In a major breakthrough, National Investigative Agency (NIA) on Friday arrested one accused in the Pulwama attack case and has been remanded to 15 days of the agency's custody for his detailed interrogation.

Shakir Bashir Magrey,&nbsp;an Over-Ground Worker (OGW) of the terrorist outfit Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) who is a resident of Hajibal, Kakapora, Pulwama was produced before the NIA Special Court at Jammu today and remanded to 15 days of NIA custody for his detailed interrogation.

"A furniture shop owner, Shakir Bashir Magrey provided shelter and other logistical assistance to the suicide-bomber Adil Ahmad Dar. He was introduced to Adil Ahmad Dar in mid-2018 by a Pakistani terrorist viz. Mohammad Umar Farooq and he became a full-time OGW of JeM. During his initial interrogation, he has disclosed that on several occasions, he collected and delivered arms, ammunition, cash and explosive material to the JeM terrorists including those involved in Pulwama attack," an official release said.

NIA said that Magrey has further revealed that he had harboured Adil Ahmad Dar and Pakistani terrorist Mohammad Umar Farooq in his house from late 2018 till the attack in February 2019, and assisted them in the preparation of the IED.

"His shop is located near Lethpora bridge, and as advised by Mohammad Umar, he started conducting reconnaissance of the movement of CRPF convoy on Jammu-Srinagar Highway in January 2019, and informed Mohammad Umar and Adil Ahmad Dar about it. Further, he was also involved in modifying the Maruti Eeco car and fitting the IED in it in early February, 2019," the release said.

"During investigations, the make, model and number of the car used in the attack was quickly ascertained by NIA to be a Maruti Eeco car through forensic examination of the tiny remnants of the car, which were seized from the spot during extended searches. This has been corroborated by accused Shakir Bashir Magrey," it said.

NIA said that the explosives used in the attack were determined to be Ammonium Nitrate, Nitro-Glycerin and RDX through forensic investigation.

"Investigation has also confirmed the identity of the suicide bomber to be Adil Ahmad Dar through DNA matching with that of his father," read the release.

"Other key terrorists involved in the attack have been found to be Muddasir Ahmad Khan, (JeM's Divisional Commander of South Kashmir killed in an operation by security forces on 11-03-2019) Pakistani terrorists viz. Muhammad Umar Farooq and IED expert Kamran, (both killed on 29-03-2019) the owner of the car viz. Sajjad Ahmad Bhat r/o Marhama, Anantnag (killed on 16-06-2019) and Qari Yassir, JeM`s Commander for Kashmir (killed on 25-01-2020)," it said.

The officials said NIA investigators grilled self-styled commander of the banned Hizbul Mujahideen terror group Syed Naveed Mushtaq Ahmed alias Naveed Babu, who was caught with Singh, about the funding of the organisation and the way they had been in touch with their masters in Pakistan.

The agency has stumbled upon "evidence" of terror financing through cross-LoC trade during Naveed Babu's questioning, they said.

The NIA had registered a case against unknown people in connection with the trade across the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir in 2016 and carried out raids at trade facilitation centres in Salamabad in Kashmir's Baramulla district and Chakan-da-bagh in Poonch district of Jammu.

During its probe in the past four years, the NIA had been unable to find the final beneficiary of the money received from traders, the officials said, adding that after Naveed's questioning the agency had got a vital link.

The officials said that some more people were likely to be picked up for questioning in the case as the probe in the DySP's case has brought the four-year-old case to focus.

Recently LoC trade organisation president Tanveer Ahmed Wani was arrested by the NIA and was being questioned.

The cross-LoC trade, started in 2008 as a confidence-building measure between India and Pakistan, was stopped in April last year by the Centre citing "funnelling of illegal weapons, narcotics and fake currency".

"The action has been taken after reports that the cross-LoC trade routes are being misused by Pakistan-based elements for funnelling illegal weapons, narcotics and fake currency, etc.," the government had said then.

The officials said that they did not rule out the possibility of arrested police officer Singh having knowledge about the funding pattern through trade as he had been associated with Naveed Babu for long.

Singh was arrested last month along with Naveed, Hizbul Mujahideen terrorist Rafi Ahmed Rather and Irfan Shafi Mir, who claims to be an advocate. He is at present in judicial custody.

The officials said that if need be Singh and others could be summoned in connection with the LoC trade case as well.

On January 16, after Ministry of Home Affairs' order, the NIA had registered a case and began investigations in connection with the arrest.

According to sources, Davinder was on the radar of security forces from quite some time.&nbsp;

In 2019, he took Hizb-ul-Mujahideen Commander Syed Naveed alias Babu to Jammu successfully where they stayed at Sidra area and later dropped him back as well. But the circumstances were different this time as a phone call was traced by the J&amp;K police which hinted at the movement of terrorists to the Jammu region.&nbsp;

The security forces are also seeing the CCTV footage taken from the Srinagar airport and have sent his mobile phone for the forensic investigation to get more clues. All this may open up more possible links of an officer with terrorists or accomplices.&nbsp;

NIA to investigate 'Bangladesh link' of arrested J&K police officer

NIA to investigate 'Bangladesh link' of accused DSP Devinder Singh

Jammu and Kashmir&nbsp;police on Wednesday said that it is recommending, the detained officer and currently suspended Davinder Singh to be sacked after he was arrested travelling with Hizbul terrorists.

Speaking at a press conference, Jammu and Kashmir DGP Dilbag Singh said, "we are recommending his sacking to the government."

"Cannot share right now what has been revealed during the interrogation." DGP also said.

On Sunday, Deputy Superintendent of Police&nbsp;Davinder Singh was arrested by Jammu and Kashmir police while he was travelling with&nbsp;two Hizbul terrorists.

According to reports, the investigation&nbsp;has been handed over to the National Investigation Agency.

Earlier in the day, NIA Director-General met Union Home secretary Ajay Kumar Bhalla pertaining to an investigation of the case, news agency ANI reported citing sources.

"An NIA team was supposed to reach here today but due to snowfall, no flights could land or take off from the airport, hence hampering their arrival. They will reach here when the flights can land and the case will be taken over by them," said a top police source in Kashmir adding that the J&amp;K police has also given its consent for the case to be taken over. The case was registered was which was registered at Qazigund police station.&nbsp;

The NIA in the past has taken over several cases from the local police and investigated them including&nbsp;Pulwama terror attack case, J&amp;K terror funding case, URI terror attack, and other suicide attacks which created big headlines.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, the sources in the agency also said that the investigation has so far revealed that terrorists and the officer were on way to Chandigarh and two terrorists were wearing turbans to hide their identity. The National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Saturday conducted searches at Thanjavur and Tiruchirapalli districts in connection with a Tamil Nadu-Kerala ISIS module case.

Today, the search was conducted at the associates of the two arrested accused. The NIA recovered digital devices including two laptops, six mobile phones, one pen drive, one hard disc, one memory card, one axe and seventeen documents from the spot. 
 
"The seized items including the digital devices will be submitted to the NIA Special Court, Ernakulam, and the digital devices will be sent for forensic examination," it stated. 
The agency said that the suspects are being examined to ascertain their association with the arrested accused and involvement in any unlawful activity.

Five other accused were absconding — Amjed, Habib-ur-Rahman, Gul Nawaz, Javed Ali and Mohd Imran, out of which Javed Ali was arrested.

"Investigation revealed that the accused was affiliated to LeT and was involved in arranging funds through hawala channels from Saudi Arabia to Muzaffarnagar in Uttar Pradesh in 2017, which were received by accused, Sheikh Abdul Nayeem," the NIA statement said.

"Terror funds were used for carrying out a recce in various places of India to recruit terrorists for LeT and identify soft targets including foreign nationals and tourists," added the statement.Further probe in the case is underway.&nbsp;

Absconding Lashkar operative arrested for raising funds to conduct terror acts in India

The National Investigation Agency conducted searches across six locations spread across five districts in Tamil Nadu in connection with a 2018 criminal conspiracy that intended to spread terror in the State by targeting Hindu religious leaders and causing communal disharmony.

The early morning searches were carried out at two locations in Coimbatore City, besides one location each in Sivaganga, Tiruchirapalli, Nagapattinam and Toothukudi districts.&nbsp;

According to an NIA Statement, the case pertains to the criminal conspiracy hatched by 6 charge-sheeted accused persons and their associates, with the intention of furthering the objectives of ISIS/ Daish by targeting certain Hindu activists in Coimbatore.&nbsp;

The statement read, “accused persons arrested by Tamil Nadu Police in this case in September 2018 and charge-sheeted by NIA in February 2019 had conducted preparations, including reconnaissance of targets, for launching such attacks, which would have caused communal disharmony and terror in the State. The investigation has revealed that the charge-sheeted accused persons and their associates were radicalized on the violent extremist ideology of ISIS/ Daish by following the speeches and videos of the Sri Lankan IS/ Daesh leader Zahran Hashim, over social media platforms”.

Today’s searches were conducted at the residences of the associates of individuals who were charge-sheeted earlier.

The agency has seized two laptops, eight mobile phones, five SIM cards, an SD card and 14 documents, which would be subjected to forensic examination. The persons searched are being questioned to ascertain their association with the charge-sheeted accused persons besides any role in this crime.

Army Chief General Bipin Rawat lauds National Investigation Agency for convictions in terror-related cases

Bangladeshi terror organisation Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen (JuM) is increasing their area of operations in India and has expanded into the country in Bihar, Maharashtra, Karnataka and Kerala under the guise of migrants from Bangladesh, according to the National Investigation Agency (NIA) Director-General YC Modi.

Modi was speaking at the two-day NIA's national conference of chiefs of Anti-Terrorism Squad and Special Task Force (STF) that began here on Monday.

"NIA has noticed that Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) has increased its activities in Bihar, Maharashtra, Kerala and Karnataka among others in the name of Bangladeshis. The NIA has also identified 125 suspicious names of JNB workers and shared them with other agencies," Modi said.

National Security Advisor (NSA) Ajit Doval, Minister of State (MoS) Home Affairs, G Kishan Reddy presided over the conference. Former IB Special Director and present Nagaland Governor RN Ravi was also present at the meeting.

Praising the work done by NIA, YC Modi said, "In a very short period the NIA has done excellent work on terror funding, Naxalism, North-East insurgency to registered cases and our success ratio is more than 90 per cent."I feel very proud that NIA and state police have very cordial relation due to which we were able to foil terrorist plans a number of times," Modi added.

The NIA DG, however, also raised concerns about the increased activity of some groups in states. Inspector-General (IG) NIA, Alok Mittal added that many top separatist leaders and chiefs of outlawed organisations had been found guilty of facilitating terror funding, which was being sent from across the border, leading to their arrest.

"In the main case of terror funding in Jammu and Kashmir, chiefs of proscribed organizations and top separatist leaders have been arrested and charge-sheeted. None have got bail so far. They were being funded from Pakistan High Commission, through remittances and hawala transfers," Mittal said.

He added that efforts were being made from Pakistan to revive terrorism in Punjab and the people arrested in targeted killing cases have been found to be linked with the Khalistan Liberation Force (KLF).

"There have been continuous efforts from across the border to revive terror activities in Punjab. Out of 16 arrested for targeted killings in eight cases, the Khalistan Liberation Force was found to be involved. Funds from UK, Italy, France and Australia were sent for this," he said.

"We have registered fresh case based on anti-India activities of Sikhs for Justice, they are running a campaign on social media and trying to radicalize Sikh youth. 5 arrested in UP`s Shamli last year admitted they were radicalized through 'Referendum 2020'&nbsp;propaganda," Mittal added.

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) will carry out an investigation into cases of drones being used by Pakistan to smuggle arms into India through bordering areas of Punjab.

On September 22, the Punjab Police had said to have busted a terrorist module of the revived Khalistan Zindabad Force (KZF), which was backed by a Pakistan and Germany based terror group that was conspiring to unleash a series of terror strikes in Punjab and its adjoining states.

According to Deputy General of Police (DGP) Dinkar Gupta, the weapons were suspected to have been delivered across the India-Pakistan border from Pakistan by drones launched by the ISI and state-sponsored 'jihadi'&nbsp;and pro-Khalistani terrorist outfits working under its command.

Expressing concerns over the incident, Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh had urged Home Minister Amit Shah to ensure necessary action in the 'incidents'&nbsp;of Pakistan-origin drones being used for dropping consignments of arms and ammunition in the state.

Taking to Twitter, Singh said that the drone incidents are just one of Pakistan's "sinister designs" following the abrogation of Article 370 granted to Jammu and Kashmir.

The Chief Minister also urged the Centre to direct the Indian Air Force (IAF) and the Border Security Force (BSF) to launch necessary counter-measures to check any further threat from drones to the border state.&nbsp;

The sources told ANI that there is "enough evidence" against the separatist leaders, including Malik, to show they were instrumental in triggering violent agitations in the Kashmir Valley in 2016 by issuing "protest calendars".

Malik is accused of being "actively engaged" in inciting secessionism and funnelling of funds for fomenting terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir.

Jammu and Kashmir Democratic Freedom Party president Shabir Shah is accused of receiving Rs 10 lakh from hawala operator Zahoor Ahmad Shah Watali, a co-accused in the case.

Hurriyat Conference general secretary Masarat Alam Bhat has been named in the charge sheet for allegedly playing a significant role in stone-pelting and subsequently in the unrest in Kashmir in 2010.

The NIA, the sources said, has described Masarat Alam as the "poster boy of stone pelters" and violent agitations in the Valley.

Another separatist leader, Asiya Andrabi, the sources said, accepted during questioning to have collected funds and donations from foreign sources to organise protests by Muslim women.

Former MLA Rashid has been named for having links with Watali for carrying out disruptive activities in the Valley.

His name came up during the interrogation of Watali who was arrested by the agency for allegedly supplying money to the terror groups in the Valley.

Rashid is the first political leader who was named and arrested in the case.&nbsp;

Sabiruddin, 46, a resident of West Bengal's Malda, has been named in FICN case and the charge sheet has been filed against him before the NIA special court in Bengaluru, the NIA said in a statementThe case pertains to the seizure of FICN having a face value of Rs 6.34 lakh in denomination of Rs 2,000 by Madanayakanahalli police station officers from four persons on August 8, 2018.

Initially, the case was registered at the Madanayakanahalli police station. The NIA took over the investigation in September last year, it said.

The NIA had filed a charge sheet against the four accused -- Mohammed Sajjad Ali, M G Raju, Gangadhar Ramappa Kolkar and Vanitha J on November 3, 2018 - under relevant provisions of the IPC, and one supplementary charge sheet was filed on March 8 this year against Abdul Kadir as per their role in commission of the offence, the statement said.

During further investigation, it was found that Sabiruddin, along with his associates based in Karnataka as well as in West Bengal, hatched a conspiracy to circulate huge quantities of FICN as genuine Indian currency notes in local markets of Bengaluru and other parts of Karnataka.

The accused were actively involved in procuring, trafficking, supplying and circulating huge quantities of FICN in the high denomination.

Sabiruddin is one of the main suppliers of FICN from Malda who, as part of the conspiracy, supplied huge quantity of FICN to his associate Raju at Bengaluru through Sajjad Ali - a courier.

The names of his associates from Malda, Bengaluru and other parts of Karnataka have come to light and further investigation against them under Section 173(8) of Code of Criminal Procedure against them is underway.&nbsp;

Coimbatore: NIA conducts raids at locations linked to ISIS sympathisers

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) conducted searches at the residences of 14 men who were deported to India from the UAE and were arrested on July 15th for owing allegiance to the proscribed terrorist organizations ISIS/ Daesh, Al-Qaeda and Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI), while being within and beyond India.&nbsp;

They had allegedly conspired and made preparations to wage war against the Indian government by forming the terrorist gang Ansarulla.

The United Arab Emirates had kept the men in jail for six months before deporting them to India last week. They were arrested from Delhi airport and brought to Tamil Nadu where a special court on Friday allowed the police to keep the men in their custody till July 26.

Following the arrests and interrogation of the 14 members, the agency also arrested two more members from Nagapattinam, taking the overall arrests to 16.

Searches were conducted at five locations in Ramanathapuram district, two locations in Theni district and one location each in Chennai city, Tirunelveli city, Madurai city, Thanjavur district, Perambalur district, Nagapattinam district and Thiruvarur district.

The NIA conducted searches at the residences of 14 arrested accused persons in this case, namely Mohamed Ibrahim (A-4), Mohamed Sheik Maitheen (A-5), Meeran Ghani (A-6), Gulam Nabi Asath (A-7), Ahamed Azarudhen (A-8), Toufiq Ahmed (A-9), Mohamed Ibrahim (A-10), Mohammed Afzar (A-11), Rafi Ahamed (A-12), Munthasir (A-13), Umar Barook (A-14), Mohideen Seeni Shahul Hameed (A-15), Faizal Sharief (A-16) and Farook (A-17).

During the searches, a laptop, 7 mobiles, 5 SIM cards, 3 memory cards, a hard disk drive, 2 pen drives, an internet dongle, 9 CDs/ DVDs and about 50 documents have been seized. The seized materials will be submitted before the Honorable Special Court for NIA cases, Chennai and the digital devices will be subjected to cyber forensic examination.

A press release from the agency said, “The accused persons and their associates had collected funds and made preparations to carry out terrorist attacks in India with the intention of establishing Islamic rule in India. Accused persons have been actively recruiting individuals to strike terror in India and have also been disseminating videos and other jihadi propaganda material exhorting their supporters to conduct terrorist attacks through various methods including the use of explosives, poison, knives and vehicles, as means of attack. NIA has arrested 16 accused persons in this case.”

Cases have been registered under sections 120B, 121A and 122 of the IPC, besides sections 17, 18, 18-B, 38 and 39 of the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act, added the NIA release.&nbsp;

Tamil Nadu: NIA raids 14 locations across state in connection with terror gang

Assuring the House against the misuse of the bill, Home Minister Amit Shah said, "I want to assure the House that Prime Minister Narendra Modi government will not allow any misuse of this law."

He further urged the members to pass the Bill unanimously so that a strong message be sent to terrorists and the world that India is united in its fight against terrorism.

When the Bill was taken up for voting, Congress'&nbsp;T Subbirami Reddy moved some amendments, which were negated.&nbsp;

The amendments in the Bill will enable the NIA to additionally investigate offences related to human trafficking, counterfeit currency, manufacture or sale of prohibited arms, cyber-terrorism and offences under the Explosive Substances Act, 1908.

It also provides for constituting special courts for the trial of scheduled offences such as human trafficking and cyber terrorism.&nbsp;

Addressing the lower house on Monday, Home Minister Amit Shah had said, "Repealing POTA (Prevention of Terrorism Act) was not a right step, the number of terrorist incidents increased so much between 2004-2008 that the then UPA government had to bring in NIA. It was after Mumbai attack that it was decided to form NIA.''

The NIA was set up in 2009 in the wake of the Mumbai terror attack which had claimed 166 lives.&nbsp;

"There has been a conviction in big cases. There have been 90 per cent conviction," Reddy said.

The union minister said that special courts have been constituted to decide cases probed by NIA but there is some delay if a judge is transferred, promoted or retires.

&nbsp;He added that the process is being simplified to avoid delay and expedite the trial process.

The Bill also seeks to strengthen powers of NIA in cases involving explosives and the responsibility in cases of human trafficking will be given to the investigation agency, Reddy said.

The intention of those detained was to recruit vulnerable youth into the ISIS or Daish for carrying out terrorist attacks in south India, especially in Kerala and Tamil Nadu, the NIA had said in a release last night.

Azarudeen was the leader of the module and has been maintaining a Facebook page 'KhilafahGFX', through which he had been propagating the ideology of ISIS, it said.

The NIA has alleged that Azarudeen has been a Facebook friend of suicide bomber Zahran Hashim and other members of the module have also been sharing radical contents attributed to Hashim, over the social media.

The officials are likely to take Azarudeen to Kochi in connection with the case and the other five have been asked to appear before a court in Kochi, the sources said.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday visited Sri Lanka and gave out a strong message of solidarity to the neighbouring island nation. He said that &nbsp;"cowardly acts of terror cannot defeat the spirit of Sri Lanka".

Modi's first stop in the country was St Anthony's church in Kochchikade. The church was the site of one of the terror attacks on April 21.&nbsp;

"I am confident Sri Lanka will rise again. Cowardly acts of terror cannot defeat the spirit of Sri Lanka. India stands in solidarity with the people of Sri Lanka," Modi tweeted immediately after his visit.

"My heart goes out to the families of the victims and the injured," he added.

Modi is the first head of any government to visit the island nation after the terror attacks.&nbsp;

The investigation revealed Riyas` link with the ISIS.

According to NIA, Riyas revealed during interrogation that he was in contact with an absconder in the case Abdul Rashid Abdulla alias Abu Isa and was following his audio clips, in which he was heard instigating others to carry out attacks in India.

Riyas also disclosed that he was in contact with Abdul Khayoom alias Abu Khalid, an accused in Valapattanam ISIS case.

Khalid is believed to be in Syria now. In 2016, as many as 15 persons disappeared from Kasargod and allegedly migrated to Afghanistan and Syria to join the ISIS.

According to the investigating agency, Aboobacker was allegedly planning suicide attacks at international tourist destinations in Kerala. He was arrested from Palakkad. In 2017, the NIA had registered a case against five people from Valapattanam in Kannur district for their alleged IS links. The investigation revealed Riyas` link with the ISIS. According to NIA, Riyas revealed during interrogation that he was in contact with an absconder in the case Abdul Rashid Abdulla alias Abu Isa and was following his audio clips, in which he was heard instigating others to carry out attacks in India. Riyas also disclosed that he was in contact with Abdul Khayoom alias Abu Khalid, an accused in Valapattanam ISIS case. Khalid is believed to be in Syria now. In 2016, as many as 15 persons disappeared from Kasargod and allegedly migrated to Afghanistan and Syria to join the ISIS. A case was registered in the matter, which is being investigated by the NIA.

The National Investigation Agency officials from Kochi carried out searches at 10 locations in Tamil Nadu on Monday in connection with an alleged conspiracy to form a terrorist group by some youngsters.&nbsp;

The searches were carried out at the residences of the 10 accused in Muthupet, Keelakarai, Devipattinam, Lalpet and Salem in connection with the case, which was earlier probed by the Keelakarai police station, the officials said.

During the searches, the agency has seized three laptops, an equal number of hard discs, 16 mobile phones, eight SIM cards, two pen drives, five memory cards and a card reader, besides two knives, the officials said.

The NIA has alleged that 10 people from Tamil Nadu had started a group on WhatsApp.

In 2018, according to the NIA, the group conspired to procure arms, raise funds to wage armed struggle, facilitate the escape of terrorists from jails and propagate their ideology to act against the state.

The case was initially registered by the Tamil Nadu Police on April 2, 2018, in the Ramanathapuram district under several sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Arms Act.

The police arrested nine accused, while one is absconding. Later, they were released on bail by the court.
