US-Iran War: Trump Holds News Conference a Day Before Iran Ultimatum Ends

US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has urged Americans to pray ‘every day, on bended knee’ for a military victory in the Middle East ‘in the name of Jesus Christ’. However, Pope Leo XIV, the first US-born pontiff, has expressed a sharply contrasting perspective on invoking faith in times of war. During a homily at a Mass ahead of Easter, the pope said the Christian mission has often been ‘distorted by a desire for domination, entirely foreign to the way of Jesus Christ’. Since the United States and Israel launched strikes on Iran in late February, Pope Leo has repeatedly called for an end to the violence and a return to dialogue. Without directly naming Hegseth, he has also warned against using Christianity in ways that conflict with Catholic teachings. Pope Leo XIV urges peace and rejects war rhetoric in Jesus’ name, contrasting with US calls for prayer for military victory in the Middle East

Around 750 US troops have been wounded or killed in the wider regional conflict since October 2023. At least 15 troops were wounded in an attack on a Saudi air base on March 27, 2026, alone, according to two government officials who spoke with The Intercept. US casualty figures in the Iran war are being underreported. US CENTCOM has been engaged in a “casualty coverup” in Operation Epic Fury, as accused by an anonymous military source in an investigative report by The Intercept. It described the official figure as outdated or incomplete.“This is, quite obviously, a subject that Secretary of War Hegseth and the White House want to keep under major wraps,” said a defence official. The report suggests that the Trump administration's numbers lack detail and clarity, compared to those of the previous Biden administration. They would provide the chronology of attacks at the US bases and the casualties in each attack. Now the firing of the US Army Chief of Staff Gen Randy George, along with 12+ top army generals, adds more food for thought. According to reports, there was no response from CENTCOM to the repeated effort to gather an updated casualty figure and death count. The Intercept analysis suggests that at least 15 have died in the region so far since the start of the war. Capt. Is Trump administration downplaying war losses? Casualty reports face scrutiny

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has asked Army Chief of Staff Gen. Randy George to step down and immediately retire. As per reports, Hegseth wants a leader who will carry out the Army in line with President Trump and Hegseth’s vision. George, a career infantry officer and West Point graduate, previously served as senior military assistant to Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin from 2021 to 2022 during the Biden administration, after a decades‑long military career. His service includes deployments in the first Gulf War and the more recent conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan. Typically, the Army chief of staff serves a four‑year term. George was nominated by President Joe Biden and confirmed by the Senate in 2023, meaning his expected term would have lasted through 2027. The current vice chief of staff of the Army, Gen. Christopher LaNeve, who once served as Hegseth’s military aide, is likely to be considered as George’s successor. LaNeve previously served as commanding general of the Army’s 82nd Airborne Division from 2022 to 2023. Also Read: 'Pentagon Pizza Index' spike sparks buzz amid US-Iran war. On Thursday, the US Military Academy at West Point shared photos on social media of George during a visit, saying he “shared experience‑driven guidance with cadets preparing to lead.” According to his official biography on the Army’s website, George was commissioned as an infantry officer from West Point in 1988 and deployed in Operation Desert Shield, Desert Storm, Operation Iraqi Freedom, and Operation Enduring Freedom. As per reports, Pete Hegseth has asked Army Chief Gen. Randy George to immediately retire, seeking leadership aligned with Trump’s vision

Pentagon denies reports linking Pete Hegseth's broker to defence investment

Pete Hegseth has reportedly blocked the promotion of four Army officers to one-star general rank, an unusual step that has raised concerns among senior military officials about potential bias tied to race or gender. Two of the officers are Black, and two are women, selected from a list of roughly three dozen candidates, most of whom are white men. According to officials, Hegseth had pressured Army leadership, including Daniel P. Driscoll reportedly refused, citing their “decades-long records of exemplary service.” Earlier this month, Hegseth acted unilaterally to strike the four officers from the list, though questions remain about whether he has the legal authority to do so. The revised list is now under White House review before being sent to the Senate. Critics say the move undermines confidence in a promotion system intended to be merit-based and apolitical. WASHINGTON: With the Iran war entering its third week, the Trump administration is in hot water for reportedly requesting a staggering $200 billion in emergency funding. Amid concerns about the staggering bill of the Iran war, US President Donald Trump on Thursday (Mar 20) sought to downplay the costs, dismissing the bill as a "small price" to keep the US military "tippy top." The Trump aide said this when asked by a reporter about the $200bn request. ‘Tippy top’ defence vs taxpayers money? Trump shrugs off $200B Iran war bill as US burns $2B a day

US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth did not deny reports that the Pentagon is seeking more than $200 billion in additional funding from Congress for the ongoing Iran war. “I think that number could move. It takes money to kill bad guys,” Hegseth said when questioned about the request. He explained that the administration is preparing to return to Congress to secure sufficient funding for both current and future operations. “So we’re going back to Congress and our folks there to, to ensure that we’re properly funded for what’s been done, for what we may have to do in the future, ensure that our ammunition is, everything’s refilled and not just refilled, but above and beyond.” Hegseth emphasised that the proposed figure remains flexible, noting again that it “could move.” However, according to a senior administration official cited in the report, some within the White House are skeptical that a funding request exceeding $200 billion would pass Congress. Pete Hegseth on Thursday (March 19) defended $200B Iran war funding, warns on nuclear threat, and says that the US is countering Iran’s internet blackout

Hegseth says US war goals in Iran remain ‘on plan’, with 7,000 strikes, weakened defences, and vow to ‘finish this’ despite ongoing threats

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said Friday morning that Iran’s new supreme leader is “wounded and likely disfigured,” confirming reports that Mojtaba Khamenei was injured early on in the U.S. war against Iran.

Pentagon: Iran's New Leader Mojtaba Khamenei Injured, Possibly Disfigured

US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said that Iran's new supreme leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, is ‘wounded and likely disfigured’. He confirmed reports about Ali Khamenei's son being injured on the first day of the conflict.

“Iran’s leadership is in no better shape, desperate and hiding. They’ve gone underground, cowering. That’s what rats do. We know the new so-called not-so supreme leader is wounded and likely disfigured,” Hegseth told reporters.

US-Iran War: Hegseth Claims Iran Figure Linked To Trump Plot Eliminated

Pete Hegseth's team banned photographers from attending Pentagon briefings after they took some "unflattering" pictures of the Defense Secretary, according to American media reports. The Washington Post quoted sources as saying that his staff was not happy with the pictures they took of him during the hearing on March 2. It was the first briefing by Hegseth in eight months. But the photographers from news agencies like Reuters, Getty Images and the Associated Press were not allowed to attend the March 4 and March 10 briefings. It is not known which pictures they apparently objected to. Meanwhile, the Pentagon has dismissed all claims that they were not permitted in the briefings because of some pictures. Hegseth's staff says they were denied entry due to limited space. "In order to use space in the Pentagon Briefing Room effectively, we are allowing one representative per news outlet if uncredentialed, excluding pool," spokeswoman Kingsley Wilson said. He added that if it doesn't work out for some media houses, they should apply for "a Pentagon press credential." Notably, the Pentagon required all media houses to sign a new contract last year, but most of them refused due to the strict terms. However, since the Iran war broke out, arrangements have been made to allow some journalists to attend the briefings. The March 2 briefing by Hegseth and General Dan Caine was initially intended as a "Pentagon new media" affair, but to secure TV airtime, media outlets were allowed inside.
