Australian Open shocker: Defending champion Naomi Osaka knocked out by Coco Gauff

Tennis champion <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/humbled-naomi-osaka-reveals-pressure-of-being-number-one-254168">Naomi Osaka</a> threw a tantrum against Zheng Saisai at the Australian Open but offered a light-hearted apology to her racket sponsor after overcoming her frustrations to set up a third-round clash with <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/tennis-naomi-osaka-trolls-serena-williams-calls-her-mom-274595">Coco Gauff</a>.

Third-seed Osaka threw her racket after dropping serve early in the second set, slammed a ball into the court and gave her racket a kick for good measure before regaining her composure and earning a 6-2 6-4 win on a gusty day at Margaret Court Arena.
&nbsp;
“I mean, my racket just magically flew out of my hand,” Osaka told reporters with a smile. “I couldn’t control it. Sorry, Yonex. I think that’s how I dealt with my frustration. It was a bit childish. I just want to play one match without throwing my racket or kicking it. That’s all I want.”

The match echoed of her tumultuous third-round win over Hsieh Su-wei at the same venue last year, when Osaka was distracted by her opponent's unorthodox technique of slices and drop-shots.

Hsieh was ultimately overhauled by Osaka and she claimed her second Grand Slam Title with another thunderous victory over Petra Kvitova.

“Yeah, it’s really tough, because you start thinking she’s not hitting winners,” said Osaka who was determined to avoid a third set against Zheng.

“You’re the one making all the errors. And you try to tell yourself not to make that many errors, but you have to go for those balls. “So it’s like you’re walking a very fine line between being very aggressive or attempting to push but that’s her game. So it’s very hard.”

Osaka was broken again after her tantrum and fell 4-2 behind, but fought off her rainclouds and shot Zheng down in a firestorm of winners.

Gauff set up a blockbuster rematch with her US&nbsp;Open conqueror Osaka by beating Romania’s Sorana Cirstea 4-6 6-3 7-5 at the Melbourne Arena. “I played her at the US&nbsp;Open so I know what to expect,” Gauff said of Osaka in her on-court interview. “I think she’s a great competitor on and off the court.”

The&nbsp;prize&nbsp;pool&nbsp;for the 2020&nbsp;<a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/andreescu-out-of-season-opener-in-auckland-with-knee-issues-269883">Australian&nbsp;Open</a>&nbsp;has been boosted by 14 per cent&nbsp;to A$71&nbsp;million&nbsp;($49.1&nbsp;million), organisers said on Tuesday, with the&nbsp;biggest&nbsp;gains&nbsp;for players exiting in the&nbsp;early&nbsp;rounds.

Players losing in the first round of qualifying at the year's first Grand Slam will take home A$20,000, up by a third from last year, while singles players who exit in the first round of the main draw will earn A$90,000, a jump of 20 per cent.

Before the start of the 2018&nbsp;Australian&nbsp;Open, Serb champion <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/novak-djokovic-guides-serbia-into-davis-cup-quarter-finals-263723">Novak Djokovic</a> had to distance himself from media reports that he had pushed for a revolt over the way revenues from the four Grand Slams were distributed to help reward a larger group of players.

"We have long been committed to improving the pay and conditions for a deeper&nbsp;pool&nbsp;of international tennis players," tournament director Craig Tiley said in a statement, noting that overall&nbsp;prize&nbsp;money has more than tripled since 2007.

"This year, we pushed to reward players competing&nbsp;early&nbsp;in the tournament in both singles and doubles."

The 2020 women's and men's singles champions will receive smaller increases in&nbsp;prize&nbsp;money, with both winners taking home A$4.12&nbsp;million, up $20,000.

Players can usually secure a main draw appearance in the tournament, which starts on January&nbsp;20, by having a ranking in the top 100.

Australian Open prize pool jumps to $49 million, biggest gains for early rounds

<a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/naomi-osaka-returns-to-winning-ways-with-pan-pacific-open-crown-251214">Naomi Osaka</a> has opened up on the immense pressure she placed on herself earlier this year that contributed to a slump in form and the loss of her top ranking.

The 21-year-old Japanese continued her late-season resurgence Sunday with victory over current number one Ashleigh Barty in Beijing's China Open final.

It meant back-to-back WTA Tour titles for Osaka, who won the Australian Open in January but then failed to match those high standards at the next three Grand Slams.&nbsp;

"I think this dip that I had really humbled me, it made me very motivated to be here right now," she said after coming back from a set down to defeat Australia's Barty.

Osaka, toppled as number one by Barty in June and now ranked third, said that after winning in Melbourne "I honestly was counting the ranking points.&nbsp;

"I was too stats-oriented after I won the Australian Open because there was this big thing about you're number one now.&nbsp;

"Then I felt like I shouldn't lose a match after that."

Osaka, who burst to the fore by beating Serena Williams to win the 2018 US Open, said that she is trying to "care" a little less to take the pressure off.

It is a mindset that helped her triumph in her home Pan Pacific Open last month, but was not in evidence in the early stages against Barty.

Osaka said that she was so desperate to win the Beijing final that she was in tears as she lost the first set, although she managed to hide it well and recovered her poise.

"Honestly, I don't think I'll ever feel the same way that I felt again right after Australia," she said of the sky-high expectations she placed on herself.

"There's no way, no way that's possible."

'Humbled' Naomi Osaka reveals pressure of being number one

Naomi Osaka lifted her first trophy since winning the Australian Open in January, blasting past Russia's Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova 6-2 6-3 in the Pan Pacific Open final on Sunday.

Her victory marked a return to the ruthless form that helped world number four Osaka claim last year's US&nbsp;Open crown before her Melbourne success, with the 21-year-old not dropping a set all week in Osaka, Japan.

"I just wanted to win this really bad," Osaka, who has endured several lows this season and sacked two coaches in the space of seven months, told a news conference.

She became the first Japanese player to win the title since Kimiko Date in 1995.

"I think what I learned from this tournament is just to focus every point, and just to have really positive energy," Osaka added.

Osaka relied on her powerful serve and groundstrokes to break world number 41 Pavlyuchenkova early in the contest and cruise through the opening set.

Chasing her first title in the tournament having made the final twice before -- in 2016 and 2018 when it was held in Tokyo -- Osaka started the second set in similarly dominant fashion but Pavlyuchenkova saved three break points to hold for 2-4.

However, there was no denying Osaka as she closed out the match on her third matchpoint and stayed on course to qualify for the season-ending WTA Finals in Shenzhen.

Top seed Osaka dispatched No. 9 seed Mertens 6-4, 6-1 in Osaka, western Japan, to reach her first final since winning the Australian Open.

The pair both held their serves for the first set until Osaka broke Mertens in the 10th game.

Osaka, 21, rounded into form in the second, and after the pair traded early breaks, won the last four games of the match to sprint to victory in just over an hour.

"It's been kind of rough like the past couple of months so I'm really glad that I made it to the final," she said.

She tried to stay calm because the 23-year-old Belgian player is "an amazing player and it's so hard to hit her balls," she said.

Earlier in the day, Osaka saw off Yulia Putintseva in straight sets, even as she was tricked at times by the Kazakh player's slices and drop shots.

"For me, I learned a lot from when I played her at Wimbledon, and I know that a hard court is where I feel most comfortable," Osaka told press after beeting Putintseva.

Last week, Osaka announced she was splitting with her coach, her second break-up this year as she battles to regain form after slipping from the top of the world rankings to number four.

Osaka had already caught the tennis world by surprise when she announced she was parting ways with coach Sascha Bajin, who had overseen her stunning rise to win two Grand Slams -- the US Open in 2018 and the Australian Open title in January.

Her challenger in the final will be Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova of Russia, 28, who ousted former world number one Angelique Kerber of Germany 6-3, 6-3.

Naomi Osaka advances to Pan Pacific final in home city

Returning from retirement to a competitive sport is a test of mental and physical strength; it is also on part of the sportsperson a sign of positive intent and true passion.

After a seven-year hiatus, four-time Grand Slam champion Belgium’s Kim Clijsters is ready to set an example which might inspire mothers who quit playing to take care of their kids.

Clijsters announced to the world that she will return to competitive tennis next year, but at the age of 36, is a winning comeback still possible?&nbsp;

"I don't really feel like I want to prove something," Clijsters said on the Women's Tennis Association Insider Podcast. "I think for me it's the challenge," she added.

Really? But why is winning not the ultimate goal? After all, fans come to watch for nail-biting finishes and clashes to remember.

Clijsters is not new to the retirement phenomena, the former US Open champion had initially retired way back in 2007 when she was just 23.&nbsp;

However, she made a return two years later post-childbirth. After that, she hung up her racquet again in 2012.

Mentioning fellow mums Serena Williams and Victoria Azarenka, who have also made comebacks, Clijsters said she is inspired to play at the highest level on one of the toughest individual women's sports in the world.

At an age when most players deal with injuries and surgeries, the former world No-1 is trying to relive her Slam-winning moments.

In an era dominated by teenagers like Bianca Andreescu, Coco Gauff, Naomi Osaka, Ashleigh Barty, her comeback is not going to be easy.

Besides familiar foes of her time, Clijsters will be up against dynamic teens she has never faced before. Losing to a teen may not go down well with her hard-won legacy at the elite level of women’s tennis.

Unlike men's tennis, WTA has seen many emerging faces lately. Although Clijsters said that she has nothing to prove and insisted that she won't play anything like a full season but still the first-round exits, if it happens will hurt her.

The history of “comeback” stories in women tennis is not exceptional. Serena Williams has to some extent impressed as she managed to play three Grand Slam finals since returning after having a baby two years ago.&nbsp;

Maria Sharapova, Victoria Azarenka, on the other hand, have all failed to flourish since returning to the game.&nbsp;

Clijsters had mentioned conditions on her availability as she said, "My head has to be clear for me to be able to leave the kids behind and to go to practice."

She also asserted that she does not want her kid's routine to change and also that she does not want to be away from her family for much more than a couple of weeks at a time.

It will be interesting to see how far Clijsters will go but if she is returning just for fun, then she is most welcome, but as far as serious top-level tennis is concerned that is another matter.

At 36, comeback queen Kim Clijsters will find it difficult against Biancas and Osakas of women tennis

Japan's tennis star Naomi Osaka on Friday said she is splitting with her coach Jermain Jenkins.

She made the announcement prior to the Pan Pacific Open tournament.

The 21-year-old broke the news on Twitter and said, "Writing this to let you guys know that I and Jay won't be working anymore. I am super grateful for the time we spent together and the things I learned on and off the court but I feel like now is an appropriate time for a change."

"Appreciate you, forever warmed by you, Nat and Jordon lol. Thank you for everything, it was a blast," she added.&nbsp;

Jenkins had become the coach of Osaka after the Australian Open this year.

The tennis star had earlier broken association with Sascha Bajin, who saw her rise to win two Grand Slams —&nbsp;US Open 2018 and Australian Open this year.

Osaka has had a mixed bag of a year. After winning the Australian Open, she had to face a humiliating first-round exit from Wimbledon after losing to Yulin Putintseva.

In the more recent US Open, she was knocked out in the round of 16 as she lost to Belinda Bencic.

Japan's Naomi Osaka announces split with coach

A rampaging <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/bianca-andreescu-to-face-serena-for-us-open-title-247884">Serena Williams</a> moved to the brink of a record-equalling 24th career Grand Slam title on Thursday storming past Elina Svitolina 6-3 6-1 to book her spot in the US Open final.

Since returning to action after the birth of her first child Williams has come agonisingly close to matching Margaret Court's mark three times and will have a chance on Saturday to do so in front of an adoring home crowd for a second successive year.

Last year Williams was left in tears following a chaotic and controversial loss to Naomi Osaka on Arthur Ashe Stadium. She has also lost two Wimbledon finals since her return.

Now all that stands between the 37-year-old and her Holy Grail is Canadian Bianca Andreescu or Swiss Belinda Bencic, who will meet in the other semi-final later on Thursday.

"To be in yet another final, it seems honestly crazy," said Williams. "But I don't really expect too much less.

"I've had so many chances to pass it (Court).

"If you look at the span of the career, the players I've played, it's amazing that I was able to get this many."

The semi-final offered a classic matchup of styles with Williams and her prodigious power up against Svitolina, one of the best counter punchers in the women's game.

Williams did not have her 'A' game in warm conditions but the former world number one knew exactly what was needed particularly on the big points.

"I don't think she played amazing today but she played very high level at the beginning where you had to make a difference," said Svitolina. "I think she knows what she has to do.

"There's lots of power behind her shots all the time.

"On the important moments she always steps up, always brings her best game."

The fifth-seeded Ukrainian had no shortage of chances herself but could not convert any of six break opportunities.

A ruthless Williams, however, bombarded Svitolina with punishing forehands and six aces to register her 101st US Open win, which tied her with Chris Evert for the most at Flushing Meadows.

Williams arrived at the year's final Grand Slam with a scowl and an all-business demeanour that has swatted aside a raft of challengers throughout her run to the final.

Any concerns over the back spasms that forced her to quit the Toronto final and out of Cincinnati were eased when she opened her Flushing Meadows account with a 6-1 6-1 thrashing of old rival Maria Sharapova.

That was followed by routine wins over Karolina Muchova, Petra Martic and Cat McNally before blasting her way into the last four with a jaw-dropping 44-minute 6-1 6-0 rout of China's Wang Qiang.

But as cold-blooded as those performances were, Williams 70-minute dismantling of Svitolina in front of a packed house said more by delivering an emphatic message she would not be content leaving Flushing Meadows without a share of Court's record.

The match had looked to be a long and competitive affair when Svitolina forced Williams to fight off three break points to hold her opening serve.

Williams, however, was ready for the challenge breaking Svitolina at the first opportunity by firing a winner down the line the Ukrainian could only look at.

That was the only break of a grinding first set but all Williams would need for a 1-0 lead.

It was not a good omen for Svitolina with Williams holding a 94-1 record when winning the first set at the US Open.

Svitolina would hold serve to open the second but Williams then swept through the next six games to advance to her 33rd Grand Slam final.

Serena Williams dismantles Elina Svitolina to reach US Open final

The prospect of a Naomi Osaka-Serena Williams US&nbsp;Open final rematch that hung tantalisingly over the year's final Grand Slam disappeared on Monday with Swiss Belinda Bencic the spoiler by claiming a 7-5, 6-4 fourth-round win over the Japanese holder.&nbsp;

It was a subdued exit for the world number one compared to the chaotic scenes of a year ago when Osaka claimed her first major title amidst controversy after an explosive confrontation between chair umpire Carlos Ramos and an enraged Williams.&nbsp;

That match saw Williams deducted a point and later a game for her behaviour, which included a smashed racket and calling Ramos a "liar", and provided the juiciest storyline coming into this year's US&nbsp;Open which picked up steam through the first week as the two women again appeared on a collision course.

Osaka is now gone though and, according to Williams, Ramos was never here. "I don't know who that is," she had said when earlier asked about Ramos and last year's events.

The Portuguese umpire is officiating at Flushing Meadows but not in any of Williams' matches so for the former-world number one it is out sight out of mind as she continues her quest for a record-equalling 24th career Grand Slam on Tuesday with a quarter-final meeting against China's Wang Qiang.

There were lessons learned last year in Osaka's victory and the 21-year-old Japanese, who will now lose her number one ranking to Australia's Ash Barty, said Monday's loss to the 13th seeded Swiss Bencic provided another learning moment.

Osaka's sadness

"For me, right now I have this feeling of sadness," said Osaka. "But I also feel like I have learned so much during this tournament.

"I feel like the steps that I have taken as a person have been much greater than I would imagine at this point.

"So I hope that I can keep growing."

The defeat means not only that Williams not have to face Osaka on the court, she will also not be dragged into questions about last year's fiery final, a topic she has made clear is off limits.

Tennis fans may still be seeking closure for what has grown into one of Grand Slam tennis's most infamous moments but the central figures, Osaka and Williams, have already moved on.

"Honestly, I'm not that mad at this," said Osaka. "Of course, I can look at this and be very disappointed and mad, but I feel like -- like, I'm not mad at it.

"Of course, I would like to reach higher, like, rounds.

"Hopefully I'll do well in Japan because I always do well in Japan, and just keep building off of it to end the season."

Lesson learned, Naomi Osaka moves on after US Open loss

Defending champion Naomi Osaka brought American teen Coco Gauff's captivating US&nbsp;Open run to a swift end with a 6-3, 6-0 win on Saturday to secure her spot in the fourth round.

World number one Osaka, who backed up last year's New York triumph with a win at the Australian Open but has since had an up-and-down season, simply overwhelmed her 15-year-old opponent in the marquee matchup under the Arthur Ashe Stadium lights.

"For me, I think this was the most focused I've been since Australia," Osaka said in an on-court interview, with Gauff standing beside her. "So, sorry for playing you with this type of mentality."

Gauff, who stunned the tennis world by reaching the fourth round at Wimbledon, committed seven double faults and was error-prone throughout the match.

Osaka set the tone early in the most hyped match of the tournament so far as the 21-year-old Japanese consolidated an early break for a 3-0 lead.

Gauff, in only her sixth Grand Slam match, then fired back-to-back aces to finally get on the board and from there the two exchanged breaks over the next four games before Osaka recovered from 0-30 to serve out the set.

Gauff, still unable to find any rhythm on her serve, made a pair of double faults en route to gifting Osaka a break to open the second set before the Japanese rallied back from 0-40 to consolidate for a 2-0 lead and then raced home from there.

At the end of the 65-minute match, Osaka approached an emotional Gauff at the side of the court, where the two embraced and spoke for a few minutes.

"She told me that I did amazing and good luck and then she asked if I could do the on-court interview with her and I said no because I knew I would cry the whole time but she encouraged me to do it," said Gauff.

"It was amazing. She did amazing and I am going to learn a lot from this match."

Up next for Osaka will be Swiss 13th seed Belinda Bencic, who beat Estonian Anett Kontaveit earlier on Saturday.

US Open 2019: Holder Naomi Osaka beats Coco Gauff to enter fourth round

Serena Williams is usually playing in the matches that thrill her most, but she's going to join a host of fans in watching Saturday's US Open third round showdown between teen sensation Coco Gauff and top-ranked defending champion Naomi Osaka.

The blockbuster night matchup at Arthur Ashe Stadium pits 15-year-old American Gauff, who made a fourth-round Wimbledon run in her Grand Slam debut, against 21-year-old Japanese star Osaka, the reigning US and Australian Open champion.

"I definitely think it's the future of women's tennis," Williams said.

"And I'm really excited to just be a fangirl and kind of watch."&nbsp;

Williams, the 37-year-old American chasing a 24th Grand Slam title to match Margaret Court's all-time record, sees them as the hottest young talents in the game.

"It will be a really interesting match. I think it's super exciting tennis," she said.

"Coco is much younger than Naomi if you could say that, because Naomi is incredibly young."&nbsp;

Even world number one and defending men's champion Novak Djokovic can't wait to see what Gauff and Osaka do.

"Coco is definitely a new superstar of tennis. It's great to see her fighting spirit, her intensity," Djokovic said.

"She's only 15. She brings so much maturity in her game for such a young age. It's very impressive.

"Definitely a fan of her and fan of Naomi, as well, what she has done in the last couple of years. It's going to be really interesting because they're both very likeable players and girls. They have a lot of fans. It's going to be definitely a great match."&nbsp;

Gauff, the youngest player in the US Open third round since Russia's Anna Kournikova in 1996, prepared to face Osaka by joining partner Caty McNally for a first-round doubles victory Friday.

'Sky is the limit'

Gauff teamed up with 17-year-old compatriot McNally to beat Germany's Julia Goerges and Czech Katerina Siniakova 7-6 (8/6), 6-2 and said the doubles helped prepare her for Osaka.

"I think it helped me a lot to practice several serves," she said.

"You have to hit a lot of different shots in doubles. I think it will come in handy tomorrow."&nbsp;

Gauff and McNally won last year's US Open junior girls doubles title and united for their first WTA doubles crown earlier this month at Washington.

"I dream of winning singles and doubles Grand Slam titles," Gauff said. She's hoping to make a dream come true this week.

"We've had good chemistry since the first match," said McNally, a second-round singles loser to Williams.

"The sky is the limit for us," Gauff says being teens help their on-court bond.

"We're both young and still learning," Gauff said.

"We can relate to each other on and off the court and our communication is really good." A huge crowd watched the match on an outer court, Gauff having become a fan favourite quickly.

"Both of us were really feeding on the crowd," Gauff said.

Such support doesn't surprise Williams.

"She's just incredibly talented. Anyone that's 15 playing like that, people are going to be drawn to them," Williams said.

"I think that's pretty awesome. I think she's really pretty cool. I love her excitement on the court. I'm a big fan of hers.

"And I'm really excited to just be a fangirl and kind of watch." Williams, the 37-year-old American chasing a 24th Grand Slam title to match Margaret Court's all-time record, sees them as the hottest young talents in the game. "It will be a really interesting match. I think it's super exciting tennis," she said. "Coco is much younger than Naomi if you could say that, because Naomi is incredibly young." Even world number one and defending men's champion Novak Djokovic can't wait to see what Gauff and Osaka do. "Coco is definitely a new superstar of tennis. It's great to see her fighting spirit, her intensity," Djokovic said. "She's only 15. She brings so much maturity in her game for such a young age. It's very impressive. "Definitely a fan of her and fan of Naomi, as well, what she has done in the last couple of years. It's going to be really interesting because they're both very likeable players and girls. They have a lot of fans. It's going to be definitely a great match." Gauff, the youngest player in the US Open third round since Russia's Anna Kournikova in 1996, prepared to face Osaka by joining partner Caty McNally for a first-round doubles victory Friday. 'Sky is the limit' Gauff teamed up with 17-year-old compatriot McNally to beat Germany's Julia Goerges and Czech Katerina Siniakova 7-6 (8/6), 6-2 and said the doubles helped prepare her for Osaka. "I think it helped me a lot to practice several serves," she said. "You have to hit a lot of different shots in doubles. I think it will come in handy tomorrow." Gauff and McNally won last year's US Open junior girls doubles title and united for their first WTA doubles crown earlier this month at Washington.

Serena Williams excited for Coco-Osaka - 'future of women's tennis'

Crowd-pleaser Coco Gauff came through a tough battle with qualifier Timea Babos 6-2, 4-6, 6-4 on Thursday to set up a third-round clash at the US&nbsp;Open against top seed and defending champion Naomi Osaka.

The 15-year-old American phenom was forced to dig deep to become the youngest player since Anna Kournikova in 1996 to reach the third round of the women's singles at Flushing Meadows.

"I was tested a lot. I think we both were just testing each other," Gauff said. "It’s just that type of match where anyone could have won."

Gauff rode into this year's tournament with enormous expectations after a dream run at Wimbledon where she beat five-times champion Venus Williams on her way to the fourth round.

On Thursday, the two players were evenly matched for most of the contest, with Gauff maintaining a slightly tighter performance and committing 34 unforced errors compared to 42 from Hungarian Babos.

It was another comeback for Gauff, who worked her way back from a one-set deficit in her first-round match, and the young upstart showed off her fighting instincts after failing to fend off a critical breakpoint late in the second set.

"I thought that the first set, I definitely was in control. In the second set, she raised her level and I wasn't able to finish the set," Gauff said.

A fired up Gauff prevailed after a 12-stroke rally late in the third set to set up a breakpoint opportunity, pumping her fists wildly and shouting in the excitement in front of a packed crowd that was firmly on her side.

"I couldn’t even see any empty seats!" Gauff said of the crowd, which included retired NBA star Kobe Bryant.

"I don’t even know how to really thank you guys. I’m super honoured to be American and play in New York City."

Gauff will face off against 21-year-old Osaka, who also holds the Australian Open title, in the third round of the tournament on Saturday in a clash that may provide a glimpse at the future of the women's game.

"Obviously she's an amazing player," said Gauff. "She's defending champion. She's won two slams. She's number one. She's only 21.

"We're both pretty young. But I'm a little bit newer to the game. So I'm just curious to see how my game matches up against her."

Injured Naomi Osaka maintains top spot

World number one Naomi Osaka will "probably" defend her US&nbsp;Open title, even if it means defying her doctor's orders, she said after retiring from the Cincinnati Masters with a knee injury on Friday.

Osaka was trailing American Sofia Kenin in the third set of their quarter-final in Cincinnati when she sought treatment on her heavily-strapped left knee.

After briefly returning to play, the Japanese star retired with Kenin leading 6-4, 1-6, 2-0.

Osaka's withdrawal comes after Serena Williams, the woman she beat in a tumultuous final at Flushing Meadows last year, pulled out of Cincinnati with back problems.

The injury has also loosened Osaka's grip on the top ranking, with world number two Ash Barty poised to reclaim it if the Australian makes the final.

"I really don't know what's going on with my leg right now," Osaka told reporters.

"It sucks, especially since I didn't want to get injured this close to the Open, and now I'm kind of worried a little bit.

"The thing is, my pain tolerance is really high, so that's usually why I play through things that apparently I shouldn't."

Osaka said she "felt it wasn't safe" to continue against Kenin ahead of the US&nbsp;Open starting Monday week.

"I feel like this might have that one per cent chance of me not being able to play, and that's what's concerning me.

"In the end, I'm going to play even if the doctor says no, probably."

Osaka's retirement sent Kenin through to face fellow American Madison Keys in Saturday's semi-final.

Keys faced only two break points in beating Venus Williams 6-2, 6-3 in the evening encounter.

Barty will face Russian veteran Svetlana Kuznetsova in the other semi-final after rallying to a 5-7, 6-2, 6-0 victory over Greek Maria Sakkari.

The Australian had surged to a 4-1 lead in the first set before she stumbled with unforced errors, with Sakkari lifting to take control through a slew of backhand winners.

Barty cleaned up her game in the second set, however, recovering the backhand slice that had deserted her in the opener.

"It was important for me at the start of the second set to go back to basics and what worked before," the 23-year-old Barty said.

"I had to serve well, and not give her too many looks at second serves. I tried to bring in my slice to change the tempo of the match."

Kuznetsova outlasted Czech third seed Karolina Pliskova 3-6, 7-6(2), 6-3, having been a set down with her opponent serving for the match.

Naomi Osaka, Serena Williams to compete at US Open

<a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/serena-williams-survives-riske-business-to-reach-wimbledon-semis-234457">Serena Williams</a> revealed Tuesday that she consulted a therapist after her infamous 2018 US Open final meltdown in which her bitter war of words with the umpire overshadowed Naomi Osaka's maiden Grand Slam victory.

The American superstar was widely vilified for her New York outburst in which she branded the chair umpire a "liar" and "thief".

She was handed a code violation for coaching,docked a point for smashing her racquet and penalised a game for verbal abuse.

"I couldn't find peace. I started seeing a therapist," Williams wrote in a first-person account published in US glossy magazine Harper's Bazaar.

"I was searching for answers, and although I felt like I was making progress, I still wasn't ready to pick up a racquet."

Williams's essay appeared online and on her own Instagram account in the middle of her Wimbledon quarter-final defeat of Alison Riske on Tuesday.

In it, she says she has apologised to Osaka, the breakout Japanese star who won the US Open final in straight sets.

"I am so proud of you and I am truly sorry. I thought I was doing the right thing in sticking up for myself. But I had no idea the media would pit us against each other," said the 37-year-old Williams.

"I would love the chance to live that moment over again. I am, was, and will always be happy for you and supportive of you.&nbsp;

"I would never, ever want the light to shine away from another female, specifically another black female athlete."

Williams said that Osaka, who went on to take the Australian Open title and the world number one spot, had accepted her apology.

Osaka's reply, she insisted, had even moved her to tears.

Despite her apology, Williams still insists she was a victim of sexism at Flushing Meadows.

"Why is it that when women get passionate, they're labeled emotional, crazy, and irrational, but when men do they're seen as passionate and strong?

"So often, in situations similar to mine, when men fight back against the referees, they're met with a smile or even a laugh from the umpire, as if they're sharing an inside joke.&nbsp;

"I'm not asking to avoid being penalized. I am asking to be treated the same way as everyone else. Sadly, that's simply not the world we currently live in."

After partnering Andy Murray in the mixed doubles on Tuesday, the American said it had been a tough decision to seek counselling.

"It wasn't very easy. I've had a lot of things happen to me at that particular tournament in general," she explained.

"It was just important to always try to better yourself in any way that you can."

Serena Williams revealed Tuesday that she consulted a therapist after her infamous 2018 US Open final meltdown in which her bitter war of words with the umpire overshadowed Naomi Osaka's maiden Grand Slam victory. "I was searching for answers, and although I felt like I was making progress, I still wasn't ready to pick up a racquet." Williams's essay appeared online and on her own Instagram account in the middle of her Wimbledon quarter-final defeat of Alison Riske on Tuesday. "I would love the chance to live that moment over again. I am, was, and will always be happy for you and supportive of you. "I would never, ever want the light to shine away from another female, specifically another black female athlete." From Naomi Osaka to Maria Sharapova, shocking upsets at Wimbledon'19 round one

If being world number one brings the burden of pressure and expectation then somebody should tell Ash Barty, who began her first Grand Slam at the summit of the women's game at Wimbledon on Tuesday and loved every minute of it.

Being at the top of the women's rankings has become something of a poisoned chalice in recent years, with the position changing hands 10 times since the start of 2017 between eight different occupants.

The most recent holder before <a href="https://www.google.com/url?client=internal-uds-cse&amp;cx=006054055338965708568:09spwrlibei&amp;q=https://www.wionews.com/photos/from-cricketer-to-grand-slam-winner-ashleigh-bartys-journey-is-inspiring-225626&amp;sa=U&amp;ved=2ahUKEwjc0JeYmpjjAhWIvI8KHRC5AJ4QFjABegQIEBAB&amp;usg=AOvVaw39bQuMwziWa8n3UfQXoq7O">Barty</a>, Naomi Osaka, admitted the pressure of being number one had caused headaches and fatigue while the stress was "way more" than she could have imagined.

The extent to which her game had plummeted from the heights of her two Grand Slam title successes at the US&nbsp;and Australian Opens was laid bare when she exited Wimbledon meekly in the first round on Monday.

It was refreshing, therefore, to hear Barty embrace the so-called "burden" of being the world's best player with such enthusiasm as she waltzed into the second round at the All England Club with a 6-4, 6-2 win over China's Zheng Saisai.

"I think for me it's a little bit irrelevant," she said about being number one.

"The only pressure I have is what I put on myself, making sure I'm doing all the right things, preparing in the right way. Ultimately when we play our matches, we go out there and enjoy it ... just play each match as it comes. There's certainly no extra stresses on any match," Barty said.

Her express-train run to the top of the women's game certainly showed no sign of slowing on Court One as Zheng was dispatched comfortably.

The Australian, who followed up her <a href="https://www.google.com/url?client=internal-uds-cse&amp;cx=006054055338965708568:09spwrlibei&amp;q=https://www.wionews.com/sports/ashleigh-barty-defeats-marketa-vondrousova-to-win-french-open-title-225535&amp;sa=U&amp;ved=2ahUKEwjc0JeYmpjjAhWIvI8KHRC5AJ4QFjAFegQIBhAC&amp;usg=AOvVaw0X8OBVGmF72q-p4HHjbnqX">French Open</a> triumph last month by winning in Birmingham, sealed a 13th straight win in a brisk hour and 16 minutes, battling through the first set before easing through the second.

Barty has never been past the third round at Wimbledon, but her game is well-suited to the slick grass courts and she looks well-placed to challenge for a second Grand Slam title.

The 23-year-old will certainly have to overcome tougher challenges than the 43rd-ranked Zheng if she is to lift the trophy next Saturday.

She could face defending champion <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/wimbledon-defending-champion-angelique-kerber-outclasses-tricky-compatriot-232606">Angelique Kerber</a> or seven-times winner Serena Williams in the quarter-finals while twice champion Petra Kvitova is a potential obstacle in the semi-final.

Zheng, however, was no match for the Australian who started the 2017 season ranked 271 in singles and whose remarkable career has also included a successful sabbatical playing cricket for Brisbane Heat in the Big Bash League.

Barty and Zheng had played each other three times previously, with Barty winning on each occasion and, apart from a brief wobble in the first set when she allowed the Chinese to claw back from 3-0 down to 3-3, it was plain sailing.

She broke early in the second set and again in the eighth game to wrap up victory, volleying the winner before saluting a warmly appreciative crowd.

Wimbledon: Ashleigh Barty embraces number one tag, cruises into second round

American 15-year-old Cori Gauff stole the show on the opening day of Wimbledon with a debut victory over five-time champion and her inspiration Venus Williams.

Gauff, the youngest woman ever to survive the qualifying tournament, played like a seasoned performer as she clinically beat the 39-year-old great 6-4, 6-4 to earn a standing ovation from an enchanted Court One crowd.

"I wouldn't say I didn't expect to win the match. I knew that I was going to go out there and play the way I play," Gauff, who claimed victory on her fourth match point, told reporters.

"I wasn't surprised that I won. I mean, I was just overwhelmed at the end," Gauff said.

Her victory put everything else in the shade on an opening day full of shocks in both draws.

World number two and second seed <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/second-seed-naomi-osaka-crashes-out-in-first-round-of-wimbledon-232123">Naomi Osaka</a> lost 7-6(4), 6-2 to dangerous Kazakh Yulia Putintseva who had also got the better of her in their recent match in Birmingham - a defeat that effectively cost Osaka the number one ranking.

US&nbsp;Open and Australian Open champion Osaka appeared close to tears when she spoke to the media later.

"Can I leave? I feel like I'm about to cry," the Japanese 21-year-old said.

French Open runner-up Marketa Vondrousova, the 16th seed, also bowed out but former world number ones Karolina Pliskova, Caroline Wozniacki, Simona Halep and Victoria Azarenka all made it safely through to the second round.

DJOKOVIC UNTROUBLED

Men's defending champion <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/wimbledon-novak-djokovic-sweeps-through-under-keen-gaze-of-ivanisevic-232118">Novak Djokovic</a> was untroubled as he began his quest for a fifth Wimbledon crown that would take him level on the all-time list with Swedish great Bjorn Borg.

The Serb, with former champion Goran Ivanisevic in his box, beat Germany's Philipp Kohlschreiber 6-3, 7-5, 6-3.

It was a bad day for two of the young guns expected to lead the new generation into a brave new era, however.

Sixth seed Alexander Zverev lost 4-6, 6-3, 6-2, 7-5 to Czech Jiri Vesely while Greek 20-year-old Stefanos Tsitsipas went down in five sets to Italian journeyman Thomas Fabbiano.

Tsitsipas, in particular, was highly-fancied to have a long run at the All England Club having reached the Australian Open semi-final this year but lost 6-4, 3-6, 6-4, 6-7(8), 6-3.

"He was just better than me today. I think the way I played, it should have been in three, not five. I don't know how I got to five. I guess with my fighting spirit, somehow I managed to win those two sets," he said.

Croatia's 40-year-old Ivo Karlovic, one of 47 men aged 30 or over in the men's singles, became the oldest man to play a first-round match in the Wimbledon singles since Ken Rosewall in 1975.

The giant Croat served 20 aces as he beat Andrea Arnaboldi in straight sets and will meet Fabbiano next.

Last year's runner-up Kevin Anderson cruised through in straight sets against Pierre-Hugues Herbert.

Eight-time champion Roger Federer and women's defending champion Angelique Kerber, as well as 23-time Grand Slam champion Serena Williams, start their campaigns on Tuesday.
