Chinese Vice-President Han Zheng's possible presence at the upcoming coronation of UK's King Charles the Third is causing waves in British politics. Several British leaders have disapproved the presence of Han Zheng, who oversaw Hong Kong affairs for the Chinese government during the years that saw the creation of national security law and the stifling of civil freedoms in the former British colony.

Han Zheng was recently appointed as Chinese President Xi Jinping's deputy. He was in-charge of Hong Kong affairs from 2018 to March this year. Politico has reported that Han may represent China during the coronation of King Charles the Third.

As quoted by news outlet The Guardian, former Conservative Party member and long-standing China critic Sir Iain Duncan Smith said Han Zheng was "responsible for trashing" the Hong Kong treaty between the UK and China as he oversaw crackdown against pro-democracy protests.

“This is the man responsible for trashing the international treaty – the Sino-British accord. In the course of which the Hong Kong authorities have persecuted peaceful democracy campaigners," said Duncan Smith as quoted by The Guardian.

“Having this man here, given his role is outrageous.”

Tim Loughton, a member of the Inter-Parliamentary Alliance on China said that Han Zheng's presence at the coronation will be "an insult to the freedom-loving people” of Hong Kong.

“We have lobbied ministers not to allow this. It would be an insult to the freedom-loving people of HK,” said Loughton. He was quoted by The Guardian.

The state crackdown against the pro-democracy protests had strained&nbsp;relations between the UK and China. UK even created a visa scheme that enabled Hong Kongers to seek asylum in the UK. Many pro-democracy lawmakers in Hong Kong took this option and went to the UK.

If Han Zheng remains present at King Charles' coronation, it is likely to give Conservative Party leaders more ammunition to criticise China. The Tories are already unhappy about the British government's approach to China.

UK Foreign Secretary James Cleverly said earlier this week that UK must take the path of direct engagement with China. He called for a constructive but robust relationship.

British leaders had raised serious concerns when the invitation for Queen Elizabeth's funeral was extended to Chinese representatives last September.

In the end, China was represented by Wang Qishan, predecessor of Han Zheng, at the queen's funeral. In addition to this, a Chinese delegation also attended the queen's lying in state in Westminster Hall.

New research shared with The Guardian indicates that ancestors of King Charles III bought and exploited enslaved individuals on tobacco plantations in Virginia. The documents establish a direct link between the Windsor family tree and the trafficking of enslaved Africans. A researcher named Desirée Baptiste discovered the documents while investigating links between the Church of England and enslavers in Virginia for a play she was writing. The revelation follows the Guardian’s publication of a document earlier this month that linked the slave trader Edward Colston to the British monarchy. The Royal African Company (RAC) granted almost 180,000 enslaved individuals, and senior RAC officials, describing themselves as “your loving friends”, instructed the captain of a ship to deliver “negroes” to Edward Porteus, a tobacco plantation owner in Virginia, and two other men.

The instruction adds, "You are with your first opportunity of wind and weather that God shall send after receipt hereof to sett sail out of the River of Thames on the Shipp of Speedwell and make the best of your way to James Island on the River of Gambia … our said Agent to put aboard the Shipp Two Hundred Negroes and as many more as he shall get ready and the ship can conveniently carry … and then proceed … to Potomac River in Maryland, and deliver them to Mr Edward Porteus, Mr Christopher Robinson and Mr Richard Gardiner.”

Virginia is a significant state in the history of US slavery due to an infamous landing of enslaved African people at Jamestown in 1619. Laws in the state were developed to maintain slavery and suppress uprisings. An uprising by enslaved people in 1663 in Gloucester County, where Porteus was based, was mercilessly put down. These revelations come after the Guardian’s publication of a document earlier this month that connected the slave trader Edward Colston to the British monarchy.

Earlier, in response to the revelations regarding monarchy's ties to slavery, King Charles had shown willingness support research into the topic. As per The Guardian, a spokesperson for Buckingham Palace said, "“This is an issue that His Majesty takes profoundly seriously. As His Majesty told the Commonwealth heads of government reception in Rwanda last year: ‘I cannot describe the depths of my personal sorrow at the suffering of so many, as I continue to deepen my own understanding of slavery’s enduring impact.’"

Ancestors of King Charles III owned slave plantations: Report

Queen Elizabeth knew that Rupert Murdoch's newspapers had been spying on her family and their friends, and authorised her staff to "draw a line" under the issue, according to an email released on Thursday in a lawsuit by her grandson Prince Harry.

Harry is suing Murdoch's News Group Newspapers for hacking into mobile phones and other unlawful acts he says were committed against him on behalf of its tabloids, the Sun and the now-defunct News of the World, from the mid-1990s until 2016.

News Group, which has settled more than a thousand phone-hacking cases over the past decade, is trying this week to strike out Harry's claim and a similar case brought by British actor Hugh Grant, arguing they should have taken action sooner.

<div class="videoWrapper trancodeVideo"><iframe allowfullscreen="" autoplay="1" class="includeVideo" frameborder="0" height="350" src="https://www.wionews.com/videos/gravitas-plus-the-british-monarchy-and-its-many-tales-of-racism-corruption-and-insignificance-542076/embed" style="width:100%;max-width:560px;" width="560"></iframe></div>

Clive Goodman, the News of the World's then royal reporter, was jailed in 2007 for illegally intercepting royal household phone messages.

Harry, estranged from his father King Charles, says he did not bring a lawsuit earlier because of a "secret agreement" between Buckingham Palace and Murdoch's executives to protect the royal family from embarrassment. News Group denies any such agreement, while the palace has not commented.

A 2017 email from the palace, submitted to the court by Harry's legal team and released on Thursday, appears to show that royal staff tried to put the phone hacking claims to rest, with the backing of the then-queen, who died last year.

It was time to "draw a line" under the dispute, the director of royal communications, Sally Osman, wrote to News Corp (NWSA.O) Chief Executive Robert Thomson.

"The fact that we can have this conversation, with the queen's full authority and knowledge of the scale and effect of hacking and surveillance on her family, their staff, associates, friends and family, is important with a view to resolution in the near future," Osman wrote.

In another email in early 2018, Osman told Thomson and Rebekah Brooks, head of Murdoch's UK subsidiary, of "an increasing sense of frustration here at the lack of response or willingness to engage in finding a resolution".

Harry ultimately filed his lawsuit in 2019.

Harry has said NGN settled a phone hacking claim from his brother William "for a huge sum of money in 2020... without any of the public being told, and seemingly with some favourable deal in return for him going 'quietly' so to speak".

Buckingham Palace has not commented and William's office said it could not comment on ongoing legal proceedings. News Group has disputed the existence of a "secret agreement" but declined to comment on whether it settled with William.

The case is one of four Harry is currently pursuing against British publishers, following claims in his Netflix documentary and memoir "Spare" accusing tabloids of widespread unlawful activity and his family of colluding with them.

The preliminary hearing is expected to conclude on Thursday, with a trial due in January if the judge lets it go ahead. Harry, who now lives in California with his family, was not in court, but is following the proceedings by video link. Grant attended court in person on Thursday.

Palace email says Queen Elizabeth knew Murdoch papers spied on her family

King Charles has reportedly declined an offer from London's Heathrow Airport to rename Terminal 5 in his honor ahead of his coronation on May 6. According to The Times, the King has spoken with UK government officials to reject the offer. Although a government source claimed that the rejection was based on environmental concerns, a palace insider suggested that Charles simply lacked a personal connection to the airport. Regardless of the reason, the decision means that there will be no "heir travel" under Charles' name. The Post has reached out to representatives for both the royal family and Heathrow Airport for additional comment.

Instead of the original plan, the airport will now create a simple commemorative luggage tag as a tribute to the king's coronation. The Times reported Buckingham Palace stated that the king turned down the offer based on "government advice," although it is "believed" that the ministers were following the king's wishes. The palace also noted that obtaining the royal title for businesses and other operations can be quite challenging.

While the king's environmental concerns have been cited as a reason for his refusal, this may be a genuine concern. In recent decades, King Charles&nbsp;has been vocal about climate change and conservation.

Charles will officially be coronated on May 6. There will be two ceremonies, one at Westminster Abbey and the other a concert at Windsor Castle the following day. Katy Perry and Lionel Richie are confirmed to be performing in the concert. Although Charles became Britain's King immediately after his mother Queen Elizabeth II's death, on May 6, he will now be officially crowned king.

King Charles III's pomp-filled coronation on May 6 will feature many ancient traditions in a ceremony harking back to the 10th century.

But while custom and ritual will remain key, the new king has made no secret of his wish to modernise.

This is what we know about Charles' plans for a 21st-century coronation and how it compares to the last one, of his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, in 1953.

- Smaller guest list -

Around 2,000 people will be present in Westminster Abbey, compared with more than 8,000 in 1953 who had to squeeze onto specially built platforms.

The reduction echoes Charles's longstanding aim of "streamlining" the monarchy itself, reducing it to around seven key working members.

The length of the ceremony will also be slashed from nearly three hours to just over one hour.

- Fascinators or tiaras? -

At Elizabeth's coronation almost all royal women and female aristocrats wore tiaras.&nbsp;

The dress code for Charles's coronation has yet to be confirmed but there is speculation there might be a move to smart attire teamed with hats or fascinators for all but the most senior royal women.

- Dressed down lords -

A limited number of places for MPs and members of the upper house of parliament known as the House of Lords are being allocated by cross-party ballot.

In 1953, more than 800 MPs and 900 peers -- members of the Lords including dukes, marquesses, earls, viscounts and barons who had inherited a seat along with their title -- attended in their long crimson velvet cloaks.

The hereditary element to membership of the Lords was reformed in 1999 and this time members have been told not to wear their special coronation robes.

Instead they can opt for the ceremonial robes they usually wear for the state opening of parliament or standard business dress.

- Recycled crown -

Camilla will be crowned with a crown made for Queen Mary -- Charles's great-grandmother -- in 1911.

It will make her the first queen consort in almost three centuries to make modifications to an existing crown for the event rather than commission a new one.

- Vegan oil -

The oil used to anoint the monarch will be vegan.

Previous anointing oil included ambergris from whale intestines.

The oil to be used for Charles's ceremony will be animal free and contain olive oil scented with sesame, jasmine, cinnamon, neroli, benzoin and amber as well as orange blossom.

- Greek tribute -&nbsp;

Greek Orthodox chanting will feature for the first time in a coronation, in memory of Charles's father Prince Philip.&nbsp;

He was born in Corfu and was a member of the Greek royal family.&nbsp;

The Byzantine Chant Ensemble led by Alexander Lingas, a professor of Orthodox music, has been formed especially for the performance.

The Ascension Choir will also be the first gospel choir to sing at a coronation.

- Girl power -

For the first time girls will be among the scholarship pupils, known as King's scholars, from the exclusive Westminster School who will take part in the ceremony.&nbsp;

In 1953, the school in central London was a boys-only school.

A mixed group of pupils will acclaim the monarch with the Latin cry "Vivat Rex Carolus!" ("Long live King Charles!")

- All mod cons -&nbsp;

Elizabeth travelled both to and from her coronation in the elaborate but uncomfortable 260-year-old Gold State Coach.&nbsp;

Charles and Camilla will use it only for their return journey.&nbsp;

For their outward trip they have opted for the modern Diamond Jubilee State Coach which has shock absorbers, heating and air conditioning.

They will also take a far shorter, two-kilometre (1.3 mile) return journey than Elizabeth's over seven kilometre route which lasted two hours.

- Shoulders back -

Compared to the 29,000 members of the armed forces personnel who took part in 1953, Charles's coronation procession back to Buckingham Palace will be a slimmed-down affair.&nbsp;

Just under 4,000 personnel will accompany him and Queen Camilla including military bands.

Vegan oil and fascinators: King Charles III's 'modern' coronation

For the very first time non-Christian figures would be represented in the coronation of a British monarch. According to a report by the Times, this comes as King Charles III whose coronation is going to take place next month has stated his desire to be a defender of all faiths.

King Charles' coronation: Non-Christian figures to be represented for first time

Almost three decades since the-then prince Charles' proclamation that he is more of a "defender of&nbsp;faith" than "the faith," Britain's King as per a Times report is all set to incorporate other religions into his coronation ceremony.&nbsp;As per the report, "Muslim, Hindu, Sikh and Jewish peers will present the King with four key pieces of coronation regalia during the ceremony at Westminster Abbey."

This is the first involvement of non-Christian figures in the crowning of a British monarch. Four members of the House of Lords will be part of the main ceremony; members of the Muslim, Hindu, Sikh and Jewish communities, will represent their faiths.

As per the reports, while these clerics will most probably not be given the chance to speak or even read out blessings, they will form a "faith procession."

This move is also significant because it highlights the important role of the House of Lords in official royal events.&nbsp;

As per Times, the inclusion of representatives from different faiths in the coronation ceremony reflects the changing demographics of the United Kingdom, which has become increasingly diverse in recent years. It also acknowledges the important role that religion plays in the lives of many British citizens.

However, as per a Daily Mail report, Church leaders are resisting the role of other faith leaders in King Charles' coronation ceremony. The ceremony is traditionally an Anglican ceremony and is also a constitutional event. As per the publication, a compromise might be required. According to the Bill of Rights Act 1688, which was modified by the Accession Declaration Act of 1910, the Monarch, who serves as the Supreme Governor of the Church of England, must declare during his Coronation or at the first State Opening of Parliament that he is a loyal Protestant and will guarantee the Protestant succession. Furthermore, under the Coronation Oath Act of 1688, the monarch, in this case, the king is obligated to declare that he will uphold the established Anglican Protestant Church.

Heathrow security strikes to cause 'inevitable disruption' during King's coronation

Nicki Minaj has a few jokes about the ongoing tension between Britain's King Charles III and his second son Prince Harry. Minaj took to Twitter on Monday to tweet a few jokes about Charles' coronation ceremony which is scheduled to take place on May 6 in London. The tweets came after the rapper released a collaborative track with Ice Spice recently - titled Princess Diana. Britain is preparing for the grand coronation ceremony of King Charles III and Queen Consort Camilla.&nbsp;

On Monday, while promoting her song, Minaj tweeted, “I’ll be attending the coronation. Thank you. Stream Princess Diana&nbsp;until I land. Scones on dekk [sic]. Whole lotta gang s***.”

The King’s coronation guest list does include some prominent celebrities, including Absolutely Fabulous star Dame Joanna Lumley, who is reportedly a “close friend” of Charles.

US First Lady Jill Biden will also attend the coronation, but without her husband, President Joe Biden.

It was also recently confirmed that Prince Harry will attend the coronation, despite a speculated rift between him and the royal family. However, Harry's wife Meghan Markle and their children will remain in California as Archie’s fourth birthday falls on the same day as the coronation.

According to a report, Harry held “peace talks” with Charles before confirming he would attend the coronation.

Nicki Minaj jokes about King Charles' coronation ceremony, quips would sit next to Prince Harry

The world is quite fascinated with the British monarchy. Not just Britons, but people around the world are intrigued by the castles and jewels owned by kings and queens, and their net worth can be jaw-dropping. New reports on the British monarchy have shed light on how rich is King Charles III is, as his personal fortune is now public information.&nbsp;

The Sunday Times Rich List showed that King Charles is significantly wealthier than his mother, the late Queen Elizabeth II, as the monarch's fortune is around £600 million, which is a significant increase over the late Queen's estimated £370 million fortune from the previous year.&nbsp;

The Times list, which will be published next month and will include 350 names, showed that the wealth of King Charles will surpass that of Sir Elton John the musician and footballer-musician couple David and Victoria Beckham.&nbsp;

UK-based media outlets, citing one of the monarch's former aides, revealed how the 74-year-old rebuilt his finances after his multi-million-pound divorce from Princess Diana in the 1990s.&nbsp;

<h2>King Charles and his projects&nbsp;</h2>

The report also mentioned that King Charles raised the Duchy of Cornwall's annual profits by 42.6 per cent between 2011 and 2022. The total now stands at £25.4 million. As quoted by Express, the former advisor said that Charles was "tucking away some money" from the Duchy and the exact amount has never been revealed, although the sum has been described as "several tens of millions".&nbsp;

Reports also mentioned that the King also introduced his Duchy Originals line more than 30 years ago, releasing goods from his Highgrove House estate that were first offered through Harrods and Fortnum &amp; Mason, and eventually made available in Waitrose. Products from his line included biscuits, beer, herbal medicine and garden tools were later added.&nbsp;

King Charles also created a sustainable development in Dorset before starting a similar project in Cornwall. The Times report mentioned that during this time, the duchy increased its revenue by renting out commercial assets in Cornwall, Milton Keynes, and London.&nbsp;

King Charles is also the owner of the Crown Estate, which is an organisation with £15.6 billion in royal fortune that cannot be sold because it is not part of the Royal Family.&nbsp;

As quoted by the Mirror, Royal author Robert Hardman said: "A lot of people do get confused about the royal finances — wrongly thinking that [the royal family] personally own the Crown Estate and the duchies."&nbsp;

Hardman added: "In all honesty, their financial arrangements really aren't as complex as [those of] many royal families and rulers in other countries, which are often far more opaque. Our monarchy really isn’t as wealthy as many people would believe. I certainly don't think the King is a billionaire."&nbsp;

<h2>What did&nbsp;King Charles inherit?&nbsp;</h2>

Charles became king when his mother, Queen Elizabeth, died last September. The formal coronation ceremony will take place at Westminster Abbey on May 6. The moment he ascended the throne, he not only assumed the position for which he had been training his entire life, but also he received the inheritance of a priceless collection of real estate, jewels (some stolen, some controversial), artwork, heirlooms, and money.&nbsp;

Blue-chip stock market shares and bonds made up a large portion of the late Queen's extensive financial portfolio, which is estimated to be worth about £100 million. Prince Philip's will was not made public, which makes&nbsp;it unclear exactly how much was handed to Charles by the prince.&nbsp;

Almost 30 other senior royals' sealed wills who passed away since 1910 were kept in a safe in London with Queen Elizabeth's.&nbsp;King Charles also likely inherited the Queen Mother's £70 million fortune, which passed to the Queen when the Queen Mother passed away.&nbsp;

<h2>'The Firm'&nbsp;</h2>

As we learn about King Charles's personal wealth, it is also important to know about 'The Firm' (also known as "Monarchy PLC"), which exists independently from King Charles. The Royal Firm is not King Charles's personal money and a report by Forbes mentioned that the firm holds around $28 billion in assets (the report was published at the time of the Queen's death).&nbsp;

The firm includes the Crown Estate, Buckingham Palace, Kensington Palace, the Duchy of Cornwall, the Duchy of Lancaster, and the Crown Estate of Scotland. King Charles uses these resources to carry out his duties as king, but he is not allowed to sell them because they belong to the Crown and will be given to Prince William when he succeeds him as king, and so on. But notably, The Sovereign Grant is a mechanism whereby the royals receive a personal percentage of income from the firm's assets.&nbsp;

As we are talking about millions worth of wealth, we must mention the inheritance taxes, and in the case of King Charles, he doesn't have to pay any—a different matter of discussion.&nbsp;

Explained I From real estate to jewels: The massive fortune of King Charles III

The British have spoken! They don't want to fund the upcoming coronation of King Charles III. Over half of the respondents, 51 per cent to be precise, in a YouGov poll said they do not believe the government should pay for the event. 32 per cent said the government indeed should pay, while around 18 per cent said they do not know. This comes out amid a struggling British economy with an inflation rate touching 10 per cent. There have been strikes by workers across the country and various sectors over low pay and poor conditions. We do not yet know how much the event will cost, though it will likely be a pretty penny.&nbsp;

The British have spoken! They don't want to fund the upcoming coronation of King Charles III. Over half of the respondents, 51 per cent to be precise, in a YouGov poll said they do not believe the government should pay for the event. 32 per cent said the government indeed should pay, while around 18 per cent said they do not know. This comes out amid a struggling British economy with an inflation rate touching 10 per cent. There have been strikes by workers across the country and various sectors over low pay and poor conditions. We do not yet know how much the event will cost, though it will likely be a pretty penny. There will be two ceremonies, one at Westminster Abbey and the other a concert at Windsor Castle the following day. Katy Perry and Lionel Richie are confirmed to be performing in the concert. This news has stirred up controversy and speculation as the couple has had a strained relationship with the royal family since their decision to step back from their royal duties in January 2020. Buckingham Palace revealed the news on Wednesday through a statement. The statement read (quoted by People), "Buckingham Palace is pleased to confirm that The Duke of Sussex will attend the Coronation Service at Westminster Abbey on 6th May. Take That, Lionel Richie, Katy Perry and Andrea Bocelli will be among those performing at a concert to mark King Charles III's coronation, the BBC said on Friday.

A televised Coronation Concert is being held in the grounds of Windsor Castle, west of London, on May 7 -- the day after Charles is officially crowned king.

BBC chief content officer Charlotte Moore said the coronation was a "once-in-a-generation occasion" and called the concert line-up "world class".

But recent reports have said that a number of big-name stars have turned down the gig, including Adele, Elton John, Harry Styles and the Spice Girls.

They are said to have declined because of scheduling clashes or touring commitments.

But the Mail on Sunday said singer Kylie Minogue had refused given increased republican sentiment in her native Australia, where Charles is also king.

Some 20,000 members of the public and invited guests are set to attend in person, with the live event also broadcast on radio and online.

Other confirmed performers in the lineup include opera star Bryn Terfel, the singer-songwriter Freya Ridings and composer-producer Alexis Ffrench.

Perry -- who performed for US President Joe Biden's inauguration in 2021 -- as well as Take That and Richie all have links to Charles's charitable foundations.

Richie, who at 73 is just a year younger than the king, said the concert would be an "honour and a celebration".

Bocelli has previously performed for Charles's mother, Queen Elizabeth II, who died in September last year aged 96.

He was among a star-studded lineup headlined by Diana Ross for the late monarch's Platinum Jubilee concert marking her 70th year on the throne last June.

Further names for the Coronation Concert will be announced in due course, the BBC said.

- Apathy -

Despite the coronation being the first since 1953 and an event most Britons alive have never witnessed, public interest currently appears lacking.

Coronation coins have been minted, special chinaware produced and even a crown emoji made to mark the occasion at Westminster Abbey.&nbsp;

But a YouGov poll of more than 3,000 people published Friday indicated that just over a third (35 percent) "do not care very much" about the event.

Just under a third (29 percent) said they "do not care at all", with apathy greatest among younger age groups.

About a quarter (24 percent) of all respondents said they cared "a fair amount" and only about one in 10 people (nine percent) said they cared "a great deal".

Nonetheless, 46 percent of Britons said they would likely watch or take part in celebrations, including street parties and community lunches on May 8, which has been declared a public holiday.

Preparations were ongoing for the solemn religious ceremony, whose roots date back more than a millennium, and the guest list finalised.

Charles's younger son Prince Harry is set to attend, despite his public criticisms of the royal family since moving to the United States in early 2020.

The former British army captain's actress wife, Meghan, however, will remain in California with their two young children.

UK invites international community, including India, to King Charles III and Camilla's coronation

For hundreds of years, the British royal family's flaunting of the Kohinoor diamond has been a bone of contention between the UK and India. The Kohinoor, which is now part of the crown of Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother, is displayed at the Tower Of London in a ticketed arena. While the Kohinoor remains a prized possession of the British royal family, it has become an emblem of Britain’s tortured relationship with its imperial history.

A report in The Guardian details the number of jewels that the royal family proudly flaunts as their own- have imperial origins- highlighting the British rule in India. Many of the jewels were taken as trophies of conquest by the British before it was handed over to Queen Victoria including the Kohinoor which belong to Maharaja Ranjit Singh of Punjab.

According to the Guardian report, Queen Mary, grandmother of &nbsp;Elizabeth II had commissioned to investigate the imperial origins of her jewels. The 46-page file in the archives of the India Office, the government department that was responsible for Britain’s rule over the Indian subcontinent has detailed how priceless pieces were extracted from India. Most of these items are now owned by the monarch as property of the British crown. &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

Kohinoor is not the only Indian jewel that is now a part of the royal family jewels. There is a long gold girdle inlaid with 19 large emeralds once used by Indian Maharaja Ranjit Singh to decorate his horses. It is now a part of King Charles's personal collection.&nbsp;

A journal records a tour in 1837 of the Punjab area in north India by the society diarist Fanny Eden and her brother George, the governor-general of the British Raj at the time. They visited Ranjit Singh, the maharajah in Lahore, who had signed a “treaty of friendship” with the British six years earlier.

The journal detailed that while half-blind Singh wore few pieces of jewellery, his entourage was laden with precious jewels. He had so much that he put his finest jewellery on his horses- on their harnesses.&nbsp;

A few years after Ranjit Singh's demise, his youngest son and heir, Duleep, was forced to sign over Punjab to the conquering forces of the British East India Company. As part of the conquest, the company not only plundered the horses' emeralds but also the coveted Kohinoor diamond.

A few weeks ago, Buckingham Palace announced that Camilla, the Queen Consort would not be flaunting the Kohinoor at Charles' coronation as it would elicit “painful memories of the colonial past."&nbsp;

Another prominent Indian piece that now is part of the royal's personal collection is a pearl necklace consisting of 224 large pearls. The late Queen Elizabeth II has been pictured wearing the necklace in public on two occasions.
While the original owner of the necklace is not documented, it is speculated by the experts that it belongs to Maharaj Rajit Singh.

The family also now possesses a short necklace of four very large spinel rubies, the largest of which is a 325.5-carat spinel which is known as Timur ruby.&nbsp;

Its famous name is erroneous: research by the academic Susan Stronge in 1996 concluded it was probably never owned by Timur.&nbsp;

Further research revealed that it passed hands between the kings of Persia and Mughal emperors until Queen Victoria was given it from India.

Indian politician Shashi Tharoor told The Guardian, &nbsp;“We have finally entered an era where colonial loot and pillage is being recognised for what it really was, rather than being dressed up as the incidental spoils of some noble ‘civilising mission’.

“As we are seeing increasingly, the return of stolen property is always a good thing. Generations to come will wonder why it took civilised nations so long to do the right thing.”

Kohinoor to emerald studded horse harness: The troubled colonial history of British royal jewels

Buckingham Palace said on Thursday that King Charles has given his approval to research that will look into the British monarchy's connections to slavery. This comes following a revelation made in an archival document that the British monarchy had linkages to transatlantic slavery.

According to a report cited by Guardian, King William III received 1,000 pounds worth of shares in the Royal African Company (RAC) in 1689. The RAC was responsible for transporting thousands of slaves from Africa to the Americas.&nbsp;&nbsp;

"This is an issue that His Majesty takes profoundly seriously," Buckingham Palace said in a statement.

There are many reports which claim that the British were one of the major players in the transatlantic slave trade, which involved the forced transportation of millions of Africans from their homes to the Americas and the Caribbean to work on plantations and in other industries.

The freshly unearthed paper was signed by Edward Colston, a prominent figure in the slave trade whose history gained notoriety after protestors in Bristol, southwest England, toppled a statue honouring him. They&nbsp;tossed the statue&nbsp;into the harbour during the 2020 Black Lives Matter demonstrations.

The research appears to be a continuous effort&nbsp;to acknowledge the past and resolve its lingering ramifications.&nbsp;

In the Caribbean, where Charles continues to be the head of state of many nations, notably Jamaica and the Bahamas, the calls for potential reparations from the monarchy are growing.

As per reports, the British were involved in the slave trade until slavery was finally abolished throughout the British Empire.

By granting access to the Royal Collection and the Royal Archives, Buckingham Palace announced that the royal family will support an independent study initiative looking into possible connections between the monarchy and slavery throughout the late 17th and early 18th centuries.

When Prince William, Charles's eldest son and current heir, travelled to the Caribbean in March of last year as part of a tour, there were demonstrations and demands for an apology for slavery.

Buckingham Palace said on Thursday that King Charles has given his approval to research that will look into the British monarchy's connections to slavery. This comes following a revelation made in an archival document that the British monarchy had linkages to transatlantic slavery. According to a report cited by Guardian, King William III received 1,000 pounds worth of shares in the Royal African Company (RAC) in 1689. The RAC was responsible for transporting thousands of slaves from Africa to the Americas. "This is an issue that His Majesty takes profoundly seriously," Buckingham Palace said in a statement. The freshly unearthed paper was signed by Edward Colston, a prominent figure in the slave trade whose history gained notoriety after protestors in Bristol, southwest England, toppled a statue honouring him. They tossed the statue into the harbour during the 2020 Black Lives Matter demonstrations. The research appears to be a continuous effort to acknowledge the past and resolve its lingering ramifications. In the Caribbean, where Charles continues to be the head of state of many nations, notably Jamaica and the Bahamas, the calls for potential reparations from the monarchy are growing. As per reports, the British were involved in the slave trade until slavery was finally abolished throughout the British Empire. When Prince William, Charles's eldest son and current heir, travelled to the Caribbean in March of last year as part of a tour, there were demonstrations and demands for an apology for slavery. King Charles backs research to investigate links between royal family and slavery

In a lead-up to his coronation, King Charles III has ordered a probe into the royal family's links with slave trade. What is the point of this probe? Has King Charles put his fist in a hornet's nest? Molly Gambhir tells you.

Gravitas: How the royals profited from slavery

British royals King Charles and the late Queen Elizabeth II have generated an income of more than £1 billion ($1.25 billion) from two property and land estates that have remained at the centre of a centuries-old debate over whether the public should instead get the profits churned by these properties, revealed an investigation by the Guardian.

The report specified the full scale of income that the royals are extracting from the duchies of Lancaster and Cornwall, which have been running giant portfolios of property and land across England.

The duchies have been operating as real estate empires that professionally manage swathes of hotels, offices, farmland, shops, medieval castles and some prime luxury real estate in London.

The duchies also have their investment portfolios, however, they pay no capital gains tax or corporation tax. Duchy accounts, which are held in state and parliamentary archives, reveal how the queen along with her first-born son, who was given the title of the Duke of Cornwall, enjoyed a massive boost in their revenues from the duchies in her seven-decade-long reign.

The royal's duchy income, last year, totalled £41.8 million ($52.17 million). After adjusting the inflation, the total revenue earned by the royal mother-son duo was equivalent to more than £1.2 billion ($1.50 billion) from the two estates.

The profits earned from the Duchy of Lancaster, which includes rural land spread over 18,481 hectares primarily in the Midlands and the north of England, passes automatically to whoever is crowned next. The value of the estate today stands at £652 million ($813.78 million).

The Duchy of Cornwall, which includes 52,450 hectares spread mostly in England's southwest, is worth more than £1 billion ($1.25 billion).

The estate has not updated its policy as per the legislation passed in 2013 to include gender equality in the royal succession. Hence, the estate's profits automatically go into the coffers of the male heir to the royal throne.

When King Charles, came to the throne last year, the heir to the throne – Prince William – automatically became the owner of the Duchy of Cornwall on paper, turning into a billionaire and one of England's largest landowners. He is likely to get an annual payment of around £20 million ($24.96 million).&nbsp;

British royals earned more than £1bn from controversial estates: Report

It’s nearly time for Britain to get its new King, officially! The Buckingham Palace on Tuesday shared with the press, a colourful invitation to the coronation ceremony which will be issued to 2000 guests from around the world. The coronation ceremony for King Charles is on May 6.&nbsp;

The invitation card to the coronation ceremony is a beautiful white card with flowers and symbols that refer to the royal family bordering the card from all four sides. The card is designed by Andrew Jamieson, a heraldic artist and manuscript illuminator. It’s a hand painted water colour card with gouache illustrations that will be printed and distributed on recycled paper. This is in tandem with King Charles’ lifelong effort to lead a sustainable life.&nbsp;

<img alt="Charles" data-entity-type="file" data-entity-uuid="83c88cbe-366b-4938-9ca4-137ec8f7cce1" src="//cdn.wionews.com/sites/default/files/inline-images/HORIZONS%20%2837%29_0.jpg" />

The letter reads: "The Coronation of Their Majesties King Charles III and Queen Camilla. By command of the King the Earl Marshal is directed to invite [name] to be present at the Abbey Church of Westminster on the 6th day of May 2023."

When you take a close look at the invitation to the coronation ceremony, you can spot two birds perched on the letter C – Charles and Camilla's coats of arms. Also, the invitation card reveals that the Queen Consort has got a status update as she becomes the highest in command after King Charles. Her crest has been updated to reflect that she’s a Royal Lady of the Order of the Garter.

The flowers are also not abstract. The floral border is meant to reflect a British wildflower meadow with lily of the valley, cornflowers, wild strawberries, dog roses and bluebells, plus a sprig of rosemary for remembrance. The flowers are grouped in bunches of three to reflect that Charles is the third King of his name. Flowers also have butterflies, bees, a lion, a unicorn and a boar from the royal couple's coats of arms.

The flowers flow into an illustration of the Green Man — "an ancient figure from British folklore, symbolic of spring and rebirth, to celebrate the new reign," the palace said.

Meanwhile, there is no update on whether King Charles’ younger son, Prince Harry and his wife Meghan Markle will make it to the event. The young couple have been in a public spat with the royal family after they called the “institution” racist and unfair towards them. Charles’ elder son, heir to the throne, Prince William and wife Kate Middleton will take the lead at the event.&nbsp;

King Charles' coronation ceremony invitation card has flowers, birds and more: What it means

According to reports, United States President Joe Biden has declined the invitation for attending King Charles III’s coronation ceremony. &nbsp;US president Biden is "not expected" to visit the UK for attending the coronation, reported The Telegraph quoting sources who claimed that a delegation will be sent to the ceremony in his place.&nbsp;

The reports suggested that US First Lady Jill Biden will probably attend the ceremony without her husband.&nbsp;

British ambassador to the US and Buckingham Palace Karen Pierce held “cordial and diplomatic” talks with the White House regarding the coronation, claimed the report but Biden's aides informed the Palace that the president had prior commitments.&nbsp;

However, the report claimed that there “may still be some efforts underway to see if Biden can be persuaded to come to the Coronation”, while another stated that his plan was “not locked and loaded”.

Joe Biden visited the UK, along with his wife in September, to join world leaders in paying their respects to the late Queen Elizabeth II at Westminster Abbey.&nbsp;

Celebrities who are likely to attend the coronation ceremony include David Beckham and his wife Victoria Beckham, who were also present at the funeral of the Queen, musician Gregory Charles, former Grey’s Anatomy star Sandra Oh and Olympic gold medallist swimmer Mark Tewksbury. &nbsp;

The confusion over the attendance of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle at the coronation ceremony still looms. However, the couple had received the invitation. &nbsp;

The president is likely to visit Northern Ireland in April to attend an event celebrating the 25th anniversary of the Good Friday Agreement and is believed to be preparing to run for the 2024 presidential elections.&nbsp;

Biden's aide, reacting on his absence in the ceremony, said that his relationship with the King was “strong”, and both Washington and London have tried to play down anything suggesting that their “special relationship” is threatened.&nbsp;

Legendary spy James Bond faces a race against time to save King Charles III's upcoming coronation in a new story to be released ahead of the May 6 ceremony, it was revealed on Friday.&nbsp;

Author, actor and comedian Charlie Higson has been commissioned to write the book, in which Bond has to thwart plans to disrupt the coronation ceremony, according to Ian Fleming Publications.

Higson, 64, has already written five books in the Young Bond&nbsp;series, which follows the future secret agent during his school days.

"On His Majesty's Secret Service" is due for publication on May 4, and comes 60 years after the publication of Bond creator Ian Fleming's tenth novel, "On Her Majesty's Secret Service".

"When Ian Fleming Publications came to me with the idea of writing an adult Bond story a little more than a month ago I was thrilled -- until I realised it had to be ready for the coronation in May," said Higson.

"Getting it written and turned around in such a short space of time was going to be as tense and heart-pounding as any Bond mission. Although, of course, nobody would actually be shooting at me."

"Fleming famously wrote fast, and I channelled that energy. And now it's so exciting for me to finally enter the world of grown-up Bond."

Higson promised fans the usual cocktail of "sex, violence, cars, a colourful villain with a nasty henchman, and of course, Bond himself."

Royalties from the book will go towards supporting the National Literacy Trust, which provides disadvantaged children with literacy skills.

"The coronation of King Charles III is a momentous occasion for the country," said Corinne Turner, managing director of Ian Fleming Publications.

"We asked ourselves how we at Ian Fleming Publications could celebrate it, and the answer seemed obvious. Ian Fleming's On Her Majesty's Secret Service was first published on April 1 1963. What better way, 60 years on, to mark this new chapter in history than with a brand new story: On His Majesty's Secret Service?"
