PM Modi launches ambitious Swachh Bharat Mission-Urban 2.0, AMRUT 2.0

When the Indian government revealed that the US was repatriating 157 antiquities and artefacts (either stolen or smuggled out of India), during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent US visit, it was a significant milestone on many counts, and it offered hope for many more to follow.

Here’s some statistics to ponder upon: between the years 1970 and 2000, India recovered 19 antiquities from abroad, between the years 2000 and 2013, none were recovered, between 2013 and 2021 August, about 53 had been recovered; and in the past week, 157 were recovered, as per the India Pride Project, an NGO that works towards the restoration and recovery of India’s heritage.

In pictures: 157 artefacts that PM Modi is bringing to India on his way back from US trip

At face value, the recovered artefacts might mean different things to different people. But, for the volunteers of India Pride Project, this means years of their tireless efforts coming to fruition and offers them more hope to continue in pursuit of such looted and lost treasures of Indian heritage.

While a team of volunteers monitors social media for any Indian objects going on sale, the core team works on research and coordinating with law enforcement agencies to ensure the lawful return of artifacts. WION spoke to S Vijay Kumar, co-founder of the India Pride Project, to understand their journey into the world of art, identifying and tracing stolen art and the efforts that follow, before getting the antiques to where they belong.

According to Vijay, the latest trove of 157 heritage works was recovered from the collections of five art smugglers/dealers/thieves/exhibitors, who operated and made millions in the international market via illegal sales. The big names are Subhash Kapoor (Art of Past Gallery), Doris and Nancy Wierner (Wierner Gallery), Nayef Homsi, UK dealers who had exhibited stolen idols during the 2016 Asia Week in New York along with the Punnainallur Nataraja from Asia Society Museum. At different points in time, over the last decade, these individuals and their warehouses were held and raided by US authorities.

"Our work and coordination has primarily been with the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Department of Homeland Security and Colonel Matthew Bogdanos, Assistant District Attorney, New York and Art Expert Apsara Iyer in his team, besides the Indian authorities. The authorities send us pictures known as ‘robber offering photos’ that depict fresh loot, which are meant to be sent to collectors abroad. We use these pictures and compare them with our database and undertake the extremely time-consuming process of cross-verifying and matching them with old records. After sourcing irrefutable proof, we reach out to the authorities and request the retrieval of the artefact" Vijay Kumar elaborated.

According to India Pride Project, some of the significant artifacts from the present lot of 157 are the Punnainallur Chola Bronze Nataraja, Chamunda ex Dakshina Candi temple Orissa , Chola bronze Alingana murthy from Deepambalpuram seized from Ball State Museum, a Pala stone steele of Vishnu seized from the Harn Museum, Chola Stone Lingothbava seized from Birmingham Museum and a host of Terracota stoneware from Chandraketugarh seized from the Toledo Museum (Ohio) and Honalulu Museum. However, the team is hopeful that this is only the first batch of heritage articles from the US and that many more batches would follow. Some of the major expectations in the upcoming batches are pinned own the return of the Thachur Murugan from Tamil Nadu, host of Chola bronzes from Sripuranthan, the Barhut Yakshi from Madhya Pradesh, the Chola stone Nagapattinam Buddha etc..

The team’s biggest regret and trigger has been how India’s ‘Living God’s’ or ‘Murtis’ that are meant to be placed in the sanctum sanctorum of temples adorn the swimming pools and living rooms of the ignorant and rich Westerners, who only see them as idols that can be purchased. They firmly believe that India’s authorities at the state-level must wake up to the reality of such thefts of historical artefacts and how they are smuggled out of the country. A constant lament of those working in this sector has been how Indian Law has helped smugglers rather than protecting the heritage articles - In India, idol or artefact theft is punishable with seven years imprisonment and a fine of Rs.3000. This is said to be in stark contrast to Egypt and China, where theft from tombs attract as much as capital punishment.

While most countries track down their heritage articles that go on sale abroad and demand the proof of ownership from the sellers, India is said to have been following the method where the onus of proving lay on itself. This is another major stumbling block in tracing and retrieving the artifacts from high-profile museums and auctions that take place abroad.

Despite the obstacles that come their way, the India Pride Project team remains committed to restoring Indian Pride and heritage and labours on from the different locations that they are spread across, while also carrying on with their professions.

Behind the scenes story of how India recovered 157 idols, artefacts from the US

US President Joe Biden's statements slapping at US media for asking questions that aren't 'on topic' in front of a foreign head of state were defended by White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki, who said his words weren't meant as a 'hard cut' on them.

Jen Psaki was grilled by the media on Monday about Biden's remarks to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in which he advised his counterpart not to answer questions and appeared to attack US journalists.

"I think what he said is that they’re not always "on point." Now, I know that it isn’t something that anyone wants to hear here. But what I think he was conveying is, you know, today, he might want to talk about Covid vaccines; some of the questions were about that. He might want to talk about something else, and some of the questions are not always about the topic he’s talking about that day, " Psaki said.

"I don’t think it was meant to be a hard cut at the members of the media – people he has taken questions from today and on Friday as well," she said.

What exactly happened:

While sitting in the Oval Office with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on September 24, President Biden took a jab at the American press.

"The Indian press is much better behaved than the American press.I think, with your permission, you could not answer questions because they won’t ask any questions on point," Biden began on Friday as they sat down.

According to Reporters Without Borders, India is ranked 142nd in the world when it comes to press freedom, and the US is ranked 44th in the world.

To this, Psaki said, "I would just say to you that having now worked for the President, serving in this role for nine months, having seen that he's taking questions from the press more than 140 times, that he certainly respects the role of the press, the freedom of the free press."

"We ensure that we have a press with us, of course, when we travel; that we have a press with us for sprays in foreign capitals; and we will continue to. And I think that should speak to his commitment to freedom of the press around the world, " she said.

In the past, Biden has lauded the importance of reporters and journalism, but he has also expressed dissatisfaction with the coverage of him and his administration, as well as the questions he is asked while interacting with the press.

Biden was sitting in the Oval Office with Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa Al-Kadhimi in late July when NBC's Kelly O'Donnell questioned him about Veterans Affairs Secretary Denis McDonough's declaration that frontline VA personnel would have to undergo Covid-19 vaccines.

"You are such a pain in the neck," Biden replied, smiling, "but I'm going to answer your question because we've known each other for so long."

"It has nothing to do with Iraq … I’ll answer your question. Yes, Veteran Affairs is going to, in fact, require that all doctors working in their facilities are going to have to be vaccinated," he added.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently concluded a "successful and comprehensive" three-day visit to the United States, where he held productive bilateral and multilateral engagements, attended the Quad summit and addressed the UN General Assembly. In total, he participated in 20 meetings during his stay of 65 hours in the US, with additional four long meetings in flight, making it 24 meetings throughout the visit. For a normal person, it is quite a lot of work but PM Modi certainly has mastered the art of maintaining a high level of energy while keeping his extremely busy schedule. He always looks fresh despite staying awake for longer hours on international trips. IN PICS | PM Narendra Modi ends US visit with a powerful speech at UNGA, here's look back at his significant tour Although PM advocates the benefits of yoga and constantly promotes a healthy lifestyle, a curious mind will ask what's his secret to keeping jetlag away during foreign trips. Well, official sources said that one of his tricks is to pack his hours with back-to-back engagements so that it doesn't let the mind think much about any fatigue. "When he used to visit the US in the 1990s, an airline at that time used to give a monthly travel pass at heavily discounted rates. To make the most of it, Modi would always travel in the night as this ensured that he could visit most places while not having to spend a penny on hotels. His night would be invariably spent at the airport and in the plane," a source said. IN PICS | 157 artefacts that PM Modi is bringing to India on his way back from US trip × The sources said that PM Modi tunes his body and sleep cycle as per the time zone of the destination he is travelling to. Suppose, if it is night in India when he takes off, he may not sleep if it would be day in the country of destination. He follows the same process when returning to India. PM Modi also ensures drinking a lot of water as doctors suggest that the air in the plane sucks out moisture in the body, they added. (With inputs from agencies)

Addressing the world leaders at the 76th session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York on Saturday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced that India is moving towards 450GW renewable energy. "India to become the world's biggest Green Hydrogen hub. We are answerable to future generations with our decision making," said PM Modi. It is the hydrogen fuel that is created using renewable energy instead of fossil fuels. Hydrogen can also be produced by the electrolysis of water, which is using an electric current to break water. #LIVE | India moving towards 450GW renewable energy. India to become the world's biggest Green Hydrogen hub. We are answerable to future generations with our decision making: @narendramodi at #UNGA #WIONatUNGA pic.twitter.com/TTH5obvJoZ — WION (@WIONews) September 25, 2021 × If this electric current is produced by a renewable source, for instance, solar PV or a wind turbine, the clean hydrogen produced is known as green hydrogen. Also, if renewable energy is used to generate electricity for the electrolysis of water then the green hydrogen can be generated without any harmful emissions. What makes green hydrogen 'green'? Hydrogen, on Earth, does not appear pure in nature and requires energy to separate. The most common technique is to extract hydrogen from water. This is done by using heat and chemical reactions to release hydrogen from organic materials such as fossil fuels. Also read | PM Modi at UNGA: Covid taught world that global economy should be more diversified However, this can be enormously polluting. Worldwide hydrogen production is responsible for CO2 emissions, which are equivalent to that of the United Kingdom and Indonesia combined. There is a cleaner way of getting hydrogen, which is, through electrolysis. Hydrogen atoms form hydrogen molecules and oxygen molecules pair up too. Each can then be bottled up. If the electricity is generated from renewable sources such as solar or wind, the production of hydrogen in this way emits no greenhouse gasses. Also, this is how different shades of hydrogen are created. These include brown hydrogen, grey hydrogen, blue hydrogen, and green hydrogen. Can be expensive While conventional hydrogen and blue hydrogen cost about $2 per kilogram, green hydrogen is around twice as much. That price, however, is falling steeply with renewable energy prices and cheaper costs to make equipment used for electrolysis, called electrolysers. An Australian National University report last year estimated Australia could currently produce green hydrogen at about $3.18-3.80 per kg and at $2 per kg by the end of the decade. At that price, it would be cost-competitive with fossil fuels, experts say.

He went on to say that talent and people-to-people connections will determine this decade. The following are PM Modi's important White House quotes: I'd like to express my gratitude to President Joe Biden for his kind greeting. I remember our encounters in 2014 and 2016. You had outlined your vision for India-US relations at the time. I'm delighted to see you're working to make this idea a reality. There is much to be done in trade. Trade will be an important factor in India-USA ties in the coming decade. Today's bilateral summit is important. We are meeting at the start of the third decade of this century. Your leadership will certainly play an important role in how this decade is shaped. The seeds have been sown for an even stronger friendship between India and the US. I am glad the Indian diaspora is making an active contribution to the USA's progress. Gandhi Ji's Jayanti was mentioned by President Joe Biden. Trade is an important factor in India-US ties, PM Modi tells US President Biden

The relationship between India and the United States, the world's two greatest democracies, is destined to become stronger, closer, and tighter, US President Joe Biden said on Friday as he hosted Prime Minister Narendra Modi for their first in-person bilateral summit.

"Every day, four million Indian-Americans strengthen the United States," Biden told Modi.

He stated the two countries were beginning a new chapter in India-United States relations.

"I have known you for a long time. I am glad that you have come back to the White House… You are well aware of our history… Our relationship has always been good," Biden told Modi.

They have met before when Biden was vice president, but this is the first time Biden is hosting Modi since becoming the 46th US president in January.

Here are some quotes from US President Joe Biden's remarks to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi:

"Welcome. I want to welcome my friend, who I've known for some time, back to the White House. And Mr Prime Minister, we're going to continue to build on our strong partnership."

"When I showed the Prime Minister to his seat, I pointed out that seat is occupied almost every day by an Indian American."

"The Vice President's mother was from India, a scientist and a remarkable woman, " he said, referring to Shyamala Gopalan Harris, the mother of his deputy Kamala Harris.

"As I think you know, Mr Prime Minister, I've long believed that the US-India relationship can help us solve an awful lot of global challenges."

"In fact, back in 2006, I sent that hope out where I said that by 2020... India and the United States would be among the closest nations in the world to one another."

"And maybe I shouldn't – these are not part of my prepared remarks, but when I was in Mumbai as vice president, I finished meeting with the equivalent of the chamber of commerce. And afterwards, the Indian press asked me, "Do I have any relatives in India?"

"And I said I'm not sure but, when I was elected as a 29-year-old in kid in 1972, before I was sworn in, I got a letter from a person named Biden – last name – in Mumbai, from Mumbai. And I said, but I was never able to follow up."

Biden turned to Modi and quipped: "That's hard for an Irishman to admit."

Biden then said to the press: "I shouldn't be so casual with you all. I hope you understand the humour in it. The end result was, he apparently stayed and married an Indian woman and I've never been able to track it down, so the whole purpose of this meeting is for him to help me figure out."

During his ongoing visit to the US, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi met US Vice President Kamala Harris, Australian PM Scott Morrison and Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga. As a special gesture, the PM Modi gave gifts to all of them. He presented US Vice President Kamala Harris with a copy of old notifications related to her grandfather, Shri PV Gopalan in a wooden handicraft frame. Shri PV Gopalan was a senior and respected government official who served in various positions. He also gifted Vice President Harris with a Gulabi Meenakari chess set. The intricate details on each piece on this chess set show that it is remarkably handcrafted. The bright colours reflect the vibrancy of Kashi which is one of the oldest cities in the world. Prime Minister Modi gifted a silver Gulabi Meenakari ship to his Australian counterpart Scott Morrison. The ship is distinctly handcrafted, reflecting Kashi’s dynamism. To his Japanese counterpart, PM Modi gifted a sandalwood Buddha statue. Buddhism in Japan is practised since the sixth century. Also, it plays a major role in bringing India and Japan together. During his previous visits to Japan, PM Modi had visited Buddhist temples. Earlier as well, the PM had performed such gestures during his meetings with the former Prime Minister of Israel Benjamin Netanyahu, Queen Elizabeth, and former President of Iran Hassan Rouhani. On his trip to Israel, PM Modi presented Netanyahu with replicas of 2 sets of copper plates from Kerala believed to be inscribed in 9-10th century CE. Also, he presented the British monarch with some award-winning Darjeeling tea from the Makaibari tea estate in West Bengal. He gifted this along with organic honey from J&K. For Rouhani, the PM presented specially commissioned reproductions of Mirza Asadullah Khan Ghalib’s collection of poetry in Persian, known as the Kulliyat-e-Farsi-e-Ghalib. On meeting former US President Donald Trump, PM Modi presented a variety of gifts. This included a handcrafted Himachali silver bracelet, tea and honey from Kangra Valley, hand-woven shawls from Jammu and Kashmir. The collection of gifts also comprised a wooden chest with an intricate inlay pattern.
