Ten years after the tragic incident, relatives of passengers on Sunday (Mar 3) pushed for a new search as they spoke of enduring grief and the struggle to find closure.

Authorities did not find any trace of the wreck, besides the few bits of debris that washed up on an island in the Indian Ocean.

The aircraft, which was headed from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing, was carrying 227 passengers and 12 crew members and all on board were presumed dead in the still-continuing aviation mystery.

In January 2017, the official search for the missing jet was suspended and a private six-month search conducted a year later also turned up nothing.

Malaysia's top court on Friday declared unconstitutional more than a dozen Islamic laws enacted by the state of Kelantan, in a landmark decision that could affect similar Sharia laws in other parts of the Muslim-majority country.

Malaysia has a dual-track legal system with Islamic criminal and family laws applicable to Muslims running alongside secular laws. Islamic laws are enacted by state legislatures while secular laws are passed by Malaysia's parliament.

A nine-member Federal Court bench, in an 8-1 decision, declared 16 laws in Kelantan's sharia criminal code "void and invalid", including provisions criminalising sodomy, incest, gambling, sexual harassment, and the desecration of places of worship.

Chief Justice Tengku Maimun Tuan Mat, who delivered the majority judgement, said the northeastern state had no authority to enact the laws, as the subject matter was covered under parliament's law-making powers.

"The essence of those provisions are matters under the federal list, which only parliament has the power to make," she said.

Kelantan, which lies just south of Thailand in Malaysia's north, is governed by Parti Islam Se-Malaysia (PAS) which has advocated for a stricter interpretation of Islamic law.

PAS has seen increased popularity in recent years amid growing Islamic conservatism among Malaysia's majority ethnic Malay Muslims, and is seen as a challenge for Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim's multi-ethnic ruling coalition. PAS holds more seats in parliament than any other party.

The constitutional challenge was filed by a Kelantanese lawyer and her daughter against laws covering sharia offences that were passed by the state and came into force in 2021.

The case has sparked uproar among some conservative Muslim groups, who fear the challenge could undermine Islam or the sharia courts in Malaysia.

Security was tight around the court complex in Malaysia's administrative capital, Putrajaya, as about 1,000 demonstrators gathered outside to protest the case. They prayed and chanted "God is great" as the judgement was delivered.

Justice Tengku Maimun said the case did not have anything to do with the position of Islam in the country, only on whether the Kelantan legislature had acted beyond its powers.

Malaysia has halved the sentence of disgraced former Prime Minister Najib Razak, who was convicted and sent to jail for 12 years for corruption in the multibillion-dollar 1MDB scandal.

Najib Razak's jail will become the first Malaysian PM to be jailed

A Malaysian pardons board on Friday said it has decided to halve the jail sentence of former Prime Minister Najib Razak, who was convicted of graft and money laundering related to the multibillion-dollar 1MDB scandal.

Najib, who is serving a 12-year jail term, will be released in August 2028 and fines imposed on him reduced to 50 million ringgit ($10.59 million) from 210 million ringgit, the board's secretariat said in a statement.

The board, chaired by Malaysia's king, did not give a reason for halving Najib's sentence in its statement on Friday.

Najib was convicted for graft linked to state fund 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB), from which U.S. and Malaysian investigators estimate $4.5 billion was stolen and more than $1 billion channeled to accounts linked to the former premier.

The billionaire sultan who rules Malaysia’s Johor state, Ibrahim Iskandar, was sworn in as the country’s new king on Wednesday (Jan 31) under a unique rotating monarchy system. The 65-year-old monarch is ascending to the throne with a staggering $5.7 billion empire which includes a fleet of private jets, hundreds of cars, and yes his own private army.

About Sultan Ibrahim

Sultan Ibrahim is one of the richest men in the country, with his family assets' readily available valuations pegged at at least $5.7 billion, according to an estimate by Bloomberg. But the number is expected to be higher.

Notably, he will be the first king from the state of Johor on the throne of Malaysia since the late 1980s. While Sultan Ibrahim is the ruler of one state of Malaysia, his empire extends far beyond the nation’s boundaries, including his array of ventures in sectors like real estate, mining, telecommunications and even palm oil.

The monarch owns over 300 luxury cars, including one that was reportedly gifted by Adolf Hitler. Sultan Ibrahim also has a fleet of private jets, including a gold-and-blue Boeing 737 and is also the only ruler with a private army.

The private army was a condition agreed upon for the state to join modern-day Malaysia after the country gained independence from Britain in 1957.

Malaysia’s new king sworn in

Sultan Ibrahim ascended to the throne after taking his oath of office at the palace and signed the instrument of the proclamation in a ceremony attended by other royal families, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and other lawmakers in the capital city of Kuala Lumpur.

A separate coronation ceremony for the 17th king of Malaysia will take place later. The head of Malaysia’s southernmost state will begin his five-year term, given the country’s unique constitutional monarchy where hereditary royals of nine states take turns as the nation’s king.

Malaysia is the only country in the world where such a system of rotational monarchy exists. However, out of Malaysia’s 13 states, only nine have royal families.

While the king’s role in Malaysia is largely ceremonial, the monarch is the nominal head of the government and armed forces and is highly regarded as the protector of Islam and Malay tradition.

Sultan Ibrahim has indicated that he will maintain a hands-on approach and told the Singapore Straits Times, in an interview, that he would not waste five years on the throne as a “puppet king” but focus on fighting graft and deepening unity in the country.

Notably, the 65-year-old is taking the throne at a time when Malaysia is facing a corruption crackdown which has included some of the most prominent political personalities in the country.

Malaysia is exploring the possibility of initiating legal proceedings against foreign banks implicated in the massive 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) corruption scandal, according to Johari Abdul Ghani, the chairman of the 1MDB asset recovery task force.

As per a Reuters report, Ghani did not disclose the names of the foreign banks but asserted that they failed to conduct adequate due diligence before facilitating fund transfers linked to the sovereign fund. The 1MDB scandal, involving an estimated $4.5 billion misappropriation, has ensnared figures such as former Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak, Goldman Sachs staff, and officials at the highest levels. Najib is currently serving a 12-year jail sentence for his role in the scandal.

"The 1MDB task force is firmly committed to addressing the 1MDB matter transparently and holding all parties accountable," emphasised Ghani in a statement.

In a related development, Ghani disclosed that Malaysia responded on November 8 to an arbitration request from Goldman Sachs. The two parties are presently in the process of agreeing on a procedural timetable. Goldman Sachs had previously agreed to a $3.9 billion settlement in 2020 to resolve Malaysia's criminal probe into its involvement in the 1MDB scandal.

However, disputes have arisen over the settlement terms, particularly regarding an interim payment clause. Goldman insists on an interim payment if Malaysia fails to recover at least $500 million from the firm by August 2022. This discrepancy has led to legal actions, with Goldman suing Malaysia in a British court, alleging a breach of the settlement agreement. Malaysia vehemently denies these allegations.

McDonald's Malaysia on Friday (Dec 29) sued a pro-Palestinian group over allegedly calling people to boycott firms supporting Israel.

The popular fast-food chain sued the group for $1.3 million.

It released a statement saying that the civil suit it filed against BDS Malaysia was aimed at safeguarding its "rights and interests in accordance with the law".

McDonald's said it "does not support nor condone the current conflict in the Middle East".

"While we understand and respect that the act of boycotting is an individual decision, we believe that it should be based on facts and not false allegations," McDonald's said.

McDonald's has sought six million ringgit in damages for alleged defamation, according to a copy of the legal document seen by news agency AFP.

BDS Malaysia shared a post on social media platform X saying, "We categorically deny this" alleged defamation.

BDS Malaysia is part of the global Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions movement, which was launched by Palestinian civil society organisations in the year 2005.

The campaign advocates political and economic action against Israel over its treatment of Palestinians.

BDS Malaysia heightened its call for Malaysians to boycott Western brands, including McDonald's, KFC and Zara, in its response to Israel's counter-offensive in Gaza as it alleges these brands are "complicit with Israeli atrocities towards Palestinians".

Israel launched a counter-offensive in Gaza after Hamas' Oct 7 assault on Israel, which claimed the lives of about 1,140 people, mostly civilians, as per news agency AFP's tally based on Israeli figures.

The Palestinian militant group also held approximately 250 people hostage with some of them still trapped in war zone and some believed to be dead.

Israel's relentless military campaign since then has killed at least 21,507 people, mostly women and children, according to the health ministry in Hamas-ruled Gaza.

(With inputs from agencies)

Malaysia on Wednesday (Dec 20) imposed a ban on Israeli-flagged cargo ships from docking at its ports in response to the ongoing war in Gaza.

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim himself announced the decision, singling out ZIM, Israel’s largest shipping firm.

The PM added that the ships on their way to Israel will also be barred from loading cargo at the Malaysian ports.

The decision has further raised concerns regarding the impact of the Israel-Hamas war on global shipping amidst increasing attacks on cargo ships in the Red Sea by the Iran-backed Houthi group.

Anwar Ibrahim’s statement

The Malaysian PM said that the action was being taken in response to what he said “Israel’s actions that ignore basic humanitarian principles and violate international law through the ongoing massacre and brutality against Palestinians”.

Malaysia “also decided to no longer accept ships using the Israeli flag to dock in the country” and ban “any ship on its way to Israel from loading cargo in Malaysian ports”.

“Both of these restrictions are effective immediately,” the prime minister said.

Faced with escalating tensions and potential sanctions, China is seeking Malaysian expertise for assembling high-end chips, particularly graphics processing units (GPUS).

China turns to Malaysia for chip assembly amid US Sanction concerns

In a move to mitigate potential risks associated with US sanctions on China's chip industry, an increasing number of Chinese semiconductor design companies are exploring partnerships with Malaysian firms for the assembly of high-end chips, particularly graphics processing units (GPUs), Reuters reported.

The sources told Reuters that these collaborations focus solely on the assembly aspect, steering clear of US restrictions, with contracts already finalised in some cases.

The heightened restrictions by Washington to limit China's access to advanced GPUs, crucial for artificial intelligence and military applications, have left smaller Chinese semiconductor design firms struggling to secure adequate advanced packaging services domestically. As a result, some are turning to Malaysia for these critical services.

While US restrictions do not currently apply to advanced chip packaging services, Chinese firms fear potential future curbs on exports to China in this domain. Malaysia, a key player in the semiconductor supply chain, is viewed as an ideal alternative for Chinese chip firms looking to diversify assembly locations outside China.

Unisem, majority-owned by China's Huatian Technology, has reported increased business and inquiries from Chinese clients. The chairman, John Chia, underlined the legitimacy and compliance of Unisem's business dealings.

Chinese chip design firms find Malaysia attractive due to its perceived positive relationship with China, affordability, skilled workforce, and advanced equipment. Chia acknowledged that most of Unisem's customers in Malaysia are from the US.

Despite potential concerns over US reactions, Chia asserted that Unisem's business dealings are fully legitimate and compliant.

Malaysia, currently contributing 13 per cent to the global market for semiconductor packaging, assembly, and testing, aims to increase its share to 15 per cent by 2030. Chinese chip firms, including Xfusion and StarFive, have announced plans to expand in Malaysia, attracted by the country's incentives and established infrastructure.

In a bid to minimise geopolitical risks, other countries such as Vietnam and India are also actively seeking to expand their presence in chip manufacturing services, providing alternative options for clients looking to navigate US-Sino uncertainties.

A herd of wild elephants in Malaysia caused chaos on a major highway, trampling a car after it collided with a baby elephant. The white Perodua Axia, driven by a 48-year-old man with his wife and 23-year-old son, hit the elephant calf while navigating a left bend on the highway from Penang to Terengganu.

The collision led to the calf falling to the ground, prompting the rest of the herd, consisting of five elephants, to rush towards the car and trample it. Photos show extensive damage to the vehicle's front and sides, with all windows smashed and side doors caved in.

While it remains unclear if the family was inside the car during the incident, authorities reported no deaths or serious injuries. The herd left the scene after the calf regained footing, reported CNN.

The European Commission said it had sent formal requests for information to Meta and TikTok respectively. The commission said that the request to Meta was related "to the dissemination and amplification of illegal content and disinformation" around the Hamas-Israel conflict. It released a separate statement saying that it wanted to know the measures taken by short-form video hosting service TikTok against "the spreading of terrorist and violent content and hate speech". Malaysia is gearing up to combat deteriorating air quality by attempting to 'make it rain' through cloud seeding.

The country, as per its Department of Environment, has been facing the recurring threat of air pollution, due to which it is even considering school closures.

What is causing the drop in air quality?

According to Reuters, the deteriorating air quality is caused by forest fires, primarily from land clearing activities for palm oil and pulp and paper plantations in neighbouring Indonesia.

Last week, Kuala Lumpur blamed fires in Indonesia for the pollution. The neighbouring nation, however, denied any smoke crossing its borders into Malaysia.

The Malaysian department earlier had said that a regional meteorological agency identified nearly 250 "hotspots," that were indicative of fires on Sumatra and Borneo islands in Indonesia. However, none were detected within Malaysia.

Burning throat and other health risks

Almost every dry season, thick smoke blankets the skies over the region, posing health risks and concerns for the tourism and aviation industries.

Wan Abdul Latiff Wan Jaffar, director of the Department of Environment in Malaysia recently, in a statement, reported a decline in air quality, particularly in the western part of Peninsular Malaysia. He said that in total, 11 areas recorded unhealthy Air Pollution Index (API) readings.

To alleviate the situation, the nation will use methods, including cloud seeding and other measures to combat pollution. These methods will be initiated when API readings exceed 150 for more than 24 hours, announced Wan Abdul Latiff Wan Jaffar.

Furthermore, schools and kindergartens will be required to stop all outdoor activities when API readings reach 100. They will be closed when the API reaches 200.

Environmental organisation Greenpeace has called on countries in the region to enact legislation to hold plantation companies accountable for causing air pollution.

Heng Kiah Chun, regional campaign strategist for Greenpeace Southeast Asia, emphasised the need for a domestic transboundary haze act and said that enabling it "is necessary to act as a deterrent, especially as there are bad apples in the industry."
