Nick Kyrgios has apologised to a fan he accused of being "drunk out of her mind" during his loss in this year's Wimbledon final and donated 20,000 pounds ($22,750) to a charity of her choice following a legal case.

Kyrgios, well known for his outbursts, complained to the umpire during his match against Novak Djokovic in July, saying that the fan had been talking to him during points.

Asked by the umpire to identify the fan, Kyrgios said: "The one with the dress, the one who looks like she's had about 700 drinks, bro!"

Anna Palus said that the 27-year-old Australian had defamed her by making "a reckless and entirely baseless allegation" and began legal action in August, adding any damages she wins would be donated to charity.

Kyrgios apologised in a statement released to British media by Knight Temple Law, which represented Palus.

"I told the umpire that a fan, who I now know to be Anna Palus, was distracting me during the match, believing that she was drunk," Kyrgios said in the statement.

"I accept that belief was mistaken, and I apologise.

"To make amends, I have donated 20,000 pounds to the Great Ormond Street Hospital Charity, a charity chosen by Ms Palus. I will not be commenting on this matter again."

Defending champion Daniil Medvedev cruised into the fourth round of the U.S. Open with a straightforward 6-4 6-2 6-2 victory over Chinese qualifier Wu Yibing on Friday to set up a blockbuster clash with Australia's Nick Kyrgios.

Wu, who became the first Chinese man in U.S. Open history to reach the third round, was plagued by several unforced errors in the clash as Medvedev prevailed in an hour and 55 minutes.

After sealing a closely contested first set, Medvedev broke early to race ahead 5-1 in the next and closed it out in style to take full control of the contest.

The third set followed a similar pattern as Wu crumbled under the relentless pressure, with Medvedev staying on course to become the first player to win consecutive U.S. Open titles since Roger Federer's run of five between 2004 and 2008.

But a defeat to Kyrgios in the next round would see Medvedev lose his number one ranking to Rafa Nadal after the tournament.&nbsp;

"We've played great matches. All have been quite tight on the scoreboard," said Medvedev, who has lost three of his four previous meetings with Kyrgios, including the last one in Montreal less than a month ago.

"It's 3-1 to him but I'll try to do better this time and it'll be a great match for people to watch."

“I am not litigious, but after much consideration, I have concluded that I have no alternative but to instruct my solicitors Brett Wilson LLP to bring defamation proceedings against Mr Kyrgios in order to clear my name. The need to obtain vindication, and to prevent repetition of the allegation, are the only reasons for taking legal action," she added.

Australian Nick Kyrgios produced another extraordinary performance to demolish compatriot Alex de Minaur 6-2 6-3 at the Canadian Masters on Thursday, a day after stunning world number one Daniil Medvedev. 
 
The fiery Wimbledon finalist has been playing the best tennis of his career and is showing no signs of slowing down in Montreal, where he won the first four games of the opening set in which de Minaur won scarcely more than half of his first-serve points.

The pair traded breaks to open the second set but 27-year-old Kyrgios would not be denied, breaking de Minaur on the third try in the third game and again in the seventh. Kyrgios briefly appeared agitated when he gave up a break in the penultimate game but found his composure to get the job done in a little over an hour, breaking back to love in the final game.

The win will move Kyrgios high enough in the rankings to be seeded at the U.S. Open later this month. "I did what had to be done. Novak Djokovic and Nick Kyrgios played the Wimbledon final on Sunday (July 10) in London, England. Djokovic proved to be too good for the Australian as the Serbian romped past the 27-year-old in four sets -- 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, 7-6 (3) -- to win his 21st Grand Slam title.

After the match, Djokovic's interaction with Prince Williams and his family went viral. The Serbian met Prince Williams, his wife, and son George and handed over his Wimbledon trophy to the latter.&nbsp;

In Djokovic's meet-and-greet session with&nbsp;Prince William, the Serbian player was&nbsp;introduced to Prince's son. Djoko initially&nbsp;asked him about the match, “How did you like it?” To which, Prince George responded, "Great" and then was asked by the former world number one player to hold the trophy. Wimbledon finalist Nick Kyrgios is one match away from a first Grand Slam title but his brother, Christos, said on Sunday the Australian is already a champion in his family`s eyes after winning an off-court battle with his inner demons.

"Since he met his girlfriend Costeen, she`s helped open his eyes again. There was a lot of chaos in Nick`s life before he met her," he said.

"On Sunday night, I believe the rest of the world will get Nick Kyrgios the Wimbledon champion. For us, we`ve already got our baby brother back. Mum and Dad have got their son back.

"He is already a champion in all our eyes. Seeing him mature and evolve back into the happy fulfilled version of himself is all that I could have asked for ... I just want to see him winning in all aspects of life."

"I had a shocking sleep last night (Thursday), though, to be honest. I probably got an hour`s sleep just with everything, like the excitement. I had so much anxiety, I was already feeling so nervous, and I don`t feel nervous usually," Kyrgios was quoted as saying by atptour.com.

"I just know there`s a lot of people that want me to do well and give my best. But I had a shocking sleep last night. Hopefully I can get some sleep tonight.

Kyrgios, currently ranked No. 40 in the ATP rankings, believes his experience during this year`s Australian Open, where he and Thanasi Kokkinakis clinched the doubles title, had given him some confidence.

"You just have to ride the waves, roll with the punches in a grand slam. Like, you just don`t know. You really don`t know. You could be four points away from losing the tournament, then 11 days later you`re in the final. I just feel like I kind of just take it as it comes now more so than what I used to."

"It`s not the way I wanted to get to the final. As a competitor, I really did want that match. It was obviously something that as soon as I beat Garin, Rafa was a high possibility, someone I`ve had so many good battles with before. We`ve both taken a win against each other at this tournament. A statement from Australian Capital Territory Policing did not identify Kyrgios but The Canberra Times quoted the lawyer of the former world number 13 as saying that the charge was related to a "domestic relationship".

"ACT Policing can confirm a 27-year-old Watson man is scheduled to face the ACT Magistrates court on the 2nd of August in relation to one charge of common assault following an incident in December 2021," the police said.

Australian media said the charge was related to a complaint made by Kyrgios`s former partner Chiara Passari. 
"It`s in the context of a domestic relationship," Kyrgios`s barrister Jason Moffett was quoted as saying by The Canberra Times.

"The nature of the allegation is serious, and Mr Kyrgios takes the allegation very seriously. Given the matter is before the court... he doesn`t have a comment at this stage, but in the fullness of time we`ll issue a media release."
