A young Nazi sympathiser who obtained bomb-making instructions has been ordered to read classic classics such as "Pride and Prejudice."

Judge Timothy Spencer QC told 21-year-old Ben John, he could stay out of prison as long as he steered clear of white-supremacy literature and read works and plays by Jane Austen, William Shakespeare, Thomas Hardy and Charles Dickens.

After evading jail "by the skin of his teeth," the former De Montfort University student will have to come to court every four months to be tested on his reading by the judge.

The Leicester Mercury stated that John was recognised as a terror threat days after his 18th birthday and referred to the Prevent programme, yet he continued to download "repellent" rightwing documents.

He also penned a letter in which he railed against gays, immigrants, and leftists.

On August 11, he was found guilty by a jury of possessing information likely to be useful in planning a terrorist attack, a charge that carries a maximum term of 15 years in prison.

According to the judge, John should have turned away from his "obsessive infatuation" with the extreme right, but instead wrote a letter claiming to be a member of the "Lincoln fascist underground" and expressing contempt for the LGBT community and immigration.

John was pursuing a criminology and psychology degree at the University of Leicester when he was arrested in January 2020.

John was dubbed a "sad fantasist" by the judge, who claimed he had no terrorist objectives and was unlikely to hurt anyone.

At the sentencing hearing, he was freed from detention after being held on remand since August 11 for violating his bail conditions.

100-year-old former Nazi camp guard to stand trial in Germany

Police in Greece on Thursday arrested the deputy leader of neo-Nazi group Golden Dawn who had evaded justice since he was sentenced to over 13 years in jail in October, a police source said.

Christos Pappas had been on the run since a landmark trial handed down sentences to more than 50 Golden Dawn defendants on charges including running a criminal organisation, murder, assault and illegal weapons possession.

Sentenced to prison for his leading role in running the outfit, the 59-year-old Pappas was arrested at a home in the Athens district of Zografou, a police source told AFP.

A police statement said Pappas would be taken to a prosecutor on Friday.

A 52-year-old woman allegedly hiding him in her home was also arrested, the statement said.

The moustachioed former furniture store owner, whose lieutenant general father was part of the 1967 army coup that installed a seven-year dictatorship in Greece, Pappas was considered a leading ideologue of Golden Dawn.

He is a noted fan of Italian dictator Benito Mussolini and a collector of fascist memorabilia.

Pappas was the last Golden Dawn cadre to evade justice, after former senior member Ioannis Lagos, a member of the European Parliament, was extradited from Belgium in May.

He had made it clear through his legal representation that he had not intended to turn himself in, hoping to secure a lighter sentence on appeal.

Pappas had also escaped arrest in 2013, when senior Golden Dawn members had been rounded up following the murder of anti-fascist rapper Pavlos Fyssas -- the crime that led to the organisation's undoing.

At the time, police searching Pappas' home had found swastika flags, two German army helmets and bottles stamped with images of Benito Mussolini.

The Golden Dawn trial, which began in 2015, has been described as one of the most significant in Greek political history.

The court accepted that the openly xenophobic and anti-Semitic group operated under a military-style leadership that encouraged the beating of migrants and political opponents.

Knuckle dusters, crowbars, knives

Prosecutors outlined how Golden Dawn set up militias who roamed the streets, often armed with knuckle dusters, crowbars and knives.

Other crimes tied to the group include the murder of a Pakistani migrant and the beatings of four Egyptian fishermen in 2012 and a group of Communist unionists in 2013.

The organisation's founder and long-term leader Nikos Michaloliakos has also been sentenced to more than 13 years in prison, alongside several other senior party members.

The former fringe party won 18 seats in parliament in 2012 after tapping into anti-austerity and anti-migrant anger during Greece's decade-long debt crisis.

At the height of its power in 2013, the party was polling at 10 per cent, making it Greece's third most popular party.

But its influence began to ebb as the group's criminal activities came to light in trial testimony.

It failed to win a single seat in the last parliamentary election in 2019.

Fugitive Greek neo-Nazi deputy leader caught, says police

Eighty years ago on Thursday, British lawmakers driven from their debating chamber by World War Two Nazi bombs secretly set up a new home less than 100 yards away, from where Prime Minister Winston Churchill ran the country's wartime government.

Unbeknown to the British public, on June 24, 1941, elected lawmakers from the green-benched House of Commons moved onto the red benches of the House of Lords chamber and remained there for nine years.

From this lavishly-decorated but clandestine setting they debated and legislated the war effort, and later passed plans to rebuild and reshape post-war Britain. The move was not officially acknowledged until after the war.

The emergency operation was set up after the bombing of the House of Commons debating chamber during a May 1941 air raid.

"Churchill went into the Commons chamber and he looked at the destruction and the one thing he said was 'Parliament will sit`' - he didn't quite know where, but thanks to the Lords, it was here," said House of Commons Speaker Lindsay Hoyle, speaking from within the heavily gilded Lords chamber.

Although only a short distance apart, the Commons and the Lords are usually separated by centuries of tradition in which the Commons proudly defends its independence from the British monarchy and its lawmaking supremacy over the unelected Lords.

But, the current speakers from both houses, Hoyle and his Lords counterpart John McFall, celebrated the anniversary this week in a display of unity to show the strength of Britain's democratic system.

"It demonstrates that in time of need, in time of crisis, that both houses work together," McFall said.

The little-known chapter in British wartime history required permission from King George VI, whose robing room in Westminster Palace was used by the displaced Lords to perform their constitutional role of scrutinising the government's work.

The move to the Lords was not without hitches.

Stained glass windows designed by Augustus Pugin had to be covered to block out light visible to German bombers. Lawmakers complained it was too hot in summer, too cold in winter and hard to hear each other in the high-ceilinged chamber lined with statues of medieval knights.

A rebuilt Commons debating chamber was reopened in 1950.

According to Lords clerks, Churchill left a physical legacy in the chamber in the form of a small dent caused by the oratorical flourish of thumping his signet ring into the table to punctuate his most powerful speeches.

Britain's 'secret parliament' celebrates its 80th birthday

Some 30 German soldiers are being recalled from service in Lithuania, with ringleaders facing immediate dismissal, after they were accused of making racist and anti-Semitic remarks and of sexual violence, a German military spokesperson said.

The soldiers were in Lithuania as part of NATO's Enhanced Forward Presence mission providing protection to Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia by deterring Russia.

Der Spiegel earlier reported that some German soldiers had got so drunk in a hotel that military police had to be called. Further investigations found that soldiers had sung a birthday song for Nazi leader Adolf Hitler at an earlier gathering.

Beyond violating their oaths, the soldiers were accused of "giving offence with racist and anti-Semitic overtones and showing extremist behaviour," the spokesperson said. They would be back in Germany on Thursday.

"Such behaviour is not only inexcusable but brings shame on us all," she added.

Much of Germany's post-war foreign policy has been focused on showing atonement for the crimes of Hitler's Third Reich, which murdered many millions in the Holocaust of Europe's Jews, one of the worst crimes in human history.

Numerous instances where some members of the police and the military were found showing Nazi sympathies have garnered enormous attention from authorities and the media.

Germany's deployment in the eastern Baltic has added sensitivity since its soldiers last served there in World War Two, where they and members of the German SS committed some of the war's bloodiest crimes in what were then the western marches of the Soviet Union.

The investigation had also found that 569 rounds of ammunition were missing from inventories, though this could have been due to soldiers miscounting at the end of a firing exercise.

The German military's General Inspector had apologised to his Lithuanian counterpart, the spokesperson said.

Three members of a neo-Nazi group arrested in eastern France on suspicion of planning an attack on a masonic lodge have been charged, a judicial source said Saturday.

The suspects, two men aged 29 and 56 and a 53-year-old woman, were indicted on Friday evening by a Paris anti-terrorist judge on suspicion of forming a "terrorist criminal association", the source added.

Three others also arrested on Tuesday -- two men and a woman -- have since been released.

German Football Association (DFB) president Fritz Keller faced calls to resign on Sunday after he sparked outrage by comparing his deputy to a Nazi judge.

Presidents of the DFB's regional associations, which run Germany's semi-professional and amateur leagues, announced after weekend crisis talks that Keller had lost a vote of confidence and has been "asked to step down from his position".

DFB general secretary Friedrich Curtius was likewise asked to vacate his role after losing a confidence vote.

The turmoil comes after Keller in a recent meeting likened DFB vice-president Rainer Koch to Roland Freisler, the infamous head of the Nazi party's court in the 1940s.

Freisler was also a participant at 1942's Wannsee Conference, where it was decided that 11 million Jews should be sent to death camps.

The remark triggered a storm of criticism and Keller has since apologised to Koch, acknowledging that his words were "totally inappropriate, notably towards the victims of Nazism".

However, Keller ruled out stepping down over the incident.

Koch has not said that he has accepted the apology.

In a statement, the leaders of the DFB's five regional and 21 state associations called Keller's Nazi reference "completely unacceptable" and said they condemned it "in the strongest possible terms".

"The president's comments are incompatible with the principles and values of the associations," they added.

Also read | Germany again protest for human rights with cryptic message The turmoil comes after Keller in a recent meeting likened DFB vice-president Rainer Koch to Roland Freisler, the infamous head of the Nazi party's court in the 1940s. In a statement, the leaders of the DFB's five regional and 21 state associations called Keller's Nazi reference "completely unacceptable" and said they condemned it "in the strongest possible terms". "The president's comments are incompatible with the principles and values of the associations," they added. German FA president faces calls to resign after Nazi remark

French Culture Minister Roselyne Bachelot has announced that the country will return a masterpiece by Gustav Klimt to the heirs of its owner, more than 80 years after she was forced to sell it in the Nazi era.

'Rosiers sous les Arbres' or 'Rose Bushes Under Trees', painted by the Austrian artist around 1904-05, will be returned to the family of Holocaust victim Nora Stiasny, who had to sell the painting at a knockdown price to survive financially after the Nazis annexed Austria in 1938.

The art dealer, a Nazi sympathiser, held on to it until his death and France, unaware of its history, eventually bought it at auction for its Musee d'Orsay museum in 1980, the minister added.

"The restoration of looted items is an ardent obligation. It is the honour of the Republic to do so, the honour of France," she said.

The painting was bought in 1911 by Stiasny's uncle, a Jewish Austrian collector named Viktor Zuckerkandl.

She was forced to sell it very cheap shortly after the Nazis came to power in Austria in 1938 at a time when Jewish families were being frozen out of the economy.

It was bought by Stiasny's former lover, Philipp Haeusler, who had joined the Nazi party and managed to hide his past after the war.

Stiasny died in 1942 along with her husband and son. It is not clear whether they were in the Polish ghetto of Izbica or the Belzec concentration camp.

France acquired 'Rose Bushes Under Trees' from a Swiss gallery in 1980 for its soon-to-open Musee d'Orsay in Paris, knowing nothing of its violent history.

"The decision we've taken is obviously difficult. It means removing a master-work from the national collection that is the only painting by Gustav Klimt that France owns," said Bachelot.

"But I'm not heartbroken over it, quite the contrary."

She added that it had been a challenging process due to the destruction of evidence and the erosion of family memories.

The work will go to the descendants of Stiasny's sister, Hermine Mueller-Hofmann, who managed to escape the Holocaust.

France to return Klimt painting looted by Nazis to Holocaust victim

A French Holocaust survivor battling with an American university over a painting by Camille Pissarro that was stolen by the Nazis went to court in Paris on Tuesday to try block the university from suing her for millions of dollars.

Leone-Noelle Meyer, 81, has for years been trying to recover Pissarro's impressionist "La Bergère rentrant des moutons", or Shepherdess Bringing in Sheep, which was seized from her adoptive parents during World War II.

The oil-on-canvas work dating to 1886 was acquired in the 1930s by Raoul Meyer, who ran the Paris department store Galeries Lafayette.

The painting was confiscated by Nazi forces in February 1941 and wound up in Switzerland at the end of the war before being bought by Aaron and Clara Weitzenhoffer, who bequeathed it to the University of Oklahoma in 2000.

On learning of its existence, Meyer -- who was orphaned during the war -- launched proceedings to recover the painting, which culminated in a 2016 deal recognising her as the painting's rightful owner.

But she is now seeking to have the deal overturned, angering the university which is threatening to sue her for millions of dollars.

Under the terms of the accord, the artwork was to be displayed in France for five years and then rotated between museums in Paris and Oklahoma every three years.

But Meyer wants to leave the painting to the Musee d'Orsay -- famous for its huge collection of Impressionist art -- and the museum has declined the gift, saying it fears that shipping it across the Atlantic every three years will be very costly and could damage the work.

The painting, which currently hangs in the Musee d'Orsay, is scheduled to return to the US in July.

'Contracts are sacred'

On Tuesday, Meyer went to court in Paris to demand that the university halt all legal action against her, echoing a move by the university against her in the US.

"Contracts are sacred," Olivier de Baecque, counsel for the university, argued in court.

"A transaction is sacred but what is more sacred still is returning an asset looted by the Gestapo," Meyer's lawyer Ron Soffer countered.

The court reserved judgement until April 13.

Several artworks stolen by the Nazis from Jewish families have been at the centre of court cases in Europe in recent years.

This is the second involving a painting by Pissarro.

In October 2018, an American couple on Tuesday lost their bid to keep ownership of the painting "La Cueillette" ("Picking Peas") which was looted from a French Jewish collector during World War II.

The American couple had argued they had no idea it was looted when they bought it at auction.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has announced his support for banning a comparison between the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) with Hitler's Germany.

The announcement comes after the publication of two foreign books in Russia that were comparing the leadership of both the USSR and Nazi Germany.

Elena Yampolskaya, the head of the Russian Parliament's committee on culture and a member of the governing United Russia party had put forward the suggestion on Tuesday saying ''the Soviets were worse than the Nazis."

Without naming the two books she added ''Unfortunately, we translate and publish such impudent, unsubstantiated books in our country. The first book had 45,000 copies published, and the second 80,000. Both are popular with young people.''

In response, Putin said, ''I agree with your suggestions. We need to be careful, but of course, do it.''

We will be exposing any attempts to distort history and to let the spirit of alliance and of combat brotherhood be consigned to oblivion,” he added.

Earlier this year, the official Twitter account of the White House in Washington DC had stirred a debate in the wake of guaranteeing that the US and England won World War 2, totally precluding the commitment of the Soviet Union.

Elena Yampolskaya, the head of the Russian Parliament's committee on culture and a member of the governing United Russia party had put forward the suggestion on Tuesday saying ''the Soviets were worse than the Nazis." Without naming the two books she added ''Unfortunately, we translate and publish such impudent, unsubstantiated books in our country. The first book had 45,000 copies published, and the second 80,000. Both are popular with young people.'' In response, Putin said, ''I agree with your suggestions. We need to be careful, but of course, do it.'' We will be exposing any attempts to distort history and to let the spirit of alliance and of combat brotherhood be consigned to oblivion,” he added. Earlier this year, the official Twitter account of the White House in Washington DC had stirred a debate in the wake of guaranteeing that the US and England won World War 2, totally precluding the commitment of the Soviet Union.

Prize-winning author and Holocaust survivor Ruth Klueger has died aged 88 at her home in California, her Austrian publisher said Wednesday.

The Zsolnay publishing house confirmed to AFP that Klueger had passed away on the night between Monday and Tuesday after a long illness.

Klueger, who received many prestigious awards for her writing about her experience during the Holocaust, was also known for her outspoken stance on Nazi Germany's atrocities.

"We survivors are not responsible for forgiveness. I perceived resentment as an appropriate feeling for an injustice that can never be atoned for," Klueger once told Austrian media.

Born in Vienna in 1931, Klueger was 10 years old when the Nazi regime separated her from her father, a Jewish gynaecologist, and deported her and her mother, a nurse, to the Theresienstadt concentration camp.

They were later moved to Auschwitz-Birkenau, where Klueger, now 12, began composing poetry in her head.

Her father and half-brother were killed, but the two women ended up in Christianstadt concentration camp and managed to escape during a so-called death march.

In 1947, Klueger and her mother emigrated to the US, where she studied library sciences and German in New York and at the University of Berkley, California.

She turned to writing about her own life after almost dying in a traffic accident in Germany.

"Still Alive: A Holocaust Girlhood remembered" was among her most renowned and critically acclaimed works, described as "an unforgettable example of humanity" by Le Monde.

When her mother died in 2000, Klueger wrote that she "felt a sense of triumph, because this had been a human death, because she had survived and outlived the evil times and had died in her own good time, almost 100 years after she was born."

"Rarely does one meet people who have as much magnetism as Ruth Klueger," Herbert Ohrlinger, the head of Zsolnay, said in a statement.

"What she experienced in her life, how she dealt with those experiences and what she made of them, is extraordinary," he said, adding it had been a "privilege" to know and work with her.

Toward the end of her life, Klueger grew increasingly political, describing German Chancellor Angela Merkel as "heroic" for her pro-migration stance.

"This country, which was responsible for the worst crimes of the century, has won the applause of the world today," the then 84-year-old scholar told the German parliament in 2016.

Polish divers say they have found the wreck of a German World War Two ship which may help solve a decades-old mystery, the whereabouts of the Amber Room, an ornate chamber from a tsarist palace in Russia that was looted by the Nazis.

Decorated with amber and gold, the Amber Room was part of the Catherine Palace near St Petersburg, but was last seen in Koenigsberg, then a Baltic port city in Germany but now the Russian enclave of Kaliningrad.

It was from Koenigsberg that the Karlsruhe steamer set sail in 1945 with a heavy cargo, before being sunk by Soviet warplanes off the coast of Poland.

Divers from the Baltictech group say they have found the wreck of the Karlsruhe.

“We have been looking for the wreckage since last year when we realised there could be the most interesting, undiscovered story lying at the bottom of the Baltic Sea,” diver Tomasz Stachura said in a statement.

“It is practically intact. In its holds, we discovered military vehicles, porcelain and many crates with contents still unknown.”

The Karlsruhe had been taking part in Operation Hannibal, one of the largest sea evacuations in history which helped more than one million German troops and civilians from East Prussia escape the Soviet advance towards the end of World War Two.

Documentation from the time suggests the boat left Koenigsberg in a hurry, with a large cargo and 1,083 people on board.

“All this, put together, stimulates the human imagination. Finding the German steamer and the crates with contents as yet unknown resting on the bottom of the Baltic Sea may be significant for the whole story,” said diver Tomasz Zwara.

The Amber Room was constructed in Prussia and then given to Tsar Peter the Great of Russia in 1716 as a present.

The Germans dismantled it and took it to Koenigsberg during the war where it then disappeared during Allied bombing raids on the city. Many believe it was destroyed. Russian craftsmen have constructed a replica Amber Room in the Catherine Palace.

Twenty-nine police officers in Germany's North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW) region have been suspended for sharing pictures of Adolf Hitler and refugees in gas chambers.

NRW Interior Minister Herbert Reul was quoted by BBC as said it was a "disgrace for NRW police".

"This is the worst and most repulsive kind of hate-baiting... Right-wing extremists and neo-Nazis have absolutely no place in the North Rhine-Westphalia police, our police," he added.

The neo-Nazi imagery, including the Swastika was shared in far-right chatrooms.

There were 11 main suspects and a raid involving more than 200 police officers was carried out on 34 police stations and private homes.

Some of the police officials are facing charges of spreading Nazi propaganda while others are being accused of not reporting their colleagues who committed such an act.

Displaying Swastika is considered to be illegal in Germany. The Nazi salute and saying "Heil Hitler" is also banned in public.

In recent decades there has been a relative rise in number of people who sympathise with right wing and extremist elements present in German society decades after defeat of the ideology.

A 19th-century oil painting stolen from occupied France during World War II has gone on display in a bid to trace its rightful owners. This happened after it was returned by the son of the German soldier who took it on orders from above.

After 76 years in Germany, the small untitled artwork by French painter Nicolas Rousseau is back in France and exhibited at the World Centre for Peace, Liberty and Human Rights in the northeastern town of Verdun.

Next to it hangs a sign: "If you recognise the landscape or have any information about this painting, we would be grateful if you would let us know."

For the last fortnight, it has hung in the lobby of the centre, which receives around 60,000 visitors a year, in the hope it will nudge someone's memory and lead the painting back to its owners or their heirs.

In the artwork, a figure sits on a river bank under cloudy skies, surrounded by tall trees and with a village off in the distance.

Rousseau was a member of the Barbizon school of painters, who embraced naturalism in art.

Its reported true value goes far beyond its market value of 3,000 to 5,000 euros ($3,580 to $5,970).

In spring 1944, Alfred Forner, an NCO in the German Luftwaffe, was stationed somewhere between France's northern Normandy region and the town of Saint-Omer further up the coast. He was commissioned by a superior to bring the Rousseau painting to Berlin during his leave.

But when he got to the address in the German capital where he had been told to take the canvas, he found the building in ruins.

Forner died in combat some months later, during the summer.

The artwork, which measures 38 x 55 centimetres (15 x 22 inches), hung on the family's living room wall in Berlin for 75 years.

But in January last year, his son Peter Forner contacted the French embassy in Berlin, expressing the wish that the painting be returned and its owners found.

By exhibiting the painting -- a move he said was unprecedented -- they hope to identify the owners but also to carry out the last wishes of Peter Forner, who died in May aged 80.

An official ceremony of restitution is due to be held in October at the World Centre for Peace, housed in an archbishop's palace.

The painting will then join an exhibition on the end of WWII, planned for the close of the year.

German prosecutors said on Monday they were investigating a retired police officer suspected of sending threatening emails, signed with the name of a gang of neo-Nazi killers, to prominent figures of immigrant background.

Concern is growing in Germany that potentially violent anti-immigrant nationalists may be gaining footholds in the uniformed services - a matter of huge sensitivity in a country still acutely aware of the World War Two genocide of millions of Jews and others by Hitler`s Nazis.

The man and his wife were detained on Friday but then released while police searched seized computer storage devices.

The emails, including some sent to legislators of Turkish background, were signed "NSU 2.0", a reference to the "National Socialist Underground" neo-Nazi gang, which murdered 10 people, mainly immigrants, between 2000 and 2007.

"The suspects, a former Bavarian police officer, 63, and his wife, 55, had previously come to the attention of police in connection with racially motivated crimes," prosecutors in the city of Frankfurt said. "They are suspected of having sent emails with offensive, inflammatory and threatening contents to legislators and others."

Last week, the interior minister of the state of Hesse said he was aware of 69 such emails. One of the recipients was Aiman Mazyek, chair of the Central Council of Muslims, who published the text on Twitter: "Heil Hitler. Yours, NSU 2.0".

There have been reports that some emails contained restricted information about public figures, implying that the perpetrators may have had access to police databases.

Last month, the government announced it was disbanding a company of an elite commando unit in a effort to purge it of persistent far-right extremism.

A 93 year old German man has been convicted of Nazi crimes on Thursday. He has been handed a suspended two-year sentence for helping with murders of 5,232 prisoners, mainly Jewish, at a Nazi concentration camp in World War II.

Bruno D. was an SS guard (Schutzstaffel) at the Stutthof concentration camp near Poland (then known as Gdansk).

He has been charged of assisting in murders between August 1944 and April 1945. While Bruno has confirmed that he was present at the camp during that time, he has argued that he did not participate in the killings and his presence, simply, did not count as guilt.

Being 17 or 18 years old at the time of the murders, Bruno was sentenced under juvenile guidelines, while the prosecutors called for atleast a three-year prison sentence.

As the former guard's health is not at its best, the court sessions limited it to only two to three hours per day.

In the session, he apologised for the general suffering that the camp 'prisoners' went through. “I would like to apologise to all the people who have gone through this hell of insanity and to their relatives and survivors,” he told the court. However, he did not admit to being a part of the killings — which was nearly 65,000 people.

Prosecutors have argued that many of these 65,000 people were shot in the back of the head or gassed with the lethal Zyklon B gas.

The Hamburg court is trying to bring justice to the people who lost their lives and/or their loved ones in the holocaust, even though many of the suspected individuals are now in old age. The court hearings started after a landmark conviction in 2011 opened the way to more prosecutions as it was the first time that working in a camp was sufficient grounds for culpability, with no proof of a specific crime.

'Lijepa li si' is a patriotic song that mentions Herceg-Bosnia, which Zagreb-backed Bosnian Croats self-proclaimed as a statelet during Bosnia's 1990s war and which they had hoped would eventually merge with Croatia. The world-class goalkeeper has not yet commented on the video but as per his personal manager, the player does not speak Croatian. Neuer is on a vacation with his friend and Bayern Munich goalkeeping coach Toni Tapalovic on the Dalmatian coast on the Adriatic Sea. A press officer from Bayern Munich declined to comment when contacted by AFP. Neuer's managers were not immediately available for comment. According to Magazine Focus, Neuer was "naive to think" the clip would not emerge in the media. At the same time, "assuming that with this song Neuer supports Croatian nationalist ideas would be a little too far-reaching", it said. (Inputs from AFP)

Germany's Angela Merkel crossed the gates of the former Auschwitz Nazi death camp in Poland on Friday for the first time in her 14 years as chancellor, promising to battle a new wave of anti-Semitism.

Merkel is only the third chancellor ever to visit the Nazi German camp where a million Jews were killed between 1940 and 1945 and which has come to symbolise the Holocaust as a whole.

Her trip, which comes ahead of the 75th anniversary of the camp's liberation by Soviet troops on January 27, is being seen as an important political message.

On the eve of her visit, 65-year-old Merkel said that "the fight against anti-Semitism and against all forms of hate" was a priority for her government.

She also hailed a new 60-million-euro ($66-million) donation for the Auschwitz-Birkenau Foundation that was approved by Germany's federal states on Thursday.

Merkel began her visit by walking under the Nazi slogan "Arbeit macht frei" (Work will set you free) that still hangs over the gates of the camp.

She will also hold a minute's silence by the Death Wall where thousands of prisoners were shot dead and visit the site of a gas chamber and a crematorium.

The visit "is a particularly important signal of attention and solidarity at a time when Auschwitz survivors are victims of anti-Semitic insults and hate-filled emails," said Christoph Heubner, deputy chairman of the Auschwitz International Committee.

Merkel was accompanied during the visit by a survivor of the camp, 87-year-old Bogdan Stanislaw Bartnikowski, as well as Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki.

Josef Schuster, head of the Central Council of Jews in Germany, and Ronald Lauder, head of the World Jewish Congress, also took part in the visit.

In total, 1.1 million people were killed at Auschwitz-Birkenau, including non-Jewish Poles, Soviet prisoners of war, Roma and anti-Nazi fighters.

Many were killed the same day they arrived at the camp.

"There is no other place of memory that demonstrates with such precision what happened during the Shoah," Schuster told AFP ahead of the visit.

Merkel follows in the footsteps of previous German chancellors Helmut Schmidt, who came in 1977, and Helmut Kohl, who visited in 1989 and 1995.

She has already visited several of the former camps in Germany over many years and has been to Jerusalem's Yad Vashem Holocaust memorial centre five times.

In 2008, she became the first German leader to address the Israeli parliament. In that speech, she spoke of the "shame" that Germans still feel.

Merkel has called the Holocaust a "break with civilisation" and has voiced concern about the rise of anti-Semitism in Germany.

Her visit comes two months after an attack aimed at a synagogue in the eastern city of Halle in which two people were killed, part of a growing trend.

Police figures show that anti-Semitic offences rose by almost 10 percent in Germany last year from the previous year to 1,646- the highest level in a decade.

Germany's far-right AfD party, some of whose members have been accused of using anti-Semitic rhetoric, has called for a rethink of the way Germany remembers its Nazi past.

Senior AfD lawmaker Bjoern Hoecke has called for a "180-degree shift" in the culture of atonement.

The timing of the visit is also significant because of questions over Merkel's political future as tensions persist within the governing coalition.

German media reported that she wanted to make the trip ahead of any potential political crisis.

Merkel intends to step down at the end of her mandate in 2021 but there is a chance that the date could be brought forward if her junior coalition partners, the Social Democrats, pull out of the government.

The eastern German city of Dresden has declared a "Nazi emergency" as officials warned of a rise in far-right support and violence.

The city is the birthplace of the Islamophobic Pegida movement, which holds weekly rallies here, while the anti-immigration Alternative fuer Deutschland (AfD) party won 28 per cent in September regional elections.

Dresden's city council on Wednesday backed a resolution against far-right extremism with the title "Nazinotstand?", or "Nazi emergency?".

It was brought by Max Aschenbach, a local councillor for left-leaning satirical party Die Partei, who told the DPA news agency that "this city has a Nazi problem".

The resolution said the city was "worried that anti-democratic, anti-pluralist, discriminatory and far-right positions which include violence" were on the rise in Dresden.

It called for a "strengthening of democratic culture", making a priority of "the protection of minorities, human rights and victims of extreme-right violence".

The motion also stressed the importance to fight "anti-Semitism, racism and Islamophobia".

The resolution was approved by 39 council member votes against 29.

It was backed by the left and liberal parties but rejected not only by the AfD members but also by centre-right Christian Democrats who said it should not have targeted right-wing extremism only.

"The title is clearly pointed," said Thomas Loeser, a council member for the Green party.

"But we, as the city community, clearly declare our support for those who oppose racism and anti-Semitism, and expect everybody else to do the same," he said.

As the West and Soviet Union scrambled to claim the Third Reich's best minds following the war, the US was able to exfiltrate Wernher von Braun, the rocket engineer who designed the Nazi's dreaded V-2 missile, and about a hundred of his top scientists and engineers. They eventually moved to the tiny farming town of Huntsville, where the army transformed a weapons arsenal into a centre for missile development, where they greatly contributed to the Apollo program that put a man on the Moon. Their children still live there and carry their heritage as the US celebrates the 50th anniversary of Apollo 11

German prosecutors have charged a 92-year-old former concentration camp guard with being an accessory to murder, in what will be one of the last ever cases against Nazi-era war crimes.

Hamburg prosecutors accused the man, identified only as Bruno D, of aiding and abetting 5,230 cases of murder during the almost nine months he spent on duty at a concentration camp watch-tower at the end of World War Two.

According to Die Welt newspaper, which first reported the charges, the man admitted to prosecutors during a voluntary interrogation last year that he had seen people being taken to gas chambers to be murdered.

"What good would it have done for me to leave? They'd just have found somebody else," he told prosecutors, according to the newspaper.

"I felt bad for the people there. I didn't know why they were there. I knew that they were Jews who had committed no crime."

D., who was 17 when he began serving at Stutthof concentration camp near Gdansk in present-day Poland, said he had only joined the SS, the paramilitary wing of Adolf Hitler's Nazi party, because a heart weakness meant he was only suited for "garrison service".

He said he had not been a Nazi sympathiser.

With only a handful of people involved in Nazi Germany's genocidal crimes still alive, all in extreme old age, prosecutors are racing against time to ensure at least some justice is done by the victims, including the five million Jews murdered in the Holocaust.

The case against another nonagenarian former guard at Stutthof, where more than 60,000 people died, was halted last year because the suspect was too infirm to stand trial.

Another, Oskar Groening, known as the "Bookkeeper of Auschwitz" for his job counting cash stolen from people sent to the most notorious of all the regime's death camps, died last year aged 96 as he waited to begin his sentence.
