Pakistan opposition parties held massive rally against the govt in Karachi

Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan on Saturday lashed out at three-time former premier Nawaz Sharif for accusing the army chief of rigging elections and installing a "puppet government" in Islamabad.

Sharif, the 70-year-old leader of the Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz) who was ousted from power in 2017 by the apex court on graft charges, on Friday for the first time directly named Army chief Gen Qamar Javed Bajwa and ISI head Lt Gen Faiz Hameed for interfering in the elections of 2018 to ensure victory of Imran Khan.

Hitting back at Sharif, Khan said on Saturday that the PML-N supremo came to politics by "polishing General Zia's shoes" — a reference to Sharif joining politics in 1980s during the martial law of then military dictator General Zia-ul Haq.

Khan said Sharif opted to use negative language against the army leadership at a time when soldiers were sacrificing their lives for the nation.

<a href="https://www.wionews.com/south-asia/sharifs-security-ramped-up-in-london-335975">Also read:&nbsp;Sharif's security ramped up in London</a>

"Why are they sacrificing their lives? For us; for the country. And this jackal who ran with his tail between his legs used such language for the army chief and DG ISI," Khan said.

The powerful army, which has ruled Pakistan for more than half of its 70 plus years of existence, has hitherto wielded considerable power in the matters of security and foreign policy.

Khan said that Sharif took "crores" of rupees from Meeran Bank in late 1980s to fight elections against Benazir Bhutto of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP).

"This is the man who put (PPP co-chairperson Asif Ali) Zardari in jail twice. It was Zardari who instituted the Hudaibiya Paper Mills case against him (Sharif), not General Bajwa,"said Khan.

<a href="https://www.wionews.com/south-asia/pakistan-foils-attempt-to-smuggle-endangered-falcons-336041">Also read:&nbsp;Pakistan foils attempt to smuggle endangered falcons</a>

Commenting on the joint rally of the opposition parties, Khan termed it as a "circus".

He also targeted PPP Chairperson Bilawal Bhutto Zardari and Sharif's daughter Maryam Nawaz, saying the two "children" who have never worked for an hour in their life and lived by using the "ill-gotten gains of their fathers" were making speeches.

Khan said these leaders would even sell the country to protect their wealth that they amassed through illegal means.
On September 20, nearly a dozen opposition parties launched the PDM and announced a three-phased anti-government movement to oust the Imran Khan-led Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf (PTI) government.

Addressing the PDM rally in Gujranwala on Friday, Sharif said: "(Army chief) Gen Qamar Javed Bajwa ended my government. He rigged 2018 elections and imposed incapable Imran Khan on the nation. Gen. Bajwa is a direct culprit and he will have to give an answer to this."

"You can label me a traitor if you want, seize my properties, file false cases against me but I will continue to speak for my people," said Sharif, who is facing multiple corruption charges and is currently on bail.

This is not the first time that Sharif has gone after the military leadership. During the opposition's multi-party conference last month, he had bitterly criticised the army, saying there was "a state above the state in the country". However, he had refrained from naming anyone.

The PML-N leader, however, made it clear that he was not against the army but some individuals who violated the Constitution.

Since his anti-army rant, the federal government has banned the media to broadcast Sharif's speeches.

The Opposition parties are openly protesting against the military's interference in politics and elections for the first time in the recent history of the country.

Sharif has been living in London since November last year after he was allowed by the courts and the government to go there for a period of eight weeks for medical treatment. But he did not come back, while his lawyers told the court that he was still recovering.

The Islamabad High Court through newspaper advertisements has asked Sharif to appear before it by November 24 to avoid being declared a "proclaimed offender".

Senior PML-N leader met Army chief over future of Nawaz Sharif: Pakistan military

Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz vice president Maryam Nawaz on Wednesday said political decisions should be made in Parliament and not at the army headquarters.

The 46-year-old daughter of former premier Nawaz Sharif was responding to a question from a reporter about Army Chief Gen Qamar Bajwa and head of the ISI Lt Gen Faiz Hameed's meeting with key opposition figures at the army's General Headquarters (GHQ) in Rawalpindi last week.

The meeting was attended by about 15 opposition figures, including Sharif's younger brother Shehbaz Sharif and Pakistan Peoples Party Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari.

Sharif was sentenced to seven years in the Al-Azizia Steel Mills case in December 2018 and a two-judge bench was hearing his appeal on the conviction. He, along with his daughter Maryam and son-in-law Muhammad Safdar was earlier also convicted in the Avenfield properties case in July 2018.

Produce Nawaz Sharif on Sept 22: Top court official to Pakistan foreign secretary

Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz Vice President Maryam Nawaz and 300 workers of her party were booked on Friday under terrorism charges for allegedly attacking law enforcers and hooliganism.

Police included Section 7 of the Anti-Terrorism Act (ATA) 1997 in the FIR registered against the (PML-N) leaders and workers three weeks ago during their clash with police outside the office of national anti-graft body in Lahore where Maryam had come to appear in a land corruption case.

PML-N has protested inclusion of terrorism charges in the FIR, saying this has been done at the best of Prime Minister Imran Khan.

"Imran Khan gets unnerved seeing Maryam Nawaz active in politics. First the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) initiated a false land probe against Maryam at Imran's behest and now police booked her and other PML-N men under terrorism charges on the premier's order,? PML-N lawmaker Azma Bokhari told reporters in reaction to the police action.
Most of the PML-N leaders including Maryam's husband Capt (R) Safdar are on bail. Maryam however has yet to seek bail in this case.

Azma said the PML-N will challenge inclusion of terrorism charges in the court.

Violence had erupted outside the NAB office on August 11 in Lahore as heavy police contingents and workers of the PML-N confronted each other shortly after the arrival of Maryam there in a land acquisition case to record her statement.

Several PML-N workers, policemen and NAB officials had suffered injuries during the clash and 58 arrested who were later released on bail.

The PML-N had filed a complaint regarding registration of FIR against Prime Minister Imran Khan, NAB chairman Javed Iqbal, PM's adviser Shahzad Akbar and the Punjab government for -- making an attempt on the life of Maryam Nawaz -- by attacking on her car, but police refused to register it.

"Had I not been in a bullet-proof car there could have been a loss of life. There was an organised conspiracy behind calling me to the NAB office. They wanted to cause harm to me," Maryam had said.&nbsp;

Maryam Nawaz, 300 PML-N workers booked under terrorism charges for clash outside NAB office

PM Imran Khan promised "Naya Pakisan". The country observed National Minorities Day today. It's a country where the minority population has steadily shrunk and where all minorities face discrimination.

A report in 2014 called Pakistan one of the world's most dangerous countries for minorities. Six years later the story has not changed, if anything, it has become worse. It's not just religious minorities now, political minorities also face attacks.

A case in point being Maryam Nawaz, the daughter of former prime minister Nawaz Sharif. Maryam Nawaz was attacked today by the police. The police in Pakistan threw stones at the car of an opposition leader in Lahore.

There were clashes between the supporters of Maryam Nawaz and the police. The incident took place outside the office of Pakistan’s National Accountability Bureau(NAB).

Maryam Nawaz had gone there for a hearing in a corruption case after the clashes the hearing had to be postponed. The drama that played out in Lahore today is political in nature. Maryam Nawaz is the presumptive heir of her father’s party the Pakistan Muslim League(N) which is a party that was in power before Imran Khan became prime minister.&nbsp;

Former prime minister Nawaz Sharif and his daughter were convicted in a graft case. Sharif was released on bail last year and sent to London. However, his daughter is still in Pakistan fighting a legal and political battle. Now, Maryam Nawaz is being accused of grabbing 200 acres of government land. Another leader from her party Rana Sanaullah was arrested too. He was accused of carrying 15 kilograms of heroin.

Shehbaz Sharif, brother of Nawaz Sharif said the charges were fake, almost a year later the case has gone nowhere. Rana Sanaullah was released on bail a few months after his arrest. The opposition in Pakistan is a divided lot but there is one thread that binds them together - Imran Khan.

Last year, Maryam Nawaz faced a media ban. First, one of her press conferences was taken off air. Later, an interview met a similar fate. Former president Asif Ali Zardari was censored and jailed too. He was given bail in December last year. In April, the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan released a damning report. It said that under Imran Khan all critical voices were being muzzled. There is systematic suppression of political dissent.&nbsp;

The report said that the Pakistani government decided to "put a squeeze on independent and critical voices" with premier newspapers and TV channels like the Dawn newspaper and Geo news targeted in an effort to deny voices of opposition space in mainstream media.

Government advertising which is critical for the survival of these organisations was denied to those outlets that didn't toe the official line. Ultimately they had to shut down. It triggered massive layoffs as thousands of journalists found themselves out of a job.

Imran Khan accuses India of gross human rights violations but in his "Naya Pakistan", the Pakistani prime minister is waging a war on free speech denying minorities the right to life.

Maryam Nawaz attacked by police in Imran's 'Naya Pakistan'

The Pakistan government is pulling its heaviest punch against former prime minister Nawaz Sharif.

Imran Khan-led government has decided to move the UK authorities seeking deportation of former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, who is currently in London for medical treatment.

The decision comes a week after the Punjab government refused to extend bail to Nawaz Sharif, saying that there is no legal, moral or medical ground to let him stay any longer in London.

The government says, "Sharif is enjoying a lavish lifestyle in London while corruption cases and jail sentences await him in Pakistan."

Accusing the media of being part of the Sharif nexus is most shocking. The government did not like it that a section of the media took Sharif's side, saying, "A criminal or not, he must be allowed to seek treatment in London on humanitarian grounds."

But, accusing the media of being part of the sharif nexus is most shocking.&nbsp;

Imran khan's political animosity with Sharif is quickly turning into a witch hunt and mutual political appreciation has turned to personal detestation.

All things aside, Imran Khan today desperately wants to see Nawaz Sharif behind bars. The authorities are still raiding his properties in Pakistan with the most recent one being carried out two weeks ago.

Nawaz Sharif's problems started in 2016 after the Panama papers scandal. The leaked documents showed Sharif's family holding millions of dollars worth of property and companies in the UK and around the world.

In 2018, after a 15-month-long trial, Pakistan's Supreme Court barred Nawaz Sharif from holding public office for life. Later, an anti-corruption court sentenced him to 10 years in prison in the money laundering case.

After sharif's repeated requests, in October last year, the Islamabad court took cognizance of his medical condition and granted bail.&nbsp;Sharif left for London in November, 2019.

Now, the Tehreek e Insaf-led government wants him to return.&nbsp;

Government spokespersons have been freely using the word 'absconder', but the court is yet to declare Sharif an absconder. It allows Imran Khan to put Sharif in a spot, pointing a finger at his unwillingness to return as a sign of guilt.

Sharif's party, Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PMLN), has been accusing the Pakistan government ministers of playing politics over his health.

Nawaz Sharif has been Prime Minister of Pakistan three times and been removed from the office each time.&nbsp;

Sharif was most recently ousted as prime minister by Pakistan's Supreme Court in 2017, for being 'dishonest'&nbsp;by failing to report a monthly income of 10,000 Emirati dirhams ($2,723) from a company owned by his son.

Lahore High Court to hear Maryam Nawaz's petition on removal of name from ECL on January 15

The government has decided not to allow<a href="https://www.wionews.com/south-asia/maryam-nawaz-moves-high-court-over-removal-of-name-from-exit-control-list-266846"> Maryam Nawaz</a>, vice president of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz and daughter of former prime minister <a href="https://www.wionews.com/south-asia/nawaz-sharif-undergoes-check-up-at-london-bridge-hospital-264538">Nawaz Sharif</a>, to travel abroad and rejected her application.

"The rules concerning placement of the name of persons on Exit Control List [ECL] do not allow the government to entertain her application to remove her name from the no-fly list," said senior lawyer and aide to the prime minister Babar Awan while talking to Dawn on Sunday.

Headed by Law Minister Farogh Naseem, the subcommittee of the federal cabinet that deals with ECL cases rejected her plea, as she had sought the facility for flying to London to look after her ailing father who is currently undergoing medical treatment, Awan said.

"In fact, the subcommittee is part of the cabinet and a formal announcement to bar Maryam from traveling abroad will be made by the federal cabinet in its meeting [on Tuesday]," Awan said.

Referring to the Exit from Pakistan (Control) Rules, 2010, the Prime Minister's aide on legal affairs said that even if a person has valid travel documents to proceed to any destination outside Pakistan, the government could stop them from leaving the country for being involved in corruption and loss to government funds.

Earlier, Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Information Firdous Ashiq Awan after the December 18 meeting of the Pakistan Tehreek-e Insaf's core committee had also said that the government would not accept Maryam's request.

Meanwhile, the PML-N Information Secretary Marriyum Aurangzeb, in a statement issued on Sunday, said that the government's decision to bar the daughter of the ex-prime minister from traveling abroad did not surprise anyone, considering that the PTI regime had always been desperately looking for opportunities to victimise and persecute the PML-N leadership.

Aurangzeb said that the PML-N was aware of the "prejudice and vengeful mindset" of the government that was why she had also filed a request with the court to allow her to travel abroad.

Maryam, the daughter of former prime minister <a href="https://www.wionews.com/south-asia/nawaz-sharif-undergoes-check-up-at-london-bridge-hospital-264538">Nawaz Sharif</a>, filed the petition through Advocate Amjad Pervez, Express Tribune reported. The petition nominated the federal government, National Accountability Bureau (NAB) chairman, Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) director-general, passport and immigration director-general and others as respondents.

"I returned to Pakistan with my father (former prime minister Nawaz Sharif)&nbsp;despite being sentenced in the Al-Azizia reference," Maryam said in the petition.

She maintained that her name was placed on the ECL without her stance on the matter being heard.

"The memorandum issued on August 20, 2018, was illegal. I have been regularly appearing in the courts and therefore, I should be granted permission to travel abroad till a final verdict on the petition," Maryam added.

She further urged the LHC to declare the order of putting her name on the ECL as null and void and terming it illegal.

"I am under a lot of mental stress due to my father`s illness and he also needs me. I should be granted permission to travel abroad till a final verdict on the petition," the PML-N leader urged the court.

Pakistan: Maryam Nawaz moves high court for removal of name from Exit Control List

Former Pakistan PM Nawaz Sharif will leave abroad for treatment on Tuesday, Pakistan Muslim League- Nawaz (PML-N) said today.

PML-N spokesperson Marriyum Aurangzeb said an air ambulance will arrive on Tuesday morning for Nawaz's departure, reports Dawn.&nbsp;

The development comes a day after the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/south-asia/pakistan-lahore-hc-allows-nawaz-sharif-to-travel-abroad-for-treatment-without-conditions-262611">Lahore High Court </a>(LHC) removed Pakistan government's conditional permit to Nawaz. In a blow to Imran Khan government, the HC ordered to remove Nawaz's name from Exit Control List (ECL) without any conditions.

Earlier, the PTI government had given "<a href="https://www.wionews.com/south-asia/pml-n-rejects-pak-govts-one-time-permission-to-nawaz-sharif-to-travel-abroad-for-treatment-261938">one-time</a>" permission to Nawaz to go abroad for four weeks and asked the Sharif family to submit an indemnity bond worth over Rs 7.5 billion.

The spokesperson added that the doctors carried a detailed examination of Nawaz's health and made consultations in order to make Nawaz fit to travel.&nbsp;

Aurangzeb also said that high-dose of steroids are being given to former PM so that his platelet count can be brought to a level suitable for travel. He also said that medications are also given to Nawaz for lowering his blood sugar levels.

A few hours earlier, Nawaz's doctor, Adnan Khan tweeted that Nawaz will travel to London within 48 hours once he is "clinically stabilised, made travel-worthy &amp; is safe for air travel".&nbsp;

Earlier on Saturday, PML-N chief and Nawaz's brother Shehbaz Sharif hailed the verdict and added that he will accompany his brother to London. He also said that former PM's daughter Maryam Nawaz will stay in Pakistan.

Shehbaz also signed an undertaking which said that he would ensure that his brother returns to Pakistan "within four weeks or on certification by doctors that he has regained his health and is fit to return back". The PML-N chief said that initially they are travelling to London but can move abroad if the doctor advises them.&nbsp;

The former PM was suffering from a serious immune disorder and is advised to go abroad for medical treatment.&nbsp;

Nawaz is convicted in two corruption cases and is a suspect in one case. He was serving a seven-year sentence when he was admitted to a private hospital last month due to the deterioration of his health. He was later granted bail from high courts from two corruption cases on health grounds.&nbsp;

PML-N spokesperson Marriyum Aurangzeb said an air ambulance will arrive on Tuesday morning for Nawaz's departure, reports Dawn. The development comes a day after the Lahore High Court (LHC) removed Pakistan government's conditional permit to Nawaz. In a blow to Imran Khan government, the HC ordered to remove Nawaz's name from Exit Control List (ECL) without any conditions. Earlier, the PTI government had given "one-time" permission to Nawaz to go abroad for four weeks and asked the Sharif family to submit an indemnity bond worth over Rs 7.5 billion. The spokesperson added that the doctors carried a detailed examination of Nawaz's health and made consultations in order to make Nawaz fit to travel. Aurangzeb also said that high-dose of steroids are being given to former PM so that his platelet count can be brought to a level suitable for travel. He also said that medications are also given to Nawaz for lowering his blood sugar levels. A few hours earlier, Nawaz's doctor, Adnan Khan tweeted that Nawaz will travel to London within 48 hours once he is "clinically stabilised, made travel-worthy & is safe for air travel". Former PM #NawazSharif is scheduled to travel abroad, to London-UK, for medical treatment within 48 hours once he’s clinically stabilised, made travel-worthy & is safe for air travel. He will make the journey in a fully equipped & medically staffed Air Ambulance; arriving soon. — Dr. Adnan Khan (@Dr_Khan) November 17, 2019 × Earlier on Saturday, PML-N chief and Nawaz's brother Shehbaz Sharif hailed the verdict and added that he will accompany his brother to London. He also said that former PM's daughter Maryam Nawaz will stay in Pakistan. Shehbaz also signed an undertaking which said that he would ensure that his brother returns to Pakistan "within four weeks or on certification by doctors that he has regained his health and is fit to return back". The PML-N chief said that initially they are travelling to London but can move abroad if the doctor advises them. The former PM was suffering from a serious immune disorder and is advised to go abroad for medical treatment. Nawaz is convicted in two corruption cases and is a suspect in one case. He was serving a seven-year sentence when he was admitted to a private hospital last month due to the deterioration of his health. He was later granted bail from high courts from two corruption cases on health grounds.

Maryam Nawaz to appear before NAB in Chaudhry Sugar Mills case

Pakistan's main opposition parties held protest rallies in cities across the country on Thursday, accusing Prime Minister Imran Khan's government of ruining the economy and seeking to intimidate and silence its opponents.

The so-called "Black Day" protests, a year after Khan's PTI party swept to power following a bitterly contested election, come amid mounting economic problems for Pakistan and a political climate that has grown increasingly angry.

Surging prices of fuel and everyday staples, a plunging currency that has lost a quarter of its value since the election and allegations of media censorship and stifling opposition voices have fuelled the protests.

"Every day in the presence of Imran Khan is a black day," Maryam Nawaz, leader of the PML-N party that was ousted from power in last year's election told a crowd of thousands of supporters in a football stadium in the western city of Quetta.

She accused Khan of accepting "dictation" from US President Donald Trump during his visit to Washington and proposed a march on the capital Islamabad but did not name a date.

In Karachi, Pakistan's commercial capital, thousands of supporters of the PPP, Pakistan's other main opposition party, gathered to hear party leader Bilawal Bhutto, son of the murdered former prime minister Benazir Bhutto.

Banners reading "PTI brought price hikes, PTI brought joblessness, PTI brought economic terrorism" hung over the main stage. There were similar protests in other cities including Lahore and Peshawar.

Khan's government came to power with Pakistan already nearing a balance of payments crisis, and this month agreed a $6 billion bailout with the International Monetary Fund that came with tough austerity conditions including more taxes and an agreement to let the rupee currency fall sharply.

It has dismissed the opposition protests and blamed the economic turmoil on massive corruption and economic mismanagement by previous governments, accusing their leaders of shifting millions of dollars out of the country illegally.

PML-N founder and former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, Maryam Nawaz' father, is currently serving a 7-year sentence on corruption charges. His successor, Shahid Khaqan Abbasi, has also been arrested on corruption charges. He denies wrongdoing.

The arrests have fed the anger of opposition parties, who say the government has manipulated the justice system to crush its adversaries.

Earlier this month, PML-N officials produced video evidence they said showed the judge responsible for sentencing Nawaz Sharif had been blackmailed into convicting him. The judge, who said the PML-N had also attempted to blackmail him, has since been sacked from the court that decided the Nawaz case.

"Nawaz Sharif wants food from home in jail, he wants air conditioning in jail. But in a country where half the population has no air conditioning or TV, what kind of punishment would this be?," said Khan on July 21, while addressing Pakistani diaspora during his three-day visit to the United States.

"I am going to go back and make sure there is no air conditioning or TV for Nawaz Sharif who is a criminal. I know (PML-N leader) Maryam Bibi will make some noise, but I say to her, return the money. It`s as simple as that," he added.
