<p>While sportspersons have strictly followed the lockdown norms while spreading awareness about the COVID-19 on various social media platforms, the Indian Sports Ministry has decided to allow athletes to resume their regular training regimes in a phased manner.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Earlier, Rijiju had said that proper planning will be needed to ensure sports remain sustainable when played behind closed doors in near future. Rijiju had even stated that they need to identify the players and teams who have qualified for the Tokyo Olympics or are going to take part in the qualification competitions of the Games, which was pushed to 2021 amid the COVID-19 pandemic.</p>

<p>"First of all, we will identify those players and teams who have qualified for the Olympics. Second, those who are going to play the Olympic qualification competitions, we will allow these athletes to practice," Rijiju had said.</p>

<p>"We won't be able to open camps for those who are not in qualification reckoning soon. Maybe that will go beyond August or September," he had added.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Notably, all sporting activities in India have remained suspended since mid-March due to the outbreak of novel coronavirus which has claimed over 2,200 lives in the country.<br />

<p>The International Olympic Committee (IOC) and Japan Prime Minister Shinzo Abe on Tuesday announced postponement of the Games, scheduled for July-August, because of the pandemic which has brought the world to a standstill.</p>

<p>"I welcome the decision of IOC to postpone #Tokyo2020 in view of the global pandemic. It's necessary for the well being of athletes from across the world," Rijiju said in a tweet late on Tuesday.</p>

<p>He also assured the Tokyo-bound Indian athletes of government's full support to ensure that their preparations are not impacted by the current situation.<br />
India was on Tuesday placed under a 21-day lockdown to contain the spread of the deadly virus, which has caused close to 19,000 deaths worldwide.</p>

<p>The number of cases of novel coronavirus cases in India rose to 341 on Sunday after fresh cases were reported in various parts of the country, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW) said.</p>

<p>Sports Minister of India, Kiren Rijiju on Tuesday announced that the Sports Authority of India (SAI) has decided that all academic training in the National Centre of Excellence and Sai Training Centres (STCs) have been suspended till further notice amid coronavirus pandemic. Rijiju further announced that all national camps have been postponed except for those who are training as a part of 2020 Tokyo Olympics preparations.</p>

<p>Rijiju took to social media platform Twitter to announce the latest development while adding that this move is a just a temporary and precautionary step for the safety of Indian athletes. Rijiju appealed the young athletes to not get disheartened by the sudden halt of training camps. The Indian sports minister concluded by saying that the academic training will soon resume after situation gets better in India.</p>

<p>While referring to the comparisons that were drawn between Gowda and Bolt, Kambada cautioned against it and claimed that the Olympic teams have improved scientific methods to measure speed.</p>

<p>Many experts and responders on social media dubbed the comparison ''inaccurate'', for Gowda's speed was perhaps accelerated by the buffaloes that were draggin him.</p>

Kiren Rijiju calls 'India's Usain Bolt' Srinivasa Gowda for trials

<p>Stating that higher education in India is undergoing a major transformation, Union minister Kiren Rijiju said on Saturday that Prime Minister Narendra Modi envisions that the country's huge demographic dividend is capitalised.</p>

<p>Speaking at the sixth convocation of the National Institute of Technology (NIT) in Yupia near Itanagar, the Union Minister of State (Independent) for Sports and Youth Affairs said that Modi's 'Act East' policy has ensured that the Northeast is at par with the rest of India.</p>

<p>"NIT Arunachal Pradesh plays an increasingly important role in this vision by setting the highest standards of imparting quality education in the country. The Centre has allotted an additional amount of Rs 430.56 crore to the institute this year," Rijiju said.</p>

<p>He said the NIT should partner with foreign universities for faculty and student exchanges.</p>

<p>"Such type of institutional linkages confer the greatest benefit on the country's academic community and are crucial to the inflow of knowledge into the country," the minister said.</p>

<p>Rijiju further said that beyond the academic domain, higher educational institutes in the country have a larger role to play in the progress of the regions where they are based.</p>

<p>"They have to establish a connection with regional stakeholders, identify problems hindering development and use their professional expertise, academic and research temperament to find sustainable and implementable solutions to the problems," he advocated.</p>

<p>Rijiju appealed to the graduating students to make the best use of the knowledge and wisdom they have gained to attain professional and personal success.</p>

<p>Quoting Mahatma Gandhi, he said, "Live as if you were to die tomorrow, learn as if you were to live forever."</p>

<p>"I am looking forward to hearing about multiple start-ups being founded and run by the students from the graduating class today," the minister said.</p>

<p>Director of NIT Meghalaya Bibhuti Bhusan Biswal, who was also present in the convocation, exhorted the graduating students and said that speed of decision making and velocity of action are necessary attributes for high performance.</p>

<p>Speaking at the function, NIT Arunachal Pradesh Director Pinakeswar Mahanta highlighted various achievements of the institute in the past few years.</p>

<p>Altogether 226 students -- BTech (153), MTech (50), MSc (11), MBA (03), M Phil (03) and PhD (06) -- were awarded degrees.&nbsp;</p>

<p>India's sports ministry has said 35 complaints of <a href="https://www.wionews.com/entertainment/judge-on-harvey-weinstein-rape-trial-tells-jurors-to-not-use-case-to-make-a-statement-on-metoo-274774">sexual harassment</a> had been lodged relating to alleged incidents at national training centers from 2011 to 2019.</p>

<p>The ministry said 27 of the complaints were made by athletes against coaches at centers run by the Sports Authority of India (SAI).</p>

<p>"So far, a penalty has been imposed on 14 people who have been found guilty, and inquiry is under progress in 15 cases. The rest of the cases are either acquitted by the concerned court or could not be established," the ministry said in a statement.</p>

<p>Sports minister <a href="https://www.wionews.com/business-economy/mou-signed-between-forum-of-indian-food-importers-and-neea-to-strengthen-trade-ties-271667">Kiren Rijiju</a> said he has asked the SAI to complete the probe into the pending cases over the next four weeks.</p>

<p>"There is zero tolerance for sexual harassment on the SAI campus. The inquiries that are underway will be speeded up," he said in a statement.</p>

<p>"We will ensure that the already existing system of addressing sexual harassment cases and protecting our athletes&nbsp;is made more robust.</p>

<p>"Athletes spend their formative years at SAI centers and it is our foremost responsibility to give them a safe environment."</p>

<p>Former SAI director-general Neelam Kapur said the actual number of such incidents could be higher.</p>

<p>"I do believe that many incidents of sexual harassment are not reported. It is both the fear of retribution and the lack of awareness about the redress system," Kapur told reporters.</p>

<p>"Therefore it is incumbent on the leadership to ensure that all reported cases are dealt with seriously, expeditiously and when proved the punishment is exemplary.</p>

Received over 30 complaints of sexual harassment from 2011-2019: Sports Minister Kiren Rijiju

<p>Forum of India Food Importers (FIFI) and North East Entrepreneurs Alliance (NEEA) agreed to build cooperation by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) during recently organized North East Food Show 2019 by the government of Meghalaya and SIAL Paris.<br />

<p>The Birmingham organising committee has dropped shooting from the programme because of no suitable space, prompting a threat from the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) to boycott the Games.</p>

<p>In a letter on Tuesday, Rijiju asked Morgan, secretary of state for sport, to intervene and bring back a sport that has been part of the Commonwealth Games since 1974.</p>

<p>"It seems the decision to exclude shooting is based on the premise that shooting had never been a compulsory sport and there is no venue available for holding shooting events," Rijiju wrote to Morgan.</p>

<p>"The Indian public takes a keen interest in shooting. In a constructive gesture, the International Shooting Federation (ISSF) has offered to share the cost for the inclusion of shooting in Birmingham CWG."</p>

<p>Seeing the downgrading of diplomatic ties, AITA Secretary-General Hironmoy Chatterjee had said that the International Tennis Federation (ITF) will decide whether India plays against Pakistan or not.</p>

Let the ITF decide on the situation primarily, if they find the situation is very sensitive as Pakistan have severed all diplomatic ties with India, then they will not issue a visa. If they do not issue the visa, so how would we go there. In that case, Pakistan will get penalised and the tie will get shifted to a neutral venue," Chatterjee had told ANI.</p>

<p>Union Sports Minister Kiren Rijiju on Saturday said that&nbsp;Sports Bill will be a reality soon and added that he will ensure that it covers all sports bodies.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Speaking exclusively to WION,&nbsp;Rijiju also spoke at length about Davis Cup.&nbsp;</p>

<p>He said that for any bilateral sporting event with Pakistan, permission is required from the government but for any multilateral international sports activity, the government does not have any leverage as India is a signatory to international sporting regulations like Olympic Charter.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"Davis Cup is not a bilateral event, we must understand this," he added.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Davis Cup is expected to take place in Pakistan and the situation has become more complicated after Pakistan immaturely reacted to India's move to do away with article 370.</p>

<p>The minister also said that Sports and Youth Affairs Ministry would organise special events for two newly created Union Territories of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"I would organise national integration camps in Jammu and Kashmir and better sports infrastructure would be provided in Ladakh. I have also decided to recognise ice hockey for Ladakh," said Rijiju.</p>

<p>"We are disappointed by the decision but at the same time, we need to ensure that other sports do not suffer. I'm going to call a meeting on this issue very soon," he said.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Rijiju also spoke on the fitness campaign, the government is going to launch by the end of this month. He said that sports and fitness go hand in hand and by this campaign, the government wants to ensure that people at large adopt a healthy lifestyle.</p>

<p>Cricket coming under NADA &nbsp;is a 'welcome move', he added.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"I have already sent my official greetings to the coach and Indian team. Since India is already there in the semi-finals, we hope and looking at the performance of our players, we are extremely optimistic and hopeful that India will be able to lift the World Cup once again and will bring the World Cup back home for the third time," Rijiju told reporters.&nbsp;</p>

<p>India atop the points table in the ongoing premier tournament and will face fourth-positioned New Zealand in the semi-final on July 9.&nbsp;</p>

For that matter, we will have to consult the MEA and the PMO. But when it is a multi-lateral tournament like the World Cup, then there should be no issue. But I cannot comment on bilateral because it is a little sensitive."&nbsp;</p>

<p>Moreover, Rijiju also expressed his dissatisfaction with India's performance at the Olympics.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"I have already said that I am not satisfied with our performance at the Olympics. Our players have worked hard and some players brought medals for us. But if we compare it with the ability and power that India have, I am not satisfied with it," he said.&nbsp;</p>
