A large Halloween gathering attended by the LGBT community was disrupted by Islamic religious police in Malaysia, who then detained 20 people for allegedly inciting vice and cross-dressing, activists claimed on Sunday.

The raid in Kuala Lumpur was described as "traumatising and harrowing" by activist Numan Afifi, who was one of those detained at the event.

"About 40 religious officers backed by the police came into the venue with some 1,000 participants, and they stopped the music and dance," he told AFP.

Numan said authorities divided party-goers into two groups -- Muslims and followers of other faiths.

Leonardo DiCaprio will soon be part of a money laundering trial. The actor will be among 72 witnesses for former Fugees member Prakazrel 'Pras' Michel's case.

In 2019, one of the founding members of the 1990s hip-hop group Michel was charged in a campaign finance conspiracy that took place during the 2012 US presidential election.

A four-count indictment accused Michel of conspiring with fugitive Malaysian financier Low Taek Jho to create and conceal foreign campaign contributions. He is alleged to have used straw donors to give campaign contributions to a US presidential candidate, who is not named in the case but is being referred to as Candidate A.

Leonardo DiCaprio features in a list of witnesses that the US Department of Justice has created related to the case.

Michel is faced with a separate civil forfeiture complaint accusing him of a scheme to try to get the department to drop an investigation into embezzlement from a Malaysian investment fund. The rapper has denied any wrongdoing in that case.
The embezzlement from the fund, known as 1MDB, has become a political scandal in Malaysia.

The money was allegedly used to pay for jewellery and luxury art and even helped finance several Hollywood films including 'The Wolf of Wall Street'.

In 2018, the Justice Department announced charges against Jho Low and two former Goldman Sachs bankers in a money laundering and bribery scheme that pilfered money from the fund, created to spur economic development projects in that country.

Other witnesses listed for trial include former White House chief of staff John Kelly, former deputy national security adviser Matt Pottinger, casino mogul Steven Wynn and more are included out of the 72 participants.

Former Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad has announced that he will contest in general elections which are to be held next month but did not clarify on whether he will take the Prime Minister office once again or not.

Malaysia: Former PM Mahathir Mohamad announces candidacy from Langkawi island seat

Former Malaysian prime minister Mahathir Mohamad said on Tuesday (October 11) that he will contest in the general elections expected next month to defend his seat.

There's no indication whether or not the 97-year-old would consider becoming the prime minister for a third time if his political alliance wins.

While addressing a news conference, Mahathir said: "We have not decided who will be prime minister because the prime minister candidate is only relevant if we win."

Mahathir says he is willing to work with anyone to defeat UMNO.

Who is Mahathir Mohamad?

Mahathir Mohamad is a stalwart in the Asian political arena. Despite his age and a health scare this year, his willingness to defend his seat is quite commendable.

As Mahathir said, the decision on prime minister candidate is not taken yet. He said it depends on the victory of his political alliance. It's not sure unless he confirms, but if he ends up being the candidate, he would be the oldest-ever candidate for the post.

Mahathir was Malaysia's fourth and seventh prime minister. He served as PM for the longest period of time in the nation for a total of 24 years, from July 1981 to October 2003 and then from May 2018 to March 2020. Before that, he served as deputy prime minister and in other cabinet positions.

Mahathir's political career has spanned more than 75 years. He joined protests opposing citizenship policies for non-Malays, formed the Malaysian United Indigenous Party in 2016, then formed Homeland Fighters Party in 2020 and Gerakan Tanah Air in 2022.

Earlier, he represented Kota Setar Selatan from April 1964 to May 1969, Kubang Pasu from August 1974 to March 2004, and Langkawi since May 2018.

On Monday, the Malaysian Prime Minister, Ismail Sabri Yaakob announced that the Parliament will be dissolved. This move has paved the way for snap elections which is a year earlier ahead of the country’s deadline for general elections.

According to sources, the announcement comes amid growing pressure from Ismail’s party United Malays National Organization, but those colleagues loyal to Umno president Zahid Hamidi. Reportedly, they want the voting to be held as early as possible since the beginning of this year.

"I had an audience with the Yang di-Pertuan Agong (paramount ruler) yesterday afternoon…He has consented to dissolving Parliament on Monday in accordance to Article 40 (2)(b) and Article 55(2) of the Federal Constitution," said Datuk Seri Ismail.

UMNO is Malaysia’s biggest party in the ruling coalition and has been feuding with the allies and wants to win the upcoming elections alone, sources said. The dissolution was expected to happen sometime this week as the PM met with Sultan Abdullah Ahmad Shah, at least twice last week between Thursday and Sunday, said the report.

Malaysia follows a constitutional monarchy and the monarch has absolute authority over whether they would consent to the dissolution of Parliament or not, after which voters must cast their ballots within 60 days. Therefore, an early election can be expected by early November.

The early November date for the elections is chosen to avoid the clash with Malaysia’s end-of-the-year monsoon season which has resulted in devastating floods over the past years. On Sunday, the country's monarch Sultan Abdullah warned citizens to “brace themselves and make preparations to face possible weather phenomena”.

According to a report by The Straits Times, UMNO leadership and the Barisan Nasional (BN) coalition which it leads are set to meet on late Monday and Tuesday, which will give them a head start on preparations for the upcoming campaign trail when no other party is ready. On the other hand, UMNO’s main opposition Pakatan Harapan (PH) will only be finalising their candidates and manifesto by October 29, said the report.

Meanwhile, Perikatan Nasional (PN), the largest bloc in PM Ismail's governing coalition up until last week, were lobbying the Palace to dissolve the Parliament until the monsoon passes early next year.

Notably, together the PN and PH control six state governments and have indicated that they would not follow even if the federal legislature is dissolved. Furthermore, they will hold state elections only next year, ahead of the September deadline, said the report. Therefore, only three UMNO-controlled states will have their state elections coincide with the Parliamentary elections.

Malaysia: PM dissolves Parliament, calls for snap elections

Malaysian Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob confirmed on Tuesday that he be meeting with King Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri'ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah, without specifying the agenda of the meeting which is likely to be held on Thursday.

Malaysia PM Yaakob says decision to dissolve parliament is his prerogative

Malaysian Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob said he could propose a date for the dissolution of parliament in a Thursday meeting with the country's monarch, though the palace played down the meeting as a regular weekly discussion.

The palace said the two held a "routine" meeting to discuss government matters. Its statement did not mention dissolution. Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob's office did not have an immediate comment.

An election is not due until September 2023, but Ismail has been under pressure from some factions of his ruling coalition to hold the vote earlier for a stronger mandate and due to infighting.

If he dissolves parliament soon, the election would come just as the economy starts to feel the pinch of rising costs and a global slowdown. It would also coincide with the year-end monsoon season and floods, which could reduce voter turnout.

Ismail met King Al-Sultan Abdullah at the national palace at 4 p.m. (0800 GMT) and left about 45 minutes later.

Before the meeting, Ismail said he would mainly discuss cabinet matters with the king and that a date for dissolution of parliament would be submitted only if there was time, the Bernama news agency said.

"Still unsure whether it will be brought up. If it takes too long to discuss cabinet issues, it will be about cabinet only," Ismail said.

His government is set to present its 2023 budget in parliament on Friday, the finance ministry has said, putting to rest some speculation that a dissolution could be announced before that.

An election must be held within 60 days of dissolution.

Malaysia is a constitutional monarchy and the king typically acts on the prime minister's advice. But the king does wield certain discretionary powers, including withholding consent for the dissolution of parliament.

MIXED VIEWS IN RULING COALITION

Last week, Ismail's party, the United Malays National Organisation (UMNO), the biggest in the ruling coalition, said the premier would seek the king's consent to dissolve parliament this year, spurring speculation that Ismail could call polls any day.

However, Ismail's coalition is not unanimous on the timing of an election.

Many alliance partners have cited economic problems, such as the rising cost of living and the anticipated year-end floods, as reasons not to hold a vote this year.

Malaysia was hit late last year by unusually heavy rain and floods that caused damage of about 6 billion ringgit ($1.3 billion).

Some cabinet ministers wrote to the monarch this week asking him not to hold elections this year due to flood risks, according to domestic media.

Malaysia's former first lady gets 10 years in prison. A goodbye to Birkin handbags and extravagant lifestyle?

Just days after her husband was sentenced to prison for corruption, Rosmah Mansor, the wife of former prime minister Najib Razak, appeared in court on Thursday to hear the verdict on the accusation against her of soliciting bribes in exchange for government contracts.

On the other hand, her husband Najib started serving a 12-year prison sentence last week in a multibillion-dollar fraud scandal (1MBD).

After Najib’s administration was ousted in 2018, he and his wife, who faced criticism for her extravagant lifestyle, were at the centre of anti-corruption campaigns.

Rosmah, 70, pleaded not guilty to three of the charges against her for soliciting and recovering bribes to help a company secure a $279 million solar power project from the government when her spouse was in power. The charges against the first lady carry penalties of up to 20 years in prison and a fine equal to five times the amount of the bribe, Reuters reported.

As per the prosecution, Rosmah received a bribe of 187.5 million ringgit and was given another 6.5 million ringgit by a business representative. However, in response to this, the latter said that various government officials, including her former assistant, are trying to set her up.

In a separate case, the first lady is also charged with 17 money laundering and tax evasion cases for receiving 7.1 million ringgits.

The former prime minister also remains on trial for four other corruption-related trials.

In the 1MBD scandal, the US department alleges that $4.5 billion was stolen, nearly $1 billion of which was sent to Najib’s personal bank accounts. The department further stated that some of the stolen funds from 1MBD were used to buy jewellery, including a $27 million pink diamond.

Malaysia’s former first lady Rosmah appears in court for corruption trial, verdict to be announced soon

The wife of ex-Malaysian prime minister Najib Razak has been sentenced to ten years in prison on each of three bribery charges. It comes days after her husband began serving a 12-year jail sentence for corruption.

Malaysia's former PM Najib Razak's wife gets 10 years jail for corruption

A Malaysian court on Thursday sentenced Rosmah Mansor, the wife of former Prime Minister Najib Razak, to a decade in prison for seeking and receiving bribes in exchange for government contracts, just days after her husband was jailed for corruption.

The couple has been the focus of multiple graft investigations since Najib's surprise election defeat in 2018, when voters' anger over a separate, multi-billion dollar corruption scandal ended his nine years in power.

A flamboyant figure by Najib's side, Rosmah was widely scorned in Malaysia for her extravagant lifestyle and penchant for Hermes Birkin bags, and faced repeated questions over her influence in government matters.

Rosmah will also have to pay a fine of 970 million ringgit ($216.45 million) - a record amount in Malaysia's history - over three bribery charges, Kuala Lumpur High Court Judge Mohamed Zaini Mazlan said, adding that the prosecution proved their case beyond a reasonable doubt.

She will remain free on bail pending appeals to higher courts.

Rosmah, dressed in a yellow baju kurung - a traditional Malaysian long blouse and skirt - and matching headscarf, addressed the judge tearfully immediately after the verdict.

"I must admit that I'm very sad with what happened today," she said. "Nobody saw me taking the money, nobody saw me counting the money.... but if that's the conclusion, I leave it to God."

Her lawyers had asked for a one-day jail sentence, while prosecutors sought "maximum or near maximum."

Rosmah, 70, had pleaded not guilty to the three charges of soliciting and receiving bribes between 2016 and 2017 to help a company secure a $279 million solar power supply project from Najib's government.

Prosecutors say Rosmah sought a bribe of 187.5 million ringgit ($41.80 million), and received 6.5 million ringgit from an official of the company that won the project.

Rosmah has argued that she was framed by her former aide as well as several government and company officials involved in the project.

She also faces 17 charges of money laundering and tax evasion in a separate case.

Her lawyer Jagjit Singh said Rosmah was shocked with the verdict.

"The fine imposed today is unprecedented...To say she is upset is putting it mildly," he told reporters after the sentencing.

HUNDREDS OF HANDBAGS

Last week, Najib began serving a 12-year jail sentence after Malaysia's top court upheld his conviction in a case linked to a multibillion-dollar graft scandal at state fund 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB). He remains on trial in four other corruption cases.

Najib was voted out of power amid public outrage over the 1MDB scandal, which is the subject of corruption and money laundering investigations in at least six countries.

The U.S. Department of Justice alleges that $4.5 billion were stolen from 1MDB, about $1 billion of which made their way into Najib's personal bank accounts.

Some of the funds stolen from 1MDB were used to buy jewellery for Rosmah, including a $27 million pink diamond necklace, U.S. lawsuits say.

Police found 12,000 individual items of jewellery, 567 luxury handbags including brands such as Hermes and Chanel, 423 watches and $26 million in cash at properties linked to the couple following Najib's unexpected defeat in the 2018 election.

"I must admit that I'm very sad with what happened today," she said. "Nobody saw me taking the money, nobody saw me counting the money.... but if that's the conclusion, I leave it to God." Her lawyers had asked for a one-day jail sentence, while prosecutors sought "maximum or near maximum." Rosmah, 70, had pleaded not guilty to the three charges of soliciting and receiving bribes between 2016 and 2017 to help a company secure a $279 million solar power supply project from Najib's government. HUNDREDS OF HANDBAGS Last week, Najib began serving a 12-year jail sentence after Malaysia's top court upheld his conviction in a case linked to a multibillion-dollar graft scandal at state fund 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB). Malaysian Army tank breaks down on Kuala Lumpur highway; Twitter explodes

After losing his final appeal in a case linked to a multi-billion dollar corruption scandal, former Malaysian prime minister Najib Razak is expected to scramble for ways to obtain early release.

Najib, who has been sentenced to 12 years in jail, faces more jail time in cases related to graft at state fund 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) and other government agencies.

He cannot count on political favour as he was found guilty of criminal breach of abusing his power when he was prime minister from 2009 to 2018.

Although he can still apply for a review of the decision by the Federal Court, the reversal of any verdict by the nation's top court is rare.

While Najib argues that he was misled by fugitive financier Jho Low, the prosecutor says he knew the money he got from SRC International was from unlawful activities.

Calling the case the "worst" kind of abuse of power and graft, High Court Judge Mohamad Nazlan said it was "far-fetched" to believe Najib could have been misled.

Allowing Najib to return to active politics and even make a comeback as prime minister, the royal pardon can be helpful to him.

King Al-Sultan Abdullah at the royal palace and Najib are both from Pahang and the latter is the son of Malay nobility.

Just days after Najib's defeat in the 2018 election, opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim was pardoned by the king.

Najib, who has been a lawmaker for 46 years, will lose his position if he does not file the pardon within 14 days.

He owes tax authorities an unpaid bill totalling more than $400 million and is also fighting a bankruptcy case.
