The US state of California is once again battling major wildfires as hot, sultry, and windy conditions continue to make rescue operations tougher. Reportedly, two people died on Monday after a wildfire broke out in the southern part of the state. The fire, nicknamed Fairview Fire started on Monday, shortly after 2 PM, and rapidly grew from there. According to reports, the fire had spread to an area of over 2,000 acres, engulfing the city of Hemet. However, only five per cent of the fire had been contained so far. "All these fires now have receptive fuel beds to burn. Now, when anything gets started it has that potential for exponential growth in a short period of time just because everything is so tinder dry." California Fire Battalion Chief Jon Heggie was quoted as saying by CNN. In pics| California wildfire continues to wreak havoc Last month it was the McKinney wildfire that wreaked havoc across the state. Reportedly, four people were killed in the blaze and thousands were displaced. According to local news reports, families of the victims have sued an Oregon-based utility company providing power in the northern part of the state for sparking the fire. Nearly a year after announcing its new ad policy, Apple may be bridging the gap between itself and Google and Facebook in the digital ads market, according to a recent study published by Appsumer, an advertising analytics firm. The study, based on online ad budgets of over 100 mobile app companies stated that advertisements on Apple's App store grew by 3.7 per cent to 94.8 per cent, compared to the 2021 Q2 data. Meanwhile, Apple's competitors viz. Facebook and Google saw a 3 per cent and 1.7 per cent dip in the number of mobile apps advertising respectively. The study makes it clear that more and more advertisers are willing to spend big bucks to advertise on App Store, in addition to Apple News and Stocks. Advertisers allocated almost 15 per cent of their ad budget to Apple while both Google and Facebook saw a decline. However, Apple remained unscathed as its advertising business grew 238 per cent to $3.7 billion in 2021. Moreover, buoyant by its advertising revenue, Apple is planning to add more advertisements to its first-party apps that come pre-installed on iPhone. In a precedent-breaking move, the Brazilian government on Tuesday levied a fine of $2.38 million on Apple and ordered the company to stop selling its iPhones without a battery charger in the South American country. According to a Reuters report, the fine was imposed by Brazil's ministry of justice which stated that the iPhone lacking an essential component was a "deliberate discriminatory practice against consumers". The ministry further ordered the cancellation of the sale of iPhone 12 and newer models while also suspending any other iPhone model that did not come bundled with the power charger. Read more: Apple's next big money-making idea: More ads in iPhones The Brazilian authorities outrightly rejected Apple's argument that removing the battery charger from its iPhones helped in reducing carbon emissions. It is yet to be seen if Apple complies with the Brazilian authorities, especially given that the new iPhone 14 launches in less than 24 hours. WATCH | iPhone 14 coming soon: Are you excited? | Tech It Out × It's not the first time that Apple has run into trouble for its decision. Earlier this year, a court in Brazil ordered Apple to pay a man $1,000 for not including a power adapter with his iPhone. Calling the practice a 'tie-sale', Judge Vanderlei Caires Pinheiro stated that "Apple obliged the consumer to purchase a second product of its exclusive manufacture which was an abusive and illegal commercial practice." Moreover, last year in October, a group of university students in China filed a lawsuit against the California-based company. In the lawsuit, the students argued that Apple was using 'concerns for environment' as an excuse to sell its MagSafe chargers separately. They further asserted that Apple's MagSafe chargers consumed more electricity than the wired ones, thereby nullifying the said 'environmental gains' by removing the shipping of chargers. It is pertinent to note that since 2020, Apple is selling its flagship product without a charger citing environmental concerns. Reportedly, the removal of chargers also helped Apple reduce the size of the iPhone's retail boxes which has, in turn, helped the company make more than $6 billion. Passengers travelling using airplanes might be in for a bumpy ride in the future. Scientists at the University of Reading have stated that severe in-flight turbulence may double or triple in the coming decades.

Passengers travelling using airplanes might be in for a bumpy ride in the future. Scientists at the University of Reading have stated that severe in-flight turbulence may double or triple in the coming decades. "We ran some computer simulations and found that severe turbulence could double or triple in the coming decades," Paul Williams, a professor at the University of Reading was quoted as saying by CNN. Professor Williams added that not only the frequency but the length of turbulences will also increase in the future. "Typically, on a transatlantic flight, you might expect 10 minutes of turbulence. I think that in a few decades this may increase to 20 minutes or to half an hour. The seat belt sign will be switched on a lot more, unfortunately for passengers," said Williams. In pics | Double-decker seats that can change airplane travel forever It is pertinent to note that there are different kinds of turbulence that one faces while onboard an airplane viz. light, moderate, and severe turbulence. Explaining the difference between the three, Professor Williams stated, "There's light turbulence, which is a bit of strain against your seat belt, but food service can continue.. Then there's moderate turbulence, a definite strain against seat belts, anything that's not secured will be dislodged, and walking is difficult; flight attendants are usually instructed to take their seats," Read more: Believe it or not: This Indian man made a plane during lockdown and flew family to Europe "The worst kind is severe turbulence: this is stronger than gravity, so it can pin you to your seat and if you're not wearing your seat belt you'll be tossed around inside the cabin. This is the kind of turbulence that causes serious Injuries, it's been known to break bones, for example," he further added. Additionally, there is a fourth kind of turbulence called 'clear air turbulence' which hits an airplane out of the blue without any visual cues such as storms or clouds. Often the pilots find it difficult to avoid such turbulences. According to Williams, clear air turbulence will increase significantly around the 2050-2080 period. According to data, over 65,000 airplanes suffer moderate turbulence in the US alone while 5,500 brave severe turbulence. The airplanes are built to withstand such turbulences but an increase in the frequency might force the aircraft engineers to modify the structural integrity of the planes. The passengers worried, however, might want to strap on their seat belts for the major part of their journeys so as to avoid any injuries caused by the turbulence. Two Swedish filmmakers named Henrik Evertsson and Linus Andersson have been found guilty of violating the sanctity of the grave site of MS Estonia which sank in the Baltic Sea in 1994 as 852 lost their lives. The Gothenburg district court levied fines on the two Swedes proportional to their income. Evertsson, the production manager has been told to pay a fine of $2,000 or 22,400 Swedish crowns while Andresdon who controlled the diving equipment will have to pay $1,800 or 18,800 Swedish crowns. In 2019, the filmmakers, part of a Discovery Networks documentary lowered a remote-operated submersible into the sea where MS Estonia lay submerged. The duo was piecing a documentary on the sinking of the ship and investigating if the initial cause given out to the public was indeed the truth or not. Read more: All you need to know about the Swedish parliamentary elections However, as it turns out, the film crew managed to find a massive hole in the hull of the ship, raising serious doubts over the previous investigations. In 1997, the official investigation concluded that the bow shield had failed, damaging the bow ramp and flooding the car deck. The judge, however, hearing the case stated that the shipwreck was a grave site for a large number of people and protecting its sanctity was more important. "There is a strong public interest in maintaining the grave peace around MS Estonia, which is the burial ground for a large number of people. Protecting the sanctity of the dead is more important than protecting freedom of expression and information," said judge Goran Lundahl. It is pertinent to note that MS Estonia, carrying 803 passengers and 186 crew was en route to Stockholm from Tallinn when it sunk. A year later in 1995, Sweden, Estonia, and Finland agreed to designate the spot where the ferry lay as a grave site after deciding not to salvage the wreck. Thus, it became illegal to disturb the site. The filmmakers used a German-flagged ship in international waters to reach the spot with their instruments as Germany had not signed the accord. Consequently, the two Swedes initially were not held accountable. However, later it was argued that 'Estonia Law' applied to the duo as they were Swedish. While the filmmakers have been fined, their findings, revealed in the documentary have forced Sweden and Estonia to open a fresh investigation into the case. A couple of days after announcing that Seimens was ready to fix the leaks in the Nord Stream 1 pipeline, Gazprom on Tuesday stated that the resumption of the pipeline depends on the German company.

When asked when the pipeline would resume pumping gas again, Gazprom's Deputy Chief Executive Vitaly Markelov on the sidelines of the Eastern Economic Forum in the far-east city of Vladivostok stated, "You should ask Siemens. They have to repair equipment first."

Markelov's statement comes in the backdrop of Siemens asserting that it could not comprehend Gazprom's presentation of the situation.

"We cannot comprehend this new representation based on the information provided to us over the weekend," said Siemens.

"Therefore, until further notice, our assessment is that the finding communicated to us does not represent a technical reason for stopping operation. Such leaks do not normally affect the operation of a turbine and can be sealed on site." it further added.

COVID infection that lasts for a prolonged duration, even if it is minor, may have dire consequences for patients and may increase the risk of heart attacks, brain strokes and even dementia, experts have warned.

This comes as growing cases of long Covid are being reported globally. According to a recent study, occurrences of neurological diseases and heart-related problems have increased by 60 per cent in patients with Covid.

What is Long Covid?

Patients with this particular type of Covid infection continue to have symptoms for an extended period of time—more than the typical 14–15 days.

Dr Ashok Seth, Chairman of Fortis Escorts Heart Institute, told ANI that there is a significant amount of data from the west that shows that heart attacks and strokes increased by 60 per cent over the course of a year in hundreds of thousands of patients studied.

"So we are very clear COVID, even though mild, may affect people for a longer duration up to a year and create increased incidents of heart attacks and strokes."

According to Dr Padma Srivastava, professor and senior neurologist at AIIMS in Delhi, COVID has developed over time to affect the brain and the nervous system in addition to the lungs.

"We also now know that there is a definitive entity called long Covid which means there are features which are coming up, persisting after Covid infection in three months. There is extensive research which is going on, all over the world," she said talking to ANI.
