A dual Haitian-Chilean citizen has pleaded guilty to being part of the assassination of Haitian President Jovenel Moise, who was gunned down in his home in 2021. Rodolphe Jaar, one of 11 defendants in the case, has pleaded guilty to three charges. As per a plea statement signed by him on Friday, Jaar supplied arms and provided personnel to kidnap the slain president Moise. However, the initial plan turned into a murder plot. The statement revealed that a portion of the money provided by Jaar was spent on bribing some members of the president's security team and to purchase arms.

A digital artwork published on a billboard in Hong Kong has been taken down after it was revealed it had secret references to dissidents that are being tried by the city's court under the harsh National Security Law (NSL). US-based artist Patrick Amadon developed the art piece titled 'No Rioters' wherein he inserted names of the jailed activists in flashing text that naked human eyes cannot perceive. It is unclear if the Hong Kong authorities played a part in taking down the artwork or if the spooked department store owner took the action on own. After the piece was taken down, Amadon said he had achieved the objective he had set out when producing the art. "A few years ago, this art would have been a free and legal expression. For the government to take it down now objectively demonstrates how Hong Kong has changed and completes the art work," he was quoted as saying by BBC. Britain's King Charles III's state visit to France has been postponed due to a sea of protests in the country against the massively unpopular pension reform legislation to increase the retirement age. The king was scheduled to arrive in France on Sunday, which incidentally would have been his first visit as the newly crowned monarch. However, the Élysée Palace released a statement on Friday and said the decision to postpone the visit was taken after King Charles had a telephone conversation with French President Emmanuel Macron. "Given yesterday's announcement of a new national day of action against pension reform on Tuesday, March 28, in France, the visit of King Charles III, initially scheduled for March 26 to 29 in our country, will be postponed," read the statement. "This decision was taken by the French and British governments, after a telephone exchange between the President of the Republic and the King this morning, in order to be able to welcome His Majesty King Charles III under conditions which correspond to our relationship of friendship," it added. More than a million people took to the streets in different cities of France on Thursday in a continued protest against the Macron government's retirement policy. Up until Thursday, the French authorities were optimistic that the state visit will go ahead without any hiccups. However, after Macron gave a TV interview, it seemingly galvanised the protesters. Subsequently, the entrance to the town hall in Bordeaux was set alight, forcing the administration to chalk up new plans. As per Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin, 149 police officers and dozens of protesters were injured in clashes on Thursday. The government said that the population would double in 26 years if it wants to maintain such a growth rate, BBC reported.

The population rise comes following efforts taken by the Canadian government to ease labour shortages. It added that the surge in permanent and temporary immigrants also represents additional challenges such as housing, infrastructure, and transportation in some regions of the country, as per Statistics Canada.

In 2022, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced a plan to bring in 1.5 million immigrants per year by 2025. It was revealed that the country was betting big on immigration to fill the gap in its economy. Like many western countries, Canada has an ageing population and a low birth rate.

The country welcomed people affected by conflicts like the Russia-Ukraine war, the Turkey-Syria earthquakes, and the humanitarian crisis in Taliban-led Afghanistan.

Canada's population grew by over a million for the first time ever last year, the government said. According to data from Statistics Canada, the population increased from 38.5 million to 39.5 million people, with a growth rate of 2.7 per cent, which is the highest annual population growth rate since 1957. The government said that the population would double in 26 years if it wants to maintain such a growth rate, BBC reported. Also read | Canadian coffee chain Tim Hortons sued for serving 'superheated' tea in 'defective' cup The population rise comes following efforts taken by the Canadian government to ease labour shortages. Also read | India High Commissioner to Canada had to cancel appearance at function event over protests The agency said that in 2022, Canada welcomed 437,000 immigrants, while the number of temporary residents in the country increased by 607,782, accounting for a "record-breaking year for the processing of immigration applications." It further claimed that with this growing population, Canada might rank first among the 38 member countries of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development for 2022 population growth, while it already is the fastest-growing G7 country. Australian Federal Police (AFP) on Tuesday nabbed five members of a criminal syndicate group for orchestrating a black flight and carrying 52 kilogrammes of illegal methamphetamine worth $15 million into Australia.

Australian Federal Police (AFP) on Tuesday nabbed five members of a criminal syndicate group for orchestrating a black flight and carrying 52 kilogrammes of illegal methamphetamine worth $15 million into Australia. The five men had flown a twin-engine Beechcraft light aircraft back and forth from Papua New Guines (PNG) to Australia before being apprehended. The AFP officers were already in position when the 'black flight' that could not be detected by radar landed at a remote airstrip in Queensland. Images and videos of the incident released show the officials quickly circling the aircraft and nabbing the perpetrators. "All five men were arrested by specialist AFP and Queensland Police Service members shortly after the plane arrived at the Monto airstrip on Tuesday afternoon (March 21, 2023). Police located and seized five duffle bags concealed in the plane, containing about 52 kg methamphetamine," read the police report. The police released a statement adding that pilots Bernard Hamilton-Alexander, 51 and his co-pilot, John Horvath, 52 took off from Wilton, a rural area south of Sydney on Monday. They took a pitstop at Monto to refuel before landing in the town of Bulolo in Papua New Guinea. ALSO READ: Australia to legalise use of MDMA and magic mushrooms for treating depression There they picked five duffle bags filled with 52 kg of methamphetamine before returning to Monto where the officers were waiting. Four of the five men arrested, all from the state of New South Wales have already been produced before the magistrates' court. The final perpetrator is expected to be produced before the court on Thursday (March 23). The police added that the men charged were Transnational Serious Organised Crime (TSOC) members who routinely handled the import of methamphetamine to rural Queensland from PNG. "If you look at the size of this attempted importation that was essentially stopped, you're talking about 520,000 individual hits or deals. These men have not only allegedly imported a dangerous drug into Australia, but flying at low altitude without proper instructions poses a huge safety risk for other aircraft," said Detective Chief Superintendent Jason Weinstein ALSO READ | Cocaine worth $300 million with batman stickers found floating in New Zealand (With inputs from agencies) WATCH WION LIVE HERE:

Arrivederci! It's time for Domino's Pizza to say goodbye to Italy, just seven years after making its debut in the country, the fast food giant closed the last of its 29 stories in the Italian Peninsula after struggling to gain a foothold in the country, where pizza was born.

According to Bloomberg, Dominos was struggling to win locals' hearts just like it did in the United States.

Domino's tried winning hearts with "purely Italian" ingredients, including 100 per cent tomato sauce and mozzarella and other products like prosciutto di parma, and Gorgonzola. But its plans were scatted by the pandemic when local pizzerias took over by delivering in-person during the shutdown, CNBC reported.

It arrived in 2015 when it already had some 12,000 stores across the world.

Last year, it cited a significant increase in competition levels as the reason for its poor performance and earnings.

Following its exit, netizens on Twitter cheered, while making fun of it for even attempting to establish a foothold in the "homeland of pizza."

A user said, "This is great news. Why would a Country that makes the best pizzas on earth ever need a Domino's pizza chain? No one in their right mind that lives in or visits Italy would order a Domino's when every neighbourhood has a superior pizzeria."

The 52nd session of the UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC) was a platform for Kashmiri activists from India to voice their aspirations and concerns regarding cross-border terror. Shuib Lone, a former lawmaker and activist, highlighted the significant decline in violence in the region, largely due to the constitutional changes in 2019 and local government reforms.

"The families of those impacted by cross border militancy have come out to share their experience" but warned that Kashmir faces new challenges from "hybrid war...the online radicalization of youth in Kashmir, with events from Afghanistan and used as a pretext to draw Kashmiri youth in the international conspiracy theories," said Lone.

It's the holiest month of the Islamic calendar, Ramadan, when Muslims across the globe will be observing fast, even in space. Yes, you read it right. UAE astronaut Sultan al-Neyadi arrived at the space station on March 3 and the only question boggling him is how will he be ending his fast, as he sees 16 sunsets daily at the space station.

You must be wondering why 16. Here, is the answer.

For centuries, a setting sun has signalled the end of fasting with delicious meals. But what if the sun's clockwork changes as it does for astronauts riding aboard the International Space Station? The orbiting laboratory whips around the Earth at the speed of 27,600 kilometres per hour (27,600 miles per hour) giving the traveller 16 sunrises and sunsets each day. Dizzy right? Well, it's true.

'It's not compulsory'

Sultan al-Neyadi is one of the few Muslim astronauts who have travelled to space, and his mission will end in five months. He then will be the first astronaut from UAE to complete a long-duration stay in space.

While al-Neyadi is in space, Muslims on Earth will be observing fast in Ramadan and till the time he'll return, they will celebrate two festivals — Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha.

At a press conference before his space travel, al-Neyadi had said that six months is a long duration for a mission, which is a great responsibility. He added that since an 'astronaut' fits in the definition of 'traveller,' it excuses him from fasting during Ramadan.

"It's not compulsory if you're sick. So in that regard — anything that can jeopardise the mission or maybe put the crew member at risk — we’re actually allowed to to eat sufficient food to prevent any escalation of lack of food or nutrition or hydration."

He added that he'll wait and see how it goes.

Religion in Space:

Back in 1968, during NASA's Apollo 8 mission, astronauts read Genesis, the first book of the Bible, on their way to orbit the moon. Buzz Aldrin, who was with Neil Armstrong during their first landing in 1969 also took communion from the Eagle lunar lander, by taking a sip of wine and a bite of bread blessed by a Presbyterian minister back in Houston, just before taking their first steps on the moon.

In 2007, Sheikh Muszaphar Shukor, a Malaysian astronaut became the first practising Muslim to stay on the International Space Station and the Islamic National Fatwa Council of Malaysia issued special guidelines for him and other future Muslim astronauts.

The council also said that though his flight coincided with Ramadan, he can postpone until he returned to Earth or he could fast in accordance with the time zone of the place from which he had launched.

Among other religious observances that have taken place on board, include Christmas celebrations, Jewish holidays and Hanukkah.

The remainder would be covered under the US Foreign Military Financing programme, Nad said in a post on Facebook.

The deal includes parts, training and more than 500 AGM-114 Hellfire II missiles, he said.

"This offer is hugely advantageous and will significantly increase Slovakia's defence potential," Nad said.

It retired its fleet of MiG jets last summer and has relied on central European neighbours the Czech Republic, Poland, and Hungary for air defence support.

Slovakia will also supply part of its KUB air defence system.

Alongside the offer of US equipment, Slovakia will receive 250 million euros ($269 million) in European Union compensation, Nad said.

Nad said the helicopter offer was partly due to its support for neighbour Ukraine and also indirect compensation for the delayed delivery of F-16 fighter jets which the country ordered in 2018 that are now due to arrive in 2024.

UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak on Wednesday published his long-awaited tax documents, revealing he paid over $1.2 million (£1 million) in taxes over the last three financial years.

UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak on Wednesday published his long-awaited tax documents, revealing he paid over $1.2 million (£1 million) in taxes over the last three financial years. Instead of publishing the full account, 10 Downing Street published a summary of his income and tax affairs. Sunak's income totalled £1.9 million in 2021-22 while his tax bill stood at £432,493. Sunak's staggering income included £ 1.6 million in capital gains from a US-based investment fund while earning £330,000 from savings and dividends. In total, Sunak's capital gains income between 2019 and 2022 stood at £3.8 million while the investment income breached the £600,000 mark. The opposition leaders were quick to pounce on Sunak with labour leader Angela Rayner saying Sunak paid less tax than the working people. "(The returns) reveal a tax system designed by successive Tory governments in which the Prime Minister pays a far lower tax rate than working people who face the highest tax burden in 70 years," said Rayner. Meanwhile, Christine Jardine MP, the Liberal Democrat Cabinet Office spokesperson said the timing of the release of the report was suspicious as former PM Boris Johnson was under pressure for his partygate exploits. "After months of promising to release his tax returns, I don't understand why Rishi Sunak has snuck them out whilst the world is distracted with Boris Johnson's partygate grilling." WATCH | WION Dispatch: Video shows Rishi Sunak in a moving car without his seat belt on The Tory leader first pledged to show his tax returns when he was engaged in a competition with now-ousted Liz Truss for the PM seat in November last year. He became the first PM since David Cameron in 2016 to make his tax records public. Sunak has been under the microscope for his finances, primarily due to his marriage to the daughter of Indian billionaire and Infosys founder Narayan Murthy. Reports of Akshata Murthy, Sunak's wife touted to be wealthier than late British Queen Elizabeth II with assets worth $495 million also invited the spotlight on the Tory leader.
