Gravitas: Anwar Ibrahim becomes Malaysia's Prime Minister

Malaysia's king is set to be 'kingmaker' in choosing PM. The weekend elections in Malaysia delivered a hung assembly. Political coalitions could not break the deadlock on government formation. Malaysian King search for PM comes to an end

Political analyst Dr Azmi Hassan views on why Malaysia's King is picking the next PM?

The weekend elections in Malaysia delivered a hung assembly. The political parties soon found themselves trying to manufacture coalitions to reach the magical majority mark of 112. However, King Al-Sultan Abdullah on Tuesday said he will pick the next prime minister after the warring parties could not break the deadlock. After the failure of coalition talks, the king's role in the formation of the next federal government has taken the centre stage. But who is the king and what role does he play in Malaysia's unique constitutional monarchy system? Read more: 'Let me take a decision soon': Malaysia King to call the shots after stalemate election Who is Malaysia's King Al-Sultan Abdullah? King Al-Sultan Abdullah is Malaysia's 16th monarch and ascended the throne in 2019 at the age of 59. He belongs to one of the royal families of the nine states which picks the king every five years — a system that was agreed upon in 1957 when Malaysia gained independence from the British colonialists. King Al-Sultan Abdullah is the ruler of the state of Pahang which is situated on Malaysia's east coast. As a king, Al-Sultan Abdullah is the head of the state and the commander of the armed forces. More importantly, he oversees key federal appointments, including the post of prime minister. Is the Malaysian king always the kingmaker? While King Al-Sultan Abdullah has a rather ceremonial role to play in the electoral choices, he has the power to appoint any lawmaker that he believes can amass the required majority. Rarely has a Malaysian king ever used this power to conjure a government and a prime minister. However, the political instability in the last three years has prompted the silver-haired Al-Sultan Abdullah to step up and call the shots. WATCH | Malaysia faces hung Parliament for first time in history after tight election race × In February 2020, he appointed Muhyiddin Yassin as the PM after Mahathir Mohamad was forced to resign following a bitter coalition infighting. A year later, the king appointed Ismail Sabri Yaakob as the new PM after asking the country's lawmakers to submit their preferred choice as the PM in a letter. On Tuesday, after opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim and former PM Muhyiddin Yassin could not gather the numbers, Al-Sultan Abdullah told reporters, "Let me make a decision soon." The King proposed the formation of a 'unity government', a proposal that was subsequently turned down by Muhyiddin. As many as 30 lawmakers from the Barisan Nasional alliance have been summoned by the monarch to meet him on Wednesday to determine who becomes the next PM. The last three years have been rather turbulent for Malaysia's political class and ordinary citizens. Rising inflation and global economic slowdown have only added to the woes and thus all eyes will be on Al-Sultan Abdullah to pick a candidate that can last the complete tenure. Malaysia Elections 2022: Government asks parties to form new coalition

Former prime minister of Malaysia Muhyiddin Yassin on Sunday (November 20) was able to secure backing from two political blocs. Recently concluded general election has thrown up a hung parliament. Muhyiddin may be getting support but he has not yet secured required majority.

Muhyiddin, of the Perikatan Nasional coalition, said he had won support from two regional blocs based in the island of Borneo. That would boost his alliance's seat tally from 73 to 101 - still short of the required 112 majority.

"I am confident I will obtain enough support from lawmakers that will enable me to be appointed by the king as Prime Minister," he said, without saying which other parties might back him.

Longtime opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim, whose Pakatan Harapan coalition won the most number of seats in the election with 82, is also racing to win support from other groups.

The inconclusive election saw Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob's Barisan Nasional alliance suffer its worst electoral defeat ever, winning just 30 of the 178 seats it ran for.

It prolongs political uncertainty in the Southeast Asian nation, which has seen three prime ministers in as many years, at a time of slowing economic growth and rising inflation.

The political slugfest has continued even when the former prime minister and PN chairman Muhyiddin Yassin on Sunday suggested he had secured backing from two political blocs. Malaysia's political slugfest drags on as coalitions race to reach the 'majority' number

Malaysia has stumbled into fresh political turmoil after a tightly contested general election delivered a hung parliament for the first time in its history.

Malaysia faces hung parliament for first time in history

Former Malaysia prime minister Mahathir Mohamad on Saturday (November 19) lost his parliamentary seat. This has likely ended the career of 97-year-old Mohamad who is widely recognised to be Asia's most enduring politicians. In a five-way fight in his long-held constituency of Langkawi, Mahathir came fourth, according to Malaysia's election commission.

It was Mahathir's first electoral defeat in more than half a century.

Of the 177 of 222 parliamentary seats counted, the Election Commission said Anwar's multi-ethnic Pakatan Harapan coalition was leading with 61 seats, while Muhyiddin's Perikatan Nasional alliance won 60 seats. Ismail's Barisan coalition got 24.

Mahathir held the Guinness World Record for being the "world's oldest current prime minister" when he became premier for a second time in 2018 just two months shy of his 93rd birthday.

Visibly slowed by age but still looking healthy, he ran this time around under his own Homeland Fighters' Party and had laughed off suggestions he should retire, telling reporters before the election he had a "good chance" of winning.

"I'm still standing around and talking to you, I think, making reasonable answers," Mahathir said.

He added his party would not form any alliances with parties that are led by "crooks or jailbirds" -- an apparent reference to the United Malays National Organisation (UMNO), the party of jailed former prime minister Najib Razak.

Mahathir has been criticised for ruling the Southeast Asian nation with an iron fist from 1981 to 2003 but is also hailed for helping transform the country from a sleepy backwater into one of the world's top exporters of high-tech goods.

Mahathir's long leadership provided political stability and he gained the title of "Father of Modern Malaysia" as he oversaw the construction of highways and industrial parks in the 1980s and 1990s.

Malaysia: 97-year-old Mahathir loses election, tastes first defeat in more than 50 years

Muhyiddin Yassin, former prime minister of Malaysia, said on Sunday that he had won enough votes in the general election to form a government, despite the fact that the Election Commission's most recent figures indicated a hung parliament.

Muhyiddin declared he would cooperate with any party in order to amass the required number of votes to establish the government.

Early results from the Election Commission showed that Anwar Ibrahim, the head of Malaysia's opposition, had a slim lead in the general election on Saturday, even though he and his main rivals fell far short of the simple majority required to form the government.

The results showed that Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob's current coalition had the worst performance of the three main competitors, losing territory in previously held strongholds, while former premier Muhyiddin Yassin came in a close second early on.

On Saturday, a record number of Malaysians cast ballots to put an end to the country's current period of political unrest, which has seen three prime ministers govern it in as many years while the economy has slowed and the COVID-19 pandemic has spread.

However, it appeared unlikely that a clear winner would emerge from the election as none of the top three candidates came close to obtaining the majority required to establish a government.
