Argentina's great Lionel Messi deserves to win the 2026 Ballon d’Or ahead of favourites Kylian Mbappe and Lamine Yamal, said fellow Argentine and Atletico Madrid’s manager Diego Simeone. Though he and his team finished runners-up, Messi’s individual brilliance at 39 was short of breathtaking. Messi.”&nbsp; For the record, Messi had the best World Cup in North America. After scoring six goals alone in the group stage games, including his maiden World Cup hat-trick, Messi scored twice in the knockouts before assisting twice in the crucial semifinal against England at Mexico’s Estadio Azteca. But he is clearly eager to leave a firm mark on this World Cup.Also Read - <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/mistaken-identity-why-switzerland-s-breel-embolo-was-sent-off-against-argentina-fifa-var-rule-explained-1783889937939">'Mistaken identity': Why Switzerland's Breel Embolo was sent Off against Argentina — FIFA VAR rule explained</a>Perhaps too eager, having at one point been a doubt for the tournament after missing the end of the season with Barcelona due to a hamstring injury."I was afraid it might be serious and, above all, that even if it wasn't serious, I could suffer a setback and end up missing the World Cup," Yamal admitted in late May.<h2>Anxiety?</h2>After coming off the bench in Spain's opening 0-0 draw with Cape Verde, Yamal started against Saudi Arabia and scored before being replaced at half-time in a 4-0 victory. He has started every game since, without adding to that solitary goal -- that might be getting to him."I think Lamine needs to calm the anxiety he sometimes has because he wants to show how important a player he is for us," Spain captain Rodri said Sunday."Given he was able to show that level of maturity at that European Championship, when he is two years older you are not so impressed by what he is able to do," he added. With Yamal not as decisive, Spain have lacked the deadly verticality that made them so hard to stop at the Euros.France, meanwhile, have rediscovered a cutting edge that evaded them at the Euros, and have the most thrilling attack at this World Cup.Mbappe, now 27, is the talisman and seems intent on leaving a legacy as an all-time World Cup great. With eight goals here, he is level with Lionel Messi in the golden boot race and is one behind the Argentine's all-time World Cup record of 21 goals.<h2>Third straight final?</h2>Having won the trophy in 2018 and scored a hat-trick in the 2022 final, Mbappe has a third straight final in his sights. He can therefore match the achievement of the great Brazil full-back Cafu, who played in three in a row from 1994 to 2002. Pele and Diego Maradona each only graced two finals. His apparent obsession with the World Cup may explain why he missed a chunk of the second half of the season with Real Madrid. As he nursed injuries, some supporters questioned his commitment to their club."I know people talk about the stats. I watch the TV too. But my only focus is on helping the team and getting us back here on July 19," he said after beating Sweden in the last 32 at the MetLife Stadium, the venue for the final."I have won a World Cup and been a runner-up. This team has done neither of those things, but it is the team with the greatest potential," he added after defeating Morocco in the quarter-finals.Yamal and Mbappe are already icons in their home countries and beyond, two young men representing the modern face of multicultural Europe.Mbappe has the greater experience, has already won the World Cup and is confident speaking publicly in English –- those factors help make him one of the faces of this tournament in the US.The dazzling Yamal is still catching up off the field, but his record against Mbappe on the pitch is impressive. They have met frequently across the Clasico divide in the last two years -- so far Mbappe has eight defeats and just two wins in 10 games against Yamal with club and country.

Lamine Yamal is hoping to emulate Kylian Mbappe by winning the World Cup as a teenager, but first his Spain side will have to get the better of France and their superstar captain in Tuesday's semi-final. When Mbappe scored in France's win over Croatia in the deciding match of the 2018 tournament, he was just 19 years and 207 days old. He therefore became only the second teenager to score in a World Cup final after a 17-year-old Pele in 1958. Mbappe's love affair with the World Cup began then, while this is Yamal's first experience of the competition. He has already had his big breakthrough in a major tournament, however –- Yamal's stunning goal in the Euro 2024 semi-final against Mbappe's France helped Spain to a 2-1 victory.

Yamal's return to the starting lineup provides a timely boost for head coach Luis de la Fuente after the winger missed matches due to a hamstring injury. The Barcelona star also made history alongside club teammate Pau Cubarsí before the match even kicked off. According to Opta, Yamal and Cubarsí became the first pair of teenagers to start a FIFA World Cup knockout match together for the same country since Brazil legends Pelé and José Altafini achieved the feat against Wales in the 1958 quarter-finals, ending a remarkable 68-year wait.&nbsp;Barcelona's influence was evident throughout Spain's starting XI, with Pedri and Dani Olmo also named in the lineup, giving the Catalan club four representatives. Rodri anchored the midfield alongside Pedri and Alex Baena, while Mikel Oyarzabal led the attack with support from Yamal. Spain's lineup featured Unai Simón in goal, with Pedro Porro, Aymeric Laporte, Pau Cubarsí and Marc Cucurella forming the defence as the European champions began their World Cup knockout campaign.

Barcelona's Champions League run ended with 2-1 loss against Atletico Madrid in the second leg of quarter-final on Tuesday (Apr 14). The Spanish giants lost the two-legged round of 8 with 3-2 aggregate loss, having lost the first leg 2-0 last week at home, Camp Nou. Both the matches saw one Barca player getting a red card, making them play with 10-man team. On Tuesday (Apr 14), Eric Garcia was handed the red card in the 79th minute - a controversial decision - which injured Barca player Raphina described at stealing by the referees. To add to the insult, Fermin Lopez suffered a horrific injury in the game as well.<h2>Why Garcia was given red card in Barcelona vs Atletico?</h2>In the 79th minute of the game, Garcia was found guilty of pulling down Atletico's Alexander Sorloth. Referee Clement Turpin checked the VAR review before sending centre-back out of the pitch. Have a look at the video below:

Holding nothing back, Raphina came out all guns blazing against Turpin and said to reporters after the game: "As far as I’m concerned, it was ‌a robbery, not just this match but the other one (the first leg) as well. Atletico's Marc Pubill had handled the ball and Barcelona appealed to UEFA against not getting a penalty. The European football body, however, rejected the appeal and deemed it inadmissible."Following the UEFA Champions League quarter-final first leg between Barcelona and Atlético, Barcelona filed a protest relating to a referee decision," read a short statement by UEFA on Tuesday. "The UEFA Control Ethics and Disciplinary Body has declared the protest to be inadmissible."<h2>Lopez injury adds salt out wounds</h2>Fermin Lopez tried to score the third goal for his team but instead got the boot, literally. He dived in the opposition box for a header but Atletico goalkeeper's boot found his face after the header went wide. The impact left Lopez gushing blood as the game stopped, allowing him to get medical attention and recover.

Spanish and Barcelona forward Lamine Yamal has hit back at Spanish fans after “anti-Muslim” chants were heard during Spain’s friendly match against Egypt on Tuesday (Mar 31). Yamal, Ballon d’Or runner-up in September, took a dig at his own fans while stating that he is also a Muslim. He termed the chants “intolerable,” with Barcelona Police now investigating the matter, which became a talking point after the friendly match.

Hansi Flick wasn’t pleased with Barcelona’s performance in his side’s 3-0 win over Mallorca on Saturday, saying the table toppers did not play at their level. Robert Lewandowski and winger Lamine Yamal was among the goal scorers, but Flick complained that the playing and passing were too slow for his liking. Meanwhile, Barcelona’s latest win stirred the team four points clear of second-placed Real Madrid on the Liga standings. Marc Bernal was also on the target late in the game as Barcelona enjoyed success at the partially opened Camp Nou stadium.&nbsp;"I was not happy... we were not on our level, the playing and passing was too slow," admitted Flick, who demanded more from his side going forward. "The first half was not how Barca want to play, (but) the second half was much better."&nbsp;Mallorca target man Vedat Muriqi came close early on as he slid in at the back post but hit the side netting, while Jan Virgili's shot was saved by Joan Garcia.&nbsp;Marcus Rashford added some urgency into Barca's game after a listless start, curling inches wide of the far post after cutting in from the left. A blocked shot from the England international led to the opener, with Dani Olmo knocking the rebound to Lewandowski to finish from close range.&nbsp;Rashford's dangerous free-kick was tipped onto the bar by Mallorca stopper Leo Roman, and Yamal missed from point-blank range as Jules Kounde sent the rebound into his path. The 18-year-old made amends in the second half with a superb shot from outside the area which left Roman with no chance. "He kept his energy for the second half and the goal. La Liga 2025-26: Yamal stars as Barcelona defeat Elche 3-1

Barcelona returned to owning the first position on the La Liga standings after beating Real Oviedo on Sunday (Jan 25) at home, courtesy of goals from Dani Olmo and the two wingers, Raphinha and teenage sensation Lamine Yamal. Following Real Madrid’s win on Saturday, which helped them take the pole position, Barcelona bounced back to sit at the top.&nbsp; On the other hand, Atletico Madrid also edged past Mallorca to strengthen its position at the top of the table, just eight points behind toppers Barcelona. Although Oviedo lingers at the bottom of the rankings, they did push the hosts to work for the win. &nbsp;Meanwhile, Hansi Flick’s side was back playing their best football following last week’s shock league loss, as attacking midfielder Dani Olmos opened the scoring for his team this time. "We have game after game, a lot of travel, we came back late at night (from Prague in midweek), almost no days off, and that's what you also have to see," Flick told reporters, defending his players after they struggled to make inroads in the first half. "In the first half we struggled a little bit, we didn't have the confidence we normally need... but in the end the second half was much better." &nbsp; The coach praised Yamal for his hard work in terms of pressing and said it was even more crucial than his impressive strike. &nbsp;"For me, much more important was the first goal, how he pressed, that he recovered the ball, that we scored the first goal because that was the key to open this game for us and get the three points," explained Flick. "It was more important than the third goal, but everyone loves to see this in football, and I'm happy he scored such a (great) goal." &nbsp;Barca could not get out of first gear in a dry first half, and their passing was unusually imprecise. Injured midfield maestro Pedri Gonzalez watched on from the stands with an unimpressed expression. They came out with renewed energy for the second half and soon took the lead. &nbsp; After Yamal and Raphinha pressed in the box, the ball broke loose to Olmo, who steered home. &nbsp;Oviedo gave away a poor second goal after 57 minutes, with Raphinha running on to an undercooked back-pass from David Costas and lobbing home. &nbsp;Barcelona's third was expertly taken by Yamal, as Olmo's cross was falling behind him, he produced an eye-catching sideways scissor-kick to wrap up the victory. &nbsp;"We are talking about a player from another galaxy," said Oviedo coach Guillermo Almada of Barca's 18-year-old star. “He has so much quality and delivers in key moments in games.”&nbsp;(With inputs from AFP)

Barcelona leads rivals Real Madrid by just one point in the Liga standings, having played 21 games each.

Copa del Rey: Torres, Yamal shine Barcelona edge Racing Santander to reach quarters

Barcelona winger and prodigy Lamine Yamal won two prizes at the 2025 Globe Soccer Awards in Dubai on Sunday (Dec 28), including the Best Forward and Best U23 Men's Player; however, what made headlines was not his list of achievements at this tender age, but his mentioning of Real Madrid and football legend Cristiano Ronaldo in his award speech, with CR7’s expression winning the internet. Even though Ronaldo and Barcelona have a history together, with it more to do with his former football foe Lionel Messi, he appreciating an emerging superstar from his rival club had everyone applauding the legend’s gesture.&nbsp;Yamal, 18, enjoyed a thoroughly successful year with Barcelona, winning several titles, including the coveted La Liga trophy. He also came close to winning his first major with Spain (Nations League) at the international level, only for Ronaldo’s Portugal to stand tall in the end on penalties. &nbsp;Often compared to his club’s great Messi, when asked who he would like to be equated to, his answer brought a smile to Ronaldo’s face. &nbsp;"In the end, it's best not to compare yourself to anyone," the 18-year-old replied. "Players like Cristiano Ronaldo did what they did because they wanted to be themselves and not compare themselves to others. I want to build my own path." &nbsp; As he said this, the camera panned towards Ronaldo sitting in the front row with his fiancée, Georgina Rodriguez, who couldn’t help but smile at this comment and even gave him his approval.&nbsp;Meanwhile, the Al-Nassr striker also had a successful night, picking up an award for himself – the Best Middle Eastern player and Top goalscorer of all time.&nbsp;<h3>When Ronaldo lauded Yamal</h3>Earlier this year, ahead of the Nations League Final, Ronaldo lent his thoughts on the Barcelona superstar, urging people to ‘leave him alone’ and that the attacking winger is vowed to win many Ballon d’Or awards.&nbsp; &nbsp;"He's only 17 years old... I repeat: he's a kid with a lot of room for improvement. He's a phenomenon, but we have to leave him alone; that's what I ask. Premier League: Enzo Maresca urges Chelsea's Estevao to ignore Lamine Yamal comparisons

Lamine Yamal's words before the Clasico caused more of a stir than his subdued performance on the pitch as Barcelona fell to defeat, and the 18-year-old star can take some valuable lessons moving forward. "It's normal. Normally he's very motivated and plays well. Today it was not so easy for him."&nbsp;Yamal has also now learned that sometimes he will get his comeuppance, which in his fledgling career he has not experienced much of. He lifted Euro 2024 with Spain last year and went on to win a domestic treble with Barcelona, as well as finishing second in the Ballon d'Or award voting. The forward has been quick to fire out jibes on social media, and last season said Real Madrid players can speak "when they beat me".&nbsp; However, in a rivalry as intense and storied as the Clasico there will always be swings of dominance, highs and lows.&nbsp;Barcelona won all four Clasico matches last season and Madrid players had that sentiment in mind as they sought out the teenager.&nbsp;"Talk is cheap," wrote Jude Bellingham, Real Madrid's match-winner, on an Instagram post in a thinly-veiled retort to Yamal.&nbsp;<h3>‘Make a scene’</h3>&nbsp;Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong criticised Carvajal, 33, for arguing with Yamal in public.&nbsp;"If Carvajal wanted to speak to Lamine, he could do so in private," said De Jong. "If he thinks he shouldn't do things like (those comments) he could call him. They're team-mates (with Spain), they know each other. Why do you have to make a scene on the pitch?"&nbsp; On the other hand, Real Madrid midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni said Yamal's comments were not particularly upsetting.&nbsp;"They're just words, and there's no bad intention. It motivates us a bit more, but if Lamine wants to talk, he can do so, there's no problem," Tchouameni told reporters. "When I was little, I remember the exchanges between Barca and Real players before matches, and we liked that. In the end, the match is played on the pitch."&nbsp;Yamal's performance was unusually gray, with the winger seemingly still affected by a groin injury he has been working to recover from.&nbsp; He rarely tried to beat his opponents one-on-one, in part thanks to Madrid's attentive defending.&nbsp;"He came from an injury and he needs rhythm, more games at the highest level," said Sorg, who also noted the teenager was getting extra attention from Barca's opposition this season. "The opponents try everything to defend very well, they adapt this season," continued Flick's assistant.&nbsp;"They often play two against one against him... he's young and he has to improve and we will help him."&nbsp; It would be a shame for Yamal to lose some of the spike which makes him interesting both on and off the pitch, but his disappointing afternoon will give him plenty to think about in the weeks and months ahead.&nbsp;Disclaimer: This story has been published from a news agency feed with minimal edits to adhere to WION's style guide. <h2>Ballon d’Or and its significance</h2>Monday’s ceremony will be the 69th edition of the Ballon d’Or ceremony, as the best individual players from both men’s and women’s sides will be crowned. The ceremony first took place in 1956 when French magazine France Football started presenting it to the best footballer of the season. Originally started as a top prize for only European footballers, the Ballon d’Or was expanded to include all players of any origin who have been active at European clubs in 1995.&nbsp;However, it was not until 2007 that the prize became a global accolade, meaning all professional footballers around the globe were eligible to win the top prize. The 2007 amendment also saw coaches and captains of national teams given the right to vote in the Ballon d’Or rankings before reverting to just journalists in 2016.&nbsp;Between 2010 and 2015, France Football and FIFA had had agreement, meaning the award was given to the best footballer under the title “FIFA Ballon d’Or” before reverting to the previous format where both awards were presented separately.<h2>How is the Ballon d'Or decided?</h2>The men's and women's Ballon d'Or is awarded based on three main criteria:1) Individual performances, decisive and impressive character2) Team performances and achievements3) Class and fair play&nbsp;Over the years, some of the greats of the game have gone on to win the Ballon d’Or, with notable names including Lionel Messi (eight times), Cristiano Ronaldo (five times), Luka Modric, Zinedine Zidane and others.&nbsp;ALSO READ | <a href="https://www.wionews.com/photos/from-rohit-sharma-to-virat-kohli-here-is-a-look-at-five-indian-batters-with-most-runs-in-asia-cup-odis-t20is-sachin-tendulkar-ms-dhoni-dhawan-1754123070628">From Rohit Sharma to Virat Kohli, 5 Indian batters with most runs in Asia Cup (ODIs + T20Is)</a>&nbsp;An honorary award, under the name Super Ballon d'Or, was awarded to Alfredo Di Stéfano in 1989, who was voted the best multiple-time Ballon d'Or winner ahead of Johan Cruyff and Michel Platini.&nbsp; In addition, Diego Maradona received an honorary Ballon d'Or in 1995 for his services to football, dubbed the Golden Ballon d'Or. Lamine Yamal gets into Messi's shoes with Barcelona's number 10 shirt takeover

Barcelona's sensation Lamine Yamal is under investigation for having a group of dwarfs as entertainers at his 18th birthday party over a week ago, Spain's Ministry of Social Rights informed AFP on Tuesday (July 15). The winger was partying with a private gathering in Olivella, some 50 kilometers west of Barcelona, that the ministry requested the prosecutor's office to investigate, in response to a complaint lodged by the Association for People with Achondroplasia and Other Skeletal Dysplasias with Dwarfism (ADEE).&nbsp;Yamal celebrated his 18th birthday on July 13, the day following his Saturday night party, which was attended by a number of his team-mates, as well as musicians such as Bizarrap and Bad Gyal. "The ADEE has lodged a complaint, so this ministry requested the prosecutor's office to investigate to determine if the law has been broken and, in that case, the rights of people with disabilities (have been)," Spain's Ministry of Social Rights was quoted saying to AFP.&nbsp;ADEE "publicly condemns the employment of individuals with dwarfism as entertainment" and said they would sue since it "perpetuates stereotypes, fuels discrimination, and undermines the image and rights" of individuals with disabilities. Attendees were not allowed to videotape during the event but a video has surfaced of a group of individuals with dwarfism entering the party.&nbsp;"No one treated us with disrespect, we were able to work in peace," revealed one of the performers anonymously on Catalan radio station RAC1, saying there were four of them there. “We're ordinary people who commit ourselves to doing what we love doing in a totally legal manner.”&nbsp;"For a couple of years these individuals (the ADEE) have desired to injure us, they desire to keep us from doing what we prefer, yet they have not provided any work or training to those who are impacted."All this commotion has arisen solely because it was Lamine Yamal's party."&nbsp; The entertainer explained that they dance, serve beverages and perform magic tricks in order to entertain people at the parties they perform at. Dominican rapper Chimbala, who is short in height, posted a video on Instagram singing on stage with Yamal, where Barca teammates Gavi and Alejandro Balde danced at the back. "Lamine Yamal at 18, best player in the world, signing my song 'Abusadora', thanks for having me at your (birthday)," Chimbala wrote.&nbsp;Yamal is on the shortlist for the Ballon d'Or after helping Barcelona to a domestic treble of La Liga, the Copa del Rey and Spanish Super Cup last year. Guests were not permitted to film at the event but a video has emerged of a group of people with dwarfism heading into the party

A stunning <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/lamine-yamal" rel="dofollow">Lamine Yamal</a> strike helped crown <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/barcelona" rel="dofollow">Barcelona</a> <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/la-liga" rel="dofollow">La Liga</a> champions with a 2-0 win at local rivals Espanyol on Thursday, with victory ensuring Real Madrid cannot catch them at the top of the table.&nbsp;Yamal's effort and Fermin Lopez's goal took Hansi Flick's side seven points clear of Los Blancos with two matches remaining, to clinch Barcelona's 28th title and complete a superb domestic treble.
Only the Champions League escaped an exciting young Barca side this season, as they won the league for the second time in six years, at Espanyol's ground again, just as in 2023.
Back then, celebrating Barca players were chased from the field by angry home supporters, but this time, Espanyol turned on the sprinklers to soak the jubilant visitors, who headed down the tunnel quickly.
Yamal opened the scoring after 53 minutes of a tense derby clash with a brilliant curling effort, before Lopez added another in the 95th minute to secure victory.
"It's time to celebrate," said Barca coach Flick, who said he would demand even more from his team next season.
"It's in our DNA (to want to learn), it's normal, and this is what I want from the players, that they always try to get better and they have this hunger, it's crucial."
Outside the stadium before the match, several Espanyol fans were hit by a car which drove into a big crowd, although none were seriously injured, and police said it appeared to be an accident.
Barcelona were seconds away from sealing their title triumph on Wednesday, but Real Madrid snatched a 95th-minute winner against Mallorca to delay the inevitable.
Flick's side started slowly in Cornella, with Espanyol, 16th, looking dangerous on the counter-attack and keen to secure their top-flight survival.
Wojciech Szczesny made a fine save to deny Javi Puado, who broke through on goal in Espanyol's best chance of the opening period.
Barca dominated the ball but failed to create any clear opportunities themselves in the first half.
<h2><hl2>Yamal breaks through</hl2></h2>
The Catalan giants have often blown teams away this season, approaching a century of goals in La Liga, but with the title on the line and a hostile crowd against them, they needed something special to break through.
That came from 17-year-old wing wizard Yamal, who zipped inside off the right flank and unleashed a rocket into the top corner from outside the box, in a replica of his goal for Spain against France in the Euro 2024 semi-finals.
It was the teenager's eighth La Liga strike of the season, but with goals in both matches against rivals Real and also in the visit to face Atletico Madrid, he has a penchant for the big occasion.
"I don't know what to say about Lamine, he scored an amazing goal, he's had an amazing season," said Lopez.
Barca's superb display in Sunday's Clasico, in which they beat their rivals 4-3 in a thrilling battle, effectively won them the title.
They still had to get it over the line against their neighbours, though, and that became easier when Leandro Cabrera was sent off for an elbow into Yamal's stomach.
Even though they had a player fewer, Espanyol pressured Barcelona heavily until Lopez drilled past Joan Garcia to end the hosts' resistance.
Espanyol fans pelted Barcelona players with bottles as they celebrated the goal, but as the league's youngest squad wrapped up a title that most believed was unlikely at best after Kylian Mbappe's arrival at last year's champions Real, they did not care.
"On the pitch, it was clear we could not celebrate there... two years ago (there was trouble)," Flick told reporters.
"It's also about respect for the fans here, so, of course, we celebrated in the dressing room, fantastic, the players could do that, really good.
"Tomorrow I will stand a little bit in the background, and I also will enjoy it. When I see the people are happy and smiling, I will enjoy it."

A stunning Lamine Yamal strike helped crown Barcelona La Liga champions with a 2-0 win at local rivals Espanyol on Thursday, with victory ensuring Real Madrid cannot catch them at the top of the table. Yamal's effort and Fermin Lopez's goal took Hansi Flick's side seven points clear of Los Blancos with two matches remaining, to clinch Barcelona's 28th title and complete a superb domestic treble. "It's in our DNA (to want to learn), it's normal, and this is what I want from the players, that they always try to get better and they have this hunger, it's crucial." Outside the stadium before the match, several Espanyol fans were hit by a car which drove into a big crowd, although none were seriously injured, and police said it appeared to be an accident. Yamal breaks through The Catalan giants have often blown teams away this season, approaching a century of goals in La Liga, but with the title on the line and a hostile crowd against them, they needed something special to break through. Barcelona beat Espanyol to win La Liga 2024/25, complete season with three trophies

<a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/barcelona" rel="dofollow">Barcelona</a> mounted a spectacular comeback to beat <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/real-madrid" rel="dofollow">Real Madrid</a> 4-3 in La Liga on Sunday and move to the brink of the title after overcoming a hat-trick from Kylian Mbappe.
The France striker threatened to haul Madrid back into the title race but Raphinha's double and goals from Lamine Yamal and Eric Garcia gave Barcelona a seven-point lead on the reigning champions with three matches remaining.
Hansi Flick's side were knocked out of the Champions League in the semi-finals by Inter Milan on Tuesday and risked their season collapsing if they were beaten by Madrid, but they resisted after Mbappe's early brace.
Barcelona battled back to claim a fourth Clasico victory from four meetings this season, showing their dominance over Carlo Ancelotti's side.
"We've opened up an important gap, it was key to win this game after the Champions League (defeat), the fans have forgotten it and so have we, let's enjoy this," Yamal told Movistar.
"It was important to win today to bring the league title closer and it went very well, we're very happy."
Real Madrid are set to finish the season without a major trophy.
"We have to defend better, that is quite evident from today's game, we defended badly and that's that," said Ancelotti.
"Mbappe did well... in an attacking sense the team had clear ideas, but we could have defended better."
Madrid had made the perfect start to what is expected to be the Italian coach's final Clasico at the helm.
Mbappe earned a penalty when he was scythed down by Barcelona goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny, although the Catalans complained in vain the forward was offside in the build-up.
The striker beat Szczesny, who dived the right way and got his fingers to it, but could not keep it out.
In the 14th minute Mbappe doubled Madrid's advantage with a lethal finish after Vinicius Junior played him through, with Barcelona complaining again about a perceived foul on Yamal earlier in the move.
It was his 26th La Liga strike, taking him past Barcelona's Robert Lewandowski on 25 at the top of the scoring charts, and his 38th of the season across all competitions, beating Ivan Zamorano's club record of 37 in a first season with Los Blancos.
Just as they have done on so many occasions this season, Flick's spirited young Barcelona fought their way back in front with a stirring comeback.
Thibaut Courtois tipped Gerard Martin's drive over, and from the corner Garcia headed home Ferran Torres' flick-on.
Torres flicked wide from close range with an improvised effort and Fede Valverde was booked for a crunching tackle on whirlwind teenager Yamal.
Madrid could not stop the 17-year-old star from levelling with a cultured bending effort beyond Courtois after Torres laid the ball off to him in the box.
<h2><hl2>Raphinha brace</hl2></h2>
Two minutes later, Raphinha sent Barca ahead, with Pedri threading a pass through for the Brazilian winger to drill home.
Mbappe thought he had won another penalty when he fell under pressure from Frenkie de Jong but VAR revealed an offside in the build-up.
Moments later, Raphinha netted his second, picking Lucas Vazquez's pocket on the edge of the area, exchanging passes with Torres and beating Courtois.
Mbappe netted from an offside position before the break, bringing a rollercoaster first half to a close.
Yamal had a goal ruled out for offside early in the second half as Barcelona looked to put their arch-rivals to the sword.
However Vinicius got behind Barca's high line and he fed Mbappe for his hat-trick.
Barcelona appealed for a penalty when Aurelien Tchouameni blocked Torres' shot with his arm, but after watching the incident again the referee decided not to award a penalty.
Real Madrid substitute Victor Munoz might have levelled late on but fired high and wide when sent through, and Szczesny denied Mbappe, who had another strike ruled out for offside.
Barcelona thought they had wrapped up their win with a superb Fermin Lopez solo effort but it was harshly disallowed for handball against the midfielder.
Madrid had no time left to fight back though, and Barcelona, who last won the league in 2023, could seal the title as early as Wednesday, should Los Blancos stumble against Mallorca.

Barcelona edge Real Madrid in thriller to move to brink of La Liga title

Lamine Yamal scored a brilliant goal but also missed a penalty on another night of growth for Barcelona's teenage star as Spain reached the Nations League semi-finals.
The 17-year-old thrilled during the 3-3 draw against the Netherlands on Sunday at a sold-out Mestalla stadium in Valencia, even if he ended up with a bittersweet feeling as Bart Verbruggen denied him in the shoot-out.

Spain progressed 5-4 on penalties after a wildly entertaining 5-5 aggregate tie, another stepping stone on his journey to the top of the game.
A key player for Barcelona and already having won Euro 2024 with his country, a day after turning 17 last July, Yamal's incursions on the right flank draw spectators to their feet and comparisons to Argentina great Lionel Messi.
The loudest roar as the home team was read out by the Mestalla stadium announcer was reserved for his name, and "Yamal" was printed on the back of more than a fair share of the Spain shirts flooding through the gates.
The highlight of the night for many was Yamal's stunning extra-time strike, controlling Dean Huijsen's lofted pass with a deft flick, turning to eke out a yard of space and bending the ball past Verbruggen in the Netherlands goal.
It was the perfect riposte to criticism that appeared after a relatively quiet night in the 2-2 quarter-final first leg draw in Rotterdam last week.&nbsp;
"I see things that are starting to bother me a little... shorts a little lower, not making much of an effort," said former Netherlands international Rafael van der Vaart.
Yamal responded on the pitch, and then off it with a post on Instagram following the game.
"Shorts down, a goal, a missed penalty and into the semi-finals, come on Spain!" wrote Yamal on the social media platform, including a photo of Van der Vaart's face.
Yamal is not shy of firing back at his critics, as he showed with a jab at Adrien Rabiot during the Euros, after helping eliminate France by scoring a wondergoal.
Spain will face France again in the Nations League semi-finals as they bid to defend the title they won for the first time in 2023.
<h2>'What a disaster'</h2>
Yamal's Barcelona team-mate Pedri said the teenager would bounce back from his penalty miss, a surprisingly tame effort kept out by Verbruggen.
"I told him it was a terrible penalty," laughed Pedri, who netted Spain's winner from the spot after Donyell Malen missed for Netherlands.
"But no, you learn from these situations, he doesn't let the pressure affect him and you have to take a penalty to be able to miss it.
"How calm he is has always surprised us, it's like pressure doesn't exist for him when you see the way he dribbles so easily, and the way he plays.
"We have to take care of him and most of all, enjoy having him."
Yamal has four goals in 19 Spain appearances, but plays with the self-assurance of a superstar at their peak.
Defender Marc Cucurella also joked about Yamal's penalty miss -- with Spain players' willingness to laugh about it showing they believe the winger can take the jibes on the chin.
"I saw him go up to take it with confidence and I thought, he'll score here for sure," said the left-back.
"Then I saw how he hit it and I said 'What a disaster!'"
Penalties aside, Yamal, and Athletic Bilbao winger Nico Williams on the opposite flank, help make Spain a hugely exciting side to watch.
"We always want to attack, and attack a lot," said Spain coach Luis de la Fuente.
"That's why the fans have enjoyed this so much, the game was out of control in some moments, it's a spectacle to see."
The coach, who previously said Yamal had been 'touched by a magic wand', acknowledged the youngster is still growing.
"Lamine is disappointed (with the penalty) but he's happy," added De la Fuente.
"He gave us what we needed from him but he's still growing and maturing."

After winning the Spanish Super Cup in Saudi Arabia last weekend by thrashing Real Madrid, Barca came into the cup clash with restored confidence, having stuttered in the final weeks of 2024.
"We have to continue like this," said Barca defender Pau Cubarsi, also 17, who came through the club's youth academy with Yamal.
"I've been enjoying watching him for many years, now the whole world is, and he deserves it all."

Dani Olmo, whom Barcelona controversially obtained a temporary playing license for last week, started at false nine in place of the Polish veteran.
The Spaniard helped create the opening goal at the sharp end of a neat team move, with Gavi tucking home in the second minute.
Olmo fired over and hit the post during a particularly busy opening period for the former RB Leipzig playmaker.
Kounde smashed in Barcelona's second after the sublime Yamal dinked a ball through to him on the right of the box.
It was an area the Catalans exploited time after time, with Kounde's second goal from a similar position disallowed for a marginal offside.
At the other end goalkeeper Inaki Pena made a fine save to deny Vitor Roque, on loan at Betis from Barcelona.

<h2>Atletico ease through</h2>
Early in the second half Yamal finished clinically after Frenkie De Jong lobbed the ball through to him on the right of the box, but it was disallowed for an offside in the build-up.
Minutes later Barcelona scored their third anyway, with Yamal's surging run from deep in his own half ending up with his deflected effort falling to Raphinha, who struck.
Barcelona netted their fourth when, again exploiting the same part of Betis' area, Olmo chipped a pass to substitute Ferran Torres to finish emphatically.
Yamal finally got on the scoresheet himself after breaking in from the right wing and finishing at the near post.
Roque pulled one back from the penalty spot in the final stages for Betis after Kounde stood on Jesus Rodriguez's foot in the penalty area.
Atletico coach Diego Simeone rested some of his regular starters, including Antoine Griezmann, as his team ran out comfortable winners at Elche.
Alexander Sorloth struck twice for the Rojiblancos in the first half, and the visitors were further bolstered when Elche's Nico Fernandez was sent off early in the second half.
Rodrigo Riquelme extended Atletico's lead with a fine strike from distance and Julian Alvarez rounded off the rout.&nbsp; On Thursday Spanish champions Real Madrid host Celta Vigo and cup holders Athletic Bilbao welcome Osasuna.
