While it's true that two-thirds of people give up on their resolutions within the first few weeks of making them, you must not give up on the tradition completely. Do not stop yourself from becoming your best version just because you fear slipping up on your resolutions a few months from now. With the right strategies, a bit of dedication and some science-backed advice, you can make some achievable, realistic resolutions that give you a sense of motivation and responsibility in the next 12 months.

Whether you want to quit smoking, get fit or start going to bed early, there're a tonne of reasons to want to hop on the New Year’s resolution bandwagon. Since a fresh start like a new year can inspire you to relegate some missteps of a past chapter, you must tell yourself, "A new year calls for a new me and there's nothing that can stop me from meeting my goals."

To help you stick to your promises to yourself and celebrate the beauty of a fresh start, we have listed some science-backed tips, sourced from books, research studies and experts.

'Tiny habits' approach

'Tiny Habits', as described by BJ Fogg in Fogg Behavioral Model in 2010, is a behaviour-changing method, which states that three major elements help people make a behavioural change in the long run. They are - Motivation, Ability and Prompt.

Fogg, who ran the Behavior Design Lab at Stanford University, advised people to pick something extremely specific rather than an abstract goal and then make it as easy as possible for themselves. In short, pick habits that you actually want to inculcate in your everyday routine, instead of picking habits that you feel SHOULD be a part of your everyday routine.

An abstract idea would be - to exercise every day - and a specific one would be - to do yoga for an hour thrice a week. Now, a way to not mess up with your resolution would be to set daily reminders and alerts.

Other than setting more specific goals, you must also make them measurable and set deadlines for the same. You can also join forces with a family member, a friend, or a colleague and work together to meet your New Year's resolutions as "accountability buddies".

Set a penalty clause

Several studies suggest that penalties are much more motivating than rewards. While we are used to getting penalised for our missteps by others, fining ourselves for our misbehaviour might feel alien to us at first, but with time, it becomes second nature to us.

Now, you must be thinking how does a penalty clause work? All you need to do is ensure that you face some penalty for not achieving your New Year's resolution. From donating a fixed amount to charity every time you skip a workout session to taking away an hour from your relaxing time for going to bed late, the penalty can be anything.

A fun fact - several websites like StickK and Beeminder let you put money on the line that you will have to forfeit to an NGO or a charity if you don’t achieve a stated goal. All you have to do is appoint a referee and set the stakes.

Opt for a cue-based plan

A great way to stick to your resolution is to use cues to help you remember when and where to act. A cue-based plan or strategy to achieve your goals can be a game-changer for many and several studies have backed this claim.

Deciding when and where you will execute your resolution jogs your memory when it’s opportune and it also generates guilt if you flake out. This also helps you anticipate and dodge obstacles when it's time to achieve those goals.

A quick example of this would be: meditate for 20 minutes before going to bed and after waking up. A vague resolution would be : meditate every day. Here the cue is the action of going to bed and waking up.

Science-backed tips for sticking to your New Year 2023 resolutions

As people walk into the new year with a renewed zeal to follow a healthier lifestyle, they make pledges specifically for the first month of the year. One such trend is "dry January" in which people stay away from alcohol for the first month of the year. Molly Gambhir tells you more.

Gravitas: Is it a 'dry January for you?

After a heavy night of binge-drinking on some alcohol, you do develop a hangover and so does your skin. Hungover skin looks dry, dehydrated, pale and sallow.

Let's see how alcohol consumption and lack of sleep affect our skin

Alcohol is a diuretic, so it dehydrates your skin making it dull and pale. Sugar in certain alcoholic drinks enables a process called glycation which leads to the breakdown of collagen and elastin fibres. Sugar can also cause a spike in androgen hormones and sebum secretion resulting in pimples.

Alcohol also results in inflammation of the skin and aggravates conditions like rosacea, psoriasis or even acne. As a pro-inflammatory, alcohol contributes to puffiness, redness and flushing. Alcohol also results in the accumulation of free radicals in the skin which make the skin look dull and dehydrated.

Lack of sleep results in stress which can increase the cortisol hormones which intern results in dark circles. It also causes the breakdown of collagen fibres leading to fine lines and dilated pores. Melatonin, also known as the sleep hormone is released while you are sleeping and it helps in skin repair. Lack of sleep will also deprive the skin of its normal repair mechanism.

Remedies:

First of all, hydrate your body by drinking 3 to 4 litres of water. Supplements of vitamin C or citrus fruits, pure lemon shots and antioxidant supplements such as glutathione help to neutralise the free radicals that accumulated due to the consumption of alcohol. Use hyaluronic acid serums to hydrate the skin.

Use Ceramide-based moisturisers to repair the barrier layer of the skin. Medicated creams such as oxymetazoline, tacrolimus or pimecrolimus are prescribed when there is excessive redness. Use a salicylic acid or azelaic acid-based serum if you have breakouts. Take probiotics to cleanse your gut.

Cosmetic procedures which are going to gain popularity in 2023

In terms of skincare, people are going to be ingredient-conscious and minimum makeup will be the trend. Hence the need to have clear, even-toned skin with smaller pores and no fine lines and no blemishes is what people will look out for.

Treatments in terms of micro needling radio frequency, platelet-rich plasma, laser toning, derma pen, and oxygeneo facials will be sought after procedures to get the above minimum makeup or no makeup look.

In terms of beauty treatments, younger females up to the age of 30 are opting for fillers and the eye to treat hollow under eyes and look fresh.

Non-surgical nose jobs with fillers and fillers injected into the lips to volumize the lips will also be popular. Botox injection to obtain a smooth Oval facial contour will also be sought after.

Younger men up to the age of 30, are opting for a more defined chin and jawline with the help of fillers.

Skin booster injections such as profhilo, volite will be popular amongst all genders and age groups from 25 to 55 as preventative measures, so that the process of collagen breakdown, wrinkles and sagging is delayed. Besides, skin boosters also keep the skin well-hydrated, radiant and supple.

Muscle firming with TESLA Former which uses Functional Magnetic Stimulation (FMS), will be the next big thing. It is a non-invasive body toning, muscle-building treatment for the butt, arms and thighs, and of course the abdomen.
What is hungover skin and how to fix it?

5 detox drinks to flush alcohol out of your system after a big party weekend

A fresh start offers a fresh start whether it is the first day of classes, the initial day of a vacation, or an initial attempt at a new endeavour. When you initially start out, you are immediately struck with a variety of stimuli. You take in your surroundings as you glance about in awe. It looks as though the sun is about to rise.

Every door is open when you first enter. There are several options available. Your future is a blank page waiting to be filled. Excitation and nervousness coexist. You experience unease, doubt, and perhaps even terror. The rush and exhilaration of being somewhere new are produced when these feelings come together.

We frequently think that professionals are superior to beginners because they are more knowledgeable. A novice, however, may have unanticipated benefits over an experience in some situations. As a novice, you have no preconceived ideas about what is and isn't, possible and impossibly impossible. You are unaware of the bounds and the regulations. For this reason, starting off can actually be advantageous.

You have a unique perspective on issues, therefore you approach challenges in ways that others might not have. By upending the status quo, you force people to reconsider their existing tactics. Research shows that taking on new tasks alters the brain in real ways. Your brain creates new neural connections as you try new activities. You strengthen your cognitive abilities and prevent cognitive deterioration as a result.

Beginnings occur at a nearly lightning-fast rate while we are young. The environment, however, changes once you graduate and begin working. You enter a large area that never appears to end rather than periodically arriving at a checkpoint. You are faced with an endlessly vast, continuous horizon. With age, we realize that we gradually become comfortable in the same roles, connections, and environments. Eventually, a pattern starts to take shape.

The current situation will continue until we take proactive action. Beginnings must be made by the individual. You may always start over by dipping your toes in something different. You may try out a different talent, like learning to cook a recipe you've never tried before. You can travel to a new location, whether it is nearby or as far away as a restaurant in your neighbourhood.

Even in a comfortable setting, adopting a beginner's mindset might be beneficial. Even if you believe you are an expert on a subject, occasionally a surprise will arise. The "Empty your cup" mentality can be helpful in this situation. To make place for knowledge, development, and ideas, your mind needs to let go of its outdated beliefs. To start, be willing to learn from other people, places, and things.

Imagine a child's mentality. They have a ton of inquiries. Our mindset changes as we age. However, asking questions might be beneficial. You use your curiosity when you want to know how something works, why someone did something, or why something is the way it is. You make yourself more receptive to knowledge and openness.

There are various ways to begin over, even if you don't think of yourself as a beginner. You can start learning a new subject, a new skill, or a new location. You can get practice using a novice's perspective. Finding your purpose sometimes requires a fresh start.

When it comes to making major fashion statements with her sartorial picks, Bollywood actress Kareena Kapoor Khan never leaves a stone unturned. She is a true blue fashionista and her wardrobe collection screams opulence, class and gorgeousness.

When it comes to making major fashion statements with her sartorial picks, Bollywood actress Kareena Kapoor Khan never leaves a stone unturned. She is a true blue fashionista and her wardrobe collection screams opulence, class and gorgeousness. For New Year celebrations this year, she opted for a blingy emerald green designer gown by Elie Saab Fall 2022 collection and made heads turn. The actress styled her NYE attire with a diamond-studded necklace and strappy heels. Matching her outfit with a small clutch, she strutted down the hallway of her hotel and posed for some photos. The outfit featured a plunging neckline and a thigh-high slit. For her tresses, she opted for a bun and decided to go natural with her makeup. After a little research, we found that the outfit is currently available for purchase on the designer's official website. However, it has a hefty price tag that will burn a hole in your pocket. It's available for $2,850, which is approximately Rs 2,35,831. Kareena Kapoor slays in sequin designer gown worth a whopping $2,850 for New Year celebrations

Over the past couple of years, many of us have struggled with sleep due to stress and other challenges amid the Covid-19 pandemic. As per a study published in Sleep Medicine in November 2021 where 22,330 adults from 13 countries were surveyed, one in three participants had clinical insomnia symptoms and nearly 20 per cent had the conditions for insomnia disorder. These figures are more than double what they were pre-pandemic.

While increased dependency on gadgets after the pandemic has been seen to impact sleep patterns, psychological disorders like anxiety and depression among others also contribute to sleep problems. Most people require 7-8 hours of sleep per night. A good night's sleep is necessary for our mental well-being as it recharges and resets our minds for optimal functioning. The inability to sleep is a cause for worry as sleep deprivation affects our cognitive and emotional capabilities.

Experts say without proper sleep a person is more inclined to be tired, easily irritated, aggressive or unable to concentrate which affects their productivity and efficiency. If the sleep-related issues persist for days and are not addressed soon, it may lead to sleep disorders and can affect one's mental health.

Below are the most common reasons why you may not be able to sleep at night:

Increased gadget use

Increased dependence on gadgets for entertainment or relaxation after the pandemic could be one of the culprits behind impaired sleep. Being on the phone during bedtime could be eating into your sleep. Blue light emitted from phones impairs the release of the sleep hormone 'melatonin'. Melatonin is produced about 2 hours before bedtime, and the brain links the blue light emitted from screens to daytime, affecting the sleep hormone's effects.

Less priority to sleep

Have you ever compromised on your sleep cause you had to juggle work, chores, socialising and other tasks on your plate? Sleep is often not prioritised by many and is taken for granted, especially by youngsters. Having an irregular sleep schedule or staying up late can affect getting a good night's sleep. In the long term, it can also seriously affect one's day-to-day activities at work or college among others. A regular sleep schedule is highly beneficial as it enables optimal functioning and reduces stress.

Age-related issues

Senior citizens may face trouble sleeping due to age-related illnesses such as Alzheimer's disease. Other causes may include pain due to chronic illnesses, insomnia or the need to urinate often. Some also find that it gets difficult to fall asleep as they age. Many individuals keep waking up throughout the night or way earlier in the morning as less time is spent in deep sleep. Due to frequent disruptions in sleep, older people may feel tired or sleep-deprived even if their total sleep time remains unchanged. Taking warm milk or avoiding caffeine before bedtime and not taking naps during the day can help improve sleep for the elderly.

Caffeine and alcohol

Increased caffeine or alcohol intake before bedtime is not advisable. It is recommended to not take caffeine six hours before bed as it can affect the duration and efficiency of sleep. Alcohol can also result in disintegrated sleep as consuming an excessive amount doesn't result in deep sleep that makes one feel refreshed in the morning. Alcohol consumption before bedtime also affects sleep by causing dehydration.

Mental health problems or stress

Individuals suffering from mental health issues such as depression or anxiety can have a hard time falling asleep. They might sleep very little or sleep too much. Anxiety and sleep are also closely connected with each other. While anxiety can hinder sleep, one can also get anxious just worrying about not getting proper sleep.

Multiple life events such as relationship or health issues, family disturbances or work pressure can cause stress and make it difficult to get a good night's sleep. In response to stress, chemicals are released that raise the heart rate and increase alertness for the body to react to danger, also making it difficult to sleep.

Sleep disorders

Sleep disorders like insomnia, parasomnias or sleep apnea can seriously contribute to one's sleep problems. Insomnia makes it difficult to sleep for the required time or causes one to wake up too early. Insomnia can also be a symptom of mental health issues like anxiety or depression. Those with parasomnias experience sleep disruption due to movements and behaviours such as sleepwalking, sleep talking, sleep terror and sleep paralysis. Sleep Apnea often goes undiagnosed. People with sleep apnea often have trouble breathing as it stops and restarts multiple times during sleep.

Medications

As the effect of chemicals varies from person to person, some medicines for illnesses like asthma, heart problems, psychiatric disorders, thyroid conditions or cancer can interfere with sleep. Heart medications for high blood pressure or angina such as beta blockers might lead to insomnia. Over-the-counter medicines for colds or headaches and even painkillers also interrupt sleep and make one feel groggy during the day. While antihistamines can lead to drowsiness, decongestants can cause insomnia.

Exercise

A heavy workout within an hour of bedtime will make it difficult for an individual to fall asleep. Exercise raises the heart rate and stimulates the nervous system, making it tough for the body to relax. High-intensity workouts closer to bedtime makes the relaxation process even slower. A study in 1997 found that exercising in the evening led to delayed melatonin production 24 hours later, affecting sleep the next day.

Poor sleep environment

Noise or light in the bedroom might make it uncomfortable to relax or get uninterrupted sleep.

Street lights, night lights or even a cluttered room can translate into sleep problems. Light in the room during bedtime can upset the internal clock and make one unable to fall asleep.

Unusual work schedule

Working unusual hours like graveyard shifts or early morning shifts can affect one's circadian rhythm. The sleep one gets may not be very refreshing due to resting during odd hours. Sleeping against the clock, as one tries to sleep during the daytime when the body expects to be awake makes it difficult to get a proper shut-eye. Frequent or random rotations in shift timings make it impossible to have a regular sleep pattern. As per studies, proper shift rotations help employees be more productive and efficient.

Eating protein close to bedtime

Food like meat before bedtime may not result in a smooth sleeping session as protein takes a long time and more energy to digest. During sleep, the body's digestion process slows down by up to 50 per cent. It is advised to have carbohydrates for good sleep as it helps in the release of serotonin, known to aid sleep.

Practice proper sleep hygiene

Putting away phones or gadgets helps one to relax and get to sleep faster. Keep the phones outside your room- out of sight, out of mind. Replace your phone with an alarm clock if needed. Slip into a comfortable set of clothes to unwind. Ensure the room temperature is comfortable and there is not too much light.

Read something not very interesting or stimulating as it will help the body relax and feel drowsy. Try counting backwards if you're unable to sleep.

It is important to see a mental health professional if one is struggling with issues like depression, anxiety or other sleep disorders.

Eating protein close to bedtime Food like meat before bedtime may not result in a smooth sleeping session as protein takes a long time and more energy to digest. During sleep, the body's digestion process slows down by up to 50 per cent. It is advised to have carbohydrates for good sleep as it helps in the release of serotonin, known to aid sleep. Practice proper sleep hygiene Putting away phones or gadgets helps one to relax and get to sleep faster.

10 reasons you are unable to sleep

Study finds stress accelerates ageing of immune system, raises risk of cancer, other illnesses

Due to the recent surge of COVID-19 cases in China, the fear of the pandemic is back. Once again, people are worried about whether they will be able to survive another deadly wave or not. Governments across the world have started to take precautionary measures to curb the spread of the infection while many of us have started practising social distancing, stocking up on sanitisers and wearing masks in public places.

In all this, we often ask ourselves if contaminated food can spread the COVID-19 infection. Even though there isn't a definite answer for this, new research suggests that the virus can linger on some foods for days and sometimes even weeks.

According to research published by the Food Standards Agency (FSA) on their official website, the deadly virus can survive on some groceries and packaged food items more than others.

Virus lingered longer on food items with uneven surfaces like broccoli, peppers and raspberries. At an ambient temperature of 23°C, the virus can survive on broccoli for nearly five days. Meanwhile, on peppers, the virus can survive for about seven days if kept at a chill temperature of 6°C.

On cheese or cold meat such as cheddar cheese and sliced ham, the virus was detected even after a week when stored in a refrigerator. According to the researchers, foods high in moisture, protein and saturated fats support more prolonged virus survival. This highlights the importance of proper food handling to prevent any contamination by the virus prior to consumption.

The virus can be found for several hours on the surface of bread crusts and pastries such as croissants and pain au chocolat, however, a significant decline can be seen after 24 hours. The study noted that a coating of liquid egg wash could have an inhibitory effect on the virus since eggs contain arachidonic acid and other unsaturated fatty acids, which possess anti-viral properties.

The same study by FSA also revealed that viral infectivity declines within a few hours post-contamination on apples and olives. "We suggest that chemicals, such as flavonoids, present in the skin of apples and olives inactivate the virus," clarified authors C.A. Bryant, S.A. Wilks and C.W. Keevil, who contributed to the study.

Lastly, the research revealed that coronavirus can remain on plastic containers and cartons for days. However, they only survive on aluminium packaging like cans for a few hours.

Titled 'Survival of SARS-CoV-2 on the surfaces of food and food packaging materials', a laboratory-based study was conducted by FSA in association with The University of Southampton by artificially contaminating infectious SARS-CoV-2 virus onto the surfaces of different food items and their packaging. The researchers measured how the amount of infectious virus present on those surfaces declined over time.

To conclude their study, the researchers said, "There is currently no documented evidence that food and food packaging materials are a significant source and/or vehicle for the transmission of SARS-CoV-2. The potential implications for public health are unclear since inhalation of respiratory aerosols and droplets is considered to be the main route of SARS-CoV-2 transmission."

"It should be noted that foods and packaging considered as part of this study were artificially inoculated with SARS-CoV-2 and therefore are not a reflection of contamination levels found on these foods at retail. However, there is the possibility of transmission through contaminated food if the food is in direct contact with the mouth and mucus membranes," they added.

How safe is your food? Study reveals coronavirus can stay on some groceries for days

Americans will not get to eat these dishes in 2023: McRib, Choco Taco and other discontinued foods

We are well aware that foods having spiked rates of calories, fats and sugars are detrimental to our health even if their taste is very good. Despite knowing this, overeating is a common tendency among many. What triggers this tendency in the brain?

According to research published in 'The FASEB Journal', it is now known that a gene termed CREB-Regulated Transcription Coactivator 1 (CRTC1) is connected to obesity in humans. Mice lacking CRTC1 develop obesity, which suggests that CRTC1 in normal operation prevents obesity.

The precise neurons that reduce obesity and the mechanism they contain are yet unclear, though, because CRTC1 is found in all brain neurons.

To elucidate the mechanism by which CRTC1 suppresses obesity, a research group led by Associate Professor Shigenobu Matsumura from the Graduate School of Human Life and Ecology at Osaka Metropolitan University focused on neurons expressing the melanocortin-4 receptor (MC4R).

They hypothesized that CRTC1 expression in MC4R-expressing neurons suppressed obesity because mutations in the MC4R gene are known to cause obesity.

Consequently, they created a strain of mice that expresses CRTC1 normally except in MC4R-expressing neurons where it is blocked to examine the effect that losing CRTC1 in those neurons had on obesity and diabetes.

When fed a standard diet, the mice without CRTC1 in MC4R-expressing neurons showed no changes in body weight compared to control mice. However, when the CRTC1-deficient mice were raised on a high-fat diet, they overate, then became significantly more obese than the control mice and developed diabetes.

“This study has revealed the role that the CRTC1 gene plays in the brain, and part of the mechanism that stops us from overeating high-calorie, fatty, and sugary foods,” said Professor Matsumura. “We hope this will lead to a better understanding of what causes people to overeat.

Japanese research reveals what triggers our brain to indulge in binge-eating

As Bollywood actor-producer Kunal Kapoor hosted a lunch get-together on Christmas, a host of celebrities reached his Mumbai home to socialise and mark the special day. New parents Alia Bhatt and Ranbir Kapoor also reached Kapoor's house to celebrate Xmas with their friends.

Photos and videos of the couple posing outside the 'Rang De Basanti' actor's house have gone viral.

For the occasion, the 29-year-old actress opted for a wrap dress from Summer Somewhere. It featured a wrap front, kimono sleeves and a tasselled belt, making it a perfect festive outfit. She ditched expensive clothes from luxury labels for this floral mini dress, which is both affordable and stylish.

The dress is available on the site in 5 different sizes and it only costs around $85 (Rs 6,990).

Alia Bhatt gives lessons in affordable fashion; steps out for Christmas in wrap dress worth $85

Who wouldn't yearn for long, healthy nails throughout the year, but especially in winter when your hands are completely covered and your nails are the only thing left to add that glam quotient?

Take a look at a few tips to look after your nails, this winter.

1. Never leave your nails naked. When your nails have a coat of armour in the name of base coat, polish, and top coat, they're protected from water. They're also less likely to break and peel because they're protected.

2. Take 1 tablespoon of almond and castor oil, mix a little hand cream in it, and now soak your nails in it for about 15-20 minutes. Take your hands out and massage the mixture into your hands. This will nourish and moisturise your nails and hands too.

3. As with everything else, our nails lose a ton of moisture during the winter season, when the temperature begins to drop. Therefore, a lack of moisture can result in dry and brittle nails. So, keep your hands, fingers, and nails moisturised to prevent moisture loss from the cold weather, and safeguard your nails from splitting, peeling, and breaking. Use a good hand cream and make sure to apply a coat of that cream on each nail and massage it well.

4. Humidifiers work wonders in transforming dry, cold air into warm, moist air. Warm, moist air doesn't suck the life out of your skin, hair, and nails. A drugstore humidifier works fine, and if you don't have one (and don't want to buy one) you can boil a pot of water on the stove for at least some moisture.

5. It's common practice to cut, push back, or try to get rid of cuticles altogether, but cuticles aren't the enemy. In fact, the cuticle is the nail's natural protective seal. Moisturising the cuticles with cream or oil helps protect and strengthen your nails.

6. Wear gloves for better nail care when working with your hands. When you wear gloves, you protect your nails from getting dry and at the same time, keep dirt out of your nails. Doing so can protect your nails from breakage and cold weather.

7. With all that lotion you're applying now, you might find that your polish is chipping more, which leaves little unprotected pieces of the nail. That's because the oils in the lotion are interrupting your polish bond. Before you paint your nails, make sure to clean them off by rubbing alcohol or nail polish remover. You'll remove the surface oils, but you'll lock in the oils that have been absorbed into your nail, which is what matters. And always start with a base coat and end with a top coat. This protects your nails and seals in your polish.

8. Since you'll be wearing gloves whenever you go outside, plus you'll be wrangling more scarves and sweaters, it's especially important that your nails are free of ridges and cracks. Most of the ridges and cracks that lead to tears, snags, or breaks are the ones you can't even see. Filing them gently two to three times per week will make sure those edges stay smooth.

9. To give your nails the strength to endure the winter season it is really important to have a good diet. Walnuts, chickpeas, dark leafy greens, and avocados bolster nails.

10. A manicure once a fortnight is very essential for an elegant look. But before every manicure, remember to soak your hands in a little warm olive oil for 5 minutes.

11. Brittle and splitting nails are common during winter. Get a pack of gelatine, put 2 tablespoons of it in a glass of water and drink this regularly for strong nails.

12. Do light tapping of your nails on a hard surface, but not too hard.

Cuddle weather makes people crave love

The last two weeks of December are the busiest travel times of the year, mainly because of occasions like Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year. Long queues at the airport, expensive flights, overbooked hotels and a ton of traffic, there're so many reasons that can give us stress at a time when we just want to relax and have some fun. If we do not properly plan our holiday trip, several things can go wrong last minute.

To help you have safe and comfortable travel, we have listed some dos and don'ts of holiday travel. Take a look!

Dos and don'ts of holiday travel

Travel on non-peak days

Pack winter essentials for holidays

Consider getting a travel insurance

Avoid buying flight tickets last minute

Don't overpack

Don't forget to check the weather forecast

Travel on non-peak days

Look for flights on odd days or at odd hours if you wish to save some money. If most people are travelling on Friday or Saturday to celebrate Christmas and New Year in a popular tourist destination, book a flight for Sunday or Monday on cheaper rates.

Pack winter essentials for holidays

Carrying top-quality shoes, jackets, sweaters, hats and sunglasses is an essential part of your winter vacation packing checklist. Before closing your luggage, make sure that you pack travel essentials that you may need during your trip. Instead of buying everything at your destination location at a higher price, buy those items beforehand from discount stores or online.

Consider getting a travel insurance

Holiday travel can be extremely costly, especially if you're travelling with your whole family. There's chaos at airports, flights get delayed and uncertanities plague our mind. That's where insurance plays a pivotal role in taking most of our concerns away. So, experts believe that one must invest in a good travel insurance to ensure a hassle-free travel plan.

Avoid buying flight tickets last minute

Don't wait too long to buy your flight tickets. If possible, book them months in advance to avoid paying a hefty amount in the end. According to Skyscanner travel booking website, the best time to buy a Christmas flight is early October through mid-November.

Don't overpack

Since you have to attend holiday parties and pack for some Instagrammable posts, it can be easy to accidentally overpack. But, with the right packing tips, you can easily fit more clothes in lesser space. Avoid packing thick winter coats and several pairs of shoes for your holiday trip. Instead, pack thin layers and don your heaviest items on the plane to maximize room in your suitcase.

Don't forget to check the weather forecast

Before planning your itinerary, check weather forecast for the locations to avoid rain or snow storms. Since it's best to avoid travelling during bad weather, you must keep an eye on the weather itinerary for all the points of your holiday route.

'Frazzled English Woman' aesthetic is taking the fashion space by storm

A new study has revealed that making a conscious effort to recognize positive life events and successes while meeting for food and drink can leave you feeling more socially accepted. The research, published online in the Journal of Public Policy & Marketing, finds that celebrations with three conditions — social gathering, eating or drinking, and intentionally marking a positive life event — will increase perceived social support.

Perceived social support, according to previous research, is the belief you have a social network that will be there for you in case of future, negative life events. That belief is associated with health and well-being outcomes, including increased lifespan and decreased anxiety and depression.

“Many celebrations this time of year include two of the three conditions – eating and drinking while gathering together,” said Kelley Gullo Wight, assistant professor at the Indiana University Kelley School of Business and co-author of the study.

“Adding the third condition, making an intentional effort to recognize others’ positive achievements, is key. For example, take the time to congratulate someone for getting accepted to their first-choice university, or a work project that went well, or a new job offer. This will maximize the benefits to your well-being and the well-being of all the attendees at that holiday party,” she added.

Wight and her co-authors, including professors Danielle Brick of the University of Connecticut, and James Bettman, Tanya Chartrand, and Gavan Fitzsimons of Duke University, used behavioural experiments to survey thousands of participants over several years.

The research revealed that even if gatherings are virtual, if everyone has food and drink (no matter if it’s healthy or indulgent) and they’re celebrating positive events, this also increases a person’s perceived social support, and they can receive the same well-being benefits from it.

It also has implications for marketing managers or anyone looking to raise funds for a good cause.

“We found that when people feel supported socially after a celebration, they’re more ‘pro-social,’ and more willing to volunteer their time or donate to a cause,” said Danielle Brick, assistant professor of marketing at the University of Connecticut and co-author on the study, adding, “This would be a good time for non-profits to market donation campaigns, around the time many people are celebrating positive life events, like holidays or graduations.”

The researchers note that hosting celebrations that increase perceived social support can be especially beneficial at places serving populations more at-risk of loneliness and isolation, like nursing homes or community centres.

They also note the importance of understanding the well-being benefits of celebrations for policymakers looking to implement regulations or measures that could impact social gatherings, like Covid lockdowns, to avoid negative consequences to mental health.

They recommend that if organisers need to have virtual celebrations, they should involve some type of consumption and the marking of a separate, positive life event, so that people leave the celebration feeling socially supported.

Celebrations may benefit your health, well-being: Study

Netizens are bashing Harry Styles and Gucci for their new ad campaign, which features the English singer and songwriter posing next to a toddler's bed mattress in a teddy bear shirt. In light of the controversial Balenciaga ad campaigns which featured BDSM-themed teddy bears, many netizens are slamming luxury fashion brand Gucci for using "inappropriate imagery" for their promotions. And, some even noted that both brands are owned by The Kering Group.

Unveiling the 'HA HA HA' campaign on social media, Gucci wrote, "A performance piece starring Harry Styles and the Gucci HA HA HA collection, discover the campaign at the link in bio.”

On Gucci's website, the meaning behind the campaign was elaborated. "The House presents the Gucci HA HA HA campaign featuring British singer-songwriter and actor, Harry Styles. Arising from the friendship between him and creative director Alessandro Michele, play is at the very heart of the collection, which uses menswear as a tool of the avant-garde," it read.

"Captured by Mark Borthwick, the series of images sees Harry Styles showcase the 'dream wardrobe' defined by the eccentric use of romantic accents, whimsical prints, vintage details, and the expressive emotionality of the individual," Gucci's site concluded.

Unveiling the 'HA HA HA' campaign on social media, Gucci wrote, "A performance piece starring Harry Styles and the Gucci HA HA HA collection, discover the campaign at the link in bio.” On Gucci's website, the meaning behind the campaign was elaborated. Why are Gucci & Harry Styles facing backlash over ad featuring toddler's mattress?

You probably already know how important it is to keep blood sugar levels within the recommended range if you or a loved one has diabetes. Major, long-term health issues like vision loss, heart disease, and renal disease can be avoided or delayed with proper management of blood sugar, HbA1c, cholesterol levels, and blood pressure.

Diabetes can have a serious negative impact on the eyes, which can result in blindness or visual impairment. This is due to the fact that high blood sugar can destroy the capillaries in the eye's most delicate tissues, which transmit signals to the brain and enable clear vision. A permanent loss of vision may result from this retinal damage brought on by high blood pressure.

However, there is hope. One can avoid major eye damage by monitoring and regulating blood sugar levels as per their doctor's recommendation.

The following five actions can help safeguard vision during diabetes.

Understand Numbers

When blood sugar levels rise, the delicate blood vessels that nourish the most delicate areas of the eyes are often the first to sustain damage. High blood sugar specifically harms the retina. The thin tissue that makes up around 65 per cent of the back of the eye is called the retina. Many light-sensitive cells reside there, allowing the eyes to communicate visual information to the brain via the optic nerve.

The blood vessels that supply the retina are harmed when blood sugar levels rise. Vision blurring may result from this, either temporarily or permanently. Diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma, and cataracts are three distinct eye conditions that are quite common in people with diabetes. Timely detection and interventions can minimize such complications. By keeping track of blood sugar levels one can reduce the risk of these sight-stealing conditions.

Stop Smoking

Every physiological system is harmed by smoking, but diabetics are particularly vulnerable. Smoking harms the veins, arteries, and capillaries in the body, aggravating diabetes-related eye damage already present. Whether you're a smoker and have tried to quit or want to quit for the first time, don't give up. Talk to your doctor about your options.

Moving It

Exercise benefits all physical systems in the same way that smoking does, so get moving! After lunch, go for a couple of laps around the block. Take a few extra steps and park at the far end of the parking lot. Regular exercise can reduce your risk of developing diabetic eye disease since it lowers blood sugar levels. Put it on your calendar each week to remind you to make time for this appointment with yourself that will improve your life. Before beginning any workout regimen, discuss it with your doctor to find out the exercises they advise.

Focus on Eating Healthily

You are what you eat, we've all been told since we were young. Healthy eating leads to healthy eyes. Eat a diet that is well-balanced and contains meals that provide your body with good nutrients to safeguard diabetic eyes. Vitamins A, C, E, beta-carotene, lutein, omega-3 fatty acids, zinc, and zeaxanthin are some of them. Consuming a diet high in leafy greens, fatty fish like salmon, tuna, or mackerel, nuts like walnuts and almonds, beans, lentils, and mushrooms will help you reach this goal. Maintaining a low glycemic diet is important to manage blood sugar levels.

Yearly Dilated Eye Examination

The finest tip is reserved for last: get a full dilated eye exam from your ophthalmologist once a year, or more frequently if advised, to make sure that your efforts to control blood sugar are aiding in maintaining the health of your eyesight. Screening for cataracts, glaucoma, and diabetic retinopathy may be performed at this visit. Your pupils enlarge as your eyes dilate, allowing your ophthalmologist to inspect the retina, macula, and optic nerve up close. Your doctor can identify diabetic retinopathy in its early stages long before you have any symptoms by looking at these sensitive tissues.
Five actions to safeguard vision during diabetes

Auction house Christie's on Monday announced record sales of $8.4 billion in 2022, outshining its rival Sotheby's, which also posted its best-ever result at $8 billion for the year.

Christie's racked up $7.2 billion in auctions and another $1.2 billion in private sales, easily topping the $7.1 billion it made in 2021 as the art world emerged from the Covid-19 pandemic, which greatly hindered auction operations.

"In 2022, despite a challenging macro-environment, Christie's has achieved our highest ever global sales," chief executive officer Guillaume Cerutti said, referring to economic challenges sparked by inflation and the war in Ukraine.

He noted: "the resilience of the art and luxury markets, the remarkable success of several major art collections -- including the unforgettable Paul Allen sale -- and the expertise and hard work of our teams around the world."

Allen, the co-founder of Microsoft alongside Bill Gates, died in 2018. In 2009, he signed the "Giving Pledge" -- a promise to donate the majority of one's wealth to charity.

His extensive collection, spanning 500 years of art history, raked in a massive $1.6 billion. Five works went for more than $100 million each, including a Cezanne, a Van Gogh and a Gauguin.

And at a separate Christie's sale in May, a famed Andy Warhol portrait of Marilyn Monroe -- "Shot Sage Blue Marilyn" -- sold for $195 million, setting a record for a piece of 20th-century art.

- Who was buying? -

This year at Christie's, buyers from North and South America accounted for more of total sales as compared with 2021 -- 40 per cent of the value versus 35 per cent -- while Asian buyers were on the decline.

Nevertheless, according to French billionaire Francois Pinault, whose holding company Artemis controls Christie's, Asian buyers were "absolutely crucial" to the overall success of the Allen sale.

The auction house said its banner year was fueled by a "new generation of collectors": 35 per cent of all buyers in 2022 were first-time clients, and 34 per cent of them qualify as millennials.

Asia has the "fastest-growing base of new collectors," Christie's said.

Cerutti noted that cars and real estate did not figure in the results.

Last week, Sotheby's announced a year-end total sales projection of $8 billion, as compared with $7.3 billion in 2021. That data includes art and luxury items, but also homes and collector cars.

The auction house -- owned by French-Israeli telecoms magnate Patrick Drahi -- also noted that its client base in Asia was "rapidly expanding," and that those collectors were "spending more per person on average than collectors from elsewhere."

Auction house Christie's on Monday announced record sales of $8.4 billion in 2022, outshining its rival Sotheby's, which also posted its best-ever result at $8 billion for the year.

He noted: "the resilience of the art and luxury markets, the remarkable success of several major art collections -- including the unforgettable Paul Allen sale -- and the expertise and hard work of our teams around the world." Allen, the co-founder of Microsoft alongside Bill Gates, died in 2018. Also read: Los Angeles jury finds Harvey Weinstein guilty of rape and sexual assault in another trail - Who was buying? - This year at Christie's, buyers from North and South America accounted for more of total sales as compared with 2021 -- 40 per cent of the value versus 35 per cent -- while Asian buyers were on the decline.
The D&G corset belt is worth a whopping $12,999. It pairs well with bodycon dresses, white shirts and jumpsuits. The belt, which was originally displayed by Dior in their fall 2007 collection, has been a celebrity favourite for one and a half decades.

Several celebs such as Priyanka Chopra Jonas, Beyonce, and Jennifer Lopez have this belt in their wardrobe.

Last year, Priyanka wore this corset belt for the 2021 Billboard Music Awards. She paired it with a plunging neckline sheer D&G gown, which featured a dangerously thigh-high slit.

Jenna Ortega, who played the iconic role of Wednesday Addams in Netflix's coming-of-age supernatural comedy horror series, appeared on 'The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon' on Friday. Flaunting her new punk rock hairstyle in a dark amber colour along with a metal corset from Dolce and Gabbana, the actress grabbed eyeballs during the candid and fun chat. With the iconic corset belt from the brand's fall 2007 collection, the diva wore a black see-through shirt with a white mega collar, matching cuffs and an oversized black necktie. For her makeup, she opted for kohl-rimmed eyes, lots of mascara and a nude lip shade. To complete the look, she opted for a pair of Aminah Abdul Jillil black platform stilettos. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Jenna Ortega (@jennaortega) The D&G corset belt is worth a whopping $12,999. Elizabeth Hurley denies rumours she took Prince Harry’s virginity ahead of memoir revelation

Indira Ampiot, an 18-year-old communications student, was crowned Miss France 2023 on Saturday night after a parade of swimsuits, evening gowns and heels, concluding a pageant that had sought to update its image with newly expanded eligibility criteria.

Ampiot, the reigning Miss Guadeloupe, said she was living "a waking dream" after she was given the silver and blue tiara by beauty queen Diane Leyre.

During the contest, Ampiot had championed women with cancer and urged France on at the World Cup, concluding her speech with 'Allez les Bleus!'

This year's competition involved fewer eligibility requirements, which had previously restricted entry to women without children between the ages of 18 and 24 who were at least 1.70 metres (5.6 feet) tall.

Now, any woman over 18 years old of any height and child-bearing status can enter. And visible tattoos were allowed for the first time.

Transgender women who have female civil status records were also permitted to compete, according to Alexia Laroche-Joubert, president of the Miss France society.

The pageant still retained the genre hallmarks: talent performances, costume changes, pose striking and plenty of taffeta.

To fit this year's theme -- cinema -- contestants tucked into Wonder Woman onesies for one performance and sashayed in blue gowns in front of a 'Titanic' backdrop in another.

In the end, the pageant eligibility changes did little to soften some critics' views, with the French feminist group "Osez le féminisme" calling the modifications "white paint over a mouldy wall".

During the contest, Ampiot had championed women with cancer and urged France on at the World Cup, concluding her speech with 'Allez les Bleus!' This year's competition involved fewer eligibility requirements, which had previously restricted entry to women without children between the ages of 18 and 24 who were at least 1.70 metres (5.6 feet) tall. Now, any woman over 18 years old of any height and child-bearing status can enter. And visible tattoos were allowed for the first time. Transgender women who have female civil status records were also permitted to compete, according to Alexia Laroche-Joubert, president of the Miss France society.
