza earlier this year. The resolution saw India among the 14 countries abstaining on the issue of the probe. The Palestinian foreign minister Dr Riad Malki had then written to India's external affairs minister Dr S Jaishankar expressing concern over the position taken by India.

According to the information released by Palestine Prime Minister's office, during the meet, Shtayyeh briefed the Indian PM about the "latest political developments in Palestine" and "discussed possible ways to enhance and strengthen joint relations between Palestine and India."

This was the first such meet between leaders of India and Palestine since PM Modi's visit to the de jure sovereign state in 2018. During that visit, PM Modi and Palestine's president Mahmoud Abbas had a meeting.

That was the first-ever visit by Indian PM to Palestine, and came after the 2015 visit of the then Indian President Pranab Mukherjee. Mukherjee's visit was also the first-ever visit by an Indian President to Palestine.

PM Shtayyeh also highlighted to Indian PM that that they "look forward to a well-established and distinguished Indian role in the Middle East based on the historical perspective of India’s foreign policy, foremost of which is supporting the Palestinian people’s right to self-determination and the establishment of an independent State of Palestine, with Jerusalem as its capital.”

India backs establishment of a "sovereign, viable and independent State of Palestine" within recognised and mutually agreed borders "living side by side with Israel" in peace and security taking into consideration the legitimate security concerns of Israel. It has been calling on the international community, especially the quartet comprising of UN, US, EU and Russia to faciliate peace talks between the Israeli government and the Palestinian Authority.

The Palestinian PM also lauded India's "generous financial and technical support" to the Palestinian people and pointed that the "support must be parallel and complementary with the political support of the Palestinian cause and in a manner that guarantees the implementation of international legitimacy resolutions."

India has been extending various forms of economic assistance, including construction of Jawaharlal Nehru Library at the Al Azhar University in Gaza city and the Mahatma Gandhi Library-cum-Student Activity Centre at the Palestine Technical College at Deir Al Balah in the Gaza Strip.

Two schools were built in Palestine in 2015 through aid provided by India. New Delhi also enhanced its annual contribution towards UN Relief and Works Agency in the Near East (UNRWA) from USD 1.25 Million to USD 5 Million in the back drop of financial crisis being faced by UNRWA.

With temperature rising above global average, Nepal Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba on Monday urged the world leaders to recognise the specific climate vulnerability in the mountains and accord high priority to the mountain agenda in all climate-related negotiations.

Making statement as the leader of delegation at the World Leaders Summit during the 26th Conference of Parties (COP) at the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) in Glasgow, the prime minister said due to the rising temperature, glaciers are melting, snowfall is decreasing and permafrost is melting in the Himalayan region.

Extreme climate events are increasing, leading to losses in terms of financial, ecological and human. Due to this, 80 per cent of the country’s population is at risk from natural and climate induced hazards.

“During the last 40 years, natural disasters have caused close to US$ 60 billion physical and economic damage in my country alone,” PM Deuba said in his address.

Nepal is also committed to the implementation of Paris Agreement and the country has sent an ambitious NDC plan to decarbonise the country’s economy in all sectors.

He also announced that Nepal will soon host Sagarmatha Sambad, a dialogue named after Mt Everest, to raise awareness on the climate crisis in the Himalayas. “Keeping the global temperature below 1.5° Celsius is vital for mountain people. It is an issue of our survival,” said Deuba.

Speaking about Nepal’s efforts to balance development and climate, the prime minister said, “We have mechanisms to ensure that international climate finance is channelled to support transformational approaches in implementing adaptation, mitigation and disaster management actions together.”

“We are engaging with all stakeholders including private sector, indigenous people, disadvantaged communities, women and youth in all our climate actions. Recognising the value of nature to both adapt and mitigate climate change, we have decided to create a dedicated institution for working on nature conservation and climate change together,” he stated.

Nepal further called upon parties to agree on making ‘loss and damage’ a stand-alone agenda for negotiations and support the framework of additional financing for it as “loss and damage has become a key concern due to increased phenomena of climate induced disasters.

The COP26 must ensure adequate support for adaptation in the most vulnerable counties by scaling up financial, technological and capacity-building resources.

“We can deliver on our goals only through quick, direct and easy access to climate finance. We urge the parties to agree on a clear roadmap for a new collective, quantified and ambitious goal on climate finance before 2025,” PM Deuba stated.

Prime Minister Deuba also met his Indian counterpart Narendra Modi at the conference.

"Met PM @SherBDeuba in Glasgow. It is important we keep working together for sustainable development. He rightly highlighted the threat of climate change to the Himalayan region," Modi said in a tweet.

Both leaders are scheduled to hold a bilateral meeting later in the day.

Israel's Prime Minister Naftali Bennett visited Russian President Vladimir Putin for the first on Friday for talks expected to focus on Iran.

Naftali took office in June, following Benjamin Netanyahu who was in power for 12 years and had close ties with Putin.

Russian state television aired footage of the pair meeting ahead of the talks in the Black Sea resort city of Sochi.

Putin said the two countries have "unique" ties and hoped for "continuity" of the "trusting relationship" he developed with Israel's previous government.

Bennett told Putin that Israel views him as "a true friend of the Jewish people" and praised the Soviet war effort in fighting Nazi Germany.

He said the pair will discuss the "situation in Syria and our efforts to prevent a breakthrough in Iran's military nuclear program".

As he left for Sochi, Bennett said Israel's relations with Moscow are an "important element" of the country's foreign policy.

This was in part due, he said, "to the million Russian speakers in Israel, who constitute a bridge between the two countries".

The visit may be one of Putin's last face-to-face meetings with a foreign leader before Russia's new Covid restrictions come into force next week.

The Kremlin has said the 69-year-old will scrap in-person meetings during a nationwide week-long holiday starting October 30 designed to curb record virus deaths.

Last week, Bennett's office said the pair will discuss Iran's nuclear programme.

Moscow is one of the signatories to a 2015 deal that saw sanctions relief for Iran in exchange for limits to its nuclear capability.

Former US president Donald Trump withdrew from the deal in 2018 and reimposed harsh sanctions, leading Tehran to gradually roll back its commitments under the agreement.

Bennett told the United Nations General Assembly last month that Israel "will not allow Iran to acquire a nuclear weapon."

Putin had congratulated Bennett after he was sworn in and said that Russian-Israeli cooperation would help strengthen "peace, security and stability in the Middle East."

Bennett told the United Nations General Assembly last month that Israel "will not allow Iran to acquire a nuclear weapon." Putin had congratulated Bennett after he was sworn in and said that Russian-Israeli cooperation would help strengthen "peace, security and stability in the Middle East."

Japan's new prime minister, Fumio Kishida, defended his pro-nuclear energy policies on Wednesday, saying that re-starting nuclear power plants mothballed since the 2011 Fukushima disaster was vital.

Energy became a key issue during the ruling Liberal Democratic Party's (LDP) recent leadership race, during which Kishida beat Taro Kono, a former vaccine minister who had spoken out against nuclear energy, to become prime minister.

"It's crucial that we re-start nuclear power plants," Kishida said as he faced opposition questions in parliament for the first time since becoming prime minister last week.

Kishida was responding to questions from Yukio Edano, leader of the main opposition Constitutional Democratic Party of Japan (CDPJ), on the government's policy for sustainable energy and if nuclear power would be part of the plan.

Nuclear energy has been contentious in Japan, especially since a 2011 earthquake off the coast triggered a tsunami that smashed into a nuclear power plant in the Fukushima region north of Tokyo, causing one of the world's worst nuclear accidents.

All of Japan's nuclear power plants were shut down after the disaster, which highlighted failings in regulation and oversight. While some reactors have been coming back on stream, most remain shut.

Kishida is leading the LDP into a general election on October 31 when priorities for many voters will likely be bringing an end to the coronavirus pandemic and rebuilding a weak economy.

Many of Japan's hospitals have struggled during a fifth and most fatal wave of the coronavirus, though infections rates have begun to come down in recent days.

Prime Minister Fumio Kishida said on Friday he would do his utmost to lead Japan out of the COVID-19 crisis, while protecting its territory and people in an increasingly tough security environment.

Kishida took the top job in the world's third-largest economy on Monday, replacing Yoshihide Suga, who had seen his support undermined by surging COVID-19 infections. Daily cases have recently fallen and a long state of emergency was lifted this month.

"I'm determined to devote body-and-soul to overcome this national crisis with the people, carve out a new era and pass on to the next generation a country whose citizens are rich at heart," Kishida said in his first policy speech to parliament.

A big early test for him will be leading his ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) into a general election on October 31.

The 64-year-old former foreign minister, who has a reputation as a low-key consensus builder, said the government would quickly put together a stimulus package to support those hit hard by the pandemic and take legislative steps to secure medical resources.

He did not specify the size of the stimulus package in his speech but last month he suggested a sum of 30 trillion yen ($268 billion).

Earlier, Finance Minister Shunichi Suzuki said he hoped to compile an extra budget to fund the stimulus immediately after the elections and have it approved by parliament by year-end.

Kishida underscored the need to support those in need to win public cooperation and he called for cash payouts to companies hit hard by the pandemic.

He also pledged to give cash payouts to so-called non-regular workers, families with children, and those struggling to make ends meet because of the pandemic.

Kishida reiterated his resolve to overcome deflation and said he would press on with bold monetary easing, expeditious fiscal spending and a strategy for growth.

"We will conduct fiscal spending without hesitation to respond to crises and make sure all possible measures are taken," he said.

On national security and foreign affairs, Kishida said he would protect Japan's peace and stability.

Japan faces China's rapid military buildup and aggressive maritime expansion, as the threat from North Korea's nuclear and missile programmes.

Kishida said he planned to update national security strategy and aimed to bolster the coast guard and missile defence capabilities.

On ties with giant neighbour China, Kishida said building stable relations and maintaining dialogue were important but Japan would not mince words when necessary.

"While working with countries with which we share universal values, we say what needs to be said to China and demand firmly that it behave responsibly. We also maintain dialogue and continue cooperating with them in tackling common issues," he said.

China claims almost all of the energy-rich waters of the South China Sea, where it has established military outposts on artificial islands. It also claims a group of Japanese-administered islets in the East China Sea.

Pandora Papers leak: Pak Opposition seeks PM's resignation, tainted ministers' removal

Japan's parliament votes Monday to approve Fumio Kishida as the country's next prime minister, with the new leader expected to announce a cabinet including both holdovers and fresh faces.

The soft-spoken scion of a Hiroshima political family, Kishida beat popular vaccine chief Taro Kono to win leadership of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party last week.

The victory effectively ensures he will win a vote later Monday in parliament, where the LDP's ruling coalition holds a commanding majority, and become leader of the world's third largest economy.

Speaking before the vote Monday morning, Kishida said he was ready for the top job.

"I think it will be a new start in its true sense," he told reporters.

"I want to take on challenges with a strong will and firm resolve to face the future."

Kishida is widely considered a safe pair of hands, who commands support from his own faction within the LDP and is not expected to veer significantly from the government's existing policies.

His election came after former prime minister Yoshihide Suga, who submitted his resignation on Monday morning, announced he would not stand for the LDP leadership after just one year in office.

Kishida will unveil his new cabinet on Monday afternoon, but details reported in local media suggested he would keep on several ministers in key portfolios.

Both Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi and Defence Minister Nobuo Kishi will retain their jobs, local media reported.

Motegi is a Harvard-educated political veteran who has taken the lead in negotiating key trade deals, while Kishi is the brother of former prime minister Shinzo Abe.

The finance portfolio will go to Shunichi Suzuki, who is replacing his own brother-in-law Taro Aso.

Suzuki, 68, is also a veteran politician and the son of a former prime minister. He has served in government before, holding both the Olympic minister and environment minister posts.

- Pandemic recovery, election ahead -

The cabinet will reportedly include three women, among them his one-time rival for the leadership Seiko Noda, who will become minister in charge of addressing Japan's declining birthrate.

The posts of vaccine minister and digital minister will also be held by women, with several members of the cabinet appointed to their first ministerial post.

Kishida faces a raft of challenges, from trying to steer a post-pandemic economic recovery to confronting the military threats posed by North Korea and China.

He will also be leading the LDP in general elections that must happen by November.

Local media reported Monday that Kishida is now expected to hold the vote on October 31, a few weeks earlier than expected.

The ruling party and its coalition party are widely expected to retain power, but could be vulnerable to losing some seats with the public unhappy about the government's response to the coronavirus.

Suga's government saw its approval ratings slump as it struggled to tackle waves of infection, including a record virus spike over the summer while the Olympics were being held.

Kishida's leadership campaign emphasised his plans to correct government missteps on the pandemic, including a pledge to unleash new economic stimulus.

Much of Japan has been under virus emergency measures for a large part of the year, with the restrictions finally lifting last week as new infections decline.

Around 60 per cent of the population is now vaccinated, but there are concerns that the country's healthcare system could easily become overwhelmed again in a new virus wave.

"I want to take on challenges with a strong will and firm resolve to face the future." Kishida is widely considered a safe pair of hands, who commands support from his own faction within the LDP and is not expected to veer significantly from the government's existing policies. - Pandemic recovery, election ahead - The cabinet will reportedly include three women, among them his one-time rival for the leadership Seiko Noda, who will become minister in charge of addressing Japan's declining birthrate. Fumio Kishida to be approved Japan's next PM

The United States will have to recognise the Taliban government in Afghanistan "sooner or later", said Pakistan’s Prime Minister Imran Khan.

In an interview with TRT World, the Pakistan PM said, "They [US] are trying to find scapegoats and one of them is Pakistan." He emphasised that this was not a rational mindset for a way forward.

The prime minister has slammed US claims of Pakistan being responsible for the Afghan fallout. "Whenever this anger goes and some rationality appears in the US, they will realise how could Pakistan be responsible for this," he added.

If you analyse, the PM said, the conclusion will be anything except [blame for] Pakistan.

The US Senate Foreign Relations Committee hearings clearly implied that Americans were "completely surprised" by the Taliban coming back to power, the PM added.

Over the withdrawal of troops from Afghanistan, the leader says the US President Joe Biden is being "unfairly targeted". Khan questioned how it could be anyone's fault when the Afghan army collapsed itself.

“The American public had no idea what was going on in Afghanistan. Gen Kayani in 2010 told President Obama that there was no military solution in Afghanistan,” added Khan.

The Pakistani leader insisted that if the US kept Afghan reserves frozen and the government collapsed in its aftermath, “the biggest loser will be the people of the country.”

Seeking a reconciliation, the leader also said the Pakistani government is in talks with some groups of the Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP).

US will have to recognise Taliban regime sooner or later, says Pakistan PM Imran Khan

Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan is a master at the twisting, modifying, and blending fact and fiction to suit his purposes.

He gave his third UNGA speech as prime minister of Pakistan on Friday, and his speech, delivered over video, was clearly three times more disgraceful.

The Pakistani prime minister attempted to portray Pakistan as the victim of American ungratefulness and an international double standards, in a prerecorded speech aired on Friday evening.

“For some reason, Pakistan has been blamed for the current crisis in Afghanistan by politicians in the United States and some politicians in Europe,” Khan remarked.

“From this platform, I want them all to know that, aside from Afghanistan, Pakistan was the country that suffered the most when we joined the US war on terror after 9/11,” he said, referring to the 11 September, 2001 terror attacks carried out by al Qaeda that led to US invasion of Afghanistan and the eventual killing of the terror group's chief Osama bin Laden, in Pakistan.

"The only reason we suffered so much was that we became an ally of the US, of the coalition, in the war against Afghanistan, where attacks were being conducted from Afghan soil into Pakistan. At least there should have been a word of appreciation. But rather than appreciation, imagine how we feel when we are blamed for the turn of events in Afghanistan".

In his failed attempt, Khan also tried to portray the Taliban as a positive force.

Acting as the Taliban's messenger once more, he pleaded with world leaders to assist them by bolstering, stabilising, and rewarding them. It was almost as if the Taliban, which tried and failed to speak at UNGA, had dispatched Imran Khan to the UN to represent them.

In Panjshir, Pakistan's nefarious role in war-torn Afghanistan was exposed when its military drones and helicopters supported Taliban in capturing the province from the Afghan National Resistance Front.

Taliban apologist Imran Khan remarked, "According to the UN, half the people of Afghanistan are already vulnerable. And by next year, almost 90% of the people in Afghanistan will go below the poverty line. There is a huge humanitarian crisis looming ahead. This will have serious repercussions not just for the neighbours of Afghanistan but it will have repercussions everywhere."

"We must strengthen the present government, stabilise it for the sake of the people of Afghanistan. What have the Taliban promised? They will respect human rights, they will have an inclusive government, they will not allow the soil to be used by terrorists and they have given amnesty. If the world community incentivises them, encourages them to walk the talk, it will be a win-win situation for everyone," he added.

He said that if the world helps the Taliban, the country would not be used for international terrorism.

But the reality is that, with the Taliban regaining power and a witches' brew of terrorist factions active in the country, it is in a state of chaos. Afghanistan has already established itself as the new jihadi capital.

Global jihad is seeing a revival. It's happening right in front of the Taliban's eyes, and Taliban apologist Imran Khan wants to reward these individuals.

It was for India’s government that Khan reserved his harshest words, once again labelling Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government “fascist.”

Khan described India as a place where fear reigns supreme. Muslims are persecuted in this country, and Kashmiris are denied their rights, he claimed.

He went so far as to accuse the West of being biased towards India.

Pakistan's use of a worldwide platform to make personal statements has become an annual event. Imran's speech is an insult to the United Nations.

Sneha Dubey, India's young diplomat, gave a stinging response loaded with the facts to Pakistan's allegations regarding Kashmir before the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).

Dubey used her Right of Reply to criticise Imran Khan's references to Kashmir in his UN General Assembly virtual speech, claiming that Islamabad has a long history of deliberately aiding terrorists.

Dubey, First Secretary of India said at UNGA, "Regrettably, this is not the first time the leader of Pakistan has misused platforms provided by the UN to propagate false and malicious propaganda against my country, and seeking in vain to divert the world's attention from the sad state of his country where terrorists enjoy free pass while the lives of ordinary people, especially those belonging to the minority communities, are turned upside down."

Taliban can be partners in peace for US, Pakistan, says Prime Minister Imran Khan

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez flew to La Palma as Mount Cumbre Vieja erupts in El Paso, spewing out columns of smoke, ash and lava as seen from Los Llanos de Aridane on the Canary island of La Palma.

Canary Islands Volcanology Institute reported the initial eruption shortly after 3pm near the southern end of the island, which saw its last eruption in 1971. La Palma, with a population of 85,000, is one of the eight volcanic islands in Spain’s Canary Islands archipelago off Africa’s western coast. As per authorities, thousands have been evacuated.

A 4.2-magnitude earthquake was recorded before the eruption, which took place in an area known as Cabeza de Vaca.

According to local officials, the lava eventually destroyed at least eight houses which led to at least one chalet with a tower to crumble. Authorities have warned that the lava flows could also threaten the municipalities of El Paraiso, Alcala, and surrounding areas.

Sánchez has postponed his departure to New York for the UN General Assembly in order to travel to La Palma because of the volcanic eruption.

"I am at the moment heading to the Canary Islands because of the seismic evolution, to see first-hand the situation in La Palma, the coordination of the means, and the protocols that have been activated," Sánchez tweeted.

While speaking to AFP, a regional government spokeswoman said "a number of houses have been destroyed". She further added that they were still surveying the area to determine how many properties had been engulfed.

Sergio Rodriguez, mayor of the nearby village of El Paso said at least 20 homes were completely destroyed by the volcano. "The lava left absolutely nothing in its path", Rodriguez told TVE broadcaster, saying residents were living in uncertainty.

They will "not be going home for a while, that's for sure", he added.
