Humanity's 'vampiric' overconsumption of its 'lifeblood' — water — is increasingly putting the resource at risk, warns the United Nations (UN) in a report published on Wednesday. The report was released just hours ahead of a major summit dealing with the issue. As per the report, about 10 per cent of the "world's population lives in a country where water stress has reached a high or critical level."

The report, which was published by UN-Water and UNESCO, warns that "scarcity is becoming endemic" due to overconsumption and pollution. It adds that global warming will further increase seasonal water shortages in areas with abundant water as well as those already strained.

In the report's foreword, United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, as per AFP, writes that the world is "blindly travelling a dangerous path" as "unsustainable water use, pollution and unchecked global warming are draining humanity's lifeblood."

"If nothing is done, it will be a business-as-usual scenario — it will keep on being between 40 per cent and 50 per cent of the population of the world that does not have access to sanitation and roughly 20-25 per cent of the world will not have access to safe water supply," said Richard Connor, lead author of the report while talking to AFP.

Humanity's 'vampiric' overconsumption of its 'lifeblood' — water — is increasingly putting the resource at risk, warns the United Nations (UN) in a report published on Wednesday. The report was released just hours ahead of a major summit dealing with the issue. As per the report, about 10 per cent of the "world's population lives in a country where water stress has reached a high or critical level." The report, which was published by UN-Water and UNESCO, warns that "scarcity is becoming endemic" due to overconsumption and pollution. It adds that global warming will further increase seasonal water shortages in areas with abundant water as well as those already strained. Watch | Global fresh water resources won't keep up with demand by 2030 In the report's foreword, United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, as per AFP, writes that the world is "blindly travelling a dangerous path" as "unsustainable water use, pollution and unchecked global warming are draining humanity's lifeblood." "If nothing is done, it will be a business-as-usual scenario — it will keep on being between 40 per cent and 50 per cent of the population of the world that does not have access to sanitation and roughly 20-25 per cent of the world will not have access to safe water supply," said Richard Connor, lead author of the report while talking to AFP.
New research has revealed that the tick-borne disease 'babesiosis' is becoming much more common in the United States. As per the recent CDC report, the research conducted from 2011 to 2019 shows that the cases of babesiosis have significantly increased in the northeastern states. In particular, Maine, New Hampshire, and Vermont are being considered endemic.

But what exactly is babesiosis, what has research found, and what are some preventive measures to avoid its spread? Take a look at it.

What is Babesiosis?

Babesiosis is a life-threatening and severe disease caused by microscopic parasites that infect red blood cells. It is commonly caused to humans through deer ticks, which are also known as black-legged ticks.

While for many infected it might feel fine or do not have any dangerous symptoms, some can be vulnerable to the disease.

According to CDC for many, this disease might just cause symptoms like fever, chills, sweats, headache, body aches, loss of appetite, nausea or even fatigue. However, if it gets worse, it might get life-threatening for them where some could have a weakened immune system or have another serious health condition like liver or kidney disease.

The disease was not considered an endemic in Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont until now.

What does CDC have to say?

The CDC considered babesiosis to be endemic only in Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Rhode Island and Wisconsin until now.

As per the report, the incidents of the disease have increased in New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Maine, Connecticut, and Vermont. The largest number of cases have been reported in Maine, Vermont, New Hampshire and Connecticut.

The CDC claimed that till now, 16,456 cases of babesiosis have been reported by 37 states from 2011 to 2019. The largest number of cases were reported in New York with 4,738 cases. While Massachusetts reported 4,136 cases, the second highest during the time period.

Babesiosis prevention and treatment:

The most common way to treat babesiosis is through a course of antibiotics. However, not all antibiotics will work for everyone.

A medical expert, Dr Adalja cited by Prevention says that a combination of atovaquone and azithromycin is the mainstay of the treatment, although clindamycin plus quinine can also be used.

Chinese President Xi Jinping met his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin on Monday in Moscow and said he was convinced that the Russian people will be voting en masse for the Kremlin chief in next year's presidential election. "I know Russia will hold a presidential election," said Xi in Mandarin. "Under your strong leadership, Russia has made great strides in its prosperous development. I am confident that the Russian people will continue to give you their firm support." After Xi's statement was translated, Putin looked the Chinese leader in the eye and gave a brief yet genuine smile. While Xi called Putin a 'dear friend', the latter jokingly said he was 'envious' of the progress made by Beijing in recent times. "In recent years, China has made a tremendous leap forward in its development," Putin said. "It arouses genuine interest all over the world, and even we envy you a little." However, Dmitry Peskov, Kremlin spokesman came out with a statement and said Xi did not specifically indicate that Putin would participate in next year's election. Notably, Putin has been the longest-serving leader of Russia since Josef Stalin. He ascended to power after Boris Yeltsin resigned in 1999.
It's a relief for India's Mumbai as it finally records "satisfactory" air quality on Tuesday (March 21) after experiencing unseasonal rains. According to the System of Air Quality and Weather Forecasting and Research (SAFAR), Mumbai's AQI at 11:55 am was 86. The city earlier had been recording "poor" and "very poor" air-quality index (AQI) for the last few days.

The SAFAR dashboard showed Worli's AQI at 66, Andheri's at 61, and Mazgaon's and Malad's AQI at 80 and 75 respectively. However, no change was reflected in Colaba's AQI, which remained at 139.

As per weather experts, an AQI between zero and 50 is considered to be 'GOOD,' 51-100 is 'SATISFACTORY' and 'MODERATE' is if it's between 101-200.

On the other hand, AQI between 201 and 300 is considered to be 'POOR,' 301-400 'VERY POOR' and 'SEVERE' if it's between 401 and 500.

It's very unusual for Mumbai to witness rains in the month of March. The Indian Meteorological Department, the westerly wind and moisture incursion from the Arabian Sea might be the reason behind this weather change.

Unseasonal heavy rains slashed the city on Tuesday morning, bringing the temperature down. According to a report in Mid-day, satellite cities like Thane, Mira-Bhayander and Vasai Virar too experienced heavy rains on Monday (March 20).

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) said some parts of Mumbai received 20-25 mm of rain early morning between 7 and 8 am on Tuesday. It added that Mondavi fire station and Byculla fire stations reported 28 mm and 23 mm rainfall respectively.

Eastern suburbs like Mulund, Gavanpada, and Bhandup Complex reported 20 mm and 19 mm rainfall respectively. While, in the Western suburbs, Dahisar fire station and Chincholi fire station reported 18 mm and 14 mm rainfall, respectively.

On Monday, Russia delivered enriched uranium to France. A cargo ship unloaded cylinders of uranium from Russia at the French port of Dunkirk. Western allies are clashing over the inclusion of uranium and other nuclear tech in sanctions. However, nuclear fuel shipments continue to make their way to the EU. As per Greenpeace, shipments of nuclear fuel are bankrolling the war in Ukraine and prolonging Europe’s energy dependence. The NGO said the latest shipment marked the seventh delivery of uranium from Russia to France since the start of Moscow's invasion of Ukraine. In a report earlier this month, Greenpeace criticised France's dependence on Russian nuclear power. It said France had received a third of the enriched uranium needed to operate nuclear power plants for one year from Russia. The French government denied the claims. The government said France does not depend in any way on Russia for the operation of its nuclear power plants.
