Aircraft carrying Yevgeny Prigozhin may have been downed on purpose: Kremlin

Russia has informed Brazil's aircraft investigation authority that it will not probe the crash of the Brazilian-made Embraer jet that killed mercenary boss Yevgeny Prigozhin under international rules "at the moment", the Brazilian agency told Reuters on Tuesday.

Prigozhin, two top lieutenants of his Wagner Group and four bodyguards were among 10 people who died when the Embraer Legacy 600 crashed north of Moscow last week.

He died two months to the day after staging a brief mutiny against the Russian defense establishment that posed the biggest challenge to President Vladimir Putin's rule since he rose to power in 1999.

Brazil's Center for Research and Prevention of Aeronautical Accidents (CENIPA), in the interests of improving aviation safety, had said it would join a Russian-led investigation if it were invited and the probe held under international rules.

Russia’s aviation authority was not obligated to say yes to CENIPA, but some former investigators said it should, as the U.S. and other Western governments suspect the Kremlin of being behind the Aug. 23 crash of the Embraer Legacy 600, which has a good safety record.

The Kremlin denies any involvement.

According to the Montreal-based United Nations International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), the flight from Moscow with a destination of St Petersburg was domestic, so it is not subject to international rules known throughout the industry by their legal name "Annex 13."

Pilot of US F-18 military jet killed after 'accidental' crash near San Diego: Reports

Here, we bring you the news that is trending across WION's social media platforms- Russian President Vladimir Putin finally broke his silence over the apparent death of Wagner ChiefYevgeny Prigozhin while expressing condolences over the plane crash. Putin says the Wagner boss was a talented man who made mistakes.

What's next for Wagner group after Prigozhin's death?

The death of Prigozhin leaves Putin stronger in the short term, removing a powerful figure that launched a mutiny against top brass and threatened to make him look weak. However, it would also deprive Putin of a forceful and astute player who had proved his utility to the Kremlin. Prigozhin sent his fighters into some of the bloodiest battles of the Ukraine war and advanced Russian interests across Africa, which are now likely to be re-organised. To understand this better watch this interview with a senior fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations Charles Kupchan.

Reports have mentioned that siblings Lesly, Soleiny, Tien Noriel and Cristin — aged 13, nine, five and one, respectively — were receiving treatment at a military hospital in Bogota.
News agencies quoted welfare officials as saying on Monday (June 12) that the kids are recovering and in "high spirits". In a video sent to the media, Adriana Velasquez of the Colombian Family Welfare Institute said that the children have been colouring, and drawing. "They love to talk," she said, further mentioning that they are even drawing a picture thought to depict a missing army search dog.

Colombia plane crash: Rescued kids face custody battle between relatives

4 Colombian children survived a deadly plane crash and spent 40 days in the Amazon rainforest. The children lost their mother in the crash. A custody battle has now broken out among the relatives. Molly Gambhir tells you more.

Gravitas: How 4 children survived a plane crash

The mother of the four children, who managed to survive in the dense Amazon forest for six weeks, was alive for four days after their plane crashed. However, fearing for her children's safety, she told them to leave her and move ahead to increase their chances of being rescued.

The heart-wrenching details of the woman's last days came forth as more information emerged about the astonishing feat of endurance of the rescued children.

On Sunday, the father of two rescued kids Manuel Ranoque, while speaking to reporters, said that his wife Magdalena Mucutuy had survived the plane crash, however, she succumbed to her injuries four days later.

“My daughter has told me that their mother was alive for four days,” Ranoque said.

“Before she died, she said to them: ‘Maybe you should go. You guys are going to see the kind of man your dad is, and he’s going to show you the same kind of great love that I have shown you,” he added.

The children, who are members of the Huitoto Indigenous community, were found by military sniffer dogs after they spent more than a month in a jungle where snakes, mosquitoes and other animals abound.

The children’s great-uncle Fidencio Valencia said that kids had survived by eating farina or cassava flour and by using the knowledge they have of the rainforest’s fruits.

“When the plane crashed, they took farina (from the wreckage), and with that they survived,” he said while speaking to reporters outside the hospital, where the children are likely to remain for a minimum of two weeks.

“After the farina ran out, they began to eat seeds,” added Valencia. The kids appeared to have survived because of their eldest sibling, Lesly who ensured that they are safe and nourished by using the information of the rainforest which her mother had given to her.

The timing of the plane crash was also in favour of the children. Head of the Colombian Institute of Family Welfare Astrid Caceres said that the youngsters were able to eat fruit because “the jungle was in harvest”.

“They will tell their stories and you will hear them,” stated Ranoque, after visiting the children at the military hospital of Bogota.

A Paris court, on Monday (April 17) acquitted the carrier Air France and plane maker Airbus over the 2009 crash of a Rio-Paris flight which killed 228 people. The two France-based companies had gone on trial back in October to determine their responsibility for the worst aviation disaster in Air France’s history.

2009 Rio-Paris crash: Court acquits Air France, Airbus of involuntary manslaughter

Nearly 14 years after the passenger plane flying from Rio de Janeiro to Paris crashed into the Atlantic, a French court has cleared European plane manufacturer Airbus in the 2009 Rio Paris plane crash case. Air France had been charged with involuntary manslaughter.

Did Airbus suppress fatal flaw in its plane till the 2009 crash?

Two France-based aviation giants went on trial last October over the crash of Air France Flight 447 some 13 years ago. On Monday (April 17), a Paris court acquitted the two companies that have been blamed for one of the worst aviation disasters which killed 228 passengers and crew in 2009.

Here is a timeline of the series of events related to the case:

June 2009

On June 1, 2009, Air France flight AF447 took off from Rio in Brazil and was en route to Paris before disappearing off the radar in the middle of a storm. It took a little over four minutes for the plane to fall 11,500 metres out of the sky. Days later, the wreckage was found of the Airbus A330 which was crossing the night sky during a storm over the Atlantic between Brazil and Senegal and vanished without a Mayday sign.

May 2011

After two years and a multi-million-dollar search, the aircraft’s “black boxes” or flight recorders were found nearly 4,000 metres (13,000 feet) below sea level. The search effort involved combing 17,000 square kilometres of the ocean bed at depths of up to 4,000 metres for nearly 22 months.

October 2011

Lawyers and victims’ families were allowed to listen to the in-flight voice recording of the pilots’ final minutes for the first time. “We’ve lost our speeds,” said one pilot, as recorded warning sounds of “stall, stall, stall” were heard and the aircraft began to plunge towards the sea. In the same year, the two aviation giants were being investigated for manslaughter.

Findings and reports from the retrieved black box

Over the next couple of years, sporadic findings and reports emerged about the crash. One of them said the plane had entered what is called an “intertropical convergence zone” which is said to often produce volatile storms with heavy precipitation.

Reports indicated that the plane’s speed sensors had been iced up and errors were made and the pilots were disoriented because of this. The “stall” warning was sounded in the cockpit at least 75 times.

Subsequently, the pilot took manual control after the autopilot system shut down and the wrong navigational data set off a catastrophic chain of events due to which the plane went into an “aerodynamic stall,” the nose pitched upward and the plane plunged into the ocean.

French investigators from the Bureau of Enquiry and Analysis for Civil Aviation Safety (BEA), found that the pilots had mishandled the temporary loss of data from iced-up sensors and pushed the 205-tonne jet into a freefall, without responding to alerts, at speed of around 200 kilometres per hour.

The plane was flying through a storm over South Atlantic ocean when it entered a blackspot between air traffic control towers in Brazil and Senegal. However, it kept sending automatic communication “pings” every 10 minutes. It was four minutes and 23 seconds after its last ping, and it vanished, said the report.

July 2019

In 2019, the prosecutors recommended dropping charges against Airbus and that Air France face trial for manslaughter and negligence over the crash.

The French prosecutors concluded that Air France was aware of technical problems with a key speed-measuring instrument or pilot tubes but failed to inform or train pilots on how to resolve the issue. However, this ruling was overturned two years later.

October 2022

After nearly 13 years the trial for Airbus and Air France over the crash began in Paris. The hearing opened with the judge reading out the names of all 228 victims. The chief executives of both Air France and Airbus who were present pleaded not guilty to the charges of involuntary manslaughter.

Air France claims that it was the complicated alarms that confused the pilots, whereas Airbus argues that it was the pilots’ fault. Air France has been accused of not properly training their pilots in the event of icing of the pilot probes despite knowing the risks.

On the other hand, Airbus has been accused of knowing that pilot tubes on Flight 447 were faulty and not doing enough to inform airlines and their crew about the issue which would help ensure training to mitigate the risk.

The pilot tubes

The case of the pilot tubes, on board the Airbus A330 were at the centre of the recent hearings. The instrument in question is used to measure the flight speed of aircraft. The court heard about how the malfunction with the tubes, which became blocked with ice crystals during a mid-Atlantic storm, was the reason for the alarms blaring in the cockpit and the autopilot system switching off.

April 2023

The Paris court acquitted both companies, maintaining that even though “errors” had been committed, “no certain link of causality” between those shortcomings and the accident “could be proven.”

Explained | Air France, Airbus trial over the 2009 Rio-Paris crash. Here's what happened

Queensland Ambulance Service (QAS) rushed to Hillcrest Friday morning after reports of a light plane crashing near Archerfield airport emerged. Interestingly, the woman pilot of the plane sustained only minimal injuries and was later admitted to Princess Alexandra Hospital. Emergency service officials said they were surprised to see the 30-year-old not seriously injured.

What happened to the plane?

As per QAS, the plane was forced into an emergency landing; however, it’s still unclear what caused the pilot to do so. Images of the crash site indicate the plane landed near a railway corridor, which was recently closed for maintenance. The plane was owned by AirMed Australia, a medevac service operator.

Police are investigating the clash for clarity around the incident. “Anyone in the vicinity with CCTV or dashcam footage of the incident is urged to contact Queensland police,” an official of Queensland police said. A spokesperson for AirMed Australia later stated, “AirMed has notified the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) and is assisting the Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) with its investigation.”

Where was the plane heading to?

The spokesperson for AirMed Australia said the plane was flying from Bankstown Airport to Archerfield Airport and was transporting freight. However, the plane was forced into an emergency landing just 3 kilometres away from Archerfield Airport. Data from FlightRadar24 showed the plane took off 2 hours and 14 minutes before it crashed in Hillcrest.

Nearby residents heard loud bang

The plane sustained severe damages as it was cruising at the speed of 120 kmph when it crash-landed near the railway lines. Stuart Davies, a resident of the Hillcrest area, heard a loud bang at around 6:10 AM Friday. Davies told the media, “'You could tell it was an aeroplane... it was a really loud bang, you knew it wasn't a car.”
