Sergio Brown, former NFL player, has been arrested in Southern California in relation to the death of his mother, authorities said. The arrest took place after&nbsp;he tried to re-enter the United States from Mexico only few weeks after the 73-year-old woman was found dead behind her suburban Chicago home. The 35-year-old&nbsp;was detained on Tuesday afternoon and booked into San Diego County Jail without bail after a "fugitive arrest," records reveal.

During a court hearing on Wednesday (Oct 11), Brown agreed to be extradited to Illinois, the San Diego District Attorney's office spokesperson Steve Walker told The Associated Press via email.

The search for Brown began soon after his mother Myrtle Brown's death. Her body was&nbsp;found on Sep 16 near a creek in Maywood. Since then, relatives had mentioned that they could not find Myrtle as well as Sergio. Later, a&nbsp;medical examiner ruled her death a homicide and revealed that she had sustained injuries during an assault.

Following this, Sergio had gone missing as police shifted focus towards his whereabouts. During this time, a video on Instagram appeared where a man resembling Brown called Myrtle's death "fake news".&nbsp;

"Fake news, fake news, fake news. It has to be the FBI," the man was heard rambling in an unclear video and added that he&nbsp;thought his mother "was on vacation" in the Mexican state of Sinaloa.

Soon, another video surfaced on his Instagram story where the man took a leaf from the film&nbsp;"Finding Nemo," repeating its iconic line, "Just keep swimming, just keep swimming," the Chicago Tribune reported.

Brown, who graduated from Proviso East High School in Maywood, played college football for Notre Dame before his NFL stint.&nbsp;In the NFL, he represented the likes of New England Patriots, Indianapolis Colts, Jacksonville Jaguars and Buffalo Bills from 2010-2016.&nbsp;

Minnesota Vikings receiver Justin Jefferson is set to miss at least the next four games due to a strained right hamstring injury. The 24-year-old suffered the injury&nbsp;on Sunday (Oct 8)&nbsp;in his side's&nbsp;27-20 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs.

The Vikings plan to place Jefferson on injured reserve, ESPN's Adam Schefter confirmed Tuesday, to ensure that he does not return to the field too early and suffer a setback. The earliest he could be activated is for a Week 10 game against the New Orleans Saints, but the Vikings will determine at that point whether he's ready to resume playing or if he needs more time.

The decision tracks with what coach Kevin O'Connell said Monday during a news conference with reporters.

"We're going to have to medically make a good decision and help almost protect him from himself a little bit in a way where we've got to take care of him and get him back to 100 percent," O'Connell said.

Damar Hamlin, the Buffalo Bills safety who suffered a heart-stopping blow in an NFL game last January, played against Miami on Sunday in his first regular-season contest since the incident.

With a sellout crowd of home supporters cheering, Hamlin made his emotional regular-season comeback on kickoff coverage in the first quarter of a 48-20 triumph over the Dolphins, completing an emotional nine-month journey back to the gridiron.

"Good to have you back, 3," the Bills posted on social media with a short video clip of Hamlin in a pre-game workout.

The team also posted a video of Hamlin being hugged by teammates before running onto the field just before the game and then to the stands behind the far end zone, screaming to the fans cheering him, "Let's go!"

The 25-year old defensive back had played in all three of Buffalo's pre-season contests but was on the team inactive list for the Bills' first three regular-season games.

A knee injury kept Bills safety Jordan Poyer out of Sunday's game and opened a reserve roster spot for Hamlin, who also plays on special teams kicking plays for Buffalo.

"I felt amazing," Hamlin said after the game. "The energy from the fans was amazing, but just being out there with my teammates, having my dad in the stands.

Hamlin had not played in a regular-season game since January 2 at Cincinnati, when he collided with Bengals wide receiver Tee Higgins.&nbsp;

The blow resulted in cardiac arrest, with medical workers restoring his heartbeat on the field.

Hamlin was hospitalized in critical condition but improved and later was moved to a Buffalo hospital for more treatment before being discharged on January 11.

In April, Bills general manager Brandon Beane announced Hamlin had been medically cleared to return to the NFL and Hamlin announced that was his intention.

Hamlin was back at training camp and last month made his competitive return to the NFL in a pre-season game against Las Vegas. In all, Hamlin was on the field for 73 defensive plays and 19 others on kick teams in pre-season contests.

Buffalo quarterback Josh Allen was near perfect in guiding the Bills to a 48-20 victory over Miami on Sunday, with the Dolphins' defeat leaving San Francisco and Philadelphia as the NFL's only unbeaten teams.

Allen threw for four touchdowns and ran for another as Buffalo's offense stole the spotlight from a Dolphins squad that had hung 70 points on the Denver Broncos last week.

Stefon Diggs had six receptions for 120 yards and three touchdowns and the Bills defense clamped down to limit the explosive Dolphins offense led by quarterback Tua Tagovailoa.

Meanwhile Christian McCaffrey ran riot for the 49ers, scoring a career-high four touchdowns in a 35-16 victory over NFC West rivals Arizona that saw San Francisco improve to 4-0.

In another key division matchup, the Eagles improved to 4-0 with a 34-31 overtime victory over the Washington Commanders sealed by Jake Elliott's 54-yard field goal.

In Buffalo, the Bills scored on eight of their first nine possessions and never trailed on the way to a third straight victory, denying Miami's bid for a two-game lead atop the AFC East division.

A game that promised plenty of offensive fireworks saw the first five drives produce five touchdowns that left the Bills with a 21-14 lead.

But Buffalo's defense began to get the measure of Tagovailoa and the Dolphins, piling up four sacks and limiting Miami to six points after halftime.

Diggs's first touchdown put Buffalo up 21-14 and his second, a 55-yard catch and run that saw him shake off two defenders as he raced up the sideline, took it to 28-14.

Buffalo had pushed the lead to 31-14 before the Dolphins opened the third quarter with a TD, but the Bills scored 17 points from there.

The victory left both teams at 3-1, with Buffalo holding a slight edge on a tiebreaker.

Allen was outstanding, but said the big home win was due to meticulous preparation by the whole team.

"I thought our guys were very locked in on details this week and in terms of game plan specific things and making sure we had a good presence in our locker room," he said.

But Bills Coach Sean McDermott said he wasn't surprised to see Allen and Diggs setting a tone.

"Big-time players have big-time games in these type settings," McDermott said.

McCaffrey put on a scintillating show at the 49ers' Levi's Stadium, gaining 177 yards from scrimmage and scoring on three runs and one catch.

Now with a touchdown in 13 straight games, including playoffs, he broke a franchise record set by the great Jerry Rice.

The mark fell when McCaffrey scored on a one-yard run on the opening drive. On the second he took a lateral pass and leapt over a defender to reach the end zone and he caught a six-yard touchdown pass from Brock Purdy in the second quarter.

McCaffrey added a two-yard scoring run in the fourth quarter that put San Francisco up 28-16.

<h2>Eagles show up</h2>

The Eagles had to work overtime to remain unbeaten atop the NFC East. Quarterback Jalen Hurts threw for 319 yards and two touchdowns.

His 28-yard scoring pass to A.J. Brown with 1:28 left in regulation gave Philadelphia a 31-24 lead, but the Commanders responded with a drive capped by Sam Howell's scoring pass to Jahan Dotson to force overtime and it needed Elliott's fourth field goal of the contest to seal it.

"We showed up when it mattered the most," Hurts said.

In Dallas, the Cowboys handed iconic New England coach Bill Belichick the most lopsided defeat of his career with their 38-3 drubbing of the Patriots.

Dallas cornerback DaRon Bland returned one of his two interceptions for a touchdown and the Cowboys' Leighton Vander Esch ran a fumble back for a score.

Pats quarterback Mac Jones, who was responsible for all three of those turnovers, was benched in the second half of the defeat that left Belichick, who guided the Patriots to six Super Bowl titles, still in search of a 300th regular-season win.

The Patriots' previous worst defeat under Belichick was a 31-0 loss at Buffalo in 2003.

The rout made for a rough homecoming for former Dallas star Ezekiel Elliott, despite the Cowboys' video tribute before the game.

Spain, France, Brazil and even Australia are being looked at as possible future sites for NFL regular season games as the league ramps up its efforts to grow the game abroad, a league official said.

The NFL kicks off the first of this season's international games on Sunday at Wembley Stadium in London before the series shifts for the first time to Frankfurt for two games starting Nov. 5.

"A major focus of the league and our clubs has been bringing our game abroad, connecting with fans, and growing the next generation of fans outside the U.S.," NFL executive vice president Peter O'Reilly told Reuters. "It's a long term commitment that we've been at for a while, but now we're doubling down."

While easily the most popular and profitable league in the U.S., the NFL's growth in soccer-obsessed Europe has been more modest.

NFL Europe, which began in 1991 with 10 teams, shuttered in 2007 and was replaced by regular season NFL games starting with a contest at Wembley in October 2007.

O'Reilly said the league now has a firm foothold in London, as well as in Mexico and Germany, and said passionate locals will outnumber expats and American tourists when Wembley hosts its 25th NFL game this weekend.

"This is not a novelty anymore," he said. "It may have been back at the very first game at Wembley, but now this is a really educated fanbase."

About 82% of tickets sold for two London games at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium next month went to fans in the United Kingdom, the NFL said.

There are no immediate plans to add a club in London, or an entire four-team division in Europe, but O'Reilly said expanding the game's reach helps lay the groundwork in case that opportunity arises.

And while Saudi Arabia has controversially poured hundreds of millions of dollars into sports including golf and Formula One, O'Reilly said there were no discussions about hosting a game there, although he did not rule out the possibility.

"More broadly, the Middle East is an important part of the world and that's an area where we want continue to grow our fanbase," he said.

The NFL is also looking to add more international players and recently announced it would expand practice squads for all 32 teams to include one player born outside North America as part of its International Player Pathway (IPP) program.

Thirty-seven international players have signed with NFL teams since the program launched in 2017, including Australia's Jordan Mailata, who started at tackle for the Philadelphia Eagles in last season's Super Bowl.

O'Reilly said he expects that number to rise.

"There's a pathway to 150 foreign born players in the NFL in the not-so-distant future," he said.

This season's five international games are:

The Philadelphia Eagles maintained their unbeaten start to the NFL season with a comprehensive 25-11 victory on the road over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Monday.

Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts rushed for one touchdown and threw for another as last season's Super Bowl runners-up improved to 3-0 –- the franchise's best start to a season since the 1992-1993 campaign.

Hurts finished with 277 passing yards from 23-of-37 attempts while rushing&nbsp;28 yards from 10 carries, including one of the Eagles' trademark "tush-push" close-range touchdowns.

Philadelphia running back D’Andre Swift had 130 yards from 16 carries while wide receiver A.J. Brown caught the eye with 131 yards from nine receptions.

The Eagles are now only one of three teams in the league with a 3-0 record, joining the San Francisco 49ers and Miami Dolphins.

Hurts warned after the game that the Eagles still had plenty of room for improvement as they target a swift return to the Super Bowl this season.

"We found a way to win, and we found a way to execute," Hurts said.

"I think we're a work in progress. We're playing really good team football, and we're still growing. That's the beautiful thing about it."

A cagey opening period saw defenses on top, with the Eagles having to settle for a 36-yard Jake Elliott field goal for their only scoring drive of the first quarter.

Tampa Bay, who were also unbeaten before Monday, squared the game at 3-3 after a Chase McLaughlin field goal in the second quarter before the Eagles took over.

Hurts threaded a superb 34-yard pass to Olamide Zaccheaus for the game's opening touchdown before Elliott booted another field goal to put Philadelphia 13-3 up at half-time.

The Eagles turned the screw with the opening drive of the third quarter, Hurts marching his team 75 yards up field with a 13-play masterpiece that culminated with the quarterback being shoved over from one yard out to make it 20-3.

Tampa Bay were given a glimmer of hope soon afterwards when Dee Delaney produced a stunning interception to deny Philadelphia another touchdown.

But the Eagles hit back as Tampa Bay tried to rush out of the end zone, with Rachaad White stopped in his tracks to concede a safety that put Philadelphia 22-3 ahead. Elliott added another field goal to stretch the Eagles lead to 25-3.

The Bucs did finally breach the Eagles defense on their next possession, with quarterback Baker Mayfield finding Mike Evans for a close-range score and then making the two-point conversion.

But it was too little too late as Philadelphia ran down the clock in the fourth quarter to close out victory.

"Give the Eagles credit, they made some plays and we didn't," Tampa Bay head coach Todd Bowles said.&nbsp;

"We didn't move the ball well. But we win as a team and we lose as a team. The offense didn't play well and the defense didn't play well."

The Miami Dolphins destroyed the Denver Broncos 70-20 on Sunday, putting up a franchise-record point total for a team and the second highest in an NFL regular-season game.

The Dolphins had 350 yards rushing and 376 yards passing with quarterback Tua Tagovailoa throwing four touchdowns and running back Raheem Mostert scoring three.

They moved to 3-0 on the season in the most emphatic fashion.

"This doesn't compare to anything I've been a part of," Tagovailoa said after a game where Miami led 35-13 at half-time.

It was a different story in Green Bay, where Jordan Love led the Packers out of a 17-point hole in the fourth quarter to an 18-17 win over the New Orleans Saints in his home debut as the team's starter.

The Packers scored all their points in the last 11 minutes of the game, with Romeo Doubs brilliantly collecting an eight-yard Love pass for the win.

The Saints, with backup Jameis Winston in at quarterback in place of injured Derek Carr, had a chance to win with 2:56 to go but rookie kicker Blake Grupe missed a 46-yard field goal attempt.

"It's always about how the game ends," said Love, who took over the starting job this season after the departure of four-time NFL Most Valuable Player Aaron Rodgers.

Investigators in Illinois in the Midwestern United States are searching for former NFL player Sergio Brown. This after his mother was found dead at their home in a suburb of Chicago.

Police are investigating a video, which has gone viral, that appears to show former NFL star Sergio Brown who has been reported missing last week&nbsp;along with his mother, who was later found dead in an apparent homicide. Reportedly, someone appearing&nbsp;to be Brown shared an unclear&nbsp;video message on social media platform&nbsp;Instagram on Tuesday morning (September 19). He even tagged the message to Mexico in his post.&nbsp;

Since then, the Maywood police department in the Chicago suburbs&nbsp;confirmed Deadspin that it is investigating&nbsp;the viral clip which has made heads turn.

"Detectives are aware of a video that has surfaced on social media in relation to Mr Sergio Brown, who is still considered a missing person and are also looking [into its] authenticity. Currently this is an active investigation, and the department is unable to share any further details at this time," read the statement.

Maywood police revealed that they issued a missing persons report on September 16 (Saturday) after the family members gave up on not being able to locate Brown and his 73-year-old mother Myrtle Brown.

Myrtle's body&nbsp;was later found by a creek near her residence, according&nbsp;to the Chicago Tribune. Later, a&nbsp;medical examiner concluded that she&nbsp;died by homicide following an assault.

After Myrtle's shocking death, reactions have been pouring in from all corners.

"Myrtle, she was an outstanding woman, and I’m hoping she’s in the right place and she’s with God,” Carlos Cortez, Myrtle Brown’s neighbor, told Chicago broadcaster WBBM. "I never would’ve expected this in a million years," Cortez added.

However, the neighbour was quick to point out that Brown had been acting out of character for months.

Brown’s brother Nick shared a heartfelt&nbsp;tribute for his mother on social media while also mentioning his missing sibling.

However the reigning Super Bowl champion Chiefs have reworked that deal in order to boost Mahomes' pay in the near term at a time when quarterback salaries have skyrocketed, multiple US reports said.

Mahomes, widely regarded as the best quarterback in the NFL, will now receive a guaranteed $210.6 million between 2023 and 2026, a figure that could rise to $218.1 million if certain targets are met.

While Mahomes remains contracted through 2031, the Chiefs and their quarterback plan to revisit the deal once more after the 2026 season, reports said.

Under the reworked contract, Mahomes will be paid an average of $52.65 million per season, which is second only to the Cincinnati Bengals' Joe Burrow in terms of annual salary.

Burrow recently signed an NFL record contract extension that is worth a reported $275 million over five years.

Burrow's deal was one of a wave of recent quarterback contracts that eclipsed Mahomes previous contract.&nbsp;

The Los Angeles Chargers' Justin Herbert signed a five-year $262.5 million extension in July, while the Baltimore Ravens Lamar Jackson inked a $260 million five-year agreement in April. The Philadelphia Eagles' Jalen Hurts also agreed a bumper contract in April worth $255 million over five years.

Mahomes was chosen by the Chiefs with the 10th pick of the 2017 NFL Draft and has since led the franchise to two Super Bowl titles, while winning NFL Most Valuable Player in 2018 and 2022.

Highsmith then forced a fumble from Watson midway through the fourth quarter, allowing Steelers star T.J. Watt to scoop up the loose ball and run in the first touchdown of his NFL career for what turned out to be the winning score.

Pittsburgh's defense -- which sacked Watson six times throughout -- then came up with two more big stops in the closing stages to thwart Cleveland's hopes of snatching victory at the Steelers' Acrisure Stadium.

Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski said Chubb had suffered a "significant knee injury" that was likely to rule him out for the remainder of the season.

In Monday's other NFL game, the New Orleans Saints continued their unbeaten start to the season after downing the Carolina Panthers 20-17 in a defensive arm-wrestle between the two NFC South divisional rivals.

NFL: Pittsburgh Steelers hold of Cleveland Browns; Saints beat Panthers

The New York Giants rallied from 21 points down to win 31-28 at the Arizona Cardinals in a remarkable franchise-record equalling comeback on Sunday.

The Giants had lost their opening game, 40-0 to Dallas last week, and they had statisticians scrambling for details on the worst ever starts to an NFL season when they trailed 20-0 at half-time.

But quarterback Daniel Jones set about orchestrating a stunning turnaround, with a 13-yard rushing touchdown early in the third and although Cardinals quarterback Joshua Dobbs responded by connecting with Marquise Brown for a three-yard score, the Giants proved unstoppable.

New York put up 24 unanswered points in the remainder of the game before Graham Gano slotted a 34-yard field goal with 19 seconds left on the clock to put the Giants ahead.

Jones ended the game with three total touchdowns having thrown for 321 yards and rushed for another 59.

Running back Saquon Barkley had two touchdowns and rushed for 63 yards but had to come out of the game in the final stages with what appeared to be a serious ankle injury.

The 21-point comeback is the biggest by the Giants in the modern NFL era and matches wins against the Chicago Cardinals in 1949 and the Philadelphia Eagles four years earlier.

The Washington Commanders produced a big comeback of their own, overturning an 18-point deficit at the winless Denver Broncos to leave with a 35-33 victory.

Washington trailed 21-3 in the second, before they put up 18 unanswered points and then two rushing touchdowns from Brian Robinson Jr in the fourth quarter put them 11 points up.

But a field goal for Denver narrowed the gap and then with the clock running out a 'Hail Mary' pass from Broncos quarterback Russell Wilson was tipped on and eventually collected in the end zone by Brandon Johnson to give Denver the chance of a comeback of their own.

They were unable to make the two-point conversion needed to force overtime however, leaving their new coach Sean Payton with a 0-2 start to the season.

Earlier, Patrick Mahomes threw for two touchdowns as the Kansas City Chiefs bounced back from their season-opening loss to defeat the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday.

Reigning NFL Most Valuable Player Mahomes overcame a slow start to finish with 305 yards from 29-of-41 passes to give the reigning Super Bowl champions a gritty 17-9 win on the road in Florida.

Mahomes and the Chiefs had been upset at home by the Detroit Lions in their opening game of the season after a litany of blunders by the receiving corps.

But with fit-again tight end Travis Kelce back in the starting line-up, Mahomes looked more like his old self as the Chiefs dug deep for a hard-earned victory.

Mahomes picked out favourite target Kelce for a third quarter touchdown after earlier connecting with Skyy Moore for the Chiefs' other touchdown.

The Dallas Cowboys moved to 2-0 with another confident victory, beating the New York Jets 30-10.

The Jets, who lost quarterback Aaron Rodgers for the season after he snapped his achilles tendon in the win over Buffalo on Monday, had little joy against an impressive Cowboys defense.

Rodgers' deputy, Zach Wilson, threw three interceptions while the Cowboys benefitted from five field goals from rookie Brandon Aubrey.

The Bills bounced back with a 38-10 rout of the Las Vegas Raiders with quarterback Josh Allen tossing three touchdowns with no interceptions to finish with 274 yards from 31-of-37 attempts.

But while the Chiefs and Bills got back to winning ways, the Cincinnati Bengals fell to 0-2 after a 27-24 loss to divisional rivals Baltimore.

Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson threw for two touchdowns and 237 yards as Bengals counterpart Joe Burrow once again struggled to get into the groove.

Burrow led a late rally to close the Bengals' deficit to three points with a pass to Tee Higgins in the end zone with 3:28 remaining in the fourth quarter.

But Baltimore held on to possession on the next drive to run down the clock as the Ravens improved to 2-0.

In Detroit, Lions quarterback Jared Goff's bid to set a new NFL record for the longest passing streak without an interception came to an abrupt end in a 37-31 overtime defeat to the Seattle Seahawks in the Motor City.

Goff had been within touching distance of Aaron Rodgers' record of 402 passes without a takeaway after moving to 383 attempts without an interception.

But the streak ended when Goff was picked off by Tre Brown in the fourth quarter for a touchdown to help Seattle into 31-21 lead.

After the Vikings opened up a 7-3 lead early in the second, Philadelphia scored 24 straight points and never looked back -- helped by turnovers from Minnesota.

Eagles&nbsp;quarterback Jalen Hurts struggled with the passing game in the first half in Philadelphia but he too showed his value on the ground.

The Vikings gave themselves a chance when quarterback Kirk Cousins found Jordan Addison with a throw down the middle for a 62-yard touchdown.

Minnesota made it a six-point game when K.J Osborn scored on a 10-yard pass from Cousins but the&nbsp;Eagles&nbsp;responded on the next drive with Swift finishing off a 75-yard drive with a two-yard touchdown run to give them a 34-21 lead with&nbsp;4:13 left.

Cousins connected with tight-end T.J. Hockenson with 1:10 left in the game but the Eagles&nbsp; held firm.

The Vikings paid the price for turnovers, giving up four fumbles, three of them in the first half of the game.

The most crucial was just before half-time when receiver Justin Jefferson lost the ball attempting a touchdown, allowing the&nbsp;Eagles&nbsp;possession with a touchback.

Just as in their win at New England in week one, the&nbsp;Eagles&nbsp;were far from the levels produced last season but Hurts said they had shown they know how to grind out victories.

"I think the reality is that when you have so much success and you win, you do it in certain types of ways, it becomes how you win. The reality is all we are going to do is win," he told Amazon Prime.

Philadelphia ran for a total of 259 yards and center Jason Kelce said they had ground down the Vikings with their running game.

"We're really happy to be able to assert our will and over the course of the game you felt it just pile up," he said.

"We know we have got things that we have got to clean up. We had a lot of opportunities on offense and we need to put up more points. The game should not have been that close," he said.

Despite the loss Cousins can take some comfort from his own display, throwing four touchdowns and 364 yards with no interceptions.

NFL superstar quarterback Aaron Rodgers was dejected on Tuesday after learning he had suffered a season-ending torn left Achilles tendon, New York Jets coach Robert Saleh said Tuesday.

An MRI exam Tuesday morning showed the 39-year-old, four-time NFL Most Valuable Player suffered a complete tendon tear when he was sacked by Buffalo's Leonard Floyd only four plays into his Jets debut, which New York won 22-16 over the visiting Bills in the season opener for both.

"He's down," Saleh said in a news conference. "With everything he has invested and it lasting four plays, you can imagine it's disappointing."

With Rodgers turning 40 in December, there was concern that one of the most prolific passers in NFL history might have played his final contest.

"I did not get into the future of what he's expecting. I'll let him get into those questions," Saleh said. "We'll try to let him breathe and give him some time to process everything."

Rodgers, who spent 18 seasons with the Green Bay Packers before being traded to the Jets in April, went down awkwardly about four minutes into the game and was helped off the field with what was then called a left ankle injury, the iconic signal caller limping into the locker room with a walking boot on his left foot.

"I feel more for Aaron that anyone. He has invested so much in this organization, into this journey he has embarked on," Saleh said.

"It's really all about him. Guys are excited to step up and continue what we have been building but there's a lot of hurting for Aaron."

Rodgers attempting to make the Jets a contender and build a legacy away from Green Bay had become the biggest story of the NFL off-season.

The Jets obtained Rodgers because they saw&nbsp;a top quarterback as the key missing piece to contending for a title.

Instead, the Jets will be led by Zach Wilson, who struggled to an 8-14 mark in two seasons before being replaced by Rodgers.

"Zach has proven to be a very capable quarterback," Saleh said. "We have all the faith in the world in Zach."

Reserve quarterback Tim Boyle will be elevated from the practice squad to work behind Wilson, who steps into a huge challenge.

The Jets next play Sunday at Dallas against a Cowboys' squad that opened by beating the New York Giants 40-0, then play host to New England and reigning champion Kansas City the following two weeks.

Oddsmakers at Ceasars Sportsbook dropped the Jets' chances of winning the Super Bowl from 16-1 to 35-1 and other betting services made similar moves.

"I don't know why people are trying to put an obituary under our team name," Saleh said. "There are 52 other guys in the locker room... who believe we can do a hell of a lot of good things."

Rodgers' injury was more heartbreak for long-suffering Jets supporters.

The team won its only Super Bowl in 1969 and owns the longest playoff drought in major North American sports, last making a post-season appearance in 2010.

It was not the first time the Jets lost a top quarterback in the opener of a much-anticipated campaign.

In 1999, a year after the Jets were one win shy of the Super Bowl, they saw Vinny Testaverde exit the opener with a season-ending Achilles tendon rupture. They went 8-8.

The Jets website has a video series named "One Jets Drive" after the club's mailing address, but it also summed up Rodgers' entire season.

Green Bay is owed a second-round pick in the 2024 NFL Draft for the Rodgers deal. It would have been a first rounder had Rodgers played in 65% of New York's snaps this season.

As the Jets pondered trades or free agents, commentators and fans suggested contacting 46-year-old Tom Brady, the NFL's all-time leader in completions, pass yardage and touchdown throws.

The seven-time Super Bowl champion ended a 40-day retirement last year to play for Tampa Bay before retiring "for good" in February.

Brady posted a video clip of himself playing basketball Tuesday saying he was "in the lab" and "trying to keep up with the kids these days."

NFL superstar quarterback Aaron Rodgers made a brief debut with the New York Jets on Monday against Buffalo but went out for the game in the opening minutes with a left ankle injury.

The Jets announced during the second quarter that the four-time NFL Most Valuable Player Rodgers would not return to his much-anticipated Jets debut, the season opener for both teams, but that x-rays showed no broken bones.

Rodgers was sacked by Buffalo's Leonard Floyd for a 10-yard loss and his left leg twisted awkwardly on the play.

After spending a minute on the ground in pain, he was helped off the field and taken to the medical evaluation tent.

The legendary 39-year-old passer, who spent 18 seasons with the Green Bay Packers, was examined inside a tent and was wearing a walking boot on his left ankle and foot when he was carted from the sidelines.

Rodgers was the 2011 Super Bowl MVP when he led the Packers to a title, but he was traded to the Jets last April with hopes to revive a New York squad that won its only Super Bowl in 1969 and hasn't reached the NFL playoffs since 2010.

That made his early setback all the more emotional for long-suffering Jets supporters, although Jets coach Robert Saleh kept his cool when speaking to telecaster ESPN after the first quarter.

"We still have a hell of a group of guys," he said. "Obviously Aaron is a big part of that but we still have an unbelievable defense. We've got a lot of great guys on offense.

"We'll get this thing done."

Jets backup quarterback Zach Wilson replaced Rodgers in the New York lineup, but the Bills were leading 13-3 at half-time before a crowd of more than 83,000.

The much-anticipated Rodgers debut with the Jets lasted only four snaps before he was hurt just over three minutes into the contest.

After an opening run, Rodgers threw an incomplete pass on first down at the Jets' 38-yard line, and the Bills were handed a five-yard holding penalty on the play after that.

On the next play, Rodgers suffered his game-ending injury.

Buffalo reserve defensive back Damar Hamlin, who collapsed after going into cardiac arrest when hit during a January game but recovered to make the team this season, was at the contest but not activated by the Bills to play.

On Tuesday (September 12), Rodgers will undergo an MRI but coach Robert Saleh is not very optimistic.

"The MRI is probably going to confirm what we think is going to happen, so prayers tonight," Saleh told reporters after the game versus the Bills. "But it's not good," he added.

It is to be noted that a&nbsp;torn Achilles would be a season-ending injury for the veteran. In addition, it&nbsp;could be a career-threatening injury for the 39-year-old Rodgers, who recently stated that he wishes to carry on for a few more years.&nbsp;

Rodgers -- who shifted from the Green Bay Packers after an 18-year-long association -- was sacked by Bills defensive end Leonard Floyd with 11:15 left in the first quarter. He stayed on the ground for some time and was assisted to the sidelines courtesy of two members of the medical staff. As a result, Zach Wilson replaced&nbsp;the experienced campaigner at quarterback and guided the Jets to the win in overtime.

After tests conducted on Tuesday (September 05),&nbsp;the Kansas City Chiefs are pretty confident of All-Pro tight end Travis Kelce's fitness and believe his ACL is intact, a source told ESPN. Kelce has inflammation in his knee and, hence, the Chiefs will test it once again Wednesday (September 06)&nbsp;to determine his availability for the NFL's season opener where they are up against the Detroit Lions on Thursday evening, the source further said.

Earlier on Tuesday, Chiefs coach Andy Reid revealed Kelce suffered a hyperextended knee during the day's practice. "The next guy steps in and we roll," Reid said while responding to the query on how the game plan might change in Kelce's absence. "That's what you do if [he doesn't play]" he stated.&nbsp;Wide receiver Skyy Moore said he was running a route on the play when Kelce was injured. "He was limping when I saw him, like, just walking off the field," Moore revealed, adding&nbsp;that Kelce left the practice field without any help. "It was a good sign to see him get up by himself and get off the field," he further asserted.

The San Francisco 49ers produced a statement victory on the opening Sunday of the new NFL season with an emphatic 30-7 crushing of the Pittsburgh Steelers while the Philadelphia Eagles survived a poor display to win at New England.

The Cincinnati Bengals and their high-earning quarterback Joe Burrow suffered a surprise 24-3 defeat at divisional rivals Cleveland while the Tampa Bay Buccaneers started life after Tom Brady with 20-17 victory at Minnesota.

The Philadelphia Eagles, beaten in last season's Super Bowl by the Kansas City Chiefs, won 25-20 at the New England Patriots while Tua Tagovailoa led the Miami Dolphins to a thrilling 36-34 win at the Los Angeles Chargers.

The Steelers narrowed the deficit at the end of the first half when Pat Freiermuth collected a three-yard scoring pass from Kenny Pickett at the end of a 12-play, 95-yard drive.

But the 49ers defense held firm in the second half and McCaffrey's magnificent 65-yard rushing touchdown in the third quarter crowned an excellent win.

The other defeated conference championship team from last year, the Bengals -- who lost out to eventual Super Bowl winners Kansas City in the AFC Championship -- had a very different start.

Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson, who missed the first 11 games of last season after he was suspended following an investigation into sexual harassment allegations, threw one touchdown and ran for another in an impressive display from Cleveland.

Burrow signed a five-year contract extension with the Bengals on Saturday that makes him the league's highest-paid player, with the 26-year-old due to earn $275 million from the deal, but he was held to just 82 yards passing, the lowest return of his career.

Watson got the Browns rolling with a 13-yard touchdown run at the end of the second quarter and then sealed the victory with a three-yard pass to Harrison Bryant in the fourth, with the quarterback then running in the two-point conversion.

"I think the result kind of speaks for itself," Watson said after the victory in rainy conditions.

"I think the biggest statement is for us to be able to go out there regardless of the adversity, regardless of the weather condition, and pull through and get this victory. That's what it's all about in this league."

The Eagles didn't sparkle or shine against the Patriots but managed to grind out a win on a day in which their usually potent offense was mis-firing.

Quarterback Jalen Hurts through 22-for-33 for 170 yards and a touchdown and the Eagles only had 251 total yards offense.

Miami's offense was certainly firing on all cylinders with Tagovailoa throwing for 466 yards and three touchdowns while Tyreek Hill caught two of those touchdowns and had 215 yards receiving.

Tagovailoa connected with Hill for what proved to be the game-winner with 1:45 remaining.

Jason Sanders missed the point after, leaving the Chargers with the chance to win the game with a field goal, but Miami defenders Jaelan Phillips and Justin Bethel sacked Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert on fourth down.

Tampa Bay had turned to Baker Mayfield to replace the retired Brady and after a sticky opening in Minneapolis he made a winning start for his new club.

Mayfield threw for 173 yards and two touchdowns - tying the game at 10-10 with a 28-yard pass to Mike Evans late in the second before a seven-yard pass to Trey Palmer, at the end of a 16-play, 75-yard drive in the third put Tampa ahead.

The Vikings fought back, with Kirk Cousins finding Alexander Mattison for a touchdown early in the fourth, but Tampa won the game on a career-long 57-yard field goal from Chase McLaughlin.

Week 1: Eagles survive poor game against Patriots; 49ers crush Steelers on opening Sunday Night Football

Baltimore Ravens' thumping 25-9 win over Houston Texans lost its sheen a bit after running back JK&nbsp;Dobbins suffered a season-ending injury. The RB suffered a torn Achilles five minutes after the half-time and it devastated the entire locker room.&nbsp;

Dobbins received a short pass in the 3rd quarter from quarterback Lamar Jackson and went to his right. He was then tackled by Texans safety MJ&nbsp;Stewart while just two yards short of the end zone. Mahomes, who had been 5-0 in openers, threw for 226 yards with two touchdowns. He was also the Chiefs' leading rusher with 45 yards on six carries.

But the Chiefs clearly missed star tight end Travis Kelce, who was out with a knee injury. Kadarius Toney struggled unsuccessfully to fill the void, one of his missed catches bouncing into the hands of Branch who returned it for a TD in his NFL debut.

Branch's pick-six tied it up again. After two field goals from Harrison Butker put &nbsp;the Chiefs up 20-14, Montgomery's scoring run capped a 75-yard Detroit drive.

Kansas City had a last chance when the Lions turned the ball over on downs near midfield with 2:30 remaining. But a dropped pass by Toney was followed by two penalties and Mahomes's last-gasp fourth-down throw was incomplete.

"Our defense stepped up today and held us in this game," Goff said.

Week one continues on Sunday, when the marquee match-ups include the big-spending Baltimore Ravens hosting the Houston Texans and the Philadelphia Eagles, who fell to Kansas City in the Super Bowl in February, at the New England Patriots.

On August 26 (Saturday), the 23-year-old Trey Lance was traded from the San Francisco 49ers to the Dallas Cowboys. While the youngster is still getting accustomed to his new surroundings, he is already enjoying his new environment. Reacting to his switch, Lance said, "I really tried to not expect anything one way or another, but I can say that when I heard 'Cowboys,' I had a big smile on my face. The QB, however, decided to part ways after losing out on the backup quarterback job to Sam Darnold. The Niners have received a fourth-round pick in the next year's NFL Draft for sending Lance to Dallas. The 49ers will also not be picking any of Lance's remaining salary which is $940,000 in 2023 and $5.3 million salary in 2024, all of which is guaranteed.

Speaking after the trade, Lynch said that 'It's not what it looked like when we first started having a conversation. It (the trade) wasn't anywhere close.'&nbsp;

"So, it did advance in a hurry today. I'm not doing cartwheels over it, because my preference would've been that it worked out, and it didn't. And there's circumstances for that, and we can explain them away, but the reality is the reality. He had a couple opportunities, and I think injuries played a part, and where we're at as a team, we felt like this was the best situation for us, also the best situation for him," he added.

Lance, number three overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, played just eight games for the 49ers. He was the starter last season but an injury cut short his season just after two games and Brock Prudy then took over the reins.
