Malayasian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said on Monday (April 3) that the country was ready to negotiate with China over maritime dispute in the South China Sea. His comments came after a report by a think tank that Chinese boats were patrolling close to Malaysian offshore gas project.

The issue was raised between Anwar and Chinese President Xi Jinping in China last week as Malaysia has energy exploration projects in the area, Anwar said at an address on Monday at the prime minister's department.

Anwar did not specify which dispute or which area of the South China Sea.

"In that area there is a similar claim from China. I said (to them) that as a small country that needs oil and gas resources, we have to continue. But if the condition is that there must be negotiation, then we are ready to negotiate," Anwar said, without elaborating.

China claims almost entirety of South China Sea citing ancient facts. In doing so, it has waded into dispute into other countries who have coastlines on South China Sea. About USD 3 trillions worth of ship-borne trade passes through South China Sea annually

China claims about 90% of the South China Sea via a U-shaped "nine-dash line" on its maps that cuts through the exclusive economic zones (EEZ) of five Southeast Asian countries.

An international arbitration ruled in 2016 that the line was invalid. But Beijing does not recognise the ruling.

Malaysian state oil company Petronas operates oil and gas fields in the South China Sea within Malaysia's EEZ and has in recent years had several encounters with Chinese vessels.

Those include a month-long standoff between a Chinese survey ship and an oil exploration vessel contracted by Petronas in 2020, which China had said was conducting normal activities.

The U.S. think tank, the Asia Maritime Transparency Initiative (AMTI), in a report last week said a Chinese coast guard vessel was for the past month operating near Petronas' Kasawari gas development off Malaysia's Sarawak state, and came as close as 1.5 miles of the project. A Malaysian navy ship was in the area at the same time, AMTI said.

Malaysia ready to negotiate with Beijing over South China Sea: PM

In a landmark decision, the Malaysian parliament on Monday (April 3) approved legal reforms to remove the mandatory death penalty. In the sweeping legal reforms that were passed, the parliament also cut down the number of offences punishable by death and abolished natural-life prison sentences.

The amendments that were passed will now provide alternatives to the death penalty including whipping and imprisonment of between 30 to 40 years, news agency Reuters reported. All previous provisions that call for imprisonment for the duration of the offender’s natural life will be replaced.

The country has had a moratorium on executions since 2018.

The agency report also mentioned that life imprisonment sentences, which were defined by Malaysian law as a fixed term of 30 years, will be retained.

Deputy law minister Ramkarpal Singh said capital punishment was an irreversible punishment that had not been an effective deterrent for crime.

In a landmark decision, Malaysia scraps mandatory death penalty, natural-life prison terms

An 83-year-old woman in Malaysia had to pay for a pufferfish delicacy with her life, while her husband continues to be under treatment in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). The incident reportedly took place in Johor province, whose territory begins about 280 km southeast of Kuala Lumpur.

The couple's daughter, Ng Ai Lee told a Malaysian media outlet that her father purchased the puffer fish from a local shop.

"My parents have been buying fish from the same fishmonger for many years, so my father did not think twice about it," Ng AI Lee was quoted as saying by the New York Post.

"He would not have knowingly bought something so deadly to eat and put their lives in danger," she added.

The couple's daughter further said that she is prepared for the worst as far as her father's critical condition goes.

"I am prepared for the worst because the doctor told us that even if he is able to pull through the ordeal, he might not be the same any more, due to his old age," she added.

Malaysian woman dies, husband critical after consuming toxic pufferfish delicacy

Top court in Malaysia on Friday (March 31) dismissed jailed former prime minister Najib Razak's bid to review his corruption conviction for the multi-billion dollar scandal at state fund 1MDB. The court decision has ended Najib's efforts to overturn the guilty verdict he received.

Najib became the first Malaysian premier to be imprisoned after Malaysia's Federal Court upheld a guilty verdict and 12-year prison sentence handed down to him by a lower court.

The 69-year-old Najib can no longer challenge the conviction. But he has applied for a royal pardon. If it comes through, it could see him released from jail before his 12-year term is fully served.

Federal Court Judge Vernon Ong said a five-member panel voted 4-1 to dismiss Najib's application to review the conviction.

There was no miscarriage of justice in the top court's decision last year, he said, adding that a review was granted only in "very limited and exceptional circumstances".

"In the final analysis, and having regard to all circumstances, we are constrained to say that the applicant (Najib) was the author of his own misfortunes," Ong said.

Najib's lawyer Shafee Abdullah said there was a possibility of another action in court due to the dissenting view of one judge.

"As a result of the minority judgement, there is an avenue that is open," Shafee told reporters. He declined to say what action his client would pursue.

At least four people have died and more than 40,000 have been evacuated in the past week or so in Malaysia’s southern Johor state, said officials on Saturday (March 4). Meanwhile, rescue efforts are underway from floodwaters caused by unprecedented torrential rains which have swept through several states in the country.

So far, the officials have set up more than 200 relief shelters for those displaced, as per the national disaster management agency. The local police also confirmed that at least four people have died since Wednesday including an incident where a man trapped in his vehicle was swept away by the rising floodwaters. Nearly 41,000 people from six states have been affected by the recent rains and subsequent floods.

While the weather phenomenon is common in Malaysia during the monsoon season which is between October and March the heavy rains this year have left many scrambling for shelter, particularly in the southern state of Johor neighbouring Singapore, which has also witnessed heavy torrential rains since February.

“We used to always prepare for the rainy season in November and December. Each household had a boat, but now with the unpredictable weather, it seems that we are not prepared and it's become chaotic,” a 57-year-old resident in the Johor town of Yong Peng, Noor Saad, told Reuters.

Malaysia: At least four dead, more than 40,000 evacuated amid heavy rains, floods

Heavy rains continue to barter Malaysia as day-to-day life continues to be paralyzed due to the incessant rainfall. The country has been plagued with continuous rain since November last year in which four people have lost their lives.

Malaysian towns and villages have been inundated by floodwaters following heavy rains, displacing approximately 26,000 people as of Thursday (March 2).

The southern Johor state is the worst-hit, with almost 25,000 people being relocated to relief camps in schools and community halls.

After Wednesday's non-stop rain inundated the region, five more states experienced flooding as well.

The Meteorological Department reported that the nation is currently going through its sixth episode of non-stop heavy rain since the annual monsoon season began in November, and warned that it may last until April.

In December, thousands of people were also evacuated due to flooding.

Malaysian activists on Thursday criticised the government's decision of banning three books for allegedly promoting the "LGBTQ lifestyle," saying that this step would further damage gay and transgender rights. The Malaysian home ministry in its statement released on Tuesday said that "Jacob's Room to Choose," a children's book about gender expression was banned in January. Two other children's books, "The Tale of Steven," and the Malay-language title, "Aku" were also banned, AFP reported.

Justifying its measure, the ministry said that its objective was to "prevent the spread of elements that are harmful to morality in the community."

Malaysia grew at the quickest pace in over two decades in 2022, making it the fastest-growing economy in Asia, as the pent-up demand helped the nation's GDP grow to 8.7 per cent, the highest level since 2000, data from the Bank Negara Malaysia and the Department of Statistics showed, Bloomberg reported.

In October and December period, the economy rose higher than the expected seven per cent than a year ago, with the help of domestic demand.

Rescuers in Malaysia have called off the search for bodies after a landslide blanketed a campsite located just north of the capital Kuala Lumpur killed 31 people, officials said on Saturday. Speaking to news agency AFP, senior rescue official Hafisham Mohamad Noor said that the teams "found the last body, that of a boy."

"We found the last body, that of a boy. We will end our search and rescue operations," Noor said.

The campsite was located at an organic farm near Batang Kali in Selangor state. The landslide occurred in the early hours of December 16 when 92 campers, including dozens of children, were asleep.

The landslide came down from an estimated height of 30 metres above the campsite, and covered an area of about one acre, the fire and rescue department’s state director said on December 17, CNN reported.

Landslides are common in Malaysia post heavy rainfall which is regular at the end of the year. However, the campsite area did not see any heavy rainfall on the night of the disaster.

Nearly 700 personnel from different government agencies and the emergency services, trawled through mud and debris to search for survivors and bodies. All those killed in the landslide were Malaysian nationals. The victims included 11 children and 14 women.

On the other hand, 61 campers were rescued by the teams.

Authorities had earlier said that the organic farm did not have a licence to run a campsite and its operators will be punished if they broke the law.

Malaysia Prime Minister Ibrahim Anwar wins motion of confidence in parliament

Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim on Monday won the confidence vote in parliament as he successfully cemented his mandate one month after the election’s inconclusive result forced him to join hands with his former political opponents’ corruption-tainted party.

Speaker of the parliament’s lower house Johari Abdul said that the support was affirmed via voice vote on Monday, with members favouring the leadership of Anwar drowning out the opposition.

Anwar said that, in the 222-seat legislature, he had 148 members’ support which gives him a majority of two-thirds required to pass reforms after the general elections that took place on November 19. Anwar’s close ally Johari received 148 votes as he got elected for the speaker’s post on Monday.

According to analysts, the government’s strong majority should help Malaysia gain political stability, after years of unstable governance and four changes in leadership.

In the elections, the Pakatan Harapan (Alliance of Hope) coalition of PM Anwar Ibrahim clinched victory over 82 seats, leading ahead of the rivals but fell short of the required majority for the formation of the government.

The results created a situation of political stalemate, as the rival party headed by former prime minister Muhyiddin Yassin claimed that they have received support from the majority, which led to the intervention of Malaysia's king.
