Schools in Lebanon are facing the brunt of a spiralling economic crisis. As families scramble to stay afloat, children pay the ultimate sacrifice and trade books for tools.

Lebanon's education system crumbles under economic woes | The West Asia Post

French President Emmanuel Macron's special envoy has hinted that France and its allies with review provision of financial aid to Lebanon if the latter did not find a way through a political deadlock that is going on for almost a year.

"The life of the Lebanese state itself is at risk," Jean-Yves Le Drian, a former foreign minister and now Macron's special envoy, told AFP.

Lebanon has been without a president for almost a year following expiration of mandate to Michel Aoun, Lebanon's former head of state. The feuding factions in the parliament have so far failed to elect a new leader even as the country faces unprecedented economic crisis. Lebanon is a former French colony.

Both factions in Lebanese parliament have put forward their candidates. The pro-Hezbollah faction is supporting former minister Sleiman Frangieh while the opponents are backing economist Jihad Azour. Le Drian said neither of the candidates had a chance to break the deadlock.

"Neither side can prevail. Neither solution can work," Le Drian said.

"It is important that political actors put an end to this unbearable crisis for the Lebanese and try to find a compromise solution through a third way," he added.

In Lebanon, the president of the country is elected by parliament. But currently neither side has parliamentary majority. More complications are added to the situation in the wake of accords that ended the civil war. Lebanon's president is always a Christian, the premier a Sunni Muslim and the speaker a Shiite Muslim.

Le Drian has said that he has plans to visit Lebanon next week and urge political parties to come together for a week of serious talks followed by voting in the parliament to elect a new president.

Over the last year, the Lebanese parliament has failed 12 times to elect a president.

Le Drian said that Lebanese officials are in "denial of reality" and if the situation persisted, France and its allies the US, Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Egypt may review financial support to Lebanon.

France hints withholding financial aid if Lebanon doesn't resolve political deadlock

Lebanon's largest Palestinian refugee camp has been rocked by violence since 7th of September. Fighting between secular Fatah movement and hardline Islamist groups intensified on Wednesday as a ceasefire lay shattered. At least seven people were killed on Wednesday evening bringing the total death toll to at least 16 since fighting resumed on the 7th of September. Hundreds of families have been displaced from the camp, seeking refuge in nearby mosques, schools and the Sidon municipality building. The refugee camp, Ain al-Hilweh, was rocked by five days of deadly fighting just weeks ago, in which at least 13 people had died. So, what has led to these violent clashes between rival factions in the largest Palestinian refugee camp in Lebanon?

As many as 16 people have been killed and around 100 people have been injured since the fighting renewed at the Ein el-Hilweh refugee camp in Lebanon last Thursday (September 7). According to a report by Al Jazeera on Wednesday (September 13), scores of civilians have been forced to flee to safer areas amid the failure of multiple ceasefire agreements. The refugee camp has been rocked by factional clashes since late July between the Palestinian mainstream movement Fatah and Islamist fighters.

On Wednesday, fresh clashes were reported at the camp which killed six and injured 13 others. On Tuesday too, clashes briefly broke out at the camp, the news agency AFP reported.

And last Thursday, fighting resumed following a month-long ceasefire, killing 10.

Fresh ceasefire collapses

On Monday, Lebanon's General Security agency announced a cease-fire with Senior Palestinian officials, including leaders of Fatah and Hamas expressing their full commitment to consolidating it. The leaders also agreed to "work to facilitate the return of those forced from their homes". However, the ceasefire collapsed on Wednesday.

The Ein el-Hilweh refugee camp is located on the outskirts of Sidon. It was created for Palestinians who were driven out or fled during the war that accompanied the establishment of the Israeli state in 1948.

By longstanding convention, the Lebanese army stays out of the Palestinian camps and leaves the factions to handle security. The camp is home to over 54,000 registered refugees and thousands of Palestinians who joined them in recent years.

The UN agency that deals with Palestinian refugees, UNRWA, said that the fighting has displaced hundreds of families.

Lebanon: 16 killed since last week's clashes in Ein el-Hilweh camp; civilians forced to flee to safer areas

At least six people were killed while over a dozen were injured in fresh clashes at the largest Palestinian camp in Lebanon on Wednesday (September 13), according to the Palestinian Red Crescent's Lebanon branch.

At least six people were killed while over a dozen were injured in fresh clashes at the largest Palestinian camp in Lebanon on Wednesday (September 13), according to the Palestinian Red Crescent's Lebanon branch. Imad Hallak from the Palestinian Red Crescent told news agency AFP that renewed fighting in the Ein al-Hilweh camp had "killed six people and wounded 13". Since the fighting broke out on Thursday last week, at least 15 have been killed. Ein al-Hilweh, the largest Palestinian refugee camp in Lebanon, located on the outskirts of the southern city of Sidon, houses over 63,000 people. It has been the ground zero for clashes, ever since the leader of the Fatah faction and four of his bodyguards were killed by another Palestinian group, identified as Jund al-Sham, in July. Lebanon's powerful Iran-backed Hezbollah group has urged for a halt in the fighting on multiple occasions but to no avail. Fatah's Azzam al-Ahmad and Hamas's Mussa Abu Marzuk also met late Tuesday (September 12) at the Palestinian embassy in Beirut and talked about maintaining a ceasefire but the situation turned pear-shaped quickly on Wednesday. Since then, clashes between rival groups over the administration of the camp have not been an uncommon phenomenon. According to the United Nations Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), since the clashes broke out, thousands have left the camp for safer pastures. Israel and Iran used to enjoy good relations but since the Islamic revolution of 1979, Israel and Iran are at a loggerhead. Well in the latest Israel has accused Iran of setting up an airport in southern Lebanon that Iran might use to attack Israel. The accusations were made by the Israeli defense minister in a televised remarks to an International Security conference hosted by a university.

Lebanon is currently grappling with an unprecedented economic crisis, and its politicians have been split on dealing with it. Political factions in Lebanon have been so divided that they have not been able to choose a new president for the last 10 months. Now in recent weeks, politicians have united to fight the LGBTQ+ community. According to a report by the news agency Associated Press late Friday (September 1), politicians and religious leaders in Lebanon have intensified a campaign, raising alarm over symbols and trends that might normalize queerness as an existential threat to society. The report said that last week, several dozen men from a Christian extremist group thrashed several people who were attending a drag show at a club in Beirut. “This is the venue of Satan!,” one member of the community yelled while filming on his mobile phone. “Promoting homosexuality is not allowed! This is just the beginning!,” the member added. From tolerance to crackdowns Lebanon was once known for relative tolerance regarding the rights of the LGBTQ+ community. However, this has changed recently as authorities have cracked down on free speech and the LGBTQ+ community. The Associated Press report on Friday said that the anti-LGBTQ+ campaign in Lebanon is being spearheaded by religious figures from the country's Christian and Muslim sects, as well as political officials. Currently, Lebanon does not have a law that clearly bans same-sex acts. However, Article 534 of the penal code prohibits sexual relations that “contradict the laws of nature” and has been used to penalize homosexuality. In July, a few legislators called for the abolishment of Article 534, but their attempts sparked a backlash from religious communities and also made some strange political allies. Call for movie ban, death penalty for same sex acts Last month, Lebanon's Culture Minister Mohammed Murtada requested for the General Security Directorate to ban the movie "Barbie", saying that it promoted homosexuality and transgenders. However, the directorate ruled the movie is permitted and it is reportedly expected to start showing this month. The report said that the Islamic Cultural Center submitted a request to the public prosecutor’s office to shut down Helem, the first LGBTQ+ rights organisation in Lebanon and the Arab World. The case was referred to the interior ministry, which has not acted on it so far. In June, the ministry restricted events connected with the Pride month. Last month, caretaker Prime Minister Mikati held a meeting with several government ministers and the head of the Maronite Church Cardinal Beshara Rai where they discussed homosexuality. Following the meeting, Mikati told reporters there was unanimity to abide by moral Lebanese and family values. Recently, Hezbollah's leader Hassan Nasrallah called for the death penalty on people engaged in same-sex acts, calling homosexuality “a clear and present danger.” Nasrallah accused non-governmental organisations (NGOs) of circulating books for school children that promoted homosexuality and called for such books to be banned. A distraction to solving economic crisis: LGBTQ+ group Speaking to the Associated Press, Tarek Zeidan, who heads Helem, said that politicians in Lebanon were scapegoating a vulnerable group to distract from their failure to solve the economic and political breakdown and infrastructure collapse. "Do any of these people have solutions for water, electricity, and health care? They have nothing. And when they have nothing to offer, they create an enemy." Amid economic crisis in Lebanon, politicians unite to go after LGBTQ+ community

The United Nations Security Council on Thursday renewed the mandate for its peacekeeping force in Lebanon for another year after tense debate around the troops' freedom of movement within the country.

The vote, which was originally scheduled for Wednesday but was postponed for further negotiations, came in under the wire Thursday only a few hours before the mission's previous authorization was set to expire.

The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), in place since 1978, is tasked with creating a buffer between Israel and Lebanon, which are technically at war.

Thursday's resolution passed with 13 votes in favour and Russia and China abstaining, and keeps the force in place until August 31, 2024.

The mandate is largely identical to last year's agreement on allowing freedom of movement for the approximately 10,000 peacekeepers stationed in the country, a point which has been contested both by the Lebanese government and the powerful pro-Iranian Hezbollah group.

The text "urges all parties... to ensure that the freedom of movement of UNIFIL in all its operations and UNIFIL's access to the Blue Line in all its parts is fully respected and unimpeded."

The so-called Blue Line refers to the frontier demarcated by the UN in 2000 after Israeli troops withdrew from southern Lebanon.

"UNIFIL does not require prior authorization or permission to undertake its mandated tasks and... UNIFIL is authorized to conduct its operation independently, while continuing to coordinate with the Government of Lebanon," the text added.

The United Arab Emirates had considered introducing an amendment, which was seen by AFP, that would have removed the reference to coordinating with Lebanese authorities, but ultimately did not bring it to a vote.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres had recently criticized UNIFIL's inability to fully access certain areas, including sites belonging to a Lebanese environmental NGO which the United States has claimed is a front for Hezbollah activities.

The head of the powerful armed Shiite group Hassan Nasrallah earlier this week warned against renewing the 2022 UNIFIL terms.

"A foreign armed force that moves on Lebanese territory without authorization of the government and Lebanese army, without coordination with the Lebanese army, where is the sovereignty in all that?" Nasrallah said in a televised speech.

In a letter sent to the UN, the Lebanese government had also called for a return to the 2021 terms of the force's mandate, which placed less emphasis on the mission's ability to move independently.

"(Thursday's) text unfortunately did not reflect all of our concerns," Lebanon's UN representative Jeanne Mrad said.

"This freedom of movement should be upheld, yes, but also should involve controls for many reasons," she added.

UNIFIL was set up in 1978 to monitor the withdrawal of Israeli forces after they invaded Lebanon in reprisal for a Palestinian attack.

It was beefed up in 2006 after Israel and Hezbollah fought a 34-day war and is tasked with monitoring a ceasefire between the two sides.

Considered a "terrorist" organization by many Western governments, Hezbollah is the only side not to have disarmed following Lebanon's 1975-1990 civil war, and it is also a powerful player in Lebanese politics.

Lebanese authorities claim to have busted Israeli spy network, arrest 2 suspects at Beirut airport

Why are young Israelis fleeing the country?

Two people were killed in Lebanon on the 9th of August in clashes between the Shi'ite armed group, Hezbollah and the residents of a Christian town. The deadly violence broke out after residents surrounded an overturned truck, on a major highway linking Beirut to the Bekaa valley and Syria, which they claimed was carrying weapons and ammunition for the Hezbollah. Both sides blamed each other for opening fire first and in the ensuing exchange of fire, both sides lost a member. One day prior to the incident, Tel Aviv had threatened to "return Lebanon to the stone age" in any war against Hezbollah, following weeks of friction with the group along the countries' border. Mohammed Saleh brings you this report.

Clashes between Shi'ite Hezbollah & residents of Christian town

Stockholm's foreign minister and a diplomatic source released a statement on Thursday saying that an attacker threw a Molotov cocktail at Sweden's embassy in Beirut following recent incidents involving burnings and desecrations of Islam's holy book Quran.

"We confirm that there was a Molotov cocktail thrown at the facade of our embassy last evening, which did not explode," a diplomatic source at the embassy said, requesting anonymity as they were not authorised to talk to the media.

The "perpetrator managed to run away", the source added.

Tensions have escalated between Sweden and Muslim countries after several protests involving public desecration of the Quran were reported in the Swedish capital Stockholm.

Lebanon witnessed demonstrations at mosques, while the chief of the pro-Iran Shiite Muslim group Hezbollah called for the Swedish ambassador to be removed from his position.

Swedish Foreign Minister Tobias Billstrom said "it was sheer luck that no one was injured" in Wednesday's attack and that staff were safe.

"The incident is currently being investigated," he said in a statement on Thursday, noting that "Lebanese authorities have an obligation under the Vienna Convention to protect diplomatic missions".

Late last month, two Iraqi men had set a copy of the Quran alight outside the Swedish parliament in Stockholm.

Salwan Momika and Sakwan Najem allegedly kicked and stomped on the holy book, then proceeded to set its pages on fire before slamming it shut, just like in a protest outside Stockholm's main mosque in late June. It had sparked outrage and condemnations across West Asia.

The same duo was also involved in a protest outside Iraq's embassy in Stockholm on July 20. On that day, they stomped on the holy book but did not burn it.

Turkey urges Sweden to take steps

Turkey's Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan, last month, urged Sweden to take substantial steps to stop incidents related to the burning of the Quran, as per a Turkish foreign ministry source.

In a phone call, Fidan told his Swedish counterpart Tobias Billstrom that the continuation of such "vile actions" under the garb of freedom of expression was 'unacceptable', the source said.

Denmark to put legal limits on protests involving Quran burnings

Denmark's government late last month said it would put legal limitations in order to stop the demonstrations involving the burning of Islam's holy book Quran in certain circumstances, citing security concerns.

"The burnings are deeply offensive and reckless acts committed by few individuals. These few individuals do not represent the values the Danish society is built on," Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen said separately in a statement.

"The Danish government will therefore explore the possibility of intervening in special situations where, for instance, other countries, cultures, and religions are being insulted, and where this could have significant negative consequences for Denmark, not least with regard to security," he said.

"This must of course be done within the framework of the constitutionally protected freedom of expression and in a manner that does not change the fact that freedom of expression in Denmark has a very broad scope," the Danish foreign ministry said in a statement.

Turkey urges Sweden to take steps Turkey's Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan, last month, urged Sweden to take substantial steps to stop incidents related to the burning of the Quran, as per a Turkish foreign ministry source. Also read: Explained | What's behind Maui wildfires? How has the situation gotten so worse? In a phone call, Fidan told his Swedish counterpart Tobias Billstrom that the continuation of such "vile actions" under the garb of freedom of expression was 'unacceptable', the source said. Denmark to put legal limits on protests involving Quran burnings Denmark's government late last month said it would put legal limitations in order to stop the demonstrations involving the burning of Islam's holy book Quran in certain circumstances, citing security concerns.
