In 2023, the sea ice minimum reached levels 20 per cent lower than the average levels recorded in the last 40 years. This, as per Tim Naish, director of the Antarctic Research Centre at New Zealand's Victoria University of Wellington, equals to sea loss nearly 10 times the area of New Zealand. Naish was not a part of this study.

"In some cases we are getting close to tipping points, which once crossed will lead to irreversible changes with unstoppable consequences for future generations," he added.

As per Caroline Holmes, one of the study's co-authors, "It's going to take decades if not centuries for these things to recover. There's no quick fix to replacing this ice."

"It will certainly take a long time, even if it's possible," said Holmes, a polar climate scientist at British Antarctic Survey.

The study says that the burning of fossil fuels is a driving force behind Global warming. This has made Antarctica vulnerable to extreme events, and the impact is "virtually certain" to get worse, it claims.

While it is certain that climate change will "lead to increases in the size and frequency" of heatwaves, ice shelf collapses and declines in sea ice in Antarctica, the precise impact has been hard to measure.

Scientists, as per Reuters, have struggled to measure the exact extent to which global warming is affecting the thickness of Antarctic ice. However, as per Martin Siegert, a glaciologist at the University of Exeter and a co-author of the study, it's "scientifically reasonable" to assume that extreme events are going to get more frequent.

Slovenian Prime Minister Robert Golob has <a href="https://www.wionews.com/videos/slovenia-pm-worst-disaster-in-our-history-622951">described</a> the torrential rains and severe flooding, that the country of two million is witnessing, as its worst natural disaster since independence three decades ago.

In an update, on Monday, reports said that the rescue workers were in the midst of trying to reopen roads to the isolated places and were also assessing the damage. The Slovenian Environment Agency said floods were starting to recede on Monday, but some areas were still cut off.

Meanwhile, civil protection authorities were keeping an eye on flood-hit areas where landslides pose a threat to infrastructure and houses. This comes as residents from villages along the river Mura had to be evacuated on Sunday night after a part of the levee collapsed.

The body of a man was also recovered in the neighbouring country Austria from a river in Carinthia state, parts of which have also been affected due to heavy rains and floods.&nbsp;

According to reports, the damage to buildings and bridges caused by the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/photos/in-pics-not-a-typical-flood-event-heavy-rains-landslides-hit-in-parts-of-slovenia-austria-622517">floods</a> is worth around $549 million. “The material damage is not so important. The important thing is we saved our lives on time,” said Drago Hudofisk, in the village of Prevalje, as quoted by Reuters.&nbsp;

As per the media report, Hudofisk is part of an eight-member family home that was swept away by a river over the weekend. “You know, nature fights back against everything (we do). Water has the power, it destroys everything,” he added.&nbsp;

<h2>EU countries help disaster-hit Slovenia</h2>

Slovenia, a European Union member, has asked for help from the 27-nation bloc and sought heavy machinery, such as excavators and engineering units. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said she will visit Slovenia on Wednesday, “to witness on the ground the destruction caused by the floods and discuss EU support.”&nbsp;

Slovenia also requested helicopters, soldiers and prefabricated bridges from NATO. Meanwhile, the first truck carrying humanitarian help and food arrived from Hungary late Sunday, followed by a helicopter.&nbsp;

Croatia also provided a military helicopter to help close and secure a broken levee on the Mura River. Germany said it is sending emergency workers and expressed “dismay” over the “terrible flood catastrophe in Slovenia and Austria.”

Climate activist Greta Thunberg&nbsp;has pulled out of an appearance at the upcoming Edinburgh International Book Festival, citing alleged links of sponsoring firm&nbsp;to the fossil fuel industry.

The annual festival was due to take place on August 13th (Sunday) and Thunberg was due to speak at an event called 'It's Not Too Late To Change The World' at the Edinburgh Playhouse.

However, she said that she would not attend the festival because it recieves sponsorship from the Baillie Gifford investment firm, which she claimed "invests heavily in the fossil fuel industry".

<h2>Greenwashing</h2>

Accusing the fossil fuel industry of "greenwashing" by sponsoring cultural events, Thunberg said she does not want to be associated with it.

"Greenwashing efforts by the fossil fuel industry, including sponsorship of cultural events, allows them to keep the social licence to continue operating."

<h2>Baillie Gifford's rebuttal</h2>

Baillie Gifford, which is an investment management firm, as per BBC, has been a sponsor of&nbsp;the Edinburgh book festival for over 19 years.

The company, however, said that it was not a significant fossil fuel investor. It also claims that compared to the market average of 11 per cent,&nbsp;only about two per cent of its clients' money is invested into fossil fuels.

"Of those companies, some have already moved most of their business away from fossil fuels, and many are helping to drive the transition to clean energy," added a company spokesperson.

"The Book Festival exists to give a platform for debate and discussion around key issues affecting humanity today - including the climate emergency.

"We would not be in a position to provide that platform without the long-term support of organisations such as Baillie Gifford," said Barley as quoted by BBC.

"We strongly believe that Baillie Gifford are part of the solution to the climate emergency. They are early investors in progressive climate positive companies, providing funds to help them grow".

Apologising to people who had purchased the tickets hoping to see the young climate activist, he said they will be refunded in full.&nbsp;

Climate Change is steadily contributing to heating up the Earth, and in the latest, scientists have sounded the alarm over ocean temperatures, which as per European Union's climate change service Copernicus have hit their hottest ever recorded temperature.&nbsp;

Beating a 2016 record, the daily global sea surface temperatures have reached 20.96C, which is far above the average for this time of the year, reports BBC. In 2016, a record was set when the naturally occurring El Niño was in full swing.

<h2>Warmer oceans land us in 'hot water'</h2>

Oceans play an important role in the grand scheme of things. They are a vital climate regulator, soaking up heat, producing half the Earth's oxygen and driving weather patterns.

Warmer temperatures can negatively affect these abilities. Water loses some of its ability to absorb carbon dioxide upon heating up, this means that the gas which contributes to warming the planet stays in the atmosphere. This can also accelerate the melting of glaciers, which in turn flow into oceans, finally contributing to rising sea levels.&nbsp;

Further, hotter ocean water also affects marine life. Fishes and whales are known to move in search of cooler water, which disturbs the food chain. Other species, like sharks, are known to get more aggressive.

<h2>A hot bath or the ocean?</h2>

Talking to BBC, Dr Kathryn Lesneski, who is monitoring a marine heatwave in the Gulf of Mexico for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, compared the water temperatures to a bath.

She said that due to the rising water temperatures, "There is widespread coral bleaching at shallow reefs in Florida and many corals have already died."

Experts, as per BBC, warn that this can also affect fish stocks.

Scientists have expressed their worry about the timing of this latest broken record.

"The fact that we've seen the record now makes me nervous about how much warmer the ocean may get between now and next March," says Dr Samantha Burgess, from the Copernicus Climate Change Service.

As per Burgess, oceans should be at their warmest in March and not August.

At around 2300 GMT, the typhoon was about 70 kilometres south of Okinawa's remote Kumejima island. It was moving west-northwest, reported the Japan Meteorological Agency, adding that it was expected to cross to eastern China later in the week.

This pattern was not typically observed during randomly selected two-hour windows when no&nbsp;earthquakes happened. These findings suggest that the motion observed in the final two hours may serve as precursors to earthquakes.

Current instruments are not sensitive enough to detect this motion in advance. Bletery estimates that existing equipment would need to be approximately 50 times more sensitive to detect precursors to earthquakes.

"That's a huge technological gap," said Bletery,&nbsp;adding, "we just don't have the technology yet to do it."

While this technological gap presents a significant obstacle, Bletery believes that the discovery itself is a sign of progress. It challenges the notion that earthquakes are chaotic, instantaneous events caused by sudden fault movements, he remarked.&nbsp;

Instead, he said that the observed two-hour preview suggests that earthquakes may have precursor elements that could potentially be identified before they occur.

The researchers' findings also raised intriguing questions. Talking to AFP, he said: "We knew the effect of heat on mortality after 2003, but with this analysis, we see that there is still a lot of work that needs to be done to protect the population."

The study highlighted that France — a jump of 2.43 degrees Celsius — experienced the largest increase in heat compared to its previous summer average, followed closely by Switzerland (2.30C), Italy (2.28C), and Hungary (2.13C).

The research predicted future scenarios if no action is taken to protect people from rising temperatures. As per the study, by 2030, Europe could witness over 68,000 heat-related deaths every summer.

By 2040, this number could rise to over 94,000, and by 2050, it could surpass 120,000.

"These predictions are based on the current level of vulnerability and future temperatures," said Achebak adding that "if we take very effective measures, that vulnerability can be reduced."

Heat-related deaths in Europe soared to over 61,000 during record-breaking summer, study shows

Severe flooding and landslides triggered by monsoon rains in eastern Nepal have resulted in deaths of two people, with 28 others reported missing, according to officials.&nbsp;

One of the fatalities occurred in Sankhuwasabha district, where a worker at a hydropower project was found dead, while 17 other workers remain unaccounted for, reports the news agency AFP.&nbsp;

In the neighbouring Taplejung district, a man lost his life. Police have identified him as&nbsp;30-year-old Ganesh Tamang.&nbsp;Three members of his family are currently missing after houses were swept away by a landslide.&nbsp;Santosh Rai, a resident of Panchkhapan Municipality-9 in Sankhuwasabha, was swept away by floods in the Hewakhola stream.

In the neighbouring district of Panchthar, the landslides and floods resulted in the loss of two lives. Among the victims was a nine-year-old girl from Phalelung Rural Municipality-3. As per The Kathmandu Post, her house&nbsp;was struck by a landslide on Saturday night. After a search operation by locals that lasted for seven hours, she was eventually rescued from the debris. Despite efforts to save her, she succumbed to her injuries while receiving treatment at Panchthar District Hospital on Sunday afternoon.

But for that to happen quickly, wealthy nations and multinational corporations need to share green technologies with vulnerable societies honestly.&nbsp;

Agriculture provides livelihoods for 2.5 billion people and is the largest source of income and jobs for poor, rural households. In developing countries, agriculture accounts for 29 per cent&nbsp;of GDP and 65 per cent of jobs. In developing nations, agrarian communities battle the ravages of erratic rainfall patterns that disrupt agricultural cycles, thrusting them into the jaws of abject food insecurity.

There is an urgent need for free access to climate-smart technologies, such as drought-resistant seeds and efficient irrigation systems, to empower vulnerable farmers to adapt to the ceaseless mutations of their ecological tapestries.

The need of the hour is collaborative synergies between governments, non-governmental organisations, and communities that will engender adaptation initiatives that remain firmly rooted in local realities, thus maximising efficacy.

Moreover, the preservation and restoration of fragile ecosystems emerge as milestones in mitigating climate change. Another tried and tested method is: rewilding. Taking a step back and allowing nature to heal itself naturally is the most logical step. Rewilding mitigates climate change by restoring ecosystems, reviving wildlife, and enhancing biodiversity. These rejuvenated ecosystems act as carbon sinks, effectively sequestering CO2, regulating the global carbon cycle, and reducing emissions.

The United Nations agency published new figures on Monday (May 22) which indicated that extreme weather events caused nearly 600 disasters in India which claimed 138,377 lives&nbsp;in the past five decades. The World Meteorological Department (WMO) report also noted that such events have caused the death of two million people and $4.3 trillion in economic damage in the same time period.&nbsp;

According to the report by the UN agency, more than 90 per cent of&nbsp;reported deaths across the world occurred in developing countries. The WMO said that between 1970 and 2021, Asia accounted for nearly 50 per cent of all reported deaths worldwide.&nbsp;

India witnessed &nbsp;573 disasters in the span of five decades which claimed the lives of 138,377 people between 1970 and 2021. According to the WMO, tropical cyclones are the leading cause of reported deaths in the continent. It said that&nbsp;tropical cyclone Nargis, which occurred in 2008, led to 138,366 deaths.&nbsp;

Furthermore, Bangladesh reported the highest number of casualties in Asia across 281 disasters. “The most vulnerable communities, unfortunately, bear the brunt of weather, climate and water-related hazards,” said WMO Secretary-General Petteri Taalas.

Taalas cited&nbsp;the most recent example of the extremely severe cyclonic storm Mocha which wreaked havoc in Myanmar and Bangladesh last week, which exemplified this reality. He added the severe storm has “caused widespread devastation…impacting the poorest of the poor”.&nbsp;

<h2>Indian researchers echo warnings&nbsp;</h2>

Last year, a report released by researchers at the Indian Institute of Technology, Gandhinagar, said that the frequency of extreme weather events such as floods and heatwaves is projected to significantly rise in the country due to climate change.

Meteorologists had&nbsp;previously warned about climate change increasing the instability in the atmosphere due to a rise in convective activity like thunderstorms, lightning and heavy rain events, as per the news agency PTI. Additionally, global warming has also led to cyclonic storms in the Bay of Bengal and the Arabian Sea to be longer and more intense than before.&nbsp;

<h2>Early warning systems for all</h2>

The findings in question were released at the quadrennial World Meteorological Congress in Geneva, Switzerland during high-level talks for ramping up action to ensure that early warning services reach everyone on earth.&nbsp;

The ‘United Nations Early Warnings for All initiative’ aims to make early warning services available for everyone by the end of 2027. WMO said Monday that 22,608 disaster deaths were recorded globally in 2020 and 2021 combined.&nbsp;

“Thanks to early warnings and disaster management these catastrophic mortality rates are now thankfully history,” the report noted, adding that “early warnings save lives”.&nbsp;

Myanmar's military junta on Friday said the death toll from Cyclone Mocha has reached 145. Most of the dead, as per the news agency AFP, belong to the persecuted Rohingya minority. In a statement, the junta said that out of the 145 dead, 24 were locals, four were soldiers and the rest 117 were "Bengalis" — a pejorative term for the Rohingya.

<h2>United Nations on Cyclone Mocha's damage to Myanmar</h2>

On Friday, the United Nations in a statement said that at least 800,000 people in Myanmar have been affected by Cyclone Mocha.

It said that the affected people need emergency food aid and other assistance.

According to Anthea Webb, the UN World Food Programme's deputy regional director for Asia and the Pacific, the cyclone caused extensive damage in Myanmar's Rakhine State, with massive destruction to homes, roads, hospitals, schools, and telecommunications and power lines.

"There are at least 800,000 people in urgent need of emergency food assistance," said Webb,&nbsp;adding that "greater needs for food, shelter, water, health and other humanitarian aid are expected to be revealed as we reach more areas."

<h2>International aid</h2>

AFP reports that a few international aid groups, including the United Nations World Food Programme, have been working on the ground in Sittwe.

However, a junta spokesperson remained silent about whether UN agencies would be granted access to displacement camps outside Sittwe that house Rohingya.

This comes after over 20 rivers have burst their banks and the amount of rain, which typically falls in six months, fell in a day and a half.&nbsp;

The death toll rose as rescue workers continued to search for anyone still trapped by floodwaters in the Italian region after downpours devastated homes and farms. The victims included two farmers in their 70s who might have been electrocuted while trying to move a fridge inside a flooded house, reported AFP, citing Italian media reports.&nbsp; 
 
The damage caused

Media reports citing officials have said that some 300 landslides have taken place and over 10,000 have been displaced. As of early Thursday, some 400 roads were also damaged or destroyed while the floods have affected 42 municipalities.

Speaking to reporters, Emilia-Romagna President Stefano Bonaccini, said, “We are facing a new earthquake,” referring to the seismic events that struck the region in 2012, destroying thousands of homes, and how since then almost everything was rebuilt. He added that we have seen that it can be done and “we will rebuild everything again, I am sure of that.”

Locals were seen waddling through dirty waters while officials have managed to partly restore electricity even as 27,000 people remain in the dark. The Coldiretti agricultural association said that more than 5,000 farms drowned including the so-called “Fruit Valley” as well as corn and grain fields.&nbsp; 
 
Evacuations and rescues

Authorities in Ravenna issued an immediate evacuation order early Thursday morning for three more villages threatened by floods.

The mayor of Ravenna, Michele De Pascale, announced on Thursday that residents of about a half dozen towns could return and warned them “to exercise the utmost caution,” adding that cracks in the river embankments still posed a risk to other areas.&nbsp;

Among those killed was a couple in Ronta di Cesena believed to have been hit by a wall of water as they went to check on their aromatic herb farm, reported AFP.&nbsp;

Furthermore, evacuations were ordered in towns to the west of Ravenna overnight while residents in Villanova were ordered to seek shelter on upper floors. The Italian coastguard also rescued two elderly people who took refuge on the roof of their flooded house in Faenza.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, seawater raced into more than 10 low-lying wards along the coast after the cyclone made landfall in Rakhine state Sunday afternoon, reported AP. As per local media reports, more than 850 houses, 64 schools, 14 health facilities and seven communication towers in&nbsp;Myanmar were destroyed or damaged by the category-five storm as it pummelled the country’s coast.&nbsp;

The State Administration Council has issued disaster declarations for at least 17 townships in Rakhine state. The country’s military leaders have declared Rakhine state a national disaster area while heavy rains, storms, and strong winds were recorded particularly in and around the state capital Sittwe. Locals told the BBC that at least 90 per cent of the city was witnessing the destruction caused by the storm.&nbsp;

The report added that communication lines are also down after the winds knocked down poles and trees. According to Myanmar’s military information office, the storm has damaged houses and electrical transformers in Sittwe, Kyaukpyu, and Gwa townships.&nbsp;

The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said due to the “ongoing wild weather” and telecommunications hindrances, it has not yet been able to assess the disaster’s full magnitude. It added, “Early reports suggest the damage is extensive and needs among already vulnerable communities, particularly displaced people, will be high.”

As per Reuters, a spokesman for the Arakan Army militia force in Rakhine State said it was using its communication equipment to gather information on the impact of the storm because civilian networks had been severely disrupted.

Around 400,000 people were evacuated in Myanmar and Bangladesh, as authorities and aid agencies scrambled to avoid heavy casualties. In 2008, Myanmar was hit by Cyclone Nargis which killed nearly 140,000 people while tens of thousands of homes and other buildings were washed away.&nbsp;

Nepal: Three killed, nine injured in avalanche while collecting 'Himalayan viagra'

At least 176 people have died after flash floods in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo’s South Kivu province, said local authorities, on Friday (May 5). This also comes days after flooding and landslides triggered by heavy rains killed more than 100 people in neighbouring Rwanda.

Flash floods triggered by heavy rains have devastated the Congo’s South Kivu province and even caused a river to overflow on Thursday which has since led to significant damage and loss of life in the villages of Bushushu and Nyamukubi, said the provincial government, in a statement.&nbsp;

South Kivu Governor Théo Ngwabidje Kasi put the death toll at 176 and said that other people were still missing, while a local civil society member, Kasole Martin, said 227 bodies had been found. “People are sleeping out in the open, schools and hospitals have been swept away,” said Martin, as quoted by Reuters.&nbsp;

Reportedly, as the weather had somewhat cleared on Friday, flattened houses and corrugated iron roofs jutting out from beneath thick layers of mud were seen, while haggard-looking survivors stood outside a wooden shed in which Red Cross workers placed bodies on top of each other.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, Archimede Karhebwa, the assistant administrator of South Kivu’s Kalehe territory, which was also hit by the floods, told AFP that about 100 people had died, adding that several villages in Kalehe, which lies west of Lake Kivu, were submerged when rivers burst their banks after heavy rains.&nbsp;

Speaking to AFP, the official also said how the floods “surprised vendors and their clients in the markets” as they swept away hundreds of houses. The heavy rains, as per officials, began late Thursday afternoon before the “river carried away villagers”.&nbsp;

An elected official from Kalehe territory, Vital Muhini, speaking on local radio said that the floods have caused “devastating human and material damage.” According to Karhebwa, deforestation in the area has contributed to the flooding problem as the rivers have burst their banks and caused disastrous flooding on four previous occasions.&nbsp;

He added, “We are sending out an SOS to people of good will and for urgent humanitarian aid,” as quoted by AFP. However, floods and landslides are not uncommon occurrences in South Kivu.

The recent floods come nearly a decade after heavy rain destroyed more than 700 homes and more than 130 people were reported missing at the time, reported Reuters, citing United Nations. Additionally, just a month after at least 21 people died and several were reported missing in a landslide in North Kivu province.

Flooding and landslides triggered by heavy rains, as of Thursday, have killed more than 130 people and destroyed more than 5,000 homes, said a government spokesperson.&nbsp;

“So far, we have recorded 130 deaths. Additionally, there are 77 injuries, with 36 of those individuals currently in the hospital. We also have five people missing,” said deputy government spokesperson, Alain Mukuralinda, as quoted by Reuters.&nbsp;

He added that floods had also completely destroyed over 5,100 houses and affected an additional 2,500, and the people who were living in those homes needed to now be relocated. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Édouard Ngirente, during his visit to the affected areas in western Rwanda said that the death toll could rise as some bodies were still buried in the mud.&nbsp;

In this context, among the worst-hit areas was the territory of the Little Red River Cree Nation, which comprises three communities in the north of the province, including Fox Lake, where fire has engulfed as many as 20 houses.&nbsp;

According to Christie Tucker, an information unit manager for Alberta Wildfire, there have been nearly 350 wildfires in Alberta this year, which have burned more than 25,000 hectares. “This is significantly more wildfire activity for this time of year than we have seen any time in the recent past,” said Tucker, at a press conference, as quoted by Reuters.&nbsp;

She added, “It's going to get hotter, it's going to get windier and we are expecting some extreme wildfire behaviour. Firefighters are at the ready today for what could be an extremely challenging day.” The official warned that fires were expected to intensify.

It added, “Severe flooding is possible, and extreme flooding...is plausible, in areas that receive high rainfall.”

The authorities are also concerned about the heavy rains expected at the weekend which could worsen the situation. “The situation is expected to worsen as rainfall and thundershowers are forecast for Friday, May 5, and Saturday, May 6, which increases the likelihood of flooding,” said the Ministry of Emergency Management said in a statement, as per Reuters.&nbsp;

It claims that the media coverage doesn't inspire the pro-environmental behaviours needed to address the problem.&nbsp;The study has been published in the Global Environmental Change scientific journal. For it, researchers analysed around 50,000 scientific publications on climate change for the year 2020 and examined which ones made it into the mainstream media.

They found that the media tends to pick research within the natural science field. There was also an evident focus on large-scale climate-based projections that won't happen for many years, reports AFP.

Researchers warned that this approach could cause a "possible distancing reaction on the part of the public."

"On the contrary, the media's selective choice of certain elements of climate change research could backfire, provoking denial and avoidance."

Co-author Marie-Elodie Perga, a professor at the UNIL Institute of Earth Surface Dynamics, suggested&nbsp;that media should strive to "show that climate change has direct consequences on our lifestyles, our immediate environment or our finances".

Another study co-author, Fabrizio Butera, a UNIL psychology professor warned&nbsp;that such coverage can be harmful and that "individuals exposed to these facts, not feeling directly concerned by them, will tend towards a peripheral, superficial and distracted treatment of the information."

"If the goal of mediating research is to have a societal impact, then it seems that we are pushing all the buttons that don't work," said Perga.

They suggested that in order to inspire action, the media should present environmental issues in a "solution-oriented way" and strive to demonstrate how climate change has direct consequences on our lifestyles, our immediate environment, or our finances.&nbsp;

The researchers argued that fear can lead to behavioural change, but only if the problem presented is accompanied by solutions. Research on human behaviour has shown that people are more likely to take action when they believe there is a way to mitigate the problem. Selective and purely descriptive articles that only highlight the negative aspects of climate change can be counterproductive and may result in people ignoring the problem altogether. Thus, they said it is essential to emphasise potential solutions and inspire a sense of empowerment to address the issue, rather than solely focusing on the negative impacts of climate change.

As of Tuesday afternoon, The Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) said winds in the Gangneung area were blowing as strong&nbsp;as 103 kilometres per hour.&nbsp;

The city which is home to over 200,000 people is around 170 kilometres away from the capital Seoul. The KMA has also issued a strong wind advisory in other regions across the country attributing the unusual weather conditions to the Korean Peninsula being located between high pressure to the south and low pressure to the north.&nbsp;

South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol has asked officials to mobilise all available resources “equipment and personnel” to control and extinguish the wildfire as soon as possible and quickly evacuate nearby residents to minimise casualties, said the presidential spokesperson Lee Do-woon.&nbsp;

Storms are named to make identifying them easier in warning messages. AFP reports that throughout the annual Atlantic hurricane season — officially runs from June 1 to November 30 — storms are assigned alternating male and female names in alphabetical order.

Last year's Hurricane Fiona was the costliest extreme weather event on record in Atlantic Canada. It claimed 29 lives and, as per AFP, caused over $3 billion in damages. The large, powerful and destructive category-four Atlantic hurricane, hit communities in the Antilles, Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic, before moving on to strike Canada as a strong post-tropical cyclone in mid-September.

"The last decade has been a lost decade in terms of preparing for and adapting to the risks, the risks we already have, and those that we know are coming," said adaptation committee chairwoman Julia King. The report predicts that even if the UK meets its "net zero" carbon emissions by 2050 goal, things could still take a turn for the worse.&nbsp;

No matter what measures are taken, rising temperatures are here to stay, the report said. This&nbsp;necessitates new initiatives to adapt energy and water supplies, buildings, transport networks and other necessary infrastructure.

In southern California, United States, the ongoing "winter weather drama" took a wilder turn as a tornado on Wednesday tore through the city, ripping roofs off of buildings and smashing cars around. The tornado, as per AFP, raked the city of Montebello near Los Angeles. Residents were left scrambling for safety as the storm destroyed cars, broke windows and created a "mess." Aerial pictures taken after the tornado showed several roofs with holes in them, pipes and other installations twisted and broken, and vehicles appear to have been dragged out of their parking spaces.

Speaking to broadcaster KTLA, one local business owner described his experience of suddenly coming face to face with the storm and said he was driving when he "saw this tornado in front of me and had to reverse out."

The National Weather Service (NWS) said it was investigating the "weak tornado," and another one that hit Carpinteria, near Santa Barbara. The two storms, as per the weather agency, had winds of up to 85 miles an hour.

As per NWS, the southern Californian storm "damaged around 25 mobile home units and there was minor tree damage to the cemetery adjacent to the mobile home park."
