Myanmar's Junta has extended the country's state of emergency by another six months. This could likely delay elections that the military had pledged to hold in August this year.

Myanmar: State of Emergency extended as protesters mark coup anniversary

Myanmar's military toppled the democratically-elected government of the country and grabbed power on 1 February 2021. As the country marks the second anniversary of this military coup, the United States and its allies took the opportunity to tighten its noose around the military regime while imposing sanctions on the country.

This development also comes at a time when Myanmar's junta on Friday announced tough criteria to contest an election this year in a bid to tighten its grip on the political landscape in the country.

In 2022, 165 children died at the hands of Myanmar's military Junta. As per data shared by the nation's exiled opposition National Unity Government (NUG), this year saw a 78 per cent uptick in the number of deaths of children from 2021.

The United Nations Security Council urged Myanmar's military junta to release Aung San Suu Kyi, who has been in prison for the past two years when the army staged a coup and ousted her civilian government.

On Wednesday, the UN body adopted its first-ever resolution on the situation in the Southeast Asian nation, calling for “immediate release all arbitrarily detained prisoners," including 77-year-old Suu Kyi and ex-president Win Myint.

The resolution is historic considering that the 15-member council has been split on Myanmar for decades. Earlier, the body used to issue only formal statements on the state of the country, staying away from meddling in its internal affairs.

The last council resolution regarding Myanmar was the one the UN passed in 1948, approving the country's membership to the world body, reports AFP news agency quoting diplomats.

The resolution has also sought "an immediate end to all forms of violence", asking for "all parties to respect human rights, fundamental freedoms and the rule of law."

The resolution was adopted after attaining 12 votes, with permanent members China and Russia abstaining. They also did not opt to veto the text. Notably, India also abstained.

"Any opportunity for the Security Council to speak with one strong, united voice on any issue and especially on Myanmar would be much welcomed," Secretary-General Antonio Guterres's spokesman said ahead of the vote.

The UK had drafted the text of Wednesday's resolution in September, following which several amendments were made to ensure its passing, UN watchers told AFP.

Text relating to the council's determination to use all its powers if Myanmar fails to adhere to the resolution was reportedly dropped.

Apart from that, several members objected to a provision requesting the UN secretary-general to report to the council on the situation in Myanmar every 60 days.

Myanmar's junta leader has not been invited to an ASEAN regional summit happening next month, host nation Cambodia announced on Wednesday.

In what can be seen as a fresh diplomatic snub, the junta has been invited to "nominate a non-political representative for the upcoming ASEAN Summits". This means that junta chief Min Aung Hlaing won't be allowed to attend the summit.

Since the military junta seized power last year, ASEAN has led diplomatic efforts to resolve the conflict in Myanmar. However, as per AFP, there has been little progress on the "five-point consensus" agreed on with the junta.

As a result, the group, its leader and ministers have in the recent past been shut out of meetings of the 10-member regional bloc ASEAN. In February and August, junta's top diplomat was barred from attending the bloc's foreign minister gatherings in Phnom Penh, Cambodia.

The five-point consensus calls for an immediate end to the violence in Myanmar. It also urges for a dialogue between the military and the anti-coup movement.

ASEAN's latest snub comes as the United States attempts to pressure the junta through United Nations after an air strike in September killed 11 schoolchildren.

Previously, the August meeting of ASEAN foreign ministers had ended with a rare condemnation of the junta's actions. The ministers had remarked that they were "deeply disappointed by the limited progress in and lack of commitment of the Naypyidaw authorities to the timely and complete implementation of the five-point consensus".

Myanmar junta's leader won't be allowed to attend upcoming ASEAN summit: Cambodia

As the economic misery in Myanmar continues, more and more commodities are becoming scarce.

Following a military coup last year, the economy of the nation plummeted, and the junta's attempts to grab foreign exchange as well as inconsistent business and import regulations have only made matters worse, reports AFP.

Things have been made worse as a result of the rise in global commodity prices brought on by Russia's invasion of Ukraine, leaving many people struggling to make ends meet and turning to subsidies or charity to put food on the table.

According to the World Bank, approximately 40 per cent of the population was living below the national poverty level in July. Inflation measured by the consumer price index reached 17.3 per cent in March.

Khin Khin Than, a 55-year-old housewife, told AFP that "people can't spend much of their income on food because of higher commodity prices" as she waited in line to fill her plastic bottle with one of the many commodities in short supply: oil while being drenched in the monsoon rain. According to her, the market price for around 1.6 kg of oil has soared from 5,000 kyats to 9,000 kyats ($4.25).

Two Myanmar models face up to 15 years in jail for posting 'obscene' videos

The Myanmar Junta is continuing its harsh measures in the country as two prominent models get arrested for harming culture and dignity. These charges have been put for posting clips on online platforms without modesty.

As tensions in Myanmar over the Junta rule continues, the head of the country's Junta has now extended the state of emergency cited continued terrorism activity in the country as the main reason for the extension.

Myanmar Junta extends emergency, cites terrorism activity as main reason

The military Junta in Myanmar was first jailing its critics now it is executing them. Last Saturday, at least four political prisoners were hanged to death in Myanmar, the executions have triggered criticism from ASEAN countries to America to United Nations, they're all condemning the junta's actions asking the world to boycott them completely.

Military Junta's executions met with condemnation from ASEAN, US and UN

The international outrage of Myanmar's first execution in decades prompted the junta to lash out on Tuesday, claiming the four killed prisoners—two of whom were well-known democratic activists—"deserved many death sentences." The killings that were revealed on Monday provoked outrage from all over the world, increased concerns that there will be more, and triggered demands for tougher international sanctions against the already isolated junta.

However, the military leadership resisted, arguing that the soldiers "were given the right to defend themselves according to court procedure" in a statement by spokesman Zaw Min Tun. At a routine press conference in the capital, Naypyidaw, he stated: "If we compare their sentence with other death penalty cases, they have committed crimes for which they should have been given death sentences many times. They harmed many innocent people. There were many big losses which could not be replaced."

He claimed without going into further detail that the captives, who included a former lawmaker from the party of deposed civilian leader Aung San Suu Kyi, had been permitted to communicate with family members through video conference. The UN and western nations have already criticised the junta for the executions.

An ex-lawmaker from Suu Kyi's National League for Democracy (NLD), Phyo Zeya Thaw, was given a death sentence in January for violating anti-terrorism regulations. The military tribunal imposed the same punishment on democracy campaigner Kyaw Min Yu, also known as "Jimmy." The two other guys were given the death penalty for the murder of a woman in Yangon who they claimed was an informant for the junta. As part of its crackdown on dissent after seizing power last year, the junta has convicted scores of anti-coup activists to death, although Myanmar had not carried out an execution in decades.

Myanmar: Junta spokesperson says executed inmates deserved 'many death sentences'

Myanmar’s junta has followed through on its plan to execute four political prisoners, including a former lawmaker from the ousted civilian government, which it accused of carrying out “brutal and terror acts.”

Myanmar junta executes four political prisoners, it's first capital punishment in decades

Nearly a year and a half after the the country's democratically elected government was toppled in a coup and the Junta installed at the helm, the new leaders have turned to an old and, some might argue, barbarous, method of punishment. According to state media, Myanmar’s Junta recently executed four prisoners, in the country’s first use of capital punishment in decades.

AFP reports that a former lawmaker for the unseated Aung San Suu Kyi’s National League for Democracy (NLD) party was among those executed. As per a June press release by the United Nations Human Rights Office of the High Commissioner (OHCHR), they are the first judicial executions in Myanmar since 1988.

As part of its campaign against dissent after seizing power last year, the junta has sentenced dozens of anti-coup activists, although the country had not carried out an execution in decades.

Myanmar junta executes leading democracy campaigner & 3 others in country’s 1st executions since 1988

Myanmar's ruling junta has condemned what it called "reckless and interfering" foreign statements about a rare execution order against two prominent opposition figures, accusing them of aiding terrorism by demanding their release.

The United Nations, the U.S. State Department and France last week denounced the rejection of the appeals of a veteran activist and a former lawmaker, a decision that paves the way for the country's first executions in decades.

A state newspaper on Tuesday carried a foreign ministry statement rejecting the international criticism, expressing "utmost indignation and strong protest" at France in particular for calling the Myanmar junta an illegitimate military regime, and accused it of meddling in its affairs.

"The ministry protests and objects in the strongest terms to the irresponsible and reckless statements and remarks," it said, adding the United States, France and UN remarks were "abetting terrorism" and neglecting what it called violent attacks against authorities.
