Iga Swiatek launched the defence of her US Open crown with an emphatic opening victory on Monday as Novak Djokovic eyed a return to the top of the men's world rankings on his long-awaited return to the tournament.

Swiatek, bidding to become the first woman to successfully defend the US Open title since Serena Williams won a hat-trick of titles from 2012-2014, needed less than an hour to defeat Sweden's Rebecca Peterson 6-0, 6-1.

The 22-year-old world number one from Poland overwhelmed her opponent with five breaks of serve and 20 winners to complete victory in just 58 minutes on the Arthur Ashe Stadium.

"I wanted to start the tournament with everything I was focusing on. I was happy to play a great game, with all the pressure and expectations I was happy on the court," said Swiatek after her win.

Swiatek, targeting her fifth Grand Slam title, will face Daria Saville of Australia in round two.

While Swiatek advanced safely, there was no such luck for Greece's eighth seed Maria Sakkari, who became the highest ranked casualty of early round action, beaten 6-4, 6-4 by Spain's Rebeka Masarova, ranked 71st in the world.

Eighteenth seed Victoria Azarenka of Belarus was among the first women to book their place in the second round, swatting aside French wild card entrant Fiona Ferro 6-1, 6-2 in early play on Monday.

Tenth seed Karolina Muchova of the Czech Republic also made it safely through, blowing away Australia's Storm Hunter 6-4, 6-0 in 1hr 5mins.

Novak Djokovic says he is treating every Grand Slam tournament like it's his last as he prepares to make a long-awaited return to the US Open next week. The Serbian star, winner of a record 23 Grand Slam singles titles, is bidding to add a 24th to his collection in New York over the next fortnight, which would put him two clear of Rafael Nadal's 22 Slam titles.

At 36, Djokovic said on Friday he is increasingly aware that opportunities to improve his record may become harder to come by even if he is not contemplating retirement.

"I don't know how many more slams I'll have," Djokovic told a press conference. "I'll still keep going. I don't have an end in my mind at the moment."

"I also understand that things are different when you're 36, so I have to be more appreciative, a bit more, I guess, present, treating every Grand Slam as maybe your last one in terms of commitment and performance."

"I see this every Grand Slam that I play right now as really a golden opportunity to make more history."

Djokovic has not played at the US Open since 2021, when his bid to complete a rare calendar year Grand Slam of all four tennis majors was foiled by Daniil Medvedev in an agonizing defeat in the final.

Djokovic was subsequently barred from entry to the United States over his refusal to get vaccinated -- putting him at odds with US government's Covid-19 travel rules -- meaning he missed last year's US Open.

Djokovic, who opens his campaign on the Arthur Ashe main arena against France's Alexandre Muller on Monday, says he is relishing his return to what he described as the most "electric" atmosphere in tennis.

"I think it's also in a way disrespectful to your next opponent if you're already thinking about your finals matchup," Djokovic said. "Even though I've had tremendous success ... that kind of mindset never really resonated with me.

The US Open 2023 will make use of the Video Review System (VRS) to assist the chair umpire in the upcoming slam. The last Grand Slam of the year, set to kick start on Monday, August 28 will see the use of technology to help the chair umpire in decision making. The technology gained positive feedback during multiple ATP events and will now make its debut in the Grand Slam.

"The VR official and VR operator will then send the video to a screen on the chair umpire's chair as well as stadium screens when available," the document read as quoted by Reuters.

Over the last few years, Grand Slam tournaments in particular have been using the line-assisting hawk-eye technology to track the ball direction. The technology was used to judge whether the ball had landed in or out of the playing dimension. However, the new technology will now help track the double bounces and foul shots, amongst others.

The system like the hawk-eye technology will make use of multiple camera angles to track the flight of the ball. This will help the chair umpire analyze the situation and come to the right conclusion. In case the technology does not provide clear output, the original decision will be retained.

However, the VRS will be in use on limited courts as not all the outer courts are equipped with technologically advanced facilities. The VRS will operate at Arthur Ashe Stadium, Louis Armstrong Stadium, Grandstand, Court 17, and Court 5.

The VRS has been used extensively during the men’s tournaments on ATP tours but is yet to stamp its authority on the women’s WTA tour. The WTA has refrained from using the VRS and is likely not to change its stand after the conclusion of the US Open.

The technology gained positive feedback during multiple ATP events and will now make its debut in the Grand Slam. VRS at US Open "The VR official and VR operator will then send the video to a screen on the chair umpire's chair as well as stadium screens when available," the document read as quoted by Reuters. Over the last few years, Grand Slam tournaments in particular have been using the line-assisting hawk-eye technology to track the ball direction. The technology was used to judge whether the ball had landed in or out of the playing dimension. However, the new technology will now help track the double bounces and foul shots, amongst others. The system like the hawk-eye technology will make use of multiple camera angles to track the flight of the ball. This will help the chair umpire analyze the situation and come to the right conclusion. In case the technology does not provide clear output, the original decision will be retained. However, the VRS will be in use on limited courts as not all the outer courts are equipped with technologically advanced facilities. The VRS will operate at Arthur Ashe Stadium, Louis Armstrong Stadium, Grandstand, Court 17, and Court 5. The VRS has been used extensively during the men’s tournaments on ATP tours but is yet to stamp its authority on the women’s WTA tour. The WTA has refrained from using the VRS and is likely not to change its stand after the conclusion of the US Open. Novak Djokovic needed five match points and nearly&nbsp;four hours to pull off a gritty victory over Carlos Alcaraz and claim a third ATP Cincinnati Open title on Sunday.

A titanic struggle between the world's top two players saw Djokovic -- who looked out on his feet in the second set -- save a match point before coming through on his own fifth match point for a 5-7, 7-6 (9/7), 7-6 (7/4) triumph.

"It's crazy, I don't know what I can say," said 23-time Grand Slam champion Djokovic, who was&nbsp;seen by the doctors early in the second set for heat illness in a battle that lasted three hours and 44 minutes.

"It's tough to describe. It was the toughest I've ever played in my life.

"From start to finish we both&nbsp;went through highs, lows, incredible points, bad games, heatstroke, comebacks.

"Overall this was the toughest and most exciting match I've ever&nbsp;been a part of.

"It's matches like these that I continue to work for."

It was another epic chapter to the budding rivalry between 20-year-old top-ranked Alcaraz and the 36-year-old Serb star, who avenged his loss to the Spaniard in a five-set Wimbledon final last month.

The two -- who have traded the number one ranking six times this year -- are&nbsp;now level on two wins apiece in their head-to-head rivalry.

"I&nbsp;feel proud of&nbsp;myself, honestly. I don't know why I was&nbsp;crying because I fight until the last ball," Alcaraz said.

"I almost beat one&nbsp;of the greatest of all time in our sport. I left&nbsp;the court really&nbsp;happy with what I did."

The 20-year-old unleashed everything he had at Djokovic and found it wasn't enough.

"It was&nbsp;really, really&nbsp;difficult playing. Novak returns five, six, seven balls on every point," Alcaraz said.

"So fighting and&nbsp;running from one corner to the&nbsp;other one on every point is really tough to deal with for&nbsp;almost the whole match.

"I left everything on court.&nbsp;I'm working very well. But today, it was tough to deal&nbsp;with everything that Novak had."

Djokovic, who earned a record-extending 39th victory at the elite Masters 1000 level, secured the first break of the opening set at love for a 4-2 lead.

Alcaraz broke back and broke again for a 6-5 lead then held to take the set before Djokovic left the court for a seven-minute change of clothes.

Djokovic, clearly affected by the hot, muggy conditions, was visited by the trainer and doctor in the second set.

He was broken to trail 2-1, Alcaraz grabbing a 4-2 edge with a drop shot that Djokovic couldn't touch.

But the 23-time Grand Slam winner broke Alcaraz to pull level 4-4 on the way to a tie-breaker.

Djokovic saved a match point at 5-6 and forced a third set when Alcaraz dumped a shot into the net on Djokovic's second set point.

Djokovic headed off to the locker room for another clothing change while Alcaraz pounded his right hand on his bench in frustration as he sat down.

The Spaniard -- who then needed to have a finger taped up -- was broken in a nine-minute seventh game that featured five break points.

The back-and-forth battle continued, Djokovic unable to convert serving for the match at 5-4 but putting it away two games later after the longest best-of-three set final in ATP Tour history.

A weary Djokovic dropped to the court in relief, then bounced up and ripped his shirt down the middle as he let out a roar of triumph or agony -- or perhaps a bit of both.

"I was never in doubt that I could deliver the match when it mattered the most," he said, adding that the rivalry with Alcaraz "is just getting better and better."

"Carlos is an amazing player, I have tons of respect for him," Djokovic said. "He is so poised at such a young age."

Alcaraz will remain number one in the world and will be the top seed while defending his title at the US Open, which starts on August 28.

Djokovic, who declined to be vaccinated against Covid-19, was playing his first US tournament in two years.

Carlos Alcaraz saved a match point on the way to a three-set victory over Hubert Hurkacz on Saturday as he lined up title clash with Novak Djokovic at the ATP Cincinnati Masters. World number one Alcaraz held on for a 2-6, 7-6 (7/4), 6-3 victory over Hurkacz, rallying to beat the big-serving Pole for the second time in as many weeks.

World number two Djokovic beat Germany's Alexander Zverev 7-6 (7/5), 7-5 to reach the final, which will be a repeat of last month's epic Wimbledon final won by Alcaraz.

Alcaraz has won two of three career meetings with Djokovic, but the Serb was looking forward to their first hard court clash.

"It's the ultimate challenge at the moment for me," Djokovic said, noting he'd beaten Alcaraz on clay at the US Open this year before falling in five sets on grass at Wimbledon.

"Now it's going to be the first encounter on a hard court. It's a very good test prior to the US Open," Djokovic said. "Obviously different conditions.

"It's still facing the top player of the world now who is in form. It's the biggest challenge I could get, so I'm looking forward to it."

Djokovic was trying for a second time to serve out the match against Zverev when he was distracted by a nearby amusement park's fireworks display, but managed to regain his focus and finish it off.

He'd dropped his serve two games earlier, only to come back with a break of his own.

"I played a very poor game, but I bounced back and sealed the deal in the 12th game of the second set," Djokovic said. "I could have done some things better, but I'm pretty happy about winning in straight sets."

Alcaraz's victory, after two hours and 18 minutes over Hurkacz, ensures the 20-year-old will remain atop the world rankings heading into the US Open, which starts a week from Monday. He notched his 53rd match win of the season against five defeats, but it was another hard slog for the Spaniard.

"It's been a really tough tournament for me, all my matches going three sets," Alcaraz said. "But I'm happy to win these kind of matches by staying strong mentally.

"I've grown up a lot with these experiences. It's great to be in the final," he added.

After dropping the first set, Alcaraz was on the brink in the 10th game of the second, but Hurkacz fired wide on a match point and they went to a tiebreaker.

Djokovic will next take on American Taylor Fritz, who advanced after Dusan Lajovic retired with a toe injury trailing 5-0.

Djokovic broke once to claim the first set and quickly ran up a 5-0 lead in the second. He faltered while trying to serve it out, dropping his serve only to complete the contest two games later.

"Gael is one of the most athletic guys on the tour and he showed that in the first set," Djokovic said. "Every ball comes back from him. "I served well and made him play. After the first break I didn't look back and raised my level.

"I had an almost flawless second set," added Djokovic. "Hopefully I can keep it going."

<h2>Alcaraz storms past Tommy Paul</h2>

Things weren't quite so easy for Alcaraz against a player who had stunned him in the quarter-finals at Toronto last week.

Alcaraz had squandered three match points against Paul before the first of a string of rain delays that forced players off and on the court in a logistics ballet that finally ended after more than three hours.

The Spaniard held on to book a quarter-final meeting with Australian Max Purcell, a 6-4, 6-2 winner over Swiss Stan Wawrinka.

After the final rain pause, Alcaraz, up a break in the third, came out and finished off the final few points, advancing with 40 winners and 61 unforced errors.

"I really wanted to win after what happened against him last week," admitted Alcaraz, who reached his fifth Masters 1000 quarter-final this season.

Alcaraz brought out the best of his big game to tame Paul in a contest first interrupted at 4-3 in the deciding set by the weather. The top seed came back from a break down four times in the first two sets, but he couldn't put it away when he had three opportunities in the 12th game of the second set.

After the 15-minute game, Paul dominated the tiebreaker.

Alcaraz was up a break and serving at 4-3 in the third when rain stopped play for just over an hour.

Then came a stop-start scenario that saw the court dried and players warmed up only for rain to start again.

"All of the starting and stopping was not easy," Alcaraz said. "I handled the waiting well."

There was disappointment however, for third-seeded Daniil Medvedev and fourth-seeded Stefanos Tsitsipas.

Alexander Zverev beat Medvedev 6-4, 5-7, 6-4 in a battle of former champions while Poland's Hubert Hurkacz beat Tsitsipas 6-3, 6-4.

Novak Djokovic made a winning return in his first appearance on U.S. soil for two years on Wednesday, reaching the third round of the ATP/WTA Cincinnati Open when Alejandro Davidovich Fokina retired hurt.

The world number two Serb advanced after winning the first set 6-4, when his Spanish opponent could not go on with a lower back injury.

"He told me it started yesterday," the 23-time Grand Slam singles champion said. "Hopefully he will be ready for New York (US Open).

"This is never the way you want to win, the crowd was expecting a match, a battle," the 36-year-old added.

"I have mixed emotions with how the match ended. I'm hoping to build form and progress through the tournament by raising my level."

Djokovic is playing in the United States for the first time since 2021.&nbsp;

He was barred from entering the country during the latter stages of the COVID-19 pandemic after refusing to get vaccinated.

Djokovic's next opponent on Thursday will be Gael Monfils, who continued his run of comeback form by defeating Australian Alex de Minaur 7-5, 6-4 to reach a third round for the second consecutive week.

The 36-year-old Frenchman excelled as he beat the weekend finalist in Toronto in two hours with 29 winners to 14 for de Minaur.

"It will be a battle of the veterans," Djokovic said of the over-35 clash.&nbsp;

"Gael is an amazing guy, i truly respect and like him - he brings so much joy to fans.

Top American Pegula relied on an angry racquet smash to reset her game after losing the opening set to Martina Trevisan of Italy.&nbsp;

The third seed, who won the Montreal title at the weekend, reversed her fortunes for a 6-7 (2/7), 6-2, 6-3 win to reach the third round.&nbsp;

"Sorry to my racquet," she said. "I was not so positive today, but the crowd really helped me out.&nbsp;

"It was a super-quick turnaround for me from Canada. Conditions here are very different and that's always going to be trouble. The ball really flies."&nbsp;

World number two Novak Djokovic has withdrawn from the ATP Toronto Masters due to fatigue, Tennis Canada said on Sunday.

The announcement comes a week after the 23-time Grand Slam champion from Serbia fell to Spain's Carlos Alcaraz in the final at Wimbledon.

His withdrawal deprives the US Open tune-up tournament that starts on August 7 of a four-time champion.

"I have always enjoyed my time in Canada, but after speaking with my team, we believe this is the right decision to take," Djokovic said in a statement released by Tennis Canada.

"I would like to thank Karl Hale, the Tournament Director, for understanding this decision. I really hope I can return to Canada and Toronto in the coming years to play in front of great fans there."

Alcaraz denied Djokovic a record-equalling eighth Wimbledon title last week, handing him his first defeat on the All England Club's Centre Court in 10 years.

The Spaniard's victory also ended 36-year-old Djokovic's chance of a calendar Grand Slam after his triumphs at the Australian Open and French Open took his tally of major titles to a men's record 23.

Wimbledon quarter-finalist Christopher Eubanks will now gain automatic entry into the Toronto main draw.

The American defeated fifth-seeded Stefanos Tsitsipas and 12th-seeded Cameron Norrie en route to the last eight at Wimbledon.

Hale acknowledged that Djokovic, who won the Canadian title in 2007, 2011, 2012 and 2016, would be missed.

"Of course, we're disappointed that Novak won't be playing at the National Bank Open this year," Hale said in a statement. "He's an incredible player and one we know our fans were eager to watch at Sobeys Stadium.

"He will be missed but we still have a long list of sensational players confirmed for this year’s event, including 41 of the top 42 players in the world."

The Serbian was a favourite to lift the title, which would have been his 24th&nbsp;Grand Slam title and eighth Wimbledon trophy.&nbsp;But the Spaniard was the better player in the summit clash, winning 1-6, 7-6 (8-6), 6-1, 3-6, 6-4 to lift his second major title and maiden championship at the All England Club on a packed Centre Court.

While Djokovic missed a golden opportunity to extend his Grand Slam tally, he was visibly upset when the going got tough in the marquee finale. Emotions were flying high and Djokovic even lost his cool as he smashed his racquet at the Centre Court net post. Wimbledon has now levied a hefty fine on him for&nbsp;damaging a property with his racquet.&nbsp;

After Djokovic was broken early to give his opponent the much-needed confidence to wrap up the contest, the Serbian went back towards his bench and vented out his frustration on the racquet. He smashed it on the&nbsp;Centre Court net-post, leaving a dent mark. As a result, he was immediately given a code violation warning by the chair umpire. Earlier, he had also been&nbsp;warned for time violation.

A day after the summit clash, second-ranked Djokovic was handed a fine of $8,000 (£6,117). It will be cut from his runner-up cheque which accounts for a whopping £1.175 million ($1.53mn).

The first one was the time violation, so yeah. Not a great moment again, but you just kind of have to accept it."

The Serbian also reflected on his defeat to 20-year-old Alcaraz. He said, "I've won many close matches here down the years, maybe I should have lost a couple of finals that I won so it's even Stevens," said Djokovic. "It's a tough one to swallow when you are so close. I lost to the better player and I have to congratulate him and move on."

Alcaraz, who didn't look like dropping his shoulders any time during the match, brought it down to 6-6, only for him to produce a magical effort to outclass Novak and beat him in the tie-breaker - which clearly hasn't been done in Wimbledon 2023.

It was the beginning of something special.

Upbeat Alcaraz tired the veteran, and by the time the fifth game of the third set arrived, the world didn't know how to react as it lasted for 26 minutes and involved 13 deuces.

Much to everyone's surprise, Alcaraz came on top and took the 4-1 lead. It was about time before he made light work of Novak's craft and beat him convincingly 6-1 to take a 2-1 lead in the clash of Titans at the Centre Court.

Just when it looked like Alcaraz was on a winning spree in this match, Djokovic returned at the right time and won the fourth set with relative ease. 
The match, just like how it meant to be, reached the fifth and final set.&nbsp;

Alcaraz made the most of his young legs and kept himself in the game by covering each inch of the ground in the final set. Some of his forehand shots were outstanding, and so was his grit and hunger to stand tall against perhaps the greatest ever.

His biggest moment was perhaps serving for the Championship as he held his nerves and won his maiden Wimbledon title.

Wimbledon 2023 final saw Novak Djokovic losing in five sets, a rare sight for tennis fans. 20-year-old Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz beat the defending champion 1-6, 7(8)-6(6), 6-1, 3-6, 6-4 to win his maiden All England title and probably mark the start of a new era in world of tennis.

Speaking at the presentation ceremony after getting the runner-up trophy, Djokovic admitted that Alcaraz deserved to win the title with the quality of game he showed, when asked to reflect on the loss.

"Good afternoon, everyone. Not so good for me (laughs) but for Carlos. I have to start with praises to Carlos and his team. Amazing show. You showed great skills when you had to serve out, amazing. You deserved to win (not verbatim)," said Djokovic.

Djokovic went on to call his loss as 'Even Steven', saying that he's won some matches he shouldn't have.

"As for me, you never like to lose matches like these. When the emotions settle down, I'd have to be still grateful because I've been blessed with many close matches in my career, including against Roger (Federer) in 2019. May be I should have lost couple of close matches so this even Steven (not verbatim)," said Novak.

Djokovic, notably, has already won two grand slams this year - Australia Open and French Open.&nbsp;

"I'll be tomorrow morning, not so much today," he said when asked if he's proud to be in the third grand slam final of the year. "Tough one to swallow when you are so close, but again these are the moments we work for every day - to be able to play at biggest stages in the most important tournaments. I have been blessed with so many important matches in my career, this is just another one in the history for me. I lost to a better player and have to congratulate him and move on."

Djokovic's family, his wife and his son, were in attendance and the star got emotional while acknowledging their support.

Coming into the contest both Alcaraz and Medvedev were expected to give a tough fight to each other, however, the contest turned out to be a one-sided affair. The 20-year-old Spaniard broke Medvedev on six occasions in the contest while also playing the backhand with perfection. There were 19 unforced errors by the 2021 US Open champion and only had 59 percent of his first serves in as Alcaraz exploited his opponent’s weakness.

This is Alcaraz’s second Grand Slam final having reached the final of the US Open where he emerged victorious by beating Casper Ruud in the final. He could become the first Spanish player to win Wimbledon since Rafael Nadal in 2010. On the hand, with Medvedev’s exit, there will be no repeat of the 2021 US Open final where Djokovic was beaten in the final.

Djokovic has only dropped two sets on his way to the final and will look to join Margaret Court for most singles Grand Slam titles won.

The defending champion has not lost at the Championships since 2017 and booked his ninth final in London. Novak Djokovic likes nothing better than munching on Wimbledon's Centre Court turf on men's final day and after setting up what he billed as the "ultimate showdown" with Carlos Alcaraz, he now wants to gobble up a record-equalling 24th Grand Slam title.

"He's very motivated. He's young. He's hungry. I'm hungry, too, so let's have a feast," joked the Serbian who has bent down to eat a handful of grass from the most famous tennis arena after each one of his seven Wimbledon triumphs.

For the first time in his career, Djokovic stands alone on top of the men's Grand Slam totem pole after he won the French Open last month to secure a 23rd major -- moving ahead of his great rival Rafael Nadal on the all-time winners' list. But that achievement has only fuelled the 36-year-old's burning desire.

Considering he honed his skills in a drained swimming pool converted into a makeshift tennis court while NATO was bombing Belgrade in 1999, it is not difficult to understand why winning the biggest prizes in tennis means so much to him.

"Maybe some people think that it would be a huge relief for me winning Roland Garros, being the only men's tennis player with 23 slams. Even though Alcaraz recently dethroned him from the top of the world rankings, Djokovic is still considered the man to beat and still has the power to turn opponents into nervous wrecks as the 20-year-old Spaniard discovered during their Roland Garros semi-final.

Alcaraz admitted that the stress and tension of facing Djokovic brought on the debilitating cramps that ruined his chances of winning that showdown just five weeks ago.

<h2>Novak in ninth Wimbledon final</h2>

The defending champion has not lost at the Championships since 2017 and booked his ninth final in London. He has enjoyed a stellar run at the tournament, having last lost at the Center Court in the 2013 final against Andy Murray. Sinner was no closer to Djokovic and his experience in the tournament after he was caught a flight in front of the 23-time Grand Slam champion.

In the entire match, Sinner was not able to break Djokovic’s serve despite having set points in the third set. Having won the first two sets with relative ease, things were a little different in the third set where Novak once again showcased his quality by winning his sixth tiebreaker of the Wimbledon championships. He is yet to lose a tiebreaker in the tournament and has dropped only two sets on his way to the final.

As things stand, the 36-year-old will play the winner of Alcaraz and Medvedev who will meet in the second semifinal later in the day. Djokovic will have bad memories of Medvedev having lost to him in the 2021 US Open final while he beat Alcaraz in the French Open before he got the better of Casper Ruud last month.

A win in Sunday’s final will also see Djokovic become the joint-most successful player in the history of the game. The Serb will join Margaret Court with 24 singles titles and will surface Serena Williams in the all-time tally. It will be his 35th major final, the most by any player in the history of the game.

Novak Djokovic showed again why he remains invincible at Wimbledon, young rival Carlos Alcaraz graced Centre Court for the first time and Andy Murray's hopes ended in Greek tragedy on another marathon day at the grasscourt slam on Friday.

Serbia's Djokovic, chasing records on multiple fronts, left it late to book his place in round four, beating Stan Wawrinka 6-3 6-1 7-6(5) just before Wimbledon's 11pm curfew.

Spain's world number Alcaraz is a round behind because of this week's rain but picked up speed with a 6-4 7-6(2) 6-3 victory against Frenchman Alexandre Muller.

Women's top seed Iga Swiatek continued her serene progress with a third successive straight sets win -- this time against Croatia's Petra Martic 6-2 7-5.

Second seed Aryna Sabalenka suffered a scare though before hitting back to beat Varvara Gracheva of France 2-6 7-5 6-2.

For British fans, at least, day five fell flat with Murray unable to finish off fifth seed Stefanos Tsitsipas.

The 36-year-old had led two-sets-to-one after Thursday's late night action and there was a wave of Pimms-fuelled optimism that he could finish the job on Saturday.

Tsitsipas had other ideas though and silenced the partisan Centre Court crowd to prevail 7-6(3) 6-7(2) 4-6 7-6(3) 6-4 on the 10th anniversary of Murray's first Wimbledon crown.

<h2>Murray disappointed&nbsp;</h2>

"I'm obviously very disappointed just now," the Scot told reporters as he processed the loss.

"Yeah, obviously you never know how many opportunities you're going to get to play here. The defeats maybe feel a bit tougher. But, to be honest, every year that Wimbledon's not gone how I would like, it's been hard."

Britain's only singles survivor is Katie Boulter who faces women's champion Elena Rybakina on Saturday.

Broady at least had the honour of being Britain's best-performing male player this year, although he did not take too much comfort from that fact.

"Kind of makes it worse that we've all lost on the same day, as well. Probably would have felt a bit better if we'd staggered what days we lost on, whereas now it's a bit of a Debbie Downer, isn't it?" he told reporters."

Alcaraz mixed power hitting, fearsome returning and delicate drop shots to beat Muller, declaring afterwards that he belonged on the "really beautiful court" and hoped to play Djokovic in the final on Sunday week.

"I feel like I'm ready to play more matches, to play more great matches on that court," U.S. Open champion Alcaraz said after reaching the third round where he will play Chile's Nicolas Jarry on Saturday.

"It would be amazing to play a final here in Wimbledon. Even better if is against Novak obviously."

A hectic day in the women's draw ended with a shock under the Court One roof as fifth seed Caroline Garcia was outlasted by 32nd seed Marie Bouzkova 7-6(0) 4-6 7-5.

Earlier Lesia Tsurenko win a dramatic match against Ana Bogdan after saving five match points and winning a 38-point tiebreak, the longest in women's singles Grand Slam history.

The Ukrainian and her fellow unseeded opponent from Romania split the opening two sets but an incredible battle unfolded at 6-6 as Tsurenko dug deep to win the breaker 20-8.

Tunisian Ons Jabeur made quick work of Chinese qualifier Bai Zhuoxuan with a 6-1 6-1 win in 45 minutes while twice former champion Petra Kvitova cruised into the third round after the ninth seed beat Belarusian Aliaksandra Sasnovich 6-2 6-2.

She was joined by Ukraine's Marta Kostyuk whose Spanish opponent Paula Badosa retired with a back injury. Badosa, the 25-year-old girlfriend of Tsitsipas, also pulled out of the mixed doubles in which she was scheduled to play alongside him.

Last year's quarter-finalist Jannik Sinner of Italy, seeded eighth, recovered from a poor start to beat Frenchman Quentin Halys 3-6 6-2 6-3 6-4, while Russian third seed Daniil Medvedev downed Adrian Mannarino 6-3 6-3 7-6(5).

Wimbledon: Djokovic wins in nick of time, Alcaraz shines, all Brits out from men's singles

Stan Wawrinka rolled back the years as the 38-year-old Swiss proved the old adage that class is permanent and form temporary by knocking out seeded Argentine Tomas Etcheverry on Thursday to reach the third round at Wimbledon. His career may be in its twilight but Wawrinka proved a notch above a man 15 years his junior to claim a 6-3 4-6 6-4 6-2 victory on a sunny Court Three.

It was the first time Wawrinka has reached the third round of a Grand Slam in three years and his reward is a box-office duel with defending champion Novak Djokovic, the man he famously made cry after beating him in the 2015 French Open final.

The 88th-ranked Wawrinka, who has extended his career despite issues with his knees, had lost in the first or second round of his last six Grand Slam tournaments.

"It's a long time that I didn't win too much at Grand Slams," Wawrinka, who once turned the so-called big four into a big five by winning the 2014 Australian Open, the French Open a year later and the 2016 U.S. Open, said on court after an impressive display against the 29th seed. "I've been working hard to get back to a better level and I'm happy with the way I'm coming up."

<h2>Hunting ground</h2>

Wimbledon has never been Wawrinka's happiest hunting ground with only two quarter-finals runs and he has made the third round for the first time since 2015.

Djokovic, bidding for a fifth consecutive Wimbledon title and a joint-record eighth in total, leads their career head-to-head 20-6, but they have never met on grass.

"I'll enjoy it if I don't get killed," Wawrinka said of his impending showdown with the Serb who has lost only twice at Wimbledon since 2013 -- one of which was due to an injury withdrawal.

"I'm happy to have the chance to play against him on grass at least one time. It's a big challenge but hopefully I can come to a higher level and be competitive."

"I'll push to the maximum and see what happens."

For Wawrinka to stand any chance of stopping Djokovic's march to a 24th Grand Slam title, he will need all the tools in his considerable toolbox, especially his signature backhand.

That stroke, the subject of endless internet montages, softened up Djokovic in the 2015 Roland Garros showdown and in the 2016 U.S. Open final when he produced three sets of almost unplayable brilliance.

It was also in fine fettle on Thursday, as was his hammer-like forehand, although it was experience that really paid off as he moved Etcheverry around the court.

Only in the second set did Wawrinka briefly wobble, but after breaking serve at 3-3 in the third he seized the match.

With no Rafael Nadal, Djokovic is expected to go the distance but will be challenged by the likes of Carlos Alcaraz, Andy Murray, Stefanos Tsitsipas, Dominic Thiem, Daniil Medvedev, etc.

'Blow, we need your help': Novak Djokovic jokingly requests fans to dry damp Wimbledon court - Watch

Nick Kyrgios withdrew from Wimbledon on Sunday with a wrist injury, stripping the tournament of one its headline acts 12 months after the firebrand Australian finished runner-up to Novak Djokovic.

"I'm really sad to say that I have to withdraw from Wimbledon this year," the 28-year-old wrote on Instagram, explaining that he had hurt his wrist as he prepared in vain to play in Mallorca last week.

Kyrgios had been an injury doubt in the build-up to Wimbledon.

However, that was because he was struggling to recover from knee surgery which has restricted him to just one match in 2023.

"I tried my hardest to be ready after my surgery and to be able to step on the Wimbledon courts again. During my comeback, I experienced some pain in my wrist during Mallorca," he added.

"As a precaution, I had it scanned and it came back showing a torn ligament in my wrist.&nbsp;

"I tried everything to be able to play and I am disappointed to say that I just didn't have enough time to manage it before Wimbledon.

"I'll be back, and as always, I appreciate the support from all my fans."

Kyrgios had been due to face wild card David Goffin in the first round at the All England Club on Monday.

His place in the draw will be taken by a lucky loser from qualifying.

Earlier Sunday, Kyrgios, whose lone match in 2023 came in Stuttgart last month, said that his battle to regain full fitness had been "brutal".

<h2>Dreading coming back</h2>

However, he added: "I didn't miss the sport. I was almost dreading coming back a little bit, but it's my job."

He also admitted there remained "question marks" over his ability to play best-of-five sets after such a lengthy absence.

"I feel like to the outside world, people don't understand. Just because it's not contact, it's not that physical.&nbsp;

"I dare someone to go out there and play four hours with Novak and see how you feel afterwards."

At Wimbledon in 2022, the Australian dominated most of the headlines.

His high-octane, flamboyant shot-making was accompanied by signature clashes with rivals and officialdom.

He was fined $10,000 for spitting and $4,000 for shouting obscenities -- one of which sent the British tabloids into meltdown as it was within earshot of eight-year-old Prince George.

Kyrgios also fought out an explosive third round clash with Stefanos Tsitsipas with the Greek even describing him as "evil" and a "bully".

In the final against Djokovic, he demanded a woman be ejected from the crowd for consuming "700 drinks, bro".

"In a way it was good to be home. Obviously heartbreaking as well," said Kyrgios as he reflected on his time out of the sport.

"Last year I felt like everything kind of came together for me. Finals of Wimbledon. Barely lost a match. Had the third best season on tour.&nbsp;

"Obviously my body was just crying out for some sort of rest."

For Kyrgios, being away from the tennis courts didn't mean an absence from the public view.

In May, his car was stolen from his mother at gunpoint outside the family home in Canberra.

Before that incident, Kyrgios pleaded guilty in February to assaulting a former girlfriend.&nbsp;

He avoided a conviction for what the magistrate called a "single act of stupidity".&nbsp;

"It took me seven, eight years to be able to just open up about that," he explained on Sunday.

"I feel great now. It's hard because I'm putting so much expectation on myself. Compared to that time, I'm feeling a lot better."

"I tried my hardest to be ready after my surgery and to be able to step on the Wimbledon courts again. During my comeback, I experienced some pain in my wrist during Mallorca," he added. "As a precaution, I had it scanned and it came back showing a torn ligament in my wrist. "I tried everything to be able to play and I am disappointed to say that I just didn't have enough time to manage it before Wimbledon.
