After the victory, Djokovic did his customary celebration of soaking in the applause with both his hands up in the air whilst pointing towards the heavens. Thereafter, Djokovic went towards his team box and let out a huge 'Come on' roar before climbing the steps and jumping into the enclosure. The emotional Serb embraced his coaches, brother and mother, before bursting into tears and lying on his back in the cramped box. During the presentation ceremony, Djokovic said it was the 'biggest' win of his career under the circumstances. "I have to say that this has been one of the most challenging tournaments I have ever played in my life. Novak Djokovic won his tenth Australian Open title - his 22nd Grand Slam crown overall - on Sunday by beating Stefanos Tsitsipas in straight sets (6-3, 7-6, 7-6) in the final at the Rod Laver arena in Melbourne. Heading into the match with a 10-2 head-to-head record, Novak was the favourite to walk out as the winner, and not to everyone's surprise, he did the same.

The Serbian was on top of his game against the 24-year-old, who surprised everyone, including Novak with his beautiful backhand shots throughout the match. However, with this win, Novak has maintained his unbeaten winning streak in AO finals.

The third set, that also turned out to be the last, had its share of drama as Tsitsipas tried pulling the match in his favour but couldn't as the Serbian force in Djokovic wasn't ready to let go of his chance of making a statement in the tournament - where got banned from participating last year due to vaccine issues.

With superb back-and-forth during the match, it again reached the tie-breaker where Novak took a 5-0 lead in no time. Though the Greek player scored some points for himself, he eventually fell short as the now 22-time Grand Slam winner won the tiebreaker by 7-5.

Novak Djokovic wins his 10th Australian Open title, beats Stefanos Tsitsipas in straight sets

Amid all the controversy surrounding Novak Djokovic and his father, veteran tennis star Boris Becker remains super excited for the men’s summit clash at the Australian Open between the Serbian Djokovic and Tsitsipas, slated to take place at the Rod Laver arena in Melbourne on Sunday, January 29th. Novak, who is chasing his record tenth Australian Open crown that will help me go equal with Rafael Nadal’s tally of 22 Grand Slam titles, will have everyone’s eyes on him. Being an admirer of Novak, Becker said people should feel lucky about watching him play as there is a chance that a player like him may never come again.

"I don't know if a tennis player can achieve something like that again,” said Becker.

The former six-time Grand Slam winner Becker opined that while it might look normal for many to see a player like Novak achieve so much every now and then, it surely isn’t.

"We are watching tennis history live here. We all take it for granted: The Djoker, he will do it. No, guys, that's not normal,” Becker added while speaking with Eurosport.

Taking a note of Djokovic’s reflexes given his age, Becker said he has seen Novak grasping for breath during the matches. Adding it is important for everyone to enjoy watching him play as no one knows by when we will he hang his boots.

"Novak is getting older, too. He is now 35 years old. You could also notice on the court that he was catching his breath a bit more than usual. Let us enjoy it while we can see it because at some point it will be over,” said Becker.

As Tsitsipas had earlier called this match as culmination of the fulfilment of his childhood dream, taking on the world number one in a Grand Slam final would be a winner for tennis too, feels Becker.

"This is a dream final! When it is also about the world No. 1 ranking in a Grand Slam final, it fulfils childhood dreams. Tsitsipas has already said that. Sure, Djokovic has already been world No. 1, but he is looking at a 22nd Grand Slam singles title. He can equal Rafael Nadal's record. So either way, tennis history will be made,” the German added.

Ahead of the men's singles final between Novak Djokovic and Stefanos Tsitsipas, Australian Open chief Craig Tiley has warned the Serbian and his family. After Djokovic's father Srdjan Djokovic was pictured posing with a Russian flag-holding fan, Tiley said the family needed to be 'really careful' as the tournament was a platform that could be used by people for 'disruptive' purposes. "My advice is that you have to be really careful because if this is an event of global significance, it's a platform," Tiley was quoted as saying by AFP. "When you have hundreds of thousands of people come through the gate, you're going to naturally have some people that are coming here with an intention to be disruptive, and don't get yourself caught in the middle of that." Notably, on Wednesday, a video posted on YouTube by a known Vladimir Putin supporter showed Djokovic's father posing alongside him for a picture. The man wore a 'Z' symbol on his shirt and held a Russian flag with Putin's face on it. After the post went viral, Djokovic's father released a statement saying, "I was outside with Novak’s fans as I have done after all of my son’s matches to celebrate his wins and take pictures with them. I had no intention of being caught up in this." Tiley echoed a similar line and said Djokovic senior did not want to partake in such activity and that the family was against the ongoing war. "The family were very good. They were upset that it was taken that way. There was no intention of it. His dad particularly does not support war and they're very focused on supporting peace." He went out to celebrate with my fans." 'Be really careful...' Australian Open chief warns Djokovic and family after Russian flag controversy

Amid the flag controversy at the ongoing 2023 Australian Open that had everyone talking, Srdjan Djokovic, Novak Djokovic’s father decided to watch his son’s semis clash on Friday from his home. Earlier, a video surfaced on the internet showing Novak’s father, Srdjan posing with a fan holding a Russian flag with Putin’s face on it, leading the Australian Open organisers to intervene in the matter. This photo stirred quite a backlash from a certain section of fans and current and former tennis players who asked immediate action to be taken against Novak and his father.

Chasing his record tenth Australian Open title, the veteran Novak will be facing unseeded American Tommy Paul in the second semi-final. Meanwhile his father, in an email statement informed everyone about his decision to not be there inside the stadium and instead be watching Novak’s crucial knockout match from home.

"So there is no disruption to tonight's semi-final for my son or for the other player, I have chosen to watch from home," Srdjan said in an emailed statement.

It was during Novak’s quarters match on Wednesday that four fans who displayed ‘inappropriate flags and symbols’ as termed by the organisers, were questioned by the Victoria police. Several other videos and images also showed fans carrying Russian flags just outside the Rod Laver arena. Novak’s father’s video of him standing right beside a fan holding a Russian flag with Putin’s photo on it also made headlines during that time only.

In revert to that, Tennis Australia released a statement the next day, saying, "Players and their teams have been briefed and reminded of the event policy regarding flags and symbols and to avoid any situation that has the potential to disrupt."

"We continue to work closely with event security and law enforcement agencies," the statement added.

Following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, Russian and Belarusian players were barred from competing at Wimbledon last year. They, however, were allowed to compete at Melbourne Park but not under their country’s flags; neither were they allowed to wear any accessories that reflect their country’s flag in any way.

Djokovic’s father to watch son's Australian Open semis match from home after Russian flag controversy

A rampant Novak Djokovic surged into a 10th Australian Open final Friday to close in on a record-equalling 22nd Grand Slam crown, with only Stefanos Tsitsipas now standing in his way. The Serbian fourth seed overcame an early wobble to romp past unseeded American Tommy Paul 7-5, 6-1, 6-2 on Rod Laver Arena in style. Another title on Sunday will move him alongside Rafael Nadal with 22 Slam wins and see the 35-year-old return to world number one for the first time since last June.

Greek third seed Tsitsipas, who ground past Russian 18th seed Karen Khachanov 7-6 (7/2), 6-4, 6-7 (6/8), 6-3 in the other semi-final, can also become the top-ranked player should he lift the trophy.

The incident sparked a backlash from Ukraine and led to calls for Djokovic's father to be banned from the tournament. Srdjan issued a statement ahead of the semi-final saying he would stay away, insisting he "wishes only for peace" and never wanted to cause "disruption".

There was an empty seat next to his mother Dijana during the match.

"I'm really thankful that I have enough gas in my legs to be able to play at this level on one of the biggest tennis courts in the world," said Djokovic, who is now 11-0 for the season and into a 33rd Grand Slam final. "Of course, I'm not as fresh as the beginning of the tournament but we put in a lot of hours in the off-season on fitness in order to be in a good condition to play best of five (sets).

"I know what's expected of me, I've been in this situation so many times in my career. Experience helps also," he added of being in another final.

The win extended his unbeaten streak at the Australian Open to 27 matches to claim sole ownership of the Open-era record at Melbourne Park ahead of Andre Agassi.

Djokovic had never played Paul before and said he was wary of a "very explosive, very dynamic player", with the American initially refusing to go quietly.

Djokovic vs T. Paul Live Streaming: When, where, how to watch Australian Open 2023 Semifinal Live Streaming

Novak Djokovic's father has been filmed posing with fans brandishing banned Russian flags at the Australian Open, including one featuring Vladimir Putin, in scenes Ukraine's ambassador Thursday slammed as "a disgrace". The Serbian star Djokovic had just booked his place in the tournament semi-final with a straight-sets thumping of Russian opponent Andrey Rublev at Rod Laver Arena on Wednesday night. After the match a group of fans unfurled Russian flags -- which are banned at Melbourne Park -- near the stadium and chanted pro-Russian and pro-Putin slogans. Tennis Australia said four people "revealed inappropriate flags and symbols and threatened security guards". Police were called and they were ejected from Melbourne Park.

A video later posted to a pro-Russian Australian YouTube account showed Djokovic's father Srdjan posing with a man holding a Russian flag bearing President Putin's image. The man with the flag is wearing a black T-shirt with a "Z" on it -- a symbol supporting Russia's invasion of Ukraine. The video is captioned: "Novak Djokovic's father makes bold political statement."

Australian Open 2023: Novak Djokovic's father seen posing with a man holding a Russian flag

Novak Djokovic was at his flawless best yet again as he served a masterclass to defeat fifth seed Andrey Rublev 6-1 6-2 6-4 and advance to the semi-finals of the Australian Open.

Novak Djokovic was at his flawless best yet again as he served a masterclass to defeat fifth seed Andrey Rublev 6-1 6-2 6-4 and advance to the semi-finals of the Australian Open. Djokovic, with his heavily strapped thigh, took to the court as a man possessed. From the first set, the Serbian played with authority and targeted Rublev's rather weak backhand. He broke early at 3-1 and did not look back from thereon. The Russian showed flashes of brilliance that dug him out of a hole in the previous round against Danish teenager Holger Rune but the class of Djokovic simply proved too overpowering for him. WATCH | Djokovic can't forget Australian deportation but wants to move on In the second set, Djokovic found himself in a minor spot of bother as he was forced to save a breakpoint. However, the nine-time champion at the Rod Laver Arena used his full experience to not only save the point but take the set as well. Afterwards, he let out a huge roar, indicating his strong desire to go the distance yet again. Devoid of ideas and energy, Rublev somehow managed to stay in the game in the third set for the major part, before falling apart. "Andrey is a great opponent, great player. I have tons of respect for him, one of the biggest forehands, quickest players on the tour," said Djokovic after the match. "I knew what the game plan was and it was important that I found my best tennis." He missed the last tournament after being deported, otherwise, the record could have been far more intimidating. The Serb has set up a last-four clash with American Tommy Paul. It will be his 10th semifinal appearance at Melbourne Park, a record only bettered by Roger Federer (15) and Jack Crawford (11). (With inputs from agencies) WATCH WION LIVE HERE:

Australian Open: Novak Djokovic crushes Andrey Rublev, marches to the semi-finals

Nine-time champion at the Rod Laver Arena, Novak Djokovic cruised into the quarter-final of the Australian Open after brushing aside the home hope of Alex de Minaur 6-2, 6-1, 6-2 in straight sets.

Nine-time champion at the Rod Laver Arena, Novak Djokovic cruised into the quarter-final of the Australian Open after brushing aside the home hope of Alex de Minaur 6-2, 6-1, 6-2 in straight sets. Djokovic was at his imperious best on the evening as he made short work of de Minaur, who looked bereft of ideas for the major part of the game. With hamstring niggle persisting, Djokovic took the approach of going hard and early at his opponent. The Australian 22nd seed would have hoped Djokovic to be circumspect and careful in his shot-making but the Serb came out full guns blazing. The Australian managed to stay in the first game till 5-2 before Djokovic changed gears to achieve the breakpoint. Afterwards, it was a one-way street as Djokovic toyed with his opponent. WATCH | Djokovic can't forget Australian deportation but wants to move on × The Serb reflected on the same and said it was his 'best game of the year' so far. "I played the best match of this year so far. Obviously, you never know what's going to happen on the court...I thought first four or five games were quite close, but after one break in the first set I felt more loose and free to go through the ball and be more aggressive." "I really wanted to win in straight sets." The fourth-round victory means that Djokovic is 25 matches unbeaten in the tournament, with the streak stretching from 2018. The Serb will now square up against fifth seed Andrey Rublev who had a Houdini-esque escape on Monday, coming out on top after a five-set epic clash against Danish teenager Holger Rune. Australian Open: Djokovic completes De Minaur demolition to storm into the quarter-final

Sebastian Korda stunned two-time losing finalist Daniil Medvedev at the Australian Open on Friday, adding the Russian to a growing list of top seeds crashing out early.

The 31st-ranked American, son of 1998 Australian Open champion Petr Korda, blasted past the seventh seed 7-6 (9/7), 6-3, 7-6 (7/4) on Rod Laver Arena to race into the last 16.

Korda's upset teed up a clash with Polish 10th seed Hubert Hurkacz who battled past Canada's Denis Shapovalov 7-6 (7/3), 6-4, 1-6, 4-6, 6-3 - for a place in the quarter-finals.

"An unbelievable match, I sort of knew what I had to do and I stuck with it even when I was going up and down with the emotions," said the 22-year-old Korda, adding that his game plan was "just go for it".

Medvedev was a losing finalist at the last two Australian Opens, to Novak Djokovic in 2021 and then in a demoralising five-set defeat 12 months ago against Rafael Nadal after leading by two sets.

He was attempting to become only the fourth man in the Open era to reach three consecutive Melbourne Park finals after Djokovic, Mats Wilander, and Ivan Lendl.

But that quest is now over as he joined defending champion Nadal, second seed Casper Ruud and eighth seed Taylor Fritz as high-profile first-week casualties at the season-opening Grand Slam.

Australian Open: Two-time finalist Daniil Medvedev crashes out in straight sets

Second seed Casper Ruud was sent packing in the Australian Open second round Thursday with defeat to hard-hitting American Jenson Brooksby, a day after Rafael Nadal also went out.

The Norwegian Ruud, who took a medical timeout after the second set, succumbed 6-3, 7-5, 6-7 (4/7), 6-2 to the 39th-ranked Brooksby on Rod Laver Arena.

His early exit left the tournament without its top two seeds in week one after Nadal's shock loss on the same court Wednesday to another American in Mackenzie McDonald.

It opens the door to Novak Djokovic winning a 10th Melbourne title and temporarily derails Ruud's dreams of becoming world number one.

However, the 21-time Grand Slam winner dug in deep, used his experience and managed to break Couacaud on his first serve in the third set.

After racing to a 3-0 advantage, Djokovic comfortably wrapped the set and did not allow any breathing room in the fourth set to Couacaud.

Apart from the slight niggle, Djokovic also had to contend with a few drunk spectators who repeatedly attempted to provoke the 'Serb'.

During the third set, Djokovic went to the chair umpire, complaining that the crowd member be kicked out for being "drunk out of his mind".

"The guy is drunk out of his mind, from the first point he's been provoking me. He's not here to watch tennis, he just wants to get in my head." The chair umpire refused to intervene at the time but the security officers could be seen escorting four beer-guzzling spectators out of the stadium later. Enzo deserves credit for the fight, he played some great tennis, especially in the second set and for deservedly pushing the match to the fourth set," said Djokovic after the match. "We both had medical timeouts and struggled a little but, but I managed to respond well in the third and especially the fourth." Djokovic will be meeting Grigor Dimitrov in the next round. The Serb has a good record against the Bulgarian, winning nine times out of the 10 they have squared up against each other. WATCH | Defending champion and top seed Rafael Nadal crashes out of the Australian Open The last time Dimitrov came up top against Djokovic was at the ATP Masters 1000 Madrid in 2013. "I haven't played Grigor in many years, I don't think we've ever faced each other here on this court," said Djokovic on the match-up. "Hopefully it's going to be an entertaining match, I know him really well, we are friends off the court, Balkan brothers. Let the better player win." With three of the top 10 seeds viz. Rafael Nadal, Casper Ruud and Taylor Fritz already out of the tournament, the path to a 22nd Major looks increasingly promising for Djokovic. (With inputs from agencies) WATCH WION LIVE HERE:

Australian Open: Djokovic battles rowdy fans and niggle to blast into the third round

21-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic was at his scintillating best in the opening round of the Australian Open. Making a comeback into the tournament after being deported from the Down Under country last year, Djokovic blasted Spain's Roberto Carballes Baena without much fuss.

Walking into a rousing reception from the Rod Laver Arena crowd, Djokovic dominated from the word go and came out trumps with an imposing 6-3, 6-4, 6-0 scoreline.

Djokovic was off the blocks in a rusty manner as he had to save three break points in the fifth game. However, the nine-time winner at Melbourne Park regained his rhythm and broke next game to secure a 4-2 lead and quickly close out the set.

A brief hamstring issue in the second set appeared to cause some discomfort to the Serbian but he managed to soldier on and broke the Spaniard yet again for a 4-3 lead.

The last set proved too much for Baena who surrendered as Djovokic blitzed past him, winning six games in succession.

"Thank you for giving me such a welcoming reception that I could only dream of. "I feel really happy that I'm back here in Australia and on the court where I have had the biggest success in my career," said Djokovic after the match.

Australian Open: Djokovic returns with a bang in quest for his 22nd Grand Slam title

Novak Djokovic said his controversial deportation ahead of last year's Australian Open proved an unlikely catalyst for success in 2022, allowing him to regroup on the practice court before bouncing back with key titles. The Serbian star player trained hard in the months after he was deported and while barred from competing in the United States for not being vaccinated against COVID-19. He later won his seventh Wimbledon crown and capped a year of disruption by winning the ATP Tour Finals for a sixth time in Turin. Back at Melbourne Park after his visa ban was lifted by the Australian government, Djokovic said missing events due to his vaccination stance had renewed his determination on the training court.

"Yes, absolutely. I mean, you normally, as a professional tennis player on the highest level, don't have much time to really have a longer training block," Djokovic told reporters on Saturday.

"The fact that I wasn't playing for several months beginning of last year allowed me to really get together with my team and work on my body, on my strokes, which has later helped me to achieve some great results."

Djokovic told local broadcaster Nine Network that he felt like "the villain of the world" last year in Melbourne where he was detained at a hotel with asylum-seekers before being deported.

However, he was warmly received by a packed crowd at Rod Laver Arena on Friday night during a practice match against home hero Nick Kyrgios. Djokovic, who will bid for a record-extending 10th Australian Open crown, said he had no choice but to move on from the events of last year.

The 35-year-old said he was still cautious about a hamstring strain he picked up in Adelaide and was training lighter than usual to conserve his energy. There was no holding back on his motivation to grab another Melbourne Park crown, though, and draw level with champion Rafael Nadal in the Grand Slam race with a 22nd major title.

"That's why I keep on playing professional tennis, competition tennis, because I want to be the best, I want to win the biggest tournaments in the world," said Djokovic, who opens his tournament against unseeded Spaniard Roberto Carballes Baena.

"There is no secret about it. It doesn't get bigger than this.

Deporting drama last year helped me taste success later as I worked on my body, my game, says Novak Djokovic

With the 2023 Australian Open about to get underway in Melbourne from Monday, January 16th, Tennis veteran Boris Becker lauded the 22-time Grand Slam winner Rafael Nadal saying he would never bet against the Spaniard. Talking highly of Nadal, who won the Hardcourt event Down Under last year, Becker said Rafa, as many of Nadal's fans call him, was never in reckoning before the start of the tournament and yet went on to claim the top prize a couple of weeks later.

While talking with Eurosport, Becker said, “As long as this guy is around, I would never bet against him. Let's remember last year, he actually had no chance, arrived in Australia and played a Challenger competition to prepare. Nobody took that seriously, many even smiled. Two weeks later, Nadal won the Australian Open.”

Further showering praises on the 36-year-old, Boris added that Nadal is a fierce competitor, and that his duel with yet another superstar Novak Djokovic is fantastic to watch. With both vying for the Australian Open crown, it would be interesting to see who comes on top.

“He is an incredible competitor, and if he didn't have a chance, he wouldn't play. On top of that, he can see Djokovic rushing in with one eye. Maybe Rafa thought he had him beat in Grand Slams, but then Novak won at Wimbledon. Fabulous, that duel,” six-time Grand Slam winner added.

Putting him second on the list for the race for the AO title this time, Becker added he is a big fan of Nadal and that the Spaniard is a role model for millions of people across the world.

“I am a big Nadal fan. He is an absolute role model for young players and exemplifies what can be achieved with attitude, discipline and pure will. In my ranking of the favourites for Melbourne, he comes in second,” Boris reckoned.

Shedding some light on Nadal's rival, Russia's Daniil Medvedev, Becker opined that he is a formidable opponent and that despite having a relatively weaker second half of 2022, Medvedev should never be underestimated.

“Daniil Medvedev is flying under the radar, but for me he is the third favourite. He had a somewhat weaker second half of 2022 by his standards, but he should never be underestimated. He is not called the chess player of the tennis scene for nothing and is a formidable opponent,” the veteran concluded.

Novak Djokovic dug deep to save a match point on the way to a battling 6-7(8) 7-6(3) 6-4 victory over Sebastian Korda in the Adelaide International 1 final on Sunday ahead of this month's Australian Open. A day after he overwhelmed Daniil Medvedev in the semi-final despite sustaining a hamstring injury, Djokovic moved freely on court but was pushed hard by Korda before the Serb made a late charge to deny his opponent a potentially career-defining win.

"I hope you enjoyed the show tonight," Djokovic said. "I want to say a few words to Seb and his team. Amazing tournament, amazing effort today. I'll probably say that you were closer to the victory today than I was.

"The future is bright for you so just keep going," Novak said.

Korda broke for a 5-4 lead in a tense first set and was 40-0 up on serve when Djokovic hit back to level the scores, but the world number five came undone in the tiebreak as the American soaked up the pressure to convert his seventh set point. A fuming Djokovic yelled at and banished two members of his entourage from their courtside seats before the second set, in which he uncharacteristically struggled with his returns to allow Korda to dominate the rallies.

But with the crowd behind him on his return to Australia after his deportation last year due to his unvaccinated coronavirus status, Djokovic raised his game to save a match point before forcing a tiebreak which the top seed won.

Djokovic held for a 5-4 lead in the final set and the 35-year-old closed out victory with a break of serve as Korda finally felt the pressure and double-faulted before making two errors.

Djokovic thanked his team for tolerating him in good and bad times.

"Today I'm sure they didn't have a blast with me going back and forth with them," Djokovic said before addressing the crowd. "It definitely felt like playing at home. You guys made me feel very welcome, so thank you."

Novak Djokovic battled back from 5-2 down in the first set to beat Quentin Halys 7-6(3) 7-6(5) and move into the Adelaide International 1 quarter-final on Thursday. Halys, ranked 64th in the world, has never beaten a top-10 opponent but gave Djokovic a big scare before the former world number one prevailed in two tiebreakers. Djokovic, who has now won 31 consecutive singles matches in Australia, is preparing for the Jan. 16-29 Australian Open, where he is seeking a record-extending 10th crown.

The Serb was unable to defend his title last year after he was deported on the eve of the tournament for not being vaccinated against COVID-19. "It was a great performance from my opponent today. I want to congratulate him for great quality and a great fight. Tough luck but he played like a top 10 player today, no doubt," Djokovic, now ranked fifth in the world, said. "As far as my game goes, I feel good on the court. I didn't have such a great start, I lost my serve early. He was serving really well, fast, big serves, hitting his spots in the box very well. "Just difficult to play in this kind of court that is really fast. It kind of favours the server. If you're serving well, it's tough to break the serve of a big server like him, so two tiebreaks were probably the most realistic score."

The 35-year-old Serbian will next play Denis Shapovalov, who he has beaten in all seven of their meetings. The 21-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic might miss the Indian Wells Masters and Miami Open once more after the United States extended the requirement for all non-American nationals to get vaccinated against COVID-19. Serbian star Novak Djokovic likely to miss Indian Wells, Miami Open after US extend COVID-19 vaccine rules

2022 was an action-packed season for tennis lovers. It started with Novak Djokovic's Covid vaccination row at the Australian Open before Rafael Nadal won the French Open. The likes of Elena Rybakina and Iga Swiatek also tasted success in women's singles. While the year saw the rise of Carlos Alcaraz -- winning the US Open -- it was also a witness to the retirement of Roger Federer, Serena Williams, Ashleigh Barty, etc. After lots that took place in 2022, a new tennis season has already kicked off and the games are coming thick and fast in 2023; with the Tata Open (in Pune) and the Australian Open which will commence on January 16.

Talking about the Tata Open, the reigning US Open champions Rajeev Ram and Joe Salisbury are currently plying their trade at the event, being held in Pune. The pair have been a force to reckon with in recent years and will like to remain consistent and go a step ahead in 2023. After a Round of 16 victory in the Tata Open, where Rajeev-Joe went past Sebastian Baez-Luis David Martinez 6-3, 7-6 (7-1), Rajeev had an exclusive interaction with WION's Sports Editor Digvijay Singh Deo. The American player spoke at length on the emergence of young talents, the retirement of stalwarts and on Novak Djokovic ahead of the Australian Open. Excerpts:

Rajeev a very happy new year to you and considering your Indian roots this must be a memorable experience returning to India to play and that too as the top seed.

Happy New Year to you as well. I've been in India for quite some time, since 2016. Covid had a major role to play in it. Happy to be in Pune. Never been here so it is good.

Tennis saw three high-profile retirements in 2022 with Roger Federer, Serena Williams and before them Ashleigh Barty. with Rafael Nadal one is not sure how much more punishment that battered body can take...Nadal and Djokovic did win three of the four slams last year but has the baton been officially passed?

I don't think it is really past yet. I honestly believe if Novak was playing in Australia, Wimbledon had points and if he was allowed to play US Open, he would have been the No. 1 ranked player to date. He showed his class again in the ATP Tour finals. He played so little last year but still was able to keep such a high ranking. It is getting there (for the young guns) but I don't think Djokovic is ready to give up just yet.

Obviously, when we factor in the 2022 season we have to remember that Djokovic didn't play as much as he would have liked. Let's leave his vaccination beliefs aside and focus only on the phenomenal player that he is. You saw him at the tour finals and do you get the feeling that he is going to carry a lot of hurt into the Australian Open and is the player to beat?

He's the player to beat. I'm guessing he has won 8-9 times there. He is so difficult on that surface and everybody will agree that he is the guy to beat there for sure, even if his ranking is not No 1.

A lot of players will also head into the Aus open thinking hang on, we were the next gen but it's Alcaraz who has seized the initiative...the likes of Medvedev, Tsitsipas, Zverev face a defining season don't you think?

I think you have seen this generation of Federer, Nadal, Murray and Djokovic have eaten up a few generations. I don't think Medvedev, Tsitsipas and the likes are done by any stretch but I think they know they have such young talents on their heels and that will make for a super competitive 4-5 years when Djokovic and Nadal did. Don't think it will be like the last few years where only a few guys have dominated. I think it will be very competitive and refreshing in that sense.

Before I close this, what will be a good season for you personally, something you would be happy with coming December this year?

Winning slams always make a great year. We have managed to do that for the last 2-3 years in a row so hopefully, that's a start. Becoming the No. 1 team in the world is something we haven't achieved. We have been No. 2 for quite some time. Those two things are at the top of the list. Everything else will follow through.

Ahead of the marquee tournament Down Under, the organisers on Thursday (December 29) confirmed that there is a hike in prize money.

The season's first Grand Slam will see a prize pool of USD 76.5 million, a 3.4 per cent jump from last edition. Not only this, the players will also be able to make the most of the new services, experiences, and facilities in Melbourne when the tournament kicks off on January 16.

A lot to play for Rafa, Djokovic, Iga Swiatek, and more

One of the biggest aspects is the increase in the prize money for players in the early rounds to help in their careers. The winner of the men's and women's singles will earn a whopping USD 2,975,000 whereas the runner-up will receive USD 1,625,000. For making it to the opening round, a player will get USD 106,250, meanwhile, a player entering the final round of qualifying will be able to take home USD 55,150.

The men's and women's doubles winners will get USD 695,000 while the mixed doubles champions will be able to return with USD 157,750.

Talking about the increase in the prize pool, Australian Open tournament director, Craig Tiley, said ahead of the tournament, "At the Australian Open we’ve upped prize money for every round from qualifying, through to the finals, with the major increases in the early rounds, where these substantial rewards help players invest in their own careers and in many cases, set themselves up for success throughout the year."

Australian Open: 3.4 per cent increase from 2022! Organisers announce record prize pool for 2023 season-opener

Novak Djokovic will never forget how it felt to be deported from Australia earlier this year but the Serb said his willingness to return for next month's Grand Slam at Melbourne Park shows the depth of feeling he has for the country. Djokovic was deported on the eve of the 2022 Australian Open in January for not being vaccinated against COVID-19 and received a three-year travel ban from the country.

However, the former world number one's visa ban was waived in November, opening up a path for Djokovic to target a 10th Australian Open crown and giving him a chance to tie Rafa Nadal's mark of 22 Grand Slam titles. "You can't forget those events, it's one of those things that stick with you," said Djokovic in his first news conference since returning to Australia. "It stays with you for the rest of your life. It's something I've never experienced before and hopefully never again, but it is a valuable life experience for me. But I have to move on and coming back to Australia speaks about how I feel about this country and how I feel about playing here."

Djokovic will warm up for the Australian Open by playing in the Adelaide International starting on Jan. 1 and is hoping for a warm reception from local fans. "It's a great place and the people in Adelaide, and generally in Australia, love tennis, love sports and it's a sporting nation so hopefully we're going to have a lot of people watching and we can have a good time," Djokovic said. "I'm hoping everything is going to be positive. Obviously, it's not something that I can predict. I'll do my best to play some good tennis and bring good emotions and good feelings to the crowd."

Djokovic said his overall experience in Australia had not been soured by what happened in January. "What happened 12 months ago was not easy to digest for some time but at the same time I had to move on. Those circumstances will not replace what I have lived in Melbourne and in Australia throughout my entire career," Djokovic said. "So I come with positive emotions and I really look forward to playing there. It's been my favourite Grand Slam, the results prove that."

Former world number one Novak Djokovic can't forget being deported from Australia but is ready to move on

Former world number one Novak Djokovic arrived in Australia on Tuesday almost one year after he was deported for refusing to be vaccinated against Covid-19, tennis officials said.
The nine-time Australian Open champion was initially banned from the country for three years after losing a high-stakes legal battle in January over his vaccine status.

Australia has since lifted its requirement for visitors to show proof of vaccination against Covid.

The government confirmed in November that the unvaccinated Serb was no longer barred and had been granted a visa allowing him to play in the opening Grand Slam of the year, which starts next month.

Tennis Australia chief executive Craig Tiley said he hoped local fans would embrace Djokovic's return.

"We welcome him back to Australia. I think as we speak he's landing in Adelaide and I think that he is going to be again the player to beat," he told reporters.

"I have a great deal of confidence in the Australian public. I have a lot of confidence that the fans will react how we hope they will react."

Tennis Australia confirmed that Djokovic had touched down.

Novak Djokovic lands Down Under to play Australian Open, a year after being deported

World number one Carlos Alcaraz said he is lucky to have Novak Djokovic as a rival on the ATP Tour as it gives him the chance to test himself against one of the sport's greatest players. Djokovic was deported from Australia in the lead-up to the season's first Grand Slam in January for not being vaccinated against COVID-19 and missed several tournaments including the U.S. Open, where Spaniard Alcaraz claimed his maiden major.

With Djokovic granted a visa to travel Down Under next year -- where he will target a 10th Australian Open title -- Alcaraz said he was looking forward to a potential meeting with the 21-times Grand Slam champion.

"Tennis is better having the best players in the world, and for the fans as well it's good to see a tournament with the best players," Alcaraz told reporters at the Mubadala World Tennis Championship exhibition tournament in Abu Dhabi. "I want to see Novak play in every tournament. I always say if you want to be the best, you have to beat the best player in the world. I'm a lucky guy to have him on the tour."

Alcaraz enjoyed a superb 2022 which he finished as the year-end number one and said he was nearing full fitness ahead of the new season, having missed the ATP Finals and Davis Cup due to an abdominal injury sustained at the Paris Masters.

"I feel good finally. I had a month to recover... and right now I feel almost 100%. I have been training normally this past week and I'm feeling great," Alcaraz said. "Of course having a target on my back from everyone is going to be a little bit different for me this year and I have to be prepared for that.

"I'm going to try to finish 2023 in the same position as now. It's going to be a long year but I'm going to enjoy it."

Djokovic to play in Adelaide International ahead of Australian Open return

India is not just about cricket. Sure, the game remains a top choice for many but a plethora of non-cricket stalwarts have popularised various other sports. Talking about tennis, the game's rise has been spectacular. Of course, the likes of Vijay Amritraj, Jaideep Mukherjee, Leander Paes, and Mahesh Bhupathi were the pioneers of the game, Sania Mirza, Rohan Bopanna, Ramesh Ramanathan, Sumit Nagal, Somdevdev Burman, etc., have given it an extra mileage in the country.

Riya Bhatia is another tennis sensation on the rise. The 25-year-old is making giant strides and has been India's new No. 2 ranked player for quite some time. In addition, she clinched two national titles -- hardcourt and grass-court national championships in 2016. Recently, she was seen playing for the Pro Veri Supersmashers in the ongoing fourth season of the Pro Tennis League (PTL) -- a platform for bidding young stars to hone their skills and showcase their credentials -- and ahead of it, WION's Aditya Sahay had an exclusive interview with her. During the interaction, she shed light on her game style, challenges of playing on different surfaces and named her favourites from the big league of players.

How is Pro Tennis League honing the skills of young players?

I would definitely say it is helping the sport in India. Wish I had something like this when I was a junior. We can mentor juniors and teach them how to play certain points. It's only through such leagues that they can connect with us and vice versa. With Indian people coming and watching us, it's a new format so it's a fun thing for all involved.

How is it for Riya to play on different surfaces?

I'm an all-round player. Changing surfaces isn't a big issue for me. I enjoy playing on all. My favourite is clay but I've been performing well on hard courts. Grass is something close to my heart and I played my best game there at the WTA in Germany and won the national grasscourt. My game is more of an all-round player where I can change my game style according to the court and conditions needed. Certainly, there are many things I've been working on and these leagues (such as the PTL) are a good way to prepare for big tournaments. You get into a zone by playing such leagues and PTL is definitely helpful.

Your big goals going ahead?

I've been No. 2 in India for a very long time. My highest ranking in singles was 300 in internationals and my goal is to go higher than that. To represent India in the Olympics and win a medal. I also want to play some Grand Slams and win big matches over there.

Whose your favourites among the current league of players?

I don't want to copy but there is a lot to learn from great players. I've always looked up to Roger Federer. He is always calm. Lots to imbibe from him on how he thinks, moves on the court and creates magic. From women, I absolutely love Ashleigh Barty. I feel my game style is close to hers. She's very aggressive. At the moment, I like to watch a lot of matches of Novak Djokovic and Iga Swiatek.

While the Pro Veri Supersmashers have had a forgettable run in the ongoing PTL, Riya's career has surely taken off with a lot of promise.
