He started serving his 12-year sentence in Kajang Prison, south of Kuala Lumpur, on Tuesday after Malaysia's highest court affirmed it.

Najib had&nbsp;consistently refuted the accusations and was&nbsp;given the all-clear while in office. But his administration was&nbsp;most certainly regarded as one that saw a rise in central power and scandal.

Dynastic rule

Najib Razak is the eldest son of Abdul Razak, Malaysia's second prime minister and the nephew of Hussein Onn, its third prime minister.

Najib returned to Malaysia in 1974 to work for Petronas after receiving his industrial economics degree from the University of Nottingham in the UK.

Prior to succeeding Abdullah Badawi as deputy prime minister in 2004, Najib served in the government in a variety of capacities, including that of minister of energy, telecommunications, education, finance, and defence. Najib assumed leadership when Mr. Abdullah resigned in 2009.

A 'liberal' beginning

As documented by the&nbsp;BBC, Najib initially expressed interest in adopting a more liberal <a href="https://www.wionews.com/south-asia/pti-leader-shahbaz-gill-to-appeal-to-pak-apex-court-over-custodial-torture-509627">political</a> stance, but he never actually did so.

In 2011, he abolished the contentious Internal Security Act and changed strict restrictions regarding public gatherings, but he then reinstated incarceration without charge.

He also broke his promise to remove a contentious sedition statute the next year and strengthened it instead.

The legislation, according to critics, were Najib's attempt to intimidate his political rivals and appease the ethnic Malay-Muslim majority that made up the majority of his political party's supporters.

Anwar Ibrahim, the head of the opposition and a former deputy prime minister, was found guilty of sodomy a second occasion in 2015. Mr. Anwar said the charges were politically motivated.

The opposition figure has subsequently received a pardon from the new prime minister and is regarded as Mr. Mahathir's likely successor.

In 2016, advocates seeking election change were imprisoned under a security law meant to combat terrorism.

Najib's administration established a rule against the dissemination of "fake news" prior to the 2018 election.

A string of controversies

The accusations of corruption and poor management of the state investment fund, 1Malaysia Development Berhad, have been the major stain on Najib's political career.

Najib, members of his family, and a number of supporters are charged with embezzling substantial sums of money that were reportedly used to purchase everything from fine art to high-end properties around the world.

Najib Razak: Malaysia's former PM and his collapse over corruption charges

Najib Razak, &nbsp;former prime minister of Malaysia, requested on Tuesday that the chief justice abstain from sitting over a panel hearing his final appeal to overturn his conviction for corruption and 12-year prison term in a case related to the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/malaysias-top-court-denies-ex-pm-najibs-request-for-a-new-trial-and-an-extension-of-the-appeal-deadline-507486">1MDB financial scandal</a>.

The action was taken after Malaysian prosecutors finished their arguments last week, and the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/trump-seeks-special-master-to-examine-mar-a-lago-documents-509307">Federal Court</a> could perhaps announce its ruling on Tuesday or set a new date for it. Due to a lack of preparation time, Najib's attorneys declined to deliver their arguments.

Najib's attorney requested on Monday that the Chief Justice Tengku Maimun Tuan Mat be removed from the five-member panel hearing his appeal due to "a serious danger of bias" brought on by her husband's social media remarks from 2018.

"Being the husband of the chairperson that is adjudicating my appeal it is likely that he would have influenced the thinking of the mind of the chairperson as to my alleged culpability," according to the application seen by Reuters.

In order to prepare for the application's hearing, the court took a break.

Critics saw the application as Najib's latest attempt to delay the issuance of the top court's final decision.

Just three weeks before to the start of the final appeals process last week, he switched legal counsel. Hisyam Teh Poh Teik, the attorney representing the client, attempted to resign last week but the court refused to let him go.

Najib, 69, was convicted in July 2020 of criminally breaching trust, abusing his position of authority, and money laundering for obtaining $10 million from SRC International, a former division of the state fund 1Malaysia Development Berhad, without authorization (1MDB).

Najib, who maintained his innocence, was given a 12-year prison term and fined 210 million ringgit ($46.84 million).

In a massive scandal that has authorities and financial institutions from all over the world implicated, prosecutors claim that almost $4.5 billion was stolen from 1MDB, which Najib co-founded in 2009 while serving as premier.

Najib has continuously disputed the accusations despite the fact that he is facing many trials.

Former&nbsp;<meta charset="utf-8" /><a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/eyeing-a-comeback-mahathir-mohamad-to-use-malay-nationalism-to-woo-the-voters-504017">Malaysia</a>n Prime Minister Najib Razak's final attempt to challenge a conviction and 12-year sentence imposed in July 2020 began in the nation's highest court on Tuesday, but the court rejected his request to present new evidence and call for a retrial in a corruption case related to the 1MDB financial scandal.

According to details that emerged after the conviction, Najib's attorneys claimed on Monday that Mohamad Nazlan Mohamad Ghazali, the trial judge who presided over the SRC International trial, had a conflict of interest because he had been associated with a bank that did business with 1Malaysia Development Berhad. A division of 1MDB is SRC.

The five-member panel, led by Chief Justice Tengku Maimun Tuan Mat, came to a unanimous conclusion on Tuesday, concluding that there had been "no miscarriage of justice" and that the court had been unable to identify any connection that would have created "a serious threat of prejudice."

Tengku Maimun read from the 20-page decision that the judges had concluded that "the entirety of the additional evidence sought to be introduced... is, in our view, irrelevant to the charges preferred against the applicant and fails to disclose any conflict of interest on the part of Justice Nazlan."

The highest court concluded after more than two hours of debate that Nazlan's function and involvement in the bank were not a secret because the facts might have been learned or obtained if the defence had exercised "due diligence."

Tengku Maimun declared, "All motions... are thus dismissed," requiring Najib's legal team to move forward with his last appeal. On Thursday, the hearing will continue.

Najib, 69, expressed his amazement and disappointment by the court's ruling.

Extension&nbsp;appeal is rejected

The court also rejected the defense's request for a postponement when Najib's lead attorney, Hisyam Teh Poh Teik, pleaded with the judges for additional time to prepare for the trial because the new legal team had only been established at the end of the previous month.

"The document bundles total 179. This case is not typical. Additionally, the law has strong points. Hisyam requested a three to four-month extension and warned that "serious arguments will be raised."

However, since Najib was informed of the hearing date beforehand, Justice Tengku Maimun stated that the court determined that the motion and the reasons for the delay "are neither cogent nor reasonable."

Final plea

The Federal Court set aside August 15–19 and August 23–26 to hear Najib's plea, in which his attorneys listed 94 justifications for why the verdict should be overturned. Najib will become the first prime leader of <meta charset="utf-8" /><a href="https://www.wionews.com/entertainment/hollywood/news-after-thor-love-and-thunder-and-lightyear-malaysia-to-ban-more-films-with-lgbt-elements-506211">Malaysia</a>&nbsp;to serve time in prison if the appeal is denied.

In July 2018, Najib was charged. He was found guilty of seven crimes, including misuse of authority, criminal breach of trust, and money laundering, involving 42 million ringgit ($9.4 million) in SRC International funds discovered in his bank accounts after a two-year trial. He received a 12-year prison term as well as a 210 million ringgit (about $47 million) fine.

Malaysia's top court denies ex-PM Najib's request for a new trial and an extension of the appeal deadline

Malaysia’s high court on Tuesday announced that it would hear former prime minister Najib Razak’s final appeal for his corruption-related 12-year prison term. After rejecting the minister’s request for a new trial, the Federal Court has decided to move forward with the hearing, which will begin this Thursday (August 18).

The former prime minister was found guilty of corruption related to the state fund 1MDB and was given a 12-year prison term. The minister and his associates were charged with stealing billions of dollars from the country’s investment vehicles and using them to purchase luxurious and expensive art and real estate properties.

After two days of hearings, a five-judge panel led by Chief Justice Tengku Maimu Tuan Mat reached a unanimous verdict, which was read out aloud in court. She said, "There is, to our minds, no miscarriage of justice." She further added, "We find that the applicant has failed to cross the high threshold of (the law)... In the circumstances, the motion (to admit fresh evidence for a retrial) is hereby dismissed," AFP reported.

However, Najib’s lawyers requested a three-to-four month adjournment before the hearings begin, but his&nbsp;request was denied. He filed his last-ditch appeal before the court after his previous appeal was turned down.

The chief judge said, "The stark reality is that considerable public funds would be wasted if granting an adjournment in a case of this kind was an easier option." Tengku added, "Justice cannot be unduly delayed. &nbsp;Justice delayed is also justice denied to others," AFP reported.

Authorities in Malaysia have seized an estimated $18 million worth of African elephant tusks, rhino horns, pangolin scales and other illegal animal parts that were part of a single shipment.

Malaysia seizes illegal animal parts worth $18 million

In one of the largest busts of its kind, an estimated 6,000 kilogrammes of elephant tusks, 25 kilogrammes of rhino horns, 100 kilogrammes of pangolin scales and 300 kilogrammes of animal skulls, bones and horns, worth $18 million have been seized by Malaysian custom officials.&nbsp;

The authorities busted the smuggling attempt on July 10 at Port Klang, situated on Malaysia's west coast. The consignment was hidden amongst the timber shipping container which had arrived from Africa. Reportedly, the aforementioned animal parts were part of a single shipment, whose final destination was not Malaysia.

However, looking at the recovered consignment, it cannot be ruled out that the material was bound for China or Vietnam as these countries are particularly infamous for using elephant tusks and pangolin scales in traditional medicines.&nbsp;

The heirs of a 19th-century sultanate are attempting to take Malaysian government assets all over the world, despite a stay of the case issued by a French judge.&nbsp;Talking to Reuters their attorneys said that the heirs&nbsp;are merely&nbsp;attempting&nbsp;to execute a $14.9 billion arbitration verdict they had&nbsp;obtained against the Southeast Asian country. The verdict in question is in connection to a land deal from the colonial era.&nbsp;The&nbsp;Sultan in question had made a deal with a British trading company in 1878 to allow the company to exploit resources in the territory he controlled, including what is now the oil-rich Malaysian state of Sabah, on the northern tip of Borneo. After gaining independence from Britain, Malaysia took over the deal giving the heirs who are&nbsp;Philippine nationals an annual token fee.&nbsp;

The heirs of a 19th-century sultanate are attempting to take Malaysian government assets all over the world, despite a stay of the case issued by a French judge.

The heirs of a 19th-century sultanate are attempting to take Malaysian government assets all over the world, despite a stay of the case issued by a French judge. Talking to Reuters their attorneys said that the heirs are merely attempting to execute a $14.9 billion arbitration verdict they had obtained against the Southeast Asian country. The verdict in question is in connection to a land deal from the colonial era. The Sultan in question had made a deal with a British trading company in 1878 to allow the company to exploit resources in the territory he controlled, including what is now the oil-rich Malaysian state of Sabah, on the northern tip of Borneo. After gaining independence from Britain, Malaysia took over the deal giving the heirs who are Philippine nationals an annual token fee. Russia's war and China's zero-covid lockdowns are straining the global supply chains. Faced with a shortage of feed, Malaysia has decided to ban chicken exports. Palki Sharma tells you why the ban has neighbouring Singapore worried.

Gravitas: Supply crunch forces Malaysia to ban chicken export

For Singapore, chicken-rice is a dish that holds a special place. It is known as the national dish of the country, and it is something that people of all economic strata can enjoy. However, the supply of chicken in Singapore is heavily dependent on their neighbour Malaysia and a decision from the Malaysian government can be bad news for them. &nbsp;Malaysian Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob has announced that the country will be banning live chicken exports from June in order to tackle a domestic shortage. This can be a huge blow to Singapore, a country that imports around 3.6 million live chickens every month, and it looks like they may have to stop consuming chicken-rice for now.

This has created a lot of uproar among the citizens of Singapore and although the government has assured that they will be looking into other options for chicken imports, the price is expected to go up. According to CNN, while traders pay $3 right now, it can go up to $4-5 in the near future.

The CNN report further stated that this can be a direct result of the supply chain issues created by the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict. The rising cost of feed has resulted in the soaring cost of live chicken and hence, the country has decided to keep most of their stocks for their own citizens.

This, in turn, is the cause of the upcoming shortage in Singapore and even if the citizens try to buy bulk amounts of chicken ahead of the ban, it will be difficult for the suppliers to meet the demands.

India had earlier defeated Japan 2-1 in their first match on Saturday.

Meanwhile in the other Super 4 league match, South Korea defeated Japan 3-1 to move to four points. South Korea had earlier drawn 2-2 against Malaysia in their first match.

India drew level in the 53rd minute, courtesy Pawan Rajbhar's pivotal presence in the mid-field, where he snatched the ball from an opposition player and then selflessly set it up for Sunil, who scored with a fierce shot from an acute angle.

A pregnant woman in Malaysia has gifted a Lamborghini worth 2 million RM (US $476,564) to her husband as a reward for the long and sleepless nights he has to endure&nbsp;once she gives birth.

Mum-to-be Anes Ayuni Osman, 19, surprised her husband Weldan Zulkefli with a Lamborghini Huracan Evo, ahead of her confinement that will last for 100 days.

According to her family’s tradition in Kelantan, Anes Ayuni Osman will be observing a 100-day confinement period once her baby is born.

This will help her limit her movements to avoid any postpartum complications and help rebalance hormones.

During this time, her 20-year-old husband Zulkefli is expected to discharge all parental duties such as changing nappies and all the associated responsibilities.

Hence as a token of appreciation, Osman bought a car for Zulkefi. The whole moment was shared&nbsp;on TikTok, where the pregnant woman can be seen walking her 20-year-old, blindfolded husband into a car dealership to surprise him with the supercar wrapped in a big red bow.

Google Play has pulled down an app made by Malaysian apps with a view to help members of LGBT community 'back to nature'. The app was reportedly found to have violated the platform's guidelines.

The app was released for the first time in 2016.

Malaysia government's Islamic Development Department recently promoted the app on Twitter. The department said that the app helped members of LGBTI community return to a state of so-called purity.&nbsp;

The ministry also said that the app has an e-book that details a gay man who "abandon", "homosexual behaviour".

“Whenever an app is flagged to us, we investigate against our Play store policies and if violations are found we take appropriate action to maintain a trusted experience for all.” said Google in a statement sent to The Guardian.

The app is no longer available on Google Play Store.

No immediate reaction from the Malaysian government was reported.

There is a surmise that such step are being taken by the government for electoral gains since elections are just around the corner.

There is widespread discrimination against LGBT community. Some laws in the country prohibit same-sex relationships.

Experts have been quoted in the media as saying that demonisation of LGBT community is likely to increase as elections draw closer.&nbsp;

What happened to Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 and where did it go? There are hundreds of conspiracy theories that attempt to answer what might have happened to the Malaysia Airlines flight that was carrying 239 people and went missing above the Indian ocean in 2014.&nbsp;

The bombshell theory suggests that the MH370 was lost in a "murder-suicide plot". During the Sky News documentary "MH370: The Final Search", two air crash investigators made the claims, mentioning the suicide plot.&nbsp;

The loss of MH370 was no accident said John Cox, who is a top aviation safety investigator and retired pilot. The documentary was aired on Wednesday night.&nbsp;

The international passenger flight MH370 took off from Kuala Lumpur International Airport in Malaysia on 8 March 2014 and was flying toward its planned destination, Beijing Capital International Airport in China.&nbsp;

The crew last communicated with air traffic control (ATC) around 38 minutes after takeoff when the flight was over the South China Sea.&nbsp;

After that, the aircraft was lost from ATC radar screens, however, it was tracked by military radar for another hour. The aircraft was found deviating westwards from its planned flight path.&nbsp;

Commenting on the deviated path, Cox told Sky that the plane's twisting route indicated that the flight had been commandeered by one of the captains.&nbsp;

He told News Corp Australia as quoted by Daily Mail: "I think the evidence is pretty overwhelming that the aeroplane could not have flown the route it did with all the respective turns without that being a commandeered manoeuvre."&nbsp;

While pointing out the suspicious over the responsibility of First Officer and pilot for the flight's path, Cox said that the route had to have been flown by someone with expert knowledge.&nbsp;

MH370 captain Zaharie Ahmad Shah was flying the plane alongside First Officer Fariq Abdul Hamid.&nbsp;

Cox said that the aircraft's datalink system could have been disabled by Shah as he was the only one aboard with the knowledge and experience to do it.&nbsp;

However, he believed that his theory is unlikely to be proven because the Malay air crash probe requires certainty.&nbsp;

The theory is not entirely new as previously also, claims were made that the pilot&nbsp;tried to hijack the plane.&nbsp;

The disappearance of Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 is one of the greatest aviation mysteries.

Malaysia, China, and Australia called off a two-year, A$200 million underwater search in the southern Indian Ocean in January 2017 after finding no trace of the aircraft.&nbsp;

A second three-month search, led by US firm Ocean Infinity, ended similarly in May 2018.&nbsp;

Malaysia's coronavirus recovery council said on Tuesday it had recommended full reopening of borders March 1 onwards. Mandatory quarantine for travellers will by done away with as part of plans aimed at accelerating economic recovery. Malaysia has shut its borders since March 2020. It had frozen entry of foreign workers in order to try and contain the spread of coronavirus.

The recommendation comes as neighbours waive quarantine requirements to attract vaccinated tourists, including Thailand, the Philippines and Singapore.

Thailand on Monday said it was eyeing travel bubbles with Malaysia and China.

Muhyiddin Yassin, a former premier and chairperson of the National Recovery Council (NRC), a government advisory body, said travellers would have to undergo COVID-19 screening before departure and on arrival.

"This means tourists can visit, investors can enter... It means AirAsia can fly again, as an example," he told a news conference, referring to the Malaysia-based budget carrier.

At present, Malaysia allows quarantine-free entry to people from Singapore as part of a bilateral arrangement.

Daily coronavirus infections in Malaysia have surged in recent weeks to their highest in four months, driven by the Omicron variant.

It reported 13,944 new infections on Tuesday, adding to more than 2.9 million cases recorded overall, with over 32,000 deaths, among the highest fatality and infection rates in Asia per capita.

The majority of the cases were asymptomatic or mild due Malaysia's high vaccination rate, the health ministry said on Monday.

About 98% of Malaysia's adult population has received two doses of the vaccine and more than half a booster shot. About 89% of 12-17 year olds have been vaccinated and inoculations for children age 5-11 started last week.
