The West African region is has been on a brink of widespread violence ever since the coup of Niger and it seems that the fighting has begun in Niger. Local media reports have suggested that Niger has sent troops to its border and Nigeria as Ecowas forces have allegedly started gaining round in the region.

On July 26, Niger witnessed a military coup for the fifth time since the country gained independence from France in the 1960s.

On that day, the presidential guards detained President Mohamed Bazoum, and commander General Abdourahamane Tchiani proclaimed himself the leader of a new military junta.

In a televised address, soldiers announced that they had removed the president from power, seized control of the government and suspended the constitution.

The coup leaders justified their actions by claiming that it was in response to the “continuing deterioration of the security situation”, adding that the president’s measures did not go far enough to protect Niger.

The putschists also pointed to the country’s collapsing economic position as another reason.

They also closed the country’s borders and suspended all institutions of the republic, and announced a national curfew. The soldiers warned against any foreign intervention.

The apparent coup was said to be led by the head of a regional political and security group.

Apart from the international players like Russia and the United States, the regional bloc ECOWAS or the Economic Community of West African States has been playing an active role.

The ECOWAS threatened to intervene militarily if the coup leaders fail to restore constitutional order. It had also given the Niger military junta a deadline to adhere to its demands, but it did not yield any desired results.

Following this, ECOWAS said it has activated the 'standby force' to "restore constitutional order" in Niger.

It said that its intervention aims to bring back ousted President Mohamed Bazoum to rule Niger.

The Niger junta, in response, reportedly issued a call for volunteers to resist ECOWAS "invaders".

<h2>What is ECOWAS?</h2>

Established in 1975 through the Lagos Treaty, ECOWAS’s aim is to promote economic integration among its members through a single common currency and create a single trading bloc in areas of industry, transport, telecommunications, energy, financial issues, and social and cultural matters.

According to its website, the vision of ECOWAS is the creation of a “borderless region” that is well-integrated.

“ECOWAS is meant to be a region governed in accordance with the principles of democracy, rule of law and good governance,” it states.

At the helm of its organisation structure is the Chairman of the Authority of Heads of State and Government. The Chairman is the current Head of State and Government and is appointed by other Heads of State and Government to oversee its affairs for one year.

It has 15 members: Benin, Burkina Faso, Cape Verde, Cote d’ Ivoire, The Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea Bissau, Liberia, Mali, Niger, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Senegal and Togo. Around 400 million people live in this region.

However, Mali, Guinea and Burkina Faso, were suspended after the civilian government was overthrown and the ECOWAS leaders refused to recognise their new governments.

<h2>Role of ECOWAS </h2>

Apart from their stated goals of economic cooperation, ECOWAS has been busy in attempting to prevent military conflicts in the region.

AP news agency states that ECOWAS operated as a regional peacekeeping operation known as ECOMOG, led by Nigeria in the 1990s and early 2000s, in Liberia when forces were first deployed in 1990 during the deadly civil war and in Sierra Leone in 1997 when a democratically elected government was overthrown.

In 2017, it intervened in Gambia after longtime president Yahya Jammeh refused to step down after losing the elections which eventually led to the winner Adama Burrow coming to power. It has sent its troops to other countries but never to Niger.

Notably, Niger coup’s leader Gen. Tchiani has previously served as battalion commander for ECOWAS peacekeepers in Ivory Coast after a ceasefire between government and rebel forces in 2003.

<h2>What will happen next?</h2>

For all intents and purposes, ECOWAS leaders plan to intervene militarily, though Niger putschists have said that they will give an apt response.

ECOWAS had set a&nbsp;deadline for mutinous soldiers to release and reinstate President Mohamed Bazoum earlier this month.

But the junta leaders didn’t toe the line, following which the military chiefs from West African states on Thursday began two days of discussions in Ghana's capital&nbsp;of Accra about the ongoing crisis in&nbsp;Niger.

West African regional bloc&nbsp;ECOWAS&nbsp;said the meeting&nbsp;was being held "to finalize plans for the deployment of the Standby Force."

"Democracy is what we stand for and it's what we encourage," Nigeria's Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Gwabin Musa, told the meeting.&nbsp;

"The focus of our gathering is not simply to react to events, but to proactively chart a course that results in peace and promotes stability," he added.

He listed past ECOWAS deployments in Gambia, Liberia and elsewhere as examples of readiness.

“If push comes to shove we are going into Niger with our own contingents and equipment and our own resources to make sure we restore constitutional order. If other democratic partners want to support us they are welcome,” he said.

Supporters of the Nigerien military junta are raising calls for a mass mobilisation of citizens against a potential military action by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) which favours the restoration of Mohamed Bazoum, the president of Niger deposed recently by the military junta.

The Guardian reported that the call for mobilisation of people was pushed by one of the civic society groups in the Nigerian capital Niamey. This group has come out in support of the coup. It has been tapped by the mutinous officers to whip up support for the coup and even to organise mass demonstrations.

Volunteers for the Defence of Niger, the civic society group, is now seeking tens of thousands of volunteers from across Niger to support the military junta.&nbsp;

“It’s an eventuality. We need to be ready whenever it happens,” said Amsarou Bako, one of the founders of the group. He was quoted by Associated Press.

The ministry added that another 20 soldiers had been wounded, six of them seriously. All the casualties have been evacuated to the capital Niamey.

Africa's Sahel region, which includes Niger, has witnessed Jihadist insurgency for more than a decade. The insurgency first broke out in northern Mali in 2012. It spread to neighbouring Niger and Burkina Faso in 2015.

The coup leaders have dissolved the elected government. The coup in Niger is a seventh coup in West and Central Africa in three years.

There was no firm decision from the ECOWAS parliament on Saturday, and it set up a committee which plans to meet Nigerian President Bola Tinubu.&nbsp;

President Tinubu holds the bloc's revolving chairmanship. ECOWAS spokesperson said that the bloc wants to meet Tinubu to take his permission to go to Niger.

Niger coup leaders are headed by General &nbsp;Abdourahamane Tiani. They have so far rebuffed ECOWAS' diplomatic efforts, even those of the US. This has raised fears of further conflict in the impoverished Sahel region in Africa which is already combating Islamist insurgency.

With diplomacy faltering, ECOWAS has activated a standby military force they say will be deployed as a last resort if talks fail.

Along with fate of Niger, the crisis also puts at stake influence of rival global powers who have strategic interest in the region.

To add to this, Russian influence has increased as insecurity increases, democracy erodes, and leaders seek new partners to restore order.

Western powers fear Russia's clout could increase if the junta in Niger follows neighbouring Mali and Burkina Faso, which ejected the troops of former colonial power France after coups in those countries.

ECOWAS continues diplomacy with Niger junta, but keeps forces on standby

Niger's detained president Mohamed Bazoum&nbsp;was seen by his doctor on Saturday amid rising concerns for his health condition, said his entourage.&nbsp;

63-year-old, Mohamed Bazoum was overthrown on July 26 by his presidential guard which has since held him and his family in detention at his official residence in the capital Niamey.

The European Union, the African Union and the United Nations joined others in raising concerns for Bazoum after reports describing deteriorating detention conditions emerged on Friday.

As per news agency AFP reports, a member of his entourage told that Bazoum "had a visit by his doctor today", further adding that the physician had also brought food for Bazoum, his wife and son. "He's fine, given the situation," the source added.

Earlier this week, Human Rights Watch said that it spoke with Bazoum. The ousted leader described the treatment meted to&nbsp;him, his wife and their unwell 20-year-old son as "inhuman and cruel", said HRW.

"I'm not allowed to receive my family members (or) my friends who have been bringing food and other supplies to us," the group quoted him as saying.

"My son is sick, has a serious heart condition, and needs to see a doctor," he was quoted as saying. "They've refused to let him get medical treatment."

UN rights chief Volker Turk on Friday said Bazoum's reported detention conditions "could amount to inhuman and degrading treatment, in violation of international human rights law".

Top United States diplomat Antony Blinken said that he was "dismayed" by the military's refusal to release Bazoum's family as a "demonstration of goodwill".

Last week, CNN reported that Bazoum was being kept secluded and was forced to eat dry rice and pasta by the ones who toppled him.

During a meeting with US Under Secretary of State Victoria Nuland, the Niger military leaders said they would kill Bazoum if the West African bloc ECOWAS uses any military force, news agency AP citing two Western officials reported on Thursday (Aug 10).

The report comes hours after the 15-member Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) reiterated its earlier threat and ordered the activation of its standby force.

AP news agency citing two Western officials reported on Thursday (Aug 10) that during a meeting with US Under Secretary of State Victoria Nuland, the Niger military leaders said they would kill Bazoum if the West African bloc ECOWAS uses any military force.

The report from AP comes hours after the 15-member Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) reiterated its earlier threat and ordered the activation of its standby force.

Bazoum, who was deposed on July 26, is being held hostage at his residence.

After the conclusion of the meeting, an official communique was issued which mentioned a resolution asking the bloc’s defence chiefs to “activate the ECOWAS Standby Force with all its elements immediately”.

The meeting comes days after Niger’s coup leaders appointed a new interim government.

Media reports mentioned that in the capital city of Niamey, demonstrators were seen with Russian flags. Across West Africa, support for Russia has seen a rise amid anti-French sentiment.&nbsp;

News agency Reuters reported a story of Nigerien tailor Yahaya Oumarou, who is busy making those flags that have gained attraction globally.&nbsp;

It is similar to pro-Russian sentiments following previous military takeovers in other West African countries, alarming the West who see it as a symbol of their influence slipping out of the hands of some long-standing regional partners.&nbsp;

As quoted, Oumarou said: "This is a Russian flag I'm sewing right now. Lately, people have been coming to my workshop to make flags for Niger, Mali, Burkina Faso and Guinea. On the day of the rally at the national stadium, for example, many people came to sew flags - but especially from Russia."&nbsp;

Fabric vendor, Dedeya Alhassane, told the news agency: "Over the past few days, I've been selling fabrics in the colours of Russia. Traders and people from the city are buying these fabrics."&nbsp;

Alhassane said that he can't estimate how much fabric has been sold lately, but when a product is easy to buy, it becomes difficult to stock very early on.&nbsp;

US State Secretary Antony Blinken has claimed that Russian mercenary group Wagner is “taking advantage” of instability that has risen out of the coup in Niger.

There have been several media reports and also claims from ousted President Mohamed Bazoum that the military junta is being supported by the Wagner group.

Speaking to BBC on Tuesday (Aug 8), Blinken said he believes that the coup did not take place at the behest of either Russia or Wagner.

"I think what happened, and what continues to happen in Niger was not instigated by Russia or by Wagner, but... they tried to take advantage of it. Every single place that this Wagner group has gone, death, destruction and exploitation have followed," Blinken was quoted as saying. He added, “Insecurity has gone up, not down.”

It is estimated that around 5,000 Wagner troops are stationed across Africa. In 2021, they were deployed to neighbouring Mali following the breakdown of diplomatic talks with France.

The group's fighters have been accused of widespread human rights abuses in several African countries.

"With an open invitation from the coup plotters and their regional allies, the entire central Sahel region could fall to Russian influence via the Wagner Group, whose brutal terrorism has been on full display in Ukraine," he wrote.

On Tuesday, Wagner chief Yevgeny Prigozhin asked the coup leaders to "give us a call" in a voice message uploaded to Telegram, reports BBC.

Meanwhile, the West African country continues to be slapped with sanctions following efforts to restore constitutional order in the aftermath of the July 26 coup.

On Tuesday, Nigerian President Bola Tinubu ordered the new sanctions through Nigeria's central bank, aimed at squeezing those involved in the takeover, a presidential spokesperson said.

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) had set Sunday midnight as purported deadline to reinstate ousted President Mohamed Bazoum and threatened the use of force after the deadline lapsed.

Earlier, Niger's coup leaders have closed the country's airspace until further notice, citing the threat of military intervention from its neighbours who form ECOWAS bloc.

At the same time, Niger’s armed forces have been bringing in reinforcements to the capital Niamey to prepare for a potential military intervention, CNN reported.&nbsp;

The report said that a convoy of about 40 pick-up trucks arrived on Sunday evening that brought in troops from other parts of the country in a purported effort to reassure a nervous public and prepare for potential battle.

The defence chiefs of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) — excluding Mali, Burkina Faso, Chad, Guinea and Niger — gathered in Abuja, Nigeria, on Friday to discuss several measures.

Under the plan, the final decision on the modalities of the intervention has been left with the political leaders to decide, Abdel-Fatau Musah, ECOWAS commissioner for political affairs, peace and security, said.

"All the elements that will go into any eventual intervention have been worked out here, including the resources needed, the how and when we are going deploy the force," he said at the close of a three-day meeting in Nigeria's capital Abuja, reports Reuters news agency.

Musa did not say if the ECOWAS would deploy troops to the coup-hit country, but he reiterated their earlier demand to reinstate Bazoum in the coming days or “we will make them handover to the civilian authorities.”

The military junta had already asserted that it would fight back against any interference in their internal matters.

General Abdourahamane Tiani—the 59-year-old coup leader who served as battalion commander for ECOWAS forces during conflicts in Ivory Coast in 2003—has already received support from Mali and Burkina Faso.

The junta has cited persistent insecurity as its main justification for seizing power.

West African military chiefs have acquiesced on&nbsp;a plan for a possible intervention in Niger as a deadline for the country's junta to restore civilian rule approaches, an official from regional bloc the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) said Friday.

On Sunday, ECOWAS&nbsp;gave the junta, that toppled the democratically elected government of President Mohamed Bazoum in a military coup, a week to either restore him or face the potential use of force.

ECOWAS military chiefs were meeting in Nigeria's capital Abuja to discuss ways to respond to the crisis.

"All the elements that will go into any eventual intervention have been worked out, including the resources needed, and including the how and when we are going deploy the force," said ECOWAS commissioner Abdel-Fatau Musah.

The two refused to apply the "illegal, illegitimate and inhumane sanctions against the people and authorities of Niger".
