As he was addressing the press on Tuesday (March 10), US Secretary of War Pete Hegseth said attacks on Iran will ramp up with the heaviest strikes since Washington launched the war 10 days ago. He said, "Today will be yet again our most intense day of strikes inside Iran," Hegseth told a news conference at the Pentagon. While General Dan Caine said, “Ballistic missile attacks continue to trend downwards, 90% from where they started, and one-way attack drones have decreased 83% since the beginning of the operation.” Hegseth noted that today will be “the most intense day of strikes”, this as Iran fired its lowest number of weapons in the past 24 hours. Hegseth asserted, "It would be wise to heed the words of our president not to pursue nuclear weapons”. Taking about the war he said, “This is not endless, this is not protracted,” Hegseth says. “It’s not for me to posit whether it’s the beginning, middle or the end – that’s up to him (President Trump).”

Anthropic has filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration, claiming the government retaliated against the company after it refused to allow its Claude AI model to be used for autonomous lethal warfare and mass surveillance of Americans. US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General Dan Caine hold a press briefing in the Pentagon Briefing Room on Operation Epic Fury.

Secretary Of War: US Conducted The Most Precise Strikes on Iran

US Secretary of War, Pete Hegseth, on Monday (March) during a press briefing about the Iran military operation said that Iran was buying time to restock their missiles and strike the US forces. He said, “Iran was building powerful missile and drone to create a conventional shield for their nuclear blackmail.” Hegseth said that peaceful nuclear ambition needn't to be buried underneath. “We will finish this on America first conditions.” Pete Hegseth also said that the recent US strikes on Iran are not intended to effect “regime change,” even as he acknowledged that the Iranian leadership has shifted. “This is not a so-called regime change war, but the regime sure did change and the world is better off for it,” Hegseth said. President Donald Trump, however, has advocated for regime change. Addressing the Iranian people following the strikes, he said: “America is backing you with overwhelming strength and devastating force. Now is the time to seize control of your destiny and to unleash the prosperous and glorious future that is close within your reach.” Also Read: Israel confirms killing of Hezbollah intelligence chief, Hussein Moukalled, in Beirut strike Hegseth also emphasised that the United States did not initiate the conflict, claiming Iran has waged attacks against America for decades. “We didn’t start this war, but under President Trump, we are finishing it,” he said. The defense secretary drew a distinction between the current operation and the Iraq War, underscoring that the US will avoid prolonged nation-building efforts. “This is not Iraq,” Hegseth said from the Pentagon. “This is not endless. I was there for both. Our generation knows better, and so does this president. In a major development tied to the expanding role of artificial intelligence in defense operations, US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has reportedly issued a firm deadline to Anthropic, pressing the AI company to permit unrestricted military access to its technology. During a meeting on Tuesday (February 24) with Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, Hegseth made clear that failure to cooperate by Friday (February 27) could jeopardize the company’s standing in a key federal contract. Sources familiar with the discussion described the conversation as cordial but resolute. Amodei maintained Anthropic’s long-standing ethical boundaries, particularly objecting to the deployment of fully autonomous weapons systems and the use of AI for surveillance targeting American citizens. He has previously voiced strong reservations about handing governments unchecked control over advanced AI capabilities. Anthropic is currently the only major AI developer that has not integrated its systems into the US military’s newly established internal AI network. Defense officials have indicated that if the company refuses to participate, it could face serious consequences, including designation as a supply chain vulnerability. In more extreme circumstances, the Pentagon could invoke the Defense Production Act, granting authority to compel access to Anthropic’s technology for defense-related use. Also Read: WATCH | ‘Welcome my friend’: Laughter flows as Modi and Netanyahu notice Sara matching Indian PM's saffron flair The standoff reflects broader tensions surrounding AI’s expanding footprint in national security. Amodei has frequently warned of the risks posed by autonomous weapons, AI-directed drones, and large-scale surveillance programs, urging policymakers to establish stronger regulatory safeguards before expanding military deployment. While Anthropic initially received approval to operate within classified defense systems, other firms, such as Google, OpenAI, and xAI, have so far operated in more limited, unclassified capacities. Recently, Pentagon leadership has shown increased preference for companies willing to align fully with its evolving AI strategy. https://www.wionews.com/videos/nigeria-denies-paying-ransom-to-free-abducted-students-1772027966109/embed Last summer, the Department of Defense awarded contracts to four AI companies, each potentially valued at up to $200 million. The uncertainty surrounding Anthropic’s participation now places the company at a crossroads, balancing lucrative government partnerships against its publicly stated ethical commitments. The situation echoes earlier controversies, including backlash over Project Maven, when technology employees protested involvement in military drone and surveillance initiatives. As defense agencies accelerate AI integration, experts continue to call for clearer regulatory standards to prevent misuse—particularly in areas involving lethal force and domestic monitoring. The unfolding dispute underscores the complex intersection of technological innovation, military readiness, corporate ethics, and civil liberties, all at a time when AI is rapidly reshaping the global security landscape.

Founded by former OpenAI researchers, Anthropic has positioned itself as a proponent of responsible AI development.

Pentagon pressures Anthropic to allow unrestricted military AI use, raising concerns over ethics, surveillance, and autonomous weapons

Hegseth to China, Russia: Don't Test U.S. Military Might

On Monday (January 5), US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth announced that the Pentagon is reviewing the military retirement benefits of Democratic Senator Mark Kelly, a retired Navy captain, due to what it described as ‘seditious remarks’. Hegseth accused Kelly of being part of a group of lawmakers who released a video six weeks ago that sought to ‘undermine good order and military discipline’. Hegseth explained that as a retired officer still receiving military benefits, Kelly remains accountable to military laws and regulations. He emphasised that the military and the American public expect accountability in such matters. The controversy started when Kelly, along with other Democratic lawmakers, some of whom also have military backgrounds, released a video urging members of the armed forces and intelligence agencies not to follow illegal orders from the Trump administration. The Defense Department launched an investigation into the video in November, which is ongoing. While no action has been taken against the other lawmakers involved, the Pentagon is moving forward with proceedings to downgrade Kelly’s military retirement status. Also Read: Who is William DeFoor, the man arrested for vandalising US Vice President JD Vance’s house in Cincinnati? Hegseth revealed that a formal process, known as ‘retirement grade determination’, has been initiated. U.S.- Venezuela: Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth has cited the 'fog of war' to defend the controversial US military strike on a Venezuelan drug boat, which resulted in the deaths of several individuals. Hegseth stated that the chaotic nature of combat operations can lead to unintended consequences and that such incidents are sometimes unavoidable.

US-Venezuela Tensions: Hegseth Defends Strikes on Alleged Drug Boats

Amid intense backlash over the strikes on alleged drug-boats in the Caribbean and killing of survivors, Secretary of War Pete Hegseth said that US President Donald Trump has the power to take military action “as he sees fit.” Insisting that no international laws have been violated, Hegseth declared that boats bringing drugs to the United States will be targeted again and again. This comes even as he faced massive scrutiny over Sep 2 drug boat strike and killing of survivors.
‘We will sink you:’ What Hegseth said
Speaking at the Ronald Reagan presidential library in Simi Valley, California, Hegseth said, "If you’re working for a designated terrorist organisation and you bring drugs to this country in a boat, we will find you and we will sink you. Let there be no doubt about it." He added, “President Trump can and will take decisive military action as he sees fit to defend our nation’s interests. Let no country on earth doubt that for a moment.” Hegseth also compared US action to that of action taken after 9/11 terror attack and alleged smugglers equivalent to Al-Qaida operatives. He positioned Trump as Reagan’s "true and rightful heir" on foreign policy. “The war department will not be distracted by democracy building, interventionism, undefined wars, regime change, climate change, woke moralizing and feckless nation building,” he added. Earlier he had said that he had watched the first strike in September in real time but did not see survivors in the water or the second lethal strike. Calling the follow-up strike a "fog of war," Hegseth put the blame on one of his admiral named Frank Bradley, who ordered the strike. "Admiral Bradley made the correct decision to ultimately sink the boat and eliminate the threat...We have his back," Hegseth said. Hegseth had earlier brushed aside the reports about the second strike as “fake news.” The White House on Dec 1 confirmed that US admiral Frank Bradley was the one who authorised to conduct the second kinetic strike. Also read: US admiral ordered second strike on drug boat survivors? While Trump on Sep 2 wrote in a post on Truth Social that “strike occurred while the terrorists were at sea in International waters transporting illegal narcotics, heading to the United States,” Secretary of State Marco Rubio, while sharing report of the admiral's testimony, told that the alleged drug boat targeted was "probably headed to Trinidad or some other country in the Caribbean." Amid intense backlash over the strikes on alleged drug-boats in the Carribean and killing of survivors, Secretary of War Pete Hegseth said that he had watched the first strike in September in real time but did not see survivors in the water or the second lethal strike.
