Military spokesperson Amadou Abdramane reportedly said, “At around three in the morning, the ousted president Mohamed Bazoum and his family, his two cooks and two security elements, tried to escape from his place of detention.”

As per Niger’s military government, Bazoum allegedly plotted to flee to neighbouring Nigeria in a late-night escape attempt. He is being held in custody for nearly three months following his ouster in a coup.

Niger military says late night escape bid of President Bazoum thwarted

On Friday, hundreds of people demonstrated in the capital city of Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso, in favor of the ruling junta, which had taken over in a coup a year earlier. At the Place de la Nation, supporters congregated and waved Burkinabe flags. A few people carried placards featuring images of Captain Ibrahim Traore, the nation's youthful military commander.

'Elections 'not a priority' compared to security', says Junta leader

Burkina Faso's military junta leader Captain Ibrahim Traore said on Friday (Sep 29) that the promised elections will only be held in the country once the security situation permits.

Burkina Faso's military junta leader Captain Ibrahim Traore said on Friday (Sep 29) that the promised elections will only be held in the country once the security situation permits. In an interview, Captain Traore was asked, "Are you saying that as long as there is no security, there will be no elections?" Replying to this question, he said, "No, there won't be an election concentrated solely in Ouagadougou, Bougouriba and a few surrounding towns. All Burkinabes must choose their president. Those who are going to apply must be able to go anywhere in Burkina, for the people of Burkina. That's it, go and campaign and all that." He highlighted that the junta has to ensure security first, adding that the junta took over the country for security so that citizens could live with dignity and peace of mind. "And once (security) that's assured, people will be able to move around freely, go where they want, do their campaigning. And then, allow all the people of Burkina Faso to choose their president. That's what we want,” Traore added. Junta supporters mark first anniversary of coup Ibrahim Traore's remarks came as hundreds of supporters of the military junta marked the first anniversary of the coup on Friday. Traore took power on Sept. 30 last year, ousting the leader of another coup who had seized power eight months earlier. According to a report by the news agency Reuters, supporters gathered at the Place de la Nation waving Burkinabe flags. Some held signs with pictures of Traore. The rebellions were welcomed by many citizens fed up with worsening insecurity and disillusioned by their government. A few days back, the military junta said it had thwarted a coup attempt against it, and that investigations were underway to determine who was behind the plot. Election will be held in Burkina Faso only when...: Junta leader

The Burkina Faso junta said on Thursday (Sep 28) that it detained four officers a day after it announced that it thwarted a coup attempt. Citing an official statement, the news agency AFP reported that these officers were suspected of involvement in a "conspiracy against state security." Two other officers were on the run, the statement added. The identities of the four officers were not revealed. However, security sources told AFP that at least two commanders of special units were among the arrested. Junta to gather all info on coup plot The coup attempt was foiled on Wednesday and the junta said it would seek to shed "all possible light on this plot". This development comes nearly a year to the day since junta leader Captain Ibrahim Traore seized power in the West African nation on September 30, 2022. Traore's takeover was Burkina Faso's second coup in eight months. On Tuesday night, thousands of people took to the streets of the capital Ouagadougou following a call from Traore supporters to "defend" him amid rumours of a coup on social media. The streets were calm on Thursday with no special security arrangements visible. Sharing a post on X on Wednesday, the junta leader stressed his "determination to lead the transition safely despite the adversity and different manoeuvres to stop our inexorable march towards assumed sovereignty". Earlier in September, the military prosecutors said three soldiers had been arrested and charged with plotting against the junta. It is expected that "elections will be held in early 2025," a member of a party supported by the junta said without going into further detail. The junta-stacked electoral commission announced on Tuesday that 36 political parties had been given permission to participate in any future elections, but it did not specify a timetable for when they will be held.

In the last few weeks, Niger's ruling Junta has ordered police to expel France's Ambassador a move that will strain an already frosty relationship with the nation's former colonial ruler. Leaders along with the junta in neighbouring countries Mali and Burkina Faso are distancing themselves from France kickstarting a wave of anti-French sentiment.

The military in Niger deposed the nation's democratically elected president, Mohamed Bazoum, exactly one month ago. Following Mali, Guinea, and Burkina Faso, Niger had its fourth military coup in West Africa since 2020 on Wednesday, July 26.

The decision to expel the ambassador was made in response to acts taken by the French government that were "contrary to the interests of Niger," according to a statement from the foreign ministry established by the junta. It claimed that among them was the envoy's denial of a request to speak with Niger's new foreign minister.

On the other hand, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken that Washington was still focused on diplomacy as the tool to solve the ongoing crisis in Niger. "We remain very focused on diplomacy for achieving the results that we want, which is the return to the constitutional order," Blinken told reporters on Tuesday. Since the July 26 coup, Western powers and democratic African governments have called for the coup leaders to reinstate ousted President Mohamed Bazoum, who has been in detention. However, the military leaders have refused and rejected attempts at negotiation. On Thursday and Friday, West African army chiefs will meet in Ghana to prepare for possible military intervention, according to a report by the news agency Reuters. Junta threatens to prosecute ousted president The military junta has threatened to prosecute ousted president Bazoum for high treason over his exchanges with foreign heads of state and international organisations. On Sunday, junta spokesperson Amadou Abdramane said that the military authorities "gathered the necessary evidence to prosecute the ousted president ... for high treason and undermining the internal and external security of Niger". The decision was condemned by the US, the United Nations (UN) and West African leaders who called it a further sign that the junta is unwilling to seek a peaceful route out of the crisis. Morning brief: Niger Junta open to talks, Modi pays tribute to ex-PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee on death anniversary

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) on Monday (August 15th) expressed strong disapproval of the Nigerien military junta's threat to prosecute former President Mohammed Bazoum for treason and other allied crimes.

Words vs actions

In a statement released on Monday, ECOWAS said that the group's latest statement contradicts the junta's supposed commitment to restoring constitutional order in the impoverished West African nation.

ECOWAS said that "It (the planned prosecution) represents yet another form of provocation and contradicts the reported willingness of the military authorities in the Republic of Niger to restore constitutional order through peaceful means."

Previously, ECOWAS slapped sanctions on Niger and even approved the deployment of a "standby" military force, that as per the report seeks to reverse the July 26 coup.

United States outraged

In a statement released on Monday, the United States also voiced its outrage over the Niger military rulers' threats.

"We are incredibly dismayed by reports that President Bazoum's unjust detention has gone even a step further," said State Department spokesperson Vedant Patel addressing the press.

"This action is completely unwarranted and unjustified and, candidly, it will not contribute to a peaceful resolution of this crisis," he added.

Prosecution for treason

The group of soldiers who took control of Niger on July 26th claimed on Sunday night that they had collected evidence that it would use "to prosecute the deposed president and his local and foreign accomplices before the competent national and international bodies for high treason and undermining the internal and external security of Niger."

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) on Monday (August 15th) expressed strong disapproval of the Nigerien military junta's threat to prosecute former President Mohammed Bazoum for treason and other allied crimes. Words vs actions In a statement released on Monday, ECOWAS said that the group's latest statement contradicts the junta's supposed commitment to restoring constitutional order in the impoverished West African nation. ECOWAS said that "It (the planned prosecution) represents yet another form of provocation and contradicts the reported willingness of the military authorities in the Republic of Niger to restore constitutional order through peaceful means." Also read | Niger coup leaders promise to prosecute deposed president Bazoum for 'high treason' Previously, ECOWAS slapped sanctions on Niger and even approved the deployment of a "standby" military force, that as per the report seeks to reverse the July 26 coup. United States outraged In a statement released on Monday, the United States also voiced its outrage over the Niger military rulers' threats. Prosecution for treason The group of soldiers who took control of Niger on July 26th claimed on Sunday night that they had collected evidence that it would use "to prosecute the deposed president and his local and foreign accomplices before the competent national and international bodies for high treason and undermining the internal and external security of Niger." ECOWAS strongly condemns Junta's threats to prosecute former Niger president

The airspace of Niger was closed because of the "threat of intervention" as the deadline given by the West African bloc ECOWAS for reinstating democratically elected President Mohamed Bazoum was defied by the junta, increasing chances of it facing possible military action.

The ultimatum was issued by ECOWAS a week ago, asking the generals to relinquish power by midnight Sunday (August 6) 2300 GMT.

On July 26, Bazoum was overthrown after being detained by the members of his own guard at the presidency.

"Faced with the threat of intervention, which is becoming clearer through the preparation of neighbouring countries, Niger's airspace is closed from this day on Sunday... for all aircraft until further notice," said the junta, in a statement which was released shortly before the deadline was crossed.

“Any attempt to violate the country's airspace would meet with an energetic and immediate response", the statement further read.

The now-ruling National Council for the Safeguard of the Homeland (CNSP), in a separate statement, said that there was "pre-deployment in preparation for intervention" which was made by two Central African nations, without naming them. "Any state involved will be considered co-belligerent," it stated.

30,000 Niger coup supporters gather in stadium

Earlier on Sunday (August 6), nearly 30,000 supporters of the coup gathered at Seyni Kountche stadium in the capital Niamey, for cheering on the CNSP. At the stadium, which was named after the first coup d'etat leader of Niger in 1974, CNSP leaders which included General Mohamed Toumba greeted a jubilant crowd.

Russian flags were used to drape the venue and portraits of CNSP leaders were carried by the supporters.

CNSP leader General Mohamed Toumba said, "He (General Abdourahamane Tiani) has asked us to tell you that your commitment and determination will not be betrayed."

"Today's gathering is testimony to your commitment and determination to change Niger. We invite you to stay mobilised," he further stated.

Military plan

ECOWAS military chiefs of staff on Friday (August 4) agreed on a plan for possible intervention to respond to the crisis.

Niger shuts down airspace as 'threat of intervention' looms after junta defies deadline

Malians voted in a referendum on a new constitution that expands the president's role and military. The West African nation is ruled by military officers, who seized power in a 2020 coup, followed by another coup nine months later that removed the interim civilian government at the time. Back then, the prime minister and the president were to steer the country towards new elections.

Myanmar actress and singer Lily Naing Kyaw died in a hospital a week after being allegedly shot by gunmen in the head for supporting the military junta. The 58-year-old was seen as close to military leaders who seized power in a coup in 2021. Kyaw was also accused of being their informant, as per BBC reports.

The two alleged attackers accused of killing her have been arrested by the police.

They are said to be from an urban guerrilla group that opposes the military. Within hours of their arrest, two relatives of one of the alleged assailants were killed in apparent retribution, reported BBC.

The incident of Kyaw's killing is the latest in a series of assassinations of high-profile government supporters in the country.

Tint Lwin, a well-known nationalist and pro-military champion, was fatally shot in the head in Yangon. This was just four days before Kyaw was attacked.

Kyaw was targeted by the attackers on May 30 in the evening. The reports of her being shot came up after an image of her face lying down in her car went viral on social media.

She was taken to hospital in critical condition and remained in a coma until she died early on June 6.

A statement issued by the government called the attack an "inhumane shooting of an innocent woman".

Seventeen pro-junta organisations released statements denouncing the killing. Ma Ba Tha, a hard-line nationalist Buddhist organisation, demanded better security.

Two men accused of the shooting, who were said to be the members of Special Task Force, were arrested.

One of them, named Kaung Zar Ni Hein, was identified from CCTV footage. The other attacker has been named Kyaw Thura. Both of them are in custody awaiting trial.

The military has claimed that prominent student leader D Nyein Lynn was behind the shooting.

On the night the two attackers were arrested, the mother and cousin of Kaung Zar Ni Hein, were fatally shot at their home in Yangon. His younger brother and younger sister managed to escape - the security forces are "protecting them from gunmen", BBC quoted a pro-military channel as saying.

However, there is no independent confirmation of the report and no group has yet claimed responsibility for the attack.

Myanmar pro-junta actress-singer Lily Naing Kyaw dies after being shot in the head

More than 100 people were killed in a military airstrike by Myanmar's Junta on the 11th of April. This is the deadliest attack on civilians by Myanmar's armed forces. Since the military Junta overthrew the democratically elected government in February 2021. Human rights activists see these systematic attacks as part of a pattern to silence the opposition. Schools, health clinics, even entire villages have been bombed to smithereens to quell the resistance. With strict media censorship, it is difficult to ascertain the scale of violence that is unfolding in the country.

Min Aung Hlaing remarks came as he addressed 8,000 service members Monday who attended the annual Armed Forces Day parade in Myanmar's capital Naypyidaw.

Myanmar's junta chief pledges to root out shadow govt before elections

US will soon impose more sanctions on Myanmar to thwart all efforts by the junta in the Southeast Asian nation to generate revenue and procure arms. A senior State Department official said Wednesday that further sanctions will be announced in coming days, reported Reuters.

US to impose more sanctions on Myanmar, says Russia must stop arms supply to junta

A bomb blast at a railway station in southern Myanmar claimed lives of three and injured nine others, the junta and local media reported. Local media and witnesses confirmed the number of fatalities reported, AFP reported.

The junta’s team in a statement said that the instance took place at Nyaunglabin township in the Bago region around 150 kilometres north of commercial hub Yangon at around 12:20 pm local time (05:50 GMT).

It also released pictures of the site, that showed roof tiles littering a platform.

The junta blamed the anti-coup group “People’s Defence Forces” (PDFs) for the attack but did not offer any pieces of evidence to support the blame.

The junta and the PDF have traded blame over several deadly blasts in the past few months.

Following the attack, junta chief Min Aung Hlaing acknowledged that over a third of the country's townships were not under the control of the full military.

The group claimed responsibility for the explosion of a bridge in Nyaunglabin on February 09 but did not issue a statement.

Similar instances have occurred in Myanmar. There are almost daily killings of low-level officials or anti-group fighters, with the details murky.

In December last year, a dozen of people were injured in a blast on a ferry in Yangon.

Similarly, in October 2022, at least two bombs exploded outside a prison in Yangon, which claimed the lives of eight and injured 18.

The country has been in turmoil since the military seized power two years ago, with anti-coup groups clashing with troops across the country.
