Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday said that BRICS nations contribute to half of global economic development.

"BRICS nations contribute 50% to the economic development of the world. Despite global recession BRICS nations have contributed to economic development and brought crores of people out of poverty," said PM Modi at BRICS business forum.

Addressing the Dialogue with BRICS Business Council and New Development Bank, Prime Minister Modi urged the BRICS Business Council to create a roadmap to achieve the USD 500 billion intra-BRICS trade target by the next summit.

Calling India a land of limitless opportunities, the prime minister urged the business leaders of the BRICS nations to invest in India, particularly in its infrastructure development.

"India is the world's most open and investment-friendly economy due to political stability, predictable policy and business-friendly reforms," Modi said.

“Tax and Customs procedures between us five countries are getting easier. The business environment is getting easier with the collaboration between Intellectual Property Rights, and Banks. I request the BRICS Business Forum to study the necessary business initiatives to take full advantage of the opportunities thus generated,” Modi said while speaking at the BRICS Business Forum here.

“Intra-BRICS business and investment targets should be ambitious. Your suggestions will be helpful to further reduce the cost of trade between us,” he told the forum.

He also urged the BRICS business leaders to identify the priority areas in business for the next ten years and make a blueprint of it.

According to the BRICS joint statement, the five countries look forward to the opening of the two remaining NDB Regional Offices in Russia and India in 2020.

"Congress had hurriedly finalised very weak FTAs with ASEAN and South Korea in 2010 and Malaysia and Japan in 2011 opening Indian markets to imports with very little benefits in return," Nadda said.

The BJP working president said that during the UPA government between 2004 and 2014, India`s trade deficit with these countries increased 11 fold from $7 billion in 2004 to $78 billion in 2014.

"The Indian negotiators did not accept a bad deal on any issue and ensured that the concerns of India, particularly over the trade deficit and better market opportunities for Indian goods were put forth very strongly. Since several issues remained unresolved until today, Modi decided India will not join RCEP," he said.

Nadda said that the decision was taken by the Prime Minister to protect the interest of India`s MSMEs, dairy, farmers, pharmaceutical, steel, chemical and other manufacturing sectors against unfair imports.

"Prime Minister Narendra Modi has upheld Mahatma Gandhi`s principles and not accepted a deal which did not safeguard the interests of the poor. He is recognized the world over as a `tough negotiator` and he has once again demonstrated his resolve to protect the interest of the people of India at all times," Nadda added.

India had backed out from RCEP, upholding that the country remains committed to a comprehensive and balanced outcome of negotiations and seeks balance across goods, services and investments and also within each pillar.

The top court in its judgement said the disputed land in Ayodhya will be given to a government-run trust to build a temple and five acres of suitable land will be given to Sunni Waqf Board for a mosque.

In a series of tweets, the Prime Minister said that the ruling should not be seen as a win or loss for anyone and called for maintaining peace and harmony post-Ayodhya verdict.

"The Honourable Supreme Court has given its verdict on the Ayodhya issue. This verdict shouldn't be seen as a win or loss for anybody. Be it Ram Bhakti or Rahim Bhakti, it is imperative that we strengthen the spirit of Rashtra Bhakti. May peace and harmony prevail!" he tweeted.

"The halls of justice have amicably concluded a matter going on for decades. Every side, every point of view was given adequate time and opportunity to express differing points of view. This verdict will further increase people's faith in judicial processes," Modi said.

The Prime Minister outlined that the verdict is notable because "it highlights that any dispute can be amicably solved in the spirit of due process of law, it reaffirms the independence, transparency and farsightedness of our judiciary and it clearly illustrates everybody is equal before the law".

"The calm and peace maintained by 130 crore Indians in the run-up to today's verdict manifest India's inherent commitment to peaceful coexistence. May this very spirit of unity and togetherness power the development trajectory of our nation. May every Indian be empowered," Modi said in a follow-up tweet.

A five-judge constitution bench presided by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi and comprising Justices SA Bobde, DY Chandrachud, Ashok Bhushan and S Abdul Nazeer passed the order on a batch of petitions against the 2010 order of the Allahabad High Court which trifurcated the site between the parties - Ramlalla Virajman, Sunni Central Waqf Board and Nirmohi Akhara.

A decades-long legal dispute was fought by Hindu Mahasabha, a sect of Hindu monks Nirmohi Akhara and Muslim Waqf Board over 2.77 acres of land in Ayodhya.

"The government will complete the work with utmost responsibility," Modi said addressing a gathering of BJP leaders along with Resident Welfare Association (RWA) officeholders and members of unauthorised colonies.

The group had arrived to meet PM Narendra Modi at his residence to thank him for the Cabinet`s decision to give ownership rights to 40 lakh people living in unauthorised colonies in Delhi.

On October 23, the Union Cabinet announced that it had approved regulations for conferring and recognising ownership rights to residents of unauthorised colonies, which would benefit 40 lakh residents of the national capital.

The Cabinet also gave its approval to bringing a Bill in the next session of Parliament to implement the proposal.

Information and Broadcasting Minister Prakash Javadekar, announcing the move, said that the decision will benefit more than 40 lakh residents of unauthorised colonies spread over around 175 sq km as development and redevelopment can now take place in these colonies resulting in a clean, secure and healthy living environment.

The decision is applicable to 1,797 identified unauthorised colonies that are inhabited by lower-income groups and does not apply to 69 affluent colonies identified by DDA including Sainik Farms, Mahendru Enclave and Anant Ram Dairy.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the state-of-the-art Passenger Terminal Building (PTB) Complex at Kartarpur Corridor in Dera Baba Nanak of Punjab's Gurdaspur district on Saturday.

Earlier this week, Home Minister Amit Shah had on Twitter urged people to "witness history being created" on November 9 with the inauguration of the corridor.

"With the opening of Kartarpur Sahib corridor, when we are marking Shri Guru Nanak Dev Ji's 550th Parkash Purab, PM @narendramodi has realised the long-cherished dream of millions. On 9th, let's witness history being created as PM @narendramodi dedicates this corridor to the nation," read Shah's tweet from November 6.

The much-awaited corridor will have all the necessary passenger amenities to facilitate pilgrims intending to visit the Gurdwara Kartarpur Sahib in Pakistan.

The design and quality parameters also have been prepared to keep in view the aspirations and religious sentiments of the followers of Guru Nanak Dev, the founder of Sikhism.

The design of the PTB Complex has been inspired by the symbol 'Khanda' which represents the values of oneness and humanity.

It is supposed to have adequate immigration and customs clearance facilities to process the smooth movement of approximately 5,000 pilgrims per day.

Furthermore, the complex will have open areas for kiosks, cloakrooms and adequate parking space. The passage up to the Zero Point on the International Border will also be covered.

India and Pakistan had on October 24 signed an agreement on the modalities for operationalising the Kartarpur Sahib Corridor, paving way for its inauguration ahead of the 550th birth anniversary of the Sikh Guru.

The corridor will facilitate visa-free movement but Indian pilgrims are required to carry their passports and will have to just obtain a permit to visit Kartarpur Sahib Gurdwara, which was established by Guru Nanak Dev in 1522.

The foundation stone for the Kartarpur Corridor was laid down on the Indian side on November 26, 2018. Two days later, the foundation stone was laid on the Pakistani side.

However, Pakistan has not agreed to India's demand to make the Kartarpur Gurdwara's visit charge-free.

Following a low-key ceremony to sign the agreement, India had expressed disappointment at Pakistan's refusal to waive USD 20 service charge on Indians visiting Kartarpur Sahib Gurdwara and urged it to reconsider its decision given the "religious and spiritual sentiments" of the pilgrims.

According to the Home Ministry, the agreement, which lays a formal framework for operationalising the corridor, stated that Indian pilgrims of all faiths and persons of Indian origin can use the corridor.

The travel will be visa-free and pilgrims need to carry only a valid passport. Persons of Indian-Origin need to carry OCI (Overseas Citizenship of India) card along with the passport of their country.

Meanwhile, Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan will also inaugurate the other side of the Kartarpur Corridor on the same day, apart from other events that will be hosted to mark Guru Nanak Dev's birth anniversary.

BJP MLA urges PM Narendra Modi to direct IAF to sprinkle water in Delhi NCR

India on Monday pulled out of the proposed Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) stating that the agreement “does not satisfactorily address India's outstanding issues and concerns.”

Prime Minister Modi, while speaking at the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) summit in Thailand said that “neither the Talisman of Gandhiji nor my own conscience permits me to join the RCEP.”

RCEP is a proposed Free Trade Agreement (FTA) that was being negotiated between 16 countries - the 10 member states of ASEAN along with India, Australia, China, Korea, Japan, and New Zealand.

While the exact details of what the agreement entails are yet to be released, its aim, as established in 2012 in Cambodia, was to increase trade by decreasing tariffs and barriers between member states, boost exports, and create an alternative market for investment.

India chose to withhold from joining the trade agreement due to “significant outstanding issues, which remain unresolved”.

"The present form of the RCEP agreement does not fully reflect the basic spirit and the agreed guiding principles of RCEP,” Prime Minister Narendra Modi said.

New Delhi’s stand on data localisation is one of the key issues at conflict as RCEP norms support the free flow of data which hampers India’s digital sovereignty.

According to NITI Aayog, the policy think tank of India, the country has a growing trade deficit with ASEAN member states and China. Participating in RCEP would have only widened these deficits.

With the ongoing United States-China trade war, signing the trade agreement would have interfered with India's attempt to augment its ties with the United States.

China’s dumping policy also presented itself as a potential threat to India, where access to an open market might have lead China to dump its products in regional Indian markets.

India felt that there was “inadequate” protection provided to its domestic markets which would have had to suffer losses as cheaper products from China threatened to “flood” Indian markets.

The dairy industry was also expected to face the burden of the trade deal due to the introduction of competition from New Zealand and Australia.

India also failed to receive any assurance on its demand for greater market access and concerns over non-tariff barriers as China has in the past used these to curtail India’s exports to the country.

India expressed dismay at 2014 being set as the base year for tariff reductions instead of 2013. This would have gone against the country's interests as several import duties have gone up since 2014.

RCEP is supposed to be one of the world’s largest trade pacts and the largest regional trading agreement yet. The member countries account for half of the world’s population and almost one-third of the Global Gross Domestic Product.

Becoming a member of the RCEP would have provided New Delhi with an alternative market, reducing its dependence on Western nation-states, an increase in export-oriented Foreign Direct Investment (FDI), and a boost to its service sector.

Although India currently backed out of one of the biggest free trade deals in the world, the remaining 15 members agreed on the negotiated terms and will be signing it next year.

India will not be joining the mega trading deal - Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP), as its key concerns have not been addressed with Prime Minister Narendra Modi making it clear that New Delhi will not compromise on its "core interests".

While speaking at the third RCEP meet in Bangkok, PM Modi said, "The present form of the RCEP agreement does not fully reflect the basic spirt and the agreed guiding principles of RCEP. It also does not satisfactorily address India's outstanding issues and concerns. In such a situation, it is not possible for India to join the RCEP agreement."

"When I measure the RCEP agreement with respect to the interests of all Indians, I do not get a positive answer. Therefore, neither the Talisman of Gandhiji nor my own conscience permits me to join the RCEP, " the Indian prime minister added.

The key issues that concerned New Delhi included inadequate protection against import surge, insufficient differential with China, keeping the base year as 2014 and no credible assurances on market access and non-tariff barriers.

Meanwhile, ASEAN sources reacting to the development called it a "win win outcome" with "both side getting to inform their constituencies back home that they got a deal (RCEP 15) & India gets to tell its constituencies that India held out to safeguard domestic interests."

Adding, "If a deal could be struck before the 15 complete their legal scrubbing, then it could be 16 members. If not, 15 will proceed ahead without India. Meanwhile, 15 will be able to benefit, although not as much as with India in RCEP."

Calling "RCEP deal is better for the world economy", ASEAN sources said "RCEP deal bucks the trend of protectionism being equated with nationalism."

The negotiation for the deal started in 2012 in Cambodia and will be one of the biggest Free trade agreement in the world.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has gifted German Chancellor Angela Merkel, who is currently in India, an exquisite handloom woollen khadi stole from Ladakh and a Ratnam pen.

The stole, known as 'Call of Ladakh', has an intricate traditional Ladakhi border pattern and four corner motifs, in dark wool.

The yarn is hand-spun using the finest sheep wool, on a traditional charkha, by native Ladakhi women, in the harsh winter months. The Ratnam Pen, named after KV Ratnam (originally from a family of goldsmiths in Rajahmundry) was made iconic by Mahatma Gandhi. It is still produced even today, its original form, by KV Ratnam and Sons - Ratnam Ballpen Works, a company owned by Ratnam`s descendants.

Even today, it has a barrel for filling ink using a dropper and the Genius Iridium Nib from Germany.

Notably, Mahatma Gandhi had written over 31,000 letters in his quest to take India to its freedom. Many of these letters were written using the pen that was made for him in 1934 by Ratnam, by using indigenous materials which were based upon Mahatma Gandhi's request to him to create 'swadeshi' (locally made) products - be it a pin or a pen.

A young Ratnam, took on the challenge and developed an ink pen which won him Mahatma Gandhi's praise, evident when the latter wrote him a letter saying, "Dear Ratnam, I have used the fountain pen and it seems to be a good substitute to the foreign pens, one sees in the bazaar."

A copy of the prized letter has been presented in a 'recycled wood' and brass frame, created to match the vintage aesthetic of the Ratnam pen.

Merkel is currently on a three-day visit to India. She arrived in New Delhi on Thursday and held talks with Modi on several bilateral issues the following day.

The two countries signed over 20 agreements including several in the form of Joint Declaration of Intent (JDI) in artificial intelligence (AI), education, agriculture, maritime technology sectors among others.

Saudi Commerce Minister Majid bin Abdullah Al Qasabi speaking to WION's diplomatic correspondent Sidhant Sibal in Riyadh said India as an investment destination and added, Indian friends and bothers have been a forklift to the Saudi economy.

Saudi Commerce Minister Majid bin Abdullah Al Qasabi speaking to WION's diplomatic correspondent Sidhant Sibal in Riyadh said India as an investment destination and added, Indian friends and bothers have been a forklift to the Saudi economy. They are the largest workforce force of Saudi Arabia and constitute 22 per cent of our manpower resource. Edited excerpts: WION: Saudi Arabia has plans to invest $100 bn in India. Can you provide us with the break up? Majid bin Abdullah Al Qasabi: As you know, it takes two to tango. Both leaders have a great relation, understanding and friendship. We value the Indian people, appreciate the efforts taken in the last 60 years. Indian friends and bothers have been a forklift to the Saudi economy. They are the largest workforce force of Saudi Arabia and constitute 22 per cent of our manpower resource. They are disciplined and highly committed people. So India is an important trading partner to Saudi Arabia and we support India in the energy supply of oil. It is a win-win situation and we see we can do more with India. We can leverage the advantage India has in innovation, high-tech, and entrepreneurship. Regarding the opportunities, we started with Aramco, it has decided to build a refinery and it is a huge investment. It's a commitment and we are waiting for the government of India to choose the land. We have understood as the PM said that a new regional government has been chosen, so he expects in a very short time the land will be decided. So the ball is now in India's court. It's a beginning with $35 billion investment. We have decided, for every stream identified, there will be a champion from both parties. A council has been created by both the leaders and this council which is supported and headed by both leaders will accelerate the achievement. WION: How do u see the visit of Indian PM Modi? Majid bin Abdullah Al Qasabi: The visit was very successful. It's extremely successful because first, we have learnt so much more about India through such communication. It is through such meetings we learn and understand each other. As we said earlier, communication, communication and communication because if we don't communicate, we misunderstand each other, we miss-perceive each other and misjudge others. We are guilty of being absent and being silent. WION: How do you see India as an investment destination vis-a-vis Pakistan? Majid bin Abdullah Al Qasabi: I don't think we should compare India with Pakistan. As countries India and Pakistan have potential. Pakistan is a great country and has a distinctive competence. Saudi Arabia looks at all interests and values its relationship with Pakistan as well as India.

Indian Prime Minister and the Saudi crown prince will be meeting every two years at summit level as part of the newly formed strategic partnership council which was inked during PM Modi's visit to the Kingdom on Tuesday. Speaking exclusively to our principal diplomatic correspondent Sidhant Sibal in Riyadh, Indian envoy to Saudi Ausaf Sayeed said Indian foreign minister and trade minister will be meeting annually as part of the council. Here is the full transcript of the interview. WION: How do you see the visit of PM Modi? Ausaf Sayeed: It was one of the most successful visits by PM abroad. The biggest outcome is the launching of the strategic council at the level of PM and the Crown Prince. There were dozens of agreement which were signed and these were all in different sectors and included civil aviation defence, security cooperation, small and medium enterprises. Another significant outcome was the launching of the RuPay card, integration of the e-migrate system to its Saudi counterpart. Overall it has been a very good visit. There have been very fruitful discussions between our Prime Minister and King Salman, followed by equally intense and good discussions which covered all sectors. Eight cabinet ministers had also joined the discussions from the Saudi side. Overall I would say a very successful visit. WION: How do see the relationship between the two countries panning out? Ausaf Sayeed: The visit came eight months after Crown Prince's visit and the very fact that successive visits are taking place at a high level, itself is a reflection that the two countries seek each other as dependable friends and strategic partners; and the mandate of the strategic partnership council is itself is that there will be mandatory summit level meet in two years and ministerial-level engagement once every year which will be apart from the meetings on the sidelines of international grouping like G20 every year. We look forward to furthering engaging relationship which will take our relationship to the next level in many domains.
