Iran says Mahsa Amini died due to brain tumor surgery | Latest English News | WION

Mahsa Amini, 22, passed away on September 16—three days after going into a coma after being detained by Tehran's morality police for allegedly violating the Islamic Republic's stringent dress regulations for women. She had been accused of breaking the dress code.

As a result of the outrage over her passing, Iran has witnessed a huge wave of protests, the biggest in almost three years. A crackdown on the protest has resulted in the death of dozens of protesters while several others have been arrested.

The women-led demonstrations have persisted for 21 straight nights, despite security forces deploying lethal force.

A statement released by Iran's forensic organisation on Friday claimed that Mahsa Amini's death was not caused by blows to the head or other important body parts.

The statement further said that Amini, whose first name is Jhina in Kurdish, passed away due to her conditions for which she had underwent a surgery for brain tumour at the age of eight.

One of Amini's cousins who lives in Iraq said that Amini died from "a forceful blow to the head," and her grieving parents have filed a complaint against the officers involved.

Other young women and girls have also been slain during the demonstrations, but according to the rights organisation Amnesty International, Iran has been pressuring their families to make public confessions in order to "absolve themselves of guilt for their murders."

Numerous people have died as a result of the widespread street violence that the Iranian government has labelled 'riots', which prompted Western governments to tighten sanctions against the Iranian government and its security forces.

The potential of arbitrary detention was cited by the French foreign ministry as the reason for its Friday advice to its citizens visiting Iran to "leave the country as soon as possible."

More than 10,000 commanders and other top members of Iran's Revolutionary Guards would not be allowed entry into Canada, the country said on Friday, accusing them of committing "heinous" atrocities against the Iranian people.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau stated that this was the "strongest measure we have to take after nations and state institutions," noting that it had previously only been used against regimes responsible for genocide or war crimes.

Iran: Classes suspended after clashes break out at major university over Mahsa Amini's death

The Iranian people’s protest against the custodial death of a 22-year-old woman has spilled over worldwide, with the diaspora community and activists holding agitations against the Tehran government.

In 159 major cities worldwide like Auckland, London, Melbourne, New York, Paris, Rome, Seoul, Stockholm, Sydney and Zurich, protesters marched under the slogan “Women, life, liberty” seeking greater freedom and autonomy for women in Iran.

Many of the protesters are Iranians living in exile.

According to reports, the agitators in these cities assembled at the Islamic Republic’s embassies or consulates or main squares, chanting slogans against the regime, such as “Death to the dictator,” in reference to Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.

On Saturday, several thousand people marched in Montreal and other Canadian cities in solidarity with protests sparked by the death of Mahsa Amini in the custody of Iran's notorious morality police.

In Rome, around 1,000 people took to the streets to vent their anger at the regime.

"With this regime, it is not possible to receive human rights, that's all. Now is the time for all of us to think that we have the ability to change this 43-year-long oppression," Euronews quoted Sahar, who's been living in Italy for 10 years.

In Berlin, more than 1,000 people gathered, holding placards denouncing the Iranian regime, while in Lisbon, some 200 people chanted "no to dictatorship". Iranian authorities on Friday arrested a former football player over his support for protests over the custodial death of young Kurdish woman Mahsa Amini, state media reported. A wave of unrest has rocked Iran since the 22-year-old died on September 16 after her arrest by the morality police in Tehran for allegedly failing to observe the Islamic republic's strict dress code for women.

The street violence has led to the deaths of dozens of people -- mostly protesters but also some members of the security forces -- and hundreds of arrests. "Former Persepolis FC player Hossein Maahini was arrested by the order of the judicial authorities for supporting and encouraging riots on his social media pages," state news agency IRNA said.

On Thursday, Tehran provincial governor Mohsen Mansouri warned celebrities against coming out in support of the protests. "We will take action against the celebrities who have fanned the flames of the riots," ISNA news agency quoted him as saying. On Wednesday, Iran's Mehr news agency said former state television host Mahmoud Shahriari had been arrested for allegedly "encouraging riots and solidarity with the enemy".

Ebrahim Raisi, the hardline President of Iran will address the nation via television on Wednesday (September 28) as authorities struggle to contain protests that have spread to almost all parts of the country. The protests started after the custodial death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini, who was detained by Iran's morality police for wearing "unsuitable attire".

Iranians have persisted with protests in spite of a growing death toll and crackdown by security forces. The crackdown has been fierce with security forces using tear gas, clubs, and in some cases, live ammunition. Social media videos have shown protesters calling for an end to Islamic clerical rule in the country.

Still, a collapse of the Islamic Republic seems remote in the near term since its leaders are determined not to show the kind of weakness they believe sealed the fate of the U.S.-backed Shah in 1979, a senior Iranian official told Reuters.

As protests spread amid crackdown, Iran President Ebrahim Raisi to address nation

Iran's President Ebrahim Raisi condemned Wednesday the "chaos" sparked by a wave of women-led protests over the death of Mahsa Amini while in the custody of the Islamic republic's morality police.

"Those who took part in the riots must be dealt with decisively, this is the demand of the people," said Raisi in a televised interview.

"People's safety is the red line of the Islamic republic of Iran and no one is allowed to break the law and cause chaos," he said.

"The enemy has targeted national unity and wants to pit people against each other," added the ultraconservative president, accusing Iran's archfoe the United States of stoking the unrest.

Amini, a 22-year-old Kurdish woman, died on September 16, three days after she had been arrested for allegedly breaching Iran's strict rules for women on wearing hijab headscarves and modest clothing.

Raisi said the nation had felt "grief and sorrow" over her death, and that forensics and judiciary experts would soon present a final report, but also warned that "protests are different to riots".

"Woman, Life, Freedom!" the protesters have chanted in Iran's biggest demonstrations in almost three years, in which women have defiantly burned their headscarves and cut off their hair.

Their actions have been matched in solidarity protests worldwide, with British-Iranian Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe, who spent six years in jail in Iran, cutting her hair in a video shared on the BBC Persian service.

Amini's bereaved parents have filed a complaint, demanding "a thorough investigation" and the release of "all videos and photographs" of her while in custody, said their lawyer Saleh Nikbakht.

An Iraq-based cousin of Amini, who is a member of a Kurdish nationalist group, charged that she died after a "violent blow to the head" and that one officer had vowed to "instil the rules in her and teach her how to wear the hijab and how to dress".

As the Iranian protests have flared for 12 nights in a row, Iran's police command vowed its forces would confront them "with all their might", in a crackdown that one rights group says has already killed at least 76 people.

Cowardly attacks

Iran has blamed outside forces for the unrest, including "counter-revolutionary" Kurdish groups based in northern Iraq -- across from Iran's Kurdistan province Amini hailed from, and where the protests first flared.

In a major escalation, Iran on Wednesday launched cross-border missile and drone strikes that killed 13 people in Iraq's Kurdistan region, after accusing Kurdish armed groups based there of fuelling the unrest.

The attacks were condemned by the UN mission in Iraq, and the federal government in Baghdad summoned the Iranian ambassador.

The United States condemned the "brazen attacks" and Britain said Iraq's "indiscriminate bombardment" demonstrates "a repeated pattern of Iranian destabilising activity in the region".

Germany slammed the "escalation... against the backdrop of domestic political protests in Iran" and rejected "attempts to locate the causes of the Iranian protests in the neighbouring country".

The Kurdish Democratic Party of Iran, one of the groups targeted, charged that "these cowardly attacks are occurring at a time when the terrorist regime of Iran is unable to crack down on ongoing protests inside and silence the Kurdish and Iranian peoples' civil resistance".

Not a big deal

The Iranian government -- its economy already hit by sanctions over its nuclear programme -- has sought to play down the crisis.

Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian said he told Western diplomats at recent UN meetings that the protests were "not a big deal" for the stability of the clerical state.

"There is not going to be regime change in Iran. Don't play to the emotions of the Iranian people," he told National Public Radio in New York, also accusing "outside elements" of stirring up violence.

Fars news agency said Tuesday "around 60" people had been killed since Amini's death. But the Oslo-based group Iran Human Rights said the crackdown has killed at least 76 people.

Iran's response has drawn concern from the United Nations and condemnation from the around the world, with Germany and Spain summoning the Iranian ambassadors and the United States and Canada announcing new sanctions.

The son of Iran's late shah, in an interview near Washington with AFP, hailed the protests and urged the world to add to the pressure on the clerical leadership.

Reza Pahlavi, whose father was toppled in the 1979 Islamic Revolution, urged greater preparation for a future Iranian system that is secular and democratic.

"It is truly in modern times, in my opinion, the first revolution for the women, by the women -- with the support of the Iranian men, sons, brothers and fathers," said Pahlavi.

While the Iranian police claimed she suffered a stroke during her detention, her parents have claimed she was beaten to death. During the last 10 days, authorities in northern Iran provinces of Mazandaran and Gilan have arrested 450 people and 739 people respectively for protesting against her arrest and subsequent death. Not only this but over 1,200 reformist activists, journalists and demonstrators have been detained since unrest broke out on September 16. Calling them "foreign anti-revolutionary agents," Karimi said the protesters were shouting anti-regime slogans. According to an official toll, at least 41 people have died in the clashes between the police and demonstrators. The Tasnim news agency reported that security forces have released these images of "lead instigators" and are asking residents to "identify them and inform the authorities". State news agency IRNA said the person died from injuries sustained on Thursday in Urmia city in northwest Iran. Previously, some other members of Basij have been killed in Qazvin, Tabriz, Mashhad and Qouchan. Basij is a paramilitary organisation linked to the powerful Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). As per official toll, at least 41 people have died since the unrest began, including members of the Islamic republic's security forces. Anti-hijab protests: Another Iranian paramilitary member killed; young woman 'shot dead'

Iran's foreign minister Hossein Amirabdollahian has been quoted by Iran's semi-official ISNA news agency voicing his displeasure over American support to women-led protests in Iran. The minister said that USA's support to protests is contrary to it diplomatic stance with Iran.

"Peaceful protest is the right of every nation. However, the U.S. involvement in Iran's affairs and support to 'rioters' in implementing their destabilisation project is in clear conflict with Washington's diplomatic messages to Iran regarding the necessity of a nuclear deal and establishing stability in the region," Amirabdollahian said.

Iran expresses displeasure over US support for Mahsa Amini stir, calls protesters 'rioters'

The official death toll in the deadly anti-Hijab protests in Iran has risen to 41. Iran Human Rights association said that nearly a dozen more than the actual number have died in the protests that begun over Mahsa Amini's death. Iran's President Ebrahim Raisi said that they must deal decisively with protests which have erupted in the country's 31 provinces.

Iran's anti-Hijab protests enter 9th day: At least 41 dead, 700 arrested

Iran must deal decisively with protests which have swept the country after the custodial death of a woman detained by the Islamic Republic's morality police, President Ebrahim Raisi said on Saturday.

Iran must deal decisively with protests which have swept the country after the custodial death of a woman detained by the Islamic Republic's morality police, President Ebrahim Raisi said on Saturday. At least 41 people have been killed in the week-long unrest, state television said on Saturday. It said that the toll was based on its own count and official figures were yet to be released. Protests have erupted in most of the country's 31 provinces. State media quoted Raisi on Saturday as saying that Iran must "deal decisively with those who oppose the country's security and tranquility." Raisi was speaking by telephone to the family of a member of the Basij volunteer force killed while taking part in the crackdown on unrest in the northeastern city of Mashhad. The president "stressed the necessity to distinguish between protest and disturbing public order and security, and called the events a riot," state media reported. The protests broke out in northwestern Iran a week ago at the funeral of Mahsa Amini, a 22-year-old Kurdish woman who died after falling into coma following her detention in Tehran by morality police enforcing hijab rules on women's dress. Her death has reignited anger over issues including restrictions on personal freedoms in Iran, the strict dress codes for women, and an economy reeling from sanctions. Women have played a prominent role in the protests, waving and burning their veils. Some have publicly cut their hair as furious crowds called for the fall of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. The protests are the largest to sweep the country since demonstrations over fuel prices in 2019 when Reuters reported 1,500 people were killed in a crackdown on protesters — the bloodiest confrontation in the Islamic Republic's history. WATCH | Anti-Hijab protests spread to 80 cities in Iran × On Friday, state-organised rallies took place in several Iranian cities to counter the anti-government protests, and the army promised to confront "the enemies" behind the unrest. In neighbouring Iraq, dozens of Iraqi and Iranian Kurds rallied outside the United Nations compound in the northern city of Erbil on Saturday, carrying placards with Amini's photograph and chanting "death to the dictator," referring to Khamenei. State television in Iran, which has accused armed exiled Iranian Kurdish dissidents of involvement in the unrest, said Iranian Revolutionary Guards had fired artillery on bases of Kurdish opposition groups in the Kurdish region of northern Iraq. At least three times this week, mobile Internet has been disrupted in Iran, the NetBlocks watchdog has reported. Activists say the move is intended to prevent video footage of the violence from reaching the world. On Saturday, NetBlocks said Microsoft's Skype video calling app was now restricted, the latest such measure after platforms including Instagram, WhatsApp, and LinkedIn were targeted. In an effort to help sustain internet connection, the United States is making exceptions to its sanctions regime on Iran — a move which Tehran said on Saturday was in line with Washington's hostile stance. Rights group Amnesty International said protesters face a "spiralling deadly response from security forces" and called for an independent United Nations investigation. On the night of September 21, shootings by security forces left at least 19 people dead, including three children, it said. “The rising death toll is an alarming indication of just how ruthless the authorities’ assault on human life has been under the darkness of the internet shutdown," Amnesty said. "But in some western and northern areas of Tehran and certain provinces rioters destroyed public property," it said, carrying footage of protesters setting fire to garbage bins and a car, marching, and throwing rocks. The activist Twitter account 1500tasvir carried videos of protests in Tehran's western district of Sattarkhan showing protesters gathered at a square chanting "don't be afraid we all in this together" late on Saturday with a motorcycle apparently belonging to riot police burning in the background. A video posted on social media showed a demonstration in the northern city of Babol with youths trying to take off portraits of Khamenei and Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, the founder of the Islamic Republic, at the gate of a university while bystanders cheered them on and shouted "death to the dictator". 'Must deal decisively with protests', says Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi

State-organised rallies took place in several Iranian cities on Friday to counter nationwide anti-government unrest triggered by the death of a woman in police custody, with marchers calling for the execution of "rioters".

The pro-government marches followed the strongest warning yet from authorities when the army said it would confront "the enemies" behind the unrest - a move that could signal the kind of crackdown that has crushed protests in the past.

The crowds condemned the anti-government protesters as "Israel's soldiers", live state television coverage showed.

"Offenders of the Koran must be executed," they chanted.

The Twitter account 1500tasvir, which has 117,000 followers, reported heavy clashes in the central city of Isfahan between anti-government protesters and security forces.

It also showed anti-government street protests in several parts of the capital and in Shahin Shahr in central Iran.

State TV said 35 people had been killed in the unrest so far based on its own count and an official figure would be announced.

Many Iranians are fuming over the case of Mahsa Amini, 22, who died last week after being arrested by the morality police for wearing "unsuitable attire".

The morality police, attached to Iran's law enforcement, are tasked with ensuring the respect of Islamic morals as described by the country's clerical authorities.

Amini's death has reignited anger over issues including restrictions on personal freedoms in Iran, strict dress codes for women and an economy reeling from sanctions.

The anti-government protests are not expected to pose an immediate threat to Iran's clerical rulers, who have security forces which have put down one protest after another in recent years, analysts say.

But the protests have clearly made the authorities nervous. Women, who have played a prominent role, have challenged the country's Islamic dress code, waving and burning their veils.

Some have publicly cut their hair as furious crowds called for the fall of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

'OUR RED LINE'

Iran's police chief Hossein Ashtari weighed in with tough words in an attempt to stop the protests.

"The people's security is our red line," he told state TV. "Those involved in sabotage and creating insecurity based on directives from outside the country should know that they will be strongly dealt with."

The army's message on Friday, seen as a warning to protesters, read: "These desperate actions are part of the evil strategy of the enemy to weaken the Islamic regime."

The military said it would "confront the enemies' various plots in order to ensure security and peace for the people who are being unjustly assaulted".

Intelligence Minister Mahmoud Alavi on Friday also warned "seditionists" that their "dream of defeating religious values and the great achievements of the revolution will never be realized", according to the AsrIran website.

Friday's pro-government demonstrations showed the strength of the Islamic Republic, President Ebrahim Raisi said, adding that turmoil would not be tolerated.

"The people's presence (in the marches) today, is the power and the honour of the Islamic Republic," Raisi, facing the biggest protests since 2019, said on live television after returning from New York where he attended the United Nations General Assembly.

U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres met with Raisi in New York on Thursday and raised human rights issues, a U.N. spokesperson said.

The United Nations is concerned "about reports of peaceful protests being met with excessive use of force leading to dozens of deaths and injuries", spokesperson Stephane Dujarric told reporters.

HACK ATTACKS, ARRESTS

Human rights group Hengaw said a general strike was held on Friday in Oshnavieh, Javanroud, Sardasht and other towns in the northwest where many of Iran's up to 10 million Kurds live.

Internet blockage watchdog NetBlocks said mobile internet had been disrupted in Iran for a third time.

Twitter accounts linked to Anonymous "hacktivists" voiced support for the protests and said they had attacked 100 Iranian websites, including several belonging to the government.

Websites of the central bank, Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and several state-affiliated news agencies have been disrupted in recent days.

Iran's clerical rulers fear a revival of the protests that erupted in 2019 over gasoline price rises, the bloodiest in the Islamic Republic's history. Reuters reported 1,500 people were killed.

Rights groups such as Hengaw and HRANA, lawyers and social media users reported widespread arrests of students and activists at their homes by security forces in an apparent effort to curb protests.

Majid Tavakoli, a student leader turned human rights activist, was detained overnight, his brother Mohsen said.

"They raided the home and arrested Majid while he was asleep ... We are unable to do anything. Please spread the word," Mohsen Tavakoli tweeted.

As the Iranian government has imposed restrictions on internet access in the backdrop of protests across the country over the death a 22 years old woman in the custody of morality police, the Joe Biden administration on Friday issued guidance to relax sanctions on its internet services in the west Asian country. Reportedly, the US treasury department relaxed the internet rules despite the US still having a plethora of sanctions imposed on Iran. “As courageous Iranians take to the streets to protest the death of Mahsa Amini, the United States is redoubling its support for the free flow of information to the Iranian people,” said deputy treasury secretary Wally Adeyemo “With these changes, we are helping the Iranian people be better equipped to counter the government’s efforts to surveil and censor them,” he further added. The US on Thursday (September 22) announced sanctions on Iran's morality police which is in news due to the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini who was taken into custody over "unsuitable attire". Amini's death in custody has sparked fierce protests across Iran. The US said it held the morality police responsible for Amini's death.

The US Treasury Department also accused the morality police of violating the rights of peaceful protesters and said it had imposed sanctions on seven senior Iranian military and security officials, including the chief of the Iranian army's ground forces.

Public protests in Iran are not showing any signs of abatement. Protesters also torched police stations and vehicles earlier on Thursday. They were reports of security forces coming under attack. Iranian authorities have said that there will be an investigation into the cause of Amini's death.

"Mahsa Amini was a courageous woman whose death in Morality Police custody was yet another act of brutality by the Iranian regime’s security forces against its own people," Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said in a statement.

"The Iranian government needs to end its systemic persecution of women and allow peaceful protest," U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken said in a separate statement.

Nancy Pelosi, Speaker of US House of Representatives also tweeted in support of the protests.

"The courageous voices of the Iranian people are being heard around the world. The United States Congress joins them in mourning the horrific death of Mahsa Amini. Tehran must end its violent, systematic campaign of abuse against women and girls," Pelosi tweeted.
