The discovery of the documents was first reported by CNN on January 25 after two letters written by Greg Jacob, Pence’s legal counsel to the National Archives were procured by the US media. This comes as incumbent President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump are under investigation by the Department of Justice (DOJ) for retaining classified documents from their time in office.&nbsp;

“We acted above politics and put national interests first,” said Pence in Florida on Friday and hoped that people would acknowledge that he swiftly acted to correct the error. The former vice president also noted that national security depends on the proper handling of classified documents. Notably, Pence had previously said that he did not retain any classified documents or information from his time in office.

In a letter dated January 18, the former VP’s lawyer wrote that the records “appear to be a small number of documents bearing classified markings that were inadvertently boxed and transported to the personal home of the former vice president at the end of the last administration”. While there is no clarity on what the documents are related to or the sensitivity of the information they carry, as per CNN, Pence’s team notified leaders in Congress and relevant committees of the discovery on Tuesday (January 24).&nbsp;

In a letter dated January 18, the former VP’s lawyer wrote that the records “appear to be a small number of documents bearing classified markings that were inadvertently boxed and transported to the personal home of the former vice president at the end of the last administration”.&nbsp;

Pence “was unaware of the existence of sensitive or classified documents at his personal residence” and “understands the high importance of protecting sensitive and classified information and stands ready and willing to cooperate fully with the National Archives and any appropriate inquiry,” said Jacob in the letter, copies of which were procured by the US media outlets.

Jacob also told the National Archives that the search of the former VP’s Indiana residence was called for by him following the discovery of classified documents at <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/us-president-biden-classified-documents-case-what-we-know-so-far-553247">Biden’s</a>&nbsp;Wilmington residence&nbsp;“out of an abundance of caution.”&nbsp;

The search took place on Monday after Pence had engaged outside counsel who had experience in handling classified documents, to review the documents stored in his personal home, said the lawyer. Subsequently, they “identified a small number of documents that could potentially contain sensitive or classified information”.&nbsp;

He also claimed that the former vice president immediately secured the documents “in a locked safe pending further direction on proper handling from the National Archives.” A follow-up letter from Jacobs dated January 22, said they handed the documents to the FBI agents from their field office in Indianapolis who visited Pence’s residence to collect late Thursday (January 19). At the time, the former VP was in Washington DC to attend the March for Life.&nbsp;

A total of four boxes containing copies of administration papers were found at Pence’s home, out of which two had a “small number of papers appearing to bear classified markings” while the other two contained “courtesy copies of vice presidential papers,” said Jacob.&nbsp;

On Monday (January 23), Pence’s legal team drove the boxes of documents back to Washington and handed them over to the National Archives to review the rest of the material for compliance with the Presidential Records Act (PRA). Notably, Pence had previously said that he did not retain any classified documents or information from his time in office.&nbsp;

Additionally, in another interview in 2022, in the context of classified documents found at former president Trump’s Florida residence and the issuance of a search warrant to the FBI when asked if he had taken classified documents from the White House, Pence told ABC News, “I did not…Well, there’d be no reason to have classified documents, particularly if they were in an unprotected area.”

The special counsel will define whether the former US president will face any charges.&nbsp;

Former Vice President Mike Pence, during a speech at&nbsp;Georgetown University in Washington, talked about Donald Trump, among various other things. When asked whether he would support Trump in the 2024 elections, he said, "There might be somebody else I prefer more."

Aides to Pence had told the congressional committee investigating the January &nbsp;6, 2021, Capitol attack that former President Donald Trump pressured Pence to overturn his 2020 election defeat despite being told repeatedly it was illegal to do so.&nbsp;

He also faced an embarrassing situation when some students walked out after he talked about the growing intolerance for opposing views in US politic and how people are not willing to listen to those with a different point of view.

Pence spoke about how politicians are faced with difficult challenges, saying that you can not always make the easy choice, but as an American politicians you must uphold the constitution.

Some students got up and walked out as a sign of protest, while one student waved the LGBTQ flag.&nbsp;

"It seems to me that having served many years in Washington, leaders in the nation’s capital have never been more out of touch or more intent on imposing their agenda or walking out on people that might have a different point of view,” Pence said.

He added&nbsp;"She had long since checked out and was, in my opinion, only trying to be respectful to Bill Barr and his position as Attorney General (he sucked!)."

It comes after Trump's daughter and Barr testified in a congressional hearing into the attack on the US Capitol by supporters of her father.

Trump has repeatedly targetted Pence for overseeing the congressional certification of Democrat Joe Biden's election win.

Witnesses testify Trump approved 'hang Mike Pence' slogans by US Capitol Hill Rioters

The Trump administration left office without providing the State Department with an accounting of the gifts former President Donald Trump, former Vice President Mike Pence and other White House officials received from foreign governments in 2020, the department disclosed late Friday.

The department said that as a result, it could not fully account for the gifts officials received, the latest example to emerge in recent months of how the Trump administration’s flouting of laws and norms about the day-to-day operations of government now makes it harder to determine whether anything improper took place.

“It’s flagrant and it looks terrible,” said Richard W. Painter, the former top ethics lawyer for George W. Bush’s administration. “Either it was really stupid or really corrupt.”

Under federal law, each government department and agency is legally required to submit a list to the State Department of gifts over $415 its officials received from foreign governments. The measure is intended to ensure that foreign governments do not gain undue influence over American officials.

Departing White Houses typically provide the State Department with a list of the gifts officials receive before, or shortly after, they leave office to ensure they have followed the law.

But in the list of gifts for 2020 that the State Department released Friday, there are no gifts for any White House officials. Although the pandemic curtailed some of Trump’s travel, Trump went to Switzerland and India — where he received gifts, including a bust of Gandhi, a sculpture of Gandhi’s famous “three monkeys” metaphor and a spinning wheel. Top foreign leaders for at least a dozen countries visited the White House.

In a highly unusual disclosure, the department said that its Office of the Chief of Protocol, which was run by a Trump appointee until Jan. 20, 2021, had failed before Trump left office to ask the White House for a list of the gifts it received, and that Trump’s White House left office without providing one.

The department said it had tried to collect the information about the gifts Trump White House officials had received but had failed to come up with an accounting.

“As a result, the data required to fully compile a complete listing for 2020 is unavailable,” the State Department said in a footnote to its list of gifts government officials received that year.

A spokesman for Trump did not respond to an email seeking comment.

In February, it was revealed that classified documents and gifts from the White House had been improperly taken to Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida, a matter federal authorities are now in the preliminary stages of investigating. Around that time, the House committee investigating the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol learned that significant chunks of time were missing from White House call records from the day of the attack.

The ethics expert, Painter, said that by failing to disclose the gifts, the Trump White House violated the foreign emoluments clause of the Constitution, which makes it illegal to take gifts from foreigners without permission from Congress. But Painter said that because the emoluments clause is toothless and has no criminal or civil penalties, it is extremely difficult to hold a former official accountable.

Even before the latest disclosure, the Trump administration had a history of sloppy record keeping and poor oversight of gifts given to and received by administration officials from foreign leaders.

The State Department’s inspector general reported in November that tens of thousands of dollars in gifts given to Trump administration officials were missing. They included a 30-year-old Suntory Hibiki bottle of Japanese whisky given to Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, worth $5,800, and a 22-karat gold commemorative coin valued at $560 given to another State Department official.

The inspector general also found that monogrammed commemorative pewter trays, marble trinket boxes and leather portfolios made with department funds to give to foreign leaders at the Group of 7 summit in 2020 that was canceled because of the pandemic were missing.

The New York Times reported in October that Trump administration officials had held onto white tiger and cheetah furs the Saudi government had given to the White House on a 2017 trip to the kingdom, even though the Endangered Species Act made possession of them illegal. When the furs were ultimately handed over to Interior Department, tests revealed that they were fake.

The Times also reported that government officials had questions about whether Pence’s wife, Karen Pence, wrongly took two gold-toned place card holders from the prime minister of Singapore without paying for them. The Trump administration, the Times reported, also failed to disclose that Jared Kushner, Trump’s son-in-law, had been given two swords and a dagger from the Saudis. A month after Trump left office, Kushner paid $47,920 for them along with three other gifts.

In a sharp rebuke to his former boss, former US Vice President Mike Pence said that Donald Trump was wrong for praising Russian President Vladimir Putin.

He said that “there is no room in this party for apologists for Putin” as he further cemented his break from Trump.

During an interview on a right-wing radio programme, The Clay Travis &amp; Buck Sexton Show, Trump had called Putin a "genius" to "declare a large portion of Ukraine as independent."

Pence said Trump was incorrect to think Pence could have taken action to reverse the outcome of the 2020 presidential election that Trump has falsely claimed was stolen from him.

"President Trump is wrong," Pence said in a speech in Florida to the conservative Federalist Society. "I had no right to overturn the election."

"The presidency belongs to the American people, and the American people alone. And frankly there is no idea more un-American than the notion that any one person could choose the American president," Pence added.

Eastman is alleged to have written a memo advising Trump that his vice president Mike Pence has the authority to reject the election results in certain states and thereby deny Biden's victory.

On January 2, he also reportedly spoke to around 300 state lawmakers about fixing "this egregious conduct" and ensuring that "we're not putting in the White House some guy that didn't get elected."

"Your documents and testimony are directly relevant to the select committee's investigation, as you appear to have been instrumental in advising President Trump that Vice President Pence could determine which electors were recognized on January 6, a view that many of those who attacked the Capitol apparently also shared," the committee told Eastman in its subpoena.&nbsp;

During the days leading up to the attack, Eastman is reported to have attended a January 5 "war room" meeting at the Willard and spoken at a rally near the White House.&nbsp;

He reportedly emailed Pence's lawyer during the siege, saying that it had taken place "because YOU and your boss did not do what was necessary to allow this to be aired in a public way."

The other subpoenas target mostly Trump's reelection campaign staff, officials or aides.&nbsp;

They include former NYPD chief Bernard Kerik and former campaign advisor Jason Miller, who were both reportedly present at the "war room" on January 5.
