The 10.5-mile-wide (17 kilometres) Comet 12P/Pons-Brooks, which is also known as the "Mother of Dragons comet", will be at its closest point to the sun, called perihelion. It will be at a distance of about 144 million miles (232 million km) from our star.

This position will make the comet significantly brighter and easier to see with the naked eye in the western sky after sunset.

For stargazers, it will be best to see the comet on April 21 and a few nights before and after when it will be at its brightest.

The people trying to see the comet in northern latitudes may find it difficult since it will be positioned in the glow of sunset.

"In spite of the fact that the comet should be brightest because it is nearest to the sun, it is quite distant from us," said Frank Maloney, who is an associate professor of astronomy and astrophysics at Villanova University in Pennsylvania, while speaking to Live Science.

Erupting volcanoes are fascinating, and the countless volcano models children make in schools are a testament to that. But, if volcanoes on the Earth are so intriguing, how much more amazing would it be to be able to watch volcanoes erupting somewhere out in space?

NASA's Webb Telescope discovered margarita and vinegar-like chemicals on a protostar. They shared this finding on Instagram. These substances were found in two young stars without planets. "There are two servings in this discovery. This image shows the region near protostar IRAS 23385. Protostar IRAS 2A may be similar to the early stages of our own solar system. Chemicals identified around this protostar may also have been in the first stages of development of our solar system and later delivered to the primitive Earth," the post read. View this post on Instagram A post shared by NASA (@nasa) × "Image of a molecular cloud region. The orange cloud is dense and bright near the top and grows darker and wispier toward the bottom. One bright star with short diffraction spikes and several dimmer stars are visible," NASA said. This post, shared on April 14, has gathered over 300,000 likes and many comments. People shared their reactions in the comments section. A person wrote, "Then we can consider another exoplanet on the way? Or maybe planets that would eventually lead to develop life due to the presence of these chemicals?" A second shared, "That looks like a snowflake only with gas." "Gobsmacked again by the universe!" posted a third. A fourth added, "What are those shapes? I've never seen shapes like that in space photos." "Am I the only one that thinks the brightest dot (the star probably) looks like a pretty snowflake," said another. Also watch | Gravitas: Life beyond Earth?
Jupiter, the solar system's largest planet, hasn't received as much attention from astronomers as Mars. The reason is clear: Mars is viewed as the prime candidate for human colonisation. While Jupiter isn't on that list, though its moon Europa might be in the future.

However, because Jupiter is crucial for the entire solar system, there are plans, like the Europa Clipper mission, to study it more extensively.

This will help answer questions about its role and composition. It's essential to remember that Jupiter is often seen as a failed star. If it had gathered more material, it might have become one. Also, Jupiter has numerous moons, including Europa, which are gaining importance.

However, NASA has now announced its plans for Jupiter. The Europa Clipper mission, which began in 2013 and was officially confirmed in 2019, will soon head towards the planet.

NASA's Europa Clipper mission to send humanity's message to one of Jupiter's largest moons

The icy moon of planet Jupiter, Europa, has been producing 1,000 tonnes of oxygen every 24 hours which is sufficient to keep one million humans breathing, as per the data collected by the Juno spacecraft, which is orbiting the planet.

The new findings, however, have proven that in reality Europa produces less amount of oxygen than was previously believed.

The new study was published in Nature Astronomy with the use of data collected by Juno's Jovian Auroral Distributions Experiment (JADE) instrument which measures the amount of hydrogen that has out gassed the surface of the icy moon.

According to the study, every second 12kg of oxygen is being produced at Europa. It was previously estimated to be as much as 1,000kg every second.

Is Europa's subsurface ocean a habitable place?

However, according to some planetary scientists, some of the oxygen produced on Jupiter's moon is entering Europa's subsurface ocean and the icy moon has been one of the most suitable places to hunt for habitable conditions beyond Earth in the Solar System.

“Europa is like an ice ball slowly losing its water in a flowing stream. Except, in this case, the stream is a fluid of ionised particles swept around Jupiter by its extraordinary magnetic field. When these ionized particles impact Europa, they break up the water-ice molecule by molecule on the surface to produce hydrogen and oxygen. In a way, the entire ice shell is being continuously eroded by waves of charged particles washing up upon it,” said Jamey Szalay from Princeton University, while speaking to NASA.

Juno spacecraft measured the hydrogen while flying overhead on September 29, 2022. It was 354 kilometres above Europa as JADE started recording data.

The spacecraft took measurements of hydrogen and oxygen ions which had been created by bombarding charged particles and then “picked up” by the magnetic field of Jupiter.

“Our ability to fly close to the Galilean satellites during our extended mission allowed us to start tackling a breadth of science, including some unique opportunities to contribute to the investigation of Europa’s habitability. The icy moon of planet Jupiter, Europa, has been producing 1,000 tonnes of oxygen every 24 hours which is sufficient to keep one million humans breathing, as per the data collected by the Juno spacecraft, which is orbiting the planet.

Also Read: Earth is round, but Jupiter was once most likely flat: Scientists According to the study, every second 12kg of oxygen is being produced at Europa. Watch: Gravitas: Russia's new secret weapon for space war The spacecraft took measurements of hydrogen and oxygen ions which had been created by bombarding charged particles and then “picked up” by the magnetic field of Jupiter. “Our ability to fly close to the Galilean satellites during our extended mission allowed us to start tackling a breadth of science, including some unique opportunities to contribute to the investigation of Europa’s habitability. And we’re not done yet. More moon flybys and the first exploration of Jupiter’s close ring and polar atmosphere are yet to come,” said Scott Bolton, Juno’s principal investigator.
The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) in a new discovery found a record-breaking and extremely brown dwarf, which posed a challenge to scientists' understanding of how stars are born.

This newly spotted brown dwarf has been hanging out in space alone and has a mass of only 3 to 4 times that of Jupiter. This is the lowest-mass object of its kind yet found by the scientists.

The discovery of the brown dwarf has left many scientists questioning how it was formed in the first place. "It's pretty easy for current models to make giant planets in a disc around a star," said astronomer Catarina Alves de Oliveira of the European Space Agency, while speaking to Science Alert.

He added, "But in this cluster, it would be unlikely that this object formed in a disc, instead forming like a star, and three Jupiter masses is 300 times smaller than our Sun. So we have to ask, how does the star formation process operate at such very, very small masses?"

Science behind 'failed stars'

Brown dwarfs are commonly referred to as "failed stars". A star is a celestial object which gets created from a dense clump in a cloud of dust and gas in space which collapses under gravity.

The star continues to grow till it is massive enough for the heat and pressure in its core to turn into hydrogen fusion. The star's minimum mass is generally 80 to 85 times the mass of Jupiter.

A brown dwarf is a similar kind of object which is formed like all other stars, but it does not have enough mass which helps in creating the conditions for hydrogen fusion. However, a brown dwarf is not even a planet.

The term 'brown' in the name refers to how they are small in size compared to the white dwarf stars but bigger compared to the non-glowing 'dark' planets.

A team of astronomers, headed by Kevin Luhman of Pennsylvania State University, has been trying to discover the smallest of these objects in space.

"One basic question you'll find in every astronomy textbook is, what are the smallest stars? That's what we're trying to answer,” said Luhman.
So we have to ask, how does the star formation process operate at such very, very small masses?" Science behind 'failed stars' Brown dwarfs are commonly referred to as "failed stars". Watch: Milky way's mysteries: The curious case of missing stars A team of astronomers, headed by Kevin Luhman of Pennsylvania State University, has been trying to discover the smallest of these objects in space. "One basic question you'll find in every astronomy textbook is, what are the smallest stars? That's what we're trying to answer,” said Luhman. The James Webb Space Telescope was used by scientists to conduct a survey of the centre of a young star cluster named IC 348, which was located in the Perseus star-forming region around 1,000 light-years away. James Webb Telescope observes jet stream as fast as 'category 5' storms on Jupiter

The researchers at European Space Agency (ESA) have found two Jupiter-sized objects in the most unlikely place in the Universe, a nebula. They use National Aeronautics and Space Administration's (NASA) James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) to spot the giants. Jupiter is the largest planet in our Solar System.

Finding giant planets in space is not that unique a thing but what's special about this discovery is that the objects have been found inside Orion Nebula. It is the closest star-forming region to us.

It was previously believed that nebulas only formed stars and were not capable of spontaneously forming planet-sized objects. So the present discovery has the potential of upending our thinking about planet formation and the nebulas.

"There's something wrong with either our understanding of planet formation, star formation — or both," said Samuel Pearson, an ESA scientist who worked on the research, in an interview with The New York Times. "They shouldn't exist," he added.

Pearson was quoted by The New York Times.

These Jupiter-sized objects have been named Jupiter Mass Binary Objects, or JuMBOs. The objects are not large enough to be stars and aren't technically planets since they don't revolve around any star.

"Most of us don't have time to get wrapped up in this debate about what is a planet and what isn't a planet," Professor Mark McCaughrean, a senior adviser for science and exploration at the ESA, told The Guardian.

McCaughrean was quoted by The Guardian.

He has co-authored a research paper which is still to be peer-reviewed. In his paper, McCaughrean says that the JuMBOs are about a million years old. When compared to the age of the Universe, these objects are young.

It has been estimated that surface temperatures of JuMBOs is around 1000 degrees Celsius. The JuMBOs differ from planet in a way that they are not able to maintain steady temperature as they don't receive energy from their host stars.

JWST spots Jupiter-like objects that can upend our understanding of nebulas

The latest observations of NASA's James Webb Space Telescope have hinted at the presence of a building block of life – carbon – inside the global ocean on Europa, one of the icy moons of Jupiter.

The James Webb Space Telescope was used by two independent teams of astronomers to observe the frozen surface of Europa. Each analysis of the detections of the space observatory revealed the presence of abundant carbon dioxide within a specific area of the frigid terrain.

The two studies described the findings which were published in the journal Science on September 21.

“On Earth, life likes chemical diversity — the more diversity, the better. We’re carbon-based life. Understanding the chemistry of Europa’s ocean will help us determine whether it’s hostile to life as we know it, or if it might be a good place for life,” stated Geronimo Villanueva, lead author of the first study and planetary scientist at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Centre in Greenbelt, Maryland, in a statement.

Europa has a thick ice shell beneath which a subsurface global ocean exists, which may contain twice the amount of water present on the oceans of the planet.

However environments, which are suitable for the existence of life, require more than water: an energy source and a supply of organic molecules, according to NASA.

After Webb's data revealed that carbon is present on Europa’s surface, an analysis was conducted by the researchers to understand if it was delivered by meteorites, or if it originated from the internal ocean.

In the observations, carbon dioxide was seen concentrated in a region of “chaos terrain” on Europa known as Tara Regio. The geologically young area is filled with ice which has been resurfaced and disrupted, which further suggests that the material was exchanged between the surface and the ocean.

“We now think that we have observational evidence that the carbon we see on Europa’s surface came from the ocean. That’s not a trivial thing. Carbon is a biologically essential element,” stated Samantha Trumbo, lead author of the second study and a 51 Pegasi B Fellow at Cornell University, in a statement.

The Hubble Space Telescope had earlier spotted ocean-derived salt in the same region. “We think this implies that the carbon probably has its ultimate origin in the internal ocean,” said Trumbo.

Life on Jupiter's moon? NASA's James Webb spots a building blocks on Europa

As humanity explores the possibility of life beyond Earth, there's the intriguing prospect that life might exist within our own solar system. Among the celestial bodies within our solar system, Jupiter's moon Europa stands out as one of the few that could potentially provide the right conditions for life. Watch this story to know how the existence of essential life-supporting chemicals in this ocean, notably carbon has opened new possibilities

Potentially bolstering chances of humans discovering suitable life conditions in our solar system, scientists have revealed that carbon dioxide detected on Jupiter's moon Europa might be coming from the vast ocean present beneath its icy shell.

Using the James Webb Space Telescope, an upgrade on the Hubble, scientists are now assured that there is a huge ocean of saltwater, kilometres below Europa's ice-covered surface, making the moon a prime candidate for hosting extra-terrestrial life in our solar system.

Two separate teams of scientists arrived at the same conclusion using the telescope's Near-Infrared Camera (NIRCam). The results of the study published in Science revealed the exact spot where the most concentrated amount of life-building CO2 was found.

Although it is not understood what the chaos terrain means, one theory floating around suggests that warm water from the ocean rises up to melt the surface ice which then re-freezes over time to form uneven cracks.

An amateur astronomer in Japan captured a bright flash in Jupiter’s atmosphere, leading to further investigation by scientists. According to a report by The New York Times (NYT) on Friday (September 15), the astronomer, who remains unidentified, sent an email to Dr Ko Arimatsu, an astronomer at Kyoto University. Upon receiving the email, Dr Arimatsu put a call out for more information.

Arimatsu received six more reports of the August 28 flash which is one of the brightest ever recorded on Jupiter. Flashes like these are caused by asteroids or comets from the edges of the solar system which impact Jupiter's atmosphere

As per the NYT report, powerful impacts into Jupiter are a lot more rare currently, but they do occur. In 1994, a comet whacked the planet with so much force that it left a visible debris field. Another impact was seen in 2009.

Dr Arimatsu said that eight of the nine flashes seen in Jupiter since 2010 were reported by amateur astronomers. He emphasised the importance of small-scale astronomy initiatives.

Amateur Japanese astronomer captures bright flash in Jupiter's atmosphere

Jupiter isn't just another gas blob floating in space in our Solar System. It is the biggest planet that revolves around the sun. It is also the only planet in the Solar System which came close to being a star. Thankfully for us, it didn't.

But this is not the only good thing about Jupiter. The gas giant, along with Saturn, is believed by scientists to be actively protecting the inner planets in the Solar System.

More on this in a short while.

A celestial body has collided with Jupiter. It was a small celestial body compared to the gigantic size of Jupiter but it is likely to be proportionally bigger when compared with Earth.

Space.com has reported that the collision took place at 1:45 am Japan Standard Time on Aug. 29.

An account associated with the Organised Autotelescopes for Serendipitous Event Survey (OASES) project and the Planetary Observation Camera for Optical Transient Surveys (PONCOTS) system posted about the collision on X (formerly Twitter).

The collision caused a tiny flash in Jupiter's atmosphere.

An account named 'MASA Planetary Log' later posted footage on X that showed a brief burst of light associated with the collision.

Another independent observation was made by am amateur astronomer in the Chinese city of Zhengzhou in Henan province.

The huge gravity of Jupiter attracts asteroids and comets that are hurtling towards the inner Solar System, perhaps on a collision course with some planet (even Earth!). These space rocks may be huge by our perception but when compared to Jupiter, they are pretty tiny. So the gas giant gobbles them up like its nobody's business and continues on its path around the Sun as if nothing major has happened, and plays our protector in a way.

きのうのTLで知った木星の閃光、撮影したデータを確認してみたら写っていました。 …声が出ました(^^; 日本時間2023年8月29日1:45、世界時28日16:45です。https://t.co/UYhnvAmA63https://t.co/Y7nCHtJq4k pic.twitter.com/g0FerdyoVg — MASA Planetary Log (@MASA_06R) August 29, 2023 × The OASES account on X posted a high-res image of Jupiter at the time of the collision. pic.twitter.com/yHIp6VMUas — 京都大学OASES/PONCOTSプロジェクト (@OASES_miyako) August 31, 2023 × This brings us back to the discussion on how Jupiter protects the inner solar system and may even be responsible for flourishing life on Earth. A cosmic body bigger than the Earth just collided with Jupiter. Here's what happened

SpaceX, led by Elon Musk, announced Wednesday (July 26, local time) that they are delaying the launch of the world's largest private satellite, named JUPITER-3, "due to a violation of abort criteria." Now, another launch attempt would be made on Thursday (July 27).

In a tweet, SpaceX wrote, "Standing down from tonight’s Falcon Heavy launch of the @HughesConnects JUPITER 3 mission due to a violation of abort criteria. Teams are resetting for a launch attempt tomorrow, July 27; vehicle and payload are in good health."

This remarkable satellite will be lifted into space by SpaceX's Falcon Heavy rocket from Launch Complex 39A in Florida, marking the seventh launch for the powerful triple-booster rocket.

Impressive satellite details

Developed by Maxar Technologies in California, JUPITER-3 is not only impressive in size but also in its advanced technological features and capabilities, reported India Today.

Once fully deployed, the satellite's dimensions will rival the wingspan of a commercial airliner, measuring between 130-160 feet (40-50 metres). Its innovative architecture has allowed for electronics miniaturisation, including solid-state amplifiers and enhanced antenna efficiency.

Enhanced communication capabilities

JUPITER-3 is expected to double the capacity of Maxar's satellite fleet, providing an additional 500 Gbps of connectivity. This boost will enable the company to serve more customers, especially in areas where traditional cable and fibre connectivity are limited or unreliable. The satellite's capabilities encompass in-flight Wi-Fi, maritime connections, enterprise networks, backhaul for Mobile Network Operators (MNOs), and Community Wi-Fi solutions throughout North and South America.

A rare “sibling” which is likely to share a similar orbit with a Jupiter-like planet around a young star has been found by astronomers.

Atacama Large Millimetre/submillimetre Array of telescopes (ALMA) has been used by researchers in Chile to observe the PDS 70 system which is located at a distance of 370 light-years from the Centaurus constellation.

Astronomers are already aware of two Jupiter-like planets, which are called PDS 70c and PDS 70b, orbiting the star. However, they have spied a cloud of debris in the orbital path of PDS 70b which can represent a new planet's building blocks which is actively forming or already formed.

The scientists feel that the planet's direct image may be the strongest evidence to date which shows that the two exoplanets can possibly share the exact same orbit. A study, in which the findings were mentioned in detail, was published in the journal Astronomy & Astrophysics on Wednesday (July 19).

The UAE Space Agency on Sunday expanded upon its mission to explore an asteroid belt situated between Mars and Jupiter. Buoyed by the success of the Hope Mars orbiter, the agency said the mission will be named Emirates Mission to the Asteroid Belt (EMA) and launched on a spacecraft named MBR Explorer.

The ambitious mission was first announced in October 2021 and according to the latest update, it is scheduled for launch in 2028. The mission will attempt to visit seven different asteroids and even land on one of them called (269) Justitia.

"EMA takes a pioneering leap as the first mission to embark on the most extensive tour of the main asteroid belt nestled between Mars and Jupiter, culminating in a historic landing on (269) Justitia the mysterious spectrally red asteroid," read a statement by the space agency.

Speaking after unveiling the name, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the vice president and prime minister of the UAE and the ruler of Dubai, said his country will continue to expand its horizons in space.

"We will never cease to look ahead; we will never cease our efforts to develop a brighter future for our young generations," said Al Maktoum whose name inspired the explorer's nomenclature.

Apart from UAE Space Agency, the mission will have participating entities from YahSat, UAE University, TII, Khalifa University and NYUAD.

Visting different asteroids

After the launch in 2028, the MRB Explorer will visit its first asteroid in 2030 and then pass by six asteroids viz. (10254) Westerwald, (623) Chimaera, (13294) Rockox; (88055) 2000 VA28, (23871) 1998 RC76 and (59980) 1999 SG6. The purpose of visiting the asteroids is that all of them represent "different classes of asteroid with varied compositional types,"

Notably, the MRB Explorer will have four scientific instruments to probe the geology, composition and structure of the asteroids: a high-resolution camera, a thermal infrared camera, a mid-wavelength spectrometer and an infrared spectrometer.

After the flybys, the mission will undertake its most challenging part and that is landing upon Justitia, also known as the red asteroid in 2034. Apart from Justitia and Chimaera which are 50 kilometres in diameter, the rest of the asteroids are relatively small with less than 10 km across.

A school of astrophysicists believe that life came into existence via a rogue asteroid that crashed on Earth billions of years ago. Some believe that Justitia may have the building blocks required to sustain life and thus, a decade from now, UAE will be landing on the asteroid to put the theory to the test.

Despite being founded nearly a decade only, the UAE Space Agency has made tremendous strides. In 2020, the Hope Mars orbiter became the first Arab spacecraft to reach the Red Planet, making it the first agency to achieve success in the first attempt.

(10254) Westerwald, (623) Chimaera, (13294) Rockox; (88055) 2000 VA28, (23871) 1998 RC76 and (59980) 1999 SG6. The purpose of visiting the asteroids is that all of them represent "different classes of asteroid with varied compositional types," Notably, the MRB Explorer will have four scientific instruments to probe the geology, composition and structure of the asteroids: a high-resolution camera, a thermal infrared camera, a mid-wavelength spectrometer and an infrared spectrometer. WATCH | The India Story | How the UAE and India built up their special relationship × After the flybys, the mission will undertake its most challenging part and that is landing upon Justitia, also known as the red asteroid in 2034.
