Lionel Messi inspired Inter Miami to their first ever MLS Cup title on Saturday (Dec 6), playing a starring role in a 3-1 victory over the Vancouver Whitecaps in Florida. But Messi then laid on an assist for Argentina international team-mate Rodrigo De Paul to put Miami 2-1 up before supplying the pass for Tadeo Allende's injury time goal that sealed victory.&nbsp;Miami's first Major League Soccer crown provided glittering vindication for co-owner David Beckham, the former England and Manchester United star who had long dreamed of bringing success to Miami.&nbsp;"There was a lot of sleepless nights, but I always believed," Beckham said afterwards. "I always believed in bringing the team here, and when I found the right partners I knew anything was possible.&nbsp;"We always promised our fans that we would bring success, and bring the best players, and today we've achieved that."&nbsp;Vancouver -- spearheaded by German legend Thomas Mueller -- had looked the likelier victor after recovering from Ocampo's eighth minute own goal to level through Ali Ahmed in the 60th minute. The Whitecaps almost took the lead moments after the equaliser, with Emmanuel Sabbi's shot crashing off both posts in the 62nd minute as Miami escaped.<h3>Costly mistakes</h3>&nbsp;But with the Whitecaps in complete control, the Canadians were stunned when Miami regained the lead after a blunder by midfielder Andres Cubas. Cubas took too long in possession and was robbed by Messi, who skipped clear before releasing De Paul to provide the clinical finish.&nbsp;Vancouver never recovered from that hammer blow and Miami started the party in injury time when Messi played in Allende for the third to make it 3-1.&nbsp;Whitecaps coach Jesper Sorensen said his team had never recovered after falling behind to De Paul's goal against the run of play.&nbsp;"We made a few mistakes and they took advantage of them," Sorensen said. "We made a mistake -- the ball dropped for Messi and he made the pass to Rodrigo. A game is decided in a few moments, and when you play Miami, they have the players to take advantage of these moments."&nbsp; The win marks the crowning achievement of Inter Miami since the club -- which entered the league as an expansion club in 2020 -- successfully lured World Cup-winner Messi to Miami in 2023.&nbsp;Saturday's victory also heralded the end of an era for two key figures in Miami's rise to the top of Major League Soccer, with Messi's former Barcelona team-mates and Spanish internationals Jordi Alba and Sergio Busquets heading into retirement.&nbsp;"That was one of the main objectives -- to say goodbye to two good friends that are now stepping into a new life in retirement," eight-time Ballon D'Or winner Messi said of Alba and Busquets' triumphant farewell.&nbsp;"This was very special for them and the whole team. We say goodbye in the best way to two of the best players in football's history."&nbsp;Disclaimer: This story has been published from a news agency feed with minimal edits to adhere to WION's style guide. Although FIFA doesn’t recognise the trophy won on Saturday, if Messi wins next week, he will claim his 47th career title, yet another trophy alongside his former teammates and close friends, Jordi Alba and Sergio Busquets, who are both bound to retire after this season.

Lionel Messi has now surpassed legends Ferenc Puskás (404) and Pelé (369) for most recorded assists in football history.

Meanwhile, the call to add Hyderabad to Messi’s GOAT tour came in the aftermath of the cancellation of Argentina’s proposed friendly in Kochi, originally scheduled for November 17, as also announced by Kerala Sports Minister V Abdurahiman. Besides, the latest plan ensured Messi’s much-awaited tour would span across the country's four corners - east (Kolkata), south (Hyderabad), west (Mumbai), and north (New Delhi). &nbsp; An Indian Express report also confirms that, alongside Messi, the Indian fans will see Argentina great Luis Suarez and Rodrigo de Paul feature in the tour, both of whom share a close bond with Messi. &nbsp; This visit, however, would be Messi’s second to India since a friendly against Venezuela at Kolkata’s Salt Lake Stadium in 2011. Incidentally, that was the first time Messi captained Argentina.

It is the second time in his professional career that Lionel Messi will visit India. He first visited the country 14 years ago in 2011.

They pulled level with Cincinnati on 62 points in the Eastern Conference, four points behind leaders Philadelphia, who have clinched the Supporters Shield as the team with the best regular season record in the league. Messi's 39th-minute strike to open the scoring was a beauty. Baltasar Rodriguez robbed an Atlanta defender and found Messi just outside the box. Messi strode forward and curled a left-footed shot around Pedro Amador and out of the reach of Atlanta goalkeeper Jayden Hibbert in the upper left corner of the net. Hibbert had denied Messi in the 13th minute as the eight-time Ballon d'Or winner came up empty on a string of early attempts. Messi was instrumental in Jordi Alba's goal that doubled Miami's lead in the 52nd minute, lofting a ball forward to the Spaniard, who chipped a left-footed shot over Hibbert into the bottom right corner of the net. Alba's sixth goal of the season came on the day that Inter paid tribute to the former Spain and Barcelona star, who announced this week that he would retire at the end of the MLS season. Messi and Rodrigo De Paul had trained with Argentina this week in Florida, although Messi was a spectator as Argentina beat Venezuela 1-0 in a friendly at Hard Rock Stadium on Friday. De Paul came on as a late substitute against Venezuela and was unavailable for Inter, who had six players called up for international duty during the current window, which will also see Argentina play Puerto Rico on Monday in a match moved from Chicago to Inter's Chase Stadium in Fort Lauderdale.
