Indian drone firm Garuda Aerospace is working on fulfilling orders from foreign customers for 8,000 drones that serve purposes including agriculture (pesticide spraying), industrial inspection, and mapping.

Besides these drones that will have to be delivered to clients across the UAE, Malaysia, and Panama, the company is working on fulfilling orders with Indian government-run and private entities.

WION spoke to Agnishwar Jayaprakash, the Founder and CEO of Garuda Aerospace, to understand how the company is scaling up capacity to meet the demand.

Garuda’s drones recently completed mapping of over 1000 villages for Survey of India - Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh as part of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Swamitva scheme, which aims to provide digital records of land ownership. When queried about the pace at which this was done and the scale of operation, Agnishwar explained that a single drone was able to map five villages (each measuring up to 3 sq km) in a day and that they had deployed a sizable fleet to map 1000 villages in a month. Their work involved not just aerial mapping, but also providing the final output of processed map data.

Their work for clients in India includes services such as pipeline inspection for Indian Oil Corporation Limited, the National Highways Authority of India Surveillance Project (to monitor highway construction) and catering to the mapping and topographical survey needs of energy companies like Reliance, Adani, Vedanta, and Tata projects, among others.

On the steep target of having to deliver 8,000 drones to foreign clients by March 2022, Agnishwar said that the company has ramped up manufacturing capacity by opening two new facilities. "Earlier, we could churn out up to 30 drones per day from our lone Chennai facility, but with the new units in Gurgaon and Hosur, we can produce up to a total of 100-150 drones a day. We had the opportunity to invest and expand this way owing to the new orders and encouraging revenue, " he added.

According to Agnishwar, selling agriculture and mapping drones to foreign countries would mean that Garuda would have to setup an assembly facility and provide support services in the respective countries, as well. "They will give us the land and manpower support. We’ll send a small team, parts, tools, and equipment to supervise and provide training.

While he does admit that delivery of all 8,000 drones by March 2022 is an aggressive target, he hopes to enable delivery of a significant portion of the order within the deadline.

Malaysia is facing one of its worst floods in years, over 7,000 people have been displaced from their homes in Malaysia on Sunday; the death toll has now risen to 27.

Malaysia is hit by one of the worst floods, death toll rises to 27

In what is being deemed as one-in-a-100-year rainfall in Malaysia, authorities have confirmed that at least fourteen people have died as a result of the floods that have ravaged Malaysia, as the government faces criticism from the public and opposition legislators over its rescue operations.

Environment and Water Ministry's secretary-general Zaini Ujang, while speaking at a news conference said, "The annual rainfall in Kuala Lumpur is 2,400 mm and this means yesterday’s (Saturday’s) rainfall exceeded the average rainfall for a month. It is something beyond expectations and only occurs once every 100 years."

Floods are frequent on Malaysia's eastern coast between October and March during the yearly monsoon season, but particularly heavy rain that began on Friday has put a burden on emergency services across the country.

Selangor, which is the country's wealthiest state has been badly affected.

As per Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob, one month's rainfall poured down in one day in Selangor. As a result, tens of thousands of emergency service and military personnel were deployed to aid rescue efforts.

Videos that have surfaced on social media show rivers overflowing and villages being flooded. Heavy downpours have resulted in swollen rivers, emerging many urban areas and cutting major transport lines in the country.

Singapore and Malaysia will next week launch a quarantine-free travel lane at their land border crossing, one of the world's busiest, for people vaccinated against COVID-19, the two countries said on Wednesday.

Following outrage among public and human rights activists, Singapore high court has temporarily stayed the execution of an intellectually disabled Malaysian man who was accused of smuggling heroin into the country.

Nagaenthran Dharmalingam was arrested in April 2009 when he was 21, for attempting to smuggle 43 grams of heroin into Singapore.

In 2010, he was sentenced to death and was scheduled to be hanged on November 10.

The court’s order was widely criticised by the human rights activists who claimed that Dharmalingam has limited mental capacity.

On Monday, the high court ordered a stay of execution following a last-minute constitutional challenge by his lawyer M. Ravi.

The court dismissed the lawyer's application to declare the execution unconstitutional, but granted a stay of execution until an appeal on its decision can be heard.

Ravi said his client was a victim of drug trafficking and should be released.

"He has been gamed. He is a victim of the [drug-trafficking] operation. He needs treatment and help,” BBC quoted Ravi as saying.

According to campaigners, it was disclosed during the trial that Dharmalingam has an IQ of 69 and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. His supporters say there is evidence that Dharmalingam was forced to courier drugs as a victim of human trafficking.

But the Singapore authorities have repeatedly stressed that Dharmalingam is of sound mind and was fully aware of his actions.

The Malaysian Prime Minister, Ismail Sabri Yaakob, has even written to Singapore’s Prime Minister, Lee Hsien Loong, seeking leniency in his case, according to Malaysian media.

Medical supplies firm in Malaysia is all set to launch what it says will be the world's first unisex condom. The product is made from a medical-grade adhesive covering that allows it to be fixed to the reproductive organs of either sex.

Medical supplies firm in Malaysia is all set to launch what it says will be the world's first unisex condom. The product is made from a medical-grade adhesive covering that allows it to be fixed to the reproductive organs of either sex. John Tang Ing Ching, who is the creator of "Wondaleaf Unisex Condom", is hoping that the product can provide safer sexual experiences. The product is expected to hit the markets in December. John, himself a gynaecologist and obstetrician, further said that the idea of the condom came after being troubled by the high rate of unintended pregnancies and sexually transmitted diseases. ALSO READ | DNA testing proves South Dakota man is grandson of famed Native American Sitting Bull He said, "Idea of Wondaleaf unisex condom is just a natural progression of what I do in my line of work. For example, I always gown up properly to avoid contamination of bodily fluid from my patients and this is much better than washing myself up or taking prophylactic medications for specific infections." John Tang Ing Ching also saw a need for an alternative form of contraception, due to the side effects and high cost of hormonal birth control for women. "I think the same can be said about sexual intercourse. Barrier methods, condoms and female condoms, should be the most effective methods for the least side effects in the prevention of pregnancies and STIs," he said. ALSO READ | Archeologists make shocking revelations after DNA analysis of mummies in China About the product: The condoms are made of the same material as transparent wound dressings which are thin, flexible and provide protection. Tang says the adhesive nature of the condom means it can be put on early without slipping off, making it a safer contraceptive, it is reversible and can be either inserted into the vagina or worn over the male penis. Tang said the product has gone through several rounds of clinical research and testing and will be available commercially via the firm's website in December. "And based on the number of clinical trials we have conducted, I am quite optimistic that given time it will be a meaningful addition to the many contraceptive methods used in the prevention of unintended pregnancies and sexually transmitted diseases.," he said. "With the non-discriminatory Wondaleaf UNISEX condom, everyone can be empowered to take charge of their own sexual health regardless of their gender or sexual orientation," he added.

Malaysia's AirAsia Group Bhd said it has reached a deal with Airbus SE to restructure an order for 362 narrowbody planes worth tens of billions of dollars, including switching 13 A320neos to the larger A321neo model.

Deliveries of the 362 A321neos are now planned through 2035, the cash-strapped airline said on Wednesday, without providing details of the previous timetable.

Industry sources told Reuters last month that Airbus had agreed to reschedule deliveries and improve terms for its largest Asian customer to salvage the valuable contract.

AirAsia received its first A321neo in November 2019 and currently has four in service after halting deliveries during the pandemic.

Airbus sold six A321neos that had been built for AirAsia last year, industry sources have said.

Airbus Chief Commercial Officer Christian Scherer said in a statement that the deal was an example of how the planemaker had worked with customers to adapt to the impact of the pandemic.

Other airlines with large plane orders, most of which are in Asia, are also in the midst of restructuring their orders or are expected to press for relief.

"It is hard to cancel unless an airline goes the bankruptcy or court-aided restructuring route," said Brendan Sobie, an independent aviation analyst. "The AirAsia order still makes sense given the delivery flexibility and assuming they have resolved the price escalation issue."

Planemakers typically put price escalation clauses into contracts that lead to price rises when airlines delay delivery but also have the discretion to waive or not fully enforce the price rises.

AirAsia`s auditors have, for more than a year, raised doubts about its ability to continue as a going concern due to COVID-19 impact on the travel industry.

AirAsia Group President Bo Lingam said the airline had thoroughly reviewed its network and fleet strategy as it prepares for travel to resume.

"Our business model is robust, and there is a lot of pent-up demand," he said. "We are confident that our airlines will be able to rebound and recover strongly as soon as travel restrictions are lifted."

AirAsia said this week had received approval from Malaysia`s only financial guarantee issuer for a loan of up to 500 million ringgit ($120 million) with an 80 per cent government guarantee.

Tokyo Paralympics has so far been a huge success. However, there was a shocking turn of events as Malaysia's Ziyad Zolkefli was denied of his gold medal for arriving three minutes late for the shot put final event in the F20 class.

The International Paralympic Committee spokesman Craig Spence revealed that Zolkefli along with two others who did not reach the podium were allowed to compete under protest after they failed to appear at the scheduled time for the event.

"They were late, they may have had a logical reason for being late, and therefore we allowed them to compete and look at the facts of the matter afterward,” Spence said as per a report in The Guardian. On the other hand, a statement from World Para Athletics stated that a referee had revealed that “there was no justifiable reason for the athletes’ failure to report” on time.

Following the unfortunate turn of events for Ziyad, his disqualification served as a huge gain for Ukraine's Maksym Koval who ended up securing gold whereas his Ukrainian teammate Oleksandr Yarovyi took silver. Meanwhile, Greece's Efstratios Nikolaidis ended at the third spot with a bronze medal.

Severe heat on social media platforms

Spence further revealed, "We are now seeing comments on all our social media posts that have nothing to do with the men’s shot put F20 event." In addition, he stated that the Ukrainian Paralympic Committee “was getting a lot of abuse from Malaysians" post what happened with Ziyad.

Spence added, "I’m sorry. Rules are rules. The decision was taken. It wasn’t the Ukrainians’ fault that the Malaysian was late. Others get there five minutes early."

He revealed that the excuse given was that the Malaysian athlete Ziyad and two others defended themselves by saying that they didn't hear the announcement or it was in a language they didn't understand for their late arrival. Following the episode, reactions have come in from all corners with many sympathising with the Malaysian athlete Ziyad.

Talking about the medal tally, China continues to top the overall standings whereas Ukraine finds itself at the 5th spot following Ziyad's disqualification.

A simple paper craft is fast becoming a way for Malaysians to pay tribute to the departed. The religious festival of Hungry Ghost sees Buddhists across Southeast Asia give offerings of food for the spirits of the deceased they believe return to Earth during this time. Offerings made of paper are also made. These resemble the things the deceased may have wanted.

This year, a box set of a syringe and two vaccine vials made of paper are among the fastest-selling items for the festival at Raymond Shieh Siow Leong's religious goods store in the southern Malaysian city of Johor Bahru.

"The COVID-19 situation in our country is quite serious and many people passed away before receiving the vaccine. I hope this product can help the deceased to fulfill their dying wish," Shieh said.

He started making paper vaccine sets in early August. Each set is priced at 22.80 ringgit ($5.45). Shieh says he has sold more than 200 sets so far.

Malaysia’s king is set to meet the heads of political parties to find a new Prime Minister amid a worsening coronavirus pandemic in the country. Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin had resigned after mounting public anger over his government’s poor handling of the pandemic.

Malaysia's king to meet heads of political parties to find a new Prime Minister for country

Malaysia’s king said Wednesday that the new prime minister he picks must swiftly seek a confidence vote in Parliament after a deadline for all lawmakers to submit the names of their preferred candidates to the palace passed.

Based on the lawmakers’ choices, King Sultan Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah said he will pick a candidate he believes has majority support, but this must then be tested in Parliament. He is to chair a meeting of nine Malay state rulers on Friday to discuss the decision.

The monarch has ruled out a new general election because many parts of the country are COVID-19 red zones and health facilities are inadequate. Muhyiddin Yassin, who resigned as prime minister on Monday after losing the backing of a majority in Parliament, has been appointed caretaker leader until a successor is selected.

Sultan Abdullah, who met with political party leaders on Tuesday, said he urged lawmakers to unite and halt the bickering that has disrupted the country’s administration for months amid a worsening coronavirus outbreak.

The new leader "must work in hand with those who lost and all parties should be prepared to work as a team," the king said in a statement. "In other words, the winner does not win it all while the losers do not lose it all."

Muhyiddin departed after less than 18 months in office amid infighting in his alliance and mounting public anger over what was widely perceived as his government’s poor handling of the pandemic. Malaysia has one of the world’s highest infection rates and deaths per capita, despite a seven-month state of emergency and a lockdown since June.

Malaysia reported a record 22,242 new cases on Wednesday, bringing its total to 1.46 million. Deaths have surged to more than 13,000.

The king's role is largely ceremonial in Malaysia, but he appoints the person he believes has majority support in Parliament as prime minister.

The race appeared to have been whittled down to two main candidates: former Deputy Prime Minister Ismail Sabri and opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim.

Muhyiddin appointed Ismail as his deputy in July in a bid to ease tensions with the United Malays National Organisation, the biggest party in his alliance. Ismail then led a faction in UMNO that defied a party order to pull support for the government. In the end, 15 UMNO lawmakers withdrew, causing the government which had a razor-thin majority to collapse.

Ismail, 61, appeared to be the frontrunner for the job after UMNO's 38 lawmakers reportedly agreed to set aside differences at a meeting late Tuesday and back him as their candidate. Muhyiddin's party and several others in his alliance have also voiced their support.

UMNO secretary-general Ahmad Maslan tweeted that "only one name will be sent as Prime Minister nominee," that of Ismail. Another lawmaker, Azalina Othman, told local media that Ismail is believed to be able to muster the backing of at least 111 lawmakers, the number needed for a simple majority.

It appears tough for Anwar, 74, to reach 111 votes. His three-party alliance has 88 lawmakers and if all smaller opposition parties back him, he would still only have 105 votes.

Anwar was due to succeed then-Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad before their reformist alliance collapsed in February 2020, sparked by the withdrawal of Muhyiddin's party. Muhyiddin then formed a new government with corruption-tainted UMNO, which was ousted in 2018 elections, and several other parties.

If Ismail wins, it will essentially restore the rule of the former unpopular UMNO-led government. Some analysts said Ismail would be a poor choice because he is associated with the failings of Muhyiddin's government.

"He carries the baggage of a failed government." What Malaysians want is a clean break from unpopular policies of the past government. There is more a hint of continuity than a sharp departure if the premiership were to pass on to Ismail," said Ahmad Fauzi Abdul Hamid, a political science professor at Malaysia's University of Science.

It will also set the stage for increased politicking in UMNO as Ismail, who is now a vice president may later mount a challenge against the party president, he said.

The development comes as the country is struggling with its deadliest COVID-19 outbreak yet. After holding a special meeting with cabinet members, Yassin offered resignation to the king.

His resignation follows months of political instability, which eventually led to the loss of his majority in parliament.

According to the palace, King Al-Sultan Abdullah did not believe an election should be held due to the coronavirus situation, and he was happy for Muhyiddin to stay on as interim leader.

“The king has received the resignation letter of Muhyiddin Yassin and the entire cabinet effective immediately. Following the resignation, the king is pleased for Muhyiddin to fill the role as caretaker prime minister until a new prime minister is appointed,” it said.

Muhyiddin’s government had been precarious ever since he was sworn in around 18 months ago. He was named PM following a flurry of backroom deals organised after the collapse of the then ruling coalition, but with no public mandate.

In recent weeks his razor-thin parliamentary majority has crumbled, despite attempts to win support from opposition MPs. Muhyiddin is facing growing anger over the coronavirus crisis, which has continued to worsen even after restrictions.

In a televised address, Muhyiddin said he had submitted his resignation to the king because he had failed to maintain the confidence of a majority of lawmakers. He hoped a new government would be formed as soon as possible.

Malaysia's prime minister quits, to take up caretaker role

Malaysia's embattled leader will submit his resignation to the king on Monday, a minister said. His resignation would effectively end his government of 17 months and cause fresh upheaval in the country.

Muhyiddin Yassin has come under pressure to step down since losing his parliamentary majority and also for his administration's response to a worsening Coronavirus outbreak.

Making a last-ditch effort to hold on to power, on Friday he offered institutional reforms in exchange for support from the opposition. However, the offer was rejected.

Minister Mohamad Redzuan Yusof told AFP that Muhyiddin informed his party's lawmakers about his resignation at a meeting Sunday in Kuala Lumpur. It would be up to King Mohammed to accept Muhyiddin's resignation or not, he said at the meeting.

The prime minister will convene a final cabinet meeting on Monday; he will then present his resignation letter at the palace.

"We did try to convince him to stay on, but he said: 'We do not have the number of MPs.'

In Malaysia, the constitutional monarch appoints the candidate he believes commands majority support in parliament as premier.

Muhyiddin came to power last March without elections after the collapse of Mahathir Mohamad's two-year-old reformist government.

He faced chaos from day one: his government had a weak parliamentary majority, its legitimacy was frequently questioned, and opposition chief Anwar Ibrahim remained a serious challenge.

The concern that polls might worsen a virus outbreak has prompted speculation that, should he resign, the new government will be appointed without elections.

As long as there is no clear successor, there will be days of political horse-trading in parliament before a durable coalition is formed.

However, these restrictions will only be lifted in selected eight states, and other areas such as the capital city Kuala Lumpur will still have to follow the curbs.

The decision to ease the curbs was taken after the selected areas recorded a drop in Covid infections and vaccination rates looked promising.

"More people are receiving complete vaccinations... the burden on the public health system will reduce," Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin said in a televised speech. "More economic and social sectors can be opened up in stages, and we can get out of this pandemic (in a) more orderly and safely (manner)."

In addition to the residents of the selected eight states, locals who have been fully vaccinated against coronavirus will also be able to stay clear of these restrictions. Fully vaccinated people will not be subjected to home quarantine upon return to Malaysia.

Malaysia to ease Covid restrictions as cases decline; Kuala Lumpur remains closed

After repeated surges in coronavirus cases, Malaysia has decided that it will no longer use daily infections as a metric to ease Covid restrictions.

The news has come as the country is planning to initiate the second phase of the national recovery plan. From now on, the government will use the Covid hospitalisation rates as one of the three indicators to help state governments decide on whether or not to move to the final phase of the recovery plan.

"Once 40% of adults have been vaccinated, the number of new cases becomes less relevant because most cases show little to no symptoms, hence reducing the burden on public infrastructure," Finance Minister Tengku Zafrul Abdul Aziz said.

The announcement came on the same day when Malaysia reported 19,819 new infections. Although out of these new cases, 98.1 per cent of the patients showed less or no symptoms, the experts are urging caution as they believe Covid patients can show low immunity later, Director-General Noor Hisham Abdullah said in a statement.

Meanwhile, the Malaysian government is trying to increase the speed of the vaccine programme and is urging locals to get vaccinated as soon as possible. As of now, nearly 31 per cent of the adult population has been fully vaccinated and 62 per cent of people have received at least the first dose of the Covid vaccine.

If all goes according to the set plan, the Malaysian government will allow all economic activities to reopen without restrictions, except the ones on the negative list.
