Japan considers deployment of hypersonic missiles by 2030 to counter security threats: Report

North Korea fired at least three ballistic missiles near the Japanese territory making this the second test flight in a month. This comes a day after the nuclear-armed country fired a record 23 missiles in a day, one of which landed off the coast of South Korea.

However, one of the intercontinental ballistic missiles failed to launch following its second stage separation, the Yonhap news agency reported citing the South Korean military.

The J-Alert Emergency Broadcasting System warned the residents of Miyagi, Yamagata, and Niigata prefectures of the country to seek shelter indoors as well as prompted the Japanese government to issue evacuation alerts and suspend train services in the country.

However, minutes after the launch was first reported, Japan’s Coast Guard said that the missile had already fallen into the Pacific Ocean. Meanwhile, South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff said that they detected, what they believe to be an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) launch, from near the North Korean capital Pyongyang and subsequently fired two short-range missiles an hour later from Kaechon, north of the capital city.

According to Japanese Defense Minister Yasukazu Hamada, the missiles reached a maximum altitude of 2,000 kilometres and flew about 750 kilometres. Initially, the government had believed that at least one of the missiles flew over the northern territory but later revised that it was not the case and said there were no overflies.

U.S, Japan & South Korea vows closer ties; North Korea warned over nuclear test

Following the discovery of a North Korean defector's decomposing remains last Wednesday in Seoul, South Korean officials opened an inquiry.

The defection occurred in 2002, and the police and South Korea's Unification Ministry identified the defector as a lady in her 40s.

According to Seoul police, the woman had often skipped rent payments and was unable to be reached. As a result, the public housing corporation Seoul Housing & Communities Corporation sent personnel to check on her flat, where they discovered her dead.

According to investigators, her body had almost skeleton-like decomposition. Police believe she has been deceased for roughly a year based on the cold clothing she was wearing, but an autopsy will provide more precise information.

Although the Unification Ministry did not give her name, it claimed that she had previously been hailed by officials as an example of a successful relocation.

According to the ministry, the woman served as a counsellor at the Korea Hana Foundation from 2011 to 2017, assisting other defectors with their relocation to the South.

The woman reportedly requested police not extend their protection services in 2019, according to Seoul police. South Korean officials regularly monitor North Korean defectors and conduct welfare checks while assisting with their resettlement.

The woman was not on the Unification Ministry's own monitoring list, the ministry added.
