"It also appears to contain a warning message regarding the large-scale South Korea-US joint exercises scheduled for August," Yang said.

Inter-Korean relations are at one of their lowest points in years, with Pyongyang declaring South Korea its "principal enemy". &nbsp;

It has jettisoned agencies dedicated to reunification and threatened war over "even 0.001 mm" of territorial infringement.

She claims that once the pretty girls are selected,&nbsp;they are made to go through a virginity test. This, the report claimed, is a detailed medical examination where "even the smallest defect" like a minor scar, leads to disqualification.

The "handful of girls from all around North Korea" who clear all the tests are then sent to Pyongyang where they join the so-called pleasure squad and their "only reason to exist is to please the dictator".

She further revealed that the 'Pleasure Squad' is divided into three:&nbsp;one part is trained in massages, and the second specialises in entertaining through song and dance. The third division is the "sexual activities division," and has to be "sexually intimate with the dictator, and other men," said Park.

However, satellite imagery of Pyongyang, last week, showed that the 30 metre-tall and 61.5- metre&nbsp;wide symbol was no longer there, according to a report by NK News, an online outlet that monitors North Korea.

The American website in its report also stressed that the images are ‘hazy’ at best and one snapshot was taken Tuesday (Jan 23) by an inter-Korean rail crossing at Kaesong did not clearly show any construction crews. Therefore, a higher-definition picture is needed to be certain that the monument has in fact disappeared.&nbsp;

The arch was unveiled a year after the 2000 inter-Korea summit between Kim’s father North Korean leader Kim Jong-il, and former South Korean President Kim Dae-jung. The summit resulted in a joint declaration, in which both countries agreed to pursue reunification through peaceful means.

The 30-metre-tall monument was symbolic of the three charters – self-reliance, peace and national cooperation, according to South Korean government records. The arch symbolised reunification plans through diplomacy put forward by Kim’s father.&nbsp;

Since Kim Jong Un’s grandfather, Kim Il-Sung took over the premiership of the newly formed Democratic People’s Republic of Korea &nbsp;(DPRK), North Korea’s official name, in 1948, he had hoped to reunify with South Korea. However, he took a different approach.&nbsp;

Kim Il-Sung unlike his son tried to reunify Korea by force and launched an invasion of South Korea triggering the Korean War, which ended in a stalemate three years later.&nbsp;

<h2>Rise in tensions between the two Koreas</h2>

Earlier this month, in a speech at North Korea’s rubber-stamp parliament, Kim called for the country’s constitution to be changed to ensure that South Korea is defined as “the most hostile state,” reported the state media KCNA.&nbsp;

According to Kim, the constitution should be amended to educate North Koreans that South Korea is a “primary foe and invariable principal enemy”.&nbsp;

During the same speech, on January 15, he had also called the massive monument that his father constructed in Pyongyang an “eyesore” and vowed to get rid of it.&nbsp;

It was around the same time that North Korea had abolished agencies that oversaw cooperation and reunification, indicating that Kim was no longer interested in seeking reconciliation with South Korea.&nbsp;

Additionally, three organisations dealing with unification and inter-Korean tourism were also shut down, the state media had reported, earlier this month. On January 15, Kim said Pyongyang would not recognise the two countries’ de facto maritime border, the Northern Limit Line (NLL).&nbsp;

Last year, in April, the South Korean Unification Ministry said that North Korea had not responded to their regularly held calls, adding that this is the first time since October 2021 that all inter-Korean military lines or liaison calls have stopped for more than a day.&nbsp;

The communication lines were first opened in 2018 when the two countries set up hotlines after a series of summits aimed at decreasing tensions in the region. However, it was not the first time that North Korea unilaterally shut down the communications links in a display of anger.

The line was restored in July 2021 following North Korea’s shutdown for nearly a year after its anger over South Korean activists sending leaflets critical of Kim’s regime across the border by balloon.&nbsp;

It also seems like it is going to be more of the same in 2024, as within the first month of the year, North Korea has already tested a number of missiles, including a cruise missile dubbed Pulhwasal-3-3, on January 24 and again on January 28.&nbsp;

This was after North Korea had fired more than 200 artillery rounds near a disputed maritime border with South Korea prompting Seoul to take “corresponding” action with live fire drills. The exchange prompted the evacuation of nearly 2,000 residents of two remote South Korean islands to bomb shelters.&nbsp;

Therefore, by reportedly removing the Arch of Reunification ‘the history of inter-Korean relations was completely denied’ and the ‘geopolitical risks’ to South Korea will continue to rise, analysts added.

"And that in the frontline of anti-imperialism and independence, I will always be standing with Russia, I’m using this opportunity to make it clear," the North Korean leader said.

Regarding arms deal, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov told reporters that the dialogue also centred on defence cooperation, but did not provide any further information.

Putin assures to build satellites for North Korea, Kim supports ‘sacred battle’ with West

As per a newly released United States intelligence, Russia and North Korea are “actively advancing” potential arms deal negotiations that would provide significant ammunition for various types of weapons systems, including artillery. 
 
On Wednesday (August 30), the government of Joe Biden said that they have been concerned about the two pariah states which are in the middle of arms negotiations and that after the trip of Russian Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu to North Korea last month, Russia's second delegation of officials visited Pyongyang to further discuss a potential deal. 
 
Along with the second delegation, letters were exchanged between Russian President Vladimir Putin and North Korean leader Kim Jong, in which the two leaders are “pledging to increase their bilateral cooperation,” as reported by National Security Council strategic communications co-ordinator John Kirby.

“Under these potential deals, Russia would receive significant quantities and multiple types of munitions from the DPRK, which the Russian military plans to use in Ukraine. These potential deals could also include the provision of raw materials that would assist Russia’s defence industrial base,” Kirby stated, further promising that the US will take direct action for sanctioning any entities that are involved in a potential deal and appealed Pyongyang to cease the negotiations.

<h2>Letters exchanged were more at the surface level</h2>

He stated that the letters were “more at the surface level” but that North Korean and Russian weapons sales were advancing. The letters were exchanged by the leaders following the visit of Shoigu, he stated.

Kim Yo Jong, sister of North Korea's leader Kim Jong Un, issued a warning to the United States after Pyongyang said that it scrambled warplanes to ward off an American spy plane that&nbsp;had intruded in its exclusive economic zone.

Pyongyang accused the US air force of illegal intrusion stating that their drones and spy planes flew along its coasts for eight straight days, and the aircraft repeatedly violated the North Korean&nbsp;airspace.&nbsp;

"While the key components of the Sohae complex have been undergoing modernisation and expansion over the past year, this uptick in activity suggests a new level of urgency in making the site ready to accommodate satellite launches," the report stated.&nbsp;

The new launch pad is likely to feature a &nbsp;rail-mounted assembly structure which is likely to be used for lifting a rocket into place, a tunnel for funnelling flames away and lighting towers.&nbsp;

If the launch pad will be used to service liquid-fuelled rockets, then the structure will most likely need additional infrastructure, added the report.&nbsp;

At the main launch pad of Sohae, crews appear to have made modifications to the gantry tower, while they continue to work on a storage for fuel and oxidizer.

A new area, from where VIPs are likely to observe launches has also been reportedly completed, stated 38 North.&nbsp;

Analysts stated that the military satellite will be part of the efforts of the nuclear-armed state to enhance surveillance technology, which includes drones as well as improve its ability to hit targets during conflicts.&nbsp;

Several attempts have been made by North Korea to launch "earth observation" satellites among which two have been placed successfully in orbit, the last one happening in 2016.

International observers stated that the satellite appeared to be under control, however, there was lingering debate over whether any transmissions were sent by them.&nbsp;

British American Tobacco (BAT) was ordered to pay $635 million&nbsp;plus interest to US authorities, after admitting selling cigarettes to North Korea in breach of sanctions via a subsidiary.

The payment, according to US authorities, was linked to BAT activities in North Korea between 2007 and 2017, reported the BBC.&nbsp;

Jack Bowles, the CEO of BAT, said, "We deeply regret the misconduct."&nbsp;As a result of North Korea's nuclear and ballistic missile programmes, the US has imposed harsh sanctions on the country.

BAT and the US Department of Justice (DOJ) and Treasury Department's Office of Foreign Assets Control reached a settlement on Tuesday.

One of the top 10 largest firms in the UK and one of the biggest tobacco giants in the world is BAT. Major cigarette brands owned by this company include Lucky Strike, Dunhill, and Pall Mall.

In a statement, BAT said it had entered into a "deferred prosecution agreement with DOJ and a civil settlement agreement with OFAC, and an indirect BAT subsidiary in Singapore has entered into a plea agreement with DOJ".

According to the DOJ, BAT also planned to deceive financial institutions into processing transactions on behalf of North Korean entities&nbsp;by defrauding them.

Kim Jong Un, the leader of North Korea, is a well-known routine smoker. The US tried to get the UN Security Council to forbid the export of tobacco to North Korea last year, but Russia and China blocked the proposal.

The settlement was the "culmination of a long-running investigation," according to Matthew Olsen, assistant attorney general for the DOJ, who also called it "the single largest North Korean sanctions penalty in the history of the Department of Justice."

He said that BAT was engaged in an "elaborate scheme to circumvent US sanctions and sell tobacco products to North Korea" via subsidiaries.

"Between 2007 and 2017 these third-party companies sold tobacco products to North Korea and received approximately $428m."

Sim Hyon-Sop, a 39-year-old banker from North Korea, and Qin Guoming, 60, and Han Linlin, 41, two Chinese intermediaries, were also named in criminal complaints for aiding the sale of tobacco to North Korea.

In addition to $500,000 in&nbsp;incentives for each of the other two suspects, a $5 million&nbsp;bounty was placed for any information that resulted in the capture or conviction of Sim.

They were charged with forging paperwork to deceive US banks into completing transactions totaling $74 million and purchasing leaf tobacco for North Korea's state-owned cigarette manufacturers. These agreements brought in around $700 million for North Korean enterprises, including one run by the military.

Yoon’s office has denied foiling the move, saying the agencies were still discussing the situation and it had not played any role.

Reports claim that Seoul's power corridors are hearing the debate over whether to provide former president Moon Jae-in with monthly subsidies totaling 2.5m won (£1,565) or not.&nbsp;

On Thursday, United States Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin met with his South Korean counterpart, Lee Jong-sup and released a joint communique which said that any nuclear attack against Washington or its allies would “result in the end of the Kim regime.” This comes after a number of missile tests conducted by the North Korean government over the last two days.&nbsp;

In a joint communique released by the Defense Department, Austin said, “Any nuclear attack against the United States or its Allies and partners, including the use of non-strategic nuclear weapons, is unacceptable and will result in the end of the Kim regime.”
