Arsenal suffered a reality check in their pursuit of the Premier League title on Saturday, losing 1-0 at struggling Everton in manager Sean Dyche's first game in charge, while Liverpool imploded in their third consecutive away defeat. James Tarkowski's second-half header sealed Everton's first victory since October, briefly moving them out of the relegation zone - although they ended the day back in it.

While there was joy on the blue side of Merseyside, Liverpool's miserable league campaign continued as they were crushed 3-0 at Wolverhampton Wanderers. Liverpool trailed 2-0 after only 12 minutes with Joel Matip's own goal and a debut effort for Craig Dawson. Ruben Neves added a third for the hosts after the break.

"When you start like this you don't deserve anything in a Premier League game," Liverpool manager Juergen Klopp said. "We have to change it immediately in the next game."

Meanwhile, Manchester United consolidated their top-four position with a 2-1 victory at home to Crystal Palace, although it came at a cost with midfielder Casemiro shown a straight red card. United edged above Newcastle United into third place with 42 points and Newcastle failed to reclaim the position later as they could only draw at home to West Ham United.

Arsenal gets a wake-up call

Arsenal's second league loss of the season left them on 50 points, five ahead of champions Manchester City who are at fifth-placed Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday. With no signings in the January window and Everton in a horrendous run of form, the omens were not good for Dyche as he began his rescue mission at Goodison Park against an Arsenal side whose only previous league defeat came in September.

But Everton took full advantage of a rare Arsenal off-day with Dwight McNeil's corner being powered home by Tarkowski -- two players who had worked under Dyche at Burnley.

"I've just said to them that it's a start point, that's all it is. We're laying down the fibre of what we want to be as a group but this is only a start point, no matter who you beat," Dyche said of Everton's first win in 11 in all competitions.

For Arsenal it was a wake-up call and they will be hoping for a favour from Tottenham, who play second-placed Manchester City on Sunday.

"From our side, we're disappointed because obviously we didn't get the result that we wanted, but the performance doesn't reflect what we've been doing," the Spaniard said.

Manchester United cruise ahead but Casemiro shown red card

Everything was going smoothly for Manchester United after Bruno Fernandes converted a penalty and then Marcus Rashford scored his 11th goal since the World Cup to make it 2-0 at Old Trafford. But Casemiro was dismissed in the 70th minute for grabbing Will Hughes around the neck during a melee caused by a foul on Anthony. Palace made it a nervy ending when Jeffrey Schlupp halved the deficit.

United saw out a 13th consecutive win at Old Trafford but they will now be without Casemiro for three games.

"I've seen the incident, where the Crystal Palace player takes a big risk to bring an injury to Antony and then the emotions got really high, for several players," Erik ten Hag said. "They (VAR) pick one player out."

Charges of rape and assault have been dropped under Manchester United footballer Mason Greenwood. The key witnesses withdrew their involvement from the probe. Manchester United will now conduct their own investigation.

Manchester United footballer Greenwood no longer under probe, rape charges dropped

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag toed a safe line, a day after rape and assault charges were dropped against academy graduate Mason Greenwood. The Dutch manager refused to comment on the issue and directed reporters toward the club's statement. "I can't add anything. I refer to the statement of the club," said the Dutch manager, in his first season at Old Trafford. "In this moment, I can't give comment about the process. I can't say anything about it, I refer to the statement of the club and at this moment I can't add anything." United released a statement after the news and took a circumspect view of things. "Manchester United notes the decision of the Crown Prosecution Service that all charges against Mason Greenwood have been dropped. The club will now conduct its own process before determining next steps. We will not make any further comment until that process is complete." Greenwood being freed of the charges does not mean that the assault or rape did not take place. The Crown Prosecution informed on Thursday that the key witnesses had withdrawn from the case which made the prosecution difficult. "Given the significant media coverage of this case, it is only fair that we share the news that the 21-year-old man, who had been arrested and charged in connection with an investigation opened in January 2022, no longer faces criminal proceedings in relation to this," said Michaela Kerr, Greater Manchester Police's head of Public Protection. Former Manchester United player turned pundit Roy Keane has praised the club for getting rid of four 'energy-sappers' that had a net negative impact on the team last season.

Former Manchester United player turned pundit Roy Keane has praised the club for getting rid of four 'energy-sappers' that had a net negative impact on the team last season. Speaking after United progressed to the Carabao Cup final, beating Nottingham Forest 5-0 on aggregate, Keane reflected that the mood in the United camp had changed with the introduction of new players and managers. “I’m not knocking all these players, Pogba, Mata, Matic, Jesse Lingard, lads who’d been around and knew they were leaving. They knew they’d be leaving and their contracts were up for most of them and I think that wasn’t helping," said Keane, naming the players. Read more: Gary Neville believes Arsenal will lose the Premier League race to Manchester City While Paul Pogba was shipped to Juventus, Juan Mata went to Galatasaray, Nemanja Matic to Roma and Jesse Lingard to Nottingham Forest, after somewhat disappointing campaigns with United. Keane reflected on the same and added, "Those who were fringe players, coming off the bench, and when they were coming on they weren’t bringing anything because they felt they should have been starting." “Those subs and fringe players have to come on and be ready, whereas the fringe players last year, you just felt they were energy-sappers." Read more: 'They were disappointing': Roy Keane on Arsenal after their FA Cup exit After manager Erik ten Hag took over United at the start of the 22-23 season, the team suffered crushing defeats against Brighton and Brentford. However, since then, the Dutch manager has turned around a corner as United are the only English team competing on all fronts at the moment. In order to compete, Ten Hag had to invest heavily in the summer transfer window. Players such as Antony, Casemiro, Lisandro Martinez, Christian Eriksen and Tyrell Malacia were brought to the club and the change has been visible. “There definitely feels around the club a new energy, the new manager has put a few markers down after a bad start to the season, and that momentum and that feel-good factor is back at the club. The energy levels are different," noted Keane. After Eriksen's injury ruled him out of the season, United acted smoothly before the end of the winter transfer window and bought Bayern Munich midfielder Marcel Sabitzer. It's barely been a month since Portuguese superstar Cristiano Ronaldo arrived at the Saudi Arabian club Al Nassr. While many believe that Al Nassr is the last pit stop in Ronaldo's storied career, his current coach Rudi Garcia believes otherwise. Speaking to reporters, the former AS Roma manager said, “Cristiano Ronaldo is a positive addition, as he helps to disperse defenders. He is one of the best players in the world." "He will not finish his career at Al-Nassr, he will return to Europe.” However, Garcia's claims contradict Ronaldo's statement that he made after signing up for Al Nassr. During his unveiling, Ronaldo said his work in Europe was done and that he came to Saudi Arabia, despite having several offers from European and American clubs. "I am so proud at making this big decision in my life and my career. My work in Europe is done. I played for all the most important clubs,” "Nobody knows but I can say now that I had many opportunities in Europe, many clubs in Brazil, in Australia, in the US even in Portugal, many clubs tried to sign me," said Ronaldo. Former Manchester United player turned pundit Roy Keane was not impressed by the performance of Arsenal, following their fourth-round FA Cup exit against Manchester City.

Former Manchester United player turned pundit Roy Keane was not impressed by the performance of Arsenal, following their fourth-round FA Cup exit against Manchester City. “I think Arsenal lost their shape for 10 or 15 minutes with the changes they made. But just before that, there was a lapse. They were having a breather at just the wrong time. There was poor communication from the centre halves to the midfielders," said Keane in a post-match show. “They switched off and that will be a big concern. I expected more from Arsenal tonight but they were disappointing.” Keane also commented on the changes clocked in by manager Mikel Arteta for the match. Keane believed that Arsenal's main goal was to win the Premier League as they looked unbothered about the FA Cup tie. "It was hard to gauge Arsenal tonight because of the team they put out. Looking at the starting line-up you could sense that this was not their priority. They want to get that Premier League title." He added that players, however, were going to be down for the next few days as they did not want to get beaten. "They'll recover and if they go on to win the league, they'll say they had to sacrifice this game, but when you make so many changes particularly defensively, you send the message that you're not that bothered, which is not a good message to send." Read more: Gary Neville believes Arsenal will lose the Premier League race to Manchester City The Gunners competed well in the first half, giving a couple of scares to the City defence. However, in the second half, City turned up the heat and managed to find the opening goal through a cheeky pass-cum-shot from Nathan Ake. While Arsenal have been dumped out of the Carabao Cup and FA Cup, they are gunning to win their first Premier League title in over two decades. They currently sit atop the points table with City five pits behind them. Both teams are yet to square off against each other in the league. Their first meeting will take place on February 16 and could very well decide the title race. City will be coming into the contest with the confidence of having bested the Gunners once already. 'I'm not Harry Potter': Erik ten Hag on Marcus Rashford's turnaround in form

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag was not a happy man after his side conceded in the 90th minute to go down against table-toppers Arsenal. The Dutch criticised his players and said they lacked the discipline required to secure all three points.

"Maybe in the next couple of hours we realise we are in a good position, realise we are in a good development, a good process, but at this moment I am annoyed," said Ten Hag in a post-match interview.

"I also told the players if you want to win trophies, titles, we have to change our mentality."

The former Ajax manager added that if his team continued to concede like that they would not be able to win trophies.

"Because it's not possible you are in a top game, you're making three such big mistakes where you concede goals. Especially the last goal, you have to feel the game on that point. A point was the maximum and then you have to take the point and you can't give such a goal away like we did on top level. Then you can't win trophies."

"I also told the players if you want to win trophies, titles, we have to change our mentality." The former Ajax manager added that if his team continued to concede like that they would not be able to win trophies. "Because it's not possible you are in a top game, you're making three such big mistakes where you concede goals. Especially the last goal, you have to feel the game on that point. A point was the maximum and then you have to take the point and you can't give such a goal away like we did on top level. Then you can't win trophies." 'Change your mentality': Erik ten Hag blasts Manchester United players after Arsenal defeat

Premier League leaders Arsenal have had their title credentials questioned all season but their last-gasp win against Manchester United has silenced many of the remaining doubters.

Eddie Nketiah scored the winner in the dying moments of a pulsating match at the Emirates on Sunday as the home fans were infused with fresh belief that this could be their year.

The game against in-form United was seen as a critical test for the Gunners, especially after Manchester City closed the gap at the top of the table to just two points earlier in the day.

It was a challenge they did not fluff, hitting back hard after conceding the first goal, scored by Marcus Rashford, and staying calm after Lisandro Martinez cancelled out Bukayo Saka's strike in the second half.

Arsenal, who have made their best-ever start to an English top-flight season, now have 50 points after 19 games, five clear of defending champions City with a game in hand at the halfway point of the campaign.

"I don't think it gets much better than that," said a buoyant Arsenal coach Mikel Arteta.

"It was a beautiful moment, a really special one because we were pushing and pushing and pushing and the goal wasn't coming and it came at the end... it was just electric. It was really emotional, really passionate and I lost it."

Arteta said he hopes the result, which follows last week's 2-0 win against Tottenham in the north London derby, gives his team the belief that Arsenal can be crowned league champions for the first time since 2004.

But he wants to keep his team's feet on the ground despite a remarkable season in which they have lost just once in the league.

"We know our reality, we know how much we still have to improve," said the Spaniard, who was previously Pep Guardiola's assistant at City.

Winnable matches

Arsenal face the defending champions in the middle of next month but their upcoming fixtures all look winnable and it is getting increasingly difficult to see where they will slip up.

Leaving the match against City aside, Arsenal's next opponents in the league are relegation-threatened Everton, Brentford, Aston Villa, Leicester, Bournemouth, Fulham, Crystal Palace and Leeds.

City, with title-winning pedigree, appear to have found their form again after a wobble and the sides at the bottom of the table will fight for their lives as the trap door looms.

But former Arsenal captain Arteta has transformed his side into title favourites, through luck and judgement.

Saka has gone from strength to strength while Nketiah has stepped up in the absence of new signing Gabriel Jesus, injured while playing for Brazil at the World Cup.

The 23-year-old now has six goals in six games in all competitions since the tournament in Qatar.

"What Eddie's doing is incredible," said Arteta. "We cannot say we saw that. We were hoping that he could do that because of the way he is, because of his mentality, because of his qualities."

When asked to sum up the first half of the season, Arteta said it was "extraordinary" but was again careful to avoid the impression that his team are the finished article.

"It doesn't get much better than that, that's the reality," he said. "I think we deserve the points that we have."

"We have played well enough to win most of the matches but the reality as well is that we still have a lot of things that we can get much better at."

So does he believe Arsenal are now favourites for the title, on course to win the Premier League for the first time since Arsene Wenger's last triumph nearly two decades ago?

"I don't have an opinion," he said. "It can be a perception. I know my team so well, I know where we are, I know why we are here and I know where we want to be."

"And we are still far from that and I know the level of the other teams, especially one that has won everything in the last five or six years and we are not there yet."

Premier League: Arsenal edge past Manchester United in a five-goal thriller

The craze for the forthcoming inaugural Women's IPL is at an all-time high. With the continuous rise of the women's cricket in India, the BCCI is set to host the first-ever Women's IPL in March, 2023. Ahead of the showpiece event, the Manchester United owners, who had tried their hand to acquire an Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise in 2021, confirmed their interest in the forthcoming women's tournament.

On the sidelines of the ongoing ILT20 in Dubai, where Man United owns the Desert Vipers team, a representative for the owners told Cricbuzz that the Avaram Glazer is looking at the WIPL.

"Having bought into the ILT20, it is natural for us to look into other cricket opportunities around the world, including Women's IPL," Phil Oliver, the CEO of Desert Vipers, told the cricket portal on Friday (January 13). As per reports, the BCCI is set to conduct the auction for the WIPL franchises later this month, on January 25. Meanwhile, the media rights auction will take place on January 16.

Oliver, however, didn't reveal if the club has bought the Invitation To Tender (ITT) document, which is a prerequisite for buying a side in WIPL. "I can't reveal the details of how far we are in that process but I am happy to say that we are looking into all opportunities, including the WIPL. The India market is of interest to us. A lot of Indian cricket fans will be watching this tournament and will see what the Desert Vipers will bring to that. If anything, we want to bring an exciting brand of cricket to the Indian fans, just as to our fans all around the world," Oliver asserted. It is to be noted the ITT will be up for purchase till January 21.

It is believed that Man United were keen to buy one of the two new IPL teams, i.e. the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) -- eventually bought by Sanjiv Goenka group -- and Gujarat Titans (now owned by CVC Capital Group) in late 2021. Nonetheless, Oliver was quick to point out that not Man United but Avaram Glazer, of Lancer Capital, had bid for an IPL team.

Hence, Oliver clarified, "Just to draw the initial distinction, it was not Manchester United which was looking at an IPL team. The distinction is important. Avaram Glazer of Lancer Capital bid for an IPL team when it expanded last year. That company has bought a franchise in ILT20, Desert Viper, and Manchester United is not represented here."

Carabao Cup: Rashford sizzles with a brace as Manchester United and Newcastle advance to semi-finals

Manchester United heaped the pressure on Everton boss Frank Lampard on Friday, overcoming a howler from goalkeeper David de Gea to win the FA Cup third-round tie 3-1.

Manchester United heaped the pressure on Everton boss Frank Lampard on Friday, overcoming a howler from goalkeeper David de Gea to win the FA Cup third-round tie 3-1. Everton travelled to Old Trafford in trepidation after slipping into the Premier League relegation zone this week following a chastening 4-1 home hammering at the hands of Brighton. But they made the worst possible start, with Brazil forward Antony scoring in just the fourth minute. They were level 10 minutes later after Conor Coady pounced on De Gea's embarrassing error but the Everton defender put the ball in his own net early in the second half to hand the initiative back to the home side. Marcus Rashford increased Manchester United's lead in the dying seconds, scoring from the penalty spot. United won the most recent of their 12 FA Cups in 2016 while Everton's win against United in the 1995 Wembley final was the last time they won a trophy. The Red Devils, hunting their first silverware since 2017 - are in fourth spot in the Premier League in Erik ten Hag's first season in charge and are through to the League Cup quarter-finals. The in-form team opened the scoring when the impressive Rashford surged down the left and into the penalty area before firing the ball across the box to the fast-arriving Antony. Moments later Anthony Martial flashed just wide and Everton appeared to be facing an arduous night. WATCH | Gravitas: The death of possession football? × De Gea error But Demarai Gray gave United a warning when he smashed a shot against the foot of the post from just outside the area and minutes later Everton were level in bizarre circumstances. Amadou Onana won the ball on the edge of the box and fed Neal Maupay, who steered the ball towards the near post. De Gea could have used his hands but the ball somehow squeezed through his legs as he clung to the post with one hand and Coady had the easiest of finishes. The mood of the match changed but United still looked dangerous on their forays forward, with Jordan Pickford denying Martial after a lightning counter-attack. Ten Hag urged the United fans to turn up the volume as he came out after half-time and they were quickly back in front, with Rashford once again playing a crucial role. Read more: Premier League: Manchester United breeze past Bournemouth to consolidate top four spot The England forward cut in from the left and drove into the Everton box, beating Seamus Coleman to send in a low ball which Coady turned into his own net. United continued to probe for openings as fans taunted Lampard with chants of "you're getting sacked in the morning", with Bruno Fernandes testing Everton goalkeeper Pickford from distance. Everton, showing an admirable fighting spirit, had the ball in the net through substitute Dominic Calvert-Lewin but the goal was ruled out for an offside by VAR earlier in the move. Rashford added gloss to the scoreline from the spot after Alejandro Garnacho was brought down. WATCH WION LIVE HERE:

FA Cup: Manchester United beat Everton 3-1 to progress into the fourth round

Manchester United should turn their attention to knockout play after securing three straight victories in the second half of the Premier League. The third round of the FA Cup will now be played on Saturday, and Manchester United's next game will be against Everton. The Manchester United-Everton game will take place at Old Trafford. The Red Devils enter the game after defeating Bournemouth 3-0 in the Premier League on Tuesday, while Everton lost 4-1 to Brighton & Hove Albion on the same night. The last time the Red Devils won the FA Cup was in 2016, but it seems that Ten Hag will treat every tournament seriously this year as he looks to win a trophy in his first season in charge.

Everton will enter this game coming off a 4-1 home loss to Brighton on Tuesday night. As a consequence, they now have 15 points and are in 16th place in the Premier League standings. Everton did enjoy their trip to Manchester on December 31, holding Man City to a 1-1 draw in Premier League play. Lampard would have had some breathing room after that result.

Former England goalkeeper Jack Butland said on Friday he was "relishing" joining Manchester United on loan from Premier League rivals Crystal Palace for the remainder of the season. The 29-year-old is set to provide both cover and competition for first-choice David De Gea and current reserve keeper Tom Heaton at Old Trafford after Martin Dubravka was recalled from his loan move by parent club Newcastle.

Butland, capped nine times by England, said in a statement, "This is an amazing club and one that I am now proud to represent. I'm really looking forward to working with an unbelievable goalkeeping group, supporting each other every day to create the best training and playing environment for the team."

"I've played against David De Gea and represented England alongside Tom Heaton; they are top-class keepers and I am relishing the opportunity to compete alongside and support them as team-mates,” he added. "There is a lot that this group can achieve this season and I'm excited to play my part in helping everyone to reach these ambitions."

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag, speaking ahead of Friday's FA Cup tie with Everton, stressed the importance of having three proven goalkeepers in his squad.

"We need a squad with three experienced goalkeepers," Ten Hag told a pre-match press conference on Thursday. "What is (Butland) bringing? I'm really happy with David, it's quite clear he's our number one, but something can happen with David."

"You have to be prepared for that and not be in such a moment where you have only one experienced (goalkeeper), you can be unlucky. Last year I had this situation with Ajax," he said.

Premier League: Manchester United breeze past Bournemouth to consolidate top four spots

Arsenal closed out 2022 with a 4-2 win over Brighton & Hove Albion on Saturday that gives them a seven-point lead at the top of the Premier League after title rivals Manchester City and Newcastle United both dropped points. The Gunners opened up a 3-0 lead through Bukayo Saka, Martin Odegaard and Eddie Nketiah but Brighton never gave up, pulling two goals back either side of a Gabriel Martinelli strike to set up a nervous finish for the Gunners, who held on to win.

The victory leaves Arsenal in pole position on 43 points from 16 games with champions City on 36, Newcastle on 34 from 17 and Manchester United on 32 from 16.

Earlier in the day City wasted their chance to increase the pressure on Arsenal, drawing 1-1 at home to struggling Everton despite Erling Haaland's 21st league goal of the season giving them the lead.

Newcastle United also dropped home points as a 0-0 stalemate with Leeds United deprived Eddie Howe's side of a seventh successive league win.

Marcus Rashford gave the perfect response to being left out for disciplinary reasons by scoring Manchester United's winning goal in a 1-0 victory at Wolverhampton Wanderers that lifted them into the Premier League's top four on Saturday. The in-form Rashford was benched by manager Erik ten Hag after being late for a team meeting but came off the bench to fire home a 76th minute winner at Molineux.

Southampton will end the year rock bottom after conceding late on to lose 2-1 at Fulham -- their fifth successive defeat.

Crystal Palace hit back from a 3-0 home defeat by Fulham on Monday to beat Bournemouth 2-0 away thanks to goals by Jordan Ayew and Eberechi Eze.

Rashford has been rejuvenated for club and country and after scoring three goals for England at the World Cup has now scored three goals in three games in all competitions since returning. But his day did not start off as planned with manager Ten Hag leaving him out of the starting line-up as punishment for what was a minor disciplinary lapse.

Without him United were struggling to break down a Wolves rearguard with his replacement Alejandro Garnacho wasting the visitors' best chance to break the deadlock. Rashford was sent on at the interval for Garnacho and sealed the points in the 76th minute when he held off Wolves' substitute Jonny before lashing the ball home from close range.

"He was bright, he was lively and he scored a goal to give a good reaction," Ten Hag said. "Everyone has to adhere to the rules and if you react like this, it is the right answer."

When Haaland latched on to Riyad Mahrez's pass to tap home in the 24th minute it looked almost a formality that City would slice Arsenal's lead down to two points.

But Everton, on a three-match losing run in the league, had other ideas and stunned the hosts after the break when Demarai Gray cut inside and unleashed a curling effort from the edge of the penalty area which beat City's goalkeeper Ederson.

Everton moved two points above the drop zone.

Newcastle's Brazilian midfielder Bruno Guimaraes wore a yellow shirt with the number 10 on the back during a minute's applause for compatriot Pele who died on Thursday as the Premier League paid tribute to the iconic player.

But he was unable to inspire his side to a victory against a resolute Leeds side who hung on for a point.

PL: Arsenal end 2022 in pole position with 4-2 win over Brighton, champions Manchester City held to 1-1 draw

Manchester United made a positive start to life without Cristiano Ronaldo as Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial stepped out from the Portuguese's shadow to score in a 3-0 win over Nottingham Forest on Tuesday. Ronaldo's rollercoaster second spell at Old Trafford came to an end during the World Cup break after an explosive interview in which he took aim at manager Erik ten Hag and the club's owners.

On the field, his influence had already waned since Ten Hag took charge at the start of the season. Rashford has been a player transformed under the Dutch coach and carried his fine form for England at the World Cup into the Premier League's return. A brilliantly worked corner opened the floodgates for United as Christian Eriksen picked out an unmarked Rashford inside the area to sweep into the top corner. Forest were without their first choice goalkeeper Dean Henderson as he is on loan from United and his understudy Wayne Hennessey was culpable when the home side doubled their lead just three minutes later. Rashford's burst down the left and teed up Martial at the edge of the box, but the Frenchman's strike should not have had enough power to beat the Welsh international goalkeeper.

United were also short handed at the back with Lisandro Martinez absent following Argentina's World Cup celebrations, Diogo Dalot injured and Harry Maguire still feeling the aftereffects of an illness. As a result Raphael Varane was forced into starting just nine days after playing 113 minutes for France in the World Cup final, while Luke Shaw lined up as a centre-back in a back four for the first time. But Forest did little to test a makeshift backline as they remain with just one goal away from home in the league all season.

Steve Cooper's men did have the ball in the net shortly before half-time, but Willy Boly's effort was ruled out for offside after a lengthy VAR check.
Ten Hag has publicly stated his desire to add a striker in the January window given Ronaldo's departure and United should have added more than one goal in the second half. Antony fired straight at Hennessey after fine play from Rashford and Bruno Fernandes gave the Brazilian a clear sight of goal.

Hennessey also stood firm to block from Martial and Rashford from close range, but the Red Devils finally got the third goal they deserved three minutes from time. The imperious Casemiro strode forward to win possession and picked out his Brazilian compatriot Fred to slot into the far corner. Victory takes United to within one point of the top four and with a game in hand to come on fourth-placed Tottenham. Forest remain rooted in the relegation zone, but just one point adrift of safety.

Chelsea manager Graham Potter praised the Blues' reaction to a poor run prior to the World Cup as they eased past Bournemouth 2-0 on Tuesday to end a five-game winless streak in the Premier League. Kai Havertz and Mason Mount struck inside the first 24 minutes to get Chelsea back in the hunt for a place in next season's Champions League. Victory took Chelsea up to eighth and within six points of the top four.

"You have to use breaks as best you can," Potter told Amazon Prime. "Evaluate and reassess and get injured players back. We used it as best we could even with players coming back at different times." However, victory came at a cost as defender Reece James limped off on his return from the knee injury which kept him out of England’s World Cup campaign.

James cruised through the first half but called for a substitution early in the second and looked disconsolate as he pointed to his knee before going to ground."You can see his quality. It's a blow for us," added Potter. "I'm not sure on the state of the injury. It's too early to say." Potter, aiming to avoid overseeing a fourth consecutive Chelsea league defeat for the first time since 1998, handed Denis Zakaria his Premier League debut.

The Swiss midfielder broke forward well to drive Chelsea up the pitch in the first half, while the effervescent attacking duo of Raheem Sterling and Christian Pulisic led the Bournemouth defence on a merry dance. Sterling provided the opener with an incisive low cross to the back post where Havertz slid in to convert in the 16th minute. Mount doubled the lead with a well-taken drive from the edge of the box as Chelsea stepped up another gear before Pulisic had another goal disallowed for a foul by Havertz in the build-up.

After three games in all competitions without scoring a goal, the Blues were determined to end their disappointing streak and get their season back on track. Bournemouth goalkeeper Mark Travers did well to deny James after a dynamic burst forward, then made an even better save to foil Sterling before the break to keep his team in the game. Havertz fired wide and Mount forced Travers into a smart low stop as Chelsea tried to put the game out of sight.

In the end they didn't need to as Bournemouth failed to threaten other than Jaidon Anthony's late free-kick that was beaten away by Kepa Arrizabalaga. "We won't be measured on games at Chelsea," said Bournemouth boss Gary O'Neil. "You need everything to go for you. The response to being 2-0 down, they showed incredible belief we could get something from the game." A fifth defeat in six league games leaves Bournemouth just three points above the relegation zone

There have been reports of Cristiano Ronaldo joining the Saudi Arabian club Al-Nassr after his fallout with Manchester United. While the 37-year-old striker has had a tough time in the last few months, with his strained relations with Man United manager Erik Ten Hag and the Old Trafford club owners, the Portugal star has also not found it easy to find a suitable club.

With the Al-Nassr looking set to be Ronaldo's new home, there are reports that Chelsea midfielder N'Golo Kante is also set to join the Portuguese striker. According to The Mirror, the 31-year-old Frenchman is out of contract following the end of the season. Thus, he could move on a free transfer in search of a new challenge despite him wanting to remain firm in London.

Playing in Saudi Arabia might prove to be less taxing on Kante's body and, in turn, offer also help him secure a huge deal in what would likely be his last few years as a professional footballer.

Chelsea midfielder N’Golo Kante to unite with Cristiano Ronaldo at Saudi club Al-Nassr: Reports

Marcus Rashford marked his return from World Cup duty with a brilliant solo goal as Manchester United advanced into the quarter-finals of the League Cup on Wednesday with a 2-0 win over Burnley while Premier League rivals Brighton were knocked out by third-tier Charlton.

United's first game since the World Cup was also their first since Cristiano Ronaldo's dramatic departure from Old Trafford and an announcement by owners the Glazer family that they were prepared to sell the football giants.

The Red Devils went ahead in the 27th minute through a close-range finish from Denmark's Christian Eriksen, who also featured at Qatar 2022.

Rashford, who scored three goals for England at the World Cup, doubled United's lead against second-tier Championship leaders Burnley, managed by former Manchester City star Vincent Kompany, just before the hour mark in superb style.

The England forward went on a run from inside his own half and into the visitors' box before drilling a shot low into the net.

"There is space in front of you and you're almost waiting for the right time to get a pass off but the gap opened and thankfully it went in," Rashford told Sky Sports.

'No time to feel sorry'

This was Rashford's first match since England's agonising World Cup quarter-final loss to France, with the forward saying: "It was such a disappointing feeling to be knocked out and you have to pick yourselves up.

"There is no time to feel sorry for yourself. You need to pick up results and thankfully we did that today."

United manager Erik ten Hag added: "There is still room for improvement but I am pleased with the win.

"The players are hungry after the World Cup break."

Burnley boss Kompany was proud of his side's performance, saying: "We didn't roll over, we were aggressive, we were on front foot, we created some chances."

Brighton bowed out on spot-kicks three days after their Argentina star Alexis Mac Allister won the World Cup with Argentina in a penalty shoot-out.

Mac Allister was not involved on Wednesday after being given time off following his World Cup heroics and was thus spared any involvement away to southeast London side Charlton.

A goalless draw saw the game go to penalties, with an extraordinary shoot-out starting with Pascal Gross, Jayden Stockley and Leandro Trossard all hitting the woodwork.

Brighton keeper Jason Steele saved from George Dobson and Jesurun Rak-Sakyi.

That left Solly March with the chance to win the game but the Seagulls star shot high over the crossbar.

Addicks goalkeeper Ashley Maynard-Brewer then saved Moises Caicedo's penalty, with Sam Lavelle scoring the decisive goal at The Valley as League One Charlton booked their place in the quarter-finals with a 4-3 shoot-out win.

"I'm sorry for the result and sorry for our fans, we wanted to win the game and play in the quarter-finals," said Brighton manager Roberto De Zerbi.

"We had opportunities to score. And in penalties you can lose."

Charlton interim boss Anthony Hayes, in charge of his last match before Dean Holden, the club's fifth manager in less than two years, takes over, said: "It was a special night. It gives everyone a lift."

Nottingham Forest, four-time winners of the League Cup, had no such problems against lower league opposition, the top-flight strugglers defeating Championship high-flyers Blackburn Rovers 4-1.

Forest went ahead at Ewood Park through Brennan Johnson's 13th-minute penalty before Scott Wharton made amends for conceding the spot-kick by equalising on the stroke of half-time.

But further goals from Jesse Lingard, Taiwo Awoniyi and Johnson again took Forest into the quarter-finals for the first time since 1994.

Marcus Rashford strikes for Man Utd as Charlton stun Brighton in League Cup

Immediately after the World Cup, Manchester United have got down to business by tying down Marcus Rashford, Luke Shaw, Diago Dalot, and Fred with a contract extension.

Immediately after the World Cup, Manchester United have got down to business by tying down Marcus Rashford, Luke Shaw, Diago Dalot, and Fred with a contract extension. According to The Athletic report, United have triggered one-year contract extensions for them. Rashford was in red-hot form during the World Cup where he managed to bag three goals despite not starting every game. United giving him an extension comes in the backdrop of several big clubs flirting with the idea of hiring his services. Paris Saint-Germain president Nasser Al-Khelaifi heaped praises on Rashford and said his club may be on the lookout to avail the services of the 25-year-old. "He's another player who's amazing and for free? To have Rashford for free, every club will run after him," said Al-Khelaifi. Read more: Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag makes an astonishing Mbappe-Rashford comparison "Maybe summer, why not? If he is a free agent, we can talk to him directly. But we are not going to talk to him now and let him focus on the World Cup. In January, hopefully, we would be interested in talking to him." As for Dalot, the winger has had a revival in fortunes after receiving regular game-time under manager Erik ten Hag's watch. The Portuguese was able to translate his club form for the national team during the World Cup and dropped a few notable performances. Luke Shaw, coming from injury has been a vital cog in United's revival plan. He is one of the few left-wingers in the United squad that has the capability to continuously whip dangerous crosses into the opposition box and track back when necessary. Fred has been immense whenever called upon and was one of the few bright spots last season when United's season was in disarray. However, one of the notable names to have missed out on receiving the extension is goalkeeper David de Gea whose contract expires at the end of this season. The Spanish goalkeeper was snubbed from the World Cup squad as well and is facing a race against time to secure another contract from United where he has been for over 11 years. de Gea previously expressed that he was willing to lower his wages to prolong his stay with the Red Devils. Manchester United trigger contract extension for key players but one 'veteran' misses out

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has revealed Jadon Sancho will not be immediately available for the Red Devils when the Premier League action resumes as he is undergoing fitness programmes to improve mentally and physically.

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has revealed Jadon Sancho will not be immediately available for the Red Devils when the Premier League action resumes as he is undergoing fitness programmes to improve mentally and physically. "I have had several talks with Jadon. He's on a physical programme and our aim is to get him back as quickly as possible but I can't give a prognosis of when that will be," the United manager told the media. The Dutch stated that his team did not know what was causing the drop in Sancho's performance. "When the league started he played some good games but after we got a drop of levels. Sometimes you don't know why or what is causing it." Read more: 'We want him...': Erik ten Hag calls on this England defender to bring his WC form to United Ten Hag cited the start offseason as an example where Sancho had three goals in eight appearances. However, such was the drop in performance that the Dutch had to axe him from the final four games before the World Cup break. "Most of the time it comes slowly. First you observe but the stats back it up. In the start of the season he had goals and assists but his key moments and key actions became less and less. It's a combination of physical but also mental. We're trying to research and get him back." United signed Sancho from Borussia Dortmund for a record fee of $100 million. At the time, Sancho was touted as one of the brightest stars on the horizon. However, since his move to Old Trafford, the 22-year-old has had a shocking drop in performance. Not only has Sancho failed to grab a spot in the United XI, but he has also fallen in the pecking order for the national team. He was snubbed for UEFA Nations League as well as the World Cup. United return to action in a Carabao Cup fixture against Burnley on December 21. The Red Devils will resume their Premier League campaign on December 27, facing Nottingham Forest. Jadon Sancho not likely to return to Premier League action, reveals Man United manager Erik ten Hag

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag is hopeful that England defender Harry Maguire can bring his World Cup form to the club side. "We want him to bring that back to Manchester with him so he can bring it on the pitch for United," said the United manager.

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag is hopeful that England defender Harry Maguire can bring his World Cup form to the club side. "We want him to bring that back to Manchester with him so he can bring it on the pitch for United," said the United manager. The Dutch coach noted that Maguire has had good games for the national side almost whenever he is called. "It's clear he is good enough to play at the highest level. He had a period in Manchester where he performed badly and then, of course, there are difficulties. For England, he has good games almost all the time." "I think he had a really good World Cup. He was really consistent. When he is playing with his confidence like now, he is a massively important player for us and that is what everyone expects." Read more: Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag makes an astonishing Mbappe-Rashford comparison Ever since Ten Hag came to Old Trafford, Maguire had been limited to the bench. Players like Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez were preferred over him, primarily because the Dutch plays a high-pressing game with a backline that stays high. Maguire had a dip in form during the latter stages of Ralf Ragnick's era which unfortunately continued after the former Ajax manager took over. The injuries did not help the fortunes of the former Leicester City defender either. So far, Maguire has only played four Premier league games this season. Experts believe if the 29-year-old is unable to break into Ten Hag's side after the solid World Cup campaign, he will have to move away from Old Trafford for different pastures. Following Chelsea's hurried sale in the aftermath of Russia's invasion of Ukraine which forced Roman Ambramovic to sell the club, it has been widely reported that two of the most successful Premier League clubs such as Liverpool and Manchester United are also up for a sale.

Ever since reports emerged that both Man United and the Liverpool FC owners are willing to sell the club, Indian industrialist Mukesh Ambani has emerged as a strong contender to buy one of the two clubs. However, it is believed that Ambani is eyeing to buy the 13-time English champion Arsenal and not Man United or Liverpool.

At present, Arsenal's majority stakes are with the American-based Kroenke family (Kroenke Sports & Entertainment company). The report has further revealed that Ambani's son Akash is a big fan of the current Premier League table toppers Arsenal and, hence, the industrialist might try really hard to take over the ownership.

England centre-back Harry Maguire has taken a shot at the match referee post their quarterfinal exit from the FIFA World Cup in Qatar. Referees at the World Cup have been receiving stick ever since the knockout phase began.

England centre-back Harry Maguire has taken a shot at the match referee post their quarterfinal exit from the FIFA World Cup in Qatar. Referees at the World Cup have been receiving stick ever since the knockout phase began. After Argentina and Portugal, England have joined the list of countries irked by the decision-making of tournament referees. "I thought the referee’s decision-making throughout the game was really poor. We always stand here, we as players, we get criticised, so it would be nice to see if he comes out and says whether he’s had a good game or not," said Maguire in a post-match TV interview. "There were so many decisions in that first half where France made five, six early fouls. I think [Kane] was outside the box but it was a clear foul," added Maguire. The Manchester United player pointed at how Wilton Sampaio, the referee initially didn't give the penalty in the second half. "He doesn’t initially give the penalty in the second half. The one on Bukayo is a clear foul, leading up to their first goal. Just big moments, big decisions, and you expect a referee to get some right. Unfortunately tonight, he didn’t get any." Notably, similar criticism was levelled by Portuguese players following their 1-0 defeat against Morocco. Portugal's midfield leader Bruno Fernandes said an 'Argentine' referee should not have been allowed to officiate their match. "I don't know if they're going to give the cup to Argentina. I don't care, I'm going to say what I think, and screw them. It's very strange that a referee from a team that's still in the cup officiates us. They've clearly tilted the field against us." Read more: FIFA World Cup 2022: Portuguese players blame 'Argentine' referee for World Cup exit While England and Portugal blaming referees could be understood as they have been knocked out of the tournament, a similar complaint was made by Argentina despite progressing to the semis. Skipper Lionel Messi in an interview took a shot at referee Lahoz who handed as many as 18 yellow cards during the course of the match, setting a new record in the process. "I don’t want to speak about referees because they will sanction you. But people saw what happened. I think FIFA must take care of this. It cannot put a referee like that for a match of such magnitude, of such importance. The referee cannot fail to be up to the task," said Messi. Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has revealed that he wanted Cristiano Ronaldo to stay and that he didn't know about his plans to leave the club, prior to the infamous Piers Morgan interview. The Dutch made the revelation in Spain where Manchester United are currently holding a camp ahead of the Premier league resumption. "I wanted him to stay from the first moment until now. He wanted to leave, it was quite clear. And when a player definitely doesn't want to be in this club then he has to go." The former Ajax manager said he first came to know about Ronaldo's desire to leave the club after the release of the interview. "The interview was the first time he said he wanted to leave. I think as a club you can't accept that. There will be consequences. Before he [had] never told me." Read more: 'He’s gone...': Erik Ten Hag reacts to Cristiano Ronaldo's ouster from Man United after explosive claims The talks of Ronaldo's transfer had gathered pace during the transfer window before the beginning of the season. However, ten Hag maintains that Ronaldo never told him about his plans. "In the summer we had one talk. He came in and said, 'I will tell you in seven days if I want to stay'. Then he came back and said, 'I want to stay'. Until that moment [the interview] I never heard anything." Read more: Is Cristiano Ronaldo moving to Saudi Arabian club Al-Nassr? Rumours of him joining the Saudi Arabian club Al-Nassr have routinely come up but the 37-year-old has not yet confirmed the news. 'I wanted him to stay', reveals Erik ten Hag after Cristiano Ronaldo's Manchester United exit

It was a controversial end to Cristiano Ronaldo's second stint at Manchester United. After his explosive claims in a recent interview with British broadcaster Piers Morgan, where he slammed the Old Trafford club owners and came hard on team manager Erik Ten Hag, the 37-year-old Portugal star player was shown the door with his contract still not getting over. Ronaldo spoke at length on his equation with the Dutch manager and how he felt 'betrayed' by the treatment he received from the senior club executives.

As the situation became out of control, Ronaldo departed from the club where he had a memorable first stint, under Sir Alex Ferguson. Following his departure, Erik Ten Hag has finally opened up on his explosive interview. In an interview to MUTV, he said, "He’s gone and it’s the past. We are now looking forward and we’re looking to the future. When you change things in an organisation and change the way of playing, that takes time. In top-level football, you never get time. Opponents they want to kill you and that happened. We had to quickly adapt and I think our squad did terrific. The mentality changed and I think our way of playing changed during the season, the style, and I think we are growing and we have to keep the process going.," he added.
