Earlier on Monday it had been reported that the number of those missing had fallen to 103 from 195. However, the number tripled after&nbsp;Wajima, one of the worst-hit places after the January 1 earthquake, raised the&nbsp;number of people unaccounted for&nbsp;from 31 to 281, reported AFP.&nbsp;

According to local officials, snow has complicated rescue efforts after the earthquake, the shockwaves from which toppled buildings, sparked a major fire and triggered tsunami waves over a metre high.

Japan has since deployed thousands of rescue workers across the country. However, their efforts have been hampered by an estimated 1,000 landslides following the earthquake. To make matters worse, the region has also been blanketed in snow in the last two days.&nbsp;

The regional government has warned that continuous rain would lead to more landslides and heavy snow could cause more buildings to collapse under its weight.

The drop in temperature might also worsen conditions for more than 28,800 people in 404 government shelters.&nbsp;

As many as 2,000 people in several communities in the remote peninsula have been cut off due to damaged roads. Additionally, landslides have blocked aid vehicles carrying relief materials for areas suffering water and power outages.&nbsp;

The New Year started on a sombre note for Japan as on the afternoon of January 1, the powerful quake shook the Noto Peninsula, located on the west coast of the quake-prone country.

“The first priority has been to rescue people under the rubble, and to reach isolated communities,” said Japan’s Prime Minister Fumio Kishida in an interview with NHK on Sunday.

He also spoke about how the military has sent small groups of troops to each of the isolated communities on foot. The government has also “deployed various police and fire department helicopters” to reach them, Kishida added.&nbsp;

At least 126&nbsp;people have been killed after a 6.2 magnitude earthquake jolted a remote and mountainous county in northwest China, reported the country’s state media, on Tuesday (Dec 19).&nbsp;

The quake struck Jishishan county in China’s northwestern province of Gansu at around 11:59 am (local time), on Monday (Dec 18) at a depth of 10 kilometres, according to the China Earthquake Networks Center (CENC).

<h2>What happened?</h2>

At least 113&nbsp;people have been killed and over 530&nbsp;others have been injured&nbsp;in the Gansu province after the strong, shallow tremor, reported the Chinese state media citing provincial officials, as of Tuesday afternoon.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, at least 13&nbsp;others were killed and 182&nbsp;injured in the city of Haidong in the neighbouring province of Qinghai.&nbsp;

The quake has reportedly caused significant damage, including collapsed buildings and houses, prompting people to run to the street for safety, reported Chinese state news agency Xinhua. 
 
The number of people missing in the quake’s aftermath was later updated to 20 people.&nbsp;

<h2>Search and rescue amid freezing temperatures</h2>

Rescue and relief efforts are underway and a working group has been dispatched to assess the impact of the disaster, the state media has reported. Chinese President Xi Jinping has called for “all-out efforts” for search and relief work as well as ensuring the safety of the survivors.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, China’s finance ministry and emergency management ministry allocated $27.9 million (200 million yuan) for the earthquake-hit Gansu and Qinghai provinces, reported CCTV.&nbsp;

Around 2,200 rescue personnel from various local departments as well as professional emergency rescue teams were dispatched, while military and police were also engaged in rescue work, reported the Chinese news agency.

A report by AFP citing footage of the quake’s aftermath from one of the worst-hit areas by CCTV shows residents warming themselves by a fire while emergency services set up tents. Power and water supplies were disrupted in some local villages, reported Xinhua.&nbsp;

The temperature in Linxia, Gansu, near where the quake occurred, was about minus 14 degrees Celsius&nbsp;as of Tuesday morning.&nbsp;

<h2>About the earthquake</h2>

According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the&nbsp;magnitude of the quake was 5.9 and it struck Gansu&nbsp;near the border with Qinghai, where Haidong is located. The strong tremors, according to Xinhua, were felt in many parts of neighbouring Qinghai province.&nbsp;

The epicentre of the earthquake is said to be five kilometres away from the border between Gansu and the neighbouring province and around 100 kilometres southwest of Gansu province’s capital, Lanzhou.&nbsp;

The region also saw a total of nine aftershocks at magnitude 3.0 and above, on Tuesday morning, two of which were at least 4.0 in magnitude, according to CENC.&nbsp;

China: Death toll rises to at least 126 after earthquake in Gansu province

Spewing lava and smoke in an awe-inspiring yet frightening display, a volcano in Southwest Iceland erupted late on Monday after weeks of intense earthquake activity, Iceland's Meteorological Office said.

The eruption comes as, for weeks, the Nordic country remained on high alert awaiting a potential eruption in the Reykjanes&nbsp;peninsula. Last month, the threat even prompted evacuation orders.&nbsp;

<h2>The eruption</h2>

The volcanic eruption happened around 10:17 pm local time. Over an hour before that, a string of earthquakes also shook the area, officials said.

"At 22:17 this evening, a volcanic eruption began north of Grindavík on the Reykjanes peninsula," said the IMO.

On its website, it posted "Warning: Eruption has started north of Grindavík by Hagafell."

"Seismic activity together with measurements from GPS devices indicate that the magma is moving to the southwest and the eruption may continue in the direction of Grindavík," said the Met Office.

Livestreams and images of the eruption show molten rock spewing from fissures in the ground, with the bright yellow-orange lava appearing brighter in contrast with the dark night sky.

As per a Reuters report citing the Met Office, cracks in the earth's surface were around 3.5 km long and had grown rapidly. Every second, these fissures became the gateway for some 100 to 200 cubic metres (3,530 to 7,060 cubic feet) of lava. This, as per the Met Office, is several times more than in previous eruptions in the area.

<h2>The unpredictability</h2>

Local police have raised their alert level, the public has been warned to avoid approaching the area while emergency personnel assess the situation.

Previously, on 11 November, roughly 4,000 residents of Grindavík, a fishing port around 40 kilometres (24.85 miles) from the capital, were evacuated overnight amid fears of an eruption.

As per AFP, in Iceland, volcanic eruptions aren't uncommon. The country is home to 33 active volcano systems, the highest in Europe. However, this eruption is unpredictable and carries danger as the Reykjanes peninsula hadn't experienced an eruption in eight centuries, that is until 2021.

Since then, three eruptions have struck the area, which volcanologists fear may be the start of a new era of activity in the region.

Scientists identified a high level of hexavalent chromium or chromium 6. It is popularly known as the 'Erin Brockovich' chemical.

However, the rescue workers are facing a number of challenges including defective telecommunications, and blocked or damaged roads, said Yunus, in a statement on Monday.&nbsp;

Queen Sendiga, commissioner of the Northern Manyara region, told reporters, late Sunday that the local authorities are still searching for bodies trapped in the mud. At least 100 houses have been swallowed by a landslide in the village of Katesh in Hanang district, said Sendiga.&nbsp;

She also said that people from around 28 households are still missing.&nbsp;

The gusts as high as 207 km/h were recorded at Pointe du Raz while the port city of Brest saw winds hit 156 km/h, said the local officials.&nbsp;

Authorities in Finistere and Brittany have urged people to stay at home and avoid winds. Around 1.2 million French homes lost electricity overnight after the storm lashed the northwest coast, and most remained without power on Thursday.&nbsp;

According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, 280 kilometres (170 miles) south of Tokyo, Hachijojima island was hit by tsunami waves of height 60 centimetres (24 inches). Smaller tsunami waves of 40cm and 20 cm were recorded in the western Kochi prefecture and southern Miyazaki prefecture, respectively.

Seismologists from JMA, as per an AFP report, said there were no immediate reports of damage from the minor waves generated.

However, despite that, Tateyama city of Chiba, located near Tokyo, had urged residents in coastal areas to evacuate after the advisory.

During a press conference, JMA official Toshihiro Shimoyama warned that "it is dangerous in the sea and near the coast".

A report by BBC citing a local radio station said that the death toll could be as high as 40 since many people are still missing and residents have been forced to pull bodies out of the debris with their bare hands due to the floods.

The poor neighbourhood of Mbankolo is said to be among the worst affected by the disaster. According to public broadcaster CRTV and a local official, torrential rainfall caused a dam containing a man-made lake situated on higher ground to burst.

Housing and Urban Development Minister Celestine Ketcha Court told BBC that the team of rescuers would “work all day long to continue finding people”.&nbsp;

An AFP journalist reported that a couple of exhausted-looking local residents were seen holding corners of a large sheet carrying what one said were the bodies of two children.&nbsp;

Families of the deceased will receive compensation of ₹4 lakh each ($4,812 each).

The Indian Air Force (IAF) has faced difficulties in conducting rescue operations due to adverse weather conditions, including low cloud cover and visibility in the Lachen and Lachung valleys. Aerial rescue operations are expected to resume once the weather clears.

Flash floods and cloudbursts have caused widespread destruction in Sikkim, affecting more than 25,000 people, damaging nearly 1,200 homes, and destroying 13 bridges.

Researchers at United States' Pennsylvania State University decided to put the theorised "wet bulb temperature" to the test — the point at which sweat no longer evaporates off the skin, leading to heatstroke and eventually death. This was earlier measured using wet cloth and thermometers.

Measuring the core temperatures of healthy, young people inside a heat chamber, researchers found that the study participants reached their "critical environmental limit" at a wet bulb temperature of 30.6 degree&nbsp;Celsius, much lower than previously theorised.

Climate change and temperature rise

The previously thought heat, humidity-bearing capacity of humans (35 degrees Celsius) as per an AFP report has only been breached a few times, particularly in South Asia and the Persian Gulf.&nbsp;

Climate change, however, is leading to an increase in dangerous wet bulb events, with the frequency of such events doubling over the past 40 years, said Colin Raymond of NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory while talking to AFP.

Raymond's research indicates that if the world warms 2.5 degrees above pre-industrial levels, these wet bulb events will get even more frequent.

A recent report by&nbsp;European Union's climate change service Copernicus shows that oceans&nbsp;have hit their hottest-ever recorded temperature.&nbsp;Beating a 2016 record, the daily global sea surface temperatures have reached 20.96C, which is far above the average for this time of the year, reports BBC. In 2016, a record was set when the naturally occurring El Niño was in full swing.

Experts warn that extreme heat events, even below the 35-degree limit, can be deadly. They say that different people have different thresholds based on factors such as age, health, and even socioeconomic conditions.&nbsp;They point out that people least able to protect themselves from extreme heat will suffer the most.&nbsp;

Approximately a quarter of Thailand's Upper Gulf is presently affected, with roughly half appearing green, while the other portion nearer the shore has turned brown due to pollution and the presence of deceased plankton, notes the scientist.

Tanuspong explains the fate of the plankton: "The plankton in the water will (either) consume all the nutrients and thrive, or they will die due to a lack of light. Their carcasses will then sink to the seabed and decompose." This decomposition process contributes to low oxygen conditions in the water, further impacting marine life.

Along this coastline, more than 260 mussel farming plots float, and over 80 per cent of them have already borne the brunt of the bloom, reports an official from the Chonburi Fisheries Association.

According to data from the Department of Fisheries in 2021, Chonburi typically produces 2,086 tonnes (4.6 million lbs) of mussels annually, valued at 26,655,000 Thai Baht ($1 million).

There are no live ones left, they're all dead, including the oysters too. Normally, they would cling (to the rope) here." He estimates that he has already borne losses that surpass 500,000 baht ($14,000).

A day earlier Greek officials said they were making headway in bringing the wildfire which experts have classified as a “megafire” in Dadia National Park, also in the northern part of the country.&nbsp;

“A man died after a wall collapsed near Volos city, probably due to bad weather,” a fire brigade official told Reuters. The Athens News Agency identified the man as a cattle breeder who was trying to reach his animals.

Fire brigade spokesperson Ioannis Artopoios told Skai television that a man was missing from Volos, a port city on the Pagasetic Gulf after his car was swept away by the rainstorm. “His son came out (of the car) but the father was carried away and there is a search operation under way right now,” said Artopoios.&nbsp;

Multiple cars in Volos were seen being washed away by torrential rain onto muddy shores, reported Reuters, citing footage from the state broadcaster ERT. Officials have also restricted traffic in the wider area of Volos due to the floods.&nbsp;

The heavy rain-triggered floods were reported just days after deadly wildfires ravaged areas in northern Greece. The “megafire” blaze in Dalia has destroyed more than 81,000 hectares of the forested area, protected by the European agency Natura 2000, as of Monday (Sep 4).&nbsp;

“According to the latest information from our firefighters, the Dadia fire front is on its way to being completely under control,” said government spokesman Pavlos Marinakis.&nbsp;

Hurricane Hilary, a category four storm, is hurtling towards Mexico's Baja California peninsula on Friday, announced the United States's National Hurricane Center (NHC) as it issued its first ever tropical storm watch for California.

The US government agency also warned of a possibility of life-threatening and possibly catastrophic floods.

"Life-threatening and potentially catastrophic flooding are likely over much of Baja California and Southern California this weekend and early next week," said the Miami-based agency in its latest advisory.

The NHC as per a Reuters report said that it expects the powerful storm to near Mexico's popular Cabo San Lucas resort city by late Friday. The US government agency said that the hurricane should weaken before hitting the US West Coast this weekend. However, they warned that nevertheless, it will bring dangerous rains.

"If you've got weekend plans, it's probably time to start altering those plans," said NHC Deputy Director Jamie Rhome, as per the report. Rhome warned that the area from San Diego to Los Angeles and Las Vegas faced flood risks, in particular Palm Springs area will be at high risk when the storm hits this weekend.

<h2>Category 4 storm</h2>

As per the NHC advisory, hurricane Hilary was moving West northwest at nearly 12 mph or 19 kilometres per hour. The storm is packing a maximum sustained wind of nearly 130 mph or 215 kilometres per hour. It was upgraded to a category 4 storm overnight.&nbsp;

Rhome said that while icy waters of the California coastline typically weaken hurricanes and tropical storms, "this system is expected to hold on to its strength because it will be moving fast."

He also said that California and Southern Nevada face the risk of severe flooding caused by up to 10 inches or 25.4 centimetres of rainfall. The NHC, as per Reuters, warned a storm surge could cause coastal flooding and destructive waves along Mexico's Baja California peninsula.

After a record-breaking summer heat wave, hurricane Hilary's heavy rainfall is expected to hit California Nevada and neighbouring Arizona. In July, Phoenix, Arizona, both endured a month-long stretch of temperatures that exceeded 110 degrees Fahrenheit or 43 degrees Celsius.&nbsp;

As per the National Weather Service, the region was trapped under a "heat dome" of stagnant air. In mid-July, California's Death Valley desert hit temperatures exceeding 128 Fahrenheit or 53 degrees Celsius. This was among the highest temperatures recorded on the planet in the past 90 years.

"If you've got weekend plans, it's probably time to start altering those plans," said NHC Deputy Director Jamie Rhome, as per the report. Rhome warned that the area from San Diego to Los Angeles and Las Vegas faced flood risks, in particular Palm Springs area will be at high risk when the storm hits this weekend. Category 4 storm As per the NHC advisory, hurricane Hilary was moving West northwest at nearly 12 mph or 19 kilometres per hour. The storm is packing a maximum sustained wind of nearly 130 mph or 215 kilometres per hour. It was upgraded to a category 4 storm overnight. Rhome said that while icy waters of the California coastline typically weaken hurricanes and tropical storms, "this system is expected to hold on to its strength because it will be moving fast." The NHC, as per Reuters, warned a storm surge could cause coastal flooding and destructive waves along Mexico's Baja California peninsula. After a record-breaking summer heat wave, hurricane Hilary's heavy rainfall is expected to hit California Nevada and neighbouring Arizona. In July, Phoenix, Arizona, both endured a month-long stretch of temperatures that exceeded 110 degrees Fahrenheit or 43 degrees Celsius. As per the National Weather Service, the region was trapped under a "heat dome" of stagnant air. In mid-July, California's Death Valley desert hit temperatures exceeding 128 Fahrenheit or 53 degrees Celsius. This was among the highest temperatures recorded on the planet in the past 90 years. Taking to social media platform X (formerly Twitter), Bogotá's mayor, Claudia Lopez, reassured the public and urged them to remain calm and cautious.&nbsp;

Lopez said that the city had only received reports of minor incidents.

There were only "reports of people trapped in elevators and other minor events. Nothing serious," she said.&nbsp;

In another post, Lopez reported that "the only serious incident reported was the throwing of a woman in Madelena from the tenth floor of an apartment building, apparently due to nervous disorder."

Authorities have&nbsp;issued an advisory for the citizens, asking them to "re-enter your homes and workplaces." The post also lists what is to be done in case of another tremor.

As per AFP, reports of a landslide have emerged from Villavicencio. Furthermore, as per an update by the National Unit for Disaster Risk Management, only windows of homes and businesses were affected in El Calvario, the town closest to the epicentre.&nbsp;Colombia's civil defence agency reported that&nbsp;throughout the entire municipality of Calvario,&nbsp;residents were evacuated.

While the Colombian Geological Survey (CGS), says that the earthquake had a magnitude of 6.1, the US Geological Survey (USGS) recorded it slightly higher at 6.3.&nbsp;

As per the Colombian agency, the quake occurred at 12:04 pm (1704 GMT). Its epicentre was located in the town of El Calvario in central Colombia, approximately 40 kilometres southeast of Bogotá.&nbsp;

Shortly after the massive tremor struck Bogotá, an aftershock of magnitude 5.9 followed, as reported by the CGS on social media. As per Reuters, another&nbsp;aftershock was measured at 4.8 magnitude.

Netizens reported that the earthquake was also felt in nearby cities, including Villavicencio, Bucaramanga, Tunja, and Ibague. All of these are located in the vicinity of the quake's epicentre.
