The school authorities stated that the matter is being investigated by the police, and a review of the enrolment process of the district will be conducted by the authorities.

The issue was raised on Tuesday at a local education board meeting, where the attendees were informed by New Brunswick Public School District Superintendent Aubrey Johnson that Shin was caught faking her identity in the school.

"Last week, by filing some false documents, an adult female posing as a student was able to be enrolled in our high school," said Johnson. He stated that she attended a few classes and also held talks with guidance counsellors, who made efforts to dig into more information about her.

The false age of Shin was then discovered, said Johnson, adding that the police were immediately notified by the school.

Since then, the police have arrested her for submitting a false birth certificate "with the intent to enrol as a juvenile high-school student", stated the New Brunswick Police Department.

Ride-hailing platform Uber earlier this week paid the state of New Jersey $100 million in back taxes after the company tried being excessively clever to avoid paying benefits to its drivers.

Ride-hailing platform Uber earlier this week paid the state of New Jersey $100 million in back taxes after the company tried being excessively clever to avoid paying benefits to its drivers. Reportedly, New Jersey's Department of Labor and Workforce Development had fined Uber and its subsidiary Raiser in 2019 over unpaid unemployment taxes for the period 2014-2018. Uber classified its drivers as self-employed which allowed the company to withhold the required benefits. Consequently, the drivers lost the right to overtime pay, paid sick leave, family leave, overtime pay, and most importantly minimum wage. Remarking that the state will not tolerate such companies, New Jersey's acting attorney general, Matt Platkin said, "We will not tolerate companies that misclassify their workers, thereby denying employees vital benefits and dodging their obligation to contribute to programs that benefit the workforce." Read more: The Uber Files: Leaked docs reveal how Uber won access to world leaders, deceived investigators Meanwhile, Uber in a statement did not directly admit that it had avoided paying benefits to its employees. "Drivers in New Jersey and nationally are independent contractors who work when and where they want - an overwhelming amount do this kind of work because they value flexibility. We look forward to working with policymakers to deliver benefits while preserving the flexibility drivers want." read the statement from the company. Despite being a worldwide, major cab-riding platform, Uber has a rather shady record of violating the regulations and later coughing up fines to brush the matters under carpet. Read More: 550 women sue Uber over allegations including kidnapping and sexual assault As reported by WION, in July, the San Franciso based company admitted that it knew about the data breach in 2016 that affected 57 million customers and yet failed to inform the public or US Federal Trade Commission (FTC). Uber only confessed to the US prosecutors about its crime so as to avoid being levelled with criminal charges. It is pertinent to note that Uber had to pay a fine of $148 million to all 50 US states in September 2018, to settle the claims. However, given that Uber's market value amounted to $76 billion in the same year, many experts called it a mockery of the system. In a rather welcome move to make higher education accessible to all, New jersey's Princeton University earlier this week announced that students whose parents earn less than $100,000 per year will have to no longer pay any expenses to attend college. The move is aimed at increasing the 'socioeconomic diversity' of the Ivy League campus, according to the school administrators. Princeton University, whose notable alumni include Former First lady Michelle Obama, Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, and Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor amongst others will no longer accept any payment from students belonging to the aforementioned income bracket. The move is expected to help over 25 per cent of the university's undergraduates. Reportedly, over 1,500 students will receive full financial aid that covers their tuition, room, and board expenses. "One of Princeton's defining values is our commitment to ensure that talented students from all backgrounds can not only afford a Princeton education but can flourish on our campus and in the world beyond it," stated Christopher L. Eisgruber, Princeton's president. Read more: US Supreme Court permits Jewish university to temporarily deny recognition to LGBTQ students It is pertinent to note that earlier only families earning less than $65,000 used to receive full financial aid coverage. In addition to lowering the ceiling for availing financial help, the University has also done away with the annual student contribution. Under this contribution, students were expected to pay a portion of tuition and expenses with their own savings and on-campus work. Instead, students will have increased financial aid for books and other personal allowance, "These improvements to our aid packages, made possible by the sustained generosity of our alumni and friends, will enhance the experiences of students during their time at Princeton and their choices and impact after they graduate." President Eisgruber further added. An Indian-American family has installed a life-size statue of Bollywood superstar Amitabh Bachchan at their home in the Edison City of New Jersey. Some 600 people gathered outside the house of Rinku and Gopi Seth in Edison, often called Little India for being home to a significantly large Indian-American population, when the statue was formally unveiled by eminent community leader Albert Jasani.

The status is placed inside a large glass box. The ceremony was accompanied by bursting of fire-crackers and impromptu dance by a fan club of the Indian superstar. "He is nothing less than a god to me and my wife," Gopi Seth, who is an internet security engineer, told PTI.

"The biggest thing that inspires me about him is not only his reel life but also the real life, how he manages himself in public, how he conveys and communicates, everything you know. He is very down-to-earth. He takes care of his fans. He is not like so many other stars. This is why I thought I should have his status outside of my house," Seth said.

Seth, who arrived in the US from Dahod in eastern Gujarat in 1990, has been running www.BigBEFamily.Com, a website for "Big B Extended Family", for the past three decades. The website, among other things, he said is a repository of the global fans of Amitabh Bachchan. The database is shared with the 79-year-old Bollywood superstar.

According to Seth, Bachchan is aware about the statue. Seth said the superstar told him he does not deserve this kind of treatment, but did not stop him from doing so.

The life-size statue which shows Bachchan seated in his 'Kaun Banega Crorepati' mode was specially designed and made in Rajasthan and then shipped to the United States. The entire project, Seth said, cost him more than USD75,000 (about Rs 60 lakhs).

1.5 years after New Jersey residents voted to legalise the sale of cannabis in the state, seven medical-marijuana companies have been given clearance to start selling their products to all adults.

As per a report by the New York Times, this move opens the door to New York’s first legal marijuana sales and makes New Jersey the second state on the East coast to fully authorise cannabis sales to adults.

For years, medical marijuana dispensaries in the state were only allowed to sell cannabis to people who had received permission from a doctor to use it for medicinal purposes.

Recreational adult-use sales will be allowed to begin as soon as each of the seven enterprises pays more than $1 million in costs linked with the increased licenses and meets other bureaucratic conditions.

Thirteen dispensaries have been approved across New Jersey, including six within a half-hour drive of New York City.

Only the seven existing medical marijuana companies, which are mostly operated by major multistate and international cannabis corporations, are affected by Monday's decision.

Firefighters continued to battle a large blaze Saturday morning at a chemical plant in Passaic, New Jersey, more than 14 hours after it erupted, sending towering flames into the sky and clouds of smoke wafting through the region.

By 11 a.m., the fire had been downgraded to a four-alarm response from an 11-alarm response, but bitter low temperatures created other problems as firefighters contended with frozen hydrants and hazardous conditions.

City officials said that the worst outcome had been avoided so far: The fire did not reach the portion of the plant that houses large amounts of chemical products, and there were no major injuries.

Residents were urged to keep their windows shut, but the city’s mayor said Saturday morning that the situation did not require them to evacuate the area.

“It’s one of the worst fires I’ve experienced as mayor because of the potential,” Mayor Hector Lora said in a phone interview around 10:30 a.m. “It had the potential to be the worst in our city. We would be looking just at evacuating hundreds and hundreds of people had it reached the chemical section.”

The blaze erupted just after 8:30 p.m. Friday at the Majestic Industries warehouse, which houses Qualco, a company that manufactures chlorine pellets for swimming pools. The facility can store more than 100,000 pounds of the product.

The website for Qualco appeared to be down Saturday morning, and a representative could not immediately be reached.

The building was largely empty at the time of the fire, with only one security guard present, officials said. More than 200 firefighters from around the region were sent to Passaic, a city of about 70,000 residents that is roughly 10 miles from Manhattan.

The cause of the fire remained unknown. Officials said inspectors would not be able to begin making a determination until the situation was under control.

Lora said some similar fires at plants in the area had been caused by an increased use of heaters and equipment in the cold weather months but emphasized that it was not clear if that was the case Friday.

The mayor and state environmental officials said that toxic fumes were not being emitted and that air quality readings in the area remained within state and federal limits.

“We’re going to move forward with more permanent setups to make sure the air quality in the area is continually under the standards,” said Ken Pincus, the city’s health officer.

Still, weather conditions offered new challenges for firefighters Saturday morning.

The direction of the wind Friday night sent smoke and flames directly up into the air, Lora said, and was also helping to keep the blaze alive Saturday.

“The winds last night, I would say, were our best friend,” Lora said. “This morning it could become our worst enemy as it continues to feed the fire.”

A section of the more than 200,000-square-foot building collapsed, and fire officials said they were concerned about structural issues in other areas.

It was unclear how close the blaze had been to affecting the largest supply of chemicals. Only one firefighter reported a minor injury to his eye, officials said, and no residents were injured.

About 900 families live in a housing complex near the plant, Lora said, and would have needed to leave if conditions had worsened.

“Where would we put them? Where do you take them when the air quality is a concern every area that you turn?” Lora said. “The building can be replaced, but human life cannot be. That everyone’s safe is what I’m most grateful for right now.”

The blaze sent billows of smoke through the region Friday night, and New York City officials said residents there might see or smell smoke.

Video posted on social media shows a large ball of fire erupting along the side of a highway as thick clouds of smoke roar into the sky. The flames drew crowds of onlookers, some of whom reported hearing explosions and seeing sparks.

Lora said he had spoken to Gov. Phil Murphy, who dispatched state environmental and emergency management officials to the scene.

Murphy said on Twitter on Friday that he was urging “everyone in Passaic to stay safe.”

“Praying for the safety of our first responders on the scene,” he wrote.

US President Joe Biden continued his tour of damage caused by Hurricane Ida, traveling to New York and New Jersey to see the first-hand devastation caused by the massive storm inflicted on the Northeast.

Biden tours flood-hit area, calls for action on climate change

The aftermath of Hurricane Ida, which walloped the region with record-breaking rain days after one of the strongest US hurricanes on record hit the Gulf Coast, left a surprised US East Coast with a rising death toll, swelling rivers, and wreckage.

The storm killed at least 18 people from Maryland to New York on Wednesday night as basement apartments suddenly filled with water, rivers and creeks swelled to record levels, and streets turned into car-swallowing canals in an area that hadn't expected a significant blow from the no-longer-hurricane.

On Wednesday night, New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio called the floods and weather a "historic weather event," and the National Weather Service issued a flash flood warning for the first time in the city.

As the leftovers of the tropical storm delivered torrential rain, the potential of flash floods, and tornadoes to sections of the northern mid-Atlantic, nearly all New York City subway lines were suspended. In reaction to Ida, New Jersey issued a state of emergency. The National Weather Service issued five flash flood warnings Friday evening, spanning from Philadelphia to northern New Jersey. Updated observed rainfall totals for the last 48 hours ending 11 pm Wednesday September 1st. Most of this rain has fallen during the last 12-24 hours. We needed to increase the color scale values from the map we previously posted with totals through 8 pm. pic.twitter.com/B9gIPnLsTw — NWS Eastern Region (@NWSEastern) September 2, 2021 × New York City was also flooded, with photographs on social media showing water pouring over subway platforms and trains. The Metropolitan Transit Authority announced that due to the floods, subway service was "very limited." The mayor of New York City has urged residents not to go outside. We’re keeping our eyes on our power grid. We’ve seen about 5,300 customers without power. We expect the rain to stop in the next few hours. But until then, again, if you’re not inside, get inside. — Mayor Bill de Blasio (@NYCMayor) September 2, 2021 × "Please stay off the streets tonight and let our first responders and emergency services get their work done. If you're thinking of going outside, don't. Stay off the subways. Stay off the roads. Don't drive into these heavy waters. Stay inside", he said on Twitter. (With inputs from agencies)

The event has now been granted an exemption by the UK government as outlined in The Health Protection (Corona Virus, International Travel, and Operator Liability) Regulations 2021, released on 17 May 2021.

As per the bio-safety protocols established for the event, in line with UK government and Public Health England requirements, the Indian Men’s team will arrive in the UK on 3 June 2021 via a charter flight and carrying evidence of a negative PCR Test. Prior to traveling, the party will have spent 14 days in a bio-secure environment in India during which regular testing will have taken place. Upon landing, they will proceed directly to the on-site hotel at the Hampshire Bowl where they will be tested again before commencing a period of managed isolation.

Restaurants in New York City and New Jersey will be able to increase indoor dining to 50% of capacity starting March 19, the governors of New York and New Jersey said Wednesday.

The announcement of the relaxed limits comes as New York and New Jersey continue to lead the nation in new coronavirus cases. The states are both reporting a seven-day average of 37 new virus cases a day for every 100,000 residents, according to a New York Times database.

The change — which will take effect two days after St. Patrick’s Day, traditionally a busy day for restaurants and bars — will bring both places into line with dining limits in Connecticut and Pennsylvania.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo said that his decision to expand dining in New York City was made “in partnership” with New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy, a fellow Democrat.

“We will continue to follow the science and react accordingly,” Cuomo said in a news release issued by both governors.

Cuomo had already announced that capacity limits for restaurants statewide outside New York City could expand March 19 to 75%, from 50%.

The new half-capacity limit in New Jersey will also apply to casinos, salons and gyms. In addition, the maximum number of people permitted at private indoor gatherings in New Jersey is increasing to 25 people from 10. Outdoor gatherings can include 50 people, up from 25.

“We believe that when all factors are weighed, we can make this expansion without leading to undue further stress on our health care system,” Murphy said.

New Jersey was one of the last states to permit indoor dining to restart, and Murphy has faced pressure to expand capacity limits.

In New York City, restaurants have been operating with limited indoor capacity for months, including a shutdown from December to February when cases started to rise again. Restaurants are allowed to serve diners inside at 35% capacity, up from 25% a few weeks ago.

The New York City Hospitality Alliance, an industry group, praised the new guidelines, saying they would provide much-needed relief to struggling restaurants.

“While city restaurants may not increase occupancy to 75%, like restaurants are safely doing throughout the rest of the state,” Andrew Rigie, the group’s executive director, said Wednesday, being able to go to 50% capacity in the city “is still welcome news to the battered restaurant industry.”

After the announcement Wednesday, employees at Pizza Moto, a pizzeria between Carroll Gardens and Red Hook in Brooklyn, gathered to discuss what it would mean for the restaurant. Pizza Moto opened for indoor dining for just a few weeks late last year before the shutdown in December.

Joe Blissen, the restaurant’s general manager, said that he believed Pizza Moto could safely restart indoor dining at 50% capacity because most of the staff would have received their second vaccines by March 19.

“We are just trying to be cautious to make sure everything is nice, clean and safe,” said Blissen, who got his second shot this week. “It’s reassuring to us that at least our staff will be safe.”

Chris Labropoulos, who works at the Buccaneer Diner in East Elmhurst, Queens, said that an increase to 50% would have little impact, because few people choose to dine indoors there. He could not recall the last time the diner, which opened in 1976, had reached maximum capacity under the state’s pandemic guidelines.

“A lot of people don’t come in as it is,” Labropoulos said, adding that most orders are for delivery or pickup.

In New Jersey, Murphy last eased restrictions on indoor dining before the Super Bowl, when he raised the limit to 35% and ended a 10 p.m. curfew.

Diners must continue to wear masks when not seated at tables, and seating at bars in New Jersey remains prohibited.

“Unlike some states, which are prioritizing, frankly, flat-out politics over public health — Texas and Mississippi come to mind — our mask mandate remains in place,” Murphy said.

Texas’ mask mandate ended Wednesday. Mississippi eliminated its mask rules a week ago over objections from federal health officials, who warned the step was premature.

Over the past week, there were an average of 3,322 new cases of the virus reported each day in New Jersey and 7,177 in New York, fueled in part by the spread of virus variants.

Researchers with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention released a study Friday that found that counties opening restaurants for on-premises dining — indoors or outdoors — saw a rise in daily infections about six weeks later, and an increase in COVID-19 death rates about two months later.

The study does not prove cause and effect, but the findings square with other research showing that masks prevent infection and that indoor spaces foster the spread of the virus through aerosols, tiny respiratory particles that linger in the air.

The US state of New Jersey will enact a legislation that will make college and universities more affordable for the children of H-1B visa holders, mostly Indian IT professionals, bringing a huge financial relief to them.

New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy on Tuesday signed the legislation 'S2555', allowing New Jersey students, who are the children of H-1B visa holders, to qualify for in-state tuition at public institutions of higher education.

A majority of H-1B visa holders are Indians and this legislation comes as a significant relief to them, amidst an environment of stringent immigration laws and scrutiny under the Trump administration.

"New Jerseyans deserve equal access to higher education, and today we are taking another step towards making that possible. I'm proud to sign the legislation to help our students achieve their education goals, pursue a successful future and live their dreams here in their home state," Murphy said.

The legislation exempts dependent students whose parents or guardians hold H-1B visas from paying out-of-state tuition provided they meet certain criteria, including having graduated from a New Jersey high school and having attended a New Jersey high school for at least three years. New Jersey is home to prestigious institutions such as Princeton University.

Secretary of Higher Education Zakiya Smith Ellis said New Jersey is working to make college affordable for New Jerseyans and the legislation will expand postsecondary opportunities to more residents such as dependents of H-1B visa holders.

India's Deputy Consul General in New York Shatru Sinha welcomed the legislation, saying in a tweet that it is an "important initiative for the Indian community".

Primary sponsors of the legislation include Indian-American Democratic Senator Vin Gopal, Senator M Teresa Ruiz and Assembly members Raj Mukherji, Daniel Benson, and Robert Karabinchak.

President and CEO of Edison-based health technology company HealthEC Arthur Kapoor welcomed the legislation, saying it will tremendously benefit the Indian diaspora in New Jersey.

"Indian diaspora welcomes this bill since H-1B visa holders pay enormous amounts of taxes as well as social security contributions which they are never able to use as they return to India before they are eligible to receive benefits. This bill will allow their kids access to the best education," Kapoor said.

Indians have among the longest wait times for Green Cards. While school education from kindergarten to grade 12 is free in American public schools, non-citizens and immigrant children have to pay exorbitant fees to study in colleges and universities, adding years-long student debts to their finances.

Gopal said when someone comes to New Jersey on an H-1B visa, they're bringing their own unique expertise, intellect and insight to the challenges and opportunities the state faces.

"But when we deny their children the opportunity to access an affordable college education right here at home, we're shutting the door on a whole new generation of brilliance and talent. When we make higher education more affordable to these kids, we're supporting their academic pursuits while encouraging them to cultivate and apply their skills right here in the Garden State," referring to the nickname by which New Jersey is known.

Edison School Board Member Jerry Shi said while waiting to get approval on their green cards, these H-1B students' parents are also taxpayers.

"Providing their children with in-state tuition will help reducing the burden of college tuition for the studies and their parents at the same time allowing the state to keep the talent in NJ," Shi said.

New Jersey Economic Development Authority Chief Executive Officer Tim Sullivan said levelling the playing field by making higher education more affordable for children of H-1B visa holders is not only the right thing to do, "but also makes sense from an economic development standpoint".

Ruiz said H-1B visas have one of the longest waitlists for citizenship and unfortunately, until now, if a student's parent has an H-1B visa they were ineligible for in-state tuition.

"This law will make the dream of achieving a college degree a reality for many around the state by allowing them to access in-state tuition rates," Ruiz said.

"Individuals who are here through an H-1B visa could be here for many years with their families, raising their children in the state," said Assembly members Mukherji, Benson and Karabinchak.

"Broadening access to our colleges and universities in-state tuition is worthy of the specialty work and type of service they have committed to while living in New Jersey," they said.

Professor of Education at Fairleigh Dickinson University Khyati Y Joshi, whose research area is Immigration and South Asian Americans, recalled her experience of seeing how college affordability affects students' academic performance and how college debt limits their choices in adulthood.

"The young people who will benefit from this bill have lived in New Jersey most of their lives. We've invested in their K-12 education and it's smart to continue the investment of keeping them here in New Jersey," Joshi said.

Alphaori Technologies CEO Balaji Sankaran said that as a first generation immigrant who has gone through the entire process to becoming a permanent resident, he can vouch that this bill will be a "huge support for H-1B families to provide better education for their kids and create amazing, productive future citizens".

Severe wind and rain in the northeastern United States left thousands without power on Tuesday, as a record-breaking heatwave ebbed and a flash flood threat moved south with the storm.

Up to 4 inches (10 cm) of rain-drenched New York's eastern Long Island suburbs, while the widespread storm dumped as much as 8 inches (20 cm) of wetness on Port Arthur, Texas, said meteorologist David Roth of the National Weather Service's Weather Prediction Center.

Airlines cancelled more than 300 flights in the United States, with the most affected airports throughout the New York area as well as North Carolina, according to FlightAware.com.

"Today we are expecting the flash flood risk to shift to North Carolina, Virginia, anywhere in the Southeast as the front continues to shift southward," Roth said, noting the storm was likely to dry out by evening.

Late Monday and early Tuesday, flash floods swamped Long Island and other New York urban areas drenched by the storm, he said.

"It hits the pavement and it runs off. Asphalt is not known for absorbing water," Roth said.

Further north, the National Weather Service confirmed a rare tornado touched down in South Yarmouth, Massachusetts, on Cape Cod.

Utilities were scrambling to restore electricity to hundreds of communities where torrential weather downed tree limbs, knocking out power.

Overnight, more than 600,000 customers were out in Michigan and more than 200,000 lost power in New Jersey. Utility DTE in Michigan said more than 100,000 remained out on Tuesday, but it would restore 90 per cent of all storm-related outages by the end of the day.

New Jersey's hardest hit utility, FirstEnergy, was still assessing the situation and did not have an estimated return to service time for all its customers without power.

New York City experienced its second successive weekend of blackouts after a July 13 outage left more than 73,000 homes and businesses without power for about three hours.

The weekend heatwave that blanketed about a third of the US population brought thunderstorms along with cooling rain when it burst on Monday, the National Weather Service said.

Some winds gusted up to 80 mph (129 kph), said meteorologist Bob Oravec of the National Weather Service's Weather Prediction Center in Maryland.

"The good news is that the heatwave is over," Oravec said. "It's cooled down."
