A report claims that two teenagers in North Korea were executed for watching South Korean films. The incident allegedly took place, earlier this year, in October but the information about the executions emerged last week. Furthermore, another boy of similar age was also executed for killing his stepmother, the report claims.

The report by The Mirror citing witnesses said boys were aged somewhere between 16 and 17 and were shot in front of the “horrified” locals. The witnesses also said that they were forced to watch the executions, “The authorities put the teen-aged students in front of the public, sentenced them to death, and immediately shot them,” the witnesses reportedly told Radio Free Asia.

However, this would not apply to deposed party leaders V K Sasikala and her nephew TTV Dhinakaran and they would never be re-inducted, senior AIADMK leader and state Fisheries Minister D Jayakumar told reporters here.

O Raja was re-inducted into the party only after he had expressed regret for his action, Jayakumar said but refused to divulge what kind of ‘anti-party activity’ actually prompted the leadership to sack him.

“If a sacked party functionary gives a (regret) letter, what the party will do– it will consider his regret and the request for re-induction,” he told reporters here.

He was responding to questions on Raja returning to the party fold in just about five days after his expulsion last week and said such things had happened during the time of the late AIADMK supremo J Jayalalithaa also.

Raja was re-inducted in line with the “forget and forgive policy,” Jayakumar added.

“This is not a big issue. He expressed regret and the party took a decision (accordingly to take him back),” the minister said.

Raja was removed from all posts and the AIADMK’s primary membership by AIADMK coordinator Panneerselvam and the joint coordinator, chief minister K Palaniswami, on December 19 for “going against the party’s policies and bringing disrepute to it.”

However, Raja was re-admitted Monday after he expressed regret for his action in person and through a letter, and requested that he be re-inducted into the party.

Asked if such a yardstick applied for Sasikala and her nephew Dhinakaran, Jayakumar replied in the negative.

“Anyone other than these two, if they express regret, will be taken back,” he said.

The AIADMK has already made it clear that even those siding with Dhinakaran post his fallout with chief minister Palaniswami last year, were welcome to return to the AIADMK, but the leader was not welcome.

Post his fallout, Dhinakaran had floated the Amma Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam.

Post ICBM test, US and Asian allies impose new sanctions on North Korea

South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol warned of an unprecedented response if North Korea goes ahead with a nuclear test. He also urged China to help dissuade the North from pursuing banned development of nuclear weapons and missiles.

South Korean President warns of unprecedented response to North Korea nuclear test

China not only has the responsibility but the capability to influence North Korea's behaviour, South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol said, calling on Beijing to dissuade Pyongyang from pursuing banned development of nuclear weapons and missiles.

In a wide-ranging interview with Reuters on Monday, Yoon urged China, North Korea's closest ally, to fulfil its responsibilities as a permanent member of the UN Security Council and said not doing do so would lead to an influx of military assets to the region.

"What is sure is that China has the capability to influence North Korea, and China has the responsibility to engage in the process," Yoon said in his office. It was up to Beijing to decide whether it would exert that influence for peace and stability, he added.

North Korea's actions were leading to increased defence spending in countries around the region, including Japan, and more deployment of American warplanes and ships, Yoon noted.

It was in China's interest to make its "best efforts" to induce North Korea to denuclearise, he said.

Amid a record year for missile tests, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un said this week his country intends to have the world's most powerful nuclear force. South Korean and U.S. officials say Pyongyang may be preparing to resume testing nuclear bombs for the first time since 2017.

North Korea's tests overshadowed multiple gatherings this month of international leaders, including the Group of 20 conference in Bali, where Yoon pressed Chinese President Xi Jinping to do more to rein in North Korea's nuclear and missile provocations. Xi urged Seoul to improve relations with Pyongyang.

Ahead of the G20, U.S. President Joe Biden told Xi that Beijing had an obligation to attempt to talk North Korea out of conducting a seventh nuclear test, although he said it was unclear whether China had the ability to do so. Biden's national security adviser, Jake Sullivan, said before the meeting that Biden would warn Xi that North Korea's continued pursuit of weapons development would lead to an enhanced U.S. military presence in the region, something Beijing is not keen to see.

South Korea and the United States have agreed to deploy more U.S. "strategic assets" such as aircraft carriers and long-range bombers to the area, but Yoon said he did not expect changes to the 28,500 American ground forces stationed in South Korea.

When asked what South Korea and its partners would do in the event that North Korea conducts a new test, Yoon vowed a response "not seen in the past", but did not elaborate.

"It would be extremely unwise for North Korea to conduct a seventh nuclear test," he told Reuters.

"We must respond consistently, and in lockstep with each other," Yoon said, blaming a lack of consistency in the international response for the failure of three decades of North Korea policy.

China fought beside the North in the 1950-53 Korean War and has backed it economically and diplomatically ever since but analysts say Beijing may have limited power, and perhaps little desire, to curb Pyongyang. China says it enforces the UNSC sanctions, which it voted for, but has since called for them to be eased and, along with Russia, blocked U.S.-led attempts to impose new sanctions.

OPPOSES CHANGE TO TAIWAN 'STATUS QUO'

Boosting ties and coordination with Washington is the core of Yoon's foreign policy, a focus highlighted by the main item on his desk: a sign saying "The Buck Stops Here", a gift from Biden.

Like his predecessor, Moon Jae-in, Yoon has treaded cautiously amid the rising U.S.-China rivalry. China is South Korea's largest trading partner, as well as a close partner of North Korea.

On rising tensions between China and Taiwan, Yoon said any conflict there should be resolved according to international norms and rules.

Democratic Taiwan, which China claims as its own, has come under increasing military and political pressure from Beijing, which has said it will never renounce the use of force over Taiwan.

"I am firmly opposed to any attempt to change the status quo unilaterally," Yoon said.

When asked about any role in a Taiwan conflict for South Korea or the U.S. troops stationed there, Yoon said the country's forces would "consider the overall security situation" but their most imminent concern would be any North Korean military actions to take advantage of the situation.

"What is important is responding to the imminent threat surrounding us and controlling the possible threat," he said.

REGIONAL COOPERATION

Yoon has also made increasing cooperation with Japan a core goal, despite lingering legal and political disputes dating back to Japan's 1910-1945 occupation of the Korean peninsula.

South Korea, Japan, and the United States have agreed to share real time information for tracking North Korean ballistic missile tests.

As part of its biggest military expansion since World War Two, Japan is expected to procure fresh munitions, including longer-range missiles, spend on cyber defences and create a combined air, sea and land command headquarters that will work more closely with U.S. forces in Japan.

Japan's military ambitions have long been a sensitive issue in neighbouring countries, many of which were invaded before or during World War II.

Yoon's predecessor stopped many of the trilateral exercises and nearly left an intelligence sharing deal with Tokyo as relations soured.

Now Japan faced more and more threats from North Korea’s missile programme, including tests that overfly Japanese islands, Yoon said.

"I believe the Japanese government cannot be asleep at the wheel with the North Korean missile flights over their territory," he said.

Kim says North Korea will have world's strongest nuclear force, makes second appearance with daughter

Chinese President Xi Jinping stressed on increasing cooperation between North Korea and China amidst North Korea's recent testing of ballistic missiles. North Korea's state media KCNA reported that President Jinping wrote that China will be willing to work with North Korea for regional and global peace.

Chinese President Xi Jinping in a letter to his North Korean counterpart has expressed willingness for both countries to work together for regional and global peace, according to Korean Central News Agency (KCNA). The message from Xi comes in the backdrop of Pyongyang launching missiles left, right and centre. Last week, North launched an intercontinental ballistic missile with Japan describing it as one of the most powerful tests yet. Moreover, a day after the launch, North Korean leader Kim Jong-un said his country will respond to continued threats by using nuclear weapons. “Kim Jong-un solemnly declared that if the enemies continue to pose threats...our party and government will resolutely react to nukes with nuclear weapons and to total confrontation with all-out confrontation,” reported KCNA. Biden reportedly told Xi that the US would do what it needs to do to defend itself and its allies South Korea and Japan, hinting at North Korean aggression in the wake of indiscriminate missile launches. "We would have to take certain actions that would be more defensive on our behalf... to send a clear message to North Korea. We are going to defend our allies, as well as American soil and American capacity," said Biden. Ever since Xi cemented his position as the party general secretary for the next five years at the end of the 20th CPC Congress, the ties between the two leaders have somewhat blossomed. Foreign ministers of G7 industrialised nations said on Sunday (November 20) that the United Nations Security Council needs to take "significant measures" responding to latest intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) launch by North Korea. The UNSC is due to discuss North Korea in a meeting on Monday, at the request of the United States.

"(North Korea's) actions demand a united and robust response by the international community," the ministers of the United States, Japan, Canada, Germany, Britain, France and Italy said.

On Friday, North Korea tested a ballistic missile capable of reaching mainland US. The test was carried out shortly after warning of "fiercer military responses" to Washington beefing up its security presence in the region.

The G7 statement said Friday's test was a "reckless act" and "another blatant violation" of U.N. resolutions.

"The unprecedented series of unlawful ballistic missile launches conducted by (North Korea) in 2022 ... pose a serious threat to regional and international peace and security," the G7 statement said, adding that the country "cannot and will never have the status of a nuclear-weapon state".

Pyongyang tested on Friday a ballistic missile capable of reaching the U.S. mainland shortly after warning of "fiercer military responses" to Washington beefing up its security presence in the region. North Korea fires ballistic missile; Pyongyang warned US of 'fiercer' response

North Korea has fired an “unidentified ballistic missile” towards the eastern sea, the South Korean military said.

South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff General Kim Seung-kyum said the launch was made Thursday but gave no further details.

"North Korea fires an unidentified ballistic missile into East Sea," General Kim Seung-kyum said, referring to the body of water also known as the Sea of Japan, reports AFP

The launch came hours after North Korea’s foreign minister Choe Son Hue threatened to launch “fiercer” in response to the US-South Korea-Japan summit accord on the North.

On Sunday, US President Joe Biden held talks with his South Korean counterpart Yoon Suk-yeol and Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida to discuss ways to address the threat posed by the North's "unlawful weapons of mass destruction and ballistic missile programs", the White House said.

The meeting invited a strong response from the North, with its foreign minister saying they were "bringing the situation on the Korean peninsula to an unpredictable phase."

"The US 'bolstered offer of extended deterrence and the daily-increasing military activities of the allied forces around the Korean peninsula are foolish acts," Choe said in a statement carried by state news agency KCNA.
