Five speech therapists were found guilty of sedition by a Hong Kong court after they produced a number of picture books for kids featuring cartoon animals. This case, according to opponents, demonstrates the city's increasing limits on liberties.

In 2020 and 2021, the industry association General Union of Hong Kong Speech Therapists published articles about a "sheep community" that had been harassed and harmed. The fables, according to the prosecution, were allegories that "indoctrinated" kids to embrace independence and hate Beijing.

On September 10, the speech therapists are scheduled to be sentenced. They might spend up to two years behind bars.

District judge Kwok Wai-kin of Hong Kong remarked, "Seditious intention stems not merely from the words, but from the words with the proscribed effects intended to result in the mind of children," as he announced his decision on Wednesday.

Defence attorneys for the therapists had contended that the alleged offence was "unconstitutional on the ground that it is inconsistent with their freedom of expression, speech, and publication."

The case has been interpreted as a symbol of dwindling liberties in the financial centre since Beijing implemented a comprehensive national security law in 2020 as a result of widespread pro-democracy demonstrations the year before. The judiciary in Hong Kong has gotten much tougher on pro-democracy activists.

Jimmy Lai, a 74-year-old media entrepreneur and the creator of the pro-democracy tabloid Apple Daily, lost last week's lawsuit to stop national security officials from checking his cell phones for journalistic data, setting a precedent that may apply to other cases. Lai just lost his bid for a jury trial.

47 opposition lawmakers who were charged with subversion in relation to efforts to choose candidates to run in the city's de facto parliament, the Legislative Council, election two years ago were also given a non-jury trial. Numerous members of the organisation have been detained since 2021, and 29 of them have said they will enter guilty pleas.

One of the books allegedly described how Chinese officials apprehended and detained 12 activists from Hong Kong who attempted to depart the city by boat two years prior. The other two books were allegories for the 2019 protests and a local doctors' strike in which they demanded that authorities close the borders with mainland China at the start of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Most 90-year-old individuals will like to ring in their birthday by sitting in a cosy home, surrounded by their loved ones, enjoying food and drinks and later getting to their bed early. However, for a Minnesota nonagenarian, celebrating her 91st birthday in such a manner was a strict no-no.

Ida Shannon, who turns 91 years old later this month, ditched the ordinary and went skydiving last Sunday to celebrate her life milestone.

"Life would be pretty dull if you didn't embrace adventures. I like taking risks. I think I was born that way," she said.

Ida, who had celebrated her 80th birthday by going zip-lining, had always dreamt of going skydiving as her next adventure.

"Someone asked me what I was going to do next, and without even thinking about it, I said, 'Oh, I'll just go skydiving,'" said Ida in an interview to CBS.

To make Shannon's dream come true, the members of her church stepped up and started to make the arrangement.

The church members collected money amongst themselves and managed to send Shannon aboard a plane so that she could jump thousands of feet down and make her dream a reality.

Daisy May, one of Ida's friends and a member of the church referred to her as real-life wonder woman. "She's like the real Wonder Woman. She's strong and loves people. We are family. She is like the grandmother I wish I had."

A test to identify whether someone has Parkinson's disease has been created by scientists using the hypersensitivity of a woman's sense of smell.

The test has been in development for years, ever since researchers discovered that Joy Milne could smell the illness. The Scottish woman, 72, from Perth, has an unusual ailment that enhances her sense of smell.

Twelve years before his sickness was discovered, at the age of 33, she realised that her late husband Les had a peculiar odour. This disease causes areas of the brain to progressively deteriorate over a long period of time.

The "woman who can smell Parkinson's" Milne described as a musky odour that was different from his typical odour.

Scientists were intrigued by her observation and began to investigate what she could smell and whether this could be used to identify individuals with neurological conditions.

Years later, researchers at the University of Manchester made a significant advancement when they created a test that uses a straightforward cotton bud that ran along the back of the neck to detect Parkinson's disease in patients.

To determine if someone has the condition, researchers can study the sample to look for chemicals connected to it.

Scientists are enthusiastic about the possibility of the NHS being able to use a straightforward test for the disease, even if research is still in its early stages.

Parkinson's disease cannot be diagnosed with a test; instead, symptoms and past medical history are used to make the determination.

Barran's team at the University of Manchester reported in 2019 that they have discovered disease-related chemicals in skin swabs. Now that they have this knowledge, scientists have created a test.

Scientists are determining whether the tests, which have been carried out successfully in research facilities, can be applied in hospital settings. If the test is effective, GPs may be able to send patients for Parkinson's tests through the NHS.

In response to questions from lawmakers on Wednesday, the new British Prime Minister Liz Truss said she would not impose a windfall tax to pay for any energy bill freeze intended to counteract sharp increases in the prices of gas and electricity.

Truss, who officially took over from Boris Johnson on Tuesday, stated that she would lay out her proposals for an economic support package on Thursday in order to prevent a crisis from worsening over the coming months.

She is apparently contemplating measures worth up to £130 billion ($150 billion) to freeze energy costs for struggling homes and businesses, many of which run the risk of going bankrupt this winter.

But when opposition Labour Party leader Keir Starmer questioned whether this would be paid for by a windfall tax on the earnings of energy corporations, Truss replied, "I am against a windfall tax."

"I believe it is the wrong thing to be putting companies off investing in the United Kingdom, just when we need to be growing the economy."

"This country will not be able to tax its way to growth," she continued.

With inflation already in double digits and at 40-year highs, the exchange set the tone for the discussion on how to deal with the anticipated economic hardship in the future.

There, it's been said premenstrual mood swings and anxiety are "key public health issue(s) globally".

Premenstrual symptoms are reported by more than 64 per cent of women globally during each menstrual cycle, reports IANS quoting a recent study.

28.61 per cent of women reported that premenstrual symptoms interfered with their daily activities every time they had a period, and another 34.84 per cent claimed that this happened sometimes.

Jacob Zuma, a former president of South Africa and one of those accused of corruption in a multi-million dollar arms deal that stretches back to 1999, has sued a journalist and the state prosecutor who is leading the case against him.

On Tuesday, Zuma launched a private prosecution against senior state prosecutor Billy Downer for leaking a medical report to a News24 journalist who then went on to publish it. The journalist Karyn Maughan has also been roped in the case.

As per a News24 report, the "charges relate to News24's publication of details of Zuma's medical condition, which were attached to court papers lodged at the KwaZulu-Natal High Court in Pietermaritzburg, last year."

Zuma contends that senior advocate Downer leaked the report to Maughan and this is in violation of the National Prosecuting Act. His lawyers had earlier contented that Downer is biased and had sought to have him removed from Zuma's case.

As per a News24 report, the "charges relate to News24's publication of details of Zuma's medical condition, which were attached to court papers lodged at the KwaZulu-Natal High Court in Pietermaritzburg, last year." His lawyers had earlier contented that Downer is biased and had sought to have him removed from Zuma's case. A matchmaking website, a BSE-listed company, has introduced RainbowLuv, a special platform that serves the entire LGBTQIA+ community, as a first in India.

According to the company, the numerous dating services currently offered are either exclusively for lesbians or gays, or they cater to gender binary persons and allow members of the community to join and search for matches.

Despite the fact that same-sex unions are illegal in India, the matchmaking platform informed that the LGBTIQ+ community has a good need for committed partnerships that have so far gone unsatisfied with the numerous dating portals.

There is a dearth of information on the group, but according to government statistics from 2012 based on self-enumeration or declarations made by community members, there are 2.5 million LGBT persons in India, according to Arjun Bhatia, chief marketing officer of matrimony.com.

Due to the community's sensitivity and ongoing vulnerability, the portal has procedures in place to stop incidents of verbal or physical abuse against its users. To do this, it requires all users to share one or more forms of official identification when registering. To verify the person's legitimacy, this is synchronised in the backend.

Additionally, there is an additional layer of selfie verification, which is reviewed by artificial intelligence and machine learning technology that the company uses, to check phoney profile concerns that arise in the majority of dating and marriage portals and applications.

Additionally, sending interest signals or starting discussions with other users of the programme is only available to paying users. And RainbowLUV will stop that, unlike many other similar apps where a paid member might obtain access to the mobile phones of the other members.

Prior to anyone having access to any personal contact information, the member must give permission. The user can build a profile and look for matches based on their sexual orientation, location, age, income, and occupation without paying, but they are unable to send EOI or start a discussion.

A new study by Lancet has found that India severely overuses antibiotics and a huge part of the formulations that the country's private sector uses aren't even approved by the Central drug regulator.

The private sector's use contributes to about 85-90 per cent of the total antibiotic use in India and more than 47 per cent of the formulations used in 2019 are not approved by the Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO), says the study published in The Lancet Regional Health-Southeast Asia as reported by PTI.

According to the study, cefixime 200 mg tablets (6.5 per cent) and azithromycin 500 mg tablets (7.5 per cent) were the two most popular antibiotic formulations in India during the year.

"Largely unrestricted over-the-counter sales of most antibiotics, manufacturing and marketing of many FDC and overlap in regulatory powers between national and state-level agencies complicate antibiotics availability, sales, and consumption in the country," said the authors of the study.

The over-the-counter sale of antibiotics is also giving rise to complications like antibiotic resistance.

United Airlines, one of the largest airline companies in the USA, has issued a warning to Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) that it will suspend its services at New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) if it does not receive permits for additional flights.

Reportedly, United Chief Executive Scott Kirby wrote a letter to FAA and its acting Administrator Billy Nolen, where in clear terms he demanded the needful.

"If we are not able to get additional allocations for multiple seasons, we will need to suspend service at JFK, effective at the end of October," wrote Kirby in the letter.

"That would obviously be a tough and frustrating step to take and one that we have worked really hard to prevent," he further added.

It is pertinent to note that ever since the airport reopened after a COVID-19-induced hiatus in 2021, United Airlines is only flying twice daily to San Francisco and Los Angeles from the airport. According to data, JFK is the busiest New York airport and a major airline only operating a small percentage of flights at the airport is not good for the business.

However, FAA took a measured stance in response to the letter and asserted that it "must consider airspace capacity and runway capacity to assess how changes would affect flights at nearby airports. Any additional slots at JFK would follow the FAA's well-established process of awarding them fairly and to increase competition."

Despite making infrastructure improvements such as widening the runways, and multi-entrance taxiways, FAA and Port Authority have not increased the airport's total flight capacity.

Moreover, United Airlines had leased its quota of 40 daily takeoffs and landings to Delta Airlines in two separate deals in 2014 and 2015. And since the deal is yet to expire in the foreseeable future, the airline has no option but to demand FAA to increase its slots.

Whales have always been thought of as the smartest of mammals. Now a study published by the Royal Society Open Science has found that humpback whales communicate using songs that traverse through the length and breadth of the ocean, as far as 8000 kilometres.

Reportedly, a team of researchers at Universidad San Francisco de Quito in Ecuador recorded songs first heard from the humpback whales off the coast of eastern Australia. Fast forward a few years and the same song was picked up all the way in Ecuador, suggesting that the voice travelled across the South Pacific Ocean.

“Half the globe is now vocally connected for whales. And that’s insane,” Ellen Garland, author of the study and a marine biologist at the University of St. Andrews was quoted as saying by the New York Times.

Read more: New Zealand rescuers save stranded dolphins using buckets and towels

Fascinatingly, the songs sung by the humpback whale may change over time. The authors of the study attributed the change to two different phenomenons viz. progressive cultural evolution and cultural revolution.

In the first category, the songs follow the basic evolutionary process wherein different whales subtract, add or delete their units and phrases in the song. The little changes in each iteration of the song slowly lead to a completely different version that then spreads around in the colony.

In the second category, a neighbouring population comes around with its novel song and the existing whale population quickly laps it up.

Researchers cited an example of a male song on the east coast of Australia singing a completely different song compared to the local whales. However, it matched the song sung on the west coast.

Within two years, all males month the east coast started singing the same song, suggesting that the cultural revolution amongst the whales was much more rapid than we had thought of previously.

“These really rapid cultural changes are not seen in any other animal species, it’s happened so fast.” added Garland.

Garland also asserted that these songs travelled when neighbouring groups of whales passed within an acoustic range of each other.

This passing usually happens when whales are leaving their breeding grounds and migrating to foraging grounds.

However, it is still unclear what the songs stand for. Whether the male whales use it as a mating call with females or to mediate male-to-male interaction or as a multi-message signal, it remains shrouded in clouds of mystery.

After the discovery of culturally inappropriate filters on social media applications sparked a backlash in New Zealand, the social media corporation that controls Snapchat removed filters that put photos of sacred Mori tattoos on users' faces.

According to a Radio New Zealand investigation, t'moko tattoo-themed filters are widely available on social media platforms like Instagram and Snapchat.

T-moko is a taonga, or treasure, for the indigenous people of New Zealand and symbolises the wearer's Mori ancestry.

The filters have reignited discussions about how sacred cultural artefacts are handled on tech platforms and whether or not New Zealand should give them stronger legal safeguards.

At the time of publication, The Guardian saw at least ten of these user-made Instagram filters, all of which had names that featured "Mori" or "moko." Instagram's parent company, Meta, did not reply to a request for comment.

After a New Zealand-based writer expressed concerns from the Mori community about the tools, Snap, which owns Snapchat, informed the Guardian that it had deleted one such filter, called a Lens, off its platform along with a duplicate.

The business informed the Guardian in an unnamed statement that "we encourage our community to create Lenses that are inclusive and any shared on Snapchat must comply with our community guidelines. These are clear that we prohibit content that demeans, defames, or promotes discrimination."

T moko is only for Mori. Since each is customised to the wearer's lineage, several social media users using the same filter exacerbated the "huge disrespect" brought on by the "highly offensive" gadgets, one expert claimed.

Secrets and unknown species abound in the waters of Earth's oceans. Among these mysterious species is one worm detected by scientists in 2020. Its iridescent colours reminded the discoverers so much of the king of rock'n'roll that they nicknamed it the "Elvis worm".

The sparkling Peinaleopolynoe were discovered 4,000 metres or 13,000 feet underwater in some of the Pacific ocean's deepest hydrothermal vents.

Because of their shimmering scales, which are reminiscent of the sequined jumpsuits worn by Elvis Presley, they have been referred to as "Elvis worms" for years.

Their name Peinaleopolynoe is derived from the Greek word peinaléos, which means hungry or famished. According to the Guardian, the hungry scale-worms got their name because the first time they were seen, they were gathered around a pile of food that researchers had left on the deep-sea floor as something of an experiment.

After a bumper hiring spree in the aftermath of the pandemic, the tech giants might be looking to go back on their decision. Google and Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai on Tuesday stated that he wants to make his company 20 per cent efficient while hinting at possible job cuts. “We want to make sure as a company, when you have fewer resources than before, you are prioritizing all the right things to be working on and your employees are really productive that they can actually have impact on the things they’re working on so that’s what we are spending our time on,” said Pichai. The Google boss further added that as a company they were looking to get 20 per cent more productive, “Across everything we do, we can be slower to make decisions. You look at it end-to-end and figure out how to make the company 20 per cent more productive.” Read more: Google to slow down hiring, says Sundar Pichai in a memo to staff Terming uncertainty around macroeconomics, Pichai acknowledged the company had become “slower” after its headcount ballooned. “The more we try to understand the macroeconomic, we feel very uncertain about it. The macroeconomic performance is correlated to ad spend, consumer spend and so on,” added the Google boss. It is pertinent to note that this is not the first time that Pichai has hinted at slashing the workforce. In July, Pichai wrote a memo to his employees where he asserted that the company will be “slowing down the pace of hiring for the rest of the year” Pichai said that the company will have to “be more entrepreneurial” and work with “greater urgency, sharper focus, and more hunger than we’ve shown on sunnier days” He added that the company “isn’t freezing hiring entirely; it’ll still hire engineering, technical and other critical roles”, but the pullback, he added, will mean “pausing development and re-deploying resources to higher priority areas”. "For the balance of 2022 and 2023, we'll focus our hiring on engineering, technical and other critical roles, and make sure the great talent we do hire is aligned with our long-term priorities," Pichai reportedly wrote in the memo. As reported by WION, a report released by Appsumer, an advertising analytics firm on Tuesday showed that Apple's competitors viz. Facebook and Google saw a 3 per cent and 1.7 per cent dip in the number of mobile apps advertising respectively. The study stated that more and more advertisers are willing to spend big bucks to advertise on Apple App Store, in addition to Apple News and Stocks. United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP) in its recent report has painted a grim picture of the workforce in the region. The report states that two-thirds of Asia-Pacific's workforce, 1.4 billion to be precise, is meandering on the verge of poverty by surviving on only $5.5 per day. The report, released at the seventh session of the Committee on Social Development also added that more than half the region's population is excluded from any social protection. “Our region spends less than half of the global average on social protection. Almost 60 per cent of the population has no social protection coverage against normal life events such as pregnancy, child-raising, sickness, disability, unemployment or simply getting old,” said Armida Salsiah Alisjahbana, executive secretary of ESCAP. Read more: Why is China so angry over UN report on Xinjiang? The vulnerability due to lack of social protection has far-reaching consequences. 85 million unprotected people have been pushed into extreme poverty, only managing on less than a meagre income of $1.9 per day. Meanwhile, 158 million of this class have plunged into moderate poverty, surviving on $3.2 a day. According to the report, Asia-Pacific's labour productivity has fallen below the global average. "During the pandemic, the lack of affordable health care and social protection contributed to pushing 243 million people into poverty," added the report. The report also took into measure the climate change the Asia-Pacific region was witnessing and its effect on the labour class. "The region is highly exposed to climate-induced natural disasters with detrimental welfare consequences for workers, as jobs disappear and businesses relocate." The workers in the informal sector, especially in the agriculture sector, constituting one-third of the labour force were the most vulnerable group due to climate change. To protect such class of citizens across the region, UNESCAP, on the sidelines of the meeting launched a Social Protection Online Toolbox (SPOT) that will help countries to broaden the social protection net for them. Liz Truss has won the keys to 10, Downing Street. Hours after her election, Priti Patel, Britain's home secretary resigned from her post as Truss would have eventually nicked her. However, experts believe that Patel is not going down without a fight. Read more: Liz Truss's Cabinet is UK’s first with no white man in top jobs Reportedly, Patel on Tuesday accused the foreign office of trying to block her Rwanda asylum plan after the official Twitter account of the office liked a tweet from Zarah Sultana, a Labour MP who called her resignation a 'good riddance'. She further added, “You were an unspeakably cruel home secretary and won’t be missed by anyone with a shred of decency.” Good riddance @PritiPatel. You were an unspeakably cruel Home Secretary and won’t be missed by anyone with a shred of decency 👋🏽 — Zarah Sultana MP (@zarahsultana) September 5, 2022 × It is pertinent to note that in April this year, Patel had brought the 'Rwanda Asylum Policy' under which aliens arriving in the UK through 'illegal' means would be sent to the African country of Rwanda to seek asylum. However, before Patel & co. could send the first deportation flight, it was grounded due to legal challenges. The incident happened in June and since then, not a single deportation has taken place as the case lingers on in the UK courts. According to Patel's close aides, the tweet liking by the foreign office was indicative of the official view it had taken on the issue as multiple bottlenecks ensured that her plan never really got off the ground. Read more: Over 1,300 migrants cross into the UK in a single day, setting an influx record However, this is certainly not the last we have seen of Patel. An avowed Thatcherite, Patel has made several comebacks in the past. She was sacked in 2017 by then PM Theresa May as international development secretary for holding unsanctioned meetings with the Israeli president. However, two years later in 2019, she landed the top job in Boris Johnson's cabinet. She narrowly avoided another bout of sacking after accusations came to the fore of her bullying the civil servants. Despite her name constantly doing the rounds in the names of ministers to be demoted in a cabinet reshuffle, Patel managed to hold her job. She is the most socially conservative of Johnson's senior ministers, voting against introducing same-sex marriage and remaining fiercely loyal to the former PM even when a flood of resignations ensued around him. Thus, those writing an obituary for Patel might want to tone down their enthusiasm. (With inputs from agencies) WATCH WION LIVE HERE:
