North Korean leaders chairs key party meet; Kim Jong-un calls for bigger Nuclear arsenal

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has called for an "exponential increase" in the country's nuclear arsenal, reported North Korea's state-run television KRT on Sunday (January 1). The state media said that Kim batted for new powerful missiles for "nuclear counterstrikes". Another state-run news outlet KCNA said that Kim called for development of another ICBM (intercontinental ballistic missile) system whose main mission is quick nuclear counterstrike.

Kim reportedly highlighted the need to boost the nuclear arsenal at a key meeting of the ruling Workers' Party. He also spoke about securing "overwhelming military power" to defend North Korea's sovereignty and security.

North Korea has carried out series of missile launches and tests in the year gone by. The tests have included ICBMs. Though each test drew widespread global criticism, North Korea chose to weather the storm and carry on with the tests.

As reported by North Korean state-run news outlets on Sunday, Kim accused Washington and Seoul of carrying out a "plot to isolate and stifle" Pyongyang, calling it "unparalleled in human history."

The report came hours after North Korea fired a short-range ballistic missile off its east coast, in a rare late-night, New Year's Day weapons test.

It comes five days after Pyongyang flew five drones into the South’s airspace, stoking further tensions in the peninsula. The missile landed in the Sea of Japan, the South Korean military said, but did not give further details as to what type of missile was fired, reports AFP news agency.

"North Korea fires an unidentified ballistic missile into (the) East Sea," South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff said, referring to the body of water also known as the Sea of Japan.

North Korea has test-fired more than 70 ballistic and cruise missiles this year, a move seen by experts as a warning to the US and South Korea in a bid to bolster its leverage in future dealings.

South Korea has already been on alert over potential intrusions ever since one of the North's drones flew close to the capital Seoul.

Though South's military deployed fighter jets and attack helicopters, it failed to bring down the drones after a five-hour operation.

The major embarrassment caused South Korea’s defence minister to offer a public apology after much criticism.

South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol said the incident was “intolerable” and assured to fight back against Pyongyang to make them realise that "provocations are always met with harsh consequences".

The latest provocation comes at a time when North Korea is holding a major party meeting in Pyongyang in which Kim Jong-un and other senior party officials are setting out their policy goals for 2023 in key areas including diplomacy, security and the economy.

The United States has accused North Korea of sending ammunition to the Wagner Group, a private Russian military company, to help bolster Russia’s offensive against Ukraine.

A day after Japanese media’s report, White House National Security Council spokesman John Kirby on Thursday confirmed the development, citing the US intelligence agencies.

According to the report, North Korea shipped munitions, including artillery shells and rockets, to Russia via train last month.

“We assess that the amount of material delivered to Wagner will not change battlefield dynamics in Ukraine. But we’re certainly concerned that North Korea is planning to deliver more military equipment,” Kirby said.

The Biden administration said that the sale of arms to private military group violates the UN regulations that ban North Korea from importing or exporting weapons.

But Pyongyang denied having sent arms to Russia, calling the Japanese media reports “baseless”. It also slammed the US for sending lethal weapons to Ukraine.

"The Japanese media's false report that the DPRK offered munitions to Russia is the most absurd red herring, which is not worth any comment or interpretation," a ministry spokesperson said in a statement carried by the KCNA, reports Reuters news agency.

"The DPRK remains unchanged in its principled stand on the issue of 'arms transaction' between the DPRK and Russia which has never happened," the North Korean spokesperson said, adding it is the United States that's "bringing bloodshed and destruction to Ukraine by providing it with various kinds of lethal weapons."

South Korea's intelligence service reported on Thursday that North Korean hackers had stolen an estimated 1.5 trillion won (USD 1.2 billion) in bitcoin and other virtual assets over the previous five years, with more than half of it happening this year alone. As per experts, North Korea has turned to crypto hacking and other illegal cyber operations as a source of desperately needed foreign cash to maintain its fragile economy and fund its nuclear development in response to tough UN sanctions and the COVID-19 pandemic.

North Korea's concentration on cybercrimes after UN economic sanctions were strengthened in 2017 in response to its nuclear programme has made it one of the world's finest countries at stealing digital assets, according to South Korea's major spy agency, the National Intelligence Service.

The UN sanctions that were imposed in 2016–17 prohibited North Korea from exporting goods including coal, textiles, and seafood, and forced member nations to bring home North Koreans who had been working abroad. After enacting some of the most severe restrictions in the world to combat the epidemic, its economy experienced significant blows.

In accordance with the NIS, state-sponsored North Korean hackers are suspected of stealing 800 billion won (USD 626 million) in virtual assets this year alone, for a total estimated theft of 1.5 trillion won (USD 1.2 billion) since 2017. It was stated that South Korea contributed more than 100 billion won (USD 78 million) to the total.

It stated that further assaults by North Korean hackers are most likely to target South Korean innovative technology and private data in the next year.

Despite its economic issues, North Korea has conducted a record number of missile launches in an effort, according to some experts, to upgrade its arsenal and increase its negotiating power in the event that it has to negotiate sanctions relief or other concessions from its adversaries.

A day after firing two ballistic missiles, North Korean state agency on Monday confirmed that an 'important, final phase' test for the development of a first-of-its-kind spy satellite that Kim Jong-un wants to be readied by April 2023 was completed. According to KCNA, National Aerospace Development Administration (NADA) conducted the satellite test at the Sohae satellite launching station in Cholsan, North Pyongan province. “We confirmed important technical indicators such as camera operating technology in the space environment, data processing and transmission ability of the communication devices, tracking and control accuracy of the ground control system,” said NADA, adding that the launch took from a 'lofted angle to an altitude of 500 kilometres. It termed the results “an important success which has gone through the final gateway process of the launch of reconnaissance satellite.” Two black-and-white, low-resolution images of Seoul and Incheon, the two big cities in South Korea were captured by the satellite. However, experts analysing the photos said they were of extremely low-quality given the military standards. North Korea fired two ballistic missile into the East sea: Japan and South Korea

North Korea has tested a high-thrust solid-fuel engine that experts said would allow quicker and more mobile launch of ballistic missiles. The test, overseen by leader Kim Jong Un, took place on Thursday at North Korea’s Sohae Satellite Launching Ground.

North Korea has tested a "high-thrust solid-fuel motor", state media reported on Friday, as the isolated country seeks to develop a new strategic weapon and speeds up its nuclear and missile programmes.

North Korea's official news agency KCNA said that the test proved the motor's reliability and stability.

North Korea has been working to build more solid-fuel missiles, which are more stable and can be launched with almost no warning or preparation time.

After overseeing the test, Kim expressed "expectation that another new-type strategic weapon would be made in the shortest span of time," according to KCNA.

This year, North Korea has conducted unprecedented number of missile tests. These included an intercontinental ballistic missile capable of reaching the US mainland

In March, Kim visited the Sohae site and called for expansion of the facility which has been used to test various missile technologies, including static rocket engines and space launch vehicles.

The latest test comes as International Atomic Energy Agency chief Rafael Grossi is in Seoul for talks with South Korean officials during which he vowed an all-out effort to stop North Korea's nuclear programme.
