<p>A Kerala youth who was travelling 3,511 kilometres on skateboards from Kanyakumari to Kashmir perished tragically in a hit-and-run accident. 31-year-old Anas Hajas had undertaken the trip to raise awareness about skateboarding and had planned further trips to Bhutan, Nepal, and Cambodia after completing this leg of the journey. He was on his way from Pinjore in Panchkula to Nalagarh in Himachal Pradesh when the accident took place.<br />

Indian Express quoted Investigation officer Ram Karan of Pinjore police station as saying “He was on his skateboard when a truck hit him from the back and fled the spot. Some locals, however, noted the vehicle’s registration number and informed the police. Hajas was taken to the neighbouring Kalka Government Hospital where doctors declared him brought dead.”</p>

He had also borrowed money to send his son Nizamudheen to&nbsp;Qatar.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Left with no option, he had decided to sell his 2,000-square feet house. On Monday, just two hours before taking the token advance for the sale of his house, he came to know that he had won the jackpot prize of Rs 10 million. The results were declared on Sunday.</p>

<p>After winning the jackpot, Bava, as expected, decided not to sell the house. "I won the lottery. So, there is no need to sell the house. When we get the prize, all our issues will be sorted out," Bava told ZeeNews.</p>

<p>He had bought the winning ticket from Amma Lottery Agency in Hosangadi. According to reports, Mohammed got around Rs 6.3 million after the deduction of taxes, which is more than the money he owed.</p>

<p>"I was not a regular buyer of lottery tickets. I know that lottery agent personally, so when he used to pass my house, he used to give me some tickets. I bought this particular ticket under a lot of stress because I didn’t know what to do,"&nbsp;Bava said.&nbsp;</p>

<p>When inquired about what would he do with the money after repaying the loan, Bava said he would spend the rest of the amount on the poor and needy.</p>

Indian man wins Rs10 million lottery hours before selling house to pay off debt

<p>A lustrous moustache is often seen as a symbol of pride and high social standing by Indian men. They take great care in grooming their facial hair. But it is the opposite for women. They take great pains and spend a lot of money to have it removed, as it is perceived as undesirable for the female lot to have a moustache. But for the 35-year-old Indian woman from Kerala, her moustache is the most attractive part about her.</p>

<p>"I love my moustache," Shyja says declares in her WhatsApp status section, below a photo of herself.</p>

<p>As expected, there are people who troll Shyja for sporting facial hair. But there are others who admire her brave choice. Despite all the attention she has been garnering over the past few years, Shyja remains unfazed.</p>

<p>“People make fun of me saying, 'it's men who have moustaches, why would a woman have one?'" Shyja, who uses only one name, told the&nbsp;BBC. "But isn't that about what I like - what to keep and what not to?"</p>

<p>Shyja, who lives in the Kannur district, had wisps of facial hair above her lip for years. While she would get her eyebrows threaded regularly, the 35-year-old never paid attention to the small faint of hair hanging by her upper lip.</p>

<p>But it all changed around five years ago when that small faint of facial hair began to thicken into a visible moustache.</p>

<p>"I can't imagine living without it now. When the Covid pandemic started, I disliked wearing a mask all the time because it covered my face," she was quoted as saying.</p>

<p>There were many who asked her to get rid of her moustache but Shyja “never felt that I'm not beautiful because I have this or that it's something I shouldn't have."</p>

<p>The key reason for her confidence is the support from Shyja's family and friends. Her daughter is the biggest admirer of it and tells her mother that it looks good on her.</p>

<p>A part of her attitude also comes from having endured health problems for years. The Kerala woman has had six surgeries over a decade. One to remove a lump in her breast, another to remove cysts in her ovary and the last surgery was a hysterectomy five years ago.</p>

<p>"Each time I came out of surgery, I would hope that I never had to go back into an operation theatre again," she said.</p>

While she would get her eyebrows threaded regularly, the 35-year-old never paid attention to the small faint of hair hanging by her upper lip. But it all changed around five years ago when that small faint of facial hair began to thicken into a visible moustache. "I can't imagine living without it now. When the Covid pandemic started, I disliked wearing a mask all the time because it covered my face," she was quoted as saying. The organisation stated last month that the outbreak did not yet warrant the designation but added that it will examine matters including the potential for monkeypox to infect more vulnerable groups, such as children, and whether the virus is causing more severe sickness.</p>

<p data-changed="true" data-from-init="true" data-paragraphid="5">Forced to return to India after the COVID-19 pandemic broke out, the medical students have since been unable to return to their host country and have continued their physical training at government and private hospitals in the state.</p>

<p data-changed="true" data-from-init="true" data-paragraphid="6">Stuck in their home country due to the non-availability of visas from the Chinese authorities, the Indian students have resorted to completing their courses with the help of online classes.</p>

<p data-changed="true" data-from-init="true" data-paragraphid="7">"We were forced to come back from China in January 2020. It`s been two years since we have been attending online classes. We don`t have any recognition of whether the Indian government will accept us with these online classes. Most of us are doing are practicals at various government and private hospitals in Kerala, but is not recognised," Murshid Aleen, a fourth-year medical student at Yangzhou University told ANI.</p>

<p data-changed="true" data-from-init="true" data-paragraphid="8">Worried about repaying their loans and completing their education, the student said they have communicated their problems to the central government through an online portal-Centralised Public Grievance Redress and Monitoring System (CPGRAMS).</p>

<p data-changed="true" data-from-init="true" data-paragraphid="9">"We are helpless right now. We need a certificate from the government that we are going to the hospitals for a certain period and we are getting observation with certain department," Aleen said.</p>

<p data-changed="true" data-from-init="true" data-paragraphid="10">He further highlighted that China is presently facing another wave of COVID-19 and said that the situation there is becoming "more critical."Vice president of FMGPA, Subair MC said that students want authorisation from the Kerala government and Indian government to get their certificates to deem their education as "valid."</p>

<p>Bringing to an end to a harrowing 43-hour-long wait, Indian Army teams from Wellington and Bengaluru managed to reach the trekker at the crevice&nbsp;by the steep hillside&nbsp;on Wednesday at around 9:30am.</p>

<p>After securing him with ropes and harness, the Army teams carried him to safety and provided first aid. Babu was visibly exhausted, after having starved for 43 hours, braving the day and night weather.</p>

<p aria-hidden="true">Babu, had been stuck at a narrow crevice at the Koormbachi hillock in Palakkad, Kerala, after he slipped and fell during a group trekking expedition he undertook on Monday.</p>

<p aria-hidden="true">Unable to rescue him, his fellow trekkers returned to the nearby town and alerted authorities. Teams from Kerala Police, Fire brigade, NDRF and an Indian Coast Guard helicopter had taken efforts to attempt a rescue on Tuesday. However, they couldn't accomplish the task&nbsp;as planned.</p>

<p>In a bid to improve the vaccination rate, the chief minister (CM) of India’s south Kerala state announced that those who are not following COVID-19 prevention measures, like vaccination, will not be provided free treatment.</p>

<p>CM Pinarayi Vijayan also said that teachers and staff of educational institutions who have not taken both doses of the vaccine due to any illness or allergies, must produce a government doctor's certificate or they should get vaccinated before taking classes.</p>

<p>If they do not get vaccinated, they will have to get a negative RT-PCR test every week at their own cost, he said and added that these directions were being issued to ensure safety of the students going back to school and colleges.</p>

<p>He further said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has also issued guidelines to prevent and control the new variant, however, no cases of the new strain have been reported in Karnataka.</p>

<p>Speaking about the spike in Covid cases reported in student hostels in Dharwad, Mysuru and Bengaluru districts, Bommai said that these hostels and colleges had been declared as containment zones and students along with doctors and nurses were being subjected to the Covid test.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"We have requested the Union Government to ban the arrival of passengers from the three countries which have reported the new strain," Bommai added.</p>

<p>Replying to a question about the proposal on booster dose of COVID-19 vaccination for frontline workers, the Chief Minister said, "the state government had already written to the Centre seeking permission for administering the booster dose of COVID-19 vaccine."</p>

<p>"The state government had made double dose of vaccination compulsory for those working in government offices, malls, cinema halls and other public places. Testing has been intensified in border districts, students who have arrived in the last 16 days from Kerala would be tested again seven days after they get a negative report," Bommai added.</p>

<p>Meanwhile, the state Chief Minister said that a suitable decision would be taken on guidelines for New Year celebrations in the next few days depending on the situation.</p>

<p>"Instructions had been issued to follow covid guidelines in the campaign meetings of Legislative Council election. The state has 80 lakh doses of the vaccine and about 91 per cent of the eligible population has been covered for the first dose, a target of 70 per cent for the second dose by December end has been set," he added.</p>

<p>An elderly woman could be seen running from one person to another screaming through the rain swept roads in this high range hamlet, located at the foothills of Western Ghats mountain ranges, on Sunday morning.</p>

<p>"I have lost everything...Everything in my life...Where should I go?&nbsp;&nbsp;Who will give me a shelter?" the woman, clad in a tattered saree, asked aloud crying and running here and there.</p>

<p>The unexpected torrential rain, which pounded the village on Saturday, washed away every penny of her life time earnings and made her homeless all of a sudden.</p>

<p>"I begged our Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan sir to give me two cents of land to construct a 'koora' (hut). I have nowhere to go. My daughters' houses are also submerged. Now I am going to the church to see whether I will get a place there," she told the journalists gathered at the place.</p>

<p>It was the story of many hapless families in Koottickal, located in Kottayam district of Kerala which suffered severe destruction and human casualty due to a series of landslips triggered by heavy rains yesterday.</p>

<p>When the extreme rains showed a slight dip this morning, a large number of people in this village could be seen as displaced and became the inmates of rehabilitation campus.</p>

<p>Many elderly villagers said it was for the first time in their decades-old life that they were seeing and experiencing such severe rainfall.</p>

<p>A local shop owner here pointed to his new car, which can be seen as destroyed and partially hanging with its back wheels stuck on a broken wall in his house compound.</p>

<p>"It was my new car parked in front of the house. I was not at home when the flood water suddenly gushed inside the house compound Saturday afternoon. My wife and children some how managed to run to the neighbour's house," the middle aged man said.</p>

<p>He turned a bit emotional showing the 'mundu' (dhoti) which he was wearing, saying that it was borrowed from the neighbour.</p>

<p>Only life was saved and everything else was lost, he said adding that not even in the 2018 floods had he faced such a terrible situation.</p>

<p>The situation was not different in Kokkayar, a hilly hamlet in Idukki district as well, which also witnessed a series of landslips and human casualty on Saturday in incessant rains.</p>

<p>A shocked Rajamma, a woman villager, was yet to believe that a four-member family including children, who was seen engaged in some construction activities near her home on the foothills of hill, swept away by flood waters in front of her eyes.</p>

<p>The elderly woman said she advised the family to move away from the place when water was seen coming down from the hill tops in a small scale.</p>

<p>"But, they continued their work. Suddenly a portion of the hill, where they were standing, caved in.&nbsp;Huge boulders started rolling down accompanied by a massive flood of water.&nbsp;I do not remember anything else," the teary-eyed woman said.</p>

<p>George, a middle-aged man engaged in rescue operations, said it was everything fine and calm in the village till 11 PM on Saturday.</p>

<p>"But, the situation worsened after that. Around 10 big bridges and the same number of wooden bridges were washed away and the village became isolated soon," he added.</p>

<p>The Army, NDRF, police and the Fire Force along with the locals began rescue operations on Sunday morning at Koottickal and Kokkayar panchayats where over a dozen people are listed to be missing due to numerous landslides accompanied by heavy downpour since Saturday.</p>

<p>Officials said rescue operators on Sunday morning recovered four more bodies from Koottickal panchayat taking the toll to eight.</p>
