<p>"The entire central Sahel region could fall to Russian influence via the Wagner group, whose brutal terrorism has been on full display in Ukraine," wrote Bazoum.</p>

<p>Moreover, it also announced the scrapping of military pacts made between Niger and France.</p>

<p>"Faced with France's careless attitude and its reaction to the situation, the National Council for the Safeguard of the Homeland decided to scrap the cooperation agreements in the field of security and defence with this state," one of the putschists said in a statement read out on television late on Thursday.</p>

<p>The coup leaders also said that they would respond immediately to any "aggression or attempted aggression" against it by West African countries, three days before the expiry of an ultimatum to restore order given by the regional bloc Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).</p>

<p>The State Department released an advisory stating that even though the mission will remain open and senior leadership will continue from there, the non-emergency staff was being temporarily evacuated.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"On August 2, 2023, the Department ordered the departure of non-emergency US government employees and eligible family members from Embassy Niamey," an updated US travel advisory for Niger said.</p>

<p>"The US Embassy in Niamey has temporarily reduced its personnel, suspended routine services, and is only able to provide emergency assistance to US citizens in Niger," the advisory added.</p>

<p>State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller said the US remained committed to their relationship with the people of Niger and to Nigerien democracy and that Washington remained diplomatically engaged. Miller, however, condemned the military coup.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"The United States rejects all efforts to overturn Niger's constitutional order, and stands with the people of Niger...in support of democratic governance and respect for the rule of law and human rights."</p>

<p>Currently, there are about 1,000 troops stationed in Niger, operating from two bases and helping ousted President Mohamed Bazoum&nbsp;combat against the military.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>

France planning evacuation of nationals from Niger amidst protests

<p>Niger’s military leaders who carried out the recent coup have claimed that the toppled government of Mohamed Bazoum has authorised France to carry out a military intervention at the presidential palace and free the ousted president.</p>

<p>"In its search for ways and means to intervene militarily in Niger, France with the complicity of some Nigeriens, held a meeting with the chief of staff of the Nigerien national guard to obtain the necessary political and military authorisation needed," said a statement by the military junta that was read out on national television, according to AFP news agency.</p>

<p>Niger was a French colony for more than 50 years before its independence in 1960. Diplomatic ties between the two countries were strong before the last week’s putsch.</p>

<h2><strong>Macron vows immediate action</strong></h2>

<p>Though France hasn’t declared that it will carry out any military attacks, President Emmanuel Macron on Sunday vowed "immediate" action if French citizens or interests were attacked in Niger.</p>

<p>On Monday, the French foreign ministry while responding to the allegations denied that it was intervening militarily in the West African nation.</p>

'It's time for action': West African leaders threaten intervention in Niger if coup is not reversed in a week

<p>The African Union released a statement on Saturday demanding Niger's military to "return to their barracks and restore constitutional authority" within 15 days as the European Union exerted more&nbsp;pressure on the coup leaders by discontinuing security cooperation with the country.</p>

<p>The head of Niger's presidential guard, General Abdourahamane Tiani, on Friday, appeared on state television to declare himself the country's new leader.&nbsp;</p>

<p>He further defended the military coup, reiterating that the soldiers in the country had acted to safeguard national security.</p>

<p>On Wednesday, the guard detained President Mohamed Bazoum in the presidential palace. Later, a group of officers appeared on state television and said that they had thrown Bazoum out of power.</p>

<p>The AU's Peace and Security Council, in a communique after a meeting on the coup on Friday, demanded, "military personnel to immediately and unconditionally return to their barracks and restore constitutional authority, within a maximum period of fifteen (15) days."</p>

<p>It condemned&nbsp;in the "strongest terms possible" the act to overthrow the elected government and also expressed deep concern over the "alarming resurgence" of military coups in Africa.</p>

<p>The European Union's diplomatic chief Josep Borrell on Saturday released a statement saying that the coalition would not recognise the putschists and further made the announcement of the suspension of security cooperation with Niger.</p>

<p>"The European Union does not recognise and will not recognise the authorities from the putsch in Niger," Borrell said in a statement.</p>

<p>"All cooperation in the security field is suspended indefinitely with immediate effect" in addition to the end to budgetary aid, he added.</p>

<p>Bazoum "remains the only legitimate president of Niger", the statement said, further calling for his immediate release and holding the coup leaders to account for the safety of him and his family.</p>

<p>Borrell said the EU was ready to back future decisions taken by West Africa's regional bloc, "including the adoption of sanctions".</p>

<p>Nigerian President Bola Tinubu released a statement saying that the leaders from the Economic Community of West African States will meet on Sunday in Abuja to have a discussion on the coup.</p>

<p>United States Secretary of State Antony Blinken extended steadfast support to Niger's ousted leader Mohamed Bazoum from Washington, and gave a warning to those detaining him that "hundreds of millions of dollars of assistance" was at risk, said the State Department on Friday (July 28).</p>

<p>Blinken called Bazoum for the second time in a few days to offer America's "unflagging support" after the leader was detained in a military coup, said department spokesman Matt Miller in a statement.</p>

<p>In another call to former Nigerien president Mahamadou Issoufou, Blinken expressed concern over the ongoing detention of Bazoum and that "negotiations to ensure constitutional order in Niger were at an impasse."</p>

<p>He said to Issoufou that he "regretted that those detaining Bazoum were threatening years of successful co-operation and hundreds of millions of dollars of assistance" to Niamey, and asked Issoufou to continue working on behalf of Bazoum, Miller said.</p>

The AU's Peace and Security Council, in a communique after a meeting on the coup on Friday, demanded, "military personnel to immediately and unconditionally return to their barracks and restore constitutional authority, within a maximum period of fifteen (15) days." It condemned in the "strongest terms possible" the act to overthrow the elected government and also expressed deep concern over the "alarming resurgence" of military coups in Africa. <p>Niger's military officers declared General Abdourahamane Tiani as the new head of state of the west African country on Friday. They said they had suspended the constitution and dissolved all former institutions after overthrowing President Mohamed Bazoum.</p>

<p>"We are not in contact with the military," Nicole Kouassi, the current top U.N. official in Niger, told reporters.</p>

<p>"Concerning the president, information we have from our political office is he seemed to be at his home and he seemed to be fine," she said. "The situation in the country is quite calm."</p>

<p>The United Nations has called for Bazoum to be released.</p>

<p>The United Nations has 1,600 staff in Niger - of which about 352 are international - and Kouassi said all were safe.</p>

<p>The United Nations says some 4.3 million people are in need of humanitarian help in Niger. In the country, more than 370,000 people are displaced internally. The country also hosts more than 250,000 refugees. These refugees are mainly from Nigeria, Mali and Burkina Faso.</p>

<p>The United Nations has made an appeal for USD 584 million in aid. But it is only 32 per cent funded.</p>

<p>"The humanitarian response continues on the ground and has never stopped, actually, since the events occurred in Niger," the U.N. World Food Programme official in Niger, Jean-Noel Gentile, told reporters.</p>

<p>Wagner Group mercenary boss Yevgeny Prigozhin, who remains active despite leading a failed mutiny against the Russian army's top brass last month, hailed Niger's military coup as good news and offered his fighters' services to bring order.</p>

<p>"As of now, no sign of Wagner from the UN perspective," said Kouassi.</p>
