India: At least 10 killed, 26 injured after truck hits four vehicles, rams into hotel in Dhule

The political scenario in the Indian state of Maharashtra took a dramatic twist when a top leader from the state's opposition party became a part of the ruling Coalition.

Ajit Pawar, Maharashtra's new deputy CM

In yet another dramatic turn of events in the Indian state of Maharashtra, Nationalist Congress Party's (NCP) senior leader Ajit Pawar, on Sunday (July 2), crossed party lines and joined the incumbent Chief Minister Eknath Shinde-led state government and was sworn in as the new deputy CM of the state.

Pawar, along with dozens of other party leaders, joined the state government earlier today, and will now share the post along with incumbent Deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis. However, after he was sworn in, Ajit Pawar clarified that he had not left NCP and joined the state government as the Nationalist Congress Party.

What happened on Sunday?

Earlier, on Sunday, Ajit Pawar, the leader of the opposition in Maharashtra, called an urgent meeting of the NCP MLAs (Members of the Legislative Assembly) amid reported rumours of him being unhappy that he was not chosen as the party’s state unit chief. Reportedly, he had also offered to resign as the opposition leader to take up the post.

Hours later it was announced that NCP leader and Sharad Pawar’s nephew Ajit Pawar will be sworn in as the deputy CM of Maharashtra. At least 30 other MLAs have joined Ajit Pawar out of which around eight ministers – Chaggan Bhujbal, Dilip Walse Patil, Hasan Mushrif, Dhananjay Munde, Dharmobaba Atram, Aditi Tatkare, Sanjay Bansode, and Anil Patil – were also sworn in.

The Indian state has witnessed a fourth oath-taking ceremony in less than three years amid political turmoil. Additionally, this is the 5th time that Ajit Pawar has been sworn in as the deputy CM, the most number of times a politician has been appointed for the post since it was first created in 1978.

‘Triple engine’ government of Maharashtra: Shinde

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Shiv Sena welcomed Pawar with open arms. “Ajit Pawar always followed developmental politics,” said the incumbent Maharashtra CM Shinde.

He added, “Now we have one Chief Minister and two deputy Chief Ministers…I welcome him in the government and now the double engine government will become triple engine government. For the development of Maharashtra, I welcome Ajit Pawar and his leaders. Ajit Pawar’s experience will help strengthen Maharashtra.”

Shinde had once led a similar move against his party Shiv Sena leader Uddhav Thackeray, whose faction is now known as Shiv Sena UBT (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray), when he left with dozens of ministers and joined hands with BJP.

‘Joined government as NCP’: Ajit Pawar

Following the oath-taking ceremony, the newly inducted Deputy CM Ajit Pawar said, “Talks have been ongoing for quite some time, and there will be a cabinet expansion. We need to prioritise the development of Maharashtra. We made the decision to join the Shinde-Fadanvis government with almost all NCP MLAs.”

He also said the expansion of Maharashtra’s cabinet begins today and more ministers will be inducted soon. “Today, we have decided to support the Maharashtra government and took oath as ministers. There will be a discussion on the portfolios later.”

Ajit Pawar also said if NCP can join hands with the BJP in Nagaland, why can’t they do the same for Maharashtra and its people? “Some MLAs could not be contacted as they are out of the country, but I spoke to all of them and they agreed with our decision,” said Ajit Pawar.

The newly appointed deputy CM also went on to praise the Indian PM and said, “The country is progressing under the leadership of PM Modi. He is also popular in other countries. Everyone supports him and appreciates his leadership.”

He added, “We will fight the upcoming Lok Sabha and Assembly elections with them (BJP) and that is why we have taken this decision.” However, Pawar also went on to clarify that “We have joined the government as the Nationalist Congress party and will fight any and every election in the name of the NCP.”

Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a meeting to review the government's preparedness for Cyclone Biparjoy. During the meeting, the authorities briefed the prime minister about the situation and measures taken by the government.

Cyclone Biparjoy, a severe storm that originated in the Arabian Sea, might intensify further and hit Gujarat's Kutch. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning for Saurashtra and Kutch coasts in Gujarat. On Sunday, the IMD bulletin issued a yellow alert for Gujarat due to Cyclone Biparjoy. Officials at the Deendayal Port Authority in Kandla, Kutch, have started to relocate people from low-lying areas to temporary shelters amid the cyclone alerts. Various regions of Maharashtra, especially Mumbai, witnessed rainfall and strong winds on Sunday night. Meanwhile, the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) in Pakistan has also issued an alert as the cyclone might affect the coastal region of Sindh.

Here are the latest updates on Cyclone Biparjoy.

Cyclone Biparjoy Latest Updates

According to the IMD-issued alert, Cyclone Biparjoy, located over the Arabian Sea, might shift northwards and intensify into a severe cyclonic storm. In the next three to four days, the harsh weather conditions due to Cyclone Biparjoy might increase the wind speed to 160 kilometres per hour. IMD has also advised the fishermen not to venture into the sea. The weather department has also warned the southwestern states of India to stay alert for the next five days.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a meeting around 1 pm on Monday to review the situation related to Cyclone Biparjoy, as per reports.

Authorities have evacuated people from Saurashtra & Kutch coasts. They have also suspended fishing activities on Gujarat's north and south coasts.

Cyclone Biparjoy, moving in the northeast at eight km/h over the past six hours, might continue the movement and make landfall in Gujarat.
Maharashtra government on Friday (May 12) dropped all charges against Param Bir Singh, former commissioner of police, Mumbai. These charges were brought against him during the departmental enquiry initiated against him by the Maha Vikas Aghadi government which ruled the state before the current dispensation headed by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde.

In spite of dropping of charges, Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) will continue to probe five cases registered against Singh. The retired officer of Indian Police Service (IPS) faces multiple cases of extortion, corruption and misconduct.

Param Bir Singh was Police Commissioner when journalist and anchor Arnab Goswami was arrested by Mumbai Police.

Speaking to reporters in Nagpur, deputy chief minister of Maharashtra Devendra Fadnavis said the government decided to revoke Singh's suspension order following the Central Administrative Tribunal's (CAT) decision to close the departmental inquiry against him.

After this, Param Bir Singh wrote an explosive letter to the then chief minister of Maharashtra Uddhav Thackeray. In the letter, Singh alleged that then home minister Anil Deshmukh had asked police officers to collect Rs 100 crore (more than USD 12 million) per month from hotels in Mumbai. Maharashtra government drops all charges against ex-Mumbai top cop

Western India's wooden toys industry is facing an acute crisis an age-old occupation for the local community in Maharashtra is now rendered unsustainable it seems like modernity has taken a toll on the livelihoods of the people of India.

Western India's toy industry in tatters | A business for generations now unsustainable

Eknath Shinde has been sworn in as the Western Indian State's new Chief Minister. The swearing-in comes after days of political turmoil in Maharashtra. Just yesterday, Uddhav Thackeray stepped down from the Chief Minister's post, this was after the country's Supreme Court refused to stay the floor test.

Relief for Shinde, Lessons for Uddhav: What next in Maharashtra post SC verdict?

Supreme Court of India on Thursday (May 11) refused to grant relief to the Uddhav Thackeray camp in the former Shiv Sena chief’s battle against Eknath Shinde, the chief minister of the western Indian state of Maharashtra. Shinde, once a prominent figure in Shiv Sena under Uddhav Thackeray, revolted against him last year. He found support from a large number of Shiv Sena's Members of Legislative Assembly (MLAs). Thackeray subsequently resigned and Shinde became chief minister with the support of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

The Election Commission of India (ECI) has already ruled that the Shinde faction can use the name Shiv Sena and the famous 'bow and arrow' symbol of the party.

"Relief could have been provided if he [Thackeray] had not resigned and faced the floor test. Governor should not have called for the trust vote but because Uddhav Thackeray resigned, Governor was justified in calling Eknath Shinde in forming the government," said Supreme Court on Thursday.

In a unanimous verdict on a batch of pleas related to the political crisis that led to the fall of the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government led by Thackeray following a revolt by the Eknath Shinde faction, a five-judge Constitution bench headed by Chief Justice of India D Y Chandrachud and comprising Justices MR Shah, Krishna Murari, Hima Kohli and PS Narasimha said that it could not quash the resignation tendered by Thackeray.

It made clear that had Thackeray not resigned, the Supreme Court could have reinstated him but the court can't quash a resignation.

The Supreme Court on March 17 had reserved its verdict. The bench noted that the petitioners argued for restoring the status quo ante, however, Thackeray did not face the floor test.

Former Maharashtra governor erred, says Supreme Court

The top court held that the Maharashtra Governor erred in concluding that Uddhav Thackeray had lost the majority in the House.

The bench said the lack of security to MLAs (Eknath Shinde faction) is not a reason to conclude that a government has fallen and it was nothing, but an extraneous reason to be relied upon by the Governor.

The top court said the Governor had no objective material to doubt the confidence of the Maha Vikas Aghadi government and to call for a floor test.

The bench noted that Devendra Fadanvis and independent MLAs also didn't move a no confidence motion and the Governor's exercise of discretion was not in accordance with the law.

The bench said neither the Constitution nor the law empowers the Governor to enter the political arena and play a role either in inter-party or intra-party disputes.

The apex court also referred the 2016 Nabam Rebia verdict by a five-judge constitution bench, which relates to the power of speaker on disqualification of MLAs, to a larger bench of seven judges.

The court pronounced its judgment on the political crisis in Maharashtra in connection with the rebellion by Shiv Sena leader Eknath Shinde and other MLAs, leading to the fall of Maha Vikas Aghadi government led by Uddhav Thackeray.

Maharashtra crisis: Uddhav Thackeray resigned as CM, cannot reinstate him, says Supreme Court

A school in the Indian state of Maharashtra is revolutionising, with the help of Artificial Intelligence, the way the quality of the food eaten by the students is tested. AI has the potential of providing an efficient and reliable method of food quality testing.

When it was found out that 61 girls out of the 222 were malnourished in the school, AI-based equipment was installed to improve the nutrition level of tribal children at Todsa Ashram School of Etapalli village in Maharashtra's Gadchiroli city.

The initiative was taken by the administration under project Bhamragad and there are eight government schools part of it. So, the AI machine works on the basis of Image recognition. AI algorithms trained to recognize visual characteristics of food products, such as colour, texture, and shape, can detect the quality of the food.

Overall, it appears to be a great initiative by tapping into the potential of AI to improve the efficiency and accuracy of food quality testing which can lead to healthier food options for children.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated a 246-km section of the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway in Dausa on Sunday. The Delhi-Dausa-Lalsot stretch is set to reduce the travel time between the national capital and Jaipur considerably. The PM pressed the button of a remote to mark the foundation laying/inauguration of a total of four projects, including the first phase of the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway, worth more than Rs 18,000 crore.

Modi said when the government invests in highway projects, ports, railways, optical fibre, and opens medical colleges, it gives strength to traders, small shopkeepers and industries. "Investment on infrastructure attracts more investment."

Developed at a cost of more than Rs 12,150 crore, this first completed section of the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway will provide a major boost to the economic development of the entire region.

Modi said the new section will reduce the travel time between Jaipur and Delhi to half.

The PM said those who travel to Delhi for work can now come back to home in the evening after finishing their task. The PM said that rural 'haats' are being developed around the expressway where the local artisans can sell their articles.

He said the expressway will benefit the Sariska National Park, Keoladeo National Park, Ranthambore National Park as well as cities such as Jaipur and Ajmer.

Rajasthan is already known for its tourism sector and the attraction will increase further with the new infrastructure project, the prime minister said.

Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari, Union MoS V K Singh, Union minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat and other leaders were present on the stage during the function.

Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot and his Haryana counterpart Manohar Lal Khattar addressed the programme through a video link.

While Gehlot joined the programme from the chief minister's residence in Jaipur, Khattar addressed the event from a function in Nuh district.

Earlier, the PMO said Modi's emphasis on building excellent road infrastructure as an engine of growth, development and connectivity in "New India" is being realised by the construction of a number of ongoing world class expressways across the country.

The Delhi-Mumbai Expressway will be India's longest with a length of 1,386 km. It will reduce the travel distance between Delhi and Mumbai by 12 per cent, from 1,424 km to 1,242 km, while the travel time will be cut by 50 per cent, from the current 24 hours to 12 hours, it said.

The expressway will pass through Delhi, Haryana, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat and Maharashtra and connect major cities like Kota, Indore, Jaipur, Bhopal, Vadodara and Surat.

It will also serve 93 PM Gati Shakti Economic Nodes, 13 ports, eight major airports and as many multi-modal logistics parks (MMLPs) along with the new upcoming greenfield airports such as Jewar Airport, Navi Mumbai Airport and JNPT port.

It will have a catalytic impact in the developmental trajectory of all adjoining regions, thus contributing in a major way in the economic transformation of the country, the PMO said.

"Investment on infrastructure attracts more investment." Developed at a cost of more than Rs 12,150 crore, this first completed section of the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway will provide a major boost to the economic development of the entire region.
