As ECOWAS prepares for military intervention, Niger coup leaders threaten to kill ousted prez Bazoum

Two weeks since the Niger coup, where are things headed? Will there be a war in West Africa? Will an intervention by ECOWAS really help? Molly Gambhir brings you a report.

Gravitas: Niger Coup: Will there be war?

<p>Just a few days after the change of regime in Niger, pro-coup protesters were seen waving the Russian flag as they staged demonstrations in the streets of the crisis-hit nation. Media reports mentioned that in the capital city of Niamey, demonstrators were seen with Russian flags. Across West Africa, support for Russia has seen a rise amid anti-French sentiment.&nbsp;</p>

<p>News agency Reuters reported a story of Nigerien tailor Yahaya Oumarou, who is busy making those flags that have gained attraction globally.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The report says&nbsp;that the flags have been in high demand since President Mohamed Bazoum was deposed in a military coup late last month. The coup led to some Russian supporters among crowds celebrating it.&nbsp;</p>

<p>It is similar to pro-Russian sentiments following previous military takeovers in other West African countries, alarming the West who see it as a symbol of their influence slipping out of the hands of some long-standing regional partners.&nbsp;</p>

<p>As quoted, Oumarou said: "This is a Russian flag I'm sewing right now. Lately, people have been coming to my workshop to make flags for Niger, Mali, Burkina Faso and Guinea. On the day of the rally at the national stadium, for example, many people came to sew flags - but especially from Russia."&nbsp;</p>

Niger coup: This tailor in Niamey is busy sewing Russian flags

Niger has announced a new government, this after West-African bloc, Ecowas, has gathered for a key summit to discuss the course of action to intervene in Niger's political crisis.

Niger military junta seems reluctant to step down. The military is resisting pressure from the US and the UN. As the coup leaders refuse to come to the negotiating table.

Niger coup: West is supporting ECOWAS. Will Russia make a move in Niger like it did in Mali?

<p>US State Secretary Antony Blinken has claimed that Russian mercenary group Wagner is “taking advantage” of instability that has risen out of the coup in Niger.</p>

<p>There have been several media reports and also claims from ousted President Mohamed Bazoum that the military junta is being supported by the Wagner group.</p>

<p>Speaking to BBC on Tuesday (Aug 8), Blinken said he believes that the coup did not take place at the behest of either Russia or Wagner.</p>

<p>"I think what happened, and what continues to happen in Niger was not instigated by Russia or by Wagner, but... they tried to take advantage of it. Every single place that this Wagner group has gone, death, destruction and exploitation have followed," Blinken was quoted as saying. He added, “Insecurity has gone up, not down.”</p>

<p>It is estimated that around 5,000 Wagner troops are stationed across Africa. In 2021, they were deployed to neighbouring Mali following the breakdown of diplomatic talks with France.</p>

<p>The group's fighters have been accused of widespread human rights abuses in several African countries.</p>

Niger’s ousted President Mohamed Bazou has sought help from the United States and “entire world community” to help restore constitutional order" in the coup-hit country.

Niger’s ousted President Mohamed Bazou has sought help from the United States and “entire world community” to help restore constitutional order" in the coup-hit country. In an opinion piece in the Washington Post, Bazoum said he was writing "as a hostage". He warned that if the coup succeeds, it would have "devastating consequences for our country, our region and the entire world". "Fighting for our shared values, including democratic pluralism and respect for the rule of law, is the only way to make sustainable progress against poverty and terrorism," Bazoum wrote. "The Nigerien people will never forget your support at this pivotal moment in our history." Bazoum also highlighted the military junta’s ties to the Russian mercenary group Wagner, which operates elsewhere in the region and said that it is exercising a malign influence in Niger. "The entire central Sahel region could fall to Russian influence via the Wagner group, whose brutal terrorism has been on full display in Ukraine," wrote Bazoum. Niger coup: Ecowas threatens use of force on coup leaders There have been anti-France demonstrations in the West African country, which was once a colony of France, and growing pro-Russian supporters in the country. On Thursday, thousands of people hit the streets of the capital Niamey city in support of the coup while criticising other West African countries for imposing financial and trade sanctions on Niger. So far there has been no indication that Wagner group is involved in the last week’s coup, but Wagner's leader has reportedly described the coup as a triumph, according to BBC. Military junta withdraws envoys in four countries Meanwhile, the recently installed military junta on Thursday (Aug 3) announced that they are withdrawing the country's ambassadors from France, the US, Nigeria and Togo. In a statement read out on national television, they said the functions of the four ambassadors had been "terminated". Scraps military pact with France Moreover, it also announced the scrapping of military pacts made between Niger and France. "Faced with France's careless attitude and its reaction to the situation, the National Council for the Safeguard of the Homeland decided to scrap the cooperation agreements in the field of security and defence with this state," one of the putschists said in a statement read out on television late on Thursday. Morning brief: US partially evacuates Niger embassy, Internet ban extended in India's Haryana, and more

A military coup took place on July 26th in Niger. The military took power and Niger’s president Mohamed Bazoum, who was a staunch ally of the West was ousted. While the west is aghast - not everyone is hostile to the coup in Niger. Amid a rising Russia sentiment in the region, Junta led Burkina Faso and Mali have declared that any foreign military intervention in Niger against coup leaders would be considered a declaration of war against them, too.

Will the coup in Uranium-rich Niger drive France & Europe into a deep energy crisis?

Niger remains on the edge days after a military coup shook the African nation. The ousted President Bazoum met with Chad's President.
