Brazil: 10 Dead In Plane Crash, Several People Injured

At Least 10 Killed In A Plane Crash in Brazil

An official inquiry into the plane crash that claimed the life of Malawi's vice-president, Saulos Chilima, six months ago ruled foul play. Findings released on Saturday (Dec 14) have determined that bad weather and human error caused the tragedy, putting to rest suspicions of foul play raised by Chilima's party, the United Transformation Movement (UTM).

On June 10, Chilima, 51, was en route to a funeral alongside Shanil Dzimbiri, a former first lady, when the plane went down in dense fog near Mzuzu, 370 kilometres north of Lilongwe. The military aircraft crashed in cloudy and windy conditions, killing all on board instantly.

Findings of the inquiry

Jabbar Alide, chairperson of the commission, presented the findings in a televised address. "Based on the evidence that the commission has received, it is the commission's findings that the probable cause of the accident was a combination of environmental factors and human factors," Alide said.

The report highlighted that low clouds and strong winds likely disoriented the pilots, causing them to lose visual references.

Autopsy results showed all passengers suffered "high-velocity injuries" including severe and multiple injuries to their faces, chests and limbs from "high-velocity impact against solid structures in front of them, likely the back of seats".

The Malawi Army aircraft's impact with the ground left an enormous crater and caused it to shatter on impact.

"All injuries were non-survivable," the report noted. Everyone aboard died instantly and "there is no evidence of a possibility of homicide or other causes of death, such as animal bites or any other third-party agents before and after the accident," said Alide.

The report has been submitted to President Lazarus Chakwera.

However, three others on board the flight, including the pilot, survived. Along with them, 12 people who were in the house at the time of the crash were also safely evacuated, the local authorities said.

The three people who were rescued, including one Lithuanian national, one German, and one Spanish, are currently undergoing treatment in the hospital, the Lithuanian Fire and Rescue Department told CNN.

The cargo plane took off from Leipzig, Germany, and was about to land at Vilnius Airport when it crashed a few kilometres from the runway.

Renatas Pozela, chief of the Fire and Rescue Department, said, the plane skidded on the ground for several hundred metres before hitting the house.

“One crew member was found without any signs of life,” Vilmantas Vitkauskas, head of the country’s National Crisis Management Centre said, according to public broadcaster LRT.

The police and prosecutors are investigating the incident, but they have not suggested any explosion preceding the crash.

“At the moment we don’t have any data that there was an explosion,” the spokesperson told Reuters.

During a press conference, Lithuania’s Counter-intelligence chief Darius Jauniskis said, “We cannot reject the possibility of terrorism. … But at the moment we can’t make attributions or point fingers, because we don’t have such information.”

DHL said the plane “made a forced landing about one kilometre from VNO Airport.” It confirmed four people were onboard. “The cause of the accident is still unknown, and an investigation is underway."

Meanwhile, the head of the Lithuanian Police, Arūnas Paulauskas, said the incident was “most likely due to a technical fault or a human error” but that terrorism “cannot be ruled out,” according to LRT.

Cargo plane crashes into home near Vilnius airport, bursts into flames, leaving one dead

A DHL cargo plane crashed early Monday near the airport in Lithuania's capital, killing one person, authorities said as they searched for clues to what caused the tragedy.

A DHL cargo plane crashed early Monday near the airport in Lithuania's capital, killing one person, authorities said as they searched for clues to what caused the tragedy. Lithuanian officials, who in the past weeks have been probing alleged acts of sending incendiary devices on Western-bound cargo planes, stopped short of linking the crash with that investigation. "It is premature to associate it with anything or to make any attributions," State Security Department chief Darius Jauniskis told reporters. Images from the crash site in the capital Vilnius showed debris from the plane and packages on fire scattered across the residential area cordoned off by the emergency services. "We cannot rule out the case of terrorism. We have warned that such things are possible, we see an increasingly aggressive Russia... but we cannot make any attributions or point fingers yet," Jauniskis said. According to the Lithuanian police, the plane, flying from the eastern German city of Leipzig, skidded several hundred metres, hitting the residential house which was set on fire, smaller buildings, and a car. Head of National Crisis Management Centre Vilmantas Vitkauskas said the residential building was successfully evacuated, with its 12 residents moved to safety. 'Emergency landing' German logistics company DHL said the cargo aircraft was operated by its partner SwiftAir and had made an "emergency landing" in Lithuania. "We can confirm that today, at approximately 4:30 am CET, a Swiftair aircraft, operated by a service partner on behalf of DHL, performed an emergency landing about one kilometre from VNO Airport (Vilnius, Lithuania) while en route from LEJ Airport (Leipzig, Germany) to VNO Airport," it said in a statement. Lithuanian police Chief Arunas Paulauskas said investigators had gone to the hospital to talk to the pilots. It was not immediately clear what caused the crash. Earlier this month Lithuania said it had carried out arrests as part of a criminal probe into sending incendiary devices on Western-bound planes. UK anti-terrorism police last month said they were investigating how a parcel burst into flames at a depot earlier this year, after a similar case in Germany blamed on Russia. The Lithuanian president's chief security advisor said this month that Moscow had been behind the incidents. "We know who the source of these operations is. It is Russian military intelligence," Kestutis Budrys told Ziniu radio. "We cannot let this go unanswered as it will only escalate into the new kinds of actions," Budrys added. Poland and Lithuania, both NATO members bordering Russia, are staunch allies of Ukraine, frequently warning about Russian-inspired sabotage on EU soil. The small passenger plane involved in a crash that killed 18 people in Nepal in July was carrying a load and travelling at a speed that did not match guidelines at the time of the accident, a government-led investigation team said in a preliminary report on Friday.

The aircraft owned by Nepal's Saurya Airlines crashed shortly after taking off from the capital Kathmandu on July 24, killing all 17 passengers and the co-pilot, with only the captain surviving.

The report said the airline had not complied with the "load weighing, loading and securing of load requirements" and that the plane speed given in the "operation flight plan of the event flight, as well as recorded in the FDR, were inconsistent with the Quick Reference Handbook".

"We found problems with the plane's speed and the load it was carrying. Also, proper, secure latching of load was absent," Ratish Chandra Lal Suman, chairman of the probe team, told Reuters by phone.

Brazil Plane Crash: What caused the Brazil plane crash that killed 62 people?

There has been a disturbing 400 per cent rise in 'GPS spoofing', and even more concerning is that hackers can use this malicious activity to change the clocks on airlines, which means they can 'hack time'.

What is GPS spoofing?

GPS stands for Global Positioning System, a modern satellite-based navigation system used by multiple industries across the world, including aviation and defence. According to an article in antivirus maker McAfee's website, GPS spoofing "is a malicious technique that manipulates" the GPS data, thereby misleading a GPS receiver about its actual location.

"This could potentially cause significant disruptions, as it can misdirect navigation systems, mislead delivery vehicles, or even trick smartphone apps," it noted.

GPS signals are easy to block or distort, and GPS spoofing has been used to throw missiles and drones off course.

Now, this mode of digital attack has been used against commercial airliners, which has seen a 400 per cent rise according to aviation advisory body OPSGROUP.

These attacks were carried around conflict zones too.

Recent examples of GPS spoofing

“We're starting to see reports of the clocks on board airplanes during spoofing events start to do weird things," a Reuters report quoted security expert Ken Munro as saying.

In April, Finnair temporarily paused flights to the eastern Estonian city of Tartu due to GPS spoofing. Estonia blamed Russia for the attack.

Munro said clock on board a Western airline's plane was moved forward by years in a GPS spoofing attack, "causing the plane to lose access to its digitally-encrypted communication systems."

Munro, founder of British cybersecurity company Pen Test Partners, said the plane was grounded for weeks while engineers manually reset its onboard systems, Reuters reported.

Munro, who was speaking at the Def Con cybersecurity conference in Las Vegas this past weekend, declined to identify the airline or aircraft.

“We think too much about GPS being a source of position, but it's actually a source of time,” Munro told the convention on Saturday (Aug 10).

Will GPS spoofing cause a plane crash?

While Munro said it is not going to make a plane crash, GPS spoofing can lead to a chain reaction of events that could end up being serious.

“What it does is, it just creates a little confusion. And you run the risk of starting what we call a cascade of events, where something minor happens, something else minor happens, and then something serious happens," the Reuters report quoted him as saying.

City officials at Valinhos, near Vinhedo, said a home in the local condominium complex had been damaged after the plane crashed into its backyard. None of the residents were hurt.

Some aviation experts speculated that ice had built up on the plane or it had experienced engine failure, but investigators said it was too early to determine the cause of the crash.

Speaking at an event, President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva asked for a minute of silence for the victims of the crash, adding that all on board were presumed dead.

The airline in a statement said it couldn't provide any reason for the crash.
