A woman in the western Indian state of Maharashtra lost her life on Monday (Jun 17) after her car fell into a 300-feet deep gorge as her friend was shooting a reel for social media.

The incident took place near the Dutt Dham Temple hill and a related video has now gone viral on the internet.

The 23-year-old girl has been identified as Shweta Survase from Chhatarapati Sambhaji Nagar.

A Khutabad police station official was quoted by news agency PTI as saying, "Survase tried her hand at driving while her friend Shivraj Mule was shooting a video. She accidentally pressed the accelerator while the car was in reverse gear. The vehicle slid back, broke a crash barrier, and plunged into the valley. It took an hour for rescuers to reach her and the vehicle. She was declared dead on arrival at a nearby hospital."

Despite the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)'s extensive campaigning in the east Indian state of&nbsp;West Bengal, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's Trinamool Congress continues to lead in 30 Lok Sabha constituencies as the counting of votes is underway, according to the data released by the Election Commission on Tuesday (June 4).

The ECI data showed that the Trinamool Congress was leading on 30 seats, BJP on 10, Congress on 1 and CPI(M) on one seat. West Bengal has&nbsp;42 Lok Sabha constituencies in the 543-member Parliament.

The TMC, as per the data released by ECI at 2 pm, exhibited a powerful performance in Baharampur, Dum Dum, Jadavpur, Asansol, Birbhum, Krishnanagar, and Diamond Harbour.

TMC candidate and former cricketer Yusuf Pathan is leading with a significant margin in Baharampur, while the party's Sougata Ray and Sayani Ghosh are ahead in Dum Dum and Jadavpur constituencies, respectively.

In Asansol, actor-turned-politician Shatrughan Prasad Sinha is leading.

TMC candidates Satabdi Roy and Mahua Moitra are leading in Birbhum and Krishnanagar, respectively.

Notably, Mamata's nephew Abhishek Banerjee is leading with a staggering margin of 693,420 votes in the Diamond Harbour constituency. He has polled 1,011,196 votes till now in total.

This comes after exit polls had precited a majority for NDA in the state.

In Maharashtra, the INDIA bloc is leading on 28 Lok Sabha seats, while the three-party Mahuyati alliance is ahead in 17 constituencies.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is leading on 13 seats, Congress 11, Shiv Sena (UBT) 11, NCP (shared pawar) on 6 seats, Shiv Sena (Shinde) on 5 seats, NCP on one seat, as per the Election Commission.&nbsp;

In Baramati, NCP candidate Supriya Sule is leading by 8689 votes while Sunetra Pawar is trailing behind.

Congress' Chavan Vasantrao Balwantrao is leading by a margin of 5372 votes against his BJP rival Chikhalikar Prataprao Govindrao.

In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, the National Democratic Alliance won 41 seats while the UPA won 5 seats.

Maharashtra Lok Sabha Elections 2024 Schedule and Date: Voting has concluded&nbsp;in the west Indian state of Maharashtra. The process in the state&nbsp;was held in five phases&nbsp;between April 19 and May 20.

<h2>Maharashtra Politics&nbsp;</h2>

The Indian state has seen a major shift in alliances and parties, particularly since 2014 when the current Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led NDA alliance came into power at the Centre following the general elections.&nbsp;

In 2014, the state also held Legislative Assembly elections where Shiv Sena and the BJP had formed a coalition and the ruling party won the most seats.&nbsp;

Prior to that, a coalition government with the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and the Indian National Congress (INC) ruled the state. &nbsp;

In 2022, Maharashtra witnessed a high-stakes political crisis when Shiv Sena – founded by the late Balasaheb Thackeray – member Eknath Shinde cross-voted for the BJP and later broke up the party.&nbsp;

Eventually, Shinde joined the ruling party and formed a BJP-Shiv Sena coalition government in Maharashtra. He also managed&nbsp;to retain the Shiv Sena name and party symbol. In January, his faction was recognised by the Maharashtra Assembly Speaker Rahul Narwekar as the “real Shiv Sena”.&nbsp;

Uddhav Thackeray, former CM who led the party when Shinde was also a member, changed his faction’s name to Shiv Sena (UBT) and its symbol to a flaming torch.&nbsp;

In 2023, Ajit Pawar, once a member of the NCP – founded by his uncle Sharad Pawar – left the party with several MLAs and joined the BJP-Shiv Sena government led by Shinde. In February 2024, the ECI awarded the original name and the symbol to the faction led by Ajit.&nbsp;

Therefore, the faction led by Sharad Pawar was named NCP (Sharad Chandra Pawar) or NCP (SCP) and the party was allowed by the Supreme Court to use the ‘man blowing turha’ as the symbol for the&nbsp;elections.&nbsp;

CCTV footage of the Dombivali boiler blast recently surfaced on the internet which showed the moment when the incident took place on Thursday (May 23) in the west Indian state of Maharashtra.

Four workers can be seen standing at a corner of the boiler plant, moments before the blast occurred.

Then after a loud thud happened, triggered by the blast, the broken pieces of glass flew in the air and the people immediately ran from the building to save their lives.

The blast occurred in a chemical factory in the Dombivli area of Thane district in Maharashtra, which claimed the lives of 10 people. The rescue operation is still underway to retrieve two individuals who are reportedly missing.

The blast led to a massive fire in the area, cooling operations for which are still ongoing.

Siddhesh Kadam, Chairman of the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board, inspected the site on Friday (May 24) and said that the team was working to complete the rescue operation as soon as possible.

"There have been a total of 10 casualties here, with 2 people missing, so the rescue operation is ongoing. We are working to complete this rescue operation as soon as possible and dealing with the hazardous chemicals," Kadam said.

<h2>Maharashtra CM announces Rs 500,000 compensation for family of victims</h2>

Meanwhile, Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde on Thursday announced a Rs 500,000 compensation for the family of the deceased and also ordered a high-level probe into the incident.

"A high-level enquiry will be conducted and an investigation will be carried out against the accused. No one will be spared. The kin of the deceased will be given Rs 500,000 each by the state government. The administration will sponsor the treatment of the injured... The company will also compensate the employees," CM Shinde told reporters.

"The intensity of the blast was very high. 6-7 neighbouring factories have been damaged. Residential properties have also been damaged. Highly hazardous companies such as this, which fall under the Red category, will be shifted... The government has decided to shift such factories to non-residential areas," he added. &nbsp;

<h2>Case registered against company owners&nbsp;</h2>

The Thane Police have also registered a case against the owners Malti Pradeep Mehta, Malay Pradeep Mehta, and other officials of Amudan Chemical Private Limited, under various sections of the IPC, including 304, 324, 326, 285, 286, 427, and 34.&nbsp;

All of the accused are absconding and the police have formed five teams to arrest them.

"The accused is absconding after a case was registered against the Mehta family and the owner of the Amudan factory. A total of 5 teams have been formed to arrest the accused and are tracing the accused," Thane Police said.&nbsp;

"Those feared drowned include three men, one woman and two children. This was a passenger boat regularly plying between Bhugaon in Karmala taluka Solapur and Kalashi in Indapur taluka of Pune. On Tuesday evening, the boat was coming from Bhugaon to Kalashi. There was rain and strong wind due to which the boat is believed to have capsized," an officer from Pune district administration was quoted as saying by The Indian Express.

The officer added: "Of the seven people on the boat, one of them, who is a police officer, managed to swim to safety. The water level in the dam backwaters is very low and because of that, there is a lot of silt, which we believe could have been a factor that posed a challenge for those who are feared drowned. The silt is also posing a challenge in the search operation by NDRF and SDRF."

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday (Apr 29) launched a scathing attack against the Congress and accused it of minting the idea of "saffron terrorism".

He further alleged that the grand old party had plans to put the blame of the Mumbai 26/11 terror attacks on "holy saffron and innocent Hindus."

“Because of the appeasement by Congress and INDI alliance, when terrorism increased in the country, Congress hatched another deep conspiracy, Pune land is its witness. Congress came up with the theory of 'saffron terrorism' to put all the blame on innocent Hindus, they put innocent Hindus in jail and harassed them,” Modi said while addressing a rally in Pune.

“Congress was prepared to put the blame for the 26/11 Mumbai attack on holy saffron...they are those people who give statements in support of Yasin Bhatkal when he gets arrested. They are those people who open court during midnight to stop the death sentence of terrorist Yakub Memon,” he added.&nbsp;

He then said that India was severely affected by incidents related to terrorism ten years ago, but now the ones who sent the terrorists to the country are starving.

“We banned the PFI who indulged in violence in the country. Their bigwigs are now rotting in jail. For votes, Congress is taking their support in Kerala. You can't expect your well-being from such people,” PM Modi said.

The opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi on Tuesday (Apr 9)&nbsp;announced its seat-sharing formula for the Lok Sabha polls with the Shiv Sena (UBT) getting the major chunk of 21 seats, while the Congress will contest 17 seats and the NCP (SP) 10.

The Congress gave up its claim on the contentious Sangli and Bhiwandi seats, which will now be contested by the Sena (UBT) and the NCP (SP), respectively.

While the Sena (UBT) said the goal of the alliance was to defeat the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the Congress said it has decided to be “large-hearted” to achieve this objective.

Addressing a press conference at ‘Shivalaya’, the Shiv Sena (UBT) office in south Mumbai, party head and former chief minister Uddhav Thackeray said the seat-sharing deal has been reached and in an alliance, winning is important and defeating the BJP is the goal.

“When victory against the BJP is the larger goal, we have to set aside certain differences,” he said when asked about the Shiv Sena (UBT) refusing to give Sangli seat to the Congress.

Thackeray said there was a strange coincidence of “surya grahan” (solar eclipse), “amavasya” (new moon) and the BJP rally on the same day (Monday).

“Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s speech yesterday was not that of a prime minister. When we respond, please don’t take it as an insult of the prime minister. Our criticism will be about a leader of a corrupt party,” Thackeray said to a query on Modi referring to his party as “fake Shiv Sena”.

“It is not right for a leader of the party of extortionists to call us fake,” he said.

The BJP is a “party of extortionists” and this was seen after the electoral bonds “scam” was exposed, Thackeray claimed.

Maharashtra Congress president Nana Patole said his party has decided to be “large-hearted” to achieve the final goal of defeating PM Modi and the BJP.

The Congress workers will fight the BJP and ensure victory of the MVA candidates in Sangli and Bhiwandi, he said.

“Our workers will never forget how the BJP ill-treated our leaders Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi,” he said.

Patole said the parties of Thackeray and Sharad Pawar were “hijacked” by rebels. “Leaders of both the original parties are with us and Modi calls the Uddhav Thackeray-led party as fake Shiv Sena,” he said.

According to local officials, the women were angered when Rathod, who was also there to buy cigarettes, started staring at them. Subsequently, an argument broke out, which soon escalated into a fight which the 28-year-old had reportedly recorded.

The video shows Panjhade abusing him and blowing smoke at him. She later called her friend Akash Raut to the shop.&nbsp;

Raut arrived with his friends after Rathod had fled the scene. However, he and his friends went after the 28-year-old and allegedly stabbed him multiple times.&nbsp;

After the alleged stabbing police were called and the 28-year-old was reportedly rushed to the hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, the shopkeeper, Laxman Tawde told the police that he had shut the shop and left for his house after Raut was called.&nbsp;

The three accused Raut, Panjhade, and Sayre have been detained. “Police have arrested three accused and a case has been registered,” said the police.&nbsp;

The complaint was filed by Rathod’s relative and the trio was arrested under sections 302 and 34 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), according to local officials. The police are looking for the fourth accused, one of Raut’s friends.&nbsp;
