Tensions are again on a rise in the Korean peninsula. North Korea has warned of turning the Pacific into a 'firing range'. Watch this video to find out why.

Why has North Korea warned of turning the Pacific into a 'firing range'?

North Korea fired two more ballistic missiles of its east coast on Monday, a day after U.S along with South Korea and Japan staged joint air drills in Korean peninsula. Defence correspondent, Sooyoung oh, joins us to discuss the implications of the fresh wave of tensions in the Korean peninsula.

The world knows little about Kim Jong Un's family, children per se, but recent public appearances of his daughter have intrigued people across the world, especially those who speculate who will be the next North Korean leader—the heir of this dynasty-ruled nuclear-armed nation.

The world knows little about Kim Jong Un's family, children per se, but recent public appearances of his daughter have intrigued people across the world, especially those who speculate who will be the next North Korean leader—the heir of this dynasty-ruled nuclear-armed nation. Kim's daughter, who is identified by some source-based media reports as Kim Ju Ae, is believed to be 10 years old and was recently spotted inspecting a guard of honour, among other high-profile appearances. She was then seen alongside her father watching a sports event, which was also attended by senior government officials and her aunt, Kim Yo Jong. What do we know about Kim's daughter with absolute certainty? Basically, nothing! Not even her birth date. But when she was spotted smiling, happy, stroking her father's face, it definitely looked cute and genuine. ALSO READ | Is North Korea banning women from having same name as Kim's daughter? What do we know about Kim Jong Un's children? Ju's image went viral when she was seen with her father almost three months ago at the launch of North Korea's most powerful intercontinental ballistic missile. Previously, former NBA star Dennis Rodman had confirmed her existence, who claimed to have met Kim's baby daughter, named Ju Ae, during a 2013 visit to North Korea. According to media reports, Kim and his wife Ri Sol Ju have three children — two girls and a boy. Ju is believed to be Kim's second child. Although her name hasn't been officially confirmed, the South Korean spy agency and some experts identify her as Ju Ae. Apart from her, there is no information available regarding his other daughter and son. WATCH | Kim Jong-un, daughter Ju Ae attend sports event; Ju Ae spotted for first time at non-military event × What's behind the recent appearances? And why North Korea is sharing the photos with the world? We can say... what happens in North Korea, stays in North Korea. The world sees of North Korea, what the nation and its state-controlled media want to show to the world. The nation will show missile launches, but won't reveal the impact of the coronavirus pandemic, if the deadly virus really entered the nation. North Korea, especially the Kim regime is obsessively secretive with its various policies, hence the recent act of releasing Ju Ae's images via state media is all the more mysterious. Some media reports claim that the North Korean leader is trying to brand himself as a family guy and as a feminist to avoid the fear of not losing behind in this "modern world". But will North Korea accept a female leader? As quoted by the news agency AFP, Bronwen Dalton, who is the head of the department of management at the University of Technology Sydney's business school, said that when it comes to women assuming political leadership roles, North Korea's glass ceiling has been bulletproof. But she also agreed that change is afoot and the nation's leadership is trying to "maintain its legitimacy by creating a new version of womanhood" that reflects social changes in the country over recent decades. North Korea was forced to adjust its archaic version of an ideal woman to some extent as the younger generations have "grown up buying and selling in markets, using mobile phones and accessing foreign media content". In the current scenario, leadership has the representation of high-profile women, including foreign minister Choe Son-hui and Kim's younger sister Kim Yo Jong, who is a regime spokeswoman. But the leadership is predominantly male. Dalton told the news agency that Kim is "presiding over a propaganda apparatus forging a new narrative on the place of women". But also added that crucially, the most important role of all North Korean women is "devotion to their 'father' Kim Jong Un", and Ju Ae is perfect with this. Credit: Reuters. Is Ju Ae the heir to Kim Jong Un's throne? Some experts argue that the way Kim's "beloved" and "respected" daughter has been projected, it looks like she is apparently the heir. However, these are mere claims as North Korea is yet to confirm. As quoted by the news agency AFP, Cheong Seong-chang, who is a researcher at South Korea's Sejong Institute, said that recent developments indicate North Korea has started building a "personality cult" around Ju Ae. Cheong added that it "signals that she has been designated as the de facto successor even though she doesn't hold the official 'successor' status yet". Referring to the images in which Kim's daughter can be seen sitting next to him, surrounded by the nation's top brass, Cheong said that it suggests that Kim Ju Ae will "become the supreme commander of the military in the future". Image: Kim Jong Un, his wife Ri Sol Ju and their daughter Kim Ju Ae attend a military parade at Kim Il Sung Square in Pyongyang, North Korea February 8, 2023, in this photo released by North Korea's Korean Central News Agency (KCNA). Credit: Reuters. South Korea says... Amid the releases of photos in the media for public, South Korea said that it's too early to say whether the recently unveiled daughter of the North Korean leader is being groomed as his successor. Kwon Youngse, who is Unification Minister and South Korea's top official on North Korea, was asked about Kim's daughter during a parliamentary committee meeting in Seoul. Kwon told lawmakers: "There are views that (her appearances) are aimed at talking about a hereditary power transition." "But considering Kim Jong Un’s age and the fact that North Korea has a much more patriarchal nature than ours, there are also lots of questions about whether North Korea having a woman (prepared to) inherit power now is indeed right," Kwon added. Conclusion The main motive behind her public appearances remains a mystery, but she has definitely emerged as someone who could be assigned a leadership role by her father. Explained: Kim Jong Un's daughter is seen more than ever. Why now?

North Korea announced on Sunday (February 19) that it has successfully tested an intercontinental ballistic missile as a warning to the United States and South Korea. Pyongyang claimed the successful "surprise" drill showed Pyongyang's capability to carry out a "fatal nuclear counterattack." The "sudden launching drill" was ordered by North Korean leader Kim Jong Un at 8:00 am Saturday (2300 GMT Friday), and a Hwasong-15 missile — a weapon originally tested by the North in 2017 — was fired from Pyongyang airport that afternoon, according to the official KCNA.

The ICBM was launched at 17:22 (08:22 GMT) on Saturday, according to South Korea's military, while Japan said it flew for 66 minutes before touching down in its Exclusive Economic Zone. Japan's inquiry found the missile could have hit the US mainland, as reported by AFP.

The test, the nation's first in seven weeks, was hailed by North Korea's leadership, who said it demonstrated "the actual war capacity of the ICBM units which are ready for a mobile and mighty counterattack," according to KCNA.

It was also said that the launch was "actual proof" of the nation's "capacity of fatal nuclear counterattack on the hostile forces."

"The exercise displayed the timely and immediate deployment of the US extended deterrence assets to the Korean peninsula," demonstrating the "overwhelming force" of the allies, the ministry said in a statement.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and his daughter were caught on camera attending a sports event on Friday (February 17) in a rare public appearance. In attendance, along with Kim, were high-ranking officials. The sports game was held between the staff of the cabinet and the Ministry of National Defence. A video showed Kim Jong and his daughter cheering for participants. The friendly sports event was held to mark the Day of the Shining Star, the 81st birth anniversary of Chairman Kim Jong Il, the current leader's father who died in 2011.

The sports event also saw a tug-of-war match, among other highlights. Sitting in the VIP section, the father-daughter duo was seen smiling and clapping along with others. Believed to be around 10 years old, Kim's daughter brought "joy and excitement" to the match, local media asserted.

Fresh visuals of the North Korean leader with his daughter have yet again raised speculation if she is being groomed for a crucial role in the coming years. She was last seen with her father at the mega military parade on February 9. While she has not been named by the state media, she has been identified as Ju Ae in some reports.

South Korea and the United States are planning to stage a tabletop exercise next week to work towards preparing a joint strategy and response to North Korea’s potential use of nuclear weapons. The North has been carrying out missiles launches, including potential intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs), which has worried the South and US. South Korea’s Defence Ministry said on Friday that the exercise will be led by the alliance’s high-level Deterrence Strategy Committee and will be conducted on February 22 at the Pentagon. It will comprise senior defence policymakers from both sides, the ministry said.

Meanwhile, North Korea threatened on Friday an "unprecedentedly persistent, strong" response to the US-South Korea annual military exercises. The North's foreign ministry slammed the United States for stoking tensions and using the UN Security Council (UNSC) as "a tool for illegal hostile policy" to pressure Pyongyang.

North Korea had "refrained from any special military action" this year except for regular activities, a statement by North's foreign ministry said. "If it is the US option to show its muscle and counter everything with muscle, the same is true of the DPRK's option," the ministry said in a statement carried by state media KCNA. DPRK refers to the Democratic People's Republic of Korea.

"In case the US and South Korea carry into practice their already-announced plan for military drills which the DPRK...regards as preparations for an aggression war, they will face unprecedentedly persistent and strong counteractions," the statement said.

North's statement came less than two hours after South Korea and US joint tabletop exercises next week. North Korea had fired intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs) this year that could strike anywhere in the United States. It has also resumed preparations for its first nuclear test since 2017.

This is the first time that such exercises are being held since both sides agreed last year to hold them annually. On February 23, the officials will visit the Kings Bay naval base in Georgia that houses key nuclear submarines.

"With a focus on North Korea's nuclear threats, both sides will have in-depth discussions on various measures to strengthen US extended deterrence, including information sharing and consultation procedures," the ministry said in its statement.

In what experts see as a further indication of her positioning as the successor to her father, North Korea has unveiled new postal stamps portraying leader Kim Jong Un's daughter. Kim Jong Un's children were never mentioned in state-run North Korean media for years. But, Kim Jong Un was spotted with his daughter by his side in November 2022, at the launch of the nation's most potent ballistic missile.

The daughter, who has never been identified by Pyongyang, has since made a number of high-profile appearances. The intelligence organisation in South Korea thinks she is Ju Ae, Kim's second child.

Five of the new stamps honouring the November 18 missile launch, which were unveiled by the government-run Korea Stamp Corporation on Tuesday, feature Kim and his daughter.

In captions describing the stamps on their website, the company referred to the unnamed girl as Kim's "beloved daughter." The series will be made available for the general public on Friday (February 17).

As per some observers, the daughter's public appearances show that she is being prepared to succeed her father as the country's next leader, and the stamps solidify her status inside the Kim family's cult of personality.

An Chan-il, the director of the World Institute for North Korean Studies and a defector-turned-researcher, told AFP that the stamps "look like the official start of Kim Ju Ae's life as her father's successor."

An unknown flag attached to North Korea's Intercontinental Ballistic Missile (ICBM) launcher has triggered speculations that the country might have launched a new ICBM military unit, a new addition to its military, as per Reuters. So how does this information regarding a possible new ICBM military unit come to the fore? As per a video from last week during the country's military parade on February 9, Reuters witnessed an unknown flag which was latched on a new ICBM launcher. North Korea's supreme leader Kim Jong Un oversaw a nighttime military parade on Wednesday (February 8) which displayed multiple long-range missiles, including what analysts said could be a new, solid-fuel intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM). According to the state news agency KCNA on Thursday, the parade was held to mark the 75th anniversary of the founding of the Korean People's Army. The KCNA said that the ICBM showed Pyongyang's greatest nuclear strike ability, adding, the parade also featured tactical nuclear units.

Kim Jong Un attended the parade with his wife Ri Sol Ju, and daughter Ju Ae, news agency AFP reported citing state media photographs. The supreme leader wore a black coat and fedora- a dress which was favoured by his grandfather and North Korea's founding leader Kim Il Sung. North Korea on Wednesday (February 8) held a widely anticipated military parade, said South Korea's Yonhap news agency. The parade was expected to showcase the country's latest weapons to mark founding anniversary of the army. International analysts have said that imagery obtained from commercial satellites has for months shown North Korean troops practicing for major parade.

As of Wednesday night, North Korea's state media had not reported on the parade.

North Korea's past four military parades occurred after dark, and state media did not report on the events until the next day. It was not immediately known if North Korean leader Kim Jong Un presided over Wednesday's parade.

Such parades are typically held in downtown Pyongyang's Kim Il Sung Square and often used to show off new weapons, including ballistic missiles designed to carry nuclear warheads.

Kim called on Tuesday for strengthening the military as he paid tribute to soldiers and met with troops to commemorate the anniversary, the North's state media reported on Wednesday.

"For the strengthening and development of our armed forces, let us all double our efforts and do more for the prosperous development of the socialist motherland," he said during a speech at a banquet, accompanied by his wife and daughter, according to state news agency KCNA.

He spoke a day after pledging to expand military drills and beef up the nuclear-armed country's war readiness posture.

North Korea carries out nighttime parade to celebrate army anniversary: Report

The "spy balloon" conundrum has gripped the world, and the politics over it is far from over. Now, South Korea has claimed to have tracked a North Korean balloon over its territory. The South Korean military on Monday (February 6) said it had tracked the balloon, however, it did not pose a threat.

The Ministry of Defense said in a statement that the balloon briefly entered South Korean airspace on Sunday. The military further added that they took unspecified "measures".

Citing a high-level military source, South Korean broadcaster KBS reported that the balloon was detected by a front-line unit through a thermal observation device at around 6:30pm (local time) on Sunday in Yeoncheon, Gyeonggi Province, a region near the inter-Korean border.

In a report by NK News, it was mentioned that the South Korean military identified that it was a weather balloon and that it flew at a low altitude.

The rogue nation of North Korea stole more cryptocurrency assets in 2022 than any other year, a recent report by United Nations has revealed. Most of the money stolen was used to support its ballistic missile and weapons of mass destruction programmes.

The rogue nation of North Korea stole more cryptocurrency assets in 2022 than any other year, a recent report by United Nations has revealed. Most of the money stolen was used to support its ballistic missile and weapons of mass destruction programmes. The report asserted North Korea-linked hackers stole virtual assets worth $630 million while its cyber currency heist stood at a whopping $1 billion. "(North Korea) used increasingly sophisticated cyber techniques both to gain access to digital networks involved in cyber finance and to steal information of potential value, including to its weapons programmes," read the UN report. "A higher value of cryptocurrency assets was stolen by DPRK actors in 2022 than in any previous year," added the report which was submitted to the 15-member North Korea sanctions committee. Gravitas Plus: How does North Korea finance its missile tests? × Ostracised by most countries across the globe, North Korea is a pariah state where the authoritarian regime of Kim Jong Un uses almost all the revenue for its missile programmes instead of public welfare. However, with no major avenue available to bring in the money, stealing cryptocurrency and virtual assets has emerged as a promising option over the years. Earlier this year, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) informed that North Korean actors were behind the $100 million heist at crypto firm Harmony's Horizon bridge that took place in June 2022. Read more: North Korea behind crypto heist that happened in June last year: FBI In December 2022, South Korean intelligence agencies said North Korean hackers had stolen an estimated $1.2 billion in bitcoin and other virtual assets over the previous five years, with more than half of it happening in the said calendar year. Despite the hefty sanctions imposed by several countries as well as the UN, North Korea's missile programme has continued unabated. Last year, the country fired a record number of ballistic missiles, comfortably overtaking its combined tally of four and eight missiles tested in 2020 and 2021 respectively. N Korea broke all records when it fired as many as 23 missiles in a single day. (With inputs from agencies) WATCH WION LIVE HERE:
